Growing with Purpose The Future of Sioux Falls

If you want to understand Sioux Falls, don’t start with a spreadsheet or a population chart. Start with a walk.

Head to Falls Park on a summer evening and you’ll hear kids laughing near the waterfalls, couples snapping photos, and the steady hum of a city that knows exactly who it is. That sound is momentum mixed with pride.

Today, nearly 225,000 people call Sioux Falls home, making us the largest city in South Dakota. Our population has grown by more than 50 percent since 2000, and that kind of historic growth doesn’t happen by accident. It happens because people see opportunities here. It happens because businesses believe in our future. And it happens because our community has been intentional about building a place where people want to live, work, and invest.

Around City Hall, we often use a phrase: we want to keep Sioux Falls investible. That means continuing to make the smart, necessary investments that support long-term growth and quality of life. It means prioritizing public safety. It means strengthening the fundamentals like water,

wastewater, and streets. These aren’t always glamorous projects, but they are the backbone of a city that plans not just for today, but for the next generation.

The results speak for themselves. In 2025, Sioux Falls surpassed $1 billion in building permit valuations for the fifth consecutive year. Since 2021, more than $5.1 billion in commercial and residential investment has been poured into our community. Those milestones reflect something special about Sioux Falls: when growth is managed well, people want to be part of it. That creates a positive ripple effect across our economy, our neighborhoods, and our quality of life.

But Sioux Falls isn’t just a great place to invest. It’s a great place to experience.

Whether you just moved here, you’re planning a weekend getaway, or you’re simply looking for something new to explore, our community offers something for every age and every season. You can hop on our 36-

mile recreation trail that wraps around the city, spend an afternoon at one of our more than 80 parks, or enjoy the simple pleasure of a Saturday morning wandering through local shops, bakeries, and restaurants led by award-winning chefs alongside long-time family favorites.

The Sites and Sounds of Downtown

Nestled along the gentle curves of the Big Sioux River, Sioux Falls feels less like a stopover and more like a living gallery - where art, community, and open skies come together. What was once simply the state’s largest city is now emerging as a creative destination, anchored by three must-see experiences: the Arc of Dreams, Washington Pavilion, and Levitt at the Falls.

Follow the river to the striking Arc of Dreams. Spanning the water in polished steel, this monumental piece by Dale Claude Lamphere stretches nearly a football field in length. At its center, a dramatic gap symbolizes the leap every dreamer must take. Visit at dusk, when the Arc glows above the river - it’s one of the city’s most iconic views.

The Washington Pavilion is a premier cultural destination in downtown Sioux Falls where art, science, and live entertainment come together in one historic setting. Visitors can explore hands-on exhibits in the Kirby Science Discovery Center, view inspiring collections in the Visual Arts Center, and enjoy Broadway shows, concerts, and performances throughout the year. Housed in a beautifully restored former high school, the Pavilion offers engaging experiences for all ages, making it one of the city’s top attractions.

As the sun sets, make your way to Levitt at the Falls in Falls Park West. Throughout summer, this open-air venue hosts free concerts several nights a week, drawing locals and visitors alike. Bring a blanket, settle in on the lawn, and enjoy music under the stars. With ongoing upgrades including a new hospitality center backed by philanthropist Denny Sanford - the experience continues to grow.

In Sioux Falls, art isn’t tucked away in galleries, it’s woven into the streets, the skyline, and the rhythm of daily life.

WHEN&WHERE

4TH OF JULY July 4, 10:00am2026 On Phillips Avenue sfindependenceparade.com

PARADE June 13, 2026 10:00am Downtown Sioux Falls siouxfallspride.org

In Sioux Falls, parades aren’t just events - they’re invitations. Throughout the year, downtown streets become stages of color, culture, and celebration, offering a front-row seat to the city’s community spirit.

Spring kicks off with the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, when Phillips Avenue turns green with Irish pride and a cheerful, family-friendly crowd. Summer follows with the Independence Day Parade, a classic July 4th tradition of marching bands, local groups, and red-white-and-blue energy.

In fall, the Native American Day Parade brings meaningful depth, celebrating culture through traditional regalia, music, and storytelling while fostering connection and understanding.

June adds vibrant energy with the Sioux Falls Pride Parade. Organized in part by The Center for Equality, it fills downtown with color, music, and a welcoming spirit that highlights the city’s growing diversity.

As winter arrives, the Parade of Lights brightens downtown with glowing floats and festive cheer, marking the start of the holiday season.

What ties it all together is the setting - walkable downtown streets, local shops, and a crowd that feels close-knit and electric. No matter the season, Sioux Falls brings people together, one parade at a time.

Art Around every corner Sculpture Walk

There’s a certain rhythm to downtown Sioux Falls in the warmer months, and if you follow it long enough, it will lead you straight into the open-air gallery known as the SculptureWalk Sioux Falls.

Start your walk where the coffee is strong and the sidewalks are still quiet. Early light slips between brick storefronts and catches on bronze, steel, and stone, turning each sculpture into something just a little different than it was the night before. That is part of the charm here. Nothing is static, even the pieces that weigh thousands of pounds.

The route winds naturally through Phillips Avenue, though there is no need to rush. This is not a museum with walls and hours. It is a living, breathing exhibit woven into the city itself. Office workers pass by with coffee in hand while visitors stop midstep, circling each piece, trying to make sense of it.

Take a short detour east and you will hear it before you see it. The steady rush of water at Falls Park adds its own soundtrack to the experience. Sit for a moment and let the contrast between natural force and human creation settle in.

The best way to experience the Sculpture Walk is to let it unfold without a checklist. Wander. Double back. Notice what draws you in. Every year the collection changes, but the feeling stays the same. Art that meets you where you are, right there on the sidewalk, asking nothing more than a moment of your attention.

Exploring Sioux Falls by Bike Trail

The Sioux Falls bike trail system is one of the city’s greatest treasures - a paved loop of more than 30 miles that follows the Big Sioux River and threads through parks, downtown streetscapes, and stretches of open prairie. It’s a route that offers convenience and escape, giving riders, joggers, and walkers a chance to see Sioux Falls from a fresh perspective.

Most visitors begin their journey at Falls Park, where the rushing waterfalls set the tone for the ride ahead. From here, the trail curves into downtown, crossing bridges and passing murals that highlight the city’s creative spirit. Cafes and local shops are close by, making it easy to pause for coffee or a snack before heading farther down the path.

South of downtown, the trail settles into a quieter rhythm. Cottonwoods arch overhead, their branches creating shade on warm afternoons, while the river’s steady flow keeps you company. In these stretches, it’s easy to forget you’re in the heart of a growing city. Wildlife often makes an appearance - geese along the shoreline, herons standing in the shallows, and the occasional deer grazing in nearby fields.

Key stops along the way include Yankton Trail Park, a hub for weekend riders and community events, and Sertoma Park, where the trail dips into a peaceful green corridor alive with birdsong. For families or casual riders, these sections provide easy access and plenty of space to relax. Those seeking a longer ride can continue to loop the entire city, exploring neighborhoods and parkland connected seamlessly by the path.

What makes the Sioux Falls bike trails special isn’t just the mileage or the scenery - it’s the way the system blends city life with natural beauty. One moment you’re gliding past downtown architecture, the next you’re surrounded by prairie grasses swaying in the breeze. The loop can be enjoyed in its entirety in a few hours, but just as rewarding are the short segments that invite you to slow down and savor the experience.

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a long-time resident, the trails are more than a way around town - they’re a moving introduction to the spirit of Sioux Falls. Bring a bike, good walking shoes, or just your curiosity, and let the path show you where the river leads.

Sioux Falls has built a strong reputation as a bikefriendly city, and its local bike shops play a big role in keeping visitors and residents riding. Whether you’re cruising the scenic Big Sioux River Recreation Trail or heading out for a longer adventure, the city offers a mix of locally owned shops and national retailers ready to get you geared up.

For a true local experience, Sioux Falls Bicycle Company is a go-to. This full-service shop emphasizes accessibility for all riders, offering everything from sales and repairs to bike rentals, including e-bikes and mountain bikes, making it a great option for visitors looking to explore the city on two wheels.

1740 S Cliff Avenue | 605-334-7666

Another standout is Spoke-N-Sport, a longestablished shop known for its expert service and community focus. With a wide selection of road, gravel, mountain, and electric bikes, along with professional fittings and repairs, it’s a trusted stop for beginner and experienced cyclists.

3401 S Cliff Avenue | 605-275-2453

For those looking for a broader selection, Erik's Bike Board & Ski offers a large inventory of bikes, gear, and apparel, making it easy to find everything in one place.

3315 S Spring Avenue | 605-334-2668

Nearby, Scheels and Dick's Sporting Goods provide big-box convenience with extensive sporting goods departments that include bikes, accessories, and family-friendly options.

Where History Meets the Wild

Discovering the Mary Jo Wegner Arboretum

Just east of Sioux Falls, lies a 115-acre sanctuary where native prairie grasses sway beside granite quarry ruins, and the echo of a historic railroad line lingers in the trees. The Mary Jo Wegner Arboretum and East Sioux Falls Historic Site is one of the region's most compelling outdoor destinations; a place where nature lovers, history buffs, and curious wanderers alike will find something to cherish.

A visionary's dream, rooted in the land

The Arboretum's name owes its existence to Mary Jo Wegner, a local environmental visionary who saw potential where others saw overgrowth. When she first explored the land along the Big Sioux River, she encountered stone quarries, remnants of the Illinois Central Railroad, and old

building foundations, a patchwork of forgotten history waiting to be reclaimed. Wegner envisioned a space that would "nurture connections between plants and people, past and present," and her dream is now a living reality open to all.

Explore the grounds

Visitors can spend hours wandering the arboretum's diverse landscapes. Highlights include:

• Themed Gardens and Prairie Habitats. Stroll through a tapestry of themed gardens bursting with native wildflowers and ornamental plantings. The open prairie zones offer a stunning display of grasses and seasonal blooms that shift with the South Dakota seasons.

• The Historic Bur Oak. Standing as the symbolic heart

of the arboretum, this ancient Bur Oak is a living monument to the land's enduring history and a beloved stop for photographers and tree enthusiasts.

• Historic Site Features. Walk the same ground Mary Jo Wegner once explored. The Sioux Falls Granite Company quarry and the remains of the Illinois Central Railroad line offer a tangible connection to the region's industrial and settler heritage.

• Wetlands and Wildlife. The arboretum's wetland areas attract a wide variety of bird species and wildlife, making it a rewarding destination for naturalists and casual birdwatchers. Hiking trails meander throughout, offering peaceful passage through each distinct habitat.

Education and community

At the center of the grounds sits the Mabel and Judy

Jasper Educational Center, completed in 2013. This thoughtfully designed building re-creates East Sioux Falls' distinctive one-room, L-shaped schoolhouse and hosts hands-on learning programs for children. A gift from educator Judy Jasper in honor of her mother, Mabel, together they shared 90 years of teaching across South Dakota, the center embodies the arboretum's mission of connecting generations to the natural world.

Get involved

The arboretum is more than a park; it's a community endeavor. From seasonal programs and classes to volunteer opportunities and fundraising events, there are numerous ways to deepen your connection to the land and support the arboretum's ongoing mission.

For four-legged travelers, Sioux Falls offers more than sidewalks and backyards - the city’s dog parks are welcoming spaces where pups can run, socialize, and stretch their legs. Whether you’re a local with a high-energy retriever or a visitor passing through with your loyal companion, these parks showcase a playful side of the city.

Start with Spencer Dog Park, the largest and most popular off-leash area. Set against open fields, this spacious park offers room for dogs of all sizes to sprint and chase, with separate areas to keep big and small breeds comfortable. Owners will appreciate the benches, water fountains, and wide sight lines that make supervising easy.

For something quieter, Lions Centennial Park

provides a fenced dog area nestled alongside the bike trail. It’s a favorite for residents who enjoy combining a walk or jog with some off-leash playtime. The shady trees make it especially inviting on warm afternoons.

Another gem is Pasley Park, where a cozy dog run offers a friendly, neighborhood feel. It’s a great stop for travelers looking for a quick break that still gives pups space to roam.

Each of these parks reflects Sioux Falls’ community spirit: clean, well-maintained, and designed for dogs and their people. Beyond the fences, you’ll find walking paths, river views, and green space that make lingering a pleasure.

Whether your dog loves to chase, wrestle, or simply sniff new ground, Sioux Falls dog parks offer a chance to explore the city with wagging tails and muddy paws.

The Great Plains Zoo

Great Plains Zoo’s (GPZ) walkable, accessible campus is home to more than 120 animal species from six continents. Accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums, GPZ champions conservation, wildlife education, and family-friendly exploration year-round.

Zoo highlights include African hoofstock species like black rhinos, giraffes, zebras, and critically endangered bongos. Guests can participate in weekend giraffe feedings during the summer months, as well as interactive zookeeper chats.

Be sure to check out the African lion exhibit with spacious indoor and outdoor guest viewing areas. The lion building also includes an indoor/outdoor meerkat habitat. Next door, guests can enjoy lunch at the Roar Café while watching the lions and meerkats explore and play.

During the summer, young guests can cool off in the splash pad, while adults sip a fresh-squeezed lemonade or draft beer. Events like Zoofari and monthly Adult Nights give grownups the chance to enjoy the zoo in a more relaxed, after-hours setting. Each Halloween, families can participate in ZooBoo, featuring local trick-or-treat vendors, decorations, and festive activities.

GPZ fulfills its mission of connecting and inspiring conservation of wild species and spaces through a robust education program. Zoo Camp, Zoo Cubs, and Girl Scout badge programs cover a wide variety of topics from zoo veterinary care to diverse animal habitats. Each day during the summer, guests can meet ambassador animals during Creature Features and join in the conversation at zookeeper chats. Bookworms engages the youngest zoo visitors with daily story times in the summer and weekly programs during the winter months.

Many of the animals living at the zoo are endangered and are part of Species Survival Plans (SSP). SSPs help ensure the most diverse possible genetics contribute to the healthiest possible population of animals in human care. One example is the red wolf, whose wild population currently hovers around two dozen individuals. GPZ is home to a breeding pair of these rare carnivores and is working with other zoos to bolster wolf numbers in the wild.

In addition to red wolf, GPZ participates in conservation efforts in South Dakota with endangered black-footed ferrets and Dakota skipper butterflies, and globally by supporting efforts to help black rhinos in Namibia and snow leopards in Nepal. A portion of admissions and gift shop sales support conservation efforts.

Strollers, wheelchairs, and electric scooters are available for rent. The zoo campus includes a mother’s room, family restrooms, and an adult-size changing table. Service animals must be registered at zoo admissions.

Tea, South Dakota

A growing tradition and a destination that’s worth discovering

Just a quick hop south of Sioux Falls, the City of Tea, South Dakota, is one of the region's best-kept secrets and one of its fastest-growing communities. With a population pushing 7,400 and a spirit that's all prairie warmth, Tea delivers the kind of unhurried welcome you didn't know you needed. Whether you're rolling through for the afternoon or scouting a place to put down roots, Tea is the sort of town that makes you slow down, look around, and start to wonder why you haven't been here sooner.

Explore and Play

Tea's outdoor offerings punch well above its weight. The Tea City Park and trail network invite walkers, joggers, and cyclists to stretch their legs through well maintained green spaces.

For families, the Tea Aquatic Center is a summertime destination in its own right, featuring a sprawling swimming pool, waterslides, and splash areas that will keep kids occupied for hours. Come fall and spring, the community's outstanding baseball and softball complex draws players and spectators from across the region, a testament to Tea's deep love of local athletics.

Shop Local

Tea’s business scene is growing in all the right ways, blending locally owned boutiques with recognizable national retailers to create a shopping experience that feels convenient and refreshingly unique. It’s the kind of place where you can check off your list and still stumble into something unexpected, often with a friendly conversation to go along with it.

Standout shops help define that experience. Bella & Birch Boutique offers a thoughtfully curated mix of women’s clothing, accessories, and home décor, built on a passion for helping customers feel confident and stylish in pieces that fit their everyday lives. Just down the way, Makers Exchange brings together a collection of handmade goods and locally crafted items, giving visitors a chance to shop one-of-a-kind pieces while supporting regional artisans. And for those who love the charm of vintage finds and repurposed treasures, I-29 Antiques & Collectibles is filled with character, offering an ever-changing selection that makes every visit a little different from the last.

Eat and Gather

Tea may be small, but its dining scene packs in plenty of flavor. Right off the main highway, keep an eye out for the Taqueria Suyapa food truck, a local favorite serving up authentic, flavorful Mexican dishes that hit the spot every time.

For a laid-back meal, Titan’s Tavern offers a welcoming atmosphere with a menu full of classic comfort food, perfect for gathering with friends or catching the game. If you’re in the mood for something quick and satisfying, The Big Dill is known for its creative twists on casual favorites, delivering bold flavors in a fun, easy-going setting.

When you’re ready to slow things down or need a little pep in your step, Zooks Coffee Bar is the perfect stop for handcrafted coffee, fresh pastries, and a cozy space to relax or recharge.

Don't Miss: Teapot Days

Teapot Days is Tea's signature community celebration, a festive annual event that draws families together for food, fun, and hometown pride. The festivities will be held June 17-20, 2026. Be sure to check it out, there’s fun for the whole family.

BBQ AND COMMUNITY AT SQUEALER’S SMOKE SHACK

What started as a family-run food truck in 2014 has evolved into a premier destination in Tea, South Dakota. Squealer’s Smoke Shack is a multi-level space that functions as a serious BBQ joint and a local hangout, known for its commitment to traditional, slow-smoked meats. The menu focuses on quality over complexity, featuring staples like brisket, pulled pork, and St. Louis-style ribs. For those who want to sample everything, the Protein Platter is a go-to choice, while the Loaded Mac ‘N Cheese remains a consistent fan favorite. On Saturday after 4pm, the kitchen expands its offerings to include their popular prime rib.

Squealer’s Smoke Shack has been featured on The Local Best list for SIX YEARS in a row! Its well-suited for anything from a casual family dinner to weekend drinks with friends. During the warmer months, guests can enjoy the second-story rooftop patio and bar or watch the professional-grade sand volleyball courts. The summer league play brings a high-energy, community feel to the property that sets it apart from a typical restaurant.

Since all meats are smoked fresh daily, they do occasionally sell out of popular items like brisket toward the end of the night, so arriving early is always a safe bet. Whether you are there for the food, the views, or the volleyball, it remains one of the most unique and reliable spots in the region.
