Falls is a beautiful place to explore.
Experience Sioux Falls holds a fi rm belief that our city has something special to off er; that Sioux Falls’ hospitality, Midwestern charm, and general appreciation of community has the ability to inspire, motivate, and create a lasting impression on anyone who experiences it. Therefore, as an organization Experience Sioux Falls aspires to share the community of Sioux Falls with the world.
Sioux Falls is experiencing historical growth with more than 213,000 people choosing to call South Dakota’s largest city their home. Our population has grown more than 50 percent since 2000. This is leading to an incredible amount of momentum that we will try to build upon in 2025 and beyond. We use a term often that we want to “keep Sioux Falls investible,” meaning we want to continue to make the necessary investments to encourage growth in our community. This includes critical investments in public safety and infrastructure, like water, wastewater, and streets. In 2024, we surpassed $1 billion in building permit valuations for the fourth year in a row. Since 2021, $5.1 billion of commercial and residential investments have been poured into our community. The intentional collaboration in the public and private sectors has helped us mark these historic milestones. When our growth is well-managed, people want to invest in our community, which creates a positive ripple effect for all aspects of life in our city.
Get active and jump on our 36-mile recreation trail that winds throughout the city. Downtown Sioux Falls (DTSF) blends small town charm with big city excitement. Its vibrant and bustling downtown continues to serve as a must stop for South Dakota travelers and beyond.
From the natural beauty of the iconic Falls Park to the lively atmosphere of local festivals, events, restaurants and markets, Downtown Sioux Falls offers something for everyone.
Events in Downtown Sioux Falls offer travelers an unforgettable experience, blending local charm with a lively, inclusive atmosphere. From bustling art walks and farmers markets to seasonal celebrations, the city’s events showcase the best of its culture, creativity, and community spirit. With
live music, diverse food vendors, and interactive activities, these gatherings provide an authentic glimpse into the heart of Sioux Falls.
The calendar of events for Downtown Sioux Falls for 2025 is filling up with unique opportunities to see all of the incredible things Sioux Falls has to offer.
“We have roughly 15-20 events and promotions that DTSF will put on throughout 2025,” Marketing Manager for DTSF Jeb Cooper says.
January will start out with Sioux Falls Burger Battle which is an event that allows local downtown restaurants to take part in the contest. In the summer
time they will plan to put on two art and wine walks along with a few street activations as well. Seasonal favorites like Riverfest will also be back in Sioux Falls in September.
There is truly an event for everyone to love in the new year.
WHERE
DTSF has become a foodie paradise in the last few years making it easy to find something that fits the kind of cuisine visitors may be looking for.
“We have a pretty healthy restaurant scene that continues to grow every year,” Cooper says.
Cooper added that the Burger battle event started with 12 local restaurants
and this year around 40 will be participating, a testament to the growth of the restaurant scene in downtown Sioux Falls. From bars and grills, pubs, wine shops to coffee shops you can find a little bit of everything in downtown Sioux Falls.
Most think of the iconic Falls Park when they think of DTSF, but the downtown scene has so much more to offer when you plan your visit. In addition to Falls Park, you can find a number of galleries, educational opportunities, art endeavors and more.
The walkable downtown area makes it a great one stop shop for visitors traveling through the area. You can hit local attractions, wonderful food and hotels all in one compact area. Cooper adds that being just a few minutes away from the Sioux Falls Airport
allows tourists to experience the downtown fun of Sioux Falls without having to plan too extensively.
Cooper notes that the outdoor sculpture walk is a popular attraction. They get nearly 100 sculptures every year from local and regional artists that help DTSF lean into the artistic culture of the city.
The State Theater is another great spot to add to your travel itinerary if something indoors fits your plans a bit better. Built in 1926 and renovated, the theater reopened December 11, 2020 in order to preserve the culture and history of the original state theater.
Downtown Sioux Falls thrives by embracing the culture that makes it uniquely vibrant—a blend of Midwestern charm, innovation, and community connection. As the largest city in South Dakota, Sioux Falls offers the energy and amenities of a
bustling downtown while maintaining a friendly, approachable atmosphere. Its walkable streets are lined with local boutiques, art installations, and diverse eateries, fostering a sense of pride and place.
Cooper speaks to the importance of that Downtown atmosphere and why it makes it so special for the people who visit Sioux Falls.
“Obviously downtowns are important because it tends to be the most condensed population of the city and it really gives breath to more culture, artistic endeavors and community overall,” Cooper said. “Sioux Falls is the biggest city in Sioux Falls, but the downtown area is different for a lot of people. It’s still charming, everyone knows everybody and everyone is very kind and welcoming.”

Music, fun, community and food. You’ll find it all at Levitt at the Falls, an outdoor concert venue in downtown Sioux Falls between Phillips Avenue and Fifth Street. With 50 free concerts every summer and seating for up to 5,000 people, the Levitt serves as a gathering place for the city’s growing diverse community no matter your age or background.
Looking to bring people together through art, The National Levitt Foundation opened its eighth permanent location in 2019, the Levitt at the Falls. The site at Falls Park West helped to connect the business district of South Phillips Avenue to Falls Park, Sioux Falls’ number
one tourist attraction. But it took nearly a decade of planning, fundraising and construction to make this dream a reality for not only those living in Sioux Falls, but also those visiting.
The idea started in 2011 when Friends of Levitt Sioux Falls board chair Tom Dempster got a call from a friend of his, telling him Sioux Falls needed a Levitt. Several years of fundraising and city approvals had to happen before the groundbreaking in April 2018. On Friday, June 14, 2019, Levitt at the Falls held its first concert with GRAMMYnominated gospel and blues artist, Ruthie Foster. 30
free concerts made up the inaugural season from JuneAugust and brought free, live, professional music to over 58,000 community members. Today, the venue hosts 50 free concerts each summer, featuring acclaimed artists in a wide range of music genres.
The development includes a covered outdoor amphitheater, event lawn, state-of-the-art sound and lighting and a large video board. Other features include support facilities, public restrooms, connective pathways, landscaping, art, and more. And they’re not done growing. The venue will get a new look in the
coming years to include a community space for yearround programming, an expansion of the greenroom, offices for staff and storage for lighting and sound.
From the Festival of Cultures to Independence Day celebrations to weekend night concerts, the Levitt at the Falls brings everyone together for fun, music, community and dance – if the music moves you. So, bring your lawn chairs or blanks, or rent some on-site and get ready to enjoy a summer of fun at the Levitt at the Falls.

Sioux Falls is a city that seamlessly blends art, nature, and music into a unique experience for visitors. From its vibrant outdoor art scene to its stunning natural beauty, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Whether you’re strolling through the SculptureWalk, marveling at the Arc of Dreams, enjoying live performances at Levitt at the Falls, or soaking in the views at Falls Park, this city offers a perfect balance of culture and nature.
One of Sioux Falls’ most captivating attractions is its SculptureWalk, a year-round outdoor art exhibit that brings vibrant sculptures to the heart of the city. This self-guided walk stretches through the downtown area, showcasing a rotating collection of sculptures created by local, national, and international artists. Each piece is carefully selected to complement the city’s urban landscape, offering a blend of modern, abstract, and realistic art that engages visitors. It’s a wonderful way to explore Sioux Falls on foot while appreciating the creativity and talent that the city fosters. As you wander, you’ll encounter sculptures of all sizes, from whimsical to thought-provoking, making it a must-see for art enthusiasts.
No visit to Sioux Falls is complete without experiencing the Arc of Dreams, an iconic public art installation that symbolizes hope, progress, and the power of community. Stretching gracefully over the Big Sioux River, this stunning 70-foot arch is a testament to the city’s spirit and ambition. The sculpture was created by South Dakota Artist Laureate Dale Claude Lamphere and features a series of smaller sculptures suspended beneath the arch, representing the journeys of individuals and the connections that tie them together. The Arc can be viewed from several vantage points along the riverwalk, the nearby bridges, and it’s especially striking when illuminated at night. The Arc of Dreams serves as a powerful reminder of the city’s vision for a brighter future and its commitment to embracing the dreams of its residents and visitors alike.
For those seeking an unforgettable cultural experience, Levitt at the Falls offers free, live music performances that capture the essence of Sioux Falls’ community spirit. Located in the beautiful Levitt Pavilion, this outdoor venue hosts a wide variety of musical genres, from jazz and blues to rock and country, all performed by local, national, and international artists. The intimate setting, with its open-air seating and picturesque backdrop of Falls Park, creates an inviting atmosphere for people of all ages. With over 50 concerts each season, Levitt at the Falls is a perfect spot for an evening out, allowing visitors to enjoy quality live music under the stars while soaking in the city’s vibrant arts scene.
At the heart of Sioux Falls lies Falls Park, the crown jewel of the city’s natural attractions. This 123-acre park is home to the breathtaking Big Sioux River Falls, a series of cascading waterfalls that give the city its name. Visitors can explore the park via scenic walking trails, enjoy picnics in beautifully landscaped areas, or take in the view from the observation tower for a panoramic perspective of the falls and surrounding landscape. The park is also home to the Old Mill and Falls Overlook Café, where guests can relax and enjoy a meal with a view of the rushing waters. Whether you’re visiting in the warmth of summer or the crisp air of fall, Falls Park offers an unparalleled natural setting that draws both locals and tourists alike.

Centralizing arts and performance in downtown Sioux Falls, The Washington Pavilion was originally built as a high school in 1908. Eventually, the pavilion was transformed into an arts and science center preserving its historic architecture while adding a modern twist.
Today, it stands as one of Sioux Falls’ most cherished landmarks, offering an engaging mix of art, science, and cultural experiences that appeal to all ages. Seamlessly bringing them under one roof, the Washington Pavilion can cater a unique experience to every visitor.
One visitor from spring of 2024 went online and reviewed the pavilion saying, “It’s a wonderful place to educate and entertain kids for hours. Our 1.5-year-old loved playing and running around here. We are excited to go back for more fun!”
“My children are both budding artists and really enjoyed the opportunity to see the artwork and create their own,” another guest wrote.
The Washington Pavilion is now home to three main
attractions: the Visual Arts Center, the Mary W. Sommervold Hall for performing arts, and the Kirby Science Discovery Center. Each area offers unique experiences tailored to visual arts lovers, theater enthusiasts, science fans, and families looking for interactive, educational fun.
Regularly rotating exhibits in the visual arts center feature local, regional, and international artists, ensuring fresh, inspiring collections every visit. The center also offers workshops, artist talks, and community programs that make art accessible to all.
Throughout the year, lovers of performance can get tickets to the stunning venue for Broadway musicals, ballets, concerts, and local performances. With 1,800 seats, the theater is equipped with top-tier acoustics and sightlines, creating an immersive experience for audiences.
The pavilion’s performing arts season includes a variety of shows and concerts, from big-name Broadway hits to community theater productions and children’s performances. Youth programs, such as theater camps and workshops, allow kids to develop their creativity and

And don’t forget the available science facility! Highlights include a giant dinosaur exhibit, a physics playground, and a children’s studio. The Discovery Center regularly hosts themed science days and special events, making learning engaging for all ages.
To close your visit, the Pavilion recently acquired the beloved Parlour Ice Cream House. Located on the second floor of the science center, guests can stop in to enjoy
gourmet ice cream, fresh popcorn, and cold beverages. Or if the kids have worked up an appetite, you can also check out the cafe!
Completely renovated into a welcoming and cozy space, museum visitors can select from a fresh, ready-made menu with rotating entrees, market-fresh sandwiches, salads, soups, and more.
With the perfect blend of culture, history, and innovation, The Washington Pavilion has helped to shape Sioux Falls into a vibrant city. Whether you’re a resident or a visitor, the Pavilion offers a unique experience, highlighting the best of art, science, and community spirit in South Dakota.
Located just north of downtown Sioux Falls is Falls Park. Namesake of the city, the park consists of more than 123-acres and is more than just a tourist attraction. It’s a vital gathering space and a source of pride.
Falls Park hosts a variety of community events, including festivals, art installations, and seasonal light displays, making it a destination for families and visitors alike. Its role as a gathering place, coupled with its historic and scenic value, completes Falls Park’s importance to the community as both a recreational space and a cultural landmark.
Two of the biggest events in Sioux Falls include the Farmers Market and the Winter Wonderland. The Farmers Market runs from May to October and dates back to 1914! Its current location in Falls Park has been established for more than 30 years and has recently seen a resurgence in popularity. The market features a variety of vendors selling locally crafted goods to hot and ready foods, artisanal cheese, fresh baked goods, and more.
1. The Falls Overlook Cafe: Offering panoramic views of the cascading falls, this cafe is a beloved spot for both locals and tourists. From here, visitors can watch the river as it tumbles over pinkish Sioux quartzite rock, a unique geological feature that gives the park a distinctive look.
2. The Observation Tower: Standing at 50 feet tall, this
tower offers stunning 360-degree views of the park and downtown Sioux Falls.
3. The Queen Bee Mill Ruins: These historic ruins provide insight into the park’s industrial past. The remnants of the mill serve as a reminder of the aspirations to make Sioux Falls a hub of grain production and are a favorite stop for history buffs.
4. The Horse Barn Arts Center: This 19th-century horse barn was restored and transformed into a cultural center that showcases local art exhibits, workshops, and events.
5. Winter Wonderland at Falls Park: During the holiday season, Falls Park transforms into a Winter Wonderland with thousands of twinkling lights, decorations, and festive displays. Walking through the illuminated park with the falls in the background is a magical experience that draws visitors from around the area and beyond.
During the 2023 Winter Wonderland event there were 338,000 total LEDs and lights between 260 decorated trees and 215 light poles and one mile of garland. One of the best parts is that it is completely free to visitors. There are no fees to see the lights during the six weeks that they are on display.
Each of these stops highlights a different aspect of Falls Park, from historical remnants to natural beauty and community culture, making it a truly enriching destination year-round. Park hours are from 5 a.m. until midnight.

Whether you’re out for a run, taking a walk or just looking for some peace and quiet, connecting with nature can be a great escape.
The Mary Jo Wegner Arboretum & East Sioux Falls Historic Site, located on the east side of Sioux Falls, looks to help you do just that. With its 155 serene acres, you’ll find wetlands, gardens, plants, extensive opportunities for hiking and wildlife and glimpses into the past.
Mary Jo Wegner, a local environmental visionary, imagined a natural haven in Sioux Falls. When she first walked the area, she found stone quarries, rail lines, building foundations and more all tucked along the Big Sioux River. She dreamed of turning it into a space to ‘nurture connections between plants and people, past and present, in an inspiring natural setting that invites discovery.’ She wanted to make sure it would be here for generations to come.
Today that dream of hers is a reality. Visitors explore those same remnants that Mary Jo Wegner did – from the Sioux Falls Granite Company’s quarry to the Illinois Central Railroad line. Immerse yourself in the arboretum’s beautiful gardens and natural habitats. Already home to an Historic Bur Oak, a symbol of the Arboretum, the space now hosts themed gardens, prairie grasses and flowers. Learn how early settlers used native and imported plants to thrive and their impact on the Sioux Falls community.
Looking to learn more? Step into the Mabel and Judy Jasper Educational Center on the grounds. Completed in 2013, the Educational Center recreates East Sioux Falls’ unique one room L-shaped schoolhouse and houses educational activities for kids. It’s the perfect gift to honor Judy and her mother Mabel – both teachers in South Dakota. Judy says it was ‘a way of Mother and I had giving back to the families, the children and grandchildren of the lives that touched us in our teaching careers of 90 years.’
From programs and classes to further their mission, to fundraisers and events to raise awareness and funds to volunteering, there’s so many opportunities to get involved with the arboretum to bring you closer to your roots.

The Great Plains Zoo’s walkable, accessible campus is home to more than 120 animal species from six continents. Accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums, GPZ champions conservation, wildlife education, and family-friendly exploration year-round.
Zoo highlights include African hoofstock species like black rhinos, giraffes, zebras, and critically endangered bongos. Guests can participate in daily giraffe feedings during summer months, as well as interactive zookeeper chats.
The zoo recently completed an African lion exhibit with spacious indoor and outdoor guest viewing areas. The lion building also includes an indoor/ outdoor meerkat habitat. Next door, guests can enjoy lunch at the Roar
Café while watching the lions and meerkats explore and play.
During the summer, young guests can cool off in the splash pad, while adults sip a fresh-squeezed lemonade or draft beer. Events like Zoofari and monthly Adult Nights give grownups the chance to enjoy the zoo in a more relaxed, after-hours setting. Each Halloween, families can participate in ZooBoo, featuring local trick-or-treat vendors, decorations, and festive activities.
GPZ fulfills its mission of connecting and inspiring conservation of wild species and spaces through a robust education program. Zoo Camp, Zoo Cubs, and Girl Scout badge programs cover a wide variety of topics from zoo veterinary care to diverse animal habitats. Each day during the summer, guests can meet ambassador animals during Creature Features and join in the conversation at zookeeper chats. Bookworms engages the youngest zoo visitors with daily story times in the summer, and weekly programs during winter months.
Many of the animals living at the zoo are endangered and are part of species survival plans (SSP). SSPs help ensure the most diverse possible genetics contribute to the healthiest possible population of animals in human care. One example is the red wolf, whose wild population currently hovers around two dozen individuals. GPZ is home to a breeding pair of these rare carnivores and is working with other zoos to bolster wolf numbers in the wild.
In 1930, Sioux Falls assumed responsibility for development and began a permanent display in Sherman Park.
The zoo began as a private collection more than 120 years ago by Senator Richard F. Pettigrew.
In 1957, the Zoological Society of Sioux Falls (ZSSF) was established as a non-profit. The goal was to develop plans and put into place a modern 32-acre zoo.
It took a few years to develop, but the Great Plains Zoo opened in June of 1963.
1991 is when the zoo was accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
During 1984, the zoo expanded adding the Delbridge Museum of Natural History.
In addition to red wolf, GPZ participates in conservation efforts in South Dakota with endangered black-footed ferrets and Dakota skipper butterflies, and globally by supporting efforts to help black rhinos in Namibia and snow leopards in Nepal. A portion of admissions and gift shop sales support conservation efforts.
Strollers, wheelchairs, and electric scooters are available for rent. The zoo campus includes a mother’s room, family restrooms, and an adult-size changing table. Service animals must be registered at zoo admissions.

Palisades State Park is a small park doing big things. In July they completed an expansion project that nearly tripled the park area from 167 to 435 acres and doubled campsites to 77.

The new entrance at 48422 256th Street near Garretson, SD welcomes you to a truly unique geological lesson while you enjoy the great outdoors. You can’t miss the towering pink Sioux Quartzite cliffs along the west side of Split Rock Creek. Several vertical rock spires loom 50 ft. above visitors to lure rock climbers and adventurous hikers.
The rushing stream below meanders the length of the park grounds and provides ample spots on the east bank for fishing. Rainbow Trout, Tiger Trout, Black Crappie, Wiper and Bluegill make The Palisades a popular angling destination. If you forget your pole, they are available to checkout along with volleyball and lawn game equipment.
Bring your kayak or canoe to paddle the creek along the wall of rock and a pair of good shoes to hike the five trails that wind through the woodlands and atop the rocks. While the trails are rated somewhat difficult and steep, they are worth the challenge for the beautiful vistas they afford. Maps with trailhead locations are available upon request or online. Balancing Rock Trail (.6 mi.) leads to a spur trail and overlook platform for some stunning views of the park’s signature rose quartz formations.
Other recreational options are biking or walking the scenic park roads and across the 1908 Palisades Bridge which leads to the King and Queen Rock Trail (.2 mi.). Watch for glimpses of the birds and wildlife that call this park home.
Throughout the park are several historical markers with information on the early settlement of this area. Nature gave them the protective pillars of rock you see today as a fortress against the elements that blew across the prairie. Native American tribes, silver seeking miners, entrepreneurs from the East and outlaws of the wild West all found refuge in this small ravine.
Whether you reserve a campsite or cabin for an extended stay or make a full day of it, the park amenities include comfort stations, picnic shelters, playgrounds, dump station, electricity, water and vault toilets. Visitors must have an annual South Dakota state park sticker or purchase a day pass ($8) to enter.
