Corn Palace THE WORLD’S ONLY

For more than 125 years, this beautiful and delightfully whimsical landmark has welcomed the curious, the famous, and the road-weary right to the heart of Mitchell’s Main Street. The World’s Only Corn Palace is not just a building, it is a living celebration of artistic ingenuity and agricultural pride. Every summer, the exterior undergoes a jaw-dropping transformation. Nearly 325,000 colorful ears of corn are carefully sliced and nailed into place by a dedicated team of artisans, creating massive, intricate murals. Think of it as corn-by-numbers on a truly epic scale. The result is a stunning piece of folk art that honors the region’s farming heritage while turning heads from miles away.

A Community Effort, One Ear at a Time

The annual mural redesign is powered by patience, passion, and plenty of local pride. Thirteen naturally vibrant shades of corn are grown and harvested by Mitchell farmers, ensuring that each masterpiece is rooted in the region itself. Students from Dakota Wesleyan University bring fresh creativity to the process, designing murals that explore cultural themes, historic moments, and imaginative concepts. As one design comes down and another rises in its place, the Corn Palace remains in constant reinvention, a reflection of the resilience and innovation of the community behind it.

More Than Murals

The magic goes far beyond the exterior walls. Ongoing “corn-struction” projects continue to enhance the experience inside and out. A scenic viewing balcony offers a whole new perspective on the murals, while the welcoming Corn Palace Plaza invites guests to gather, linger, and snap photos with playful, selfie-ready sculptures and signage. Step inside and you are greeted by Italian-tiled pillars designed to resemble golden ears of corn, a gleaming tribute to the agricultural bounty that built this region.

A Stage for Legends

The main floor doubles as a walk through history, showcasing archival photos that reveal the Corn Palace’s many transformations over the decades. Displays celebrate world-class performers who have taken the stage, from the legendary Lawrence Welk to rock icon Pat Benatar. This legacy of entertainment has firmly established the Corn Palace as both an artistic marvel and a cultural hot-spot.

Honoring an Artistic Legacy

The second exhibit space pays tribute to Oscar Howe, the renowned Native American artist who served as the Corn Palace’s longest-running mural designer. Visitors can admire images of the remarkable murals he created from 1948 to 1971. His influence continues to inspire, connecting generations through powerful visual storytelling.

Originally built in 1892 to promote local agriculture, the Corn Palace has grown into one of South Dakota’s most beloved attractions. From concerts and sporting events to festivals celebrating regional heritage, it has hosted it all. With its playful charm and unmistakable personality, the Corn Palace proves that even something as humble as corn can become an unforgettable work of art.

THE ULTIMATE PHEASANT HUNTING DESTINATION

South Dakota reigns supreme in pheasant hunting, with an astonishing seven million birds spread across five million acres and an annual harvest of one million roosters. This abundance of ringneck pheasants makes the state a premier destination for hunters seeking world-class experiences in the field.

The plains surrounding Mitchell are a magnet for hunters nationwide. Whether seasoned professionals or first-time enthusiasts, visitors can take part in guided hunts, youth hunts, and time-honored traditions that define the sport. Year-round, Mitchell’s locally owned sporting goods stores cater to hunters, archers, and anglers, ensuring they have everything needed for a successful outing. Adding to the appeal, Mitchell’s 80,000-square-foot Cabela’s is more than just a store—it’s a wildlife museum, an aquarium showcasing regional fish, and a hub for the hunting community. The annual Pheasant Classic at Cabela’s brings hunters together with events like the Great American Banded Bird Hunt and special appearances by notable outdoor personalities, such as Benny Spies.

When pheasant season arrives, Mitchell rolls out the red carpet for hunters, embracing them as part of the community. Nowhere is this more evident than at the Pheasant Country Banquet, held on the Friday before opening day at the iconic Corn Palace. This gathering welcomes hunters from across the U.S. and Canada for an evening of camaraderie in a setting adorned with intricate corn murals, celebrating the sport and the culture that surrounds it. The city’s passion for conservation is equally strong, with the largest Pheasants Forever chapter in the nation working to preserve habitats and ensure a thriving pheasant population for future generations. In Mitchell, pheasant hunting is more than a pastime, it’s a way of life.

High School

Mitchell’s new high school is designed to support the city’s growing student population while providing modern learning environments. The 200,000-squarefoot facility will serve about 800 students and includes updated classrooms, three gymnasiums, and a twostory library. VITAL HISTORY + RESOURCES

The McGovern Legacy Museum, located on the DWU campus, offers a unique look at the lives of George and Eleanor McGovern, two of Dakota Wesleyan University’s most distinguished alumni.

The exhibit begins with the McGoverns’ humble upbringing in rural South Dakota, continues through the challenges they faced during World War II as a young married couple trying to raise a family, and their years as leaders in the

South Dakota Democratic Party. The 1972 presidential race is featured prominently, as is George McGovern’s passionate commitment to fighting global hunger.

During the self guided tour, visitors have the opportunity to view a variety of short films narrated by the late Senator McGovern and includes commentary from a variety of scholars and noted experts. Visit their website or Facebook for current hours.

DISCOVER THE DAKOTAS

Also located on the campus of DWU, the Dakota Discovery Museum offers visitors a rich look into the history and culture of the Great Plains. Through carefully curated exhibits and artifacts, the museum shares the stories of Native American tribes who lived in the region long before European settlement, as well as the pioneers who later shaped the area. Visitors can explore topics such as hunting, fur trapping and trading, farming, ranching, mining, and the search for religious freedom. The museum also highlights the lasting impact of the fur trade, the Gold Rush, and the determination of the people who built communities across the plains.

Historic Village Experience

The Dakota Discovery Historic Village brings history to life through several preserved buildings on the museum grounds. The Dimock Depot features an expanded exhibit on the Milwaukee Railroad and its role in local transportation and commerce. The Farewell Church

reflects the simple country worship of the early 1900s and continues to host small gatherings, performances, and weddings. Nearby, the Sheldon School provides a glimpse into early prairie education, while the Beckwith House, once home to a co-founder of the World’s Only Corn Palace, showcases life in Mitchell’s early years.

History and Art Under One Roof

Inside the museum, exhibits explore Plains Indian culture, the development of Dakota Territory railroads, and the perseverance of farmers and ranchers who settled the region. Displays also highlight the hardships faced during the Great Depression. Dakota Discovery further celebrates regional creativity through three art galleries featuring works from local artists, Western illustrator Charles Hargens Jr., and renowned Yanktonai Dakota artist Oscar Howe.

Building South Dakota Workforce Success

For more than two decades, Clayton Deuter has had a front-row seat to the life-changing impact of technical education. As the Vice President of Enrollment Services at Mitchell Technical College, he helps guide admissions, financial aid, scholarships, and marketing, but his connection to the school runs deeper than his job description.

“I’m about halfway through my 23rd year here,” Clayton says.

What started as a short stop in his career turned into a calling. Early in his professional life, Clayton worked as a counselor for troubled youth. While he valued the chance to work with young people, the environment was difficult, and success stories were rare. Eventually, he realized he wanted to work with students whose futures were just beginning to take shape.

“When

I came over here,

I thought I’d be

here three years and then go back into counseling,” Clayton adds.

“But I kind of fell in love with Mitchell Tech and all the things that we do here; how it changes young people’s lives.”

That passion grew even more personal when Clayton watched his own son attend Mitchell Tech and graduate from its power line program. Today, his son works as a successful power lineman in South Dakota, a path that reflects the kind of outcomes Mitchell Tech strives for every day.

At its core, Mitchell Tech’s philosophy is simple: give students the skills they need to succeed in real careers as quickly as possible. The school focuses on hands-on learning, pairing classroom fundamentals with practical experience that students can apply immediately.

“Our ideal student is someone who wants to learn in the classroom and then go apply it right away,” Clayton explains. “You might learn something in the morning and then go wire a house or at least put it to practice in a lab later that day.”

Most programs at Mitchell Tech are designed to be completed in one or two years, allowing students to move quickly from education to employment, and the results speak for themselves. Mitchell Tech boasts a remarkable 99% job placement rate for graduates, and roughly 88% of those students stay in South Dakota, strengthening the state’s workforce and local communities.

Several programs have earned national recognition for preparing students in high-demand industries. Electrical construction and maintenance, and the power line program are among the college’s most well-known offerings, training students to build and maintain the infrastructure that powers communities across the country. Agriculture programs, including agronomy, animal science, and ag business, also reflect the region’s strong agricultural roots. In healthcare, nursing, and radiologic technology programs, students are prepared to serve an aging population with critical medical skills.

Mitchell Tech continues to expand its facilities and programs to meet workforce needs. A new

building dedicated to the power line program will allow the school to increase enrollment and bring back its natural gas program. Additional healthcare programs are also in development.

“We’re looking at bringing on a physical therapy assistant program and possibly sonography around 2027,” Clayton states. “Those are high-need areas, especially with our aging communities.”

For students deciding where to pursue their education, Mitchell itself offers another advantage. With about 15,000 residents, the community provides a safe and supportive environment where students can focus on their studies while still enjoying plenty of activities outside the classroom.

“You feel safe here,” Clayton says. “It’s a smaller community, but we still have everything students need. And you can get across town in 15 minutes.”

That small-town environment also creates strong connections between students, instructors, and local employers. Businesses across the region partner closely with the college, offering part-time work and career opportunities that often turn into long-term employment after graduation.

Mitchell Tech recently reached a record enrollment of more than 1,300 students. Clayton believes its reputation is driven by the people who came before.

“Our best recruiters are our alumni and our industry partners,” he says. “Our graduates go out there, they’re successful, and they’re proud to say they came from Mitchell Tech.”

A GLIMPSE INTO HISTORY

The Carnegie Resource Center, located just a short walk from the Corn Palace, serves as a perfect complement to any Corn Palace tour. This historic center houses a permanent collection of Corn Palace memorabilia, offering visitors a glimpse into the evolution of Mitchell’s most famous landmark. In addition to these artifacts, the center features a rotating selection of exhibits that highlight various aspects of Mitchell’s history and genealogy, providing a deeper connection to the area’s rich heritage.

A notable feature of the Carnegie Resource Center is the stunning mural shown above, “Sun and Clouds and Rain Over Hills,” painted on the dome by renowned Dakota Yanktonai artist Oscar Howe. This breathtaking piece of art adds cultural significance to the building, which itself holds historical value. Originally constructed as a library in 1903 with funds from steel magnate Andrew Carnegie, the building stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of its benefactor and the vibrant history it preserves.

UNCOVER ANCIENT TREA SURES

The Mitchell Indigenous Archaeological Site & Museum, located on the shores of Lake Mitchell, is the only active archaeological site in South Dakota open to the public. This remarkable site offers visitors a glimpse into a 1,000-year-old village, where over four million artifacts have been uncovered. Inside the Thomsen Center Archeodome, summer guests can observe archaeology students and interns as they carefully excavate and uncover clues about the lives of the people who once lived here.

The Boehnen Memorial Museum showcases many of these recovered artifacts, along with a reconstructed earthen lodge that

offers insight into how the village’s inhabitants lived. A video presentation details the ongoing excavations, while the Shoppe Antiquary features the work of Native American artists, providing a unique cultural experience.

Outside, Audrey’s Garden highlights the plants that the villagers cultivated for food, medicine, ceremonies, dyes, and other essential needs. A Native American sculpture, benches, and interpretive signs create a tranquil and educational setting, allowing visitors to reflect on the history and heritage of the site.

JOEL ALLEN

The Saint John’s Bible

Dakota Wesleyan University is honored to display the Heritage Edition of The Saint John’s Bible in the McGovern Library—a magnificent work that stands as a testament to both artistic genius and spiritual devotion. As the first hand-inscribed and illustrated Bible in over 500 years, the original project represents an extraordinary achievement led by Donald Jackson, scribe to the Queen of England. The Heritage Edition captures the splendor of the original with exceptional printing quality, vivid illuminations, and whimsical animal sketches used to correct the eight rare mistakes, adding a touch of charm. Spanning seven folios, the Bible comprises 1,150 pages, 160 illuminations, and an astonishing 3.5 million hand-drawn letters. More than its grandeur, however, The Saint John’s Bible offers a sacred encounter with scripture, where the beauty of its craftsmanship invites readers to engage with the divine in new and profound ways.

TIM GOLDAMMER

Local Theatre Enthusiast

The Area Community Theatre (ACT) in Mitchell, SD, has been bringing quality live performances to the community for over 26 years. Based at the Pepsi-Cola Theatre for the Performing Arts, ACT is known for its high production values, from stunning lighting to detailed costumes and seamless scene transitions.

With a diverse repertoire, ACT appeals to all theatrical tastes. Their production of You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown was especially nostalgic—though I may be biased, having played Charlie Brown myself!

As a nonprofit, ACT is dedicated to accessibility and inclusivity, ensuring the arts remain a vital part of Mitchell. Through volunteer recognition and engaging performances, ACT continues to be a cultural cornerstone in the community.
