DIRECTOR KERRY TAYLOR

Kerry Taylor currently serves as Director of Bands for Westlake High School and Fine Arts Director for Eanes ISD. Mr. Taylor is beginning his 39th year as a band director in the Texas public schools; having completed five years in Katy ISD and 33 in Eanes ISD. He is currently the Music Director and Conductor of the Waterloo Wind Band, a community band in South Austin composed of musicians aged 16-80. Mr. Taylor is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin. Under Mr. Taylor’s direction, the Westlake High School Band has been named ‘Best in Class’ or ‘Runner-up’ at numerous concert band festivals. The Westlake Band has been a Finalist in the Texas 5A and 6A State Marching Contest and at BOA Regionals and Super-Regionals. In addition, the Westlake Band has made concert tours to the New York, Pacific Northwest, Canada and the British Isles. During Mr. Taylor’s tenure at Westlake HS the band has received numerous awards. In 1997 the John Philip Sousa Foundation presented the Westlake

The Chaparral Band has earned countless awards for excellence in performance during its 50 year history. In 2010 the band was chosen as one of only two schools nationwide to receive the “Sudler Shield” from the John Philip Sousa Foundation. This award, coupled with the “Sudler

Flag of Honor” won in 1999 makes the Chaparral Band one of only a handful of band programs nationwide to have received both of these awards presented for continued excellence and longevity in the fields of marching band, concert band and individual achievement. In addition, the band has three times been named “Texas Honor Band” (state champion for concert bands) and has consistently earned yearly

UIL Sweepstakes trophies for outstanding performances in marching, concert and sight-reading competitions.

The Chaparral Band has competed in the State Marching Contest on many different occasions. In 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2014 they placed in the top ten at this event and in 2012 the Chap Band finished 7th in the state.

The group has been named the Grand Champion of the Duncanville

Invitational in 2007 and has placed in the finals competition of Regional Band with the Sudler Flag of Honor and in 2010 the Sudler Shield. In 2016, the Phi Beta Mu international band fraternity honored the Westlake band with the inaugural “Program of Distinction Award.”

The Westlake Wind Ensemble has performed at the 2002 and 2013 Midwest Clinic, and for the American Bandmasters Association and the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles. In 2003, and again on January 2, 2017, the Westlake Chaparral Band performed in the Tournament of Roses Parade

in California.

Mr. Taylor is active as a clinician and adjudicator in Texas and states throughout the South. He has served the Texas Music Educators Association in many positions, including President of the 12,000+ member organization. His other professional memberships include Texas Bandmasters Association, Texas Music Adjudicators Association, Phi Beta Mu, National Band Association, Phi Mu Alpha and the American Bandmasters Association. He has received the UIL “Sponsor of Excellence” Award, and the Sousa Foundation “Legion of Honor” and “Sudler Order of Merit” awards. He is currently President-Elect of the

American Bandmasters Association. and Super-Regional BOA marching contests. The Chaparral Band was featured in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade on January 1, 2003 and again on January 2, 2017

The Westlake Wind Ensemble has performed at the prestigious World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles in Cincinnati in July of 2009 and three times (1979, 2002 and 2013) at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago. In 2006 the Wind Ensemble performed for the membership of the American Bandmasters Association at their annual convention in Dallas. Each of the four concert ensembles have performed (2005, 2009, 2013 and 2019) at the International Concert Band Festival held in

Carnegie Hall, New York, NY. The 2020-2021 Westlake Band and Elite Visual Ensemble boast a membership of 230 students. The dedication and musical abilities that serve as a foundation for ‘Chap Pride’ indicate a promising and successful season. ASSISTANT DIRECTORS

JANA ROBERTSON

Jana Robertson is in her ninth year as a music educator and her sixth year as the Assistant Director of Bands at Westlake High School in Austin, Texas. Her duties at Westlake include, teaching multiple concert ensembles, teaching the marching band, leading the Chap Jazz program, conducting the philharmonic orchestra, overseeing the color guard program, and all program branding.

Ms. Robertson holds a Bachelor of Music Education Degree from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Geaux Tigers! She is currently pursuing her Masters in Music Education Degree from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. Before returning to Westlake, Ms. Robertson was the Associate Director of Bands at Shoemaker High School in Killeen ISD. Ms. Robertson is proud to be a part of the many Westlake Alumni who return to serve the Eanes ISD community.

TAYLOR LAPRAIRIE

Taylor LaPrairie currently serves as an Assistant Director of Bands at Westlake High School in Austin, TX. Mr. LaPrairie instructs the Westlake Chaparral Marching Band, directs the Symphonic Band and Concert Band, and teaches beginning guitar classes. Mr. LaPrairie started teaching in Eanes ISD in 2019 as the Assistant Director of Bands at West Ridge Middle School before joining the high school staff in 2020. Mr. LaPrairie graduated from Michigan State University where he received his bachelor’s degree in Music Education. While at MSU, Mr. LaPrairie was a member of the MSU Wind Symphony, Spartan Marching Band, MSU Trombone Choir, and the MSU Chamber Winds. He also served as an instructor for the Spartan Youth Wind Symphony and served as a brass instructor and conductor of the SYWS Brass Choir. He was a member of the Honors Brass Quintet program from 2014-2018 and was awarded the Ruth Mistele Trombone Award in 2016, 2017, and 2018.

Outside of the school year, Mr. LaPrairie serves as a brass instructor for the Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps, a position he has held since 2018. Prior to joining the brass staff of Carolina Crown, Mr. LaPrairie marched baritone with the drum corps from 2014 to 2017. During his time with the corps, Mr. LaPrairie was the featured trombone soloist in 2016, baritone section leader in 2016 and 2017, was awarded the “Brass Member of the Year” in 2017 and served as the Horn Sergeant for the 2017 season.

TYLER SAMMONS

Tyler Sammons is in his 9th year as a band director and his 3rd year at Westlake High School. Mr Sammons earned his bachelor’s degree in music performance from the University of North Texas. Tyler is proud to be on the artist roster for Innovative Percussion drum sticks, REMO drum heads and Sabian cymbals. He is excited for another amazing fall season with the Chaparral Band!

ANDREW BARBERI

EVE DIRECTOR Andrew joined Eanes ISD as Director of the Elite Visual Ensemble in January 2017. He has taught and choreographed for several of the top Color Guards in the world, including Nease High School, 2011 Winter Guard International Scholastic Open Class Bronze medalist, and the Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps, 2016 DCI World Champions. Under Andrew’s direction the Elite Visual Ensemble has been in the top 5 at the Texas Color Guard Circuit State Championships for the last three years. They have also participated in the Winter Guard International World Championships in 2017 where they were a semifinalist.

KELLY BORLAND

GUARD INSTRUCTOR Kelly Borland is proud to be in her 23rd year as a guard instructor with the Chap Band and Winter Guard. Before joining the Westlake team, she was a guard instructor at Seguin High School as well as the leader and choreographer of the Louisiana State University guard for 5 years. Kelly earned a BS in Mathematics and a Masters in Social Work and was a Licensed Master Social Worker working with at-risk foster teens before moving to Austin.

RALEIGH TAYLOR

ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT Raleigh Taylor is serving her fifth year as the Administrative Assistant to the Eanes ISD Fine Arts Department and the Westlake High School Band. Ms. Taylor earned her Bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University (2016). A proud graduate of Westlake High School (2012) and the Chap Band, she continues her love of music and the arts, playing bass clarinet in the Waterloo Wind Band, a local community concert band.
