COVID-19 SERVICE IMPACTS

The current situation with the COVID-19 pandemic is continuously changing and operational requirements are dependent on provincial regulations, guidelines and recommendations. In-person recreation programs are only open to residents in the Durham Region Health Unit. For the most up to date information regarding facility operations and recreational programs visit www.scugog.ca/covid19.

All in-person programs have been labeled as Red level or Orange level programs based on current restrictions and recommendations. Please read each program carefully to know which level your desired programs run in.

Red Level Programs Red level programs will run in both the Red – Control level and the Orange – Restrict level.

Orange Level Programs Orange level programs will only run once the Durham Region Health Unit is placed in the Orange – Restrict level.

Registration can be done online at www.scugog.ca/registration or by calling the Scugog Community Recreation Centre (SCRC) at 905-985-8698. No in-person registration will be taken in the RedControl level at the SCRC.

Gender Equity in Recreation Sport: Community Grants Initiative Our virtual fitness programs that are designed to provide safe and healthy fitness opportunities for active women 55+, were made possible by the Canadian Parks and Recreation Association (CPRA) Gender Equity in Recreation Sport: Community Grants Initiative, a program supported by the Government of Canada.

Strength Training 18+ yrs Looking to add muscle and tone up? This class includes resistance exercises to build strength and muscle. The class is in partnership with Ashlea Jones Athletes in Training and is run by certified instructor Ashlea, or one of her qualified instructors. Choose from an in-person format or a virtual format funded through the Gender Equity in Recreational Sport Grant. This is a Red Level program.

Bootcamp 18+ yrs Join Ashlea or one of her certified instructors from Ashlea Jones, Athletes in Training for a one-hour cardiovascular class, which is guaranteed to give your body the ultimate workout. Bootcamp is a combination of strength, cardio, muscle endurance, flexibility, core, and functional movement patterns. This is a Red Level program.

Pickleball Court Reservations This program allows for a group of players to reserve a court online for themselves and three (3) other players. One participant will book the court and list the names, phone numbers and residency of each of the people participating with them for contact tracing. Join us to learn new thrilling forms, and adaptations of the classic favourite game dodgeball. Children will be separated into groups based on their age. This is a jumpstart funded program. This is an Orange Level program.

Cost: $31.25 Location: SCRC - Floor Pad Intermediate to Karate The intermediate Karate program is for participants who have completed the Introduction to Karate program and show an aptitude for karate. Participants should be committed to putting in the level of practice needed to become proficient in this discipline. Karate classes focus on a variety of skills and areas of personal growth, such as self-defense, self-confidence, personal discipline, respect for others, and physical conditioning. (GI will need to be purchased). This is a Red Level program.

Nerf Battle 6 to 10 yrs Grab your gear and prepare for battle! Participants will enjoy an active warm up, target practice, and variations of nerf battle challenges each week. 3 on 3 Ball Hockey 6 to 11 yrs Participants will be on a team with others that are approximately the same age as well as skill level. Teams will battle it out 3 on 3 style! Players will play using half the floor pad. There will be one-hour of game play per week. We are always looking for parent volunteers to be coaches to commit each week. Team requests will not be made. Your child will need; helmet with facemask, shin pads, elbow pads, stick, gloves, jock/jill, mouth guard and running shoes! Registration closes April 14 at 4:30 pm. Cartoon Computer Animation 7 to 11 yrs Dive into STEAM with animation technology. This program will enhance your child’s creativity and bring their inspiring stories to life incorporating the 12 principles of animation.

In this program, children will animate their own characters, create animated shorts and a final cartoon movie while developing logical thinking skills. Required: an Apple© Ipad or Android Tablet is required for this program. A computer, microphone and speakers are required for the video. This is a Red Level program.

Using Scratch (from MIT), a fun and easy to use multimedia software; kids will have great adventures creating games and animations. Healthy Kids, Mind, Body and Heart 11+ yrs Health and fitness programs teach children how to conquer challenges such as eating right, exercising, and living a healthy lifestyle. Our certified instructors through Ashlea Jones Athletes in Training will help each participant learn the essentials of proper diet, nutrition, exercise, weight management and monitoring. In addition to these life skills, health and fitness programs also benefit teenagers by addressing self-esteem and body image. This is a Red Level program.

The Lookout Youth Centre Grades 7 to 12 The Lookout is Scugog’s drop-in Youth Centre located on the second floor of the Scugog Community Recreation Centre (SCRC). The Lookout is a supervised drop-in space for youth in grades 7-12 to hang out and includes, free WiFi, PS4, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, arcade games, air hockey, foosball table, computers, board games, and a lounge space. Times and dates are listed below.

Youth Week National Youth Week is May 1 – 7 every year. It is a week dedicated to the celebration of youth and their active participation in their community. Whether it is recreation, drama, sport, dance, civic engagement, art, volunteerism or leadership, everyday young people are involved in meaningful activities during their discretionary time. National Youth Week is a time to honour their involvement. Stay tuned at www.scugog.ca/thelookout for virtual activities.

LEADERSHIP AND CERTIFICATIONS High Five Principles of Healthy Childhood Development (PHCD) 16+ yrs Parks and Recreation Ontario certifies recreation and sport program leaders to provide the best quality child programming using the five high five principles through this interactive and informative half-day workshop. Please note: This program is only open to residents of the Durham Region Health Unit. This is a Red Level program.

Stay Safe! Home Alone Safety with Red Cross 9 to 13 yrs Real-world scenarios often call on children to respond to challenges. The Stay Safe program teaches applicable and age-appropriate skills, while increasing and reinforcing a youth’s capacity to improve his or her own safety. Whether in their community or on their own, this group will be given better tools to Stay Safe in a variety of different situations. This is a Red Level program.

This spring break we are pleased to offer exciting and engaging camps for children between 4-13 years old. You will receive an email the week before camp starts outlining everything your child(ren) needs to bring for the week. Participant and staff safety is our top priority. Fit for Sport Camp: 4 to 12 yrs Children will enjoy a variety of activities aimed at developing their athletic skills with different sports and sport related games. VIRTUAL CAMPS AND PROGRAMS Online Discoveries Camp Kit: 4 to 10 yrs Enjoy the fun of camp from home! Children will pick up a Camp Kit at the Scugog Community Recreation Centre with a variety of age appropriate crafts, games and activities.

The kits also include instructions and interactive activities to enjoy based on different themes including: Spectacular Science, Up and Active, Messy Masterpieces, Characters and Cartoons, and Movin’ and Groovin’. Each day over Spring Break campers can join their leader and other campers for a virtual meet up in the afternoon. Technology requirements are a computer or tablet with video/audio capability and access to reliable internet. Camp Kits can be picked up April 9 between 8:30 am and 6:00 pm from the Scugog Community Recreation Centre. This is a Red Level program.

Leadership in Training: 11 to 13 yrs Join other youth for a head start on our leadership program!

This online interactive program focuses on leadership topics such as team work, communication, positive role modeling, problem solving and more. Participants will spend the morning with their program leader and other youth online on Zoom and afternoons with take home activities. By the end of the week each leader will use their new skills to facilitate an activity to the group. Technology requirements are a computer or tablet with video/audio capability and access to reliable internet. This is a Red Level program.

Sportball: 4 to 7 yrs Join Coach Paul for live Sportball classes over Zoom. For 30 minutes each morning over the Spring Break, children will participate in classes designed specifically for the sport of the day, learning and practicing Soccer, Basketball, Hockey, Baseball, and Volleyball, along with motor skills and exercise in a high energy program. Cartoon Animation Dive into STEAM with animation technology. Children will be introduced to the creative world of cartoon animation, learn the basics of animation design and incorporate the animating principle of ‘squash and stretch'. At the end of the workshop, children will experience first-hand the potential for what great animators they can become! Required: an Apple© Ipad or Android Tablet is required for this program. A computer, microphone and speakers are required for the video.

Games and Animations Programming This workshop is an excellent opportunity for children to be introduced to the basics of coding and game design. Using Scratch (from MIT), a fun and easy to use multimedia software, children will create games and animations while also solving problems and communicating ideas using stackable blocks of code. Required: a computer (PC, Mac or Chromebook), microphone and speakers.

Ipad Video Game Creation This workshop is an excellent opportunity for kids to be introduced to the basics of video game creation on their IPad©. By the end of the workshop participants will have created their own game as well as learnt coding concepts such as; If statements, conditions, variables, sequencing and more Note: an Apple© Ipad is required for this program (other tablets will not work). A computer, microphone and speakers are required for the video.

Game Design and Development with Godot Learn coding and game design while creating your own version of Air Hockey! From sound effects, object oriented programming, to physics-based calculations. This is a great way to expand or begin your child’s journey into game development. Required: a computer (PC or Mac), microphone and speakers.

VR Character Design This workshop is for every child interested in 3D Character Design and Virtual Reality (VR)! Children will be introduced to creating an industry level, and textured 3D character. This character will then be added to a personalized 3D environment created by your child. Required: a computer (PC or Mac), microphone and speakers.
