COVID-19 SERVICE IMPACTS
The current situation with the COVID-19 pandemic is continuously changing and operational requirements are dependent on provincial regulations, guidelines and recommendations. In-person recreation programs are only open to residents in the Durham Region Health Unit. For the most up to date information regarding facility operations and recreational programs visit www.scugog.ca/covid19. All in-person programs have been labeled as Red level or Orange level programs based on current restrictions and recommendations. Please read each program carefully to know which level your desired programs run in. Red Level Programs Red level programs will run in both the Red – Control level and the Orange – Restrict level. Orange Level Programs Orange level programs will only run once the Durham Region Health Unit is placed in the Orange – Restrict level. Be sure to visit www.scugog.ca for a detailed list of what to expect at our facilities and new procedures in place to protect the health and safety of all staff and participants.

Strength Training 18+ yrs Looking to add muscle and tone up? This class includes resistance exercises to build strength and muscle. The class is in partnership with Ashlea Jones Athletes in Training and is run by certified instructor Ashlea, or one of her qualified instructors. Pickleball Court Reservations This program allows for a group of players to reserve a court online for themselves and three (3) other players. One participant will book the court and list the names, phone numbers and residency of each of the people participating with them for contact tracing. Participants should be committed to putting in the level of practice needed to become proficient in this discipline. Healthy Kids, Mind, Body and Heart 11+ yrs Health and fitness programs teach children how to conquer challenges such as eating right, exercising, and living a healthy lifestyle. Our certified instructors through Ashlea Jones Athletes in Training will help each participant learn the essentials of proper diet, nutrition, exercise, weight management and monitoring. In addition to these life skills, health and fitness programs also benefit teenagers by addressing self-esteem and body image. This is a Red Level program. The Lookout Youth Centre Grades 7 to 12 The Lookout is Scugog’s drop-in Youth Centre located on the second floor of the Scugog Community Recreation Centre (SCRC). The Lookout is a supervised drop-in space for youth in grades 7-12 to hang out and includes, free WiFi, PS4, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, arcade games, air hockey, foosball table, computers, board games, and a lounge space. Times and dates are listed below.
Youth Week National Youth Week is May 1 – 7 every year. It is a week dedicated to the celebration of youth and their active participation in their community. Whether it is recreation, drama, sport, dance, civic engagement, art, volunteerism or leadership, everyday young people are involved in meaningful activities during their discretionary time. VIRTUAL CAMPS AND PROGRAMS Online Discoveries Camp Kit: 4 to 10 yrs Enjoy the fun of camp from home! Children will pick up a Camp Kit at the Scugog Community Recreation Centre with a variety of age appropriate crafts, games and activities. The kits also include instructions and interactive activities to enjoy based on different themes including: Spectacular Science, Up and Active, Messy Masterpieces, Characters and Cartoons, and Movin’ and Groovin’. Each day over Spring Break campers can join their leader and other campers for a virtual meet up in the afternoon. Technology requirements are a computer or tablet with video/audio capability and access to reliable internet. Children will be introduced to the creative world of cartoon animation, learn the basics of animation design and incorporate the animating principle of ‘squash and stretch'. At the end of the workshop, children will experience first-hand the potential for what great animators they can become! Required: an Apple© Ipad or Android Tablet is required for this program. Games and Animations Programming This workshop is an excellent opportunity for children to be introduced to the basics of coding and game design. Using Scratch (from MIT), a fun and easy to use multimedia software, children will create games and animations while also solving problems and communicating ideas using stackable blocks of code. Ipad Video Game Creation This workshop is an excellent opportunity for kids to be introduced to the basics of video game creation on their IPad©. By the end of the workshop participants will have created their own game as well as learnt coding concepts such as; If statements, conditions, variables, sequencing and more Note: an Apple© Ipad is required for this program (other tablets will not work). A computer, microphone and speakers are required for the video. Game Design and Development with Godot Learn coding and game design while creating your own version of Air Hockey! From sound effects, object oriented programming, to physics-based calculations. This is a great way to expand or begin your child’s journey into game development. Required: a computer (PC or Mac), microphone and speakers. VR Character Design This workshop is for every child interested in 3D Character Design and Virtual Reality (VR)! Children will be introduced to creating an industry level, and textured 3D character. This character will then be added to a personalized 3D environment created by your child.
