Scugog is situated on treaty land that is steeped in rich indigenous history. Today, we acknowledge that we are gathering on the traditional territories of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation. We recognize and deeply appreciate the historic Indigenous connection to this land and recognize the contributions First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples have made, both in shaping and strengthening this community in particular, our province and country as a whole. We're grateful for the opportunity to meet here and we thank all the generations of people who have taken care of this land - for thousands of years.
Message from The Mayor It is my pleasure on behalf of the Township of Scugog Council to welcome you to the 2022 Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. The Scugog Sports Hall of Fame is a celebration of our sporting history. Tonight we celebrate and acknowledge the accomplished athletes, those who have played a significant role in building sport in our community, the pioneers, and promoters of sport in Scugog. I would like to thank the Sports Hall of Fame Committee for organizing tonight’s celebration and for the support of our sponsors. This evening would not be possible without your outstanding efforts. Message from The Committee We are excited to be back to a place where we can once again publicly recognize and celebrate the sports heroes of Scugog. During the past two years, we have focused our efforts on continuing the legacy left by former Curator and SHOF inductee, Wayne Venning. The artifact and memorabilia collection of over 500 items has been categorized and catalogued. We have acquired permanent storage space from the township to ensure preservation and protection of the collection and we have acquired additional exhibit space on the lower level of the arena. Webpages dedicated to the Sports Hall of Fame under the scugog.ca website highlight former inductees, coming events and allow online access to nomination forms. We encourage you to check out the webpages and provide your feedback and suggestions. Thanks to all who continue to support the Scugog Sports Hall of Fame with nominations, donations, sponsorship and time. Master of Ceremonies Shawn Lackie Shawn grew up in Port Perry and played many sports representing his home town. He played Junior C hockey and was one of the original members of the first Flamingo Pastries team. He also played junior football in the region. Shawn enjoyed a 20-year career in TV, mostly covering sports, working on CIAU football, CFL Football, NHL Hockey, the World Juniors, the Olympics and NHL Entry Draft among others. He was instrumental in the launch of a new sports network called Headline Sports in the late 90s. Shawn was thrilled when he was named VP of Communications for the Canadian Football League (his dream job). Following his stint at the CFL, Shawn moved into the world of real estate where he has been for almost 20 years. He served on the Scugog Sports Hall of Fame Selection Committee from 2014-2018 and also spent time on the Town Hall 1873 Board of Directors. Shawn lives in Port Perry with his wife, Brenda. We are so happy to have Shawn as master of ceremonies for tonight’s event.

Guest Speaker Gary Edgar Gary enjoyed a long career as a teacher and coach with the Durham District School Board. He coached many teams and established Regional championships in a number of sports and was the first Convenor for the Durham Track and Field Championships held at Oshawa Civic Fields. He served as Chief of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island from 1993-1997 and received an honourary Degree of Doctor of Laws from UOIT in June 2014 as recognition for his leadership and passion for First Nation rights. He was inducted to the Scugog Sports Hall of Fame in 2007 with our first class of inductees as a talented multi-sport athlete and winner of the prestigious Tom Longboat Award for the Region of Southern Ontario. This award is presented to indigenous athletes who demonstrate sportsmanship and are a positive cultural role model. The Hall of Fame committee was fortunate to have Gary as a part of our selection committee from 2011-2018. Gary continues to be physically active and can be found on the golf course on most sunny days. He was selected as one of the torch bearers for the 2015 Pan Am games, carrying the torch down Queen Street, Port Perry. He recently moved from the island and now lives in Port Perry with his wife, Alice.

Celebrating 15 YEARS Since the first volunteer committee meeting in 2006 and the first Induction Ceremony in 2007, 60 plaques have been mounted on the wall; celebrating the commitment of builders, the successes of teams and the dedication of individual athletes. Future potential Hall of Famers and Sports Pioneers have been recognized. Committee members have changed over the years and we welcomed new faces since our last ceremony in 2019. We appreciate the work and commitment of past committee volunteers who built a foundation that allowed this committee to carry on with adaptability during the pandemic. The artifact and memorabilia collection that officially started in 2009 by former Volunteer Curator, Wayne Venning, continues to grow with donations from inductees and the community. Additional exhibit space now allows us to display more of the collection for the public to view, appreciate and reminisce. We expanded our online presence with new dedicated pages on the Township of Scugog website. Sports organizations are essential to our sports history and we will continue to celebrate milestone anniversaries and a permanent plaque, sponsored by the Lake Scugog Historical Society, will be added to the exhibit space to acknowledge the established dates of sports organizations in Scugog. There are still many builders, athletes and teams that need to be celebrated for their contributions to our sports history. We look forward to acknowledging them at future events.

A family devoted to the sport of equestrianism, Ian Roberts, his wife Kelly Plitz and their son Waylon are individually inducted having represented Canada in multiple international equestrian competitions. In 1982, Ian was named Canadian Intermediate Champion and was first long-listed to the Canadian Team. A Level III coach since 1987, Ian was voted the 1989 Ontario Horse Trials Association's Coach of the Year and was named both Male Rider and Male Coach of the Year by the Ontario Equestrian Federation in 1995. In 1996, Ian won both the Canadian Advanced Championships and the Canadian Intermediate Championships, making Ian the only rider to win both titles in the same year. Ian competed as a member of the Canadian Equestrian Team in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens and the 2006 World Championships in Germany. Ian celebrated a bronze medal win at the Central American games in 2013 as a coach for the Costa Rican Eventing team. In 1982, Kelly Plitz joined the Canadian Equestrian Team and that meant she and her horse, Dialadream, got the chance to compete in the world equestrian championships. Kelly's success continued as an eventing rider at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles where she was top Canadian in eventing. 10

Waylon first represented Canada at the age of 14 at the 2002 FEI Children’s Final for Show Jumping in Brazil. He then went on to compete at the North American Junior and Young Rider Championships in eventing on five separate occasions. Waylon is a 7time winner of the Royal Winter Fair Indoor Eventing Challenge in Toronto, in addition to representing Canada at the Pan Am games in 2007 winning a team silver medal, and the 2017 Pan Am games winning a team bronze medal.

Kate is inducted as a builder of sport for her outstanding media career as a sports broadcaster. Born and raised in Port Perry, Kate pursued a career in sports broadcasting, joining TSN in 2014 where she was paired with Natasha Staniszewski, forming the networks first female anchor team on TSN’s flagship program SportsCentre. Kate has hosted many marquee sports events, including TSN Olympic Morning in 2012, CBC Olympic hockey in PyeongChang in 2018, NCAA March Madness, the NBA Draft and the Grey Cup. She is the host of the CFL and Toronto Raptors broadcasts on TSN. In 2019, her work on the FIFA Women’s World Cup earned her a nomination for a Canadian Screen Award for best sports host. On March 24, 2021, she was part of NBA history hosting the first ever all female broadcast for the Raptors. In addition to her broadcasting career, Kate founded and hosted the first HER MARK Summit in July 2017; a gathering of speakers, athletes and educational panels for 200 hand-picked Canadian female high school students. HER MARK aims to empower the next generation of female leaders. For her outstanding work as a Canadian television sportscaster and her dedication as a role model to inspire the next generation of female leaders, she was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws by her alma mater, the University of Ontario Institute Of Technology.

The RH Cornish Coaching Team TEAM - BUILDERS Sponsored by: Doug Scott - Precision Construction
From 1972 through 1989 a team of teachers from RH Cornish Public School gave township youth a love for sports. This team, created under the leadership of principal John Hogg is inducted in recognition of their longevity in coaching. John Hinch was a part-time physical education teacher and vice-principal who coached multiple sports and was a founding member of Durham Elementary Athletic Association (DEAA). Reg Philip began teaching at Cornish in '72 and coached curling. Reg created the year end MUDCAT spiel drawn from the heritage of mudcat fishing in Lake Scugog. Reg fostered a life-long love of curling for many students. Clive Roane was instrumental in coaching gymnastics, track and field and soccer throughout the 70’s and 80’s both at Cornish and in the township with the Scugog Soccer Association. Rob Smart was a key team member, starting in the early 70’s and continuing throughout the 80’s coaching track and field, basketball, and volleyball. Darla Thomas (Sells) joined the team of teachers in 1973 to coach gymnastics, cross country running, volleyball and basketball. Darla was instrumental in creating evening gymnastics programs for township youth to participate in and organized skating at the old arena downtown.

The RH Cornish Coaching Team Continued..
Ken Smart was recruited from Epsom Public School in 1979 to join his brother Rob at Cornish coaching basketball, volleyball, track and field and softball. As the school population grew, Wayne Addison joined Jim Justynski, Graham Hewitt and Dave Brownson in the 1980’s to coach multiple sports including basketball, volleyball, track and field and cross country running. In the 70’s and 80’s there was a saying in DEAA that if you wanted to know how good your team or athlete was you needed to “go through the north”. This team of teachers have many winning banners hung in the gymnasium of RH Cornish Public School; however, their ultimate success is fostering a love of sport for many children in the 70’s and 80’s that continues for generations.

Anyone who was not born in Scugog and resided in Durham Region and has participated in sport in Scugog and has distinguished themselves at the local, amateur or professional level; 5. Anyone above, who after a local amateur career moves into professional sports or university/college or amateur sports elsewhere and is deemed worthy by the committee; 6. Any team that has won a championship at the district, provincial, national or international level; 7. Automatic selection shall be for any Scugog athlete who wins an Olympic medal or places first, second or third in any recognized national or international championship. Any further accomplishments from those described above may be recognized at a later date if the Committee determines that later success warrants; 8. Historical sporting venues may also be considered.
