A NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER It’s Time to Come Together Although I enjoy putting this publication together each year, it’s almost a shame that it’s needed. I have had friends who have had bad experiences at businesses just because they are gay. There were stories from across the nation of businesses turning away LGBT customers after changes in state laws. An Indiana business even thought it was OK to put up a sign saying they wouldn’t serve certain customers. When same sex marriage was passed, many businesses associated with wedding planning didn’t want to work with gay couples. They considered it an improper marriage. A clerk in one state was jailed because she refused to issue marriage licenses to same sex couples. All sorts of discrimination still exist in our country. It even seems like we find ways to create more discrimination. A woman in Charlotte County feels “traditional” couples are now being discriminated against because her marriage license says “spouse” rather than “husband” and “wife.” As a society, it seems we must always have some minority to pick on. We really enjoy picking on people who are “different.” It happens worldwide and it’s happened probably since the beginning of time. Whites discriminated against blacks, Native Americans were displaced from their homes to make room for a new country, Nazis hated Jews (and basically anyone else who wasn’t like them), men discriminated against women, women couldn’t vote. The list goes on and on. Some of that same horrible treatment of individuals happens today. I hate to sound like a beauty queen contestant but can’t we just have world peace? Why can’t everyone just get along? We are all human. People are people no matter their race, gender, ethnicity, skin color, age, religion or nationality. This directory and resource guide celebrates the many great people and businesses in Southwest Florida who do want equality for all. They support the LGBT community and their business doors are open to everyone. These are the types of businesses and people the LGBT community should support in return. If we all work to improve ourselves and encourage more acceptance of different ideas and lifestyles, then maybe there will be a time when every business and every organization welcomes every individual. BEPROUDSWFL.COM’S ADVOCATES OF THE YEAR Three people were recognized for their work in the LGBT community during the BeProudSWFL.com Community Picnic in August at Lakes Regional Park in south Fort Myers.
planned social events and field trips to local nonprofit LGBTQ organizations; and worked closely with C.A.R.E.S suicide prevention founder to raise awareness.
About 150 people attended the event, also sponsored by the Rainbow Pages business and resource guide. The family event included food, Bubble Soccer, volleyball and other activities.
She was a co-founder of the Pride Center of SWFL and a board member of Pride SWFL, helping plan last year’s Pride event. At her work, she has planned fundraisers for EARS Animal Rescue, organized the first community bake sale in Port Charlotte for Cookies for Kids’ Cancer and organized volunteer trips for Relay For Life and the Special Olympics.
BeProudSWFL.com awarded Advocates of the Year in three categories. The winners were: Youth Advocate of the Year: Emarie Wakefield The 9-year-old uses her voice to speak out about equality for all and anything she considers to be an injustice. She does so through a blog Emmie Out Loud you can find on beproudswfl.com, videos and social media. She volunteers at United Way and planned a diaper drive for Our Mother’s Home. Emmie is the kind of person who you will find talking to the shy child in the corner, the kids being bullied and she’ll let the bullies know what they are doing is wrong. Collegiate Advocate of the Year: Nicole Lamorte Nicole has proven to be a leader for many great causes in our community. She is president of the GSA of Edison State College 2014-2105. She has created a safe, fun, educational space for LGBTQ students. She organized club meetings and community involvement;

Advocate of the Year: Katherine Lowry Katherine is someone who has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to help the transgender community. She organized transgender support groups for youth and adults. Support groups are available for the transgender individual as well as their family and significant others. She is founder of the GET Network Foundation – The Gender Equality Trust Network Foundation. She recently held workshops featuring key medical professionals serving the transgender community and she’s arranged guest speakers to assist with resume writing and interview skills for employment opportunities. It is a pleasure to honor Katherine Lowry for all the work she has done to help so many.

Community Picnic BeProudSWFL.com sponsored a Community Picnic in August  at Lakes Regional Park in south Fort Myers. About 150 people attended the picnic that celebrated the same sex marriage ruling and other victories for the LGBT community this year. It was also a reminder that there is still much work to be done. The event featured volleyball, Bubble Soccer and other games. Three Advocates of the Year awards were handed out as well. A new organization formed in 2015 to serve the transgender community. The GET Network Foundation, which stands for Gender Equality Trust, was formed to provide support and education for transgender individuals and their family members. The GET Network Trust Foundation was established to empower, inspire, and facilitate trust and equality for everyone regardless of gender assigned at birth. The organization provides support groups for adults, teens and children. The support groups usually meet the first Saturday of the month at St. John the Apostle, 3049 McGregor Boulevard. About 50 people attended a special lecture by two prestigious doctors in July at St. John the Apostle Church.
