Print copies are mailed to subscribers and are made available at nearly 1,000 locations throughout Southwest Florida. The publisher of the Rainbow Pages, Michelle Hudson, and other team members are very involved in the community. Dr. Potter wins posthumous Advocate of the Year Award Dr. Clinton Potter has been named as the posthumous Rainbow Pages Advocate of the Year for 2021 for his life-long dedication to fighting for eqality. Dr. Potter was an intregal part of the inaugural Naples Pride and supported many local nonprofit agencies. Founder of Advanced Individualized Medicine, Dr. Potter passed away from complications due to Covid-19 in August. Known for his dedication to equality in medicine, Dr. Potter felt everyone deserved access to high-quality health care and that it should be more individualized and personalized. He focused on wellness, prevention and alternative therapies that best met the health needs of his patients. “Dr. Potter was committed to his patients and his community,” said Lori-Ann Martell, practice administrator. “Even in his final hours, he was concerned about the welfare of his patients. He wanted to make sure we would continue to encourage his patients to get vaccinated and do all we can to protect them from this terrible virus.” Dr. Potter, 62, died Aug. 18, at Physicians Regional after spending several days in the Intensive Care Unit. He was a cancer survivor and had gone through radiation therapy, making him more vulnerable to the virus even with a vaccination. Born in Miami, Dr. Potter moved to Los Angeles to attend the University of Southern California, where he earned a degree in Psychobiology. He then moved to New York and earned his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of
Medicine. He returned to California where he practiced family medicine for nearly 20 years. During that time, he fought for equality in medicine at the front line of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in San Francisco. One of his great passions was serving as Camp Medical Director at Camp Hakuna Matata, a summer camp for children and their families affected by HIV/AIDS. Dr. Potter was an attending Emergency Specialist at several prestigious health systems, including St. Luke’s Hospital in San Francisco, University of California, and Stanford Medical Center. In 2010, Dr. Potter returned to Florida to care for his ailing parents. He served as a volunteer physician at the Neighborhood Health Clinic until opening Advanced Individualized Medicine in 2016 in Naples. When he founded AIM, Dr. Potter wanted to continue his focus on equality in medicine. But his fight
for equality extended beyond medicine. He volunteered in the community and served as a member of the board that founded the Naples ride organization and helped plan the first Pride festival. RAINBOW PAGES

Financial Moves for Life’s ‘Inflection Points’ You’ve probably heard or read about inflection points. The term has a specific definition in mathematics, but it’s also used widely to describe historical or technological events, such as the Industrial Revolution or the creation of the internet – events that changed human existence in some important way. However, you have personal inflection points, too – and when they occur, you’ll need to make the right financial moves. Here are four of the most important of these inflection points, along with suggestions on dealing with them: • Marriage – When you get married, you and your spouse will need to discuss a variety of financial issues: What assets and liabilities do you each bring to the marriage? Should you combine your finances or continue with separate accounts? Is one of you a “saver” while the other is a “spender”? Do you share similar investment philosophies, or is one of you much more aggressive than the other? You don’t necessarily have to agree on everything, but you should at least try to gain enough knowledge so you can avoid unpleasant surprises, such as hidden debts, and find enough common ground so your household can advance toward your common financial goals. • New child – When you welcome a new child into your family, you’ll need to make sure you have adequate life insurance. You’ll also want to review the beneficiary designations on any existing insurance

policies, as well as on your IRA and 401(k). And if you can afford it, you may want to start contributing to a college fund, Brad Jessen possibly using a 529 savings plan, which can provide you with tax advantages as you put money away for your child’s higher education. • Divorce – It’s unfortunate, but true: Divorce is still pretty common, and it’s neither pleasant nor cheap. You might not be able to avoid some of the costs, such as lawyers’ bills, but if you and your ex-spouse can work together amicably, you both may be able to avoid serious financial disruptions. You’ll need to work out how to divide your financial assets, paying attention to beneficiary designations, which you may well need to change. Also, as a newly single individual, you may need to review and revise your long-term investment strategy to accommodate changes in your goals and your retirement income. • Retirement – By the time you retire, you will have hopefully been investing in your IRA and 401(k) or other retirement plan for several
decades. But once you do retire, you’ll need to determine how much you can afford to withdraw each year from your various retirement accounts. Your withdrawal rate will depend on your age, your asset level and your retirement lifestyle. And you’ll also want to consider other issues: Are you prepared to deal with health care costs? Even with Medicare, these costs may be higher than they were when you were working. And how about your estate plans? Are they up to date? Have you protected your family from the possibility of your estate going through the time-consuming, expensive and public process of probate? You may need to work with your financial, tax and legal advisors to develop an effective estate strategy. Why unmarried partners should care about estate planning More and more people are entering long-term committed relationships without getting married. Unfortunately, state and federal laws do not protect unmarried couples as they do married couples when it comes to inheritance, taxes, and decision-making powers. Therefore, it is important that unmarried couples engage in comprehensive financial and estate planning because without proper planning, your partner could end up with nothing should you pass away. The Law Is Not on Your Side. If you do no estate planning, your state’s intestacy statute will determine who will receive your money and property and the amount each legal heir will receive. While laws vary by state, generally speaking, your money and property will go first to your surviving spouse (if you are married), then to your children or grandchildren, your parents, your siblings, and your siblings’ children, in that order, depending on who survives you. Additionally, if you have a life insurance policy and fail to complete the beneficiary designation form, the proceeds from the policy may be paid to your estate, necessitating the costly and time-consuming probate process. Similarly, if your retirement account does not have a named beneficiary, that may also end up going through probate and cause unintended income tax consequences. “Blended Family” Concerns. With blended families (someone who remarries and has children from a previous relationship), the planning objective is to make sure that the

children from the previous relationship are not completely disinherited. In many instances, the new spouse’s claim to the deceased’s money and property has priority. However, if you have children from a previous relationship but are not married to your partner, the concern becomes protecting your partner who, under the law, would not be entitled to anything because your children would more than likely receive everything. Actions to Take Now If protecting your partner is important to you, you may wish to consider the following steps: • Review your beneficiary designations. They must be filled out correctly and properly submitted to be effective. • Review how your accounts and property are owned. Living together in your house does not mean you both own it, nor does simply helping with mortgage payments. It is important to know who has access
to the account used for household expenses so the healthy partner can continue paying the bills if one of you becomes incapacitated or passes away. • \If you do own a home or other real estate together, consider a joint ownership agreement to protect both of you should there ever be a disagreement over how to handle things. A comprehensive estate plan should address who will receive your money and property at your death, who will make financial and medical decisions for you if you cannot, and outline your end-of-life wishes. — By Gregory Herman-Giddens, Esq. Project Help Project HELP is a state-certified Sexual Assault and Rape Recovery Crisis Center in Collier County.
