The world of historic preservation has captured my interest as an interior designer because I value the responsible and thoughtful intersection of the old and new. This has compelled me to incorporate both in my work while retaining a harmonius balance between the two. I continue to explore innovative and even unprecedented approaches to preservation, re-use, and restoration.

Design that has a positive impact on local communities is integral to my project approach. Some of my most satisfying work was the design of a gastroflea incubator and market in a low-income housing community surrounded by a veritable food dessert.

The task of addressing community needs while implementing good design that reflected the spirit of the neighborhood was exciting and challenging. This

has fueled my desire to pursue social design.

My body of work tends to be very organic in form, using a variety of textures, colors, and materials.

Blending styles is second nature to me. Without avoiding the practical, I avoid the usual and the symmetrical, often employing the element of surprise.

Using fresh materials and creative techniques, reflects my view of diversity as a fundamental value.

Collaborative environments bring out the best in me.

In this context, I am able to identify the strengths of my teammates in order to best capture the potential of the group. I am curious, observant, tactile, resourceful, and goal oriented - always looking for new ways to arrive at practical solutions.

concept. my conceptual approach generally starts with a directive in response to a problem or a piece of art. often i latch onto words, phrases, or forms that stand out immediately and dig deep. what do they mean? what pictures do they evoke? how can I express those words and forms in a meaningful and architectural language? the following projects are expressions in my quest to attribute a design language to the discoveries i have made over the course of my design education.

clarity. project: integrative health center single space study concept: a space that gives clarity to those suffering from chronic pain. the form was derived from muscular nodules caused by tension. the space uses the rhythm of the muscle fibers and the shape of the nodules to create a place that gives visual privacy while letting in light and shadow. the result is a soothing medidation space which offers relief from their condition and from the harshness of the exterior

the gap. project: noguchi museum annex in dumbo, brooklyn concept: the ancient japanese practice of wari-modoshi (splitting and returning) was used to create this model by disassembling the pieces of Isamu Noguchi’s sculpture, ‘another land’, and reassembling it differently. the gaps and perforations that were noted in the photography became the concept for the layout of the museum annex - from furniture typologies - to stair and floor plate divisions - to wall types.

Contents: the joint amplification + obfuscation radiation. a live/work loft vetro a rui. a watercolor study of crown glass residential redux. a multi-generational family dwelling

the joint. project: study of joinery concept: using found objects, the challenge to find creative ways of joining materials without traditional joining materials. the study yeilded a flexible rectangular form of rolled newspaper wrapped and, penetrated, and connected with twine.

amplification + obfuscation. project: a model study based on diagraming the decomposition of a the star fruit concept: through observation, diagramming, and drawing, a study of the star fruit revealed its composition and modeled the beauty in its irregularities.

these concept models capture the irregularity and centrality of the starfruit. no two points of the fruit have the same radius in respect to the center, niether are they regularly spaced. the unique placement around its core suggests movement. the model incorporates the stages of the fruit’s decomposition by allowing the point location to move and the coloration change through metal oxidation.

radiation. project: artist live/work loft in williamsburg, brooklyn concept: fashion icon, bea szenfeld’s paper shawl was investigated through maquette building to understand its components and the art of its creation. this exercise was the inspiration for a live/work loft for a paper artist. a central octagonal column acts as the core for a series of radiating octagons in an irregular wave pattern.and forms the dropped ceiling that unifies the space.

vetro a rui. project: watercolor painting in venice concept: when studying art materials + techniques and watercolor painting in venice, i became fascinated by the distortion of objects and architecture beyond crown glass windows, an ancient glass making technique. this was my study of these windows in venice and hte beautiful deteriorating materials that surrounded me.

residential redux. project: a material study of copper oxidation led to its use in a multi-generational family residence. concept: a material rich, color saturated, and incredibly stimulating exploration.oxidized copper mesh comprised a heirarchy of spatial divisions. oxidation was lifted from the copper with silk organza and applied to the second floor ceiling. cork cubes, threaded on vertical elastic straps became a balancing and dampening material that playfully allowed privacy control for the inhabitants. copper was used as an accent in the detailing of the ceiling (see ceiling plans below) and on the baseboards as a suggestion of a grid system for the floor plan.

space planning + social design design that benefits communities as a whole is one of my greatest motivations. i believe every person, regardless of situation, is meant to experience beauty in their world. speaking the design language of a community to promote inclusion breaks down intangible barriers and promotes local artists and entrepreneurs.

industry city office. project: industry city office concept: this office project incorporates the latest research in office design, including open office plan with options for docking and privacy. biophilic principles of green space, mystery, prospect, air movement, and maximizing natural lighting are integral to this workplace. they are proven to promote wellness and reduce employee absenteeism collaborative spaces are placed throughout while peripheral circulation and practical programming adjacencies maximize efficiency.

level 2 hosts more food market stalls and educational facilities. level 3 is a community co-op grocery store and the gastro flea offices. level 4 opens up to a pop-up restaurant for incubator members and its rooftop features additional hydroponic shipping container farms.

the shell of this building is preserved in its original state with exposed brick and peeling paint on the ceilings. local street art flanks the walls and its abstraction is used as a wayfinding device for a population who speaks english as a second language. these pictures are found in perforated metal railings as an idicator of what can be found on each level. other levels are visible from the central communicating staircase that is the focus of the main entry.

milo tricot. soho retail. project: retail design for socially responsible online knitwear in sohoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s historic iron district. concept: soho retail project created in revit for milo tricot - a sustainably sourced knitwear line with minimalist sensibilities and a focus on movement and community social engagement. the project employs the latest trends in retail that combine brick and mortar with online sales. it also makes use of the latest research for intentional product placement and a diagonal plan to control circulation.

guest room - preserved plaster walls create a more serene environment than the public spaces downstairs. stages featured here include one for sleeping, storing and bathing. Because more of the stages here are conducive to vertical human positions, a scrim of street art is offset from the ceiling. furniture and fixtures are all made by brooklyn artists and artisans and are for sale.
