Swap Some Candy; Support the Troops Let’s face it—trick-or-treating is fun; cavities are not. Instead of gobbling up all those sweet treats, get your kids to do something even sweeter with their stash. In the annual Halloween Candy Buy Back, dentists “buy back” candy from generous youngsters in exchange for cash, coupons, or other creative currencies. The collected candy is then distributed to military support groups and shipped to service members abroad. To learn more about this wonderful initiative, which is now in its 13th year, go to www.HalloweenCandyBuyBack.com. The participating dentists in Staten Island are: Kids Dental • 4864 Arthur Kill Road • 718-356-5437 Phyllis G. Merlino • 268 Todt Hill Road • 718-761-2090

The Teal Pumpkin Project Halloween can be a different kind of scary for thousands of children on Staten Island with food allergies. The Teal Pumpkin Project is an awareness initiative that will help identify homes and locations that offer safe alternatives for trick-or-treaters with food allergies. To participate, simply paint a pumpkin teal and place it on your porch or download and print a picture of a teal pumpkin as a sign to other families managing food allergies that you have non-food treats available you didn’t really want your kids to eat all at your home. Your teal pumpkin is also a way to raise awareness in your their candy anyway, right? neighborhood about food allergies! The Teal Pumpkin Project is Food Allergy Research and Education’s Halloween Initiative to help raise awareness and provide a way for all children to enjoy Trick-orTreating safely. Go to siparent.com to download a free Teal Pumpkin printable sign. If you don’t have a color printer, have your child color the flyer with a teal crayon or marker. Important School Dates

Falling Back You probably don’t need a reminder to set your clocks back now that the world runs on smart phones and advanced technology. But you could still use a reminder that your schedule is about to be thrown off course. It’s time to “fall back” into the shorter days and longer nights of autumn as we prepare to turn back the clocks next month. Daylight Savings Time ends at 2am on Sunday, November 4, 2018. Enjoy the extra hour of weekend sleep! Unless you have kids, of course.

Staten Island Half Marathon The Staten Island Half Marathon is set for Sunday, October 14 this register now before it’s full! year, just four weeks before the famous New York City Marathon. The race features views of New York Harbor and the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and is suited for runners of all skill level. It’s the final run of the New York Road Runners (NYRR) Five-Borough Series, which holds a different marathon for each borough throughout the course of the year: The United Airlines NYC Half, the Airbnb Brooklyn Half, the NYRR Queens 10K, the New Balance

Now that the 2018-1019 school year is in full swing, it’s time to prepare for what’s to come. The 2019 Middle School Directory is available for download and serves as a resource for fifth grade students who will be graduating elementary school at the end of this school year. To view the Middle School Directory, as as well find

Gifted and Talented resources, middle school applications, information on the high school admissions process and other important information from the Department of Education, bookmark our Public Schools page at siparent.com (on the “Preschools & Schools” tab at the top of the page).

Italian Bred is Back There’s certainly no shortage of crazy families here on Staten Island. That’s probably why Candace Guardino’s one-woman show about her own crazy family sold out last year when she finally brought it home to her native borough. Italian Bred is a firsthand journey through Candice’s life growing up in Staten Island through spot-on impersonations of family members and virtual cameos by celebrities like Sex and the City’s Mario Cantone and Sopranos’ Steve Schirripa. Candace describes it as a “full theatrical experience,” where she sings and entertains the audience by slipping in and out of colorful characters throughout the 85-minute show. The former Woodrow resident and Wagner College graduate will be performing her critically-acclaimed show at the College of Staten Island on Saturday, November 3. You can get your tickets at

The five W’s of Applying for High School

You probably can’t believe it, but the time has come for your baby to apply for high school. Where has the time gone, you ask? We can’t help you there. But we CAN give you a little help with the often-confusing application process. That way you’ll have more time to cry into your child’s old onesies and blankies.

S

o you’re looking at the application, which claims to be offered in at least five different languages, yet even the English version isn’t making much sense.

It says there are over 700 programs in over 400 high schools available to New York City public school students. Where on earth do you begin? We’ve broken down the who, what, where, when, why and how of everything you really need to know.

Who? What? This is the easy part. Is your child a current eighth grader and a resident of New York City? Then he or she is eligible to apply for a NYC public high school for the 2019-2020 (omg, did we just really write 2020???) school year.

16

jeannine hs article.indd 1

When? Dates are important. The deadline to apply is December 3, 3018. If your child doesn’t receive an offer or is unhappy with his offer, then he will have another opportunity to apply (Round 2) in March. The Public High School Fair in Staten Island will be held on October 13-14, 10am-3pm at Port Richmond High School. You can get the scoop on all of the schools in the borough and check out some helpful workshops on high school admissions at 10:15am and 12:30pm. There’s also a workshop on auditioning for arts schools and programs at 11:30am and a workshop on Career and Technical Education at 1:45pm. If your child is planning to apply for any of New York City’s nine Specialized High Schools (except for Fiorello H. LaGuardia

looking ahead High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts), he will need to register for the SHSAT test by October 11, 2018. Students applying for LaGuardia must submit a portfolio and audition to be considered.

Where? Here in Staten Island, there are 11 district high schools with 52 programs available, plus one Specialized High School program. There are over 4,000 seats available to 9th graders on the Island, but you can apply anywhere within the five boroughs. Some programs cater to specific interests and skills while others are more beneficial to students who are new to the country. Thre are programs that focus on creating specific learning environments. As we mentioned earlier (and can’t stress enough) attending open houses is a MUST. How will your child know which schools feels right for her until she is physically standing in the hallway, outside her potential future locker, dreamily picturing the next four years and the many friends she’ll make, teachers she’ll be inspired by, and life

goals she’ll set in motion? So attend as many open houses together as you can. Show up prepared with a list of questions – about everything from courses offered to daily schedules and extracurricular activities – and be ready to write down the answers. Your High School Directory includes a helpful page of questions to ask at an open house. And here’s a tip: Write your contact information very clearly on sign-in sheets, as schools often notice which prospective students have attended their events.

How? This part is tricky, but not quite rocket science. And if you do it right the first time, you have a 97% chance of getting an offer the first time around. By do it right, we mean if you list 12 programs on your application, in your true order of preference. Don’t worry about the schools seeing the order -- they won’t know how high they rank on your list. But the higher you rank a school on your list, the higher the chance you will receive an offer. You should estimate your child’s likelihood of being offered a seat in the schools of interest to him. Some schools extend offers based mostly on zoning, while others screen applicants, taking into consideration seventh grade report card grades and state test scores (however, New York State law prohibits schools from utilizing state test scores as major factors in admissions decisions). Be sure to research your preferred school’s admission’s methods before applying. You should also take note of the number of applicants per seat. For example, 10 applicants per seat indicate the school is in high demand whereas 3-4 applicants per seat indicate a lower demand. On the application, you may see fields marked “reach,” “target,” and “likely.” According to the DOE, “reach” means you are less likely to be offered a spot, “target” means your chances of getting an offer are average, and “likely” points to a higher chance of receiving an offer. Some schools offer priority to applicants based on diversity. High schools that are participating in the diversity initiative will give a certain percentage of applicants in the incoming ninth and tenth grades an admissions priority if they qualify as economically disadvantaged based on federal income guidelines. You can learn more about this at the DOE website (link to it at siparent.com/highschool). Your 2019 High School Directory will include a complete list of New York City schools and programs to which you can apply, along with important information for each. You can also search for schools using the School Finder at schoolfinder. nyc.gov. (Or go to siparent.com/highschool to link directly to both the directory and the School Finder website).

Why? Well, why not? But actually, there are plenty of reasons some parents would rather their children not attend traditional public school. If you fall into this category, you might be interested in charter schools, one of the specialized high schools, a career/technical school or private schools.

What Are Charter Schools?

Charter schools are independent public schools founded by not-forprofit Boards of Trustees. They operate under a contract (or “charter”) of up to five years. Charter schools are New York City public schools and they are open to all New York City students. Many charter schools have unique educational approaches that may include longer school days, a longer school year, or themed programs. Learn how to enroll in charter schools at siparent.com/highschool.

What Are The Specialized High Schools?

The nine specialized high schools offer support to students who excel academically and/or artistically. They are: • The Bronx High School of Science • The Brooklyn Latin School

• Brooklyn Technical High School • HS for Mathematics, Science & Engineering at City College of NY • High School of American Studies at Lehman College • Queens High School for the Sciences at York College • Staten Island Technical High School • Stuyvesant High School • Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art

What About Catholic School?

If you are considering a Catholic high school for your child, there are a variety of coeducational and single-sex schools, many of which offer partnerships with local Catholic colleges and universities. On Staten Island, there are six Catholic High Schools – two are all boys, one is all girls, and three are co-ed. To apply to a Catholic High school, eighth grade students must take an admissions exam called TACHS (Test for Admission into Catholic High Schools). Registration is available online at www.tachsinfo.com until October 15, 2018. Students and parents are invited to visit the facilities and learn more about the programs offered. Fairs and open houses are generally scheduled prior to the TACHS exam date, but if you are unable to attend a one you should contact the school to set up an appointment.

looking ahead What are Career & Technical Schools?

These schools integrate academic study with workforce skills in specific career pathways. They offer students the opportunity to graduate high school with industry-specific competencies, skills, training, and even credentials that can lead to college or entry into the workforce. Through these programs, students have the opportunity to earn Advanced Regents diplomas.

Students with Disabilities

Students with disabilities may apply to all programs and are subject to the same admissions requirements as their peers. They may take the SHSAT and apply for all audition programs, including Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music and Performing Arts. Testing accommodations will be provided during the SHSAT administration as outlined in the student’s IEP. We know it seems like a lot to take in all at once, but try to relax. Take a breather. Go heat up your coffee. Then visit siparent.com/highschool for direct links to everything you need to know about applying to high school and more: a complete list of schools and programs, applications, school fair dates, open house dates, test dates, deadlines, important pages on the Dept. of Education website as well as the Catholic Schools website – and many more resources vital to the high school admission process. feature / lifestyle There are actual important documents in that pile. Things that should be dealt with immediately, or at least put away neatly. Things like unpaid bills. Important school notices. Insurance paperwork. My income taxes. My daughter’s first ever “report card” from preschool. Copies of the magazine in which my own words were literally published in print for the very first time in my life. Like, seriously important stuff. It’s as though everything that is vitally significant to my existence resides within a chaotic stack on my kitchen counter, sandwiched between loose crayons and old Costco catalogues. It’s not like I really have time to clean it. I sometimes distractedly stop what I’m doing and grab one or two things off the top to either toss in the recycling bin or file away somewhere safe. But then I take a second look and think “who am I even kidding?” and give up to stick my head in the fridge to find something to snack on. Sometimes you just have to embrace the chaos

this is how i know i’m failing at adulthood Am I the only one who has that single spot in their home that is a constant, infuriating reminder of how epically they are failing as an adult? For me, that spot is a hopelessly disorganized counter in my kitchen.

When it’s clean (semi-annually), it’s supposed to be where you’ll find kitchen utensil storage and perhaps a place to store a few pieces of new mail. There is a little stack of post-it notes and a pen or two nearby for scrawling messages, like people in tidy homes do for each other when one isn’t home. There’s a calendar hanging up, not buried under a plethora of reminder notices and kids’ homework assignments. It’s an orderly, functional area of the home. Or at least, it’s supposed to be. The thing is, this kitchen counter is more than just a ridiculously cluttered spot in a home that is almost equally disordered. It’s more than an inside-out junk drawer that seemingly threw up on itself. It’s more than a mere representation of my messy personality. It’s like……a symbol of adulthood as I’ve come to know it.

24

october 2018

www.siparent.com

Failing at Adulthood.indd 2

If you were to look at it closely, you would see there isn’t just random junk mail and school art projects strewn carelessly about (though you will find an abundance of those too).

So the stack just grows higher and higher with each passing day, more and more art projects and potentially important documents piled on top on a regular basis. Sometimes I walk by that counter and I’m just like, wow. If being an adult were a class in school I would be seriously flunking out. If growing up were a video game, I would lose one life every time I added another “Final Notice” to top of the mound. If the fate of the entire free world hinged on my ability to be an actual, mature, grown, human being, there would be a crisis of apocalyptic proportions. That kitchen counter represents the apocalypse of my ability to have my stuff together. When you’re young, you have this overly optimistic faith in yourself, this notion that someday you’ll enter adulthood and just automatically grow up. Like it happens overnight or something. Maybe the domestic goddess fairy will sprinkle some fairy dust on your pillow one night and you’ll wake up the next morning as June Cleaver, or at the very least, Monica Gellar. How silly, right? No one ever seems to realize that keeping your life together is hard enough when you only need to care for yourself, but it’s exponentially more difficult when you’re suddenly taking care of others as well. Why did no one ever tell me this??? Here’s a funny thought: I just realized that the time I’ve devoted to writing about my messy kitchen counter could have been spent ACTUALLY CLEANING IT. Oh well! Frank Scerra was confused. The left-fielder for the Mid-Island Little League 12-year-old all-star team couldn’t understand what all the fuss was about. The team had just been honored at Staten Island Borough Hall, and the whirlwind would continue with victory laps offered by the Mets at Citi Field, the Staten Island Yankees at the Richmond County Ballpark, the New York Stock Exchange in Manhattan and Dave and Buster’s in the Staten Island Mall. “Why do we have to keep doing this?” Frank asked his mom innocently. “All we did was play baseball.” And capture the hearts of a city along the way. Indeed, it was a special summer for the boys from Mid-Island, who became the sixth team from Staten Island and third from the Travis league to reach the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Whether it was Gregory Bruno pitching a perfect game in the Regional championship contest or shortstop Steven Martinez hitting over .700 in the Regionals, the boys gave New York — and especially their home borough — plenty of reasons to root, root, root for the home team. But it wasn’t all applause and ESPN interviews for the group. There was a lot of

hard work and sacrifice by the boys and their families leading up to that success. As right-fielder Robert Cavalieri’s dad, Anthony, put it, “You don’t get to Williamsport by accident. It takes a lot of work.” The boys, led by manager Joe Calabrese and coaches Al Bedford and Anthony Ferrante, practiced virtually every day, for several hours a day, rain or shine, while their parents had to figure out how to juggle work schedules and come up with the funds to keep up with it all over the three months the run lasted. Laura Scerra works from home, but many parents — like her husband, Frank, a supervisor at the port of Newark — put a lot of miles on their cars driving back and forth to be at the games. “Frank took his vacation when we were in Bristol, Connecticut, for the regionals,” Laura said, “but drove back and forth once we got to Williamsport.” “Unfortunately, some of the parents had to miss a few games because of work,” said Anthony Cavalieri, a retired firefighter. The final month, once the team reached the Mid-Atlantic regionals, meant “paying for hotels, meals and gas” to follow the team, Cavalieri said “But we’d all do it all over again.”

9/20/18 12:59 PM

The same group of boys went 11-0 to become 11-year-old state champions last summer, so everyone anticipated something special this summer. “We knew not to plan any summer vacations this year,” Cavalieri said. The only thing that could slow Mid-Island this summer was the weather, which pushed the Mid-Atlantic Regionals an extra day and forced the team to board a bus for Williamsport almost immediately after clinching a spot in the World Series. “We had about seven minutes to say goodbye to them,” Scerra said. And that’s when things really got nuts. “The boys were treated like royalty,” Cavalieri said. “It was an amazing feeling seeing your 12-year-old son giving autographs.” His wife, Dawn, added: “The whole thing was overwhelming.” Mid-Island roomed with the team from Japan and enjoyed interacting with their players. “They used their smartphones’ translate apps to understand what they were saying,” Dawn Cavalieri said. “They met people from all over the world.” Mid-Island had the Island’s hopes soaring after winning their first two games in Williamsport, but fell short in two chances to reach the championship game — first to Honolulu Little League from Hawaii, the eventual champion, and then to Peachtree City American from Georgia. Still, the team won 17 of the 19 games it played this summer and received a hero’s welcome when it returned to its Travis complex on Aug. 24, accompanied by a police escort that met its bus at the Goethals Bridge. Mayor Bill de Blasio made an appearance at the league picnic on Sept. 8 to present the team with a proclamation making it Mid-Island Little League Day in New York City. The boys — Bruno, Martinez, Cavalieri, Scerra, Derek Mendez, Thomas Puglisi, Chris Bedford, John Calabrese, Logan Castellano, Chris Cancel and Jayson Hannah — won’t appreciate the magnitude of what they accomplished “until they’re a lot older,” Dawn Cavalieri said. And when the games were through, most agreed, the group went through a sense of withdrawal. “I miss it,” Anthony Cavalieri said, with Dawn adding, “The families were with each other every day. We’re all so close.” “We recently went through a stretch where we didn’t see each other for like five days,” Laura Scerra added. “So we all went to dinner together. We were like, ‘Oh, my God, I miss everybody.’ “The bond,” she added, “will last forever.” So will the memories.

What Kids Really Want at Their

Birthday Parties T

ake it from parents who know: Your kids may say they want a huge birthday party blowout at their favorite local arcade, but what they really want is a celebration that’s far more meaningful—and way less chaotic.

“A birthday is a time to enter your child’s world,” says Julie Morganstern, author of several books, including her latest, Time to Parent: Organizing Your Life to Bring Out the Best in Your Child and You. “All kids want is for someone to see us and to understand us and that’s what I think a birthday celebration is really about.”

Bigger isn’t always better— learn what will make the celebration truly special By Lambeth Hochwald, a New York City-based journalist covering trends, relationships, and life in New York City.

Step Away From the Competition

It’s super easy for birthday parties to become competitive, status-y affairs where parents are one-upping each other over everything from the venue to just how deluxe the goodie bags are, Morganstern warns. “Parents can easily start comparing which party is the biggest or fanciest but it’s important for parents to resist this temptation,” she says. Instead, “you want to establish values and make sure your kids don’t get caught up in all that external pressure to compete,” Moganstern says. “You also want to focus on redefining what the real value is of a birthday party. In my book it’s all about celebrating who you are, it’s connecting with the people you really love and the ones who care most about you. That’s your family and friends. It’s not about impressing anybody. If it’s about competition with other parents then the party isn’t about you, it’s about other people.”

32 Birthday party2.indd 2

In fact, keeping the party smaller and simpler may make a bigger impression on your kid in the long run. “The most memorable experiences are those that incorporate multiple senses, evoke an emotional connection, and incorporate an element of novelty,” says Chrissy Khachane, an educational consultant and parenting coach. “Slowing down a bit to focus on some of life’s simple pleasures—family, good food, and laughter—affords children a party that incorporates the most important parts of childhood.” So this year, instead of getting into a frenzy planning your child’s birthday party, consider tapping into your sense of nostalgia. Plan a day that involves playing tag in the backyard, perhaps, or tossing a ball, gathering on a beach or in the park, or playing board games or old-school Duck, Duck, Goose. And whatever you do, consider taking a few cues from these New York City metro-area parents and experts as they share their take on rethinking our kids’ birthday parties.

Let Your Child Play Party Planner

If your child insists on helping out with the party planning, don’t hesitate to invite him to play an important role—depending on how old he is, of course. “One way you can let your child take the lead is picking out the party theme,” says Amy Horta, owner of AEH Events, a custom event planning and design firm in Westchester County. Horta let her own 3-year-old son have a hand in creating his construction-themed birthday party. “He went with me on a trip to Home Depot (his favorite place!) for décor,” she says. “He also helped paint toolbox favors for all his guests. All of these ways that he helped out made the party extra special for him.”

Exercise Crowd Control

If you have a toddler who doesn’t love big crowds, having a party with lots of guests just won’t be fun for her. In fact, the party could end

up a big disaster for everyone involved, Horta says. “If there are loads of family and friends who want to shower the birthday boy or girl with good wishes, consider inviting family over for cake the weekend before the birthday and then have a small kids’ party the weekend after,” she recommends. “It may be a little more work planning two events, but it helps make sure that the birthday boy or girl don’t get completely overwhelmed on their big day!” Teens, too, may feel that a crowded bash isn’t right for them. Instead, they may prefer to do a special activity with couple of friends in place of a bustling party. “Think indoor rock climbing, a trapeze class, a double feature at the movies—with popcorn—or even a day out in Manhattan,” Horta says. “A birthday celebration doesn’t always have to mean a big party with lots of people, but no matter what, there’s always room for cake with family!”

Gather Somewhere Unique

“We keep our daughter’s birthday parties pretty low key,” says Raakhee Mirchandani Singh, a Hoboken, NJ mom of Satya, 5, and author of the forthcoming kids’ book, Super Satya Saves the Day. “For Satya’s second, third, and fourth birthdays, we’ve had a story time at our local bookstore,” she says. The owner “reads some of Satya’s favorite titles, and some new ones too. And Satya and her friends love it,” Singh says. Instead of receiving goodie bags, “all the kids go home with a book,” Singh adds. “I feel awesome knowing we’re sitting on the floor of a bookstore, with people we love, encouraging the next generation of bookworms!”

Honor Your Kid’s Passions

See a Party as a Way to Build Community

A birthday party should absolutely focus fully on the birthday boy or girl, but it can also serve another purpose, especially if you’re new in town. For Cherie Corso, a Westchester parent expert, blogger, and mom of a 15-year-old daughter, birthday parties through the years have always been wonderful ways to meet other families in town. “My daughter always wanted to invite her whole class so these gatherings were a great way for me to get to know the parents,” Corso says. “Best of all, my daughter has wonderful memories of those gatherings and I got to meet so many other families, too.”

Let Your Kids Have a Say

“When my daughter was seven, we decided to focus her birthday party around her interest in dance,” Morganstern says. “I invited a woman who did dance parties to come and lead the kids in a series of dances. It was so wonderful to watch our daughter share something she loved with her friends and watch as they happily participated in her passion.” Incorporating your child’s interests is a great way to make a party special, Khachane agrees: “Through focusing on something that is important to the birthday girl or boy there is a strong connection that takes the experience beyond what one might find at a [generic] party,” she says.

After Zaida Khaze’s daughters spent their sixth and seventh birthday parties with their close friends, they both announced that for their next birthdays they’d rather go somewhere special all day and night instead of having a party. “With all the money that was spent per party (about $750) for ninety minutes of fun and a goodie bag, I didn’t object,” says Khaze, of Fort Lee, NJ. She says the next year her kids opted for short family trips. “I was really happy about their decision because I saved hundreds of dollars and didn’t have to spend so much time planning,” Khaze says. “I would rather spend that money on their birthday presents. I was very impressed how my kids figured this out on their own.”

Focus on the Love

“Satya just wants to feel loved and celebrated,” Mirchandani says. “I don’t think she cares about the specifics of the venue, the cake, or anything else, for that matter. As for gifts, we’re pretty aggressive in our ‘no gifts’ policy and have been since her first birthday as Satya is a cancer survivor. Our friends bring gift cards to the party that we donate to the Tomorrows Children’s Fund in Hackensack,” she says. “We’ve explained it so many times, she’s totally on board. Truth is, the kid has everything a little girl could want and then some: good health, sneakers that light up, parents who adore her, and more Wonder Woman junk than I ever thought humanly possible. So we encourage her to share with others.” And isn’t that the point of an awesome birthday party after all?

create a homework hot spot Everything You Need to Know

Kids need a dedicated space to get their homework done. But what if the space you’ve carved out for them isn’t so ideal? Read on for some quick and easy fixes.

If it seems like your kids find any excuse not to sit down and do their homework, it could be their workstation is lacking in the right light, the right inspiration, or even the right chair. “As parents, getting our kids to focus on homework can be a daily grind,” says Lisa Sugarman, a nationally syndicated opinion columnist and parenting expert. “But by creating a space that entices our kids to sit down and dig into their work, we’re setting them up for success without anyone kicking and screaming along the way. And that means less stress for us and for our kids.” It’s very important to pick a quiet spot without any distractions like TV, devices of any sort, and toys. “Tell your kids that it’s their spot to do their work,” Sugarman says. “Giving your kids ownership of their homework area is a really big deal to a kid. Next, always make sure to help them get invested in the space by encouraging them to help shop for the

items they’d like and then set it up and get it organized together.” Now that you know why your kids need a dedicated homework station, read on as Annie Draddy, a professional organizer and co-founder of Henry & Higby, a professional organizing company in New York City, shares 10 ways to get your kids to actually sit down and get their work done—plus products that will help enhance their space. We promise that your kids will thank you later! Make the space appealing. Once you’ve carved out a room or space in your home that works for your child and is intended just for homework, make it aesthetically pleasing by adding decorative items such as a colorful accent rug, bookends, and a funky desk lamp that matches their personality. “It doesn’t matter if this spot is in a communal room of the home or a desk in their own room, provided it feels personal to them,” Draddy says. “Ultimately, the goal

to get them to work in a proper set-up with a table and chair instead of doing their homework on the couch. This way they establish good habits and can properly work on their handwriting and other skills.” Desk Pick: Kids Navy Blue Campaign Desk, $399 (crateandbarrel.com) Select a good desk chair. The goal here: to select a desk chair that’s as comfortable as it is supportive. “You don’t want a lousy chair to be the reason that your kids are doing their homework in front of the TV,” Draddy says. Chair Picks: Rockin’ Roller Desk Chair, $149 (pbteen. com) Make it easy to keep a shipshape desk. Although it may seem obvious, keeping a trash or recycling can near your child’s desk is a win-win. “Not only will this encourage him to throw out old papers, but also—perhaps with a little coaxing—purge the garbage from his backpack on a regular basis,” Draddy says. Bonus points if you encourage your child to routinely empty that trash on her own as part of her chores. Trashcan Pick: Pink or Gray Trash Can, $39 (potterybarnkids. com) Post important notices. By hanging up a corkboard for your kids to pin papers, reminders, and a calendar, you’re keeping important information within sight. “This is a space that should be within reach of their desk so they can easily add/remove important items on a regular basis,” Draddy says. “It can also give them a chance to decorate and personalize their space—and maybe even sketch out a dream board, which will hopefully inspire them to keep using it!” Corkboard Pick: Zig Zag Cork Board, $12.99 (containerstore.com)

Keep supplies close at hand. Stowing supplies within reach of your child’s desk is one of the biggest keys to your kid’s productivity. “There needn’t be twelve trips around the house looking for the tools they need to complete each project,” Draddy says. It’s easy: Just keep pens, pencils, erasers, Post-Its, highlighters, three-ring binder paper, graph paper, rulers, and a pencil sharpener within easy reach. “If desk space is an issue, consider making your own mobile supply station that can be easily wheeled in and out of the space when it’s homework time,” she says. “A version of this caddy can also be made for the road if your children won’t always be home when it comes time for homework.” Caddy Pick: Acrylic Accessory Drawers, $12.99-$13.99 (containerstore.com) Embrace your label maker. It’s time to dust off your label maker and use it to help your kids stay organized. “Label everything on your supply

containers/caddy,” Draddy says, adding that this includes recent tests, papers, and assignment sheets as well as bins containing supplies. “This will help teach your children how to maintain their space and hopefully put an end to the continuing cycle of them asking where to put their supplies when they are done with their homework,” Draddy adds. Label Picks: Simply Remarkable Reusable Chalk Labels, $9.95 or Brother P-Touch PTD 210 Easy-to-Use Label Maker, $24.99 (both on amazon.com) Corral those cords. As your kids get older, homework will often require the use of technology, whether that’s a laptop, iPad, or other plug-ins, all of which means cord and charging chaos. “Keep your kids’ homework space tidy from the cord clutter by using some of those ingenious products and hacks to help cables stay neat and handy for when it’s time to plug in and charge,” Draddy says. Cord Storage Pick: Cable Twisters, $9.99 (containerstore. com) Time it right. If assignments need to be timed, give your kids the tools to manage their own time by keeping a clock or timer on their workspace. “Setting time limits for each subject can help them stay on track,” Draddy says. “This is a life skill that will bode them well in life after school, too.” Timer Pick: Time Timer Original 8 Inch, 60 Minute Visual Analog Timer, $24.99 (amazon.com) Encourage color-coding. Color-coded file folders can be vital to keeping organized. Encourage your child to stow all science papers in a green folder, English compositions in their blue folder, French worksheets in a red folder, and so on. “This helps kids keep their notes organized whether on their desk or in their book bag,” Draddy says. Color-Coded File Pick: White, Pool Blue + Aqua Letter Size File Folders, $15 (poppin.com) Behold the power of the in-box. With school comes tons of assignments and papers that need to stay organized. “Consider setting up an ‘in’ and ‘out’ bin where your kids can put assignments that need to be done and others that are already completed,” Draddy says. “This makes it easier to remember that everything in the ‘out’ bin needs to be packed in their backpacks and returned to school the next day.” For papers your kids want to keep for future nostalgia, consider keeping these in bins. By doing this, your house will stay streamlined too. Question: At a recent birthday party, the seventh-graders had fun inhaling helium and talking like cartoon characters. I think this could be very dangerous. My kids disagree. Who is right? – Need to Know

Answer: Just like your children, most people think that inhaling helium is simply harmless fun. However, the National Inhalant Prevention Coalition tells a different story. According to this organization, a person can cut off oxygen supply, or inhale so deeply that it causes an embolism, or the pressurized gas from tanks can literally cause lungs to rupture. Unfortunately, parents are providing helium at parties, and science teachers are even using it in class to demonstrate the effects of a gas on vocal cords. And some adolescents are using helium as a recreational drug. It is unclear whether the users get an actual “high” from inhaling it, or if it’s simply a feeling of lightheadedness from lack of oxygen. Please have your own children and party providers of helium as well as teachers visit inhalants.org, inhalants. drugabuse.gov and theantidrug.com to get solid information on the real dangers of inhalants, including helium.

Question: Recently, my daughter in middle school has been getting bullied online. The

people who are bullying her are classmates. They say she only gets good grades because she is a teacher’s pet. What can she do? What can I do? – Worried Mom

Answer: You definitely need to be aggressive in fighting these bullies. You need to report what is happening to the social media site or sites where the messages are coming from. After receiving a report, most social media sites will block their email address with your email provider and block their number from being able to send your child text messages. You should also contact the appropriate person at your child’s school. The school needs to be aware that cyberbullying is occurring and deal appropriately with the cyberbullies. You should also check the laws in your state against cyber harassment. There is a lot of information out there to help you to know what to do, and the people mentioned above will provide you lots of information to get started. Make sure that your daughter knows to never, never respond to a message, text or post that contains bullying remarks. Doing so usually only makes the situation worse and is providing the reaction cyberbullies want. However, you might want to reply once telling the sender that this has been reported and make sure that you do the reporting. You can also change your child’s email address. Make sure that you keep a record of all the bullying messages. If you are unable to print out a message, you

9/20/18 3:27 PM

should take a screen shot. You will definitely need all this information to back up your words if you need to pursue a criminal or civil lawsuit. Remember that often the child being cyberbullied is also being bullied in school. You need to make sure that your child knows how much you love and support her and are willing to help her.

Question: My second-grader’s reading is very choppy and slow, as she reads each word one at a time. What can I do to help her break this habit? – For Better Reading

Answer: Word-by-word reading tends to occur when children have to spend too much time figuring out what each word is. It also can happen when children have gotten in the habit of pointing at each word when they read it in order not to lose their place in a sentence. The first disadvantage of word-by-word reading is that it significantly slows down the rate at which children read. The second and more important result of word-by-word reading is that it definitely interferes with comprehension. One thing that parents can do to lessen word-by-word reading is to force children to read words in groups rather than isolation. To do this, they must work with material that the child can read quite easily. First, the parent should read the material exaggerating how the words should be grouped. Then the child and parent can read the material together several times before the child attempts to read it alone. If the parent reads louder than the child, they will group the words in the same way. Just five minutes a day of this type of practice should result in improvement. Another way for children to learn to read groups of phrases is for the parent to make flashcards with short, easy phrases on them. A blank card should be put in front of a flashcard and then slid so the child can only see the flashcard for a second.

Question: My daughter and a number of her just-newly-teenage friends have become hooked on reading and writing fan fiction. I am glad that she is doing all this reading and writing. Yet, I wonder if this is truly an appropriate online activity? – Wondering

Answer: Many readers might not even know what fan fiction (also known as “fan fic”) is. Fan fiction is an original story that people write that borrows characters, plot elements and settings from other works (movies, TV shows, novels, etc.). It is extremely popular, especially with teenage girls. There are many good points to fan fiction, as it definitely encourages reading and writing. It also can encourage children to think more deeply about the construction of a story and its characters. A few fan-fiction writers have even become published in e-books. On the other hand, fan-fiction works vary immensely in their appropriateness for children to read. Some have racy language and graphic descriptions of sex, drugs or violence. Plus, others will be poorly written with a great number of spelling and grammatical errors. And comments about individual stories from followers could be cruel and actually become cyberbullying. Since your daughter has entered the fan-fiction world, you will need to become acquainted with it. Find out what platforms your daughter is using. Each one will have its own rules and privacy settings. Find out with whom she is sharing her work. Starting out with a small audience and stricter privacy settings is best. You will definitely need to talk with her about writing and sharing sexy stuff, as she could draw the wrong type of readers and even damage her reputation with friends. After learning about the apps and sites that your daughter is using, you may decide that she can or can’t read and write fan fiction. If you approve, do express your concerns and set up some ground rules. On commonsensemedia.org, you can find descriptions of some apps and sites for fan fiction. This can be helpful for learning about the content of a range of fan-fiction content.

New Leadership for our Staten Island Public Schools The 2018 – 2019 school year is in full swing on Staten island with some notable leadership changes. NYC Schools Chancellor, Richard Carranza, has realigned Department of Education leadership, appointing nine executive superintendents across the city. The changes include a new Staten Island executive superintendent, district superintendent and five principals. Executive Superintendent Anthony Lodico began his professional career as an English and Drama teacher at Port Richmond High School. He later served as assistant principal of Port Richmond High School, principal of Edward R. Murrow High School in Brooklyn, and superintendent of high schools in the Bronx and Manhattan. He has been superintendent for District 31 and Staten Island high schools since 2014, where he oversees 69 schools and three pre-k centers. Superintendent Mrs. Vincenza Gallassio has 31 years of experience with the DOE. She has served as a Principal Leadership Facilitator (PLF) for the past three years in District 31. She was a principal for eleven years at PS 16 in Tompkinsville. As the principal of PS 16, she moved the school from the State designation of Restructure to its current state of Good Standing. Under her leadership, the school showed progress in both the State ELA and Math in the subgroup of Lowest Performing Students. Interim Acting Principals: P.O. Rocco Laurie IS 72 - Jessica Jackson started her career 17 years ago as an English teacher at I.S 75 where she later became literacy coach, then AP of English and Special Education. She spent 15 years as a middle school educator. She has spent the past two years as a TDEC for the superintendent’s office supporting principals and assistant principals around the Danielson Framework for teaching. She has also been facilitating the roll out of Impact Teams in District 31 as well as contributing to many of the other initiatives and professional learning. Port Richmond HS - Andrew Greenfield has lived and worked on Staten Island for most of his life. In 1993 Andrew began his career in education teaching

social studies and serving as Dean of Students at Fort Hamilton High School. In 2001, Andrew returned to his alma mater, Port Richmond High School, where for 17 years he served as Assistant Principal of Administration supervising all the administrative tasks of the school, including budget, personnel, facilities, safety and security. Throughout his 25-year career, Andrew has dedicated his time in helping at-risk teens and their families to improving their lives. Public School 78 - Jodi Contento started as a classroom teacher in 2001 in District 20. She joined the PS 78 team the year the school was founded. She distinguished herself as an instructional leader and served as an instructional coach in her second year at the school. She became an assistant principal in 2014. She has led the work of impact teams and has ensured that community partnerships and teacher leadership correlate directly with the social emotional wellbeing of students. Dreyfus Intermediate School 49 - Lou Bruschi was the Founding Principal of Public School 78. The school has moved forward steadily in significant performance measures. Under his leadership the school attained the designation as a Community Learning School by the United Federation of Teachers followed by the additional designation of a Department of Education Community School. Mr. Bruschi has consistently ensured that community partners are the fabric of school. Prior to his principalship at PS 78, Mr. Bruschi worked in the Office of School Improvement serving as a School Improvement Liaison and then director. He started his career in District 21 as a teacher and then assistant principal in District 20. Future Leaders Elementary School 74 - Hanin Hasweh has been an educator with the NYC Department of Education for 13 years. She started her career in Brooklyn, NY and became a founding teacher in 2010 when Future Leaders Elementary School opened as a new school. She continued to serve the learning community as a Math Coach and then as the first Assistant Principal. She will lead the school community as the acting principal for the 2018-2019 school year.

Opportunities for Parents and Families to Get Involved Parent Teacher Associations (PTA)- Meetings: Every public school and most private schools have some form of a Parent Organization that hosts monthly meetings and other activities. The monthly meetings provide an opportunity for families to stay informed about events and programs at the school. Committees: Parents can join a PTA committee to participate in putting together activities like fundraising, grant writing, carnivals, fairs and other events to support the school community. School Leadership Teams (SLT) - Each NYC Public School has an SLT that is comprised of an equal number of Parents and staff. The SLT is a shared decision making entity that develops the Comprehensive Education Plan (CEP) for the school. The SLT meets at least once a month and all school community members are welcome to attend and observe the meetings.

Learning Leaders - Learning Leaders provides an opportunity for parents to volunteer to help provide individualized instructional and other school based support. The program “Empowers parents to foster their children’s educational development.” Please contact your school’s Parent Coordinator if you are interested in becoming a Learning Leader. Classroom Observation Opportunities - Throughout the year in many NYC Public Schools there are presentations and activities where families are invited into the classroom to see the students work first hand. Teachers and Parent Coordinators usually send emails or notes back-packed home with dates and times. Parent/Teacher conferences - Throughout the year there are set dates and times for parents to meet with their child’s teacher. These meetings provide an opportunity to discuss your student’s progress and develop strategies to support them. Curriculum Workshops and Presentations - Many public schools host parent workshops about curriculum in an effort to provide support for parents and families to help their students at home. Please contact your school’s Parent Coordinator to see if these events are scheduled at your child’s school. District Level Involvement - Attend Community Education Council 31 meetings to hear updates from our District Superintendent about events and programs in our Staten Island public schools. The meetings are held at the Michael J. Petrides Complex on the first Monday of each month. The meetings are open to the public and there is an opportunity for public comment. Visit www.cec31.org for additional information. Citywide Involvement - The NYC DOE Panel for Educational Policy (PEP) is the board that oversees the NYC Public School system. The board is comprised of mayoral and borough president appointees. The PEP votes on contracts, and establishes system-wide policies. The Chancellor is a non-voting member of the PEP and is present at all the meetings. The PEP meetings happen monthly and rotate across the 5 boroughs. The public has an opportunity to comment at PEP meetings.
