Welcome back to the chaos...comedy

Hello and welcome to the second Rik Mayall Comedy Festival, the spiritual home of alternative comedy.

Following last year’s success, we’re back and, like Rik, couldn’t resist going bigger. We’ve grown from 8 days to 9, with over 300 performances across Droitwich Spa. It’s a mix of big names, rising stars, and first-timers.

Everything leads back to the Norbury Theatre, where Rik first caught the bug, and where this year’s line-up brings together alternative comedy legends and a whole bunch of future legends. We’ve even taken over St Andrew’s Hotel to fit in more headliners. Across the town, shows are popping up in pubs, cafés, canal boats, and anywhere that will have us.

We’re really honoured to have top photographer, Andy Hollingworth, back to curate a Young Ones-themed exhibition at the Norbury, alongside a brand new Comic Strip Photography exhibition from the late Trevor Rogers as part of our Merch Store and Festival HQ in St Andrew’s Square.

A key remit of the festival is supporting young performers. Alongside the Norbury Beginners on Stage and Youth groups, we’re proud to support our very own young ones with a Youth Showcase on Saturday 6 June. We’re also working with BBC Upload to open doors for new comedians, and partnering with The UK Kids Comedy Festival to present The Joke Spot.

One surprise last year was how many people stayed for the whole week. So this year there’s more happening during the day too: the FlashHeart Club at the Old Cock, outdoor stages, family shows, and plenty to stumble across between gigs.

A message from our patron

It’s good to be back at Rik’s Festival. I was very impressed last year, not just by the scale of it, but by the atmosphere. It was wonderful, and Rik would have loved it. The Norbury Theatre, which is at the centre of the festival, is the place where Rik first learned to show off. Apparently, he squeezed into the lighting box as a boy and operated the follow spot, no doubt believing that it was he who should be lit up on that stage.

Rik’s act as an angry poet was hysterical. He would start reading an awful poem and get cross if anyone laughed, which they all did. And the more upset Rik got, the more they laughed, with Rik almost in tears shouting, “SHUT UP!”

Rik and I worked on so many Comic Strip films, including Fistful of Travellers Cheques, Four Men in a Car, The Strike, Mr Jolly, and of course Bad News, which started as a spoof documentary and spiralled into something far more serious when we played to seventy thousand heavy metal fans at the Monsters of Rock Festival, along with Motörhead and Ozzy Osbourne.

What was most exciting, though, was how the festival had spread throughout the town, with comedy being staged in the most unlikely places, like a canal boat, a barbershop, cellars, front rooms, and funeral parlours* rocking with laughter (and some crying, perhaps). There was so much fun in Droitwich that week. This year, with the amount of talent arriving in town, it’s going to be huge.

Rik, Ade, Nigel, myself, and Alexei formed The Comic Strip back in 1980 and continued working together and apart for 30-odd years, creating comedy on film, TV, and live on stage, and still remained friends.

I think we knew what a special bunch we were. The five of us were the best of the Comedy Store, which functioned one night a week. Rik and Alexei were the first big stars, with their faces on the front page of Melody Maker, The Face, and Time Out.

Then we went on tour and made an album. It was wonderfully exhausting, and I think Rik enjoyed every moment.

Everyone loved that Rik was an unrelenting scene-stealer and happy to do anything to raise a laugh. His energy was always at full volume, which is why he is still so popular today.

Apparently, there’s some great new talent arriving at the festival this year, which is exciting. And they’ll have to go some way to match the great Rik Mayall.

Flashheart Club Fan Zone

Located in the back room of the Old Cock Inn, ‘The Flashheart Club’ is a new addition to the 2026 festival; a ‘fan zone’ run by fans of Rik for fans of Rik.

‘The Flashheart Club’ will have daytime screenings, quizzes, games, photo opportunities and a place to meet with other fans and chat about all things Rik.

ACCESSIBILITY AND INCLUSIVITY

The Rik Mayall Comedy Festival team is committed to improving Accessibility and Inclusivity for participants, volunteers and visitors. It is important that everyone feels welcome and safe at the festival. We aim to do this by:

● Clear information on venue accessibility in the programme and on the website

● A dedicated space for visitors who would like some peace and quiet if they feel overwhelmed during the festival. St. Andrews Church (on the corner of the High Street and St. Andrews Street) will be open most days during the festival from 9am – 6pm, (apart from Sunday 31st May and the morning of Wednesday 3rd June.)

● Providing age guidance for the events to help visitors select those that are suitable for children and young people.

● Identifying ‘family friendly events’ that are ideal for families (subject to the age guidance). Look out for the logo in the programme and on the website.

● Providing a British Sign Language (BSL) Interpreter for a small selection of events. These are identified by the BSL logo.
