Welcome to the joint December and January issue of Completely Bromsgrove

A

s we come to the end of another year, I would like to reflect on a few key events.

King Charles III’s Coronation took place on May 6th and Bromsgrove certainly had a rocking good time joining in the nationwide celebrations. In the June issue we featured Douglas and Malcolm Clark, who celebrated 60 years of entrepreneurship in Bromsgrove. Among the community groups who appeared in the July/August issue were Bentley Pauncefoot WI, who are still going strong after 60 years. Another outstanding achievement in 2024 was by the amazing Queen B’s, who bared all for Primrose Hospice to create a Calendar Girls’ style calendar. All proceeds are going directly to the hospice and to date a staggering £32,000 has been raised.

Coming right up to date, in this issue we would like to congratulate Butchers Block who have once again won the best independent category at the Birmingham Awards. Congratulations ladies and keep up the great work! And as we approach the season of goodwill, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a wonderful Christmas. The team at Completely Bromsgrove would like to thank our advertisers, contributors, and readers for their continued support. Remember folks, keep it local! Best wishes Michele Ford

Button Art Heritage Project T

he Bromsgrove Society is working with Laura Brodrick from Think Big Picture to deliver an art and heritage project celebrating the Sanders family and the Button Factory. Benjamin Sanders moved his button manufactory from Birmingham to premises at the rear of the High Street in Bromsgrove in 1821. Five years later he relocated the business to the former Sidemoor Mill where Button Drive is today off Willow Road. Benjamin Sanders’ patent for a new method of attaching the shank to cloth covered buttons bought him and his family wealth. After his death, his descendants carried on the business before handing over its management to the Nicholls family who continued to trade as B. Sanders and Sons. The building suffered a serious fire in 1915. Work was soon resumed in temporary premises off the High Street and a scheme was organised to find alternative work for some of the women before the factory fully re-opened. The original button factory site in Windsor Street was occupied for many years by the pottery company Daub and Wattle. It is currently being renovated by its owner. A mosaic-style piece of art is being created using buttons to celebrate the history of the industry in Bromsgrove and the legacy of Benjamin Sanders and his family. Residents have been taking part in the project and contributing towards the community artwork. The first workshops were held at Bromsgrove Library and the Creative Art Showcase in late October. Participants glued buttons onto a piece of wood. “Bromsgrove Men in Sheds” community group are building the structure to complete the coffee table, with the button art as the table top. The finished piece will be housed at Bromsgrove Library. The project is funded and supported by the Cultural Compact for North East Worcestershire and Bromsgrove District Council. Pat Tansell is leading the project. She said “As a part of the project we have been collecting memories from people with family associations with the Button Factory. It has been wonderful to hear stories about the people who worked there and to better understand their working practices. Badges were later introduced to the business, so we have also found out more about the outworkers who put pins into badges on piecework. Thank you to everyone who has taken part in the workshops or have been in touch with their stories.” A final workshop will be held on Thursday 14th December from 10am until midday at the Duke of York pub in Sidemoor. Many workers lived in Sidemoor so it’s the perfect location to conclude the art project and collect more memories. All are welcome to attend the free workshop or send memories by email to info@bsoc.co.uk. The story of the project and people will be collated and put on the Bromsgrove Society’s website.

Labour campaigns for Bromsgrove residents C

ommunity shops - With residents struggling with the cost-of-living crisis it is more important than ever that community shops are available in Bromsgrove for residents both in and out of work. Community shops help relieve pressure on the family budget through access to cheaper food, powered by surpluses donated by local supermarkets and residents. There are various models for managing a community shop with the majority in the UK managed and run directly by residents and a combination of paid staff and volunteers. The local Labour Party has cross-party support to carry out a task force that will be looking into and scrutinising community shops, larders, and foodbanks and in doing so highlighting areas that have no such support. The findings and recommendations will then be presented to the cabinet for action. Reinstatement of the 144 bus service - With the 144 bus only travelling to Catshill, residents no longer have a direct route to Birmingham city centre. In some cases, they now need to catch three buses making it difficult to visit friends and relatives and do their shopping. Some people rely on friends or pay for taxis. The Labour Group on the district council have gained the support of other parties in lobbying for the reinstatement of the 144 route. Vaping concerns - Vapes came along as the answer to weaning off smoking but the opposite is happening by catching people at a young age with some vaping companies and sellers targeting children. There is a

8 Completely Bromsgrove

growing concern of a vaping epidemic among children as young as 11 with brightly coloured and branded vapes in shops with flavours the same as sweets and popular fizzy drinks. There is no doubt vaping as a tool to help smokers quit can be maintained, but more should be done on education, enforcement, and regulations to keep them out of the reach of children. The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health has warned that e-cigarettes ‘are not a risk-free product and can be just as addictive, if not more so, than traditional cigarettes’. The Labour Group was successful in calling for crossparty support in lobbying the Government to bring in legislation that would protect our children. Improving the governance of the council - The Labour Party was at the heart of gaining cross-party support to make the council more democratic. Scrutiny committees and boards now have to be chaired by members of the opposition meaning that the controlling group of the council can no longer scrutinise itself. In addition, the cabinet will be made up of those other than in the controlling political party. This should lead to more cross-party collaboration and less political fighting, which should benefit the residents of Bromsgrove.

Fingers Crossed for St John’s Spire Appeal F

riends of St John’s have submitted an application to the National Lottery Heritage Fund for the Spire Appeal project, and the local community are getting behind the bid by crossing their fingers. The project is estimated to cost £360,000 plus vat, this will replace the top of the spire, which has cracked due to the ancient metal stabilising rod rusting. The funding will also be used to better tell the story of the church through information panels and activities. Find out more at www.facebook.com/FriendsStJohnsBromsgrove

Hard-working CAB team

celebrate helping households

A

s part of the recent Citizens Advice Bromsgrove & Redditch team meeting, staff and volunteers celebrated the success of the charity’s work over the past year and the long service of many colleagues. Seventeen staff and volunteers had completed five years’ service, ten had completed ten years and five had given over 15 years. The latter group includes volunteer treasurer, Gordon Cooper, who has served in various roles on the trustee board, for an incredible 28 years. Against a background of significantly increased demand, the service has helped 8,283 households, an increase of over 20% on last year. Unsurprisingly many of these queries concerned money. They have helped manage almost £2,200,000 of debt, an increase of 107% in a year, and helped secure over half a million pounds in financial gains for clients, all money that helps to support the local economy.

12 Completely Bromsgrove

The CAB service, while receiving significant financial suppor t from the local authorities, is an independent charity reliant on grants and donations. The service is free, confidential, independent, and impar tial. The volunteers who deliver so much of the service in Bromsgrove and Redditch have given over 12,500 hours between them in the last year and the CAB is always looking for new people to join the team. If you have a hear t to help others, want to make a difference and are looking for a rewarding role then CAB may be the charity for you. Feel free to contact them for an informal chat by emailing training@cabr. org.uk

Court Leet Autumn Meeting takes place A

s is traditional, members of the Court Leet gathered for the Great Autumn Court meeting in early November to elect the Officers of the Court for the ensuing year.

The last event in the previous Bailiff ’s year, and the first in the new Bailiff ’s year, the Court met in Cookes Room at Bromsgrove School to conduct its business. Also in attendance were guests from the neighbouring Cour ts Leet of Alcester, Henley and Warwick. Everyone assembled in the Old Chapel before the meeting for a group photo. At the Cour t two new members of the Jury were elected. Rod Laight, immediate past Chairman of Bromsgrove District Council who takes up the role of Searcher and Sealer of Leather and Rober t Pryde who will be the Carniter, responsible for sampling meat and fish.

supported during his year in office, and that the year ahead would be about tradition and fun. Former Tythingman Mark Robinson, who entered the Court as Juryman and Brooklooker, was elected to the position of Reeve. He said he would give the Bailiff his full support during the year and was looking forward to attending events at the neighbouring Courts Leet. Follow the Bromsgrove Cour t Leet on www.facebook.com/CourtLeetBromsgrove

Retiring Bailiff Robert Bird thanked the Court for supporting his year which he said had been both challenging and entertaining. He had enjoyed Fair Day, and thanked the Council for their help with the road closure and said it had been his privilege to open the excellent Coronation Celebrations in the High Street. To conclude his duty, the Bailiff presented Ealdorman Roger Weaver with a bottle of wine, the label of which had been replaced by a photo from the Autumn Cour t of 1973. Ealdorman Weaver had been elected to the position of Bailiff in 1973, 50 years ago. The Bailiff said it was an anniversary which had to be marked and thanked Mr Weaver for his many years of commitment to the Court. Members of the Court elected Philip Thomas as Bailiff for the ensuing year. The Lord of the Manor presented him with the robe and chain of office before he took an oath to the King and the Court. The newly elected Bailiff thanked the members for entrusting him with the responsibility. He said he felt humbled to be part of the long history of the Court. He announced that Avoncroft Museum, St John’s Spire Appeal and the Court Leet’s Archiving Project would be the charities

Some progress made but much more to achieve

www.bromsgroverail.org.uk

T

his is the last Rail Affairs article for 2023 and perhaps it is time to reflect on what BARRUP has tried to achieve this year.

The major success has been joining with more than 700,000 people all over the UK, including Bromsgrove District Council, to ensure that ticket offices, including that at Bromsgrove station, will remain open, cer tainly until after the forthcoming General Election. After then, we will need to keep a watchful eye on the machinations of the Department of Transport, the Treasury and West Midlands Rail, as they do their utmost to ignore the wishes of the travelling public and what the market is telling them and come back for another bite at the closure cherry. The phrase “knowing the cost of everything and the value of nothing” represents their views. What we have in Bromsgrove at the station is an invaluable resource for both the town and district which needs more investment and the potential of which in growing the local economy, improving people’s ability to travel to, around, and from Bromsgrove, while benefiting the environment, is unrealised. We currently have trains calling at Bromsgrove which can take you from Hereford in the south

16 Completely Bromsgrove

to Lichfield in the nor th, calling at Worcester and Birmingham en route, with new rolling stock having been introduced in the autumn on the Hereford to New Street services. New rolling stock is due to be introduced on the Cross City Services in late 2024. We also have six bus services which connect the railway station to the town centre and then to other districts in Nor th Worcestershire. BARRUP has proposed to the district council that a cross par ty working group is set up to work towards the improvement of both the facilities at, and the rail and bus connectivity of, the station. We look forward to hearing from it with a positive response, as surely it is not a par ty political matter. Above all, the major prize which BARRUP is striving to win in 2024 is for Cross Country Trains to stop once again at Bromsgrove, enabling people to travel directly to and from Worcestershire Parkway and Cheltenham, and then onwards. What a benefit just an hourly service would have on so many aspects of residents’ lives and the local economy!

GARDENING

Perky poinsettia isn’t

just for Christmas

I

n the plant world Christmas is all about the poinsettia. They start to appear in our shops around late November.

As lovely as they are, I feel they get a rough deal after the festivities have died down and will almost always end up in the bin. With a little care and attention, it’s possible to keep your poinsettia alive throughout the year and even encourage the coloured leaves and flowers to form in time for the following Christmas. They make very attractive house plants with their dark green leaves and red, orange, pink or white ‘bracts’ that surround the pale flowers during December and January. The bracts are often mistaken for flower petals but are actually leaves; the colours are created by subjecting the plant to periods of darkness for six to eight weeks in a row. To achieve the brightest colour, the plants also require abundant light during the day so position your stunning plant in a nice, warm sunny window, free from draft. After Christmas, the plant will need to maintain a warm daytime temperature, going slightly cooler at night to avoid leaf drop. Water as normal until early spring, then gradually start to allow the plant to dry

out. If it starts to become leggy, cut the stems back to about 10 cm and repot in a larger container. Water thoroughly and then put the plant back on a sunny windowsill; check regularly to ensure it doesn’t dry out too much. When you start to see signs of growth, feed your poinsettia every couple of weeks with a general houseplant fertiliser. Continue watering and fertilising the plant as usual. Shape as needed in midsummer, pinching out the end growth from each stem. Poinsettias require short days to bloom and form those colorful bracts we love so much in time for Christmas. Keep your poinsettia in complete darkness for about 12-14 hours a day from early October for approximately an eight to ten week period, usually in a cupboard or by covering it with a box. Return the plant to the sunny window during the remainder of the day. After this time, you can stop the dark period altogether and reduce water and fertiliser. By Christmas, your blooming poinsettia will be the centerpiece of your celebrations.

Jobs to keep you busy in December and January Prune acers, birches, and vines before Christmas to avoid bleeding. Harvest leeks, parsnips, winter cabbage, sprouts, and remaining root crops. Trees and shrubs can still be planted while the ground is still warm. Reduce watering of houseplants. Plants can be protected from cold, wet weather by wrapping with hor ticultural fleece.

18 Completely Bromsgrove

Keep containers in dry, sheltered areas, grouped together for mutual protection. Prevent roots freezing in containers by wrapping with bubble polythene or straw. Check stored bulbs and corms regularly for signs of rot. Order seed catalogues. Eat, drink and be merry, and take time to enjoy the vibrancy of your poinsettia.

Festive robins Is there a species of wildlife that’s more Christmassy than a rockin’ robin? A festive association was born when robins gave their name to the Victorian posties who wore bright red uniforms as they delivered Christmas cards and other postal delights. Perhaps, however, the association is as much to do with these recognisable birds being so obvious at this time of year ; they’re one of few birds to sing during winter and, even more unusually, both males and females sing. Not only do their bright red breasts make them stand out against evergreen shrubs or leaf-less trees but their tuneful songs bring them to our attention too. Most of us with gardens, allotments, patios and even balconies have ‘our’ robin; just the one that pops along to see us every day. Recent studies into the behaviour of garden birds, however, are turning this on its head. Just because you only see one at a time doesn’t mean that there is only one robin (or a pair) in the vicinity. A study of blackbirds in Norfolk, for example, tracked blackbirds in village gardens; it showed that 74 blackbirds visited one garden in just one day. The garden owner had assumed that they were seeing a handful at most! One reason we might not see more than one robin at a time is that they’re very territorial. It’s partly why they sing through winter ; they’re hoping to maintain their territory as best they can. Whilst territories that provide plenty of food to raise the little ones in spring and summer are vital, they’re also impor tant through winter to ensure that adult birds can survive the cold winter nights. It might surprise you to know that the robins you see in your area during winter might not be entirely Photo: Julie Hunt

20 Completely Bromsgrove

the same ones that you see in summer. Our UK robins are fairly sedentary but autumn and winter see an influx of robins from Scandinavia, escaping the harsh winters seen on the other side of the North Sea. On average, robins live for just two years but the oldest recorded was over eight years old. Cold winters, predators, food shor tages and diseases take their toll but we can give them, and their feathered friends, a helping hand. If you’ve got a creeper growing up a wall, perhaps you could ask Santa for a robin box – hide it amongst the new growth in spring to provide a sheltered spot to raise a family. If you’ve not got room for a box, maybe you could pop out some food – take a look at www. worcswildlifetrust.co.uk/actions/how-feed-birds-yourgarden for what’s good and what’s not so good to feed our garden birds. Recycle your Christmas tree without leaving your home D

id you realise that 250 tonnes of real Christmas trees are sadly thrown into landfill every year?

Make a sustainable change by getting your tree collected by Primrose Hospice & Family Support Centre. You’ll not only be helping to save our environment you’ll also be helping your local hospice to support more patients and families in 2024.

“Without that care, a lot of patients and families wouldn’t have that vital support that becomes a lifeline for them. That includes not only the physical support, but also the emotional and psychological support that the hospice gives the families.”

The ‘Primrose Elves’ will be taking to the streets on January 7th and 8th to dispose of your trees by environmentally recycling them at Primrose Hospice in Aston Fields with the help of Treemendus.

Primrose Hospice can take away the hassle of your first job of 2024 by recycling your Christmas tree in return for a small donation. Collections will be made in: B60, B61, B80, B96, B97, B98, B45, WR9, Alvechurch, Feckenham and Inkberrow.

Bromsgrove-based egg products producer Bumblehole Foods has been a huge supporter of Primrose Hospice, especially since one of their employees, Andy, sadly died earlier this year. Andy and his family were cared for by the clinical support and family support team. Bumblehole Foods, who are once again sponsoring Treecycle, said: “From visiting Primrose Hospice, we are aware of the lack of funding the hospice gets from the Government and how important the care is for the community.

4x4 refinement

I

n today’s chequered chess board of confusion that is the 4x4 market, it’s easy to get bushwhacked by the brandished blandishments of all those competing brands. Everyone seems to have ‘the one’ for one’s needs - but one brand you can depend on has to be Subaru.

And in the all-new sixth generation, most technically advanced and safest Outback, the opposition has been set back by quite a few dusty miles - for this Subaru, with its permanent symmetrical all-wheel-drive, is proof against anything any rough terrain can throw at it. If ever a vehicle provided a pick-me-up dash of zesty promise, it’s this ‘go-get-’em buddy’ of 4x4 refinement.

It takes you out and gets you back regardless of what the weather and pothole-blasted highways throw at it. All the time you sit high and dry, replete in the knowledge that it cannot be bettered in the context of the parameters it so radically defines. In short, others might come close, but the Outback shows them a clean pair of heels every time.

I loved the looks, versatility, roominess, load carrying capacity and confidence inspiring solidity of build and Hop into this terrain-tackling beauty and you’ll purpose that in my opinion makes products from the be able to face any challenge from crowded cullikes of Peugeot, Vauxhall, Citroen and Fiat seem flimsy. de-sac to extensive country estate, exer ting as it It’s Rambo with a touch of the Arnolds thrown in for does, an understated mastery of all it surveys. DRIVE TIME

with attitude!

Even the 166 PS 2.5 litre horizontally opposed ‘boxer’ petrol engine is tough. Very smooth and pulling like a train it is linked to Subaru’s brilliant four wheel drive system via the excellent 8 speed CVT Lineartronic transmission - controlled manually or left as automatic. You can do 120 mph if you want and overall you should get around 35/40 mpg. Star quality comes at a price of £42,490 OTR for this Subaru with its space, pace, practicality, and refinement. Electrically powered and heated seats are standard but more interestingly the ‘Eyesight’ driver assist technology watches you with a beady eye, picks up on driver fatigue and makes boingy noises to snap you back to alertness. For your delight there is, of course, a top quality infotainment system via the large touchscreen. Big and roomy, it’s well appointed. Put simply, it’s luxurious. There’s storage aplenty too and should you fill it to the brim you have roof rails for even more carrying power. For odds and ends there are more pouches than you’ll find in a herd of kangaroos and

each one is as capacious as those your correspondent wears beneath his eyes. Crammed full of survival serum for today’s travel, the Outback won’t put your back out with its exceedingly comfy seats and without a doubt it will guarantee a ‘G’day’ to all. Behind the wheel you soon settle, and the range of seat and wheel adjustment is such that anyone from a Neanderthal to a gnome can tailor a good fit. Riding and handling surprisingly well - thanks in part to the fantastic flat four engine which contributes to the low centre of gravity - you flow smoothly through bends at a pace that would have other cars of similar size wallowing. With a 5 star NCAP rating you’re always safe, of course, because there are plenty of airbags to save you. Beyond the ordinary, this Subaru guarantees swift and versatile transportation. If you’re looking for a 4x4 estate that says ‘old money’, is not brash and offers real class - get on the right side of an by Syd Taylor Outback and you won’t look back.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

Therapeutic myrrh has many healing qualities M

yrrh is a resin produced by a small, tough, scraggly tree (Commiphora Myrrha or Commiphora Moimol Tree) that grows in the semi-desert regions of North Africa and the Red Sea. It is closely related to frankincense. Myrrh is the Arabic word for bitter, and it is considered as a wound healer because of its strong antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. In Chinese it is known as Mo Yao and has been used for centuries to treat wounds, bruises, and bleeding and to relieve painful swelling. The Egyptians made myrrh famous in Biblical times, having acquired it around the 15th century BC from Africa where Commiphora trees were abundant. They used it in incense, perfumes, and holy ointments and it is recorded in the Ebers Papyrus for its medical properties. It was also used as an embalming material, for mummification. Myrrh was one of the burial spices of Jesus (John 19:39). Nicodemus ordered 100lb of myrrh and aloe to anoint Jesus’s body, which was a custom by the Jews during that period. Research in Italy demonstrated that myrrh has pain-relieving properties as well, which is probably why it was administered to Jesus prior to his crucifixion. The Hebrews would mix myrrh in their wine and drink it to raise their state of consciousness before participating in religious rituals. This mixture was also given to criminals a few hours before their execution to ease their mental suffering. Myrrh is mentioned for its therapeutic properties in the Old and New Testaments as well as the Koran and the Greek and Roman texts. In ancient Greece, soldiers would use a paste made with myrrh to heal battle wounds. The oil of myrrh is thick, sticky, and red, and has a smoky, earthy scent. In Egyptian times myrrh was

28 Completely Bromsgrove

used by Queen Hatshepsut from the 18th dynasty and it is recorded that she rubbed myrrh on her legs to make them fragrant. Theophrastus and Pliny both inform us that myrrh was a chief ingredient for three Egyptian cosmetics and these were Egyptian perfume, Mendesian ointment and another substance called Mageleion. Like frankincense, myrrh oil is used for respiratory problems, in steam inhalations or in chest rubs to help relieve coughs and to expel mucus. The essential oil has the same antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties as the resin, and it can be added to homemade creams for dry and cracked heels, dry skin on elbows and knees, and for athlete’s foot and other fungal infections. One of the main uses of myrrh is in healing gum infections and mouth ulcers. Tincture of myrrh (available from many natural health stores or herb and aromatherapy suppliers) is a traditional natural remedy for mouth ulcers. Apply it directly on the ulcer using a cotton bud or dilute it to use as a mouth wash. Myrrh resin is still used as incense today and is an ingredient in many incense sticks, often combined with frankincense. Myrrh and frankincense essential oils work well together in essential oil blends with bergamot and lavender. For more information about therapeutic oils, contact me at colette@need4change.com

HISTORY

School’s out T

he little-known story of how Bromsgrove’s three-tier school system was introduced is told in the latest issue of the Bromsgrove Rousler history magazine. James Baker, former headmaster of South Bromsgrove High School, has researched the background discussions leading to the reforms, which took place in the early 1970s. His account brings home the machinations that played out behind the scenes, leading to the system we have today. Firstly, those who backed the existing grammar school system managed to thwart the local education authority’s original proposals to protect privileges enjoyed by the selective high school. Secondly, parents from the Redditch area were able to mould the plans to their benefit. A separate article profiles Finstall Park School, an independent boys’ school that operated during the 1930s and 40s. The Bromsgrove Society has recently received an album of photographs that belonged to the co-owner, Mabel Waller, and captured the school’s bohemian, outdoor-oriented approach. Dianne Erismann, who lives in Canada, has written her memories of growing up in Stoke Works in the 1950s and tales she was told about the village’s history. Meanwhile, Tony Shinner describes the role his great-grandfather William Shinner played in bringing water to the town while manager of the East Worcestershire Water Company. Tony’s grandfather Harry Shinner captured unique pictures of the equipment used in two new pumping stations at Burcot and at Washingstocks, Catshill in the 1920s. Long before the financial sector became as concentrated as it is today, Bromsgrove had its own local banks. David Williams-Thomas describes his great-great-grandfather’s role in founding and running the Stourbridge & Kidderminster Bank. This was a forerunner of the Midland Bank and the Bromsgrove branch used to occupy the same site as its modern incarnation at 93 High Street. Also in this year’s edition are the late R.B. (‘Tim’) Brotherton’s memories of Bromsgrove Market in the 1930s, first published in 2002. It is one of a series of articles from the Rousler back catalogue that are being reprinted in the run-up to the magazine’s 40th anniversary in 2025. The Rousler is the annual local history magazine published by the Bromsgrove Society. This edition includes an appreciation of the late John Weston’s contribution to the magazine over many years. The magazine is available from a wide range of retail and other outlets, priced £4, and can also be ordered via www.bsoc. co.uk and @bromsgrovesoc on social media.

Butcher’s Block, Bromsgrove to celebrate award win with a well earned break H

igh street favourite Butcher’s Block Bromsgrove recently won the crown of ‘Best Independent’ at this years Birmingham Awards. Fighting off stiff competition from an array of established independents, the Judges were incredibly impressed with their commitment to community and business acumen.

“This award really means a lot to us. To scoop the top prize, when the judging process isn’t easy, was a surprise but one we are very proud to bring back to Bromsgrove” says Lilith. The wife and wife team are currently busy taking orders ready for the festive season and already this is proving to be their busiest Christmas yet. “In January we are having ourselves the first proper holiday in five years and will be closing for a week to get away. We’ve worked solidly building the business and feel we can finally warrant a proper rest,” says Michelle. Next year will also see the return of Lil’s Baps to Bromsgrove market where she will be trading on the last Friday of every month. A copyright problem has kept this spectacular movie out of cinemas for around 25 years and this is one of the first theatrical showings where the film can be enjoyed on a giant screen in its original SuperPanavision glory. Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison head the cast and the story of the poor flower seller picked out of the gutter and taught to speak proper comes from George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion. The music and lyrics added by Lerner and Loewe have made it a long running favourite. Operation Mincemeat (12A) is being screened on Saturday, January 27th at 7.30pm. In the middle of World War Two there were many plots and counter plots hatched but few were as audacious as Operation Mincemeat. A British agent is sent to decoy the enemy into thinking an invasion was imminent. A dangerous mission it seems but less perilous when the agent is already dead. Colin Firth plays the chap who had the idea in a film where the term “stiff upper lip” may be considered rather bad taste.

The FeckenOdeon is Feckenham’s community cinema based at Feckenham Village Hall, High Street, Feckenham, B96 6HN. Tickets for all FeckenOdeon films can be booked online through feckenodeon.co.uk, by phone on 0333 666 3366 or in person at The Rose & Crown and The Village Shop in Feckenham.

Popular Aaron reaches Sporting milestone W

hen Bromsgrove Sporting hosted Chelmsford City in the FA Cup second qualifying round at the Victoria Ground on September 30th, Aaron Roberts played his 250th game for the club.

In lower division football, players tend to move around a lot more so it is unusual for somebody to turn out for one club on so many occasions. Aaron is now in his fifth spell at the Victoria Ground having also played for Hednesford Town, Evesham United, Alvechurch and Worcester City, where he was captain. Before playing for Sporting, he turned out for Bromsgrove Rovers. Remarkably, at the age of 18, Aaron played left back for the Rouslers in their first competitive match on August 21st 2010 against Young Warriors of Coventry. He also has the dubious distinction of being the first Sporting player to get a red card in the away match against Chelmsley Town later that season. At the time of writing, he has made 260 appearances for Spor ting, scoring 19 goals. Away from football, Aaron works as an engineer for Severn Trent Water. He lives with his partner Emma and their son Darcy, who is nine years old.

Bromsgrove Sporting are proud of Aaron’s contribution to the club and Popular Aaron reaches Sporting milestone look forward to him making many more appearances. When Bromsgrove Sporting hosted Chelmsford City in the FA Cup sec September 30th, Aaron Roberts played his 250th game for the club.

Share of £20 million pot secured to keep

community pools afloat B romsgrove District Council has been awarded a share of the £20 million Swimming Pool Relief Fund, a vital lifeline for swimming pools and leisure centres across the nation.

Just over £24,000 of funding will go towards Bromsgrove Sport and Leisure Centre to assist in covering increased operating costs as well as contributing to improving the long-term sustainability of the centre. The funds aim to address challenges posed by rising energy and maintenance costs faced by leisure centres across the country and is part of the government’s broader effort to support grassroots sports facilities and achieve its ambitious target of getting 3.5 million more people active by 2030. Wayne Desmond, contract manager for Everyone Active who operate BSLC, said: “We’re delighted to have been awarded £24,000 from the Government’s Swimming Pool Support Fund, which will go a long way in helping children in the local community to become confident swimmers. “We’re extremely grateful to the district council for submitting a bid. The funds will go towards energy and maintenance costs, which will help us to continue to provide excellent swimming facilities and our awardwinning swimming lessons. Most importantly, children and adults of all ages can be more active.” Portfolio holder for leisure services, Councillor Steve Colella, said: “I am pleased that our bid was successful and thank our officers for taking the time to prepare and submit the bid so that as a result we can ensure that our pool remains accessible to

our residents. Learning to swim can save lives and providing more opportunity for residents of all ages to take advantage of that can only be good news.” Swimming is a valuable life skill that impacts safety, physical health, and mental wellbeing for people of all ages. Swim England’s latest Value of Swimming report has highlighted the social value of water-based activities, such as swimming, amounting to £2.4 billion annually. Lisa Dodd-Mayne, Sport England’s director of place, added: “We know just how vital swimming pools and leisure centres are to our nation’s activity levels. Many pools have faced a real and significant threat to their survival this year, as local authorities and operators battle the challenge of increased energy and maintenance costs, weakened reserves and difficulties with retaining staff. This is by no means the end of the work facing us or the support available, as we continue to work with our partners to ensure the long-term viability of these vital community resources.” Administered by Sport England, the fund provides a total of £60 million, over two phases, to local authorities in England as a support package for public leisure facilities with swimming pools.
