Presenting Grounds new front-runner!
The heart of Bromsgrove’s Recreation Ground now boasts a captivating new artwork that celebrates the town’s rich history.
On June 5th, a colourful floor painting named The Bromsgrove Galloper was created to pay homage to the site’s legacy as a hub for horse fairs and races, as well as its present-day association with circuses and fairs.
Created by talented local artists Keith Ashford and Elizabeth Turner, this permanent installation is the result of an inspiring collaborative effort. Through engaging workshops with local schools, youth groups and residents, the design of galloping horses emerged, capturing the spirit and energy of the Recreation Ground’s diverse history.
Local schools, including Meadows and Orchard First Schools, participated in workshops where 120 year three children delved into the history of the Recreation Ground, created horse automata, and even staged their own races. The Hub youth group contributed their creative ideas, exploring background colours and movement through a spin painting machine and the artists also paid a visit to Chandler Court, where eight residents and staff engaged in a craft-making activity. The project was supported throughout by historian, Pat Tansell, with expert local knowledge and insight.
Featuring vibrant horse and rider designs on the outer and inner granite circles and a compass at the centre, The Bromsgrove Galloper seamlessly extends from the central tarmac circle onto the cobbled area and outward, symbolically guiding visitors towards the four points of the compass and connecting them to the wider district.
The inspiration for this creation stems from extensive research conducted by the artists. Reflecting its historical significance as a venue for horse fairs, races, and fairs, they incorporated themes of a fairground carousel, compass, and zoetrope, paying tribute to the town’s past whilst also integrating elements from its history of manufacturing.
Bromsgrove District Council’s portfolio holder for leisure and cultural services, Councillor Steve Colella, said: “This artwork beautifully captures the essence of Bromsgrove’s past and present. It serves as a powerful reminder of the traditions that have shaped the town, while also embracing the modern-day activities that continue to bring our communities together.
“I encourage everyone, from residents to visitors passing through, to take a moment to enjoy this artwork which is a testament to our vibrant community and the collaborative spirit that brought this creation to life.”
This project has been funded by Section 106 monies, given to the district council by developers to invest in the improvement of the Recreation Ground. The artwork is now open for all to enjoy.

International Link welcome French visitors from twin town
For the first time since lockdown, Bromsgrove International Link, formerly Bromsgrove Twinning Association, were able to welcome a party of visitors from the town’s twin in France, Saint-Sauveur-Lendelin, over the spring bank holiday weekend.
The party arrived by coach at the Parkside Centre to be welcomed by the new chairman of Bromsgrove District Council, Councillor Sam Ammar, and BIL chairman Roger Westwood. Both greeted the guests in impeccable French despite Sam not having spoken any since her school days.
The visitors then spent the remainder of the afternoon with hosts in their own homes. Some of them who had not visited Bromsgrove before enjoyed a tour around the town. The new Cofton Village Hall was used in the evening for a buffet meal.
The twinning visits are an attempt to build friendships and cultural links and to foster good relations between different people. Much time was spent making comparisons of life in our two countries. There are more similarities than differences but interestingly all English hosts were grilled as to how Brexit is affecting them.
Sunday was spent in Malvern with a guided tour around the priory in both English and French. In the evening, everyone gathered in the Rouslers Bar at Bromsgrove Sporting FC for a buffet meal and an impromptu jam session led by the French coach driver, who is also a talented singer and guitarist. The evening also included a tour around the Victoria Ground. One of the Sporting directors donated a home and away shirt to the delight of two young visitors.
Guests departed for the cross-channel ferry from Portsmouth on Monday so they could be back home in time for work and school the following day.
Plans are now in progress to visit St Sauveur, which is a large village on Normandy’s Cotentin peninsula,
in 2024. A visit to Bromsgrove’s twin town in Germany, Gronau, is also a possibility.
New members are always welcome to join BIL, which organises social occasions during the year as well as the visits. Further information is available at www. bromstwin.org.uk

Good communication is diamond couple’s key to successful marriage
ABromsgrove husband celebrating his diamond wedding anniversary has offered advice to newlyweds seeking a lifetime of marital bliss.
He explained that a couple should “never go to bed on an argument” , while also emphasising the importance of looking after each other unwaveringly and to always share experiences and feelings with your partner.
Martyn Davies gave a speech at an event held at Bromsgrove care home, Burcot Grange and Lodge, to mark his and wife Gloria’s 60th wedding anniversary on June 24th, 2023.
The home, which is part of the Berkley Care Group, invited Martyn and Gloria’s family and friends to celebrate their milestone at the property’s facilities.
The couple first met in 1959 at the Laura Dixson’s dance hall in Birmingham when Martyn and Gloria were 19 and 18 respectively. The hall was a popular social hub in the 1950s.
Martyn proposed to Gloria in her family home in 1961. They exchanged vows shortly before Gloria turned 21 and were joined by their families at The Hollybush in Quinton. Their wedding day was attended by around 120 loved ones and is a treasured memory for the couple.
Following the wedding, the newlyweds embarked on a romantic honeymoon getaway to Jersey. However, the marriage initially got off to a rocky start following an unforeseen incident at the seaside, resulting in a hospital visit for Martyn.
General manager of Burcot Grange and Lodge, Vicky Osborne said: “We are delighted to celebrate the 60th wedding anniversary of Gloria and Martyn. It was lovely to welcome their family and friends to join us in celebrating this incredible milestone.
“The celebration of Gloria and Martyn’s wedding anniversary is testament to the quality of care we provide to our dementia residents. It was wonderful to witness their journey and be a part of their special day, surrounded by their loved ones.”

Magic moments shared at 60th anniversary
Nearly forty ladies commemorated the 60th anniversary of the foundation of Bentley Pauncefoot WI on May 16th.
It has always been traditional for the institute to arrange a celebratory lunch in May with the committee providing the main course and the members supplying desserts. This year, with the coronation of King Charles III in May, it was a double party opportunity too good to miss.
Decked with bunting, Bentley Village Hall became the scene of fun and frivolity. The food was delicious with home-cooked honey roast ham, quiches, and an array of salads. Puddings included roulades, chocolate mousse, cheesecake and strawberries and cream. Glasses of fizz were raised in celebration.
For a competition, members were asked to bring along an item of Bentley Pauncefoot WI memorabilia. There were many interesting entries, but the overwhelming winner was a pretty metal box brought in by Chris Badger, our president. It was made in the village and was used by Mrs Joan Badger, Chris’ motherin-law, in the early days when she was treasurer.
Members were more than happy just to chat and exchange memories, but extra entertainment had been arranged as a surprise. David Jones, magician and conjuror extraordinaire, delighted his audience with a variety of baffling tricks and accompanying
banter. First, he visited each table as lunch was ending and performed card tricks. He also made little balls disappear and appear in the most unlikely places. Even at close quarters it was impossible to spot the illusion and Michelle is still trying to work out how one ball emerged from the back of her hair!
Then, with the help of two assistants plucked from the audience, David did more magic. With Jane he demonstrated cutting a rope into pieces, knotting it and then, magically reassembling it. The trick was impressive, but even more impressive was the sight of Jane performing the same trick faultlessly despite not really knowing what she was doing. Sandra then assisted David with a card trick. This involved an invisible pack of cards and an invisible camel called Humphrey. There was a lot of mime and laughter and incidentally David did pick the right card, but you had to be there.
All in all, we enjoyed a memorable celebration in good company totally in the spirit of the WI.

Bet on begonias for a stunning summer show
Itwouldn’t be summer without begonias, would it? They are the real show offs of the plant world. They range from the big and blousey, in your face varieties that we use in pot and hanging basket displays, to the more petite, tender border types. As well as the fiery colours of the flowers, begonias are also grown for their show stopping and eye-catching foliage.
Begonias are available either as fleshy tubers or as fibrous-rooted plants. The tuberous varieties have the big, showy flowers which come in bright shades of pink, yellow, orange, red and white. These will give you a stunning display throughout summer and into autumn and make excellent pot and hanging basket plants, as some of them will trail.
Fibrous begonias have a root ball of thin, fibrous roots. They include the dwarf bedding types and tend to have smaller leaves and flowers. They are best grown in containers and window boxes or as bedding at the front of a shady border.
They are usually treated as annuals and discarded at the end of the season. Foliage begonias are grown for their spectacular leaves, which come in a range of shapes, colours and patterns. They are popular as house plants and can be placed outside in summer, where they bring an exotic almost jungle look to your garden.
All begonias prefer to be situated out of direct sun, so are a welcome addition to a shady patio or border and will tolerate some dappled sunshine. The delicate blooms and leaves can easily crisp in direct sun. Only plant begonias outside when no more frosts are forecast, usually the end of May. Water regularly and feed weekly with a high potash fertiliser like tomato feed.
Plant begonia tubers in March or April into individual pots or into a seed tray, hollow side up. Plant them 2.5cm deep and keep in a warm spot that is at least 18°C. Once the leaves begin to show, pot them into larger pots filled with peat-free,multipurpose compost. They are frost tender so won’t survive in our cold weather and should be dug up and stored indoors for the winter, in a shed or greenhouse.
Jobs to keep you busy over July & August
It’s all about keeping your plants watered, fed and deadheaded regularly, paying particular attention to hanging baskets or pots. Thin overcrowded apple, plums and pears. This will ensure bigger and better quality fruit. Keep on top of weeds by hoeing or hand weeding frequently.
Water and feed sweet peas throughout the season, make sure to pick the flowers every few days, and remove any seed pods to prolong flowering.
Keep an eye out for pests such as lily beetles, snails and aphids, remove them before they do too much harm.
Cut lavender for drying, choosing newly opened flowers for the best fragrance; but leave enough on the bush for the pollinators. Hang up in a cool, dark place.
Make successional sowings of beetroot, radishes, spinach, lettuce and salad crops. All of these are fast growing and will ensure an extended season of fresh vegetables.
With a vase full of your homegrown flowers and a plate of vegetables, what more could you want in this warm month?

Wild for summer
Ivividly remember my first marbled white. I was entranced as this cream and black butterfly fluttered rather lazily through a shrubbery next to a meadow. I followed it for a short while, hoping to capture its beauty in a photograph. A passer-by told me I was wasting my time; these are butterflies that don’t settle for long.
He was right. I gently followed its meandering flight and it seemed an eternity before it finally settled on a leaf long enough for me to creep up and snap a couple of shots. What a beauty it was when I finally got a proper look at it – a chequerboard pattern marks out the marbled white as one of our most delightful butterflies.
These are delicate and captivating butterflies of meadows and grasslands. Not for these caterpillars is the restricted diet that some of their fussier cousins follow. They’re happy munching away on a wide range of common grasses such as cock’s-foot, fescue and Yorkshire fog. Females fly through the jungle of grasses flicking their eggs towards the ground; when the eggs hatch into caterpillars, they clamber into clumps of grass and chomp their way to pupation. Adult butterflies will be emerging now and will be on the wing into August.
England has lost about 97% of its wildflower-rich meadows but here in Worcestershire we’re lucky enough to have around 20% of the meadows that remain. Meandering in meadows is tricky because there are so many delicate plants that are easily squished by our feet but while some are inaccessible, others have paths mown through them. The good news is that the range of marbled whites has expanded so if you’re somewhere with lilac-coloured scabious, thistles and knapweed, keep a look out for marbled whites. They’ve been spotted on railway embankments, woodland rides and even road verges as well as more traditional meadows. I’ve even had
one fly through my garden on its hunt for a mate and suitable habitat.
Look for them in the morning when they bask with their wings open to soak up the warmth. Whilst admiring them, spare a thought for a careless bird who tries to eat one. Naturalist and author Miriam Rothschild always believed that their eye-catching pattern must act as a warning to birds. She was right! Shortly before her death in 2005, chemical analysis showed that marbled whites are indeed poisonous to birds. The caterpillars sometimes feast on grass that has been infected by ergot fungus, the toxins of which are stored in their bodies and make the adult butterfly dangerous enough to be left alone. Have the flower fairies been Bromsgrove?visiting
Cast your mind back to May 5th. You will probably remember the day if you were lucky enough to find the free gift of a flower arrangement.
Small flower bouquets were left as surprise gifts, not by flower fairies, but by members of Bromsgrove Flower Club. These gifts were left to make someone’s day and to celebrate National Flower Arranging Day. If you were one of the lucky people who found a gift, Bromsgrove Flower Club members hope you enjoyed your surprise.
At the June meeting, flower demonstrator Jo Davis took ‘Women Who Changed the World’ as her theme. First, she chose Emmeline Pankhurst, well known as a campaigner for votes for women.
Other choices included: Octavia Hill – a Victorian woman who promoted good housing and open air spaces for the poor. She helped to found the National Trust; Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, better known as Coco Chanel, who designed the ‘little black dress’ in 1925, and Chanel No 5 perfume in 1926. This remains a best seller; Lesley Hornby, better known as Twiggy, who was the face of the 1960s.
At this month’s meeting on Thursday, July 20th, the guest demonstrator will be Emma Da Silva, who has chosen ‘A Great British Summer Time’, as her title. Emma’s arrangements will be included as prizes in the raffle. The title for the July competition is ‘Red, White and Blue’.
Throughout the year, Bromsgrove Flower Club meets every third Thursday of the month at 2pm at All Saints Church Hall, Burcot Lane, Bromsgrove, B60 1AF.
On Thursday, August 17th, the guest demonstrator will be Christine Ramsey. The title of her demonstration is ‘Past and Present. A history of flower arranging’.
Christine’s arrangements will be included as raffle prizes. The title for the August competition is ‘Flowers in a frame’. Everyone is encouraged to enter and to interpret the title.
Everyone is welcome to join us. Come for tea and a chat and enjoy an uplifting afternoon. The entrance fee for members is £3 and for visitors the entrance fee is £8.

Healing your best friends
This is the last of my animal related articles on Redox Signaling Molecules and in this issue of Completely Bromsgrove I am going to share some testimonials that relate to cats and dogs
As a nation of animal lovers, we all want the best for our pets and that includes the least amount of time at the vets. Dog allergies are a big problem these days and I wish I had this product when my golden retriever was alive as it would have saved me thousands of pounds in vet bills.
Having owned dogs, cats, horses, and guinea pigs I know only too well how expensive this can be. However, there is another way. In general, all animals have an inherent ability to heal themselves, particularly in the wild, but domesticated animals seem, to some extent, to have lost this ability.
What I am sharing with you is a product that turbocharges the immune and healing system of an animal (or a human). The immunological and healing processes can only kick in when the body knows something is wrong. How does the body know? Because every single cell in your body sends routine messages about its health. Unfortunately, this communication mechanism becomes sluggish and breaks down the older we or our pets become. Imagine going from fax to 5G? Well, this is what this product offers. But don’t just take my word for it, read the following testimonials.
“Our Staffie Jax (above) was hours from being euthanised due to his terrible allergies, no one wanted him. I saw the love in his eyes. We tried everything for his food and environmental allergies. He was raw and in so much pain. I was taking ASEA so I thought, why not and started giving Jax 1oz am and pm. Look at him ten months on.”
“Our Staffie Sahara (below left) got an unwanted insect bite and allergic reaction. We gave her the Redox drink orally and sprayed it onto the affected areas and she is now back to normal.”
If you have a cat, you will know that they get into fights and get bitten and scratched. This can be very difficult to heal without a course of antibiotics and trip to the vet. Thanks to Katie Solis for this testimonial: “I have worked with animals in nutrition and behaviour counselling for more than 25 years, and when I learned about ASEA, I was so excited. Since I have been working with ASEA in my animal clinic for eight years now the changes have been awesome. My own cat, Simon, had a serious blood disease that is normally a death sentence within months. He lived with it for 15 years. ASEA, along with a species-appropriate diet, kept him well and happy longer than anyone, especially the vets, could believe. ASEA continues to bless my family and my animal clients daily.”

Colourful Court Leet Parade celebrations
TheColourful Court Leet parade brought the town to life on Saturday 24th June to celebrate the Royal Charter of 1199.
With the 16 strong Shirley Pipe Band playing the bagpipes, the Bailiff Robert Bird, led the Court Leet procession from Housman Hall, on the traditional route along Worcester Road where the crowds had started to form to see this historic annual event. The procession continued the length of Bromsgrove High Street where many residents and visitors to the town gathered to watch, taking photos and video as the group moved through.
There was a wonderfully joyous atmosphere in the town, created by the pipe band, vibrant parade and the high spirits of those who had gathered to see the traditional event. Members of the Court Leet were in full robes and regalia. The Bailiff in royal blue robes and the Reeve in purple robes both with chains of office and flanked by their pole bearers. Followed by Officers of the Court in green robes, Ealdormen in red robes and Tythingmen in blue robes - some carrying the ceremonial poles. The Lord of the Manor joined the parade in top hat and tails, ladies of the Court joined wearing brightcoloured dresses and hats and members of visiting Courts paraded in their robes. The Chairman of the Council Ms Sam Ammar was seen wearing her chains of office, walking alongside the town’s MP the Right Honorable Sajid Javid and other guests.
The procession halted briefly at the Old Post Office for an assize of ale, continued past the themed street market and came to a stop at the Housman Statue, which had been remounted on the plinth just two days previously. At the statue the Bailiff proclaimed the Charter of 1199 granting a fair so the people “might take holiday on that day.”
Officers of the Court gave the assizes of bread, ale, brooks and meat where the Carnitor sampled Butcher’s Block creation the Boyden Pie which has been created in honour of BBC Radio Presenter and
Of the day, the Bailiff commented “There was a real sense of home-town pride in Bromsgrove today. I’m proud that the Court Leet continues to uphold our ancient and unique traditions. The markets were excellent and I hope that the stalls and all the businesses in the town were well supported by the many people who attended to enjoy the traditional parade and ceremonies.”

Friends clear up St John’s Churchyard ahead of Open Day
Ateam of 16 spent 41 volunteer hours at St John’s Church on a sunny Saturday afternoon clearing weeds and garden waste in the churchyard and collected 25 large bags of rubbish.
The team concentrated on the paths around the church, clearing weeds from the edges by the gravestones. This really improved the look of the paths. Volunteers also worked around some of the gravestones and tombs to remove self-set saplings and weeds. During the work the team uncovered the broken half of the Rose Family gravestone under the weeds and grass. The Roses’ were sextons at the church for many years in the 1800s.
A student from North Bromsgrove High School who is gardening at St John’s for the volunteering part of their The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Bronze joined the team for the clean up afternoon.
The event was organised by the Friends of St John’s to take place ahead of the Patronal Service on 25th June and the Open Day which will be held on Saturday 22nd July between 11am and 3pm.
At the Open Day visitors will be able to climb the tower to see the views, learn about the history of the church and it’s people from historian Simon Henderson, meet members of the Bromsgrove Society who will be hosting a book stall and find out about the latest fundraising project to “Save our Spire”.
The Open Day is held in collaboration with the team from Creative Arts who will be in Sanders Park on the same day with their 12 hour Creative Fest. Barty Bee visited St John’s to check out the view of the park from the top of the tower. On the 22nd July there will be a trail between the two events. All are welcome to these two free events, held as part of the Bromsgrove Festival.
A huge thanks go to those who volunteered at the clean up afternoon and made a difference. To find out how you can help visit www.facebook.com/FriendsStJohnsBromsgrove

White Chocolate and Raspberry Brioche Pudding
We always have white chocolate buttons in the cupboard (unless Josh has scoffed them!) and thanks to being married to a baker, brioche! But this loaf can stale quite quickly. When it does don’t throw it away as it is your secret weapon when making this yummy indulgent pudding. Because of its high butter content there is no need to butter the bread in my take on breadand butter pudding.
Preheat the oven to 170°C/Gas mark 3. Lightly whisk the eggs, cream, crème fraîche, milk, caster sugar and vanilla together.
Cut the brioche into 2cm chunks and scatter half into a buttered 30 x 20cm ovenproof dish along with half the chocolate buttons and raspberries. Repeat this once more.
Pour over the cream and egg mixture, press down lightly then bake for 25–30 minutes or until golden brown. If the chocolate starts to burn reduce the heat a little.
Once cooked remove from the oven and serve warm with cream or custard.
Ingredients:
• 3 large eggs
• 300ml double cream
• 300ml crème fraîche
• a little vanilla extract
• 100ml milk
• 1 tbsp caster sugar
• 1 x 600g brioche loaf
• 120g white chocolate buttons (you can use dark or milk instead)
• around 300g raspberries

Lend a hand and make a difference
Charities, including Age UK Bromsgrove, Redditch and Wyre Forest, along with so many local groups and organisations, could not do what they do without the amazing support of volunteers.
However, with changing demographics and declining volunteer participation rates across the country, many are worried about the impact that this will have on our communities.
The Big Help Out campaign, which featured as part of the King’s Coronation celebrations, was launched to help highlight the importance and benefits of volunteering and to encourage more people to lend a hand and get involved in their communities.
People often have their own individual reasons for volunteering, but it is often said that by improving your community, you can also add value to your own experience within it. The following are often mentioned when volunteers are asked why they decided to get involved:
• The chance to give something back and to make a positive difference.
• The opportunity to gain new skills and experience.
• Meeting new people and making new connections.
• Wanting to feel valued and part of a team.
• To improve confidence and wellbeing - many of those that volunteer say that they get as much back as they give.
One of Age UK BRWF’s retail volunteers summarised her experience: “It has given me a new lease of life. The people I work with and the customers who come in, they are just so lovely. I can’t explain how
good it is to be here and knowing that what you are doing is helping. I go home and feel happy inside.”
Like many organisations, Age UK BRWF offer a range of different volunteering opportunities, from supporting services like our befriending service (visiting or calling a local older person to help prevent and tackle loneliness and isolation) as well as our groups and activities, being part of our retail team (with a variety of roles in our charity shops and at our online sales and distribution hub), through to getting involved with the operation and running of the charity.
If you would like to find out more about any of our volunteering roles, please contact volunteer@ ageukbrwf.org.uk or call 01527 570490 . Alternatively, for details of a range of opportunities across Bromsgrove and Redditch, visit the local volunteer centre, BARN, at www.barn.org.uk/volunteering
As the Big Help Out campaign says, ‘Helping hands come in all shapes and sizes’, but they are all important - by linking those hands we make and strengthen those community connections and we really can make a difference.

Bromsgrove TV newsreader steps in to save the day…
Midlands Today Presenter Joanne Malin is to compere a special evening of entertainment to celebrate 50 years of the Housman Society, after the BBC’s Nick Owen was forced to pull out.
Joanne, who has lived in Bromsgrove for the last eight years says “I’m delighted to step in and help with what will be a really lovely evening of poetry and music. At the moment Nick, who is a close colleague and friend, is recovering from surgery, so when he asked me to stand in for him, I didn’t hesitate. I’m certainly not a Housman specialist but I’m excited to be learning more about our town’s famous son in the setting of his old school.”
The Housman Celebration is on Monday 10th July at Routh Concert Hall, Bromsgrove School and starts with a drinks reception at 6.30pm. As well as Joanne Malin introducing the evening and reading a poem or two, the evening includes some of the famous poet’s work put to music courtesy of the The Dante Quartet, with renowned pianist Benjamin Frith. Also joining the line-up is tenor Alessandro Fisher, who will sing the magnificent Housman settings by Worcestershire’s Ian Venables. Completing the cast and reading work from Bromsgrove’s famous poet are Housman Society members Linda Hart and Max Hunt.
The BBC’s Nick Owen has a deep affection for Housman and his poems. Nick was present at the inaugural meeting of the Housman Society 50 years ago, at Bromsgrove School, so the organising team were sorry that he was no longer available. They do send him best wishes for a speedy recovery. Having met with Joanne Malin and felt her enthusiasm for Bromsgrove and the celebration event, the organisers are certain this is going to be a wonderful evening. Tickets are still available, and it is hoped that the local community will come out and enjoy this fantastic event.
Tickets are £25 and include a welcome drink and canapes, which will hopefully be served outside

in the evening sun. For those who are unable to attend, the celebration event is being live streamed at a cost of £12. Students are invited to the evening free of charge. Specifically designed for under tens, the event features role play areas, sumo suits, huge water fights, giant inflatable games, character meet and greets, an under-fives area, high energy inflatables and more.
Funtopia’s most popular attractions include a giant 110ft obstacle course, where both kids and grown-ups can compete, role play areas including the farmyard, construction zone and Cozy Coup Car Club and activity arena with pop up games and activities such as giant water fights and NERF wars.
All activities and games are included in the price. Please note that some activities have height/age restrictions attached. We’re open from 11.30am to 5pm.
After trialling Funtopia’s new autism friendly sessions last year, the 2023 tour will feature an autism friendly session at the start of every event from 10.30am to 11.30am. Numbers are limited and tickets can be purchased in advance via Eventbrite. With the ever-increasing costs of living, Funtopia has decided to keep 2022 ticket prices for this summer.
“Providing families with a very reasonably priced day out has always been one of our top priorities. This year we believe that it is even more important to offer all families the opportunity to enjoy a day out together,” said Sarah Green, Funtopia director.
“We know how hard it can be for families to afford a day out. Most of the time the costs don’t end at the entrance either, with rides, prize stalls and food sometimes costing more than the entrance fee. Therefore, this year we have decided not to feature any additional pay-per-go rides or game stalls. Once you have paid to enter Funtopia, all the activities are included in the price.”
Visitors are encouraged to join the picnic in the park and bring their own lunch and blanket. Refreshments will be on sale throughout the day too.
Tickets are priced at: Main session - Under 90cm free, over 90cm £10, adults £2.50. Autism friendly session - Under 90cm free, over 90cm £5, adults free.

Michelle’s journey to Worcs Open Studios
Catshill-based
artist Michelle Doidge has been practising art as a hobby for more than 20 years, but it is only in the past 18 months that she has taken the bold step of turning her passion into a business.
For the second year running she is participating in August’s Worcestershire Open Studios free art event when artists open their studios/homes to members of the public. This is Michelle’s story.
“Art plays a significant part in my life and I find myself constantly inspired by the natural world. The beauty and fragility of the natural world is at the heart of all my paintings whether representational or abstract and is always a constant source of inspiration for me.
“I am fortunate to be surrounded by the ancient countryside of north Worcestershire and my landscapes often feature the dramatic skies and magical sunsets I experience here and on my travels. I also love to paint the wild, energising seascapes found on the Isles of Scilly as well as the breathtaking and dramatic scenery of Scotland.
“Predominantly, I am a self-taught artist based in Bromsgrove and have been doing art as a hobby for over 20 years, working mainly in oils and pastels as well as metallic acrylics. I often incorporate unconventional methods to convey 3D texture into my work – even using Polyfilla to attain heavy impasto in my art. My portfolio of work is expanding – both through my own experimentation as well as private commissions.
“I studied A level art at school and obtained an A grade. I then didn’t pick up a pencil until years later when I decided to return to art and embarked on adult education classes. I did this for well over 20 years purely as a hobby and for “me time” as I had a busy career in television. I fell in love with art all over again. During that time, I had been approached to do a few commissions for friends and family, but I never intended to take
it up as a career or pursue it as a business. Then Covid struck!
“During the third lockdown I started to re-evaluate what I really wanted to do with the rest of my life. During the long winter days of 2021, I thought: ‘Well, why not give a career in art a go?’ Since I made that decision, I have worked day and night, while also holding down a part-time job with Worcester City Council, to produce a body of art that I could start showing to people and, after visiting studios as part of the Worcestershire Open Studios scheme in 2021, I decided to take the plunge.
“I joined art groups including Droitwich Arts Network, Worcestershire Artists, and North Worcestershire Art Collective. Since then, I have either exhibited as a solo artist or as part of a collective or my artwork has been exhibited in galleries.
“Art connects us all and is a force for good and I am looking forward to welcoming visitors to my Open Studios event. This will be my second year taking part and I hope to build upon the success of 2022 and to meet more people who share a passion for art. I am happy for visitors to touch my work so that they can be drawn even further into the painting.”
Michelle will be exhibiting at Worcestershire Open Studios at her home studio in Catshill on August 19th, 20th, 26th, 27th and 28th from 10.30am - 4.30pm, visitors can just drop by during these times at her studio - 312 Stourbridge Road, Catshill, Bromsgrove B61 9LH. Original artwork, prints and greetings cards will be available to purchase.

will be taking to the stage on Saturday, July 1st.
This four-strong group, Phil, Mick, Leigh and Matt, have performed across the Midlands for many years from headlining at the Pie Factory, Tipton, to pubs in their home village of Bournheath.
This July, the group will be performing something different to any of their other local shows that people may have seen. So, sit back and enjoy a lazy summer evening with some great music and an intimate performance.
As part of Bromsgrove Festival, Fairfield Flicks will screen Translations (15), the debut feature film from US filmmaker Keith Kopp, on Wednesday, July 19th. The film is a Welsh romance drama that explores love between two people who are dealing with mental health challenges and stars some amazing new talent including Kate Morgan-Jones (The Pact and The Forfeit) and Alan Emrys (Young Wallander and Host).
It’s been a long time since Stef last left her house in Wales. The loss of her brother combined with the quiet dread of the unknown conspiring to keep her inside. When her brother Liam’s best friend, Evan, arrives to give Liam’s journal to Stef, sparks fly. However, when Stef and Evan start to unpack their shared trauma, they question if their relationship can ever break free from its confines? Caught between Evan’s images of a world outside that they could inhabit, and a story of lost love that Stef is translating from a previous generation, Stef must choose the kind of future she wants, and whether Evan will be a part of it.
A comedy drama to end the month, Mr Malcolm’s List (12) will be shown on Wednesday, July 26. When she fails to meet an item on his list of requirements for a bride, Julia Thistlewaite (Zawe Ashton) is jilted by London’s most eligible bachelor, Mr. Malcolm (Sopé Dìrísù). Feeling humiliated and determined to exact revenge, she convinces her friend Selina Dalton (Freida Pinto) to play the role of his ideal match. Soon, Mr. Malcolm wonders whether he’s found the perfect woman - or the perfect hoax.

Grown up Ceed puts
Style and sense seldom go hand in hand. Practicality so often pushes the ‘pose’ factor into a corner while the craving for style for its own sake can result in driver and passengers squeezing themselves in to conform to the concept.
Everyone craves the ‘Goldilocks’ car - not too big, not too small - just right for the job. So, if your motoring needs run to plenty of space minus beefed-up bulk, sensible sophistication, and smooth, perky, economical performance, you will be interested in what Kia has to offer in their third generation Ceed 5 Dr. Hatch which has been designed in Europe by Europeans for Europeans. What success they have had and deservedly so. This rival to the Focus, Astra and Golf is so good in ‘real life’ terms that it really doesn’t matter that next door’s Ford Focus with its stingy three-year warranty, might lap Silverstone one microsecond quicker and that VW’s Golf has doors that close with a ‘clunk’. What really matters is that if a car component breaks, you just turn to that wonderful seven-year Kia warranty.
In hatchback mode, with a range of engine options and a plethora of standard features, this automobile is as firmly positioned in a competitive market to draw admiring attention as any. I made a point of putting it through its paces in a variety of motoring situations and the Ceed did not disappoint. It is truly a car for all seasons, a car for all reasons, a car for three cheers.
This model has been a game-changer for Kia. Its European design and quality are a match for anything in its class. Narrower and lower than previous versions it has a sporty stance, upmarket looks with an attractive profile. Improvements over earlier versions are not only visual: they are actual as well as perceived and torsional body strength has been increased, so it’s a lot safer too.

Level 2 (Models are Level 2, GT-Line, 3 and GT-Line S) tested here has cornering lights, parking sensors, all round electric windows, cruise control and speed limiter plus a quality stereo system and more. It’s a tasteful and well executed cabin that offers tactile delight with good quality materials as well as space enough for five adults. It seems like luxury you shouldn’t be able to get for the price. At £22,565 on the road, it’s not cheap but try specifying a Focus or Astra or Golf to those levels and you might think again.
Ceeds have always been praised for their smooth and efficient engines - but Kia has not rested on its laurels. The 158 bhp 1.5 petrol engine of the test car that will take you to over 130mph is beautifully smooth and is now less polluting and more fuel efficient. It’s very clean and claimed economy is 51.4 mpg overall - but the reality is that you can get an easy 58/60 mpg driving gently. As for the gearbox, I always
prefer automatic, but the Ceed’s gear change is so smooth and slick that it almost converted me back to wanting a manual change again.
When it comes to driving manners the Ceed feels very grown up. Ride quality is supple, roll angles are low and steering is precise. It’s rare for its class to have suspension that makes for a car that feels tuned for smiles.
As with all modern cars the high-tech stuff keeps coming and coming - but one of the pleasing features of the Ceed is that it doesn’t overawe. Everything is set for driver relaxation and the best technologies are deployed to only come into play when really needed.
In a Ceed you drive with every confidence that you are in a safe car and yet one which still retains a commitment to the simple pleasure of driving. Its strength is in the ease with which it can be driven and the efficient way it performs. And it’s such good value that in my view it puts Astra, Focus and Golf in the shade.

Croft rise to all the cup challenges
It’s been an up and down few weeks at Avoncroft as the season edges towards the halfway stage.
The First XI sit in sixth place in Worcestershire Division Three with four wins and two defeats from their six games played; continuing to rue the loss of the first four games due to the weather which left them with an uphill battle to climb the table.
The Second XI have had more luck with the weather, but no more consistency on the pitch with a record of four wins and three defeats from their seven completed games, while the Third XI have found the going tough after promotion last year –one win from six games leaves them perilously above the drop zone.
Croft have found more success in the cup competitions, with the First XI winning three games to reach the semi-final stage of the Worcestershire KO Trophy. Just one more victory would see Avoncroft into the final with a chance of picking up their third piece of cup silverware in the last five years. The Second XI also had a good cup run,
reaching the quarter-final of the Carter Cup before falling to local rivals Himbleton.
Cup success has rubbed off on Croft’s junior sides with the under 13s also reaching the semi-final stage of their county cup, whilst the under 14s find themselves at the quarter-final stage.
The softball sides have also found success, with the under eights and under nines winning recent festivals whilst the under nines and under 11s girls’ sides have also more than held their own in their first year playing competitive games. All in all, a positive start for Croft’s junior section.
Alongside the cricket, the club’s social calendar clicks into gear over the summer months with the highlight being the annual beer festival, taking place on the weekend of July 7th to 9th. If you’re at a loss for something to pass the time, why not pop down, watch a bit of cricket, and sample the variety of beers on offer.

Bromsgrove Golf Club reaches 30 year milestone
This year Bromsgrove Golf Club celebrates its 30th anniversary with a series of events.
The Morris family developed the golf centre in 1992 with a driving range and a nine-hole course. The success of the first nine holes soon became apparent thanks to the initiative shown by Ted and his sons Philip and Adam, who invested in the flair and style of highly respected golf course architects Hawtree & Son.
Many golfers then started asking about membership which resulted in Bromsgrove Golf Club being formed in 1993, the affairs of which are managed by the members. The course was increased to 18 holes a couple of years later and the club is now home to more than 800 members.
Earlier this year Edward’s Bar and Restaurant underwent a significant refurbishment and is open to members and the general public, serving an extensive range of meals and beverages.
We are holding a festival of golf in August to celebrate 30 years of golf at the club. This will provide an opportunity for golfers from other clubs to come and enjoy the challenge of Bromsgrove with its beautiful mature trees and undulating fairways at a series of open competitions.
The programme starts with a Mixed Pairs Open on Sunday, August 13th. The entry fee is £15 for members and £20 for visitors which includes a cream tea after your game. This is followed by:
• An AmAm on Tuesday, August 15th: teams of four (any combination) with two scores to count
• A Greensomes Stableford on Wednesday, August 16th: pairs (any combination)
• An Alliance on Friday, August 18th: teams of three (any combination) with two scores to count.
