Welcome to the April issue of Completely Bromsgrove

We are proud to announce that this is the 50th edition of our magazine. Over the past five years, we have brought you many news and business stories, fascinating features, and useful community information. Turn to pages 30 and 31 to view just a small selection of highlights.

Jo Slade, chair of Bromsgrove History Society, talks us through the history of the High Street and the pedestrianised area which was officially marked on April 23rd 1983. As a child growing up in Bromsgrove, I still remember cars in the High Street, and I can hardly believe it’s been four decades since vehicles were banned. Turn to pages 38 and 39 to read more about how the High Street once looked.

Another celebration this month is the 36th annual lecture of the Housman Society when Julian Hunt will be celebrating “The Housman Family story”. You can find further details on page 24.

Wendy Carter from Worcestershire Wildlife Trust talks about Easter’s eggs. Not the chocolate varieties of course, but our precious wildlife. Turn to pages 20 and 21 to learn more.

The Easter bank holiday period begins with Good Friday on April 7th and the Completely Bromsgrove team would like to wish all our readers a very Happy Easter.

With very best wishes,

Do your bit to drive down doorstep crime

Residents are being called upon to support elderly and vulnerable friends, family, and neighbours after reports of cold calling and possible scams in Bromsgrove. A scheme to deter cold callers and rogue traders is in place across the district and the council’s community safety team are urging more residents to sign up and work with their neighbours to ward off doorstep criminals.

After receiving reports from areas with known vulnerable or elderly residents, the council are encouraging more people to be part of the Nominated Neighbour scheme which deters scam callers, who will not want to have their identity to be checked.

Nominated Neighbour uses bright yellow window stickers to show potential house callers that that they will only be seen if accompanied by a known and trusted person, after their identity has been verified by that other person. All it takes is a neighbour, family friend or family member to agree to be nominated and have callers directed to them.

Councillor Margaret Sherrey, Bromsgrove District Council’s portfolio holder for community safety, said:

“Some con artists and rogue traders will knock on doors to see if they can bamboozle someone, often leaving the householder out of pocket and shaken up. These criminals are the lowest of the low, preying on vulnerable people but as those already using Nominated Neighbour know, this scheme can give cold callers the cold shoulder. If you think it could be right for you or someone you know, then why not get in touch. It’s free, and our community safety team can also offer guidance and support.”

When assessing the success of the scheme, every member asked reported significantly fewer cold callers or, in the majority of cases, a complete stop. Several also reported that they had seen people walk up to their door, see the sign, and walk off.

Leader of Bromsgrove District Council, Councillor Karen May, said: “I’d like to remind residents that our council officers will always carry official ID and will be happy to wait if you want to check it by calling the council on our main switchboard number 01527 881288. Always be wary of anyone pretending to be us, offering to do work on our behalf which you can ‘claim back’ or who is unwilling to let you double check their identity.”

The scheme is free and is delivered to homes by the North Worcestershire Community Safety Partnership. In addition to the window sticker, a pack containing useful information on keeping safe is also provided.

Further details about the scheme are available at: www.nwcsp.org/help-and-advice/nominatedneighbour-scheme.aspx

Renewed pledge to press for improved rail connectivity

www.bromsgroverail.org.uk

The “new” Bromsgrove station was opened in July 2016, and was constructed with four platforms so that it could be used as an “interchange” station. However, nearly seven years later, there is still only one “interchange” possible, that to/from the WMR (West Midlands Railways) Cross City service to/ from the WMR Birmingham New Street to Hereford service, and there is only one train an hour in total, on both the WMR and the Cross Country Trains (XC) service which travels south, which passengers from Bromsgrove station can catch.

As I have written before, this is disadvantageous to the economic, environmental and social wellbeing of the people and businesses of the town and the North East Worcestershire district. Why should it be so time consuming and/or expensive to travel to Bristol, Cardiff, Cheltenham, Malvern, Worcester and beyond from Bromsgrove, when there are railway services, potentially easily accessible, on which people can reach those destinations?

Improved services, and awareness of those services, will generate improved business for the two train operating companies. One has only to look at Worcestershire Parkway station, opened three years ago, where the usage is in excess of the forecasts

as people realise where they can travel to, either directly or with only one change of train.

BARRUP will continue and increase its efforts to have the XC Nottingham to Cardiff service, which stops at Parkway station and Cheltenham Spa, to stop also at Bromsgrove, and to have every train on the WMR New Street to Hereford service stopping at Barnt Green.

Compared to the three services a day which stop currently, this would enable people from Alvechurch, Barnt Green and Redditch not only to travel directly, or with one change, to Worcester, Malvern and Hereford, but also to join the southbound XC services at Bromsgrove.

Success will not be easy or quick. BARRUP is dealing with WMR and XC, which have little financial incentives currently to seek more business with new initiatives, and Worcestershire County Council, for which Bromsgrove and North East Worcestershire are a neglected area as far as rail services are concerned, but we shall persevere.

If you would like to add your voice by becoming a member of BARRUP, email memsec@bromsgroverail. org.uk and we will get in touch with you.

Growing on a budget

We are all looking for ways to tighten our belts during these tough times but your growing year does not have to suffer. There are lots of things that can be done to save money and still ensure a bountiful harvest.

Your kitchen contains all sorts of useful vessels that can be used in place of flower pots. As well as saving money it’s also about reusing your waste. Toilet roll inners make great deep pots especially good for peas, beans and sweet peas, promoting a more extensive root system. Stack them together in a growing tray and fill with compost; the beauty of this is that when the time is ready to plant them on you can just sink the whole loo roll into the soil and it will break down.

Yoghurt pots, milk cartons and plastic fruit trays also serve the same purpose, but make sure that you put some holes in the bottom for drainage if necessary. These can all be reused multiple times.

If space is an issue for you try growing potatoes in old compost bags or old style dustbins on your patio; as long as they are deep.

Buying seeds can be costly and add up quite quickly so why not share seeds with friends; plan what you would like to grow between you all. You may be able to find seed swapping groups online which could be worth a look. Some seeds will keep for a couple of years but parsnips are notorious for being unsuccessful after year one so in this case it would be better to invest in new seeds each year.

Look out for special offers on seeds with seed suppliers or garden centres which are often reduced towards the end of the growing year. Try saving your own seeds from tomatoes, beans and annual flowers. Don’t discard those

old sprouting potatoes at the back of the cupboard, give them a chance and plant them, what have you got to lose? Try selecting varieties of vegetables that “cut and come again”, cabbages, lettuce, chard, kale; you can just take the outer leaves as you need them and they’ll continue to produce all season long.

Don’t buy expensive plant supports, if you have a buddleia bush or any that produces good growth each year that needs annual pruning, keep the sturdiest sticks and use them for beans or peas instead of buying bamboo canes, unless you are fortunate to have your own supply of bamboo from your own garden.

Some crops will need protection throughout the season whether against pests, cold or sun. Make use of old clear plastic bottles, cut off the bottom to make a cloche; polythene stretched over homemade hoops, or recycled glass doors and windows can make a cold frame.

Make your own fertiliser, if you have access to nettles, these make a great liquid feed. Steep the leaves in a bucket of water and leave for a couple of weeks, remove any solids and add them to your compost bin if you have one. Dilute the liquid approximately one part to 10 parts water and use fortnightly throughout the growing season. Save your old coffee grounds as this will be beneficial to acid loving plants like blueberries, rhododendrons, azaleas; on the opposite end crushed egg shells will help lower the acidity in your soil.

Prune winter flowering shrubs when they have finished flowering Deadhead your daffodils to stop them going to seed which weakens the bulb for next year

New lease of life for Bromsgrove brooks

The North Worcestershire Water Management team at Bromsgrove District Council have recently been working in partnership with Worcestershire County Council, Catshill & North Marlbrook Parish Council and Worcestershire Wildlife Trust on a project to reduce flood risk and enhance biodiversity along the Millennium Way in Catshill.

This path links Milton Road and Stourbridge Road and is part of a 366 mile Sustrans route linking Reading and Holyhead.

The project has involved restoration of the Barley Brook – a small channel which runs from Shelley Close towards the Battlefield Brook, removal of several blockages in the Battlefield Brook to improve flow and creation of several wetland areas and overflow channels to provide more capacity for flood water. Some piles of brash and deadwood remain on site as these provide important habitats.

The Battlefield Brook is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, including the endangered water vole.

During the spring, the project team and local volunteers will plant more than 1,000 native wildflower and wetland plants and bulbs, install a number of bird boxes and carry out a thorough litter pick of the area.

This work has been part-funded through European Regional Development Funds administered by the county council and The Wildlife Trust as part of their Natural Networks programme.

Where there was previously a blockage, now we have a nice meander & island feature A new wetland pond area - helps store excess water and provide an important habitat The re-established Barley Brook channel; the verge will soon be planted with spring bulbs A new overflow channel to help provide more capacity for flood water and reduce erosion

The power of plant medicine

Nutrients and potent plant compounds in spinach make it one of the healthiest foods on the planet.

Listed below are some of the known health benefits of making spinach a regular part of your diet.

May be anti-cancer - Some epidemiological studies have observed a protective role of spinach consumption when it comes to cancers of the breast, colon, and oesophagus. In a study, with 6,888 cases and 9,428 controls, women ate at least two servings of spinach per week showed 45% lower risk of breast cancer. (Carrots had the same effect.) The anti-cancer effects of spinach may come from its lutein content, a type of carotenoid that provides a yellow pigment to plants. We do know that regular inclusion of spinach in our diet may be cancer-preventive.

May improve metabolic syndromeMetabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions that raise your risk for chronic diseases like heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes. Some of these conditions include high blood pressure and blood lipids, abdominal obesity, and poor blood sugar management. Eating spinach may help prevent some or all of these conditions.

May boost your mood - Some people find that consuming spinach makes them happy. There’s solid scientific evidence that spinach is good for our brains and may actually help boost mood.

In one 2018 study, researchers examined the mental health effects of eating raw versus cooked or canned fruits and vegetables on young adults. They found that eating raw, unprocessed produce predicted significantly better mental health outcomes compared to cooked or canned produce. Spinach was among their top 10 fruits and veggies, which were most strongly related to mental health.

May be good for our brain - Eating spinach and other leafy greens may have other beneficial effects on our brain.

In a study published in the Neurology medical journal, researchers found that green leafy vegetables (including spinach, kale, collards, and lettuce) were positively — and significantly — associated with slower cognitive decline in dementia-free older adults (average age of 81). Even better, these benefits appeared with just one single serving of leafy greens per day. But what’s most impressive? The rate of cognitive decline among those who consumed the most greens, compared to those who consumed the least, was the equivalent of being 11 years younger.

May increase your strength and athletic performance - Spinach contains a phytosteroid called ecdysterone, which may be responsible for some of its strength benefits. Researchers concluded that the performance effects of this naturally occurring steroid hormone were so significant that ecdysterone could warrant an addition to the list of prohibited substances for sports, along with other anabolic agents.

May help support eye health - Spinach contains the antioxidant-rich carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin. These compounds provide pigment to plants and are also responsible for many of their health benefits, particularly to your eyes. Lutein and zeaxanthin have been extensively studied for their association with a reduced risk of cataracts and agerelated macular degeneration.

Easter’s eggs

Whilsttucking into your chocolate Easter egg, take a moment to think about the work to create the many shapes and sizes of eggs in the natural world, from frogspawn to bird eggs.

The eggs of female toads, for example, develop before they hibernate in winter. This means that when they wake the following year, they have to carry their eggs – sometimes up to a mile – to their breeding pond. For birds, it’s estimated that it costs more than 200% of their normal daily energy just to produce one egg. Take the bandit-masked blue tit in your garden as an example. A clutch of blue tit eggs contains more calcium than the mother’s entire skeleton!

By the time you read this, birds will have been pairing up, mating and building nests. Timing your breeding season with the availability of food for chicks is crucial but hard. Adult birds have just come through winter and need time to build their own energy levels. Then, as our climate changes, there is a risk that hatching chicks miss the boom of caterpillar or other food emergence. Let’s take another look at that blue tit family for a moment – each chick requires around 100 caterpillars a day and each blue tit nest has about 10 chicks; that’s a lot of food. For migrating birds like willow warbler and cuckoo, a timing mismatch can be even more devastating. Once you know this, you realise just how important it is for us to protect and create diverse green spaces and gardens to ensure that our wildlife survives and thrives.

Bird eggshells are made of calcium carbonate so they’re basically white. White is easy for a predator to spot so birds use two different pigments – one derives from bile and provides blue and green shading, the other derives from blood and creates spots and patterns. Birds that nest in trees and hedgerows, like dunnock and song thrush, often have blue or green eggs. Birds that nest in dark holes, such

as blue tits and nuthatches, have pale eggs so the parents can see them. Birds that nest on the ground, such as avocet or skylark, often have brown or speckled eggs for maximum camouflage. Guillemots, a coastal bird, nest in large colonies and their eggs are very differently marked so that each pair can recognise their own egg.

It’s important not to disturb breeding birds (and it’s illegal to take their eggs) so please keep dogs on a lead and stick to paths when you’re out for a walk; birds don’t just nest high in trees and may abandon their young if they consider a threat is too large. If a bird is ‘shouting’ at you as you stop to pause or have a picnic, they’re concerned about their nest so move on and let them continue protecting and feeding their young. At home, think about when and how you cut your hedges and tidy your garden – wait until late summer when chicks have fledged. Society’s 36th annual lecture to feature the Housman family

The evening presentation will take place on Wednesday 19th April at 7.30pm in Routh Concert Hall at Bromsgrove School, and will be live streamed. The lecture is held in conjunction with the Housman Society to celebrate their 50th Anniversary.

Local historian and Housman enthusiast Julian Hunt will present a lecture featuring the Housman family and their connections with Bromsgrove. The Rev Robert Housman first came to the town in the 1790s to visit his brother-in-law, John Adams, manager of the worsted mill in Watt Close.

In the 1830s, Adams, then living at Perry Hall, helped his nephew, the Rev Thomas Housman, to become the first curate of Catshill. On Adams’ death in 1858, the Rev Thomas’ son, Edward Housman, moved into Perry Hall and soon became a leading figure in Bromsgrove and a popular speaker at Court Leet dinners.

Edward’s eldest son, the poet Alfred Edward Housman, grew up at Perry Hall, as did his brothers and sisters, including Laurence and Clemence, whose major role in the campaign for women’s suffrage is only now being fully appreciated.

Julian Hunt was born in Romsley, spent his career in research and has been a member of the Bromsgrove Society Executive Committee for many years. He joined the staff of Birmingham Reference Library in 1968 and later worked as a local studies librarian in Oldham and Aylesbury.

Julian has written several local history books and most recently co-authored Bromsgrove, the Story of a Market Town with Jenny Townshend. His father, Joseph Hunt, founded the Housman Society with John Pugh in 1973, passing on his interest in the Housman family to his son. Julian is currently editor of the Housman Society Journal.

Tickets to attend are £7.50 to include a drink after the presentation, or £5.00 for a live stream link, available online from www.bromsgrove-school. co.uk/boxoffice . Tickets to attend are also available from Foto Factory, 123 High Street, Bromsgrove (cash only please). The Society Book Stall will be open at the event (cash sales prefered). Further details are on the Bromsgrove Society’s website www.bsoc.co.uk and social media @ BromsgroveSoc.

This year’s annual lecture, hosted by the Bromsgrove Society and presented by Julian Hunt, will celebrate “The Housman Family Story”.

A much-loved community

Bromsgrove has played a key part in my life for many years. I worked at the Bromsgrove Advertiser as a reporter and sports editor for 13 years and was fortunate to cover Bromsgrove Rovers FC during the most successful period in their history.

When my former Advertiser colleague Michele Ford asked me to join the Completely Bromsgrove team as writer and sub editor, along with page designer and another ex-colleague Matt Walton, what else could I say but yes?

I’m proud of be part of this bighearted community magazine and to have witnessed at first hand its growth and burgeoning reputation in the district as a publication to trust and enjoy.

I was also honoured to pay tribute to my late Advertiser colleaguesand friends - Pete Lammas and Alan Wallcroft and to write about projects I’ve been involved in such as the tourism guide Welcome to Worcestershire. Let me tell you a story, which I’m sure Michele is happy for me to share. Just before the UK entered its first lockdown in March 2020.

resource to trust & enjoy

Michele and I had a conversation about the future of the magazine and whether she should keep it going during the pandemic.

My answer was positive and I’m pleased she agreed as the Covid edition of the magazine remains one of my favourite issues, full of good advice from a wide range of organisations and heartwarming articles about people of all ages who were helping and supporting others in their neighbourhood at possibly the toughest times in their lives.

At a time when people were unable to leave their homes other than for a short exercise period, the magazine

proved to be both a comfort and a reminder that better times lay ahead.

Since then, Completely Bromsgrove has gone from strength to strength, attracting more advertisers and contributors.

Every month, readers can look forward to a wide range of features on local business, history, eating out, the environment, charities, sport, district council initiatives and motoring plus movies and musical events.

Long may it continue – and long may I be a part of the magazine’s ongoing success story.

Some highlights from the past few years

Since April 2018 Completely Bromsgrove has been reporting on local and national events and to celebrate our milestone 50th issue we thought we would share some of the memories with you.

In issues 1 and 49 we featured the 30th and 35th anniversary of the Bromsgrove branch of Blood Cancer UK for campaigning and fundraising.

During this period, the group, which was formerly called Leukaemia Research and Bloodwise, has raised an amazing £1,142,701 for research into blood cancers.

In issue 5 we helped celebrate 50 years of Worcestershire Wildlife Trust honouring a local hero and one of their founding fathers, Fred Fincher MBE. He lived in Dodford for almost 60 years and not only helped to establish Worcestershire Wildlife Trust in 1968, he also donated what became our very first nature reserve. Earlier this year I was lucky enough to join the committees of our Bromsgrove and Wyre Forest local supporter groups at Randan Wood as they unveiled a plaque to Fred’s memory.

Issue 9 contained a fascinating article on the popular television programe Back In Time For School presented by Sarah Cox and Polly Russell that was shown on BBC2 earlier in 2019. Fifteen pupils and their teachers embarked on an extraordinary time-travelling adventure as they fast-forwarded through more than 100 years of school life. One of the pupils in the show was local boy Kaden, who lives in Aston Fields.

In issue 14 we were able to run the news that after 38 years working at Bromsgrove Library, and Mobile Library Pat Tansell had placed her last book on the shelf and taken early retirement to concentrate on other interests.

In our special Covid-19 issue we shared the news that Fairfield, Wildmoor & Stoneybridge residents had been supporting each other during the current Coronavirus crisis, with contact telephone calls, shopping for the vulnerable and feel good activities.

More highlights from the past few years

Leighton, a baker at Asda’s town centre store, was taken by ambulance on 13th April 2019 to the Alexandra Hospital. He was diagnosed with the virus and his lungs had exploded. He spent 59 days in intensive care and while he was being given oxygen through his throat following a tracheostomy his wife Emma received a phone call at 3.30am to say she had permission to go to the hospital to say her goodbyes.

Seventy-nine days after being admitted, he defied all the odds by walking out of the hospital. While he is still very weak, he is certainly a fighter and is loving being back home with his family.

In issue 39 we highlighted the fact the nation was mourning the death of the Duke of Edinburgh. Staff and students of South Bromsgrove High School reflected on his impact within the community of the School.

In 1956, Prince Phillip introduced the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, which is a voluntary non-competitive programme of activities, chosen by the participant, at one of three levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold.

The award has been a central part of the extra-curricular provision at South Bromsgrove High since the early 1990s. It grew substantially under the leadership of Paul Copeland, who went on to become the headteacher, and Will Thomas, who still volunteers as an expedition assessor, despite leaving the school in 2002.

Issue 40 contained the sad story of the end of the popular 144 route. Bus users were rocked by the decision by operator First Worcester to terminate the iconic 144 service at Catshill from the start of May 2022.

Issue 42 featured a pullout special that showcased the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with a host of photos from the local celebrations on that grand occasion.

Finally Issue 45 we reported on Her Majesty The Queen’s life between April 1926 and September 2022 with a pullout souvenir special.

The Superb oozes

Sleek as a silk suit and as cool as a dip in an ice lake on a distant planet moon. From its appealingly styled frontal looks to its capacious interior, this is a car designed to deliver; but always with a smile.

Indeed, rivals in the market sector might suspect that the Superb’s appearance conveys something of a knowing smirk of superiority. It seems to say “I don’t just look better than you. I am better.”

This is the sort of car you are eager to drive. After all, who wouldn’t want to sit behind the wheel. At last! A load carrying economical mile eater of an estate car that doesn’t resemble a contemporary artist’s impression of a dumpy donkey. The Superb Sportline estate looks the epitome of a classy and stylish carriage. Never did ‘utility’ look quite so swish. This large estate oozes all round appeal. As a long distance load carrier for £39,736 it yields nothing to more expensive rivals. At the same time, owners will be gratified at the fuel efficiency and low emissions available by the very latest Skoda diesel technology. In today’s environmentally conscious world it remains the case that roughly the same proportion of estate drivers choose diesel as the percentage of the

electorate who voted for something beginning with B and ending in ‘way out’, mesdames et messieurs. Until such a time as cars are utterly revolutionised in all manner of ways, we must recognise that we are where we are and that modern diesels provide a sensible deal for an all round clean economy.

The 150PS 2.0 TDI power pack combined with the industry leading seven speed DSG automatic gearbox with its ‘normal, eco and sport’ modes brings ultra-impressive economy of well over 50mpg (I got over 60 mpg on a long run) in the service of extraordinary load carrying capacity.

Interior space is cleverly disposed to maximise convenience. You might not need a satnav to navigate the load area but when you see the size of it, the thought does occur.

34 Completely Bromsgrove

all-round appeal

Seats fold easily to enable increased load capacity and a remote rear seat folding device is available. For me, user appeal is enhanced owing to Skoda’s sensible subtlety in supplying lots of devices, cubby holes and crannies essential for storing those little necessities one needs to take along to survive when venturing forth.

Although you can certainly pack a lot into the Superb, it’s not the sort of car chosen by those who follow the pack. The Sportline model boasts enhanced roadholding and performance capabilities of up to around 135 mph - making it the model option to consider for drivers keen to enjoy extra road responsiveness. Put it into ‘sport’ and....whoosh! All that torque makes for easy overtakes.

A planned trip to East Anglia to attend the opening ceremony of a restored windmill seemed to me the ideal ‘MacGuffin’ - in Alfred Hitchcock’s phrase - for an errant knight of the road keen to indulge in a quest. I needed a companion, so local historian and enthusiast Sandy Pincher

volunteered to accompany me. His usual mode of transport was Wagner, a famous Polish coach company, so I made sure that the eight-speaker stereo was blasting out the Ride of The Valkyries. He wasn’t amused.

To silence his complaint, I listed some of the safety features. I told him that no number of galloping Valkyries would induce this car to wobble - not with its stability control. Airbags everywhere would puff up like magic in the event of peril, while ultra-competent suspension would trounce terrible terrain.

For anyone questing for luxury motoring but never at the expense of practicality, the frugal yet fashionable diesel Superb Sportline Estate will deliver a big bunch of goodies.

Nearing our destination, I looked out across the flatlands and there, proud on the horizon, the windmill seemed to be waving a greeting. For technically minded readers, windmill sails are driven by pure wind - one of the ‘renewables’ that just keeps on going. Skoda aren’t quite there yet but they’re getting closer by the minute.

A pedestrianised high

On 23rd April 1983 Bromsgrove High Street’s pedestrianised area was officially opened, marking a significant change to the centuries old thoroughfare, which had been traffic free for three years.

The half a mile stretch of High Street with its narrow pavements was the route of the A38. It followed an ancient route that was always busy with traders, travellers, and residents. From at least Roman times Droitwich salt was carried through on its way north.

In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the High Street coaching inns, such as The George and The Golden Cross, provided hospitality for travellers on long distance journeys, with yards behind to accommodate the horses. A freight carrier with a network from Manchester to Bristol was based in the town. Bromsgrove was at the crossroads of two important transport routes.

By the late 1890 multi-national stores had shops in the High Street. Woolworths arrived in 1930 and by the 1980s the town boasted a number of national retail stores including

Currys, Mothercare, Our Price Records and Tesco. Independent family run businesses included Baylis selling furniture, Dawes menswear and Rainscourt’s delicatessen.

A one-way system using St. John Street and Worcester Road was introduced in March 1980. Traffic was prohibited from using the High Street and Church Street except to allow disabled access and essential loading and unloading. The A38 Eastern Bypass, which was first proposed in 1938, opened in May the following year, taking some through traffic away from the town centre.

street for forty years!

The old road surface and pavements were dug up and paving bricks laid in early in 1982 as part of a £160,000 scheme to make the High Street more attractive for pedestrians. By May, the surface was crumbling so further work was stopped whilst an investigation was carried out by the District Council and the supplier.

The official opening of the trafficfree area was attended by Miss United Kingdom Della Dolan who arrived in a vintage Rolls Royce accompanied by the Chairman of the Council Tom Dilkes and the Chief Executive George Badham.

During the morning Ms Dolan unveiled the ‘Dyrad and Boar’ statue created in fibreglass by Terry Simons using moulds used by the Bromsgrove Guild to create the original work. The statue originally stood outside the Post Office at 117 High Street. It moved to its present location at the junction of High Street and Church Street in 2014 during public realm works in the High Street and the Townscape Heritage Initiative Project. The Bromsgrove Society have supported the restoration project by the District Council and are working on new information boards to celebrate the Bromsgrove Guild and detail the history of the statue.

A collection of photos and history of High Street shops can be found on the Bromsgrove Society website at www.bsoc.co.uk and in the Society’s recent book Bromsgrove: The Story of a Market Town.

Chicken and mushroom pie with mashed potato topping

Pie time! An easy family pie with chicken and mushrooms: Kikkoman gives this traditional dish an unexpectedly delicious twist

Serves 4

Method:

1. Peel potatoes and cut them into walnut-sized pieces, place them in a pot of cold water and boil until tender.

2. In the meantime, rinse and dry the celeriac, orange, thyme, and parsnip. Peel the parsnip and celeriac and cut them into hazelnut-sized pieces. Peel the onion and cut into strips, cut each mushroom into six pieces.

3. Sauté the cut vegetables in a pan with 5 tbsp of vegetable oil until brown.

4. Meanwhile, cut the chicken into strips and add this to the vegetables. Fry briefly, then reduce the temperature. Pour in the orange juice and 10 tbsp of Kikkoman soy sauce.

5. Season with the orange zest, pepper, thyme leaves and grated nutmeg.

6. Mix cornflour with 1 tbsp cold water to thicken the pie filling. Bring everything to the boil again and pour the filling into a baking dish.

7. Preheat the oven to 200°C.

8. Drain the cooked potatoes and return them to the pot on the stove to allow them to steam. Add 150 ml milk, 3 tbsp Kikkoman soy sauce and the butter. Mash the potatoes until they have a creamy consistency.

9. Add the mashed potato to the top of the filling in the baking dish making sure to cover the filling completely and sprinkle with cheese. Bake on the middle shelf for approx. 15 minutes.

Overwhelming public support for Artrix plan

At a Bromsgrove District Council meeting on February 22nd, the Liberal Democrats proposed an alternative budget which would have seen council tax increase by a further 20 pence a month for the average band D household to fund a rescue plan for Artrix.

We recognise completely the severity of the cost of living crisis but we believe 20 pence represents a fair balance between saving Artrix and the recognising the financial pressures on taxpayers. The lowest earners are exempt from paying council tax.

The Lib Dem proposal would have raised £92,000 a year for Artrix. This is not a pie in the sky figure as some have suggested. The district council used to fund Artrix to the tune of £61,000 per annum before the subsidy was withdrawn.

We were humbled to see our proposal attract such huge support, with many residents attending the meeting, and writing to us or commenting about the plan on social media.

Sadly, the plan did not achieve cross-party support as Labour and the Conservatives voted it down. Certain councillors who are members of the Artrix Holding Trust were unable to take part in the debate, however of those councillors in attendance, only the Lib Dems and independent councillors

voted for the plan and we are grateful to the independents for giving us their support.

The Conservatives argued that it is not their responsibility to decide and it is for the holding trust to come up with a plan instead of the council. Yet this argument is disingenuous.

The majority of the holding trust is made up of councillors, Bromsgrove District Council owns the land on which Artrix sits, the council built Artrix in the first place and the council used to subsidise it.

The Conservatives have still not explained where they expect the money to come from if the holding trust does produce a viable plan, prolonging uncertainty over Artrix’s future. Our view remains that funding should have been made available transparently as part of the 2023-24 budget setting process.

With no council funding on the table, it is hard to see how it can now reopen this year but we still believe it is not too late to save Artrix, and the Lib Dems will continue to campaign for it to reopen as a community arts centre as soon as possible.

Thanks again for your support. Working together we have demonstrated the determination of the people of this district to see Artrix open its doors once again, and this cannot be ignored.

We would like to say a sincere thank you to Completely Bromsgrove readers and all the local residents who gave us their overwhelming support for our plan to save Artrix.

Malvern drama is a family affair

Caroline Quentin (Life Begins, Dickensian, Men Behaving Badly) stars as Mrs Warren and Rose Quentin (Doc Martin) as Vivie. They are joined by Simon Shepherd (Peak Practice, Casualty, Chancer) as Sir George Crofts, Matthew Cottle (The Windsors, Game On) as Reverend Gardener, Stephen RahmanHughes (EastEnders) as Mr Praed and Peter Losasso as Frank Gardner. The director is Anthony Banks.

What is Mrs Warren’s profession? Mrs Warren’s daughter Vivie has never really known much about her mother. A sensible young woman, she has enjoyed a comfortable upbringing, a Cambridge education, a generous monthly allowance and now has ambitions to go into Law.

Is it conceivable that her privilege and respectability has been financed from the profits of the world’s oldest profession? How will Vivie react when she finds out the startling truth about her mother’s business empire and that freedom comes at an emotional price?

Shaw’s acid test of a mother-daughter relationship is one of his wittiest and most provocative plays. Written in 1894 but banned for 30 years by a Lord

Chamberlain who found it “immoral and improper” , Mrs Warren’s Profession is a ripe attack on English hypocrisy and its “fashionable morality”.

Caroline Quentin has twice won the British Comedy Award for best TV comedy actress and a special recognition award at the National Television Awards. She has recently starred in Jack Absolute Flies Again at the National Theatre and played Wes in the new Sky series The Larazus Project. Caroline took part in the 2020 season of Strictly Come Dancing with dance partner Johannes Radebe. She has performed on stage at the RSC, National Theatre, Bristol Old Vic, Chichester Festival Theatre and in the West End.

Dramatist, literary critic and socialist spokesman, Bernard Shaw was also a freethinker, a supporter of women’s rights and an advocate of equality of income. His prolific literary output also includes Pygmalion, Arms and the Man, Candida, Man and Superman, Heartbreak House and Saint Joan, for which he won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1925.

Tickets are available from the Malvern Theatres box office on 01684 892277.

Anewproduction of Mrs Warren’s Profession starring mother and daughter Caroline and Rose Quentin comes to Malvern Theatres from April 11th to 15th as part of a UK tour.

“Providing families with a reasonably priced day out has always been one of our top priorities. This year we believe that it is even more important to offer all families the opportunity to enjoy a day out together,” said Sarah Green, Funtopia director.

“We’re pleased to be offering our popular autism friendly sessions at every Funtopia this year,” added Sam Harrison, event manager.

“These sessions are specifically designed to allow children with autism the opportunity to visit Funtopia in a more relaxed and suitable setting. We’ve found that these children can often be forgotten and don’t always get the opportunity to visit events. We hope that they will be popular with the local community.”

Snacks and meals are on offer throughout the day at the Fun-Food Court. Visitors are also welcome to bring their own food and picnics if they prefer.

All tickets are purchased on the gate (autism friendly sessions can be booked online) and there’s no need to pre-book. Sales open at 10am every event day. Tickets are priced at: Under 90cm free, over 90cm £10, adults £2.50. Autism friendly session: Under 90cm FREE, over 90cm £5, adults free.

Fairfield Flicks’ April programme begins on Thursday, April 13th at 2pm with The Rising Hawk: Battle for the Carpathians (12), a 2019 Ukrainian-American historical action film based on the historical fiction book Zakhar Berkut by Ukrainian writer and poet Ivan Franko.

During the 13th century, the Mongol Empire had grown to the largest the world had ever known. Its armies now laid siege to much of Eastern Europe and a Ukrainian village fights for freedom in the frontier landscape of the Carpathian Mountains against the Mongolian invaders.

A subtitled screening of the BAFTA multiaward-winning dark tragicomedy film The Banshees of Inisherin (15) will take place on Friday, April 14th at 2pm. Set on a remote island off the west coast of Ireland, the film follows lifelong friends Pádraic and Colm, who find themselves at an impasse when Colm unexpectedly puts an end to their friendship. A stunned Pádraic, aided by his sister Siobhán and troubled young islander Dominic, endeavours to repair the relationship, refusing to take no for an answer. But Pádraic’s repeated efforts only strengthen his former friend’s resolve and when Colm delivers a desperate ultimatum, events swiftly escalate, with shocking consequences.

Two-time Academy Award nominee Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman, An Education) and Emmy nominee Zoe Kazan (The Plot Against America, The Big Sick) star as New York Times reporters Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor, who together broke one of the most important stories in a generation, one which shattered decades of silence around the subject of sexual assault in Hollywood and impelled a shift in American culture that continues to this day. She Said (15) will be screened on Wednesday, April 19th at 7.30pm.

truth, friendship and life

Bill Nighy tackles life and death in the exquisitely sad drama Living (12A) on Wednesday, April 26th at 2.30pm. This is the story of an ordinary man, reduced by years of oppressive office routine to a shadow existence, who at the eleventh hour makes a supreme effort to turn his dull life into something wonderful.

Returning to Fairfield Flicks on Saturday, April 22nd at 8pm, after wowing the audience in 2022, is Anne-Marie Allen .

This Birmingham-based singer-songwriter has a distinct vocal tone which captivates audiences who enjoy soul, funk, folk, and blues with a hint of tribal, punk, and psychedelic. Anne-Marie’s unique musical style does not confine itself to one specific genre. Her lyrics are honest about the human condition, yet her music has an upbeat vibe to keep audiences smiling.

Over the years Anne-Marie has collaborated with a wide range of artists, DJ’s, producers, and MCs, performing gigs in the UK and abroad across various venues. Anne-Marie is currently performing her gigs with Dominic James Hyde on guitar, occasional brass, and wind sections.

Supporting Anne-Marie will be Ben Okafor, an internationally acclaimed artist whose forte is the powerful use of his lyrical integrity and command over his multiple talents in music and the arts to communicate and educate. Ben is respected and renowned amongst his peers in his native Nigeria, USA, Europe and beyond.

(12A)

There’s a theory that modest intoxication opens our minds to the world around us, diminishing our problems and increasing our creativity. Heartened by that theory, Martin (Mads Mikkelsen) and three of his friends, all tired high school teachers, embark on an experiment to uphold a constant level of intoxication throughout the workday. In this Oscar winning Danish comedy, things get just a little bit out of hand. (Denmark 2020) (English Subtitles)

In the West End of 1950s London, a murder interrupts a smash hit play. When world-weary Inspector Stoppard (Sam Rockwell) and eager rookie Constable Stalker (Saoirse Ronan) take on the case, the two find themselves thrown into a puzzling whodunit within the glamorously sordid theatre underground, investigating the mysterious homicide at their own peril. A cracking yarn with its tongue firmly in its cheek. (UK 2022)

Consensus Opera returns with A Very Curious Poison

Following the success of last year’s “Cosi Fan Tutte” performance by Consensus Opera, the Bromsgrove Society and Bromsgrove Court Leet have again joined together to host the group’s new production.

Written by Tim Johnson, “A Very Curious Poison” is set to the glorious music of Gilbert and Sullivan’s operettas. This new murder mystery comedy, performed by Consensus Opera, is set to entertain, amuse and delight the audience.

Picture the scene, it’s the 1930s in the sleepy English village of Little Piffling where six wellheeled guests have assembled at Piffling Hall, all bearing mysterious invitations and each one hiding a dark secret. Soon, polite civility is shattered by the mysterious death of Lady Helena Handcart, poisoned by an unknown hand. Is Madame Eva Chestikov really a Russian émigré? What is Mr E Eckerslike, a rich industrialist, really doing in this rural backwater? Is Sir Preston de Bagot really as stupid as he looks? Can the guests unravel the mystery before the killer strikes again? Meanwhile, the servants have been sent home and the fog is slowly rising…

The performance stars many of the same cast from last year’s production, including local, wellknown singer David Coulson. The evening is hosted by the Bromsgrove Society and Bromsgrove Court Leet in the New Guesten Hall at Avoncroft

Museum of Buildings on Wednesday 26th April at 7.30pm in a café style setting. Guests are invited to bring their own drinks and nibbles to enjoy (full details will be sent to ticket holders in advance of the show).

To enjoy this wonderful evening in the fabulous setting of Guesten Hall you can obtain tickets, priced at £15 person, online from https:// CuriousPoison.eventbrite.co.uk (eventbrite booking fee applies) or from Decanter Spirit on Bromsgrove High Street (cash only please).

There will be a raffle held during the interval and all funds raised from the evening will be split between the Bromsgrove Society and the Court Leet Charity Fund to support local organisations.

Celebrating 50 years of Jerusalem Joy

After a successful and joyful event at Bromsgrove Baptist Church last July, when Roger and Mary Jones celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, the couple will return to the same venue on April 22nd to mark the 50th anniversary of the first musical Roger ever wrote.

Award-winning musician Roger was born in Birmingham and trained at the Birmingham School of Music. He then spent 16 years at Aston Manor School in Birmingham teaching music, and eventually became head of lower school.

It was whilst Roger was working as head of music at Aston Manor School that he found the choir were running out of suitable material to perform at the Easter concert. Roger decided that rather than scouting around to try and find suitable songs, he would write some of his own Easter material.

Roger did not know this at the time, but the decision to write these Easter songs was the first small step onto a ladder that was to lead towards writing his very first musical, the musical we now know as Jerusalem Joy. This was the first of many musicals, 24 in total (and counting).

The musical gained national recognition and was performed on BBC radio and TV, featuring as a complete programme on BBC’s Songs of Praise.

Michael Shoesmith, head of the BBC’s religious broadcasting at the time was delighted with the music, but worried that such modern material wouldn’t resonate with the audience’s more traditional tastes. He decided he’d play it on BBC Radio 2’s Sunday Half Hour regardless.

Expecting a flood of complaints, Michael instead received hundreds of letters requesting copies of the music. Jerusalem Joy had made its national radio debut to a very positive reception. It was then broadcast internationally and reached as far afield as southern Africa where it was performed on Southern Rhodesian television.

Jerusalem Joy is still as popular today as it was 50 years ago, and the musical is performed all over the UK, as well as other parts of the world.

If you would like to see the performance of Jerusalem Joy, you can book tickets online at www.cmm.org.uk/shop/index.php?id=jjmiad

Nervous times at Sporting

It’sbeen a difficult few weeks for The Rouslers, picking up just one win in the last six matches. However, most of the points lost have been to teams at the top of the league whilst clubs lower down have not done much better than Sporting. At the time of writing they sit 13th in the league and just a few more points will keep them well away from the relegation zone.

Opportunities for young cricketers at Avoncroft

Junior cricket will be returning to Avoncroft in April and, for the first time, Croft have entered girls sides into both under nine and under 11 county competitions.

With the success of the All Stars cricket programme, which helps both boys and girls experience their first taste of cricket, the number of girls joining the sport has grown massively over the last three years and Avoncroft are excited to be extending our offer for girls cricket this year.

In addition to our girls programme, Croft will continue to offer mixed cricket for all ages from five to 15. All Stars cricket returns for its fourth season, targeted at five to eight year olds looking to learn and develop some basic cricket skills.

The programme is administered nationally, with a number of local clubs offering sessions. For more information, and to book onto the sessions that start in early May, search for All Stars cricket on the internet.

Avoncroft also offers its own softball coaching for under nines, building upon the basic skills developed in All Stars, before transitioning on to hardball cricket from under tens (year ten onwards).

All training takes place on a Friday evening, with the first session planned for April 21st. Training is open to both current and new members – for more information and to register, please contact Paul Athey at paul.athey@nhs.net

We’re particularly interest in hearing from girls who want to try cricket for the first time – no previous experience is required.

On the adult side of things, the First XI kick off their Division Three campaign against local rivals Himbleton at Croft’s Stoke Heath ground on April 15th, with the Second and Third XI starting two weeks later.

If you have an hour or two to spare on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon over the course of the summer, anyone is welcome to pop by, soak up the sun (hopefully) and enjoy a perfect example of English village cricket right on our doorstep.
