Welcome to the early summer edition of Completely Bromsgrove.
May I start by saying a huge thank you to you all for the overwhelming response to the first edition. We have received so many lovely comments and plenty of competition entries, it’s great to see so many of you enjoying your new local magazine. In this edition, Hanbury Countryside Show, which is a truly great day out and just on our doorstep, is offering VIP tickets to this years’ show. We’ll be keeping our fingers crossed that the sun shines for them on the 7th July and for the future lucky winners of this great competition. I also spent a lovely morning chatting to the inspiring Devon C Ford. A Bromsgrove author who selfpublished his own books and has gone on to become an international best seller. Head over to page 6 to read my fascinating interview with him. Avoncroft Cricket Clubs, very own Rod Braithwaite, was recently presented with the ‘Norman Sharp’ award for a lifetime’s contribution to the club. Bromsgrove International Best Seller, Author and selfpublisher: Devon C Ford I
recently had the pleasure of spending a very interesting morning with Bromsgrove author and self-publisher, Devon C Ford. Over coffee in one of our local coffee shops, I spoke to Devon about his life story, inspirations and the stories he writes to help free his mind.
Aged 35, Devon has achieved a lot in his life already. Devon’s self-published beginnings caused quite a stir in the publishing world and resulted in contracts with Podium Publishing for Audible, narrated by R.C. Bray (The Martian, Expeditionary Force, Arisen), before a publishing deal for Kindle and paperbacks with Vulpine Press. But the journey to his writing success was not a simple one. After attending North Bromsgrove High School, Devon joined Her Majesty’s Prison Service (HMPS), where he began his career working as a prison officer at 19 years of age – before moving onto the police service by 23. As a serving police officer, Devon relished police life, getting great satisfaction from knowing he was helping to keep our streets safe and giving back to the community. However, it was also this role that would bring Devon, one of his greatest life tests and life-changing moments. One day in 2010, when on duty at an English Defence League (EDL) rally in Stoke, Devon’s life changed in a flash. Whilst trying to control the disruptive and aggressive crowd, Devon was struck and physically attacked by protesters, resulting in Devon being diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). One can only begin to image how devastating this must have been, especially at the young age of 27.

Devon spent three months off work. Somewhat hastily, Devon returned to public duty, but it soon became apparent that things weren’t quite as they had once been. The effects of the life-changing incident had become apparent. Devon eventually made the difficult decision to resign from the police force and focus on his recovery. The attack left Devon with many symptoms, including insomnia and a very overactive mind. With so many questions, thoughts and images whirring around, Devon would often find himself overwhelmed with mental stimulation. Most mornings at 3 am, Devon would be forced to get out of bed and pen down his thoughts – attempting to clear his new mind, of its overactivity. A mix of trauma and over-stimulation caused by the attack, these thoughts were not always positive ones. However, Devon managed to take the impact of his injuries and turn them into something positive and inspiring. Devon turned his writings into fictional idealisms and selfpublished his first series, After It Happened, (comprised of three books: Survival, Humanity, Society) in April 2016. This was shortly followed by Hope (July 2016) and Sanctuary (December 2016). The series concluded with the release of Rebellion, published in June 2017. With an average writing day sometimes covering 14 hours, Devon can write a novel within 16 days! Which by anyone’s estimations are some going and has seen the author publish numerous books in the time it would take many authors to publish one or two.
Despite Devon’s quick and focused writing style, this has had no impact on the imaginative quality of his story writing abilities. Devon’s first series saw the Bromsgrove author reach International Best Seller status, making the top 10 sellers listings in four countries; Australia, USA, Canada and here, in the UK! It is no surprise, therefore, that Devon has gained an extensive global following, with fans messaging him from across the world on a daily basis. Undoubtedly, Devon lives and breathe his writings but it appears his fans do too! During our conversation, Devon told me that one of the best compliments he has ever received in regard to his work, came from a couple who went on holiday to the South of France, specifically to discover places that had inspired two of Devon’s books. In October 2017, Devon undertook his first significant solo trip, post-accident. Driving on his own to and around the South of France, staying with welcoming families who he had not previously met and making new friends along his way, this trip inspired Devon to write the last two books in his first series, Sanctuary and Rebellion. Devon explained that all of the characters and locations used in his writings are inspired by real people, places and events but the trip to the South of France, took place during a significant stage in Devon’s recovery. Making this couple’s trip even more meaningful for Devon. Devon explained, “I created the fictional place of‘ Sanctuary’ by visiting a few places in the Catalan region of Southern France. The main town is based on a place called Villefranchede-Conflent, a walled town where two rivers converge, and high above that (via the long stone staircase described in the books), is Fort Liberia.” Another significant landmark in the book, the Watchtower “was taken from a place called Sahorre, which was another mountain I decided to climb”.
Whilst on their holiday, the couple visited all of the places that inspired Devon, previously contacting him asking for his advice as to where they should visit to trace his steps. It was so interesting listening to Devon’s life journey so far, and Completely Bromsgrove would like to wish Devon all the success for the future. Bromsgrove Connections - Rotary Club, St John’s Church & Cupitt Jeweller I t may seem to be an unusual connection, but when the team from Friends of St John’s Church met up with their counterparts at the Rotary Club of Bromsgrove, the connection became very apparent.
The Rotary Club had made a very generous donation of £5,000 to pay for the emergency repairs to the spire at St John’s Church in Bromsgrove. When the group met to take photos to record the occasion, the Rotary president Amal Rampal, was wearing the official Chain of Office. The beautiful, hand crafted enamelled jewel badge hanging from the chain had been made by Cupitt Jeweller and contained a wonderful picture of St John’s Church in a view from Sander’s Park. One of the special traits of Bromsgrove is the connections between - the people and groups through the age. This connection is an excellent example of that. The connection between Rotary and St John’s has been a long standing one. When the club heard about the emergency repairs on the spire they generously donated the funds required. During a routine inspection of the spire, steeplejacks had discovered a crack in the stonework at the very top of the spire, which they repaired as a matter of urgency. Rotary Chairman Amal Rampal said “When we found out about the need at St John’s we didn’t hesitate to give our full support. St John’s is the oldest, and possibly most important building in Bromsgrove and the Rotary Club is delighted to help.” Friends of St John’s Chairman Jo Slade said “We are extremely grateful to the Rotary Club of Bromsgrove for this generous donation. If you look up to the top of the spire you can see eight steel straps around the top. These have been put in place as a precautionary measure and once the full spire survey is completed we will know what the long term restoration requirement will be.” She continued “We were thrilled to see the beautiful enamelled painting of St John’s on the President’s Chain of Office, and most excited to learn that it had been made locally by Cupitt Jeweller. The church building has been a place of gathering and connections for so many generations, and the Friends are keen to keep these connections alive.” Friends of St John’s are passionate about Bromsgrove’s heritage. Through community based events, Friends raise funds for the ongoing maintenance, restoration and improvements of Bromsgrove’s landmark and historic church building. The Nailers’ Village C
atshill, one of Bromsgrove’s most popular suburbs, was once a village in its own right. Originally this was an agricultural area. Later, market gardening, weaving and button making developed as cottage industries. But it is for nailmaking that the village is best known.
Nailmaking is thought to have emerged in Bromsgrove and neighbouring villages in the late 1600s. The trade flourished until, at its height in the 1840s and 50s, the town produced a staggering four billion nails a year and Catshill was at its heart. It was a hard life, even by the standards of the time. The nailmaker, his wife and often children too toiled at their craft for up to 16 hours a day, working in hot, cramped conditions. Families of up to eight or ten lived in one-up-one-down cottages with a nailshop attached. Many of these can still be seen. Henry Ince, a Catshill nailer and Methodist preacher, campaigned to improve the nailers’ working conditions and led a strike in 1869. From the 1870s mechanisation brought a decline in nailmaking but in Catshill it clung on well into the 20th century. Catshill was part of Bromsgrove parish until 1844, when it became a parish in its own right. The Rev. Thomas Housman, grandfather of the poet Alfred E. Housman, was the first vicar at the newly-built Christ Church. Several Housman relatives are buried there. A group called the Primitive Methodists are thought to have rented a room in Barley Mow Lane around 1831 before establishing their own meeting house in Golden Cross Lane. This was one of four non-conformist chapels in the village. The village had its own collection of surnames – Rutter, Wilkes, Norbury, Chance, Juggins, Emus, Wagstaff, Kings – and most of the original villagers seemed to be related to each other somehow! The fascinating history of Catshill is one of six subjects on offer at this year’s Bromsgrove Society Summer School from 10th to 12th July. Now in its eighth year, the Summer School celebrates Bromsgrove’s rich industrial, architectural and cultural history. Other topics this year are: Laurence Housman (the poet’s brother); Bromsgrove’s 20th century architecture; the motor industry entrepreneurs Lord Austin and Lord Nuffield; the Redditch needle industry; and a historical comparison of Bromsgrove and Stourbridge. Escape & enjoy the water... ”Evidence shows that spending time by water makes us happier”, says David Morgan from the Canal & River Trust. The Trust is the charity that cares for 2,000 miles of inland waterways across England and Wales, including the Worcester & Birmingham Canal which weaves its way through Bromsgrove. The charity is now on a mission to show how these former industrial waterways, which are free green spaces on people’s doorsteps, can improve the wellbeing of millions of people by making them happier and healthier. At over two centuries old the Worcester & Birmingham Canal has been an important part of the community for more than two centuries. But what was originally designed as a transport link for industry, is now a place for people to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and avoid busy polluted main roads. David continues: “The canal has changed so much over the years and it now offers a really unique place to slow down and relax. Our waterways are an amazing historic legacy for us all, but with ever increasing rates of obesity, rising stress and declining mental health, they can play such an impor tant new role in local communities.” The Trust’s research shows that three quarters of towpath visitors say they go to their local canal ‘to get away from it all and clear their head’ and because they are ‘great places to relax and de-stress’.
“This is especially true for the Worcester & Birmingham canal. So whether it’s boating, running, fishing or just a place to watch wildlife, we think the canal offers something for everyone. It’s really a space to escape and enjoy yourself amongst nature.” The charity is also on the lookout for people to join its regular volunteering events, helping to keep the canal and towpath in top condition for the thousands who use it each year. David concludes: “To put it simply: visit for yourself and see what you think. Pattern There is a Current Trend for wallpapering in particular, bold, tropical print and vibrant patterns. Remember, this will make the chosen wall advance towards you and make the room appear smaller. If you decide to do this then to re-set the balance the curtains should be the colour of the other three walls so there is not competition for attention, then use the colours of the wallpaper bravely in cushions and upholstery.

A splash of colour Choosing a colour can be overwhelming so we have made it simple, follow these tips and you can’t go wrong. Colours always look darker at the window with the light behind them, so take a sample of your proposed fabric home with you and hold it up at the edge of the window to see what colour it takes on in your room. Certain colours absorb the light without reflecting it back into the room. Browns, blacks, dark greys aubergines are particularly prone to this, so look at your sample in all types of light – artificial and natural to see how it changes.
Window dressing What better way to dress the windows in your lounge with seriously long curtains? Not only does it give a look of luxury, glamour and elegance, you can create a soft ambiance with drapes in opulent fabrics and lavish prints. If the modern minimalist is more your style, why not consider full length dress curtains which are never drawn, paired with a working roman blind in a co–coordinating fabric within the window recess? This is also a great alternative if full-length curtains are not an option within the space available. The blind will enable privacy when needed and the curtains will add texture to the room. Touch of glamour Use a tactile fabric to accessorise the room with cushions where it will add a touch of glamour and depth. Remember, don’t worry if you are on a tight budget it’s much better to go for a more inexpensive fabric and have a larger quantity than a smaller amount of a more expensive one.
Accessorise Look at the furniture within the room, the shape of it and the colour, this is important when styling. Sofas and upholstery are often in darker colours if you are going to use them these are best used against a paler floor covering or rug for texture. Furniture in darker colours appear to be much bigger than they are and are best used with coloured cushions to liven them up and break up the heaviness. As we have said curtains look darker at the window, however, carpets and flooring are exactly the opposite and look lighter. If you have wood or laminate flooring be careful not to use more wood in the scheme. Coffee tables and occasional furniture will look much better with a painted or lacquer finish rather than wood on wood.

This year’s growth carries next years blooms. 3, Dead head regularly, this will help your perennials to produce more flowers. 4, Midsummer sees the garden at the peak of its glory but remember to water the garden during periods of poor rainfall.
Be the envy of the street with a
Summer Hanging Basket A cascading basket of summer plants is a great way to add a splash of colour at eye level outside your home. They look beautiful, smell lovely and can be planted with a variety of plants that will give you a stunning display that will last right through till the autumn. Now is the time for planting your hanging baskets and ready to put out once the frosts have ended. They are not difficult to make yourself, it’s a bit like a theatre show, you need a centre star for the show, maybe a zonal geranium for a bit of height in the middle or a spiky Cordyline, then the supporting acts around the sides. A couple of Surfina Petunias dramatically cascading down the sides, certainly a trailing Fuchsia and an ivy leaf Geranium then two or three basket plants depending on the size of your basket. I always recommend a 14” basket it will have enough variety of plants to give a stunning summer show. When choosing your plants, choose either cool colours of white, pink and purples together or the hotter colours of the reds, oranges and yellow combinations, they will complement one another and give a balanced look to the basket, alternatively use only a single specimen plant such as Surfina Petunias, Million Bells, Geraniums or Fuchsias for that classic look. Begonias are another favourite perfect for a basket and they have the added benefit of managing with less watering.
What ever you choose always use a good brand of basket or container compost and a little slow release fertiliser. Water retaining gel needs to be added to the compost to help with water retention. Plant your basket up and keep it light in a protected place for a week or so to settle then when all risk of frosts have passed, hang it out in its final position. A good selection of basket plants will be available in most garden centres and nurseries. Wagon House gardens at the Jinney Ring Craft Centre have a good selection of plants to create your own basket or ready made baskets for you to choose from. To be the envy of the street, feed your basket with a liquid fertiliser every 2 weeks and most importantly, water your basket every day. Moisture is the key for a huge display, for once they dry out they are difficult to rehydrate and because the plants get shocked by drought they stop flowering. Remember your basket is relying on you for all its water and nutrient during the summertime, but looked after you will be rewarded with a show stopping performance from a huge basket of colour that may cascade just like the theatre curtain all the way to the floor.

Birding near Bromsgrove T
he serenity of the coast may be miles from the urban hum of Bromsgrove but you don’t have to go far to enjoy some of our seaside wildlife.
Upton Warren Wetland Reserve at Wychbold is a great local birdwatching spot that owes part of its success to the underlying salt deposits that make it attractive to normally coastal birds like avocets. In fact, Upton Warren is home to the UK’s first inland breeding avocets; a pair arrived in 2003 and birds have returned every year since.
There are regular buses to nearby Webbs of Wychbold as well as two car parks just off the A38 – one at the sailing centre (The Flashes) and another a few hundred metres north (The Moors). Visitors must either carry their Wildlife Trust membership card or purchase a day permit (£3.00) from the Trust, volunteers on site or the Boatshack Café.
It’s a great place to visit all-year round and is split into two parts – saline pools at The Flashes and freshwater pools at The Moors; the two are separated by Aztec Adventure’s sailing centre and the River Salwarpe. Both get their fair share of birds – from residents like great-crested grebe, Cetti’s warbler, reed bunting and bullfinch to breeding birds like little ringed plover, shoveler, sedge warbler, oystercatcher and lapwing. During spring and autumn, birds drop in to Upton Warren on their way to and from their breeding grounds, often from Africa to the Arctic Circle. Birds like dunlin, greenshank, black-tailed godwit and osprey are relatively regular but much rarer birds have visited – Temminck’s stint, Baird’s sandpiper and red-necked grebe, for example. Upton Warren was one of our earliest nature reserves; we’re the county’s largest nature conservation charity and are celebrating our 50th birthday this year. The salt-marsh there is not only important in its own right but it also helps to ensure that birds like avocets keep returning; it’s home to invertebrate food that doesn’t live in freshwater environments. We’ve recently restored some of the islands in the pools at The Flashes and will be doing more of this at The Moors thanks to recent funding from Biffa Award. Whiling away some time at Upton Warren can be incredibly relaxing; there are plenty of bird hides that help you settle down without disturbing the birds. Stay for just a little while and you’ll start to see the soap opera-nature of life; the comings and goings, the interactions between neighbouring birds and the dramas that can unfold. There are often volunteers and regular visitors in the hides who will help to point out which bird is which and what to look out for. Retro Run 2018 Annual Charity Bike Ride 14th July which to date has raised over £24,000 for local charities!
T
he Retro Run was founded in 2011, when a group of 15 like minded guys decided to have a bike ride on their old school bikes which they had as kids, BMX’s, Choppers, Grifters etc.
They then had the idea that if they could raise some money whilst doing it, all the better, all of the guys are from the Bromsgrove area and surrounding villages. Since the outset, there are still a handful of the original group who continue to participate every year, including Sid Griffin, Nick Griffin, Wesley Gardner, Darren Latin Smith, Scott Cater, Brett Cater, Joe Banner, Pete Stokes, and Tim Browne. They always contribute to the day, whether through organisation on the day, building a bike to auction, producing signs or generally spreading the word. This years’ run will be on the 8th July and is themed ‘pieces of 8’ and ‘all things pirate’, with fancy dress an option, but encouraged. They start from the Nailers Arms in Bournheath and take a 9 mile round trip via Fairfield and Belbroughton ending back at the Nailers, collecting money along the way. With the support from Phil and Shula Witherford and their staff who help to make it all possible. It is now an annual event aimed at raising much needed funds for a different charity each year. The charities are local, underfunded and sometimes have a personal connection. Now in its 8th year they have raised over £21,000 with every penny of money collected going to the chosen charities that they support. The first charities were Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Acorns, but they have also supported Motor Neurone Disease (£8000) after one of their very good friends sadly passed away from the disease which they witnessed first-hand, and the devastation it caused! Last year saw them support Dodford Children’s Holiday Farm (£8000) which is extremely underfunded, having to fundraise almost all the running costs let alone money for upkeep of buildings and new facilities. The money raised has had a huge impact for the charities and they are extremely proud of what has been achieved so far. This year they are raising much needed funds for Primrose Hospice and are currently appealing for donations towards their raffle, no matter how big or small, all donations are welcome. Health & Wellbeing Are we losing the war on health?

W
ith a brief couple of days of warm sunshine, it got me to thinking about topping up my vitamin D. Living in the northern hemisphere, the majority of people are lacking in vitamin D; as well as suffering from SAD Syndrome through lack of sunshine. Which means, that we all definitely need to supplement.
Always get advice from your doctor before supplementing Vitamin D. Your doctor will test you to see if you are deficient and will advise you. I supplement with an oral spray that I find very pleasant in taste. But of course, it is not only vitamin D that most of us are lacking. In general, few of us get enough vitamins and minerals in our diet. I think we all know by now that the soil, that our food is grown in, is extremely depleted in minerals. We know from our biology classes that plants take up these minerals from the soil through their roots and if these minerals are no longer in the soil, then of course they will not be in the plant. If we look at the Jurassic Era and the size of the plants and dinosaurs, we can actually see visually how healthy the soil of the planet was during that time, just by their size. In those days our soil contained at least 70 different minerals, where today we are lucky if our soil contains 7 to 14 minerals. If you are supplementing with a mineral you need to make sure that it is plant based from fossilised plants, rather than from actual stone minerals that have been ground down to a fine powder and incorporated with your vitamins e.g. calcium. Unfortunately, minerals that are stone based are extremely difficult for the body to assimilate and the body ends up simply peeing these minerals away.
As I wrote in my previous article I never recommend anything that I do not research or use myself. Two years ago, I was introduced to a superfood supplement which I found was excellent but over the last few months I have found an even newer and more complex supplement that I have trialled, and I am finding the results amazing. Skin is glowing, nails growing, hair looking glossy and health wise feeling very alive.
So, what is amazing about this vitamin and mineral supplement? This is the equivalent in terms of vitamins and minerals that my new supplement contains per daily serving. With this new vitamin and mineral supplement, I have reduced my daily intake from around 10 to 15 tablets per day down to 4 tablets a day, and it is saving me money as well, which is always a good thing. What is so important in regard to this supplement is a Patented BioAmplified™ Absorption Complex which is composed of various enzymes and key minerals that help to facilitate the absorption of these nutrients.
Clearly, we all need to supplement our mineral intake. But we also need to consider whether the vitamin content in our fruit and vegetables is also depleted.

Because of industrial farming most of our fruit and vegetables are picked before they are fully ripe, so they can “ripen” during transit. However, we all need sunshine and that includes our fruit and vegetables. Without full exposure to sunlight, coupled with our soil being deficient in the first place, clearly our food is often nutrient poor.

As long as you don’t mind the slightly messy bit when you stand in the booth wearing paper knickers then you’re on to a winner here, particularly if you’re jetting off in the winter 5 Fake it – DIY Spray, mousse or lotion? It’s best to experiment and see what works best for you. Top tip – always exfoliate and moisture first, use an application mitt and stand on an old towel rather than your new carpet. Apply in the morning to give it time to dry. Some folks swear by cocoa powder potions. A vintage year for Bromsgrove’s Wine Rooms A year ago this month, dreams became reality for four lifelong Bromsgrovians when St John’s Wine Rooms finally opened its doors. Their vision was a simple one: to create a Bromsgrove-based venue serving good food and an imaginative selection of drinks.

2 tea spoons cumin seeds ½-1 tsp chilli flakes, to taste 2 table spoons olive oil 1 large sweet potato, peeled and cut into 1cm chunks (about 400g total weight) 2 cloves garlic, chopped 400g cherry tomatoes, halved
1 bunch British asparagus, trimmed and chopped into bite size pieces 2-4 eggs, depending on hunger a small handful coriander, chopped Salt and freshly ground black pepper
What to do: Add the cumin and chilli to a frying pan and set over a medium-high heat to toast for a couple of minutes. Once the spices are fragrant, pour in the oil and add the sweet potato cubes, stirring well to mix. Reduce the heat to a minimum and cover the pan with a piece of tin foil (or a lid if you have one). Leave to cook for 10 minutes, stirring once or twice, until the sweet potato is just starting to soften. Remove the foil, add the garlic and stir through, then fry for a minute. Turn the heat up a little, add the tomatoes and a little salt and pepper and fry for another 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir through the asparagus, recover loosely with the foil and cook for another 5 minutes. Use a wooden spoon to push the vegetables aside to make 2-4 wells in the asparagus mix, cracking an egg into each. Recover loosely with the foil and leave to cook until the eggs are done to your liking, about 5-8 minutes for a set white and a runny yolk. Season with salt and black pepper, scatter over the coriander, top with a dollop of Greek yogurt and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil. Serve immediately with plenty of crusty bread.

he English weather doesn’t exactly make it easy for you to decide what to wear to a wedding. Add to that the pressure of looking chic, yet comfortable with potentially many hours on your feet, and some of us wedding guests have a major dilemma on our hands! Here are tips on how to look effortlessly stylish at a wedding:-
1. Tried and tested. Unless you are the bride, never wear a new outfit for the first time to an important event such as a wedding. You don’t know whether it will be comfortable or whether it might let you down. I recall watching a beautifully dressed woman having to be carried onto a coach to get her to the wedding she was attending as her dress was too tight to climb the steps! 2. Stand out. Many wedding guests will still wear a traditional shift dress with a matching fascinator but if it suits your personality style - why not try wearing a gorgeous jumpsuit with heels instead? Be true to yourself to look and feel your best! 3. Not the time for business. Gentlemen choose a statement tie in a beautiful silk or add an interesting colour in a detail of your outfit to avoid looking like you are at a business meeting. 4. Stay warm. If you are worried about staying warm and stylish in the evening try a faux fur stole, a beautiful cashmere cardigan or a statement shawl as long as it still makes you feel like a million dollars. A warm million dollars! 5. Flats Are In. There is nothing worse than watching someone struggle through a wedding in a pair of killer high heels. Have some spare flats in your bag for dancing in but make sure they still work with your outfit. 6. Don’t wear a white wedding-esque dress - Its essential to differentiate yourself from the bride and not to be in any way in competition with her. True red is the only colour that everyone can wear successfully, and it is a great colour to use as a top if you don’t want to go all out with a block colour. 7. Natural Party Look. Wear natural looking make up during the day but have a mineral foundation compact and a killer lipstick in one of your wow colours to re-apply before facing the photographer! Even if you don’t usually wear much make up, a gentle touch of make up in the right colours will make you look amazing for the pics. 8. Vintage – wearing something vintage can help avoid the problem of guests wearing identical outfits. Just be sure it fits well and is in your colours and style. 9. Accessorise…Accessorise! Dress up your outfit with stunning jewellery but make sure the whole look is balanced including size of hat, jewellery and bag. 10. Versatility is key. If you can’t resist buying a new outfit for that important event, then think about the future cost per wear before blowing your budget. It is tempting when invited to a wedding to rush out and buy a new outfit, but before purchasing think about how many times you are likely to wear it in the future. Alternatively have you already got a great dress that can be accessorised differently? wedding photographer is an important part of your day. Their job is to capture your story and create photographic memories you can look back on for a lifetime. That’s why choosing a wedding photographer is something to take seriously. Jessica Raphael has been a full time wedding photographer for four years, she is based in Bromsgrove and travels all over the UK and abroad. Get into your dress earlier than you think - If you are wanting lots of portraits in your dress, with bridesmaids and parents before the ceremony then get into your dress MUCH earlier than you think, especially if the ceremony is in a separate location. Your photographer will have to leave to get to your ceremony location whether you’re ready or not and you could miss out on those photos as there’s always a last minute rush. Being prepared will mean your photographer can capture those moments and you can feel calm and relaxed before the ceremony. Have an un-plugged ceremony - After seeing so many weddings and having had many photographs full of a sea of iPhones and iPads it’s something I wholeheartedly recommend. The ceremony is the most special and intimate moment of the day and your guests have been chosen to share that time with you in person rather than through a screen. You will have a professional photographer there who will capture this in the best possible way for you, therefore a number of iPhone pictures from your friends really wont compare. Also,

they can sometimes ruin the professional photos by getting in the way of the photographer, who can’t stop the ceremony to ask them to move! Book a videographer - This is something that can get overlooked as people understandably don’t want to feel like their on a film set. This is why if you do have a videographer, choose someone with a style you like and one which compliments your photographer. For example, if you want a documentary style photographer, pick a videographer who films in the same way, otherwise you will find it too obtrusive. I am lucky that my Fiancé Rob is a videographer so we work together a lot, whether that’s with his own business ‘Fuzfilms’ or if he is booked with my collections. We compliment each other when working as we know what the other person needs, so because of this, the finished photographs and film always will compliment each other, flowing seamlessly. A wedding film is a great way to re-live the day again, and really brings back the emotions. No-one ever regrets having a wedding film! Overall choose a photographer whose style you love, who’s on the same wave -length and mostl importantly someone who you like and get along with. You need to like your photographer so you feel comfortable with them and feel your best in front of the camera. If your photographer feels that you trust them then they can work to the best of their ability. Relax, enjoy, be in the moment and let your photographer capture your day the perfect way.

t the annual presentation night of the prestigious Midlands Club Cricket Conference held on April 6th at Edgbaston Cricket Ground, Avoncroft Chairman Rod Braithwaite was presented with the Norman Sharp award. This is for exceptional service to cricket for over 40 years (63 years in Rod’s case) with particular reference to Avoncroft CC.
After the event Rod had this to say: I was very flattered to receive this award. After all I have enjoyed my cricket with Avoncroft since I was 12 until I finished playing when I was 69. I continue to relish my involvement with the Club especially watching our teams performing, this can be rather frustrating at times as my advice is generally taken with a pinch of salt, modern players think retired players all have, the Fred Trueman syndrome ‘It was never like this in my day!’

I hope that the award shows that players can remain with a Club for many years and enjoy their cricket. I am always saddened when a promising young player announces he is going to a ‘bigger club’. This seems to happen in all professional sport these days, but we are amateurs and we can make lasting friendships over the years with members of our own Club and opposition players. I still have many pals within the Club and some who have moved from the district, and I was delighted to meet a few more old foes at the Awards night.
On our table that evening we also had three players of the year, another great achievement! It’s great to see that these Award evenings are no longer male only evenings, with plenty of ladies present to join in the celebrations.
Over the years, my greatest achievements with the Club have been when leading teams as captain. We had many successes in the 70s and 80s, especially in the Haig Village Cup (last 16 in the country twice, and lost to eventual winners at Lords 3 times). We also won KO trophies locally at Bromsgrove, Astwood Bank and Chaddesley. More recently, I was proud of the Club reaching the Worcester League KO final two years in succession. I was especially pleased when the Club received the League award a couple of years ago for being the most sporting team. My personal cricket achievements don’t make spectacular reading. Top score 87 not out, ne’er a ton, and best bowling 8-57 (7 clean

I was lucky to get to the Awards evening as it was originally arranged for the evening when the ‘Beast from the East’ arrived. I was on holiday, but the evening was subsequently re arranged enabling me to attend.
This all goes to show to anyone who doesn’t know or hasn’t guessed that I am a traditionalist. It has served me well during 64 years at Avoncroft, and I hope a few of you will follow in my footsteps. I have refrained from mentioning personalities in this narrative-there are far too many whose company I have greatly enjoyed over the years. However, I must mention my greatly admired mentor-John Sutcliffe, a giant of a man in all ways who was the greatest influence on me, along with my Dad, in my cricket life. John was the father of the Club, and the ground is named after him. It is a great legacy.
Avoncroft Cricket Club Season - Month 1 report
W
ith the shoots of spring finally reaching us, Avoncroft’s cricketers have started to emerge from their winter hibernation and have taken to the field for the first few weeks of the new season. The Saturday 1st XI have started the season well, with two wins and a draw in their first 3 games to sit 4th in their league. A nervy victory in the first game of the season, away at Hanley Castle, was set up by four wickets from skipper Jon Hunter and finished off by a classy 55 not out from wicketkeeper Tom Murray. This was followed up by a disappointing draw at Netherton; with a mature knock of 41 not out from Josh Cound the only real highlight. Croft’s most recent performance has been their best to date; four wickets from Paul Athey and five from Jon Hunter bowling Malvern out for 156 before destructive knocks from Dan Elliott (67 not out) and Sam Hughes (34) chased down the target in less than 17 overs. The 1st XI will look to continue their good start when they take on league favourites Lye this weekend. The Saturday 2nd XI have had an even better start to the season, sitting top of the league after three straight victories. 42 not out from experienced wicketkeeper Jason Huxley was enough to see Croft home for a comfortable victory in their first game against Kidderminster before two tight affairs against Bredon and Astwood Bank. Jon Brunt was the start of the show against Bredon; his 103 carrying the 2nds to a two wicket victory.
A strong all-round bowling performance, led by Simon Wilkes (4-26), was enough to see Croft home against Astwood Bank to maintain their spot at the top of the table. Not to be outdone, Avoncroft’s Sunday XI have also started the season well with two wins and one defeat. Jonty Heslop has led the way to date, with knocks of 50 and 90 demonstrating his potential to be a key player for Croft this season. He’s been ably supported by his skipper Christopher Pitt who has continued his good form from last season with scores of 47 and 51. In addition to the successes from the senior sides, it’s been great to see a continued rise in participation throughout the thriving junior section. Nearly 80 children have so far come along to Avoncroft’s Stoke Heath ground on a Friday night to join in with training and start to build a love for the game of cricket. Results in their competitive matches to date have also been good, with two wins for the Under 9’s, a win for the Under 11’s in their first ever game, and another for the Under 12’s. Kathy Townsend joined Mercian Nordic Walking for health reasons She has walked and exercised twice a week with the instructor Ian Norcott, and has taken advantage of the numerous walks all over our beautiful countryside within Bromsgrove. Kathy said ‘I have never found an exercise activity that I really enjoyed before, but now I have found myself on a fit for life course and take part in muscle strength and endurance classes too’. Nordic walking might look a bit strange but the poles offer upper body resistance therfore working 90% of your muscles. It has, quite simply, changed my life!

Another great year in prospect for the Bromsgrove Festival 2018 will be a great year for the arts in Bromsgrove In its 58th year of existence, the 2018 Festival programme will be in the same wide ranging community based style as before. It continues to focus on arts and cultural activity and will maintain the range and quality of such events provided in previous years. Alongside this, the trustees have sought to place more emphasis on free community arts events, for example by expanding the EnjoyRubery programme to a full weekend from Friday 22nd June to Sunday 24th June, and by promoting additional Free Bite Sized Classics concerts in Catshill and Rubery. We hope that this will encourage greater participation in Festival activities. The programme, which kicks off on the evening of Thursday 21st June with ‘Jazz Sirens’ - a high profile jazz concert at Artrix featuring one of Britain’s finest jazz singers, Jacqui Dankworth (the daughter of Johnny Dankworth and Cleo Lane), and her band - runs for just over four weeks to the final MusicFest gala concert on Sunday, 22nd July given by the Orchestra of St John. During the four week Festival period, there is an arts or cultural event on virtually every day at venues right across the Bromsgrove District. These range from theatre productions, both inside and outside, opera, folk and blues concerts as well as a number of classical orchestral and choral performances.

There are also dance events, art exhibitions, comedy and the spoken word. Many of these events are designed for children and younger people, with participation encouraged. As last year, there will be a range of free community events on Saturdays on Bromsgrove High Street and New Road Rubery as well as a Summer Jam and skateboarding competition in Rubery Park on the afternoon of Saturday 23rd June. The Festival is grateful for financial support from Bromsgrove District Council for these free community events which also include a Day of Dance, Family Fun on the High Street and a Fusion event on Saturday 21st July. The full programme and details of ticket purchase arrangements for each event are available on the Bromsgrove Festival website at www.bromsgrovefestival.co.uk. Alternatively, free programme brochures can be picked up at the Library, community centres, and many churches and shops. The 2018 Bromsgrove Festival will offer another exciting programme.
