Welcome to the October issue of Completely Bromsgrove Autumn is now well on its way with the days getting shorter. Some of you may already have turned the central heating on! I’m pleased to say that there is plenty to read in this issue. Readers with gardens need to be mindful when clearing the leaves and look out for our prickly friend the hedgehog. Wendy Carter from Worcestershire Wildlife Trust talks about the decline in numbers and how we can play an important part in this cute creature’s future survival. Severn Trent Water is investing £500,000 in the Catshill area, relaying a 600 metre section of water pipe to ensure that supplies to the local area are safe and any issues are easy to fix, while the newly laid footpath alongside the A38 at Charford has been redeveloped and completed. It also includes the installation of new LED bat friendly lighting. We Spray Anything, based on Silver Birches Business

Park, have been assisting TV’s DIY king Nick Knowles on his new series Big House Clearout which can be viewed on Channel 5 and My5. Well done to Paul and his team on such a fantastic accolade for their company. This month we also bring you an update on developments at the Artrix. At present, the venue is still being used as a Covid19 vaccination centre, but hopefully one day we will be able to visitfor more lighthearted entertainment. On the theme of entertainment, turn to pages 53 to 60 where you will find what’s happening in and around the area. Now that theatres and entertainment venues have re-opened, let’s give them our support and enjoy a little more normality in our lives. As always, I hope you enjoy this month’s magazine and until the November issue, keep safe and healthy. Kind regards,

Catshill water works will improve supply to village

S

evern Trent is investing £500,000 in the Catshill area to relay a 600 metre section of water pipe to ensure that water supplies to the local area are safe and any issues are easy to fix.

The existing water pipe is located underneath the ground at Willowbrook Garden Centre in Stourbridge Road and it would be hard to access if there are any leaks or bursts. It is also close to the brook and if there is a leak, Severn Trent does not want water from the brook to get into the water supply. The company is moving the pipe to the fields around the garden centre so that if there are any issues, engineers can easily do any repairs quickly, meaning any disruption for customers would be an absolute minimum. Work started in July and is ahead of schedule. It will be finished by mid to late November. Pipes in the fields to the north of the garden centre have been laid and now that the farmers’ crops have been harvested, Severn Trent has started work in the field to the south and has already crossed the cycle path. After the water pipe has been laid the new pipes will be connected to the existing system. This will be done during the half term holidays, starting on October 27th and running for five days. Road signs will be put out two weeks in advance.

6  Completely Bromsgrove

The garden centre will remain open but the road will be closed between house numbers 222 and 357. Access to properties will be maintained and a full diversion will be in place. Project manager Kevin Hatch said: “Before we put the pipe into the ground, the students at Chadsgrove School each created a sticker with their name on it. Those stickers have been stuck onto the pipe and for as long as it’s in the ground, it will be their pipe. Unfortunately, we’re hoping it will be decades before they get to see it again. “We’ve been working hard to make sure that people know that Willowbrook Garden Centre is still open throughout the work we’re doing – particularly when the road is closed at half term. We have also erected signs around the site, telling people what we’re doing and also giving a few interesting messages from Severn Trent – all about our Great Big Nature Boost and some water saving hints and tips. It’s definitely worth a walk to see them.”

Alvechurch Legal Services

M

ost people in Alvechurch will know of Alvechurch Insurance Services or David E Matthews. The faces will be very familiar to village residents, and the roots of the business date back nearly 50 years. After Brian Hawkins finally retired in October 2019 (at the age of 82!) after over 40 years with the firm there was a spare seat in the Alvechurch Office and thus the idea Alvechurch Legal Services was born… Laura Hawkins (the Daughter of Andy and Granddaughter of Brian) and James Raybone made it their mission to fill the large gap left by the retirement of Brian. James and Laura had both worked for national law firms, working all hours under the sun for little reward. We also both felt we could not offer our clients the service they deserved whilst working in such a pressured environment. So, Alvechurch Legal Services was founded so that they could have the freedom to treat our clients like actual humans!

You can usually find Laura inside the The firm specialises in Wills, Power of Attorney and Probate as Alvechurch Insurance Services office however, they found that they loved this area of law and working together. she is still working from home due to COVID19 but you can still contact us on 0121 445 However, they wanted to be able to offer their clients a friendly, Completely quarter Oct 2021.qxp_75mm w x 115mm deep 3307 S4F or email laura@alvechurchlegal.co.uk local service but with realistic fix fee pricing.

A message from our MP

T

he Prime Minister recently appointed his new Cabinet, and I am delighted to continue my work as the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care. I’m absolutely determined to get our country through the pandemic, tackle the backlog, and deliver lasting reforms to health and social care. Our focus as a government is to get on with the job, including managing Covid, continuing our historic vaccine rollout, levelling up and getting more people into work - and redoubling our efforts to deliver on the people’s priorities. Backing local business and entrepreneurship will be key to that and I was delighted to recently visit several new businesses in Bromsgrove District. This included the new bar, Dry Spy, and the new restaurant, Melt, in Bromsgrove Town. I also had the chance to visit several small businesses at the busy Tardebigge Court. Alongside my visit to these local businesses, I also visited Tardebigge Canal to meet with the Chief Executive of the Canal and River Trust. The Government is investing over £80,000 in the canal, which is such an impor tant feature of our local culture, recreation, and history. I look forward to working with the Trust on suppor ting our beautiful waterways.

8  Completely Bromsgrove

I also recently met with the new Fire Chief for Hereford and Worcester. It was a productive meeting, and we covered a range of impor tant issues. During the meeting, I had the privilege to see the firefighters head out on an emergency call. It was a fantastic demonstration of their skill and professionalism. Our brave first responders are truly inspiring, and I just want to take the oppor tunity to thank the retiring Chief Constable of West Mercia Police, Anthony Bangham, for his incredible thir ty years of service. I look forward to working with his successor, Pippa Mills, on suppor ting local residents and cutting crime. I look forward to continuing my work as local MP in Parliament and in Bromsgrove. As ever, if I can be of any assistance to my constituents, please email me at sajid.javid.mp@parliament.uk

Bromsgrove’s bats boosted by new streetlights

B

at friendly streetlights have been installed on the new footpath that links Charford Road to Harvington Road in Bromsgrove.

The footpath, which runs alongside the A38 Eastern Bypass, has been redeveloped as part of the Bromsgrove Route Enhancement Programme (BREP). Having previously been unlit, the installation of conventional white LED lighting had the potential to interfere with the local ecosystem, therefore the new lights give off an amber light, similar tothe older sodium lamps, to reduce this impact. This initiative follows a successful trial on the A4440 in Worcester alongside Warndon Wood which was said to be a ‘corridor’ for bats. Research has shown some species of bats avoid areas lit by white lights, which could lead them to use longer and less safe routes.

10  Completely Bromsgrove

The footpath is one of a number of schemes that have been taking place in the town to improve local infrastructure with the aim of improving routes for cyclists and pedestrians, along with a number of improvements to the A38 between the M5 junction four at Lydiate Ash and junction five at Wychbold. More information about the BREP can be found at: www.worcestershire.gov. uk/info/20679/a38_bromsgrove_ route_enhancement_programme_ brep/2458/a38_brep_improvements_ background

GARDENING

Thinking ahead for a colourful spring

A

s dark days loom ahead of us, planning the springtime explosion of colour for the garden can help to shorten the long cold winter. Nothing lifts the spirits more than the bright shock of yellows and reds that herald the arrival of spring.

Investing time and planning in October will ensure that your garden sings its heart out come March. Start your patio planters now. With careful thought there can be an endless display by mixing different bulbs and spring flowers. Firstly snowdrops, followed by delicate crocus, daffodils and tulips. Wallflowers are commonly grown as a spring bedding plant but most are biennial, grown from seed in late spring, planted out in autumn ready for flowering next March. You can buy bare-root wallflower plants for autumn planting. Perennial wallflowers are a great source of nectar, so provide early food for pollinators

over a long season; these should be planted between May and September. Wallflowers do best in moist but well-drained soils, in a sunny location but will be equally happy in partial shade. Other recommended plants to use are bronze leafed heuchera, hebes, heathers and skimmias; with their glossy green leaves and bright berries, a match made in heaven against the sunny daffodil. Not forgetting the humble winter pansy; with constant deadheading to remove the seed heads they can continue to provide colour all through the season and often into summer.

Garden jobs for October Remove any pot saucers and raise pots up onto feet to prevent waterlogging over winter Wrap layers of fleece or straw around tropical plants and tree ferns to protect from frost

Reduce the height of shrub roses to avoid wind-rock damage over winter

Cover salad plants with cloches to prolong cropping

Empty spent summer pots and hanging baskets, and compost the contents or empty onto your borders

Order bare-root fruit trees and bushes for planting from late autumn to early spring

Keep sowing batches of hardy broad beans and peas outdoors for early crops next year Plant garlic cloves in a sunny welldrained spot, 15cm apart, with their tip 5cm below the surface Plant swathes of bulbs in your lawn

Sow sweet peas in deep pots in your greenhouse for early flowers next summer Apply an autumn lawn feed to revive the grass Empty ceramic and glazed pots that aren’t frost proof and store in a shed over winter

Winter doesn’t have to be drab, especially if you fill your patio with tubs of sunshine. By Suzi M, garden lover and plotter at Roundhill Allotments

s your outdoor space looking its best for the Winter months ahead and the harsher weather?

It’s not only garden plants that can be affected by wind, rain, and cold temperatures. Star t with a look at your fencing: check to see if posts are firm and not wobbling, which wind and rain would only worsen. Look at the panels themselves; if they are tired and battered, now is the time to replace individual panels or the whole fence. Contemporary horizontal boards, traditional feather board or slatted panels are all good looking, strong options and will withstand changes in the seasons. Take a look at our fencing range and How To Guides online to show you how or call us for assistance. How is your shed or pergola looking for the Winter months ahead? Do you need new, larger storage for garden furniture and barbeque? We have a wide range of sheds in different sizes and designs, or can work to your bespoke needs. How about giving your shed a seasonal makeover with some Osmo wood treatment to protect and nourish: try Country Colour exterior paint, Natural Oil Woodstain or UV Protection Oil, all of which will enhance and protect your timber through Winter and into next year. Tile Choice - winners at The TTA Awards Night

Tile Association Award Winners 2021

O

n September 10th the tiling industry celebrated an in-person get-together at the annual The Tile Association Awards. This was the first industry gathering to have taken place for two years and there was a real sense of occasion and pleasure in being able to meet up for a celebration and enjoy a long-anticipated catch-up and chat with friends and colleagues old and new. The awards were held in a Covid-secure manner, with all the recommended precautions taken. TTA would like to thank everyone who attended and helped to make the evening safe and successful. The sold out evening was held at the Forest of Arden Marriott Hotel & Country Club, which is a great venue, and the evening was hosted once again by the ever-popular Kyran Bracken MBE. His hilarious stories from his illustrious career in international rugby and Dancing on Ice once again kept everyone entertained. He also did a great job as a host for the evening, leading the presentations with pace, humour and professionalism. The spotlight however was firmly on the award winners and TTA would once again like to congratulate all the winners and finalists. You are all a credit to our industry and your recognition at the TTA’s awards night is richly deserved. For the second year running Wolverhamptonbased company Tile Choice, who now have 18 stores throughout the central region plus an online store picked up another industry gold award for excellence in marketing. This is on the back of winning an award for best e-commerce website in 2020. Lee Rudkin, marketing director, said: “This is the sixth time we have won a TTA Award and as a company, we’ve been working very hard the last year despite all the restrictions ensuring Tile Choice remains at the forefront of customer’s minds whilst also bringing

focus to the tile industry and the products we sell within mainstream media platforms.” “We are extremely proud to be recognised by our peers at The Tile Association for the work our dedicated team have put in over the years to making Tile Choice a continuing success.” It was also a successful night for the TTA’s nominated charity Children Today. The fundraising draw raised an impressive total of £1,600. www.tilechoice.co.uk

Going green for Recycle Week B

uildings in Bromsgrove district and across the county were lit up green for national Recycle Week to remind residents to step up their recycling habits and recycle the right things. Now in its 18th year, Recycle Week is the one week of the year where retailers, brands, waste management companies, trade associations, governments and the media come together to achieve one goal – to inspire the public to recycle more of the right things, more often. Bromsgrove District Council joined in the campaign by lighting up their buildings, alongside some of their business waste customers. Recycle Week ran from September 20th to 26th and the theme was ‘step it up’, which aimed to encourage residents to make small but powerful changes to their day to day lives – such as recycling – to make a positive impact on climate change. The district council’s portfolio holder for climate change, Cllr Michael Thompson, said: “Recycling just one bleach bottle can save enough energy to power a streetlamp for six and a half hours, so if everyone

24  Completely Bromsgrove

improved the way they recycle, even in a small way, it could have huge impacts on our environment. “There have been many things over the course of the pandemic which we have had no control over, but our impact on climate change is not always one of them. Environmental concerns are still on the increase and so we need to do more. We need to do it now and we need to act together.” Full details, including an A-Z of recycling, of what can and can’t be recycled in Worcestershire, are available at www.letswasteless.com

Our prickly pals I

’m lucky enough to have hedgehogs visiting my garden every night and I even saw hoglets this year. Sadly, however, I’m one of a falling number of people that can delight in seeing our prickly pals on a regular basis. It’s thought that there were 35 million hedgehogs in the UK in the 1950s – today, estimates put that number at fewer than one million! When I was little I couldn’t pronounce the name of this most beguiling of creatures – ‘heghodges’, ‘hodgehegs’ or other exclamations all meant the same thing…“look mum, there’s one of those strange balls of prickles”. I had the exuberance of a child rather than the excitement of someone who knows that what they’re seeing is increasingly rare. Can you believe that hedgehogs were once determinedly persecuted? They were blamed, for example, for stealing the milk of cows from their udders when they sat down – we know now, of course, that milk makes hedgehogs ill so they wouldn’t have done this. Their decline these days stems from our changing world rather than orchestrated slaughter. Hedgehogs once relied on a network of wide mature hedgerows. Miles of hedgerows were uprooted in the 1970s and many of those that remain are not managed for the benefit they could bring to wildlife. Our hoggies now rely more on our network of gardens; modern surveys indicate that hedgehogs are doing better in towns than in the countryside. Adult hedgehogs can travel a mile each night on their hunt for slugs, snails, worms and other beasties to munch on. As autumn starts to turn to winter, it’s vital that they find enough food as they need to weigh at least 600g in order to make it through hibernation. You can help to give your local hoggies a helping hand.

As well as making sure that your garden is wildlifefriendly with lots of natural hedgehog food in it, you can connect it to your neighbour’s gardens and the wider landscape – holes through gates and fences allow hoggies to travel far and wide to find food. Leave a bit of your garden ‘wild’ – longer grass, dead leaves, a compost heap all provide quiet spaces to forage and snooze. You can invest in or build your own hedgehog hotel, a box with a waterproof roof tucked away somewhere quiet. If you’ve got a pond, make sure there’s a ramp to enable hoggies and other wildlife to get out. With bonfire night coming up, don’t forget to check for snoozing hedgehogs before lighting the match (or, even better, store the material in one place and move it to a clear space on the day itself). Finally, let us know if you’ve seen a hedgehog to help us build a better picture about where they’re found in the county. We’ve got a short form and more information about hedgehogs on our website www.worcswildlifetrust.co.uk/hedgehogs

Virtual London Marathon and open day at The Shed T

he Bromsgrove Shedders are inviting members of the community to a fundraising and open day being held at The Shed on Sunday, October 3rd from 9am to 3pm, which includes a marathon and Ping-Pong-a-Thon.

October 3rd is the date of the world’s first 100,000-person marathon with 50,000 par ticipants in a virtual event joining the same number of runners on the traditional London Marathon course. One of those taking par t in the virtual event will be Abi Swarbrick, who will be running a marathon in and around Stoke Prior to help raise money for Age UK BRWF’s Bromsgrove Men in Sheds, which she describes as “a lifeline” for her father-in-law, Phil. Men in Sheds originates from an Australian project, called Men’s Sheds, as a way of tackling loneliness and social isolation in older men. From the calls that Age UK BRWF receives, it is aware that initiatives like Bromsgrove Men in Sheds have never been needed more. Phil said his involvement with the Bromsgrove Shed came about through “circumstance and coincidence”. After suffering from a major condition, followed by 18 months of surgery, Phil tried to adopt a can-do approach but, while his body started to recover, the experience had had a significant impact on his emotional wellbeing. He sought solace in his workshop but was becoming increasingly isolated. While working, Abi met a Shedder who admired a wooden pen she was using that Phil had made for her. He told her about The Shed and after much persuasion from his family, Phil decided to go along.

encouragement. Given the difference The Shed has made to my quality of life, Abi decided to undertake the Vir tual London Marathon to raise funds for Bromsgrove Men in Sheds. “I am incredibly proud of her for taking on this challenge and I hope that sharing my story will encourage people to support her efforts and to take that step to ‘reconnect’ and perhaps, like me, visit The Shed.” Abi will be starting her marathon at 9am from The Shed, based at Unit 1 on Metal Ores Industrial Estate 138 Hanbury Road, Stoke Prior, B60 4JZ. To cheer Abi on, and to help raise awareness of The Shed, the Bromsgrove Shedders will be holding an open day, inviting people to find out more. While Abi is running, the Shedders will also be taking on their own challenge with their Ping-Pong-a-Thon, playing continuous table tennis from the time Abi star ts and only stopping when she crosses her finishing line back at The Shed. The Shedders are really grateful to Abi for what she is doing. To sponsor her marathon effort please visit https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ AbigailSwarbrick For more information, please contact Jo Hughes at Age UK BRWF Tel: 01527 868855 or email: Jo.Hughes@ageukbrwf.org.uk

“The welcome that I received from the Shedders was such that I decided to join and it is one of the better decisions I have ever made,” said Phil. “It has made a huge impact as I was part of a group that was suppor tive, full of laughter and fun. Shuttle bus from rail station would boost town centre

Bromsgrove High Street is gradually reinventing itself after the various lockdowns.

New independent shops are replacing the identikit chains, and the various cafes in the High Street between New Road and the Housman Statue, with their outside tables and their colourful gazebos, give a feeling of activity and bustle, particularly on Market Days - Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The West Midlands Rail Cross City and Birmingham to Hereford services mean that over 30 districts, towns and villages, from Lichfield in the north to Hereford in the south, can access Bromsgrove directly by train. Here is an idea for Bromsgrove District Council and the North Worcestershire Economic Regeneration Group (NWERG). On market days, run a low cost shuttle bus service (subsidised if necessary) directly between the railway station and the town centre bus station and promote the market days by social media and other means to all the destinations on the train routes. Probably there could be three return services an hour between both stations and these could be provided by the current bus operators, using 15 to

20 seater vehicles while demand is built up and until larger vehicles are shown to be needed. Once visitors are in the town centre, encourage them to stay by promoting the various places of interest within easy walking distance e.g. Sanders Park, St John’s Church, the Housman Statue and Trail, events at the Bird Box, the Norton Collection Museum, the Climbing Wall and Swimming Pool at the Leisure Centre, Artrix (when it re-opens) and perhaps attractions further out such as the Tardebigge Flight, the Royal Hunters Walks, Avoncroft Museum et al. The council and NWERG could set up and staff a “Tourist Information Centre” Gazebo in the High Street on market days to advise visitors as to what is available where. By making it easy to travel between the town centre and the railway station and by promoting what the town has to offer, local businesses, par ticularly those in hospitality, will thrive and the economy will receive a considerable boost, which will help it to recover from the last 18 months.

The Butcheress plays role in award-winning pub’s award success

A

short drive from Bromsgrove, family-owned country pub The Flyford has recently won several prestigious awards at the National Pub & Bar Awards.

The pub’s restaurant serves an eclectic modern British menu, using the finest suppliers from local to the south coast and Bromsgrove-based The Butcheress supplies some of the finest Herefordshire beef to the venue. In the face of the pandemic, the business had to adapt very quickly, offering takeaway Sunday roasts using The Butcheress’s Herefordshire beef sirloin, which is still served as part of a traditional Sunday lunch.

Director Rachel Edmonds also hand-rears some of her own Gloucestershire Old Spot pigs and Texel sheep and has 40 free-range chickens laying lovely eggs. As well as supplying British meat to the catering industry, it has a retail shop and offers a home delivery service to the public in Worcestershire and surrounding areas.

Also launched was Toast, a breakfast and brunch venue, which offers a warm and cosy atmosphere, serving artisan coffees, cocktails and on trend brunches. At the National Pub and Bar awards, the pub scooped two awards, Pub of the Year for Worcestershire and for the West Midlands. The judges noted the “diversity, quality and finish” of the venue, the high level of service and the fantastic menu. An independent business located in Stoke Prior, The Butcheress sources its meat from within the UK and as locally as possible and prides itself on the relationships it has built up with local farmers and suppliers. It also produces sausages, burgers and faggots and cures its own bacon. All meat is fully traceable from farm to plate.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

Phytobiophysics®-The power of plants I

n my articles over the past few months, you may have seen the phrase “health is wealth”. Having seen my sister break her ankle a couple of months ago I’m reminded of the song Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better. Well, I’m sitting here recuperating from a broken ankle. I was having a good day when I missed a step when walking down a staircase. After falling down in agony, I instantly thought about what would happen next. I was admitted to hospital for an operation and had plates and screws inserted for the three breaks that are fragile. I am now laid up for a minimum of 12 weeks, so Christmas here I come. Fortunately, I am healthy on all other levels and it is so frustrating as I can’t get around to doing the things I wish to do. My own daily healing regime is this: • Drinking lots of water. • Taking my Redox molecules throughout the day. • Using my Renu28 on the whole of my body because of the bruising from the needles and having to have an injection in my stomach every day to prevent blood clots. • My Biome (pro & prebiotics), vitamins and minerals and my omega fish oil. • Phytobiophysics®. If you’re unaware of Phytobiophysics®, The Institute of Phytobiophysics® was founded in 1992 by Diana Mossop after 15 years of research and development into the use of natural energy of plants in order to create vibrational formulas for humans and animals. Historic research into the vibration of the body has verified that electrical impulses travel through

the central and autonomic nervous system. Electrical circuits flow through specific body organs and systems, aiding their function. It has been shown that a free flow of energy is essential to ensure optimum health. Based on this research, each Phytobiophysics® Formula has been made by combining the essence of rare plants and trees, which have been gathered worldwide. This unique philosophy is referred to as Phytobiophysics® and is now recognised as a leading science in the world of natural healthcare. Phytobiophysics® formulas do not contain drugs, chemicals, additives salts, or preservatives. Because they have no organic or chemical content they have no side effects. They are safe to be combined or taken with any other preparation and do not interfere with medical prescription. I was introduced to these formulas because they relate to colour. As a colour therapist for more than 30 years these formulas have resonated with me and having met Diana when I was living in Malaysia and hearing her passion and understanding her insight, I knew that these formulas were a must for myself and part of my healing tool kit. Set up in 2016, The Grace Kelly Childhood Cancer Trust was founded in memory of four-yearold Grace Kelly who sadly passed away in 2014. To date, Grace’s legacy has raised over £1.8 million. The vision of the Trust was born from the inspiration that Grace imparted on the people she met. Grace was a compassionate and caring little girl, who looked after others before herself. Avoncroft Museum -back in business!

O

n May 1st, Avoncroft Museum re-opened its doors, and, as we know, was hit by senseless vandalism the same night.

But, thanks to the tireless work of Zoe Willems, the Director and Nick Sturgess, the Deputy Director, supported by numerous volunteers, the Museum has remained open throughout the summer, all the windows smashed in the attack have been replaced, and the Toll House and Bringsty Chapel are now open to the public. All through the season visitors have flocked to the Museum, showing their interest in, and affection for, the buildings and the green spaces. Once the all too shor t summer has gone, work will continue on refurbishing the Nailer’s Cottage interior, and then the Museum will be fully repaired. But throughout the autumn and winter, there will be a programme of Events, including on Saturday, October 16th and Sunday, October 17th ( including the Saturday evening ), “ The 1940’s Homefront “, which will recreate the atmosphere and events of the United Kingdom in World War Two.

Assizes for Heritage Open Days initiative O

n Saturday 18th September, The Bailiff, Bellman and Officers of the Court Leet gathered on the High Street in Bromsgrove to carry out assizes of products available for sale from independent traders to support the national Heritage Open Days initiative.

In by-gone days the officers of the Court Leet held positions such as Ale Taster, Searcher and Sealer of Leather, Carnitor of Flesh and Fish, Brook Looker and Breadweigher. Court Leet Officers would visit traders in the town to ensure their products were of good quality and their establishments run in an orderly manner - a role similar to today’s trading standards. Any trader found to be selling substandard wears would be summoned to appear in front of the Bailiff at the Court Leet meeting and might be subject to a fine or punishment. Today the Bromsgrove Court Leet exists to uphold the traditions of the town and support local businesses by re-enacting the customs of the past. The colourful and traditional ceremonies of assizes took place at the

Bromsgrove Cobbler, Market Plaice Fish and Chips, The Red Lion, Phoenix Floorings & Bedrooms, Umberto Giannini Hairdressers and Brenda Killigrew’s Sewing Studio. The Court also visited Jill’s Pantry and Sid’s Stall on Bromsgrove Markets where the Bellman (Town Crier) gave a cry to pay tribute to all the market traders of the town. At the BirdBox the group visited the Severn Arts Travelling Music Bus. Bailiff of the Court Leet Jo Slade said “It was a glorious sunny day and Bromsgrove was looking great with the busy markets, cafes and shops. In celebrating the ancient customs of the Court Leet we can use the traditions of the town to support local traders and businesses whilst putting on a show for the people in the High Street.”

HISTORY

Exploring Bromsgrove Cemetery

T

aking a walk in a Cemetery can give time and space for peace and reflection, as well as unlocking stories from the past and the history of the area when following a guided walk.

A public cemetery opened in Bromsgrove in 1858 following the Burial Acts of 1852 and 1857. In 1855, a Government Inspector visited the town and confirmed that the graveyard surrounding St John’s Church and the non-conformist burial grounds should be closed. A Burial Board was set up to acquire a suitable site. The area chosen was near the graveyard and was leased by Baroness Windsor from the Dean and Chapter of Worcester but occupied by Thomas Haines. Plans issued in early 1857, asked for tenders from architects and landscape gardeners to provide a lodge, reception room, entrance gates, the laying out of paths and the planting of trees within the six acres. The Burial Board were responsible for managing the Cemetery, selling plots and setting fees. A designated area covering about a quarter of the site was for nonconformist burials. It was accessed by the now disused lychgate that stands on the corner of Church Lane opposite ASDA’s goods entrance. The first adult to be buried in the new cemetery in January 1858 was John Adams, great-uncle of the poet A. E. Housman. Adams had come to Bromsgrove from Leicestershire in 1791 to manage the Worsted Mill at Watt Close. His memorial cross is a focal point on the path leading from the main entrance on Church Lane. After the cross was taken down in 2007 for safety reasons, a campaign instigated by Jennie McGregorSmith led to a Heritage Lottery project which funded its restoration, the provision of interpretation panels at three of the entrances, two guided walk leaflets and

Preserving our Heritage at St John’s church W

ith the thoughts of required repairs in St John’s at the forefront of our minds it was no surprise that Bromsgrove Society Chairman Pat Tansell came across archive articles from the Bromsgrove Messenger.

The pieces detail the works which took place in 1937 on the nave roof beams, and the wonderful photos in the ar ticles show what the working conditions were like at that time - very different to today, although the need remains the same - to keep the building in a good state of repair. Today, although drawing might start in a notebook, the final drawings and reports are, of course, created using a computer. St John’s appointed Structural Engineer Ian Ceney’s report contains hand drawn sketches created on a computer screen which highlight the required work. And when the time comes for the repair work to be undertaken, full risk assessments and safety considerations will be of utmost impor tance and the lifting of the steel elements will be done by access machines. What doesn’t change is the skill of those involved. Throughout the life of the church, with the many building projects which have taken place to best provide for the people of the time, all the individuals involved in the various projects have been highly skilled, as they are today. A triumphant end to six-year journey

I

n 2014 the Reverend Canon Wyn Beynon noticed severe cracking high up on the tower at St Michael and All Angels Church in Stoke Prior. In September the following year, Wyn hosted an open meeting to look at how to move forward with what was a significant costly repair.

The Tower Friends were born and so began a six-year journey to raise funds for a target of £550,000.The challenge seemed as enormous as the repairs to be undertaken but the group was determined to achieve the impossible - and they did so in spades. The group was able to celebrate in July 2020 when scaffolding was erected to start work on the Chancel. This was funded by the Church Commissioners at an additional cost of £140,000. The parochial church council, Tower Friends and everyone involved have been so grateful for the support that has been given over the last six years. There have been many personal donations, support from local businesses, grants from charities, trusts and foundations, including the Lottery Players through the National Lottery Heritage Fund, that made the project a success. If we could step back in time, we would see the extent to which styles and tastes have undergone distinct trends. So often we see the fashion of a generation become out of favour with the next. The changes undertaken during this restoration will be widely commented on now and in the years to come

when the next restoration is undertaken. With a new entrance at the West Door, access is made easier for everyone wishing to visit this beautiful church. It is worth a visit to see the changes that have been made in the Nave, the lime mortaring outside and the new French drains. The tower can now be viewed with its restored broach and the project is complete. The present PCC, and that of the future, start a new journey to care for and maintain St Michael and All Angels so that the next renovation project can start in around 150 years’ time. The Heritage Friends have now taken on the mantel of the Tower Friends. Please keep an eye out for events they will be hosting. This new fired up and ready to help team need your help to raise funds for the care and ongoing maintenance of the church. Thank you to all that have helped and please join the group on Sunday, October 3rd at 4pm when there will be a Thanksgiving Service to celebrate the project. Parking will be available at the village hall.

Work on future of Artrix gains expert group

A

group of community and arts sector representatives has been formed to help with plans to bring Bromsgrove’s theatre and arts venue Artrix back into use. The group has been formed by the Artrix Holding Trust to bring local, regional and national expertise into the discussion around the facility. It meets monthly to consider the issues and provide advice and support to the trustees, and contains representatives from Bromsgrove Arts Alive, the Bromsgrove Society, the Tell Me What You Want project and the Bromsgrove Partnership (Community Wellbeing Theme Group), along with Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership, Arts Council England and the Theatres Trust. Group chair Jane Earl, who is former chief executive of the Rich Mix community arts hub in London, said: “Artrix is a wonderful asset to Bromsgrove that, like local community arts venues everywhere, is facing up to some significant challenges. “We hope and believe that as a group of experienced people in the local community and beyond, we can help the trustees get this superb venue back up and running again and doing what it was built to do: provide a great

space for culture and the arts in Bromsgrove.” The chair and vice chair of the holding trust, Margaret Sherrey and Stuart Laverick, have oversight of the work of the group. Margaret added: “We are delighted to welcome this expertise and advice from both the arts sector and the community served by Artrix into the project. “As trustees we want to ensure we are making the most well-informed decisions on Artrix that we can. Engaging with experts and the community is an essential part of that, as we aim for a new, sustainable, community arts operation at Artrix. Their advice will be invaluable.” The trust has been working on a new future for the Slideslow Drive venue since the start of the pandemic when its previous operator went bust as theatres across the country temporarily closed. In the meantime, the building continues to be used by the NHS as a temporary mass vaccination centre and has won £615,000 funding for green energy upgrades.

Friendly community band spans the generations

B

lackwell Concert Band is a friendly community band which rehearses in Catshill Methodist Church every Thursday evening.

In addition to having 70 members, whose ages range from 12 to 90, in the main band there is also a training programme which provides opportunities for youngsters to experience the fun of playing music together. Pre-covid, the band regularly played in different bandstands in parks including Evesham, Droitwich Spa and Sanders Park in Bromsgrove. It also plays at beer festivals and formal events including weddings. Having not been able to play as a full band for 18 months, it was a real treat to play in Sanders Park on Sunday, August 15th between 2.30 pm and 4.30pm. The session was free for everyone, and as well as many people enjoying the park grounds and the children’s play equipment, it was lovely to have a large local audience who brought their own chairs to sit on and listen to the varied musical programme. It was great to see so many people listening and the applause and cheering encouraged members to play as well as they could. The band plays a large variety of numbers across the musical genres and the Sanders Park reper toire had 19 pieces including the Avengers theme, Baba Yetu, Eighties Flashback, Hot Hot Hot, I Believe, Moon River and a sing along favourite Sweet Caroline. If you would like to find out more, search for Blackwell Concer t Band on Facebook. The page includes photos, videos, events and additional posts. Hopefully Completely Bromsgrove readers will be able to see the band in person soon and members will be happy to tell you how fantastic it is to be able to play live music locally.

Midlands football legend to be honoured with peace field site

A

unique Duncan Edwards Peace Field Plaque is to be unveiled at the Dell Stadium in Brierley Hill, Dudley on Thursday, November 11 when the site will be twinned with designated areas of play at the Flanders Peace Field in Mesen, Belgium. In the week leading up to Christmas 1914, German, British and allied soldiers stopped fighting to sing festive songs. On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, some ventured into no man’s land to exchange gifts and to play games of football. Today the truce is remembered as a symbolic moment of peace and humanity. Private Sidney Edwards, uncle of the former Manchester United and England legend, served in the 9th Worcester Battalion during World War One and was killed in 1917 in Kut al-Amara, Mesopotamia, now part of Iraq. He is remembered on the Dudley World War One Memorial. As part of an initiative by the National Children’s Football Alliance, there are 39 peace pitches across five continents in countries including the USA, Argentina, Ghana, Israel and Australia.

a schoolboy. Also paying tribute to the iconic duo will be members of Aston Villa’s European Cup winning squad of 1981-82 including skipper Dennis Mortimer, Tony Morley, Colin Gibson, Jimmy Rimmer and Gordon Cowans. A large collection of George Best memorabilia will be on display relating to Best’s glittering football career as well as his impact on the Swinging Sixties football scene. For more information and to book tickets for the dinner, contact Jim Cadman of the Duncan Edwards and Bestie75 Tributes on 07971 624627 or email jwc@duncanedwardstribute. com

Here in the UK, a ¬partnership has been formed with three other Peace Field projects - George Best (Belfast), Denis Law (Aberdeen) and Sir Tom Finney (Preston) and football teams representing each will play inthe Peace Field Tournament at the Dell Stadium every year. The theme of this year’s dinner will be‘The Icon and The Prince’ and the event will mark what would have been the 85th birthday of Edwards and George Best’s 75th birthday. AVONCROFT CRICKET CLUB

A winning end to a mixed season

T

here was an exciting end to the season at Avoncroft Cricket Club, with the 1sts going in to their final game of the season knowing that a win was required to avoid relegation into Division 4 for the first time since 2003. Local rivals Redditch 2nds were the visitors to Croft’s Stoke Heath ground and, despite the tense circumstances, the players stepped up to the mark with one of their best performances of the season. Captain Josh Cound led the way with 5 wickets as Redditch were bowled out for 122 before Joe Ingle (31) and Ben Warwick (35*) eased Croft to a 7 wicket victory. The win was enough to take the 1sts up to 9th in the final table, a position which was probably reflective of a season where consistency proved to be the biggest challenge for the team. Similar things could be said of the 2nd and 3rd XIs, who both finished mid-table in 6th and 4th respectively, although with the number of new, junior players filling the ranks, these sides can be very pleased with the season’s efforts. On an individual front, the club will be honouring this year’s outstanding performers at their annual presentation evening on 2nd October.

The success of the club’s junior players was something very much celebrated in 2021. Harvey Shaw, Jack Wright, Matt Athey and Harry Stone all notched up their first half-centuries in adult cricket, whilst Matt Croal achieved his own accolade with the ball with his first senior 5 wicket haul. In the junior competitions, Croft’s U10s took the plaudits by winning their league and finishing runners-up in the County finals, whilst many of the other sides held their own against some of Worcestershire’s strongest clubs. Croft’s band of willing volunteers will now turn their attention to the various jobs needed to close down the club for the season. The life of a village cricket volunteer is rarely recognised but absolutely vital in keeping the club going, so we thank everyone who has given up their time this year to make 2021 such a success – your suppor t is very much appreciated!
