Welcome to the September issue of Completely Bromsgrove I would like to star t by giving a warm welcome to The Dry Spy in St John’s Street, which opened its doors at the end of July. If you enjoy a cocktail or two and some tasty small plates, then this is the place to go. Another relatively new business to the High Street, is Butchers’ Block, who held their third bir thday celebrations on August 7th and raised £1,000 for two local charities, Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide Bromsgrove and North Worcestershire Basement Projects. The day was a huge success and well done to Lilith and Michelle and everyone who got involved to help raise vital funds for these amazing causes. If you are passionate about Bromsgrove, enjoy writing poetry and would like to feature in a short film performing your own poem, WORDS of Bromsgrove would love to hear from you. A message from our MP

F

irstly, I would like to congratulate all of the fantastic athletes who represented Team GB at the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo. In the most difficult of circumstances, they achieved so much and made us all incredibly proud. The courage and determination they demonstrated will certainly inspire future generations, and I look forward to Birmingham hosting the 2022 Commonwealth Games, with all the opportunities that will bring to our area. Backing local businesses is so important, that’s why I was delighted to visit the new business support centre at Bromsgrove Library recently. Providing support through public libraries breaks down barriers to anyone thinking of star ting or wanting to take their business to the next level. I would cer tainly encourage anyone who has a bright idea for a business to explore the free services available through the Business & IP Centre. Alongside recent surgery visits, I have also met with the leaders of Worcestershire Acute Hospital Trust. It was a productive meeting, and I will be working with colleagues to suppor t residents on the issues raised. Furthermore, it was also useful to meet with the Leader and Chief Executive of Bromsgrove District Council, where we covered a range of local issues and how best we can work together to support residents. I also had the oppor tunity to visit Severn Trent Water at their local plant in Stoke Prior. It was encouraging to hear about their recovery and

regional investment plans, as well as their enthusiasm for backing apprentices and graduates through the Kickstar t Scheme. More than 86 million vaccinations have now been administered across the UK. Every adult has been offered at least one dose, and over 38 million second doses have been administered. We also continue to make good progress in Bromsgrove District. 88% of residents over 18 had received their first dose of the vaccine by the beginning of August. Fur thermore, 77% of people had also received their second dose. Vaccines are our wall of defence against this virus and have saved thousands of lives, as well as preventing millions of infections. If you haven’t already, please do your bit and get your jab! I hope you and your family enjoy the rest of August. Barnt Green boutique is perfect fit for Julie

L

eaving a high level, salaried role behind to become your own boss is a dream for many people that often doesn’t progress beyond the fantasy stage. Julie Archer made that bold step nearly four years ago and has never been happier. Her independent, female led, size inclusive boutique, The Style Lounge Company in Hewell Road, Barnt Green, has gained a discerning clientele who appreciate the personal touch and can draw upon Julie’s vast experience of the retail sector. Always passionate about women’s fashion and customer service, Julie’s career journey began as a Saturday girl and she progressed through various levels of management to become retail director of a women’s fashion chain. After being store manager, area manager and regional manager, she was responsible for 350 stores and concessions nationwide. Other achievements included launching a childrenswear range for Morrisons. However, despite all her successes in the sector, Julie was aware that the future of retail - and the High Street – looked increasingly uncertain due to the arrival of online shopping and companies such as ASOS. “I guess things changed in my life too,” she recalled. “I still loved my job and had reached senior level so leaving always seemed like a big gamble. But I realised that if I said ‘no’ at this point then I’d never do it.” Julie began searching for the right location and the unit in Barnt Green fitted the bill. “Premises in Barnt Green don’t come up very often so I took redundancy and started to look forward to managing the end to end process from sourcing and buying stock to using all my retail experience to provide excellent customer service. “I really wanted to build my own brand. The first thing I did was to completely design the shop fit. I had the vision and things grew organically, which they should do because it feels more authentic and real.” The Style Lounge Company began to host regular ‘fizz’ events, offering carefully chosen groups the chance to enjoy a leisurely drink and try on some clothes. Julie’s wide network of friends also helped to spread the word. The store opened in late autumn 2018, a traditionally good time for retail with Christmas looming, and Julie also spent time building up its online offering and Facebook and Instagram presence. “Setting up the online store was tough and didn’t work on the first website we had so we moved to a different platform,” said Julie, who recently recruited an e-commerce and social media assistant via the government’s Kickstar t Scheme which provides funding to employers to create jobs for 16 to 24-year-olds. “I’d definitely recommend the scheme to employers as it offers great support to get young people into work.”

Simon Creed appointed as Theatre Director

T

he world’s leading operator of live entertainment venues, Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG) today announces the appointment of Simon Creed as Theatre Director at The Alexandra, Birmingham. Simon joins The Alexandra at a hugely exciting time for the Second City venue, which earlier this week spectacularly reopened its doors following a 491-day hiatus due to the pandemic. The dynamic venue welcomed an audience of around 800 for a performance of Anton & Giovanni – Him & Me featuring Strictly Come Dancing stars Anton Du Beke and Giovanni Pernice. As The Alexandra prepares to stage an extravaganza of musicals, shows and plays in a bumper schedule for the remainder of the year, a vastly experienced Simon cannot wait to take the reins. Over the past 25 years Simon has worked for some of the best arts and entertainment venues and organisations in the Midlands including Alton Towers, Birmingham Hippodrome, Midlands Arts Centre, Birmingham Town Hall/Symphony Hall and Roundhouse Birmingham (National Trust/Canal & River Trust). Simon, originally from Cardiff but now living in Bromsgrove, said: “Becoming Theatre Director at The Alexandra is a fantastic opportunity and I’m confident I can rise to the challenge. Autumn is a-blazing

H

ave you noticed the nip in the air, morning dew on the leaves? Autumn is shifting its stride, bearing down on us with its flamethrower of tints and hues.

Just because summer flowers are waning doesn’t mean the end of the stunning displays in the garden. Just a little thought when plant purchasing and your garden can maintain colour right through to winter. There are plenty of plants that give a glorious floral show throughout spring and summer and then really come into their own when September comes to call. I was in a garden centre and I saw a leafless bush with almost fluorescent purple berries and knew that I needed to add it to my winter display. Welcome to Callicarpa, the Beauty Berry Bush, lovely green leaves and dark stems with shocking bright purple berries all winter long. Early summer flowers are delicate, white and veil-like. Definitely worth a place in any winter border. Lets not

forget the dogwoods, yellow and red striking stems, adding drama to any border. If its floral display you are after, try asters, small daisy-like heads of vibrant blue and pink that will reward you from August to October. To really lift the border try the orange hue of rudbeckias (shown above) and multi coloured chrysanthemums, these will last until the first frosts in October. Pack a punch to your pots with Japanese anemones, sedums and Michaelmas daisies, add ornamental cabbage and kales, which have red or white leaves that become more vibrant as the temperatures drop; hardy cyclamen, autumn crocus plus the soft wisps of ornamental grasses. Skimmia keep the evergreen foliage and berries all winter, so combine this shrub with your spring bulbs to continue the interest.

Garden jobs for September Continue to keep the garden tidy, start by clearing away any dying foliage and flowers.

Clear leaf debris from the pond and leave on the side for a few days to allow pond life to crawl back into the water. Sow cabbage and spinach now for picking next spring. You will need to cover the spinach with fleece from October onwards. Radishes mature in just a couple of weeks, so it’s worth sowing a late batch of seeds now, for a late crop.

Spring flowering bulbs should be planted now ready for blooms of daffodils, crocus, tulips and fragrant hyacinths. To make your pots bulge with bulbs, plant a double or even triple layer, sandwiching smaller bulbs on top of layers of larger bulbs such as hyacinths, daffodils and tulips. Garlic can be sown any time between now and spring.

hen choosing bathroom tiles there are so many to choose from it can be a minefield but having been in the business for such a long time we know there are some firm favourites which are popular year on year then there are trends which become popular due to the improving technology allowing new patterns and textures to be created.

Marble is a timeless classic which provides an elegant yet contemporary look, of course real marble comes at a huge cost so with so many marble effect tiles which are surprisingly similar it provides a great option. Marble is available in both large format and smaller tiles and can be used on both walls and floors; the Eruption range is increasingly popular. As they tend to be neutral in colour, this allows diversity in colour schemes to be used to brighten up the room.

KBB partner with local business

C

ommunity group Keep Bromsgrove Beautiful are moving forward with an initiative to partner with local businesses in a bid to get more people to support the ethos of the group and keep their neighbourhood tidy.

Since the group began in 2018, the main thrust of activity has been litter picking by groups, schools and individuals, with an impressive result, and as we come out of the pandemic the time feels right to encourage businesses to join in local activities. The first business to sign up to support Keep Bromsgrove Beautiful is Stoke Prior based accountants Jerroms, who have invested in branded litter picking kit and held group clean-up activities around their office. The Jerroms team not only cleared the area by their office of unsightly litter, but also the industrial estate and private car parks used by local businesses along Hanbury Road and Stoke Pound Lane. The team collected 16 bags of rubbish, which were separated between recyclable and non-recyclable items. Tom May, Jerroms Client Director said: “Not only is litter an eyesore that makes our local areas look untidy and uncared for, but it can also have devastating impacts on local wildlife. Over the last year, we have all come to appreciate our local environment even more and to enable us to continue to do so, it is important that we all play our part in ensuring it is kept tidy and litter free. By working together, and supporting Keep Bromsgrove Beautiful, we can make a difference. I am so proud that the Jerroms team have been able to give something back.” Research shows that more than two million pieces of litter are dropped in the UK every day, with an annual cost to taxpayers of over £1 billion a year. Just think of where this money could be spent in our communities if people disposed of their rubbish responsibly. romsgrove residents scooped three of 12 winning places in our photography competition this year. One also beat off stiff competition in a public vote to win the overall prize - their image taking pride of place on the front cover of our 2022 calendar. Our annual photo competition has been running for more than 10 years and judges had an even harder time than usual this year with bumper entries – more than 400 images from over 80 photographers. Winning images feature in our calendar and our 2022 edition is packed with photos of wildlife and wild places. This year’s overall winner of a pair of grebes ‘dancing’ was taken by Rebekah Nash of Catshill. This behaviour is seen in early spring as these beautiful water birds undertake an elaborate courting ritual of head-shaking, diving and presenting each other with weed whilst rubbing their bellies together. Rebekah has been watching grebes for years and managed to take the winning shot at Arrow Valley. She commented “Three hours I sat and watched them courting, then they both dived and this happened, magically, right in front of me.” Last year’s overall winner, Bromsgrove’s Richard Clifford, also featured in this year’s final line-up. Richard’s beautifully back-lit image of wood ants feeding on honeydew from aphids was taken early in the morning at a local nature reserve. Richard often gets up early to head out and photograph wildlife; on this particular morning he was searching for roosting damselflies but got distracted by a colony of wood ants. Bromsgrove resident David Cole was visiting nearby Hanbury Hall when he spotted a grass snake making the most of one of the ponds. In David’s own words “…[it] suddenly swam up to the bank and poked its head

out of the water just long enough for me to compose myself and capture a few images.” Not everyone carries a camera and many people don’t have the time or inclination to patiently wait for wildlife to appear in the right place at the right time. Almost all of us, however, can watch wildlife – whether it’s peering through a window at the birds in the trees opposite, watching the bees in your garden or heading to a local greenspace to spot what’s about. Watching wildlife can help us to relax – keeping us in the moment and helping us to connect to the bigger world that surrounds us and keeps us going. Our next photo competition will be open for entries later this year so until then, take some time to watch wildlife and don’t forget to keep a camera close at hand…just in case! ompletely Bromsgrove had the pleasure of attending the official opening of the exciting new roaring 20s themed cocktail bar The Dry Spy on July 23rd.

The evening was a roaring success. Champagne was served on arrival then guests enjoyed delicious food and cocktails with entertainment provided by The Electro Swing Project.

With new dishes and cocktails being developed on a constant basis no matter how many times you visit there will always be an element of surprise.

Bromsgrove Court Leet Baliff Jo Slade accompanied by Town Crier Kevin Ward and guest of honour, former jockey and one of the UK and Ireland’s most successful racehorse trainers Jonjo O’Neill, officially declared The Dry Spy open.

Whether you visit during the day or evening, you will be transported into a world of theatre as the staff have been carefully chosen to reflect the underworld of the roaring 20s. The Dry Spy is all about luxury, flamboyance, attention to detail, first class service and a sense of being transported back into a time when people played and partied hard.

Located in St John Street, The Dry Spy takes its name from the prohibition era in the USA in the 1920s. George Cassiday, who was nicknamed the man in the green hat, was a bootlegger who sold alcohol to representatives from rooms in the House and Senate office buildings. He was eventually bought to justice by an FBI agent known only as The Dry Spy. Owners of The Dry Spy Alan Nolan and Jack Thomas, assisted by project manager Dean Brady and development manager Chloe Nordigian, have been hands on when it comes to all aspects of this intriguing new establishment, from the name through to the décor and hiring the 30 plus local staff. The team has also sourced local produce for the small plates on offer created from scratch by chef Carl Weaver with Worcestershire producers such as The Butcheress Stoke Prior and Woodcote Brewing Co in Dodford. Spirits including gins and vodkas are turned into the most amazing cocktails, overseen by general manager Micky Pearson.

All of the companies involved in the transformation are local which is in keeping with the ethos of the owners’ commitment to the town where they live and to promoting local skills. The Dry Spy will be offering monthly event evenings and special events such as Ladies Day at Royal Ascot, motor racing and golf will all be shown on their large flat screen television. There are also areas that can booked for private parties, who will receive excellent service from the experienced staff. Here at Completely Bromsgrove, we would like to wish The Dry Spy a long and flourishing life on the food and drink scene and thank the owners for bringing a certain je ne sais quoi to the town.

Barbecued Cod Loin Fillets in a Spiced Yoghurt Marinade

Serves 4

Ingredients: For the cod loin fillets: 50 g natural yoghurt 2 tablespoons lemon juice 2 tablespoons olive oil 3 tablespoons Kikkoman Naturally Brewed Soy Sauce 2 teaspoons apricot jam A few lemon thyme leaves ½ teaspoon curry powder Freshly ground pepper 4 cod loin fillets (approx. 150 g each) For the lime and coriander aioli: 1 small, organic lime 2 garlic cloves 150 g mayonnaise 1–2 tablespoons honey A few coriander leaves, chopped 1–2 tablespoons Kikkoman Naturally Brewed Soy Sauce Freshly ground pepper For the barbecued sweet potatoes: 800 g sweet potato 4 spring onions 1 garlic clove 3 tablespoons Kikkoman Naturally Brewed Soy Sauce 4 tablespoons olive oil A few rosemary needles Freshly ground pepper

Method: 1. To prepare the marinade, mix together the yoghur t, lemon juice, olive oil, soy sauce, jam, thyme, curry powder and pepper. Brush the fish fillets with the marinade and put in the fridge for around 30 minutes until you’re ready to star t the barbecue. 2. Prepare the lime and coriander aioli by washing the lime under hot water, then patting it dry. Grate off some of the zest, cut the lime in half and squeeze out the juice. Peel and finely chop the garlic. In a bowl, mix together the mayonnaise, lime zest and juice, garlic, honey, coriander and soy sauce, seasoning to taste with pepper. 3. Peel the sweet potatoes, wash and cut into approx. 2 cm dice. Clean the spring onions, slice and wash. Peel and finely dice the garlic. Mix together the garlic, sweet potatoes, spring onions, soy sauce, olive oil and rosemary, seasoning with pepper to taste. 4. Place the sweet potatoes on the barbecue for approx. 15-20 minutes and cod fillets on the barbecue for approx. 6-10 minutes depending on the heat (closing the lid, if your barbecue has one). Serve with the lime and coriander aioli. Tip: The marinade tastes just as great with other white fish as it does with turkey breasts or steaks. Preparation time: approx. 10 min. + marinading time. East Midlands singing sensation Lizzy Rushby wowed the crowds with her array of sing along favourites that kept the crowd smiling despite the unseasonable rain. Lil’s Baps were back on Bromsgrove Market for the day as she swapped her popular street food dishes for charitable donations. A raffle and guess the weight of the cake competition helped to boost the total. Midlands food producers The Tewkesbury Mustard Company and Loopy’s Pickled joined in the celebrations with some fantastic tasters for passersby - both work exclusively with Butchers Block - and local hairdressers Hairs & Graces generously provided a voucher prize for the raffle. “It was great to be back out on the market doing what I do best,” said Lilith Holsey-Sheppard. “Every year the community blows us away with its support for local causes and we want to thank everyone who helped us reach our goal of £1,000 this year.” Butchers Block started the annual fund-raising event on their first birthday. “We wanted to give a little something back to the community that has stuck with us ever since we took over the business,” said Lilith’s wife Michelle. “Every day we go home with huge smiles on our faces, which says it all really!” This year the funds raised will be divided between Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide Bromsgrove and North Worcestershire Basement Projects, also based in Bromsgrove. Human cells communicate A

re you aware that your cells actually communicate with each other? The health of this communication network impacts your immune system and, in turn, your overall health.

This communication between cells is called REDOX Signaling and like me, you had probably never heard of it, right? When I first learned about it, I was blown away by how vital this signaling process is to our health. Some in the scientific community knew about redox signaling molecules early last century. Enterprising efforts C

ongratulations to Bromsgrove School’s Young Enterprise Team ‘Symplex’ who won the Creativity in Business and Overall Winner prizes at the Worcestershire Company of the Year Competition.

The students had created a product based upon the challenges faced by working from home. Their product, the ‘OrganiSTATION’ is an innovative wooden display stand to hold stationery and other essential items. The team pre-empted that most of their selling would be online this year as opposed to the traditional method of selling at trade fairs and thus provided a solution for this in creating a product that could be flat packed and posted easily. The team worked hard throughout lockdown and the enforced School closures, meeting online each Saturday and continuing their work once lockdown eased and they were all back in School. At the West Midlands Regional Finals the team faced tough competition but stood out to the judges for their incredible cooperation as a team. They were delighted to win the Teamwork Award and they were highly commended

for their ability to overcome the various challenges they had faced over the year.

Charissa Brobbey-Sarpong of Bromsgrove School has successfully auditioned with the British Youth Music Theatre and has been offered a place to perform in the Legend of White Bear Lake musicial this summer. Charissa has also recentlyl been instated as a Chorister at Worcester Cathedral.

Congratulations to the sixty-nine students at Bromsgrove School who completed the IB Diploma in 2021 with an extraordinary average score of 40.2. In this very difficult year, the School is delighted that 10% of the group achieved 44 or more points (the highest score available is 45). Four students achieved the coveted 45 point maximum; Leonie Sackers, Jolene Koh, Lucia Goodwin and Nic Bamberger and a further three students scored 44 points. All Bromsgrove pupils scored above the world average and forty three students achieved 40 or more points. Overall the average score achieved by this cohort of students is 40.1 which is equivalent to better than 4 A*s at A Level using the old UCAS tariff.

A new film celebrating Bromsgrove through poetry, called Poets of Bromsgrove, is to be produced and filmed by Maz Salmou, a former front line Syrian television reporter, with support from several Bromsgrove organisations and Bromsgrove District Council. The film aims to showcase the local talent for writing and performing poetry and will also feature Faith Taylor, the Bromsgrove-based winner of this year’s Young Poet Laureate competition for Worcestershire. WORDS of Bromsgrove is currently on the lookout for Bromsgrove-based poets of any age and level of experience who might like to be involved in this film, with filming taking place locally during October 2021. Choirs bounce back

“

S

ince singing be so good a thing”, said William Byrd in the 16th century, “I wish all men would learn to sing”.

Even back then, Byrd recognised the benefits of singing as he listed his “reasons to sing”. Nowadays a huge amount of research has gone into examining the health benefits of singing in a choir. Of course choirs have been amongst the hardest amateur groups hit by covid over the last 18 months. But local choirs in Bromsgrove are at last starting up again this Autumn. All the choirs who are members of Bromsgrove Arts Alive welcome new singers. None of them carry out auditions and there is no requirement to be able to read music. And all offer the opportunity to come along to try them out for a while before signing up! Ruth Henley, who runs Bromsgrove community choir says “2019 had been quite an exciting year for us as a choir. In July we took part in, what was for us, a big venture and challenge when we joined with other singers in the town to perform Zimbe by Alexander LeStrange and in November we celebrated 10 years as a choir by performing an Anniversary Concert at the Methodist Church. “These events were on top of our usual performances at the Library, Avoncroft and Meadows Nursing Home. At the star t of 2020 we were looking forward to another year of singing together but world events took over and, of course, we had to stop.

Babbling brooks

W

e have many watercourses in North Worcestershire over 80 named watercourses in fact, with around half of these flowing through Bromsgrove District.

Almost all the watercourses in Worcestershire flow towards the River Severn, eventually reaching the sea via the Bristol Channel. The tributaries of the River Rea (around Rubery) and River Cole (around Wythall) however flow towards the River Trent, and reach the North Sea via the Humber Estuary. Some watercourses have names which reflect the location of the source or the underlying geology, such as the Marl Brook in Marlbrook. Some aren’t officially named on OS maps but have had the same name locally for decades, and other minor tributaries are given unofficial names by us, often reflecting the name of the local area - such as the Burcot Brook or the Tardebigge Brook. Others have much more obscure names which have interesting background when you start looking into their meaning - we thought we’d share a few here. The River Salwarpe is a derivation of the historic word “sal” meaning salt, and “weorp” meaning to throw up; referring to the salt deposits around Droitwich through which the river flows. The Spadesbourne Brook has a descriptive name “spades” relates to the river flowing in spate - rising rapidly during intense rainfall, and “bourne” suggests that the brook dries up seasonally. This isn’t the case nowadays due to the many outfalls from storm water drains into the brook, but historically may have been. Other watercourses such as the Elmbridge Brook and Callow Brook have names which describe the area through which they flow; Elmbridge suggests an area populated with elm trees, possibly along a ridge, and Callow comes from an Old English term referring to an area lacking in vegetation or a bare hillside. The Battlefield Brook is understood to have got its name from a battle in the area however the exact date of this is not known, with some sources suggesting it was during the Battle of Worcester in the 1600’s but others suggesting it may have preceded this by several Centuries. Looking slightly further afield locally, Stour is derived from the Anglo Saxon “stur” meaning river, and Arrow comes from a Celtic term meaning stream, which explains why so many rivers across the Country share these names. New Hub in Droitwich Spa with arts theme A

new venue, The Hub, is an initiative by MAPP (who manage St Andrews Square in Droitwich) and the Landlord, to transform a once empty retail unit into a community hub. Droitwich Arts Network has created a welcoming environment embracing a variety of forms of art. The Hub is a comfortable and attractive space for the community, encouraging a sense of wellbeing. The space is flexible and can provide display facilities for local artists, crafts people, and schools; and offer space hire for meetings, classes, and small music and drama performances. The town centre has gained a facility that did not exist previously. The Hub is attracting visitors and increasing the footfall in St Andrews Square. It is also hoped this will enhance reputation of St Andrews Square as a commercial centre with community values. The Hub opened for normal activities on Friday 25th of June under Covid-19 restrictions. The first two days were very successful and resulted in the sale of six pictures and two items of craft work. Current plans are that the Hub will open every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 10am to 3.30pm. Local MP Nigel Huddleston dropped into the Hub during the first day of opening. Nigel commented “What an incredible variety of high quality art is on display, and most of it is available for purchase at reasonable prices. I was really pleased to meet some of the local artists when I visited. I encourage residents to make use of this new facility and I look forward to popping in again soon”. Lead volunteer from Droitwich Arts Network, Rhys Jones, added “The Hub is a fascinating collaboration between big business and a local not

for profit arts group, and has regenerated a retail unit that has been empty for a number of years”. A formal Opening Event, delayed due to Covid-19 restrictions, was held on the 13th of August. The Mayor of Droitwich Spa Councillor William Moy cut the ribbon and declared the Hub “Open”. The Hub is located near the entrance to St Andrews Square from St Andrews Street, and is opposite “Mr Harry” hair salon. Droitwich Arts Network promotes and collectively champions all forms of art in and around Droitwich Spa. The scope of the network includes visual arts, performing arts, photography, media, written work, and crafts. We meet every month. Meetings often include presentations or performances by other artists. The network gives opportunities to share ideas, to be involved in Droitwich Spa events, festivals, various projects, and activities. Bromsgrove Society Autumn Talks season A

s we approach Autumn, the attention of the Bromsgrove Society turns to the new season of local history and local interest talks.

For a number of reasons, the team at the Society have made the decision to hold the talks online, using the Zoom platform, until at least the end of the year. During the past year the online talks attracted an audience of over 100, tuning in from their local, national and international homes. The Autumn Season talks will take place on Tuesdays, at 7.30pm. Talks are free to attend, although donations are welcome. Registration is required in advance of the talk.

The Hedgelayers’ Walk F

ancy some exercise? If so, the sleepy parish of Dodford has much to offer in the form of three signposted historic trails, known as the Royal Hunters’ walks.

At 5 miles, the Hedgelayers’ Walk is the shortest of the three. It star ts in Sanders Park, from the information board at the far end of the car park. From here follow the path out of the park, across Whitford Road and up Timberhonger Lane, passing under the M5 motorway. The hedgerow along Timberhonger Lane is predominantly hazel, also known as the cobnut, and is grown as much for its edible nuts as for hedging. Hazel produces thin flexible rod useful for woven fencing and diviners’ rods and was once of great economic impor tance. Past Tickeridge Farm the path turns right across fields to Monsieur’s Hall Lane. Here we pass a series of farms, the most distinguished of which is the old farmhouse known as Monsieur’s Hall. The fabric of this building has been altered frequently over the years. The identity of the original ‘Monsieur’ is open to question, as some say the name is a corruption from ‘Mountshier’s Hall’.

At the end of the lane, we cross the Kidderminster Road and proceed past Battlefield Farm and through the car park of the Park Gate Inn. The Park Gate is one of Bromsgrove’s more recent hostelries, having become a beerhouse only in the late 19th century. The name derives from the entrance to the deer park which once thrived to the north of Grafton Manor. The Hedgelayers’ Walk proceeds across fields, crossing Fockbury Road, and down to a stream where the Char tists’ and Foresters’ walks diverge. Take one of these, if you’re feeling energetic, as they rejoin the Hedgelayers’ Walk later on. Our route follows the stream to Alfred’s Well Lane. If you’re peckish, turn left to seek refreshments at the Dodford Inn but the main trail proceeds right, up the hill to Alfred’s Well. Originally, there was a large farm here, which in the tithe survey of 1839 was owned by Samuel Huskisson, who let it to a Francis Peace as a tenant.

Around this time, some of the cottagers set up nailshops, serving master nailmakers in Bromsgrove and Halesowen. The Stourbridge glassworks also had outworkers at Alfred’s Well, as well as at Bournheath and Fairfield. From here the path winds its way across fields between Fockbury Farm and Fockbury Mill. Every parish needed at least one mill to grind the corn and Fockbury was the main mill for Dodford. Ancient documents, known as cour t rolls, name these millers

from as long ago as the 1400s. Like other tradesmen, they were frequently fined for overcharging. We’re on the return leg now. We pass Spout House and wind our way across the fields back to Battlefield Farm. After crossing the Kidderminster Road, we retrace our steps to Sanders Park, this time with panoramic views of the town in front of us. Bromsgrove falls silent for VJ Day

T

he Bromsgrove Branch of the Royal British Legion organised a parade and service of remembrance on Sunday 15th August to mark the 76th anniversary of Victor in Japan Day and the end of World War Two.

A lone piper led 13 standard bearers in a parade from Crown Close to the Burma Star Memorial where a crowd gathered. The town’s Royal British Legion Chairman Patrick Smith conducted the parade and the Town Crier Kevin Ward opened the service with a cry. Vicar of St John’s Church and the Bromsgrove Royal British Legion Chaplain Rev Ray Khan took the service and played the Last Post before the two minute silence was observed. Wreaths were laid at the Burma Memorial on behalf of Bromsgrove MP Sajid Javid, Bromsgrove District Council, the town and county’s Royal British Legion, the Burma Star Association, Far East Prisoners of War, the ExService Association, the Royal Artillery Association, Royal Army Medical Corps, the Royal Air Force Association (RAFA), the Yorkshire Regiment, Army Cadets, the Bromsgrove Court Leet, the Bromsgrove Society and the Guild of Town Criers. Two Burma veterans currently living in Bromsgrove attended the service

along with Brigadier Roger Brunt CBE DL, Vice Lord-Lieutenant and County President of Worcestershire Royal British Legion, Chairman of Bromsgrove District Council Rod Laight and representatives from local organisations. In the prayers given after the laying of wreaths Rev Ray Khan asked those gathered to vow to ‘strive for peace, heal the wounds and work for a just future for all humanity’. The lone piper led the 13 standards away from the memorial to conclude the service. Patrick Smith said “It was so lovely to have the support of the people of Bromsgrove at the service. It is one of the biggest turn-outs for VJ Day with 13 standards and more wreaths laid than usual, and a big show of public support. It was fantastic to see so many people paying their respects.” The Burma Star Memorial in Bromsgrove is the national epitaph to the Burma campaign of 1941 – 1945, dedicated to the memory of those who served and fell. It was unveiled on 16th May 1982.

Lammas Day Celebrations at Avoncroft

n Sunday 1st August, Bromsgrove Court Leet and the Rotary Club of Bromsgrove attended Avoncroft to celebrate Lammas Day.

Traditionally observed on 1st August each year, the day marked the beginning of the harvest, and celebrated the first wheat crop, or that of corn. It derives from the ancient English festival the “Gule of August”, a pagan dedication of the first fruits that the early English church later converted to Christian usage. On Lammas Day, loaves of bread were baked from the first-ripened grain and brought to the churches to be consecrated. The word “lammas” comes from the Old English hlaf, meaning “loaf,” and maesse, meaning “mass” or “feast.” Through the centuries, “loaf-mass” changed in pronunciation to Lammas.

He said “The 1820 Danzey Green Windmill is an iconic symbol for the Museum, and for Bromsgrove, and the Rotary Club is delighted to be supporting the efforts to maintain it. We were really pleased to be able to join the Court Leet and celebrate Lammas Day at the same time as presenting the donation to the team at Avoncroft.”

Following an announcement about the day from the Bellman and Town Crier Kevin Ward the Court Leet processed to the Bringsty Mission Chapel where the Bailiff offered a loaf at the altar. The bread had been freshly baked by Ealdorman Barrie Fischer. This symbolic offering of the bread at the chapel was followed by a visit to the working mill. Miller Michael Skoda was on hand to tell the group all about the flour mill, and to show the mill in operation – which created a lot of flour dust! Volunteers at the Toll House had been baking bread using the flour milled the previous day. The Bailiff conducted a traditional bread weighing and tasting ceremony where the duly elected Bread Weigher to the Court Leet, Tythingman Adrian Smith, found the bread to be of excellent quality, and fit for consumption by the people of the Manor. John Teece, President of the Rotary Club of Bromsgrove presented the Museum with a donation of

New film celebrates Bromsgrove’s poets

A

new short film about famous poets from Bromsgrove has been launched and is now available to view online.

Made by Maz Salmou, a Syrian filmmaker with a rapidly growing reputation and with a script by Kate Shaw of WORDS, the film features the work of four poets. • A.E Housman, the renowned author of A Shropshire Lad, whose statue looks down on Bromsgrove High Street.

It was sponsored by Bromsgrove District Council, WORDS, The Housman Society, The Bromsgrove Arts Association and The Bromsgrove Society as well as through individual donations. There will be a follow up film on the theme of Bromsgrove featuring the area’s young poets.

• Geoffrey Hill, born in 1932, who attended Bromsgrove County High School and became Professor of Poetry at Oxford University.

“This is an excellent film showcasing local talent and celebrating Bromsgrove and its poetic heritage,” said Margaret Evans.

• Molly Holden, who came to Bromsgrove in the 1950s and whose poetry was popular in the 1960s and 70s.

“Please get in touch if you feel you can contribute to the second film in the series, which will feature poems from our up-and-coming young poets.”

• Sally Purcell, who also went to the County High School. She was a serious poet who established a strong reputation in Oxford before dying at an early age in 1998.

Maz Salmou added: “I am very happy that I was part of this project as it is part of the history of Bromsgrove.

The film was initiated by Stewart Sanderson, former arts officer for Bromsgrove and Redditch Council, assisted by Margaret Evans representing Bromsgrove and Redditch Welcomes Refugees (BRWR) and Kate Shaw.

“I tried to use the experience and skills that I learnt in Syria, where I used to work as a TV reporter, to serve Bromsgrove and its locals because they mean a lot to me. n 27th July 2021 ERL launched Mount Battenhall, Worcester, their third retirement village with a number of special guests. The Right Worshipful The Mayor of Worcester, Councillor Stephen Hodgson and Georgina Britten-Long, the Great Granddaughter of the Hon. Alfred Percy and Maud Allsopp. Alfred Percy Allsopp acquired the property in 1890 intending to create a special home for his bride to be, Maude. ERL were extremely proud to present this stunning renovation, restoring Battenhall House back to its full glory. Without exception, the attending guests admired the beautiful building and exquisite landscaping.

During this extraordinary event each guest was welcomed by our amazing living statues and once inside the building, were greeted with refreshments whilst a string quartet played on the stage in the Music Room. Delicious canapés, all handmade by our Executive Chef from our retirement village in Chester – Boughton Hall, were offered and enjoyed by our guests.

AVONCROFT CRICKET CLUB

Mixed results as Croft battle off the pitch problems T

he last few weeks have been full of twists and turns for Avoncroft Cricket Club. The weather has been very mixed, giving many problems to ground advisor Mark Taylor. However, he and his team have come through with flying colours, the wickets have played well and the ground is still the one opposing teams enjoy visiting. A small outbreak of Covid amongst junior members caused considerable problems as several dads who are playing members had to isolate along with their sons. However, with the help of aged but willing members, the club managed to meet its playing obligations. Unfor tunately, the pavilion had to be once again placed out of bounds for players and visitors, although again Ian Atheyand Jenny and Andy Pittam provided excellent outside bar service. This was invaluable par ticularly on Friday nights when the club is so well suppor ted by many juniors and their families. On the field, results have been equally changeable. The third XI has topped its league for most of the season until a disappointing defeat at Droitwich Spa. A highlight has been the form of veterans Jason Huxley and Mark Wood. Both have been scoring runs consistently, with Mark making an astounding recovery from illness, returning with two 80s and a century. The seconds, frequently fielding a team with an average age in the teens, were in the doldrums for some time but have suddenly sprung to life with two excellent recent victories. Youth has been to the fore, with skipper Joe Ingle leading his team skilfully from

the front. Fifteen-year-olds Matt Croal and Matt Athey have been regular wicket takers while Harry and Harvey are showing great batting promise. The first XI has also gone through a rocky patch and slid rapidly down the table. The last two weekends though have produced a return to form with two terrific wins, without relying on the prolific Dan Elliot as the chief run scorer. The team has been bolstered by the dramatic return of another veteran, the gifted Duncan Roke who has missed most of the season after a knee operation. He smashed an astonishing 152 not out when leading the team to a great victory over league leaders Alvechurch, which has all but eliminated any threat of relegation. Finally, mention must be made of Avoncroft’s wonderful servant, treasurer and Sunday skipper Paul Athey. After years of batting at number 10 or 11, he promoted himself to open on a recent Sunday and proceeded to hammer 139 not out. Yet another veteran showing there is life in the old dogs yet!
