Welcome Welcome to the December/January edition of Completely Bromsgrove. So here we are, nearing the end of the year and Completely Bromsgrove publishing it’s 5th issue! What a year 2018 has been for us. This issue brings you an array of wonderful Christmas treats. Look out for our ‘Christmas Shopping in Bromsgrove’ feature, which highlights not only what a great shopping experience Bromsgrove has become over the past couple of years, but also how many Independent retailers we now have in the town. Karl Strawbridge from Wagon House Gardens gives us an insight into the history of the Christmas tree and of course we must congratulate all of the wonderful ladies and gentlemen who were involved in creating the amazing spectacle of Poppies outside the Methodist Church on Stratford Road, commemorating the heroes of World War One. Ladies, this one is specifically for you; our lovely contributor Jane Brook is calling for us all to ditch the little black dress this year and to colour up,

Remembering the brave A round 150 people braved the cold for the unveiling ceremony of the poppy cascade at Bromsgrove Methodist Church Centre.
Remembering the brave The town Crier, Kevin Ward, called us to order, the minister, Rev Richard Wilde, welcomed people and then Rev Ray Khan (St John’s CofE) bugled the last post, the Royal British Legion (Patrick Murphy) recited the Kohima Epitaph then after silence Councillor Caroline Spencer unveiled the display. It was a very moving occasion. Even as he spoke Mr Wilde could be seen struggling to hold back tears as it touched a poignant memory for him and everyone else possibly of a relative or friend who failed to come back from war or someone killed or injured at home. The primary focus was on the centenary of the armistice but the hope is that we will not just look back, but we shall also look forward and look around the world today. This is the hope of the team who co-ordinated the effort and its message which was captured on the banners, “Respect the Past - Pray for Peace”. The Church Senior Steward, who has done a great deal of work in the background was overwhelmed by the response across Bromsgrove and far beyond. “The minimum we hoped for was 6,600 in fact we have had double that number by now”. Packets delivered by hand, parcels by post from as far away as Sheffield and Cardiff to local villages and Bromsgrove. There was a slight variation in the shades of red, some were crocheted, most were knitted but not all the same pattern. Mr Wilde said, “I think the variety enhanced the meaning of the cascade. Being handmade each was created uniquely as was every person who has died in conflict”. It created a real buzz around Bromsgrove.

One passer-by asked for someone to watch the traffic so she could stand in the road to take a photo so keen was she to get it on Facebook for her family and friends. Many have commented on the inclusion of purple poppies for the horses and in his speech at the opening Mr Wilde referred to the loss of not only horses but many other domestic and wild animals with habitats destroyed. He said “The whole effort which has involved so many has been really worthwhile and will be talked about for a long time to come”.

Heroes of the First World War

s we commemorate the end of the First World War, it is timely to remember Bromsgrovians who served in this most brutal of conflicts.
Alfred Victor Williams of Rock Hill was mobilised on 4 August 1914, the day after war was declared. He joined the 1/3rd Battalion Monmouthshire Regiment and saw action in some of the most notorious campaigns of the war. The battalion was involved in heavy fighting around Ypres in 1915, including attacks on Messines Ridge. After a brief period of leave, Alfred returned to France and was killed near Combles on the Somme, on 30 January 1917. He is buried at Flers Cemetery. Harold Rose of Church Lane was another of those who answered the call. He had been a Bromsgrove Territorial and promptly enlisted in the Reserve when war broke out. Later he became an officer in the Worcestershire Regiment. In the autumn of 1917 he was posted to the Western Front where the Worcesters were involved in attacking fortified defences known as the Hindenburg Line. Harold was seriously injured at the battle of Cambrai and brought back to London for medical treatment. He died a month later and was buried in Bromsgrove, outside Cemetery Lodge, his childhood home. Of course, the fighting was not confined to the trenches. After serving with the Gloucestershire Regiment in France, Eric Guy Brookes signed up for pilot training and qualified

for the newly-formed Royal Flying Corp. By the spring of 1918 he was back on the front, flying a Sopwith Camel scout aircraft with 65 Squadron. He shot down his first enemy aircraft, an Albatros DV, near Albert in Belgium on 25 May. Many more followed and Eric Brookes gained a reputation as something of ‘an air ace’. But his luck did not last. He was shot down during a sortie north of Harbonnieres on 8 August and is buried in a cemetery nearby. One of the town’s most notable associations with the war is through Captain Noel Chavasse. Although not born here, he was a frequent visitor to his uncle Sir Thomas Chavasse, who lived at Barnt Green. After qualifying as a doctor, Noel joined the Royal Army Medical Corps and was awarded the Military Cross while serving near Ypres in 1915. In August 1916 he was awarded the Victoria Cross for saving around 20 men while wounded at Guillemont on the Somme. In the first attack of Passchendaele on 31 July 1917, Noel was hit in the head but refused to leave despite a fractured skull, venturing into no man’s land time and again to treat the wounded. He died on 4 August aged 32 and was awarded a second Victoria Cross for his actions. His headstone at Brandhoek Cemetery, Belgium is the only one in the world engraved with two VCs. Slow Cooked Curried Shoulder of Welsh Lamb Ingredients • 1 approx 2.5kg shoulder Welsh lamb • 15ml (1tbsp) oil • 1 onion, roughly chopped • 2 cloves garlic, chopped • 1” (2.5cm) piece root ginger, peeled and chopped • 30ml (2tbsp) garam masala or medium curry powder • 5ml (1tsp) chilli powder • 400g (approx) can chopped tomatoes • 400g (approx) can chick peas • 300ml (1/2 pint) lamb stock • 2 large potatoes, washed and cut into large cubes • 1 large handfuls Spinach
Method 1. Preheat oven to Gas 4, 180C, 350F. 2. Heat a large roasting pan on the hob and add oil, onion, garlic and ginger. Add the shoulder of lamb and brown well. 3. Add the spices and coat meat in them well. Add the tomatoes, chick peas, stock and potatoes. Bring to the boil, cover with foil and place in preheated oven. Cook for about 2 hours until the meat falls off the bone. Add the spinach in the last 10 minutes of cooking and allow to just wilt slightly. 4. Serve in chunks with Indian breads or steamed rice.

New girl on the block B
utcher’s Block on Bromsgrove High Street is under new management and took effect from August 1st. With a female butcher at the helm, we caught up with new owner, Michelle Holsey-Sheppard to find out a little more about her. How long have you been butchering for? I started in a butchers shop when I was 15, washing up after school and on Saturdays. From there it developed to me being in the shop part time, then full time and I have been butchering ever since. Why did you choose to own a shop in Bromsgrove? It actually just happened by chance. I live fairly locally and I’ve always worked in local butchers. I was looking for a new challenge and was offered a job at Butcher’s Block. The previous owner told me the lease was for sale, it’s always been a dream to have my own shop, so as a family, we bought the lease. Do you source your meat locally? What are your long term plans for the shop? We want to add a deli section, stocking produce from local suppliers. For us it’s all about what the customer wants so we are always adapting and adding produce. Eventually we would like to work with local businesses to offer food and drink pairing and taster sessions, so fingers crossed. Are you looking at introducing anything new for your customers? We already have! We create a lot of our own meat products and one thing that’s a big hit are our giant Meatballs. They are proving very popular and we are always looking for inspiration for new flavours.

t is thought that an inn of some sort has stood on the site where The Fox Inn at Chaddesley Corbett sits for at least 250 years, with the current building dating back as far as the late 1830’s. Celebrating W
e’ve been celebrating our 50th anniversary this year and what better way to do so than to honour a local hero and one of our founding fathers.
Fred Fincher MBE lived in Dodford for almost 60 years and not only helped to establish Worcestershire Wildlife Trust in 1968, he also donated what became our very first nature reserve. Earlier this year I was lucky enough to join the committees of our Bromsgrove and Wyre Forest local supporter groups at Randan Wood as they unveiled a plaque to Fred’s memory. Bromsgrove residents may remember Fred; he cycled everywhere and wrote the ‘In Field, Wood and Hedgerow’ column in the Bromsgrove Messenger for more than 30 years. To many people Fred was simply an extraordinary man and what he didn’t know about Worcestershire’s natural world wasn’t worth knowing; he kept journals of his natural history observations almost until he died in 1995. Whilst cycling around the lanes and roads near Bromsgrove in 1954, Fred discovered the jewel in Worcestershire’s meadows crown. The series of wildflower-rich fields at Eades Meadow and Fosters Green Farm, near Hanbury, where one farmer had resisted the wartime push for ploughing up hay meadows and pastures is now a National Nature Reserve. This fabulous place is home to more than 180 species of plant that support a wealth of insect, mammal and bird life.

50 years Fred lived in a bungalow in Randan Wood from 1934 and the woodland is probably one of Worcestershire’s best studied sites for fungi and more. In 1968, thanks to Fred’s generous donation, our first nature reserve was this semi-natural ancient woodland, a small part of what was once the extensive ancient hunting forest of the Forest of Feckenham. Not far away lie the two small fields of Randan Meadows that are dotted with anthills and have a most beautiful and ancient oak tree. In 1984 Fred was awarded an MBE in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the conservation and study of Worcestershire’s wildlife. Modern wildlife conservation in Worcestershire has been built from the foundation of his knowledge and the Trust has grown from this one small woodland to owning 100 patches of land with the support of more than 23,000 members and 400 volunteers. Whilst Randan Wood and Meadow are not open to the public, this is a great time of year to wrap up warm and head to nearby Chaddesley Woods (see August’s Completely Bromsgrove for more info). Our Bromsgrove local group holds evening talks once a month at Bournheath Village Hall; Christmas cards and calendars are sold to help raise funds for our conservation work.

Hedgehogs
- but which one is which?
W
e are becoming aware that the general public, and many organisations including the national press, cannot tell the difference between our native wild hedgehogs and hedgehogs bred for the exotic pet trade. This is causing many issues with social media and rescue units around the UK. The basic facts There are seventeen species of Hedgehogs in the world An African Pygmy Hedgehog (APH) is a purposely bred hybrid of the Algerian hedgehog found in central and eastern Africa and the Four Toed Hedgehog. Their natural habitat ranges from Grassland, Scrub areas to Savannah. Our native wild hedgehog The European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus), also known as the West European hedgehog, is native to Europe, In the UK it is protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act and cannot be owned. Our native hedgehog at this time of year will be getting ready to hibernate unlike the APH which needs a constant temperature of around 22°c. These pet hedgehogs will not survive if put into the wild and would find it very dangerous if allowed to go cold and hibernate in the UK. Both hedgehogs are nocturnal and omnivores and have spines. Our native hedgehog tends to be a lot bigger, on average an adult is around 600800g in weight but many reach over 1kg. The APH is a lot smaller with weights up to 700g.
Wild hogs have long legs with five long toes and claws which they need to dig for food, the APH have smaller legs, feet, claws and just 4 toes. Colour can vary a lot with the APH being bred to produce many different colours from pure white to every shade of brown, most will have white fur on their belly. In the wild our hedgehogs tend to be browns with the exception of our native Albinos and what we call blonde hedgehogs. APH also tend to have larger ears with two species having very large ears including the Egyptian long eared hedgehog and the Indian long eared hedgehog. At Willows rescue centre for native hedgehogs we do from time to time also have to rescue APH. Abandoned pets or owners just getting bored with them. We do not keep them as pets as both species should be kept apart from one another. We pass them onto a specialist who we know does not sell or breed from them. Sadly, these APH can be over bred by some, causing many health issues. A Pygmy hedgehog

A Garden of The year moves ever onwards towards the festive season with wreaths, trees and garlands all becoming available to decorate our homes and of course what greater symbol of Christmas time than the tree. Christmas trees come in all sizes and varieties. Norway spruce are the traditional trees that bring that Christmas tree smell into the house, Nordmann fir are the type that have become more fashionable as they do not drop their needles. Although Christmas trees have been used throughout Europe from the 15th century they have only grown in popularity in Britain since Victorian times when Queen Victoria married the German Prince Albert, many of the German festive customs came over to England with him and trees and the dressing of them with gifts and candles was one such tradition. We now seem to bring trees into the home from the beginning of December whereas on the continent they have the great festivity of the bringing in of the tree on Christmas Eve when they also exchange their gifts. Holly and Ivy were more traditional in the home in times gone by and were brought from the garden into the home as decoration to help celebrate the winter solstice festival.

Christmas Giving Ivy needs to cling to support itself and because it stays green throughout winter it led to the belief that it had mythical properties and became the symbol of friendship, marriage and support. While these beliefs in mythical powers have dissipated they both remain beautiful in fresh decorations. Wreaths are traditionally made from evergreens especially firs and are commonly used as a symbol of remembrance for the deceased, circular wreaths have no beginning or end, so they represent the eternal nature of faith, or the circle of life. Evergreens are used to represent victory over darkness as even in the darkest days of winter life carries on, the red berries of the Holly signify the drops of blood Jesus shed from the crown of thorns at the crucifixion. For most of the 20th century wreaths have been embellished with ribbons, bows, flowers and cones and more recently dried fruit and nuts. Todays wreaths are a wonderful decorative touch whether hung on the door to welcome visitors or to complete a rooms decor, with their splash of colour it is sure to add to a feeling of warmth and excitement for the coming season, Wagon House gardens at The Jinney Ring craft centre will have a selection of hand made luxury door wreaths and festive decorations for you to choose from and you will find something just a little different, there will also be a
selection of traditional grave wreaths, crosses and fresh posies all made fresh on site. Mistletoe the most romantic of decorations is a parasitic plant so it has no roots of its own but relies on its host plant for fluids and some nutrients. Mistletoe grows happily on apple trees so is abundant in apple orchards forming huge hanging bunches of green and white berries. Mistletoe and its uses predate Christianity so has Pagan origins, it was considered a masculine plant symbolising virility and carried the belief that it had mystical powers and even had the power and ability to start romance, and so this eventually started the custom of kissing beneath the mistletoe. Finally it may seem that our gardens are dormant over the festive season but things are growing beneath the surface, snowdrops, crocus all swelling and preparing to burst into life in the coming months. Bromsgrove Sporting Football Club F or Bromsgrove Sporting, last season looked to be a tough call after such a successful previous campaign but The Midland Football League Premier Division was duly won with games to spare this time under the leadership of manager Brendan Kelly after Paul Smith’s resignation part way through.
Sporting now play in the Evo-Stik South Division One Central and at the time of writing are second, one point ahead of Corby Town who have a game in hand. The season started well with an 11 - 0 win against Kidlington back in August and until a couple of weeks ago The Rouslers were undefeated in the league. However two crushing defeats of 5 - 1 and 6 - 0 to good teams in Bedford Town and Corby Town shows how tough this league is going to be. A 5 - 0 victory over neighbours Stourport Swifts in the Worcestershire Urn gave the team a boost in confidence and this was followed by a narrow defeat of Yaxley so hopefully the league season is back on the rails. Unfortunately other cup campaigns have not been as successful with Sporting being narrowly edged out the FA Cup, and League Cup by local rivals Alvechurch whilst Corby Town Trophy were the better team on the day winning the FA Trophy tie 3 -1. As well as the league and cup matches, Sporting also played a match against the RAF Senior Representative Team in memory of Thomas “Jonah” Jones who played for a number of Sporting’s junior teams and lost his life in tragic circumstances a few weeks ago. Shown below are fixtures over the next few months with particular interest being the game against Worcester City in the Worcestershire Urn on December 4th which although an away match will be played at the Victoria Ground owing to ground-sharing arrangements. Much of Sporting’s success has been built on the consistency and loyalty of local players of which all the back line have well over 100 appearances each for the Club. Add to that a large, loyal and noisy fan base that regularly sees record non-league crowds and a fabulous, friendly atmosphere at the Ground. Families are particularly welcome and the policy of admitting under 12s for free has been popular with youngsters often preferring a visit to the Victoria Ground rather than bigger clubs where they have more freedom to move around and easy access to the snack bar for the half-time chips whilst Mom and Dad have one of the award-winning pies. Although much of the focus is on the first team, Sporting also run an under-18s mid-week team and following a merger with Santiago Colts, all of their teams now play in Bromsgrove Sporting colours. They currently run teams from under 7s to under 16s as well as under 16s and 18s girls’ teams.

ith the dark nights drawing in, the cricket season seems a distant memory and yet it was less than two months ago that Avoncroft finished a successful season in fine style.
Having languished in 10th place at one point in June, the 1st XI got better and better as the year went on, winning their last 4 games to finish the season in 4th place. This upturn in fortunes was summed up by the final two games; firstly high-flying Harborne were dismissed for a lowly 38 as Croft stormed to a 10 wicket win before the batsman got in on the act in the final game, hitting Martley for 401-5 to clinch a 222 run victory. At the end of season awards night, Dan Elliott took the 1st XI batting honours with 505 runs at an average of 36 whilst Jon Hunter was recognised on the bowling front, taking 43 wickets at an average of 11. The 2nd XI were more consistent throughout the season and also finished in a very creditable 4th place thanks to 12 wins across the course of the season. Whilst there were a number of good performances, Chris Pitt’s 539 runs at an average of 32 provided the backbone of the side and allowed others to flourish. Special mention should also go to Dave Apperley, who in 5 innings scored 402 runs at an average of over 100! Martyn Cound took the bowling honours thanks to his 23 wickets and miserly economy rate, with Mark Wood taking the overall player of the year award for his allround effort of 294 runs and 26 wickets. The Sunday XI were very satisfied with their efforts, completing the set of 4th placed finishes in the Worcestershire Sunday League whilst also enjoying friendly fixtures against some longstanding foes. An overall record of 10 wins and 7 losses reflects their efforts, as does the positive progress made by several of the junior players. Dan Elliott completed his awards haul by walking away with the Sunday batting
honours as a result of his 572 runs at an average of 72, whilst youngster Max Jukes deservedly won the bowling award having led the attack with distinction, picking up 11 wickets at 23 in the process. Special mention also goes to Luke Warren, who picked up the club’s young player of the year award for his performances in the 2nd XI and Sunday sides. On the junior front, the season finished on a positive note with the Under 8s finishing runners up in the County finals, a great effort from all the boys and girls involved. Thoughts now turn to preparations for next year and top of the list of priorities is fundraising for new practice nets to provide better training facilities for the growing number of youngsters enjoying their cricket at Avoncroft. 1. The not LBD dress - We were told in the 90’s that everyone needed a Little Black Dress that could be worn reliably dressed up or down for any party occasion. Whilst only one in four of us actually suit black (Winter palettes), knowing what your wow colours are means you can step away from the fallacy that black makes everyone look slimmer and away from the LBD, and look fabulous wearing the colours that actually suit you. Alternatively, everyone suits primary red, so why not look for that LRD. 2. Go Eco - With the eco trend here to stay, whilst you might want a new outfit on your big night out, think can it be worn again and again? Recycling doesn’t just mean giving old outfits to your charity shop it means taking responsibility for the pieces we buy and ensuring we get great value and send less to landfill. 3. Flawless makeup is crucial to your look. The Christmas season may be the time when you try something a bit more out of your ordinary especially with nail art and a bright lip, but make sure you don’t look overdone. Flawless is key. 4. It’s all in the detail - Asymmetric necklines and ruffles are perfectly on trend this season, but detail on accessories, coats and jewellery can be game-changing for any outfit. Have the fun factor in the party season by wearing or carrying a statement piece in one of your wow colours, fabrics and patterns. 5. Accessories - Look out for stunning statement earrings and necklaces. Choose sparkle levels according to taste! Handbags have an edgy feel with unexpected shapes and fabrics while shoes offer a range of textures and finishes, from embellished velvet boots, to high shine court shoes and glitter ankle boots for those who dare. 6. Bold animal prints are a big trend this season from tiger, leopard and zebra to snake skin textures. Look out for

unexpected colourways, as well as the more traditional colours, for a contemporary feel in bags and shoes. 7. Dressing Up Asymmetric hems give the midi dress a modern twist with emphasis on waist-ties which can be worn with layers as the weather gets colder. Dark floral blooms are also a key look this season. Look out for unusual sleeve details such as puffs and ruffles on dresses and blouses. Knowing what styles and details suit you will make or break whether your outfit works. 8. Jumping Jack - If you want to wear something different, try a jumpsuit if it suits your body shape and style personality. Jumpsuits can be fitted or loose-fitting, patterned or in block colours. It’s not a look for everyone though, no matter how comfortable or chic it looks on someone else. 9. Materials - Look for embellished details in high shine satin and luxurious velvet fabrics in party wear. From chiffon dresses and blouses, to leather and knitwear and plush faux fur coats, take your pick as there is something for everyone. Create layers of texture for a contemporary feel. 10. Sequins. In a nod to the 1980s, this partywear trend features all over sequins and strong shoulder silhouettes acknowledging the excess of the era and bold style personalities. Statement sequin dresses or sequin tops, jackets or skirts with tailored trousers or knitwear give a more casual feel, tapping into the hi-lo styling trend we have seen for the past two seasons. This season sequins come in all shapes, sizes and finishes. Look out for sequin stripes too.

Are we losing the war on health?

ith winter fast approaching we are coming into the season of colds and flu symptoms and now is the time to start taking preventative measures. It is estimated that people suffering from the common cold and flu can reach up to a million throughout the world. However, with the mutations of the influenza virus it is becoming more difficult to treat and antibiotics are not having the influence they once had for many people. There are a number of different things we can do to help ourselves for example you have the flu jab route, the vitamin C route and the multivitamin route. Elderberries for example have long been used for its medicinal properties and as a natural remedy against colds, flu, pain, allergies, tiredness, constipation, and inflammation with a high concentration of vitamin C. Preparation: Boil the water and add the elderberries, ginger, and cinnamon and leave them to cook until the liquid is halved. Then, turn off the heat and mash the content and with the help of cheesecloth, strain the extract into a bowl. Add the honey and mix well. Pour the contents into a glass bottle. Keep it in a cool and dark area and take daily.
When you consume elderberries regularly, you will significantly strengthen your immunity and fight off infections. Elderberry supplementation can help you speed up the recovery of flu symptoms in a matter of days. new outdoor AstroTurf sports facility at Winterfold School, Chaddesley Corbett, near Kidderminster has opened its doors to community sports teams in the local area.
The new facility, which opened on November 5th features a full size, all weather floodlit 3G pitch and a separate, floodlit multi-use games area with two tennis/netball courts. The specialist synthetic ‘Evo Pro’ sports surface supplied by TigerTurf, is cited by them as an ideal turf for multi-sport facilities, suitable for a number of sports, including recreational football and hockey. This floodlit, synthetic surface extends the playing hours available during the winter months when grass pitches may otherwise be unplayable, and enhances the range of community facilities accessible at the School.

Protecting our historic waterways
T
he Canal & River Trust is about to start major works on a number of locks at Tardebigge as part of a 6 month long programme of repairs to waterways in England & Wales. Each winter the Trust, which cares for 2,000 miles of waterways, invests millions of pounds to restore some of the nation’s best loved canals. Skilled teams are out in all weathers replacing lock gates and restoring tunnels, bridges and canal walls. It’s all part of the charity’s work to ensure that waterways are running smoothly and can be enjoyed by boaters and local people alike. Research shows that being by a canal or river makes us happier and healthier, and people feel less stressed when they visit their local waterway. Locally the Trust will be replacing top and bottom lock gates at Tardebigge Lock 46 and repairing gates at locks 38 and 39. Work will also involve restoring historic brickwork, installing bollards for boats to moor at when waiting to use each lock and improving ladders which enable boaters to climb up out of the lock. Works are due to start in early November and last for around six weeks. As part of its maintenance programme, the Trust will be working on more than 180 different sites across the country between October 2018 and March 2019. The Trust makes all its lock gates by hand at specialist workshops in Bradley, near Tipton, and Stanley Ferry in Yorkshire. Adnan Saif, regional director for the Canal & River Trust in the West Midlands said; “This winter’s works are obviously important for encouraging boaters to visit the area but, with research telling us that waterways are good for people’s mental and physical wellbeing, they will also really benefit those living nearby, “Our waterways provide the perfect spots for recreation, exercise or just to unwind and so it’s important that we keep them open and safe for everyone to use. hat a busy 3 months it’s been since we announced the launch of our community group Keep Bromsgrove Beautiful in the June/July edition of Completely Bromsgrove!
Since then, we have held regular monthly litter picks in 4 Bromsgrove wards - Aston Fields, Charford, Sidemoor and Bromsgrove Central. We organised a litter pick at Sanders Park in September following the 50th Anniversary celebrations there, and most recently we supported a litter pick there again the day after the Bonfire and Fireworks night, helping the Parks Department clean up. Our Facebook Group has grown, and now has 379 members. It is a public group, so anyone can join us and then sign up to the litter picking events that way. However, I know that there are many unsung #litterheroes doing lots of great work keeping their Bromsgrove district neighbourhoods clean, so I invite them to advertise on our group page if they are running a litter pick anywhere in the district, and perhaps some of our group members will be able to come along and support. By no means do we hold the monopoly on litter picks – I look at the group and the page as a place where ANYONE who is doing something to clean up and keep Bromsgrove beautiful can find support, talk to other like-minded neighbours, and share what they are doing or ideas they have for the area. We now have a constitution (which is available to read on our Facebook group page), and we signed it at our inaugural AGM, held after the Sanders Park 50th Anniversary litter pick. And we have a logo, thanks to a member of our group, Mary Jephcott, and the company she co-founded, Digital Bite - www. digitalbite.co.uk We have received some funding from Bromsgrove South County Councillor Chris Bloore’s divisional fund, and recently were successful in our bid to the Bromsgrove District Council Small Grants Scheme through the Bromsgrove Engagement and Equalities Forum (whose meeting I attended in September representing Keep Bromsgrove Beautiful) - and we have been working with local businesses to source equipment and supplies which we will purchase for the group.
We’ve been working with the newly-set up Bromsgrove Friends of the Earth group - I am sitting on the steering group for its Plastic Free Bromsgrove scheme, and shared their stall at the Sanders Park 50th Anniversary event, where we worked hard to raise public awareness of litter and plastic issues. I am also excited to announce that we will be setting up an ‘Adopt-a-Street’ scheme, inspired by a super group based in Scotland called Leithers Don’t Litter. - www.leithersdontlitter.org Keep an eye out for the details when it is officially ready to go! So you can see, things have been progressing behind the scenes. I am really keen to get as many people involved with looking after their neighbourhoods as possible. My hope is that our group will be somewhere that people know they can come to to share ideas, seek support, and become part of a community that believes that change is possible, collaboration is the key, and #ItStartsWithUs. The Story of Finstall S
- the 1640’s to the 1940’s

everal people have said “why write about Finstall - nothing happened there”, but the more I looked the more I enjoyed reading about those who made the village what it is today.
In the 1640’s there was a surprising Finstall connection with the Civil War; early in the eighteenth century there was the Ellins family of Rigby Hall; later, there was flax and potato growing at the Oakalls and Slideslow. Wealthy men from the industrial Midlands came here to create their country estates - particularly the Brettells (Finstall Park) and the Albrights (Finstall Farm), who expanded their lands to Tutnall and Vigo. And there were two women who had a tremendous effect on the neighbourhood - Miss Catherine Albright and her niece, who many still remember, Miss Jocelyn. Little Finstall grew, but not much until the 1940’s, so the book travels from the tiny hamlet with just a blacksmith’s workshop on the Alcester Road and a few small farming dwellings. It tells the story of the Stud Farm, and goes on to the attractive village we have today with its Village Hall, the corner shop and the Cross Inn and, behind the main roads we know so well, the Dusthouse Lane and Pikes Pool Lane which still feel like true countryside. This is the fourth local history book that I have written. Victorian Greenhill was the first, when I discovered how
much I enjoyed finding out forgotten stories about the people who lived there and about the houses they built. The biography of Victorian John Cotton, Bromsgrove’s most important architect, with information about all his designs, was next in 2002. The third book was published in 2008, From Bromsgrove to Aston Fields. This covered the great Victorian expansion between the town and the railway station which changed the area, with the building of New Road, together with all the roads around - Marlborough Avenue, College Road, West, North, Central and East Roads, and at Aston Fields - Carlyle Road, South Road, and the rows of houses built for the workers at the Wagon Works. About this time Rev. Alan White wrote his book about Tardebigge, and another had been written about Burcot for the Millennium. But Finstall had not been included in any depth in any book, so I felt it important to find out more about the place; having lived there for over fifty years I already knew some of the stories, but realised there must be much more to tell. Which there was. So I have very happily spent the past two years visiting the Worcester and the Birmingham Archives, trawling through many websites, and speaking to people who have lived here for more years than me. I hope readers will find it as interesting as I did.

A historic tradition B
romsgrove Court Leet has existed since Medieval times when the Lord of the Manor owned all the local land and was answerable to the King. The Court Leet had jurisdiction over the people as a Court of Law and Punishment, imposing fines and imprisonment on offenders. This rule of law continued for many years throughout England, declining in the 14th century and replaced by The Magistrate’s Court with all legal jurisdiction removed from the Court Leet in 1977. In Bromsgrove today the Court Leet continues as a piece of living history and a source of pride for the town. Each year, at the Autumn Court meeting, a Bailiff and Reeve are elected by members of the court. The Bailiff is the head of the court, the Reeve acts as deputy. Members of the Jury and the Tythingmen are also sworn in and the positions of Ale Taster, Bread Weigher, Searcher and Sealer of Leather, Brook Looker and Carnitor of Flesh and Fish are appointed. The meeting is conducted by the Marshall of the Court with the Town Crier and Bellman to the Court on hand to make announcements. All proceedings are overseen by the Lord of the Manor.

For the coming year the Bailiff is Dr William Tucker and Reeve Miss Joanne Slade - the first female to hold the post in the 820 year history of the Bromsgrove Court Leet. In 1199 the first royal charter for a fair was granted to Bromsgrove by King John so that the people of Bromsgrove might ‘keep holiday and do honour to the patron saint of their parish of St John the Baptist’. Each year the Court Leet celebrates this event with a parade in town, the reading of the Charter and the Jury give the assizes relevant to their role - ale, leather, brooks, meat and bread. Next year the Fair Day will be held on Saturday 22nd June, and Ale Tasting events will be held during the year - all are welcome to experience these living history events.

t the Blue Cross, we know puppies, kittens and ponies can rank fairly highly on Santa’s lists, and as animal lovers, we get it! But after the high of the first snuggle, game, and adoring look from your pet, we also know becoming a pet-owner is a lifelong journey of responsibility. We want people to remember they’re becoming their pet’s guardian, looking out for its welfare for the whole of its life – it could be five years if it’s a guinea pig, 12 years for a dog, or 30 years for a horse. While we never rehome on impulse or to people wanting to give pets as a surprise gift, for some, the festive season can be a perfect time to give a rescue pet a home; especially if time off work means more time to settle a new addition in, or if it will be a quiet festive season. If you are introducing a new pet into your family, there are a few considerations that could help you make the introduction as seamless as possible. First, it might be a good idea to talk to your family to make sure everybody is open to the responsibility of a pet. Outlining responsibilities – who’s going to clean the litter box? Who will feed them morning and night? These questions should be answered before your loved one scoops up a new puppy on Christmas morning.
The teams at our Blue Cross rehoming centres, like the one in Bromsgrove, can give you information about the pet you want to adopt, including where they came from, if they’re good with children, what kind of home they’ll need, and how much exercise they will need. They will also always give the pet a full vet check before they go to their new home. Our doors remain open over the Christmas period, with our dedicated teams caring for homeless and abandoned pets who need our help at our local rehoming centres. Do your homework about what pet you’re going to take on – we recommend coming to a pet charity like Blue Cross as we can advise you on which pet would suit you, your family and your lifestyle.You will also be giving a homeless pet the best Christmas gift of all – a loving new home. riends of St John’s Chairman Jo Slade tells the story of the new external lights on Bromsgrove’s landmark church building. Friends are enormously grateful to our supporters and
In February 2017 Rev Ray Khan asked me if the Friends would like to take on an external lighting project. Always up for a challenge I agreed to look into it, and 20 months later the building now looks as stunning at night as it does in the day. St John’s is a Grade I listed building and sits in the Central Bromsgrove Conservation Area, and as such, and because we were keen to provide a lighting scheme which was in keeping with the style of the building and its heritage, a lot of work went into the preparation and design. I’d asked local firm Woliters to quote as I’d worked with them before and had been impressed with their work. On midsummer’s day of 2017, at 10pm when it was finally dark, we switched on a test light to check the colour and brightness – it needed a little adjustment, but in principle it looked great – here we go I thought! However, the next job was the paperwork, and meetings… And more meetings, and questions and more paperwork. But it is important that we get it right – the church is an important building for Bromsgrove, for Worcestershire and for the Church of England. A large number of people have to be involved when dealing with a building of such importance, and in an area of conservation. In February 2018 a meeting was held with myself, Church Architect Richard Lamb of Hook Mason, our chosen electrical contractors Woliters, Conservation Officer Mary Worsfold, Ruth Bamford Head of Planning and Regeneration, Church Wardens Shan Moule and Alan Batchelor, DAC Electrical Consultant Ian Cramp, DAC Church Buildings Officer Mark Carter, St John’s Vicar Rev Ray Khan – and the good news was that they liked the scheme which Friends and Woliters had decided upon and the paperwork would be signed off at the next meeting. Then, after a period of consultation and subsequent approval from the Chancellor, everything was in place for the work to begin. Working with Lee and Martin Woliter has been a pleasure – they were keen to get things right from the start, work very professionally and are enormously proud of the scheme they have delivered. Having sunny days when using the cherry picker – generously loaned to the project by Bromsgrove based GTAccess Ltd – made for the perfect conditions to correctly position and set up all the lights.

And so, at 6pm on Tuesday 30th October, on a beautiful clear and still night, after a few words of thanks in the church, Bromsgrove’s fabulous Town Crier Kevin Ward led a large group of excited individuals in a count down in the darkness of the ancient churchyard. On “one” his bell rang out in the darkness of the night and the new lights illuminated the building! Cheers and applause erupted in to the night – along with a small mount of relief and a huge helping of joy! The atmosphere was definitely one of pride and delight as the group moved from the churchyard on to the terrace at St John’s Wine Rooms for a celebratory glass of bubbles and to admire the view. It has been a long journey with a number of forms to fill in, decisions to make and hurdles to cross, but without a doubt worth the effort put in by so many to achieve this stunning, legacy lighting. This project was born out of the desire to keep the church at the heart of the community in Bromsgrove. The building is for everyone to appreciate, enjoy and gain benefit from. Friends of St John’s next project “Heritage Future” plans to restore parts of the building which are currently failing and make internal alterations to create a more flexible, accessible, warm, light and welcoming space for many local group and visitors to enjoy. Creative sparks and bright performers wanted - for Bromsgrove’s Festival of Light Parade
T
he team at Artrix Arts Centre are searching for creative sparks and bright performers to join in with Bromsgrove’s Festival of Light procession on Sunday 9th December.
There are many ways to get involved in the run up to the festivities, from lantern making to carnival performances and of course everyone is welcome to come along and watch the parade on the day. A free, spectacular outdoor event bringing together music, community and award winning carnival, this year’s Festival of Light will see a collaboration between Artrix’s Associate Artist Kristoffer Huball and Shademakers, one of Europe’s leading carnival groups. As an inclusive and accessible parade through Bromsgrove’s town’s centre, The Festival of Light aims to engage with local schools, young people and community groups. Families are invited to drop in to make a pyramid lantern in one of Artrix’s Free Lantern Making Workshops - Lantern Making For The Brave on Saturday 1 December at 10am or 1pm, where anyone wanting to create a more complex design can get tips from the professional team to create and make a masterpiece, be it Pokémon, Millennium Falcon or a penguin! All sessions will take place at Parkside, Market Street, Bromsgrove, B61 8DA and are free of charge, but can be pre booked by calling Box Office on 01527 57733. Participants should allow an hour to create a lantern and all children must be accompanied by an adult.
Artrix are also looking for 50 volunteer performers to be part of the festival spirit on the day of the parade. Last year’s Festival of Light saw around 1000 people turn out on to the streets, following a series of lantern making workshops throughout the local schools and out in the community, to welcome a lost 20ft giant boy into the town centre with a pyrotechnic finale and celebration of culture, belonging and warmth. This year’s event is set to be just as special, combining the artistic vision of Kristoffer Huball and Shademakers, whose previous work has seen them lead the very first carnival in post-communist Russia, perform at the Queen’s Golden Jubilee celebrations on The Mall and at the 2012 London Olympics Torch Ceremony. Anyone who would like to get involved as one of 50 community carnival performers will need to be able to commit to a 3hour rehearsal on Saturday 8th December and be available to perform in the carnival procession on Sunday 9th December at 5pm. This season’s programme provides a blend of wind, string and piano ensembles featuring some of the best emerging and established talent from the UK’s concert platforms, of which the Manchester-based Zelkova String Quartet, winners of the prestigious St. Martin’s Chamber Music Competition, are a good example.
Taking their name from the beautiful Zelkova tree, siblings Caroline, Ed and Jonathan Pether together with Alex Mitchell, will be performing at Artrix Arts Centre on Friday 11th January 2019 at 8.00pm. The group has established a reputation as one of the most exciting of the UK’s up-andcoming string quartets, as Hattori Foundation Senior Award winners and Concordia Foundation selected artists, and have been praised for performing ‘with a remarkable zeal and intensity’. Currently the inaugural ensemble to participate in the Royal Northern College of Music String Quartet Studio, the quartet recently recorded their debut CD on Stone Records featuring the music of contemporary composer, Nicholas Simpson. For their programme at Bromsgrove Concerts, they have chosen to perform works by Haydn, Bartok, Beethoven and Judith Weir; the current Master of The Queen’s Music. Historic violin “The Robin” sings again A
n historic violin made by Joseph Swain of Oldbury in 1923, is now on show at Jinney Ring Craft Centre in Hanbury after many months of extensive restoration. The violin, known as “The Robin” because of its distinctive reddish front, arrived at Bill Piper’s studio at Jinney Ring in a neglected state and in several pieces. After months of painstaking work by Bill and his colleague Chris Everall, The Robin has now been fully restored and has been played by German violin virtuoso, Ulrich Guenther, of the Worcester Symphony Orchestra. Chris says: “It was a challenge and a labour of love, but wonderful to think that this fine old violin, ‘The Robin’, can sing again nearly a century after it was made.” The Robin is on display in Bill Piper’s violin studio at Jinney Ring until the end of November as part of the First World War Centenary “Poppy Trail”.
