Everything starts from a beginning point A journey of a thousand miles begins with one-step, as a love story, a friendship or an artistic research. Initially it is a matter of curiosity, pleasure, challenge, then it becomes a necessity that you cannot choke. Rousseau Le Douanier, the French painter, had been experimenting it, as he discovered the painting when he was forty years old, and the critics blamed him by accusing his obvious stylistic inconsistencies typical of an autodidact and his lack of academic studies. The list of artists who have not followed “regular” paths is long and includes celebrities such as Van Gogh or Antonio Ligabue. Artists who, in many cases, have made the most diverse activities before discovering the painting and that, then, they learned self-taught, looking at the works of the others, knowing artists, dealing with criticism. Even Michela Rompato has undertaken this courageous way.

About me ‌ Michela Rompato, a predominantly self-taught painter of Vicenza, approached the world of painting by following the courses of the Master of Arts Vincenzo Ursoleo; under his direction, she immediately recognized her inclination towards abstract painting. Michela Rompato is an artist who shuns outright the figurative language and whose pictorial research is aimed to overcoming it, also through the deliberative practice of a material painting where the favorite acrylic colors blend first with dust and enamels, to be then incorporated in gauzes, ropes, tesseras of pearls and all what the material can be susceptible to be conceptually transposed; in parallel she has been evolving a continuous research in the use of the pure color. The paintings of Rompato give off an emotionally tension release; in particular the latest works propose real and deep reflections on the existence of every individual: from the surface of the canvas, the artist arrived to deal with three-dimensional and sculptural works, enhanced also by the means of supports and installations designed and built ad hoc. Michela Rompato lives and works always in Vicenza; some of her artworks are part of private collections.

Le Tessere:

riflessioni sull’individuo

The Tesseras:

reflections on the individual

I transfer in my “tesseras” in enameled stucco and colored one by one work, my thoughts about the existence of each individual – represented precisely by the “tessera” – and on the thread keeping tighten one person to another one, from what appears at first impact, until the fullest immersion in the underground of the human soul. The creative process on the “tesseras” leads me quite “forcibly” to go over the two dimensions of the canvas, to arrive at tridimensional and “solid” works, where I also used supports and installations designed and built ad hoc. In my works on the ex-voto or the vow we made I reflect on and express some themes that deeply accompany us throughout the entire life: engagement, thanking, renunciation. The pearls acquire both the meaning of the mystical value that a person assumes towards a divine entity, in order to make it grant his or her request, and of the ability to be free from the constraints for being himself or herself in a pure and simple way.

The Tesseras and installations: over the two dimensions In my recent works, the expression from the underground is no longer contained within the canvas but it expands in solid forms invading the space: three-dimensional works and installations. In “The Life Circle “, the three phases of the existence of an individual emerge from the surface of the painting in a geometric paradox exemplified by the volumes of the pyramidal triangle. The installations are displayed with regular polyhedra, coated in whole or in part by the “tesseras”, supported and surrounded by metal structures that perfectly integrate into the existential context of the work because they are born with it and they are shaped on it. The fiberglass structures, the three-dimensional work and the installations always start from a need of conceptual transfer inherent to the reflections on people. In my continuous evolving, the abstract concept is transferred into a spatiality whose meaning I entrust to the freedom and individual interpretation.

In this representation of the individual, the “tesseras” symbolize a gesture that occurred; I go back to the theme of the ex-voto or of the wow we made: the choice is firm, accomplished. The individual is detached from the earth, raised by the embrace that keeps the power of the choice he/she made, wraps and protects him/her. E’ l’anima esposta, senza protezioni. This is the soul I exposed with no protection. The colors I used express the dark side and the will of emergence glimpses from the textures. The pearls have a stylized form referring deliberately to the hourglass.

By this work my meditation focuses on the theme of conditioning. The cage is the state of being prisoners of ourselves. The inability to get free forces to remain suspended and eternally locked up in our conditioning. The freedom can be reached if you free the light, here represented by the colors that radiate outward from ourselves and that we must prepare ourselves to perceive and to decode. LA GABBIA

Elettra

Out of the painting:

here is Elettra

With Elettra I bring back the “tesseras” from the abstract and evocative dimension to the personification. My will is to express, even plastically, the deep forces that stress us along the life.

ELETTRA Struttura in vetroresina, lavorata con garze, stucco, smalto, acrilico, corda H 123 cm ELETTRA Fiberglass structure, worked with gauze, stucco, enamel, acrylic, rope H 123 cm

. La scelta è sua.

Elettra is an emerging identity who is also a harbinger of hidden truths and doubts. What we show is really what we are? How much and how far does the dark side of ourselves unconsciously condition us? The “tesseras” that tattoo the body are the representation of the person, the demonstration to the external world of ourselves: they are irregular, thick, sometimes lighter, colored or dull, inaccurate or brilliant. The texture links them as a thin thread representing the difficult winding roads, but it also binds and strengthen them. The position of Electra could lead to think of a consciousness, but “her” hands are tied: the rope symbolizes the constraints dictated by the milieu we grow, by the education, by the life we live, by the fears, by the instincts and the inclinations … . Electra is on “her” knees, but “she” maybe can get up, get untied ... . “She” has to make the choice.

The Oaks The oak symbolizes the strength, being by nature a big and solid tree. Its roots go very deeply, quite to reach the center of the earth; its branches rise up to the sky as if to cross it. In one direction or in the other, the strength goes over the obstacles and no one could prevent it.

Dicono di me ... In

What they say about me … In her first exhibition “sotterranea” it has been chosen to organize the works of the painter according to thematic and chronological “islands”. We note that the road that leads to abstraction passes through the dialogue with a tree. A tree that appears dematerialized, transfigured on gold and silver funds: it is the point of reunion between the earth, where its roots, and the sky, where the branches extend. From here, the research for horizontal and vertical lines begins according to a harmonious rhythm. Michela uses the sponging technique to create a space that goes beyond the limits of the canvas, continues on the edges, explodes the limits and enhances the fullness of the Oak that goes out into two opposite directions, downwards, that is towards the depth of the roots and always higher up in the majesty of the fronds. Slowly, the tree takes the form of a grid, made through the intersection of horizontal and vertical sections created by means of the spatulas. Works like “Inside and Outside” are born in such a way: they are canvas on the border between figurative and abstract, bathed in light from which brushes stand out, arranged in a chaotic order, a sort of agreement between the pleasure of the

reason and the taste of the imagination. Throughout this instrumental movement, you may appreciate the effort toward the changing: the successive color additions and subtractions, operated by the artist, arise unpredictably and leave resurface the deep layers of the material and the time held by them. This methodology brings us closer to the experiments of the great Gerhard Richter. It is a matter, also in this specific case, of interventions that aim to enhance the potential of the gesture and to make accessible, in the torn and underground form of the color, what escapes, is submerged and without memory. By this series of works for Michela Rompato a continuous tension begins towards the art fusion with the inner self. The admired and contemplated nature lights in her a state of emergency to get to the core of things to find, as Cézanne and Mondrian taught, the invisible structure, the rhythm, the form, the basis of the beauty. The exhibition proceeds among lights and colors: gold lights, enriches, becomes chromatic material of large and small surfaces. We finally arrive at the “painting of the tesseras”, potentially transferable to infinity, where we can discover that every piece holds a unique and independent world, connected to the closest space with a golden frame. It is therefore created a compelling path of parallelisms between a tangible “visible” level and an “underground” level, that Rompato wants to shape. In the metaphor

of the “tessera” - a metaphor that recalls the splendor of the Byzantine mosaics, the part for the whole - the strength and the communicative value of the lines and the colors are maximized. In the Ex voto for the first time the pearls appear to emphasize the need to innate sacredness that humans can reflect, but in reverse. As well as the cross, that appears in the main structure of the entire work, which is the grid where all matter clings. In this monochrome of golden pearls, an evident sense of balance and of uniqueness appears: if you carefully read the “tesseras”, you will notice that they are not all equal and smooth. Otherwise, they have the same reference form. Intuitively we can perceive these square and rectangular shapes as symbols, signs of definition and of delimitation. The square is the geometric shape with four sides, which represents the squaring of the material, the regularization to what, by its nature, would be left unformed and chaotic. If the circle is perfect, the square is right - in fact, if something is logical, thus we use to say that it “squares”; to square means to define, to examine, to analyze something in detail - . The square is the symbol of the earth, but it is also, at another level, the symbol of the created universe, the union between heaven and earth, because it is the perfection of the sphere on the Earth plane. This need to score the canvas with straight lines and to characterize it by means of the “tesseras”

is also found in The three Stages; in this case each peace can be related to a presence, with a different color and surface, disposed on three levels to remember the existence path, that, starting from an ordered structure, proceeds according motions aimed to regain a harmonic square. A movement that finally takes shape in the installations - like The lectern, The embrace, The cage and Electra - and shares with the viewer the same space in a symmetric dialogue. If we look closely at the painting of Michela Rompato, we can see infinite worlds created by subtle variations in thickness, stucco finished with a spatula, gauze, pearls different for lighting power, pure colors applied with a careful variety of crossstrokes. The whole starts from a nature that is the expression of opposing forces kept in balance. An artistic research that will surprise us in the future with interesting experiments because she builds it in a constant confrontation with a society full of cultural contaminations, today more and more multi-ethnic, she is attentive to a reality that includes all the pieces of the diversity. A mosaic of knowledge and underground lives. Francesca Rizzo
