Parfaite illustration du concept de fusion cher à Hublot, le design iconique de la Big Bang, maintes fois primé et aujourd’hui icône de l’horlogerie, célèbre cette année son 10e anniversaire. L’histoire commence avec la Big Bang Or Céramique. A l’origine de l’idée et de la création du nom : Jean-Claude Biver, aujourd’hui président de Hublot et président de la division montres de LVMH et persuadé que « Rien ne peut naître en l’absence d’une bonne idée ». Le terme Big Bang se fonde sur une idée essentielle à l’art de la fusion : l’association d’objets et de matériaux qui n’apparaissent jamais ensemble dans les conditions normales de l’existence, à l’exemple du caoutchouc et de l’or, de la céramique et de l’acier ou encore de la toile de jeans et des diamants. — Big Bang has come a long way since 2005, achieving phenomenal success that has made it the brand’s flagship collection. Le tout dans une puissante boîte de 45 mm de diamètre, racée et mécanique qui abrite le mouvement Unico maison. Avec le Magic Gold, Hublot est au paroxysme de l’Art de la fusion. Après trois ans de recherche et de développement en collaboration avec l’EPFL, Hublot a développé un nouvel alliage d’or ultra résistant et qui ne s’oxyde plus. Véritable « fusion » entre l’or 24 carats et la céramique (poudre de bore), ce nouveau métal, quasiment inaltérable, devient le premier or au monde à être inrayable — seul le diamant, le laser et l’électro-érosion peuvent l’altérer — ce qui élimine le point faible traditionnel de l’or et de ses alliages. L’élaboration du Magic Gold suit un processus complexe qui a nécessité l’installation d’une fonderie high-tech au sein de la manufacture de Nyon. Representing a true “fusion” between 24K gold and ceramic (boron carbide powder), this new almost inalterable metal is the world’s first gold to be truly scratch-resistant — meaning that only diamond, laser or spark erosion technologies can machine it and thereby eliminating the traditional Achilles’ heel of gold and its alloys. The production of Magic Gold involves a complex process that called for the installation of a high-tech foundry in the Nyon-based Manufacture. 18K Magic Gold, like all other 18K alloys, consists of 750 thousandths pure gold and therefore bears the AU 750 hallmark. 26

Flash back : depuis 1972, André Messika s’est imposé comme étant l’un des acteurs en vue du négoce du diamant. Infatigable passionné parcourant la planète à la recherche des plus belles pierres, il a su transmettre cet amour à sa fille Valérie. Un amour qu’elle a choisi de mettre au service de sa créativité en lançant en 2005 la marque Messika. Evidemment, grandir parmi les diamants est un destin peu commun. Flashback : since 1972, André Messika has been widely considered one of the strongest actors in the diamond business. Thanks to his tireless passion, travelling the world seeking the most beautiful stones, he succeeded in passing on this love to his daughter Valérie — a love that inspired her creativity when launching the brand Messika in 2005. Clearly, growing up among diamonds is an unusual destiny. So much so that Valérie, completely uninhibited regarding these precious stones, decided that a diamond is not intended to spend its life in a box while waiting for special occasions. JSBG — Qu’est-ce qui vous a poussé à quitter vos études de communication pour créer Messika ? Valérie Messika — J’étais passionnée par la communication, métier que j’étudiais. Et là, en 2002, mon père a choisi de partir à Tel Aviv, une importante bourse du diamant. J’étais alors la seule parmi ses six enfants en âge de travailler et il m’a demandé de l’épauler dans ses affaires : « laisse-moi six mois pour te convaincre, et ensuite tu feras ce que tu veux. » Nous avons parcouru le monde. L’Inde, l’Afrique… J’ai découvert son univers. Je l’ai trouvé fascinant. À mon retour, j’ai poursuivi un temps mes activités, puis je

Mais à deux conditions : Ne fais que du diamant, parce que c’est ton origine, c’est là qu’est ton expertise. Et ne copie personne ! Suis ton propre chemin. » En 2005, je lançais Messika. Pourquoi avoir choisi ce positionnement spécifique à Messika, les diamants à porter tous les jours ? C’est ce dont j’avais envie pour moi-même. Lorsque j’étais petite, mon père me faisait jouer à reconnaître les différentes pierres. Ensuite il était curieux de savoir lesquelles je préférais et pourquoi. Il y avait là à la fois quelque chose de très ludique et d’émotionnel. Grâce à ces jeux, j’ai désacralisé le diamant dans mon esprit. J’en avais marre d’entendre le slogan « le diamant est éternel », mes copines dire que pour elles ce ne serait que pour leur bague de fiançailles ou de mariage, ça m’ennuyait. Je m’imaginais pouvoir porter du diamant au quotidien, l’acheter seule, comme un sac ou une paire de chaussures. Quelle était l’idée derrière la volonté de rendre flexibles vos métaux, votre fameuse méthode skinny ?

When I was a little girl, my father used to make me play a game where I had to identify different stones. Then he was curious about which ones I preferred and why. These moments were very playful and emotional. These games helped me desacralise my view of diamonds. I was tired of the slogan ”diamonds are forever” and of hearing my girlfriends saying that diamonds would only be for their engagement or wedding ring really bothered me. I pictured myself wearing diamonds every day, buying them by myself, like a bag or a pair of shoes. What was the idea behind your desire to make metals more flexible, your famous skinny method? Two things: The quest for extreme comfort combining adaptability and elasticity; as well as the desire to wear diamonds directly on the skin. I thought that a small river of diamonds coiling around the wrist could be very sexy. We worked with gold in such a way as to endow it with a kind of memory so that the object always returns to its original shape. The idea is to make the metal disappear as much as possible in order to focus on the Brightness of the diamond. What type of women do you think of in creating your jewellery?

Deux choses : la recherche d’un confort extrême combinant adaptabilité et élasticité. Et aussi l’envie de porter le diamant à fleur de peau. Je trouvais sexy d’imaginer une petite rivière de diamants qui épouse le poignet, qui l’accompagne, qui se contorsionne. Nous avons travaillé l’or jusqu’à réussir à lui donner une sorte de mémoire de manière à ce que l’objet reprenne toujours sa forme initiale. Faire disparaître autant que faire se peut le métal pour ne laisser place qu’à la brillance du diamant. À quel type de femmes pensez-vous en créant vos bijoux ? J’ai été bercée par les grands classiques du cinéma, avec des vedettes telles qu’Audrey Hepburn. Du côté de la mode, j’ai toujours eu un faible pour Kate Moss et les fameuses top-models des années 90. Leur féminité m’a inspiré, tout comme la mode qu’elles portaient. Par exemple pour la collection Silk, qui s’apparente à une étoffe de diamants. Des cols, des manchettes, un peu comme on en ferait en couture, comme découpés au ciseau. Et l’art également. Des artistes tels qu’Alexander Calder, pour la légèreté et la fluidité de ses œuvres. Au final, toutes les femmes m’inspirent. Ma mère, simplement, ou une femme croisée dans la rue…

I was brought up on the great classic films with stars like Audrey Hepburn. In terms of fashion, I’ve always had a soft spot for Kate Moss and the famous super models of the 1990s. Their femininity inspired me, as did the fashions they wore. For example, the Silk collection looks like a diamond fabric. There are collars and cuffs, as if cut with scissors in true couture style. I also admire artists such as Alexander Calder, for the lightness and fluidity of his artwork. Basically, all women inspire me. My mother, quite simply, or a woman in the street…

What developments are planned for Messika? Our guiding thread is diamond expertise. This gives us credibility in jewellery but also in fine jewellery, upon which we embarked two years ago with the opening of our shop on Rue Saint-Honoré. To celebrate our tenyear anniversary, we decided to work on ten exceptional large stones. After Paris, Megève and Kazakhstan, we will also open three new points of sale in Saudi Arabia, Doha and Kuwait. One important thing to mention is that have a lot of affection for Switzerland. We regard it as an absolute benchmark in market management as exemplified in the watchmaking business. Besides, we have the opportunity to be distributed in Switzerland by multi-brand jewellers also offering watches. 87

Quels sont les développements prévus pour Messika ? Notre fil rouge est l’expertise diamantaire. Cela nous donne la crédibilité dans la joaillerie mais aussi dans la haute joaillerie, dans laquelle nous nous sommes lancés il y a deux ans à l’occasion de l’ouverture de notre boutique de la Rue St-Honoré. Pour nos dix ans, nous avons décidé de travailler dix grandes pierres d’exception. Après Paris et Megève et le Kazakhstan, nous allons aussi ouvrir trois nouveaux points de vente en propre en Arabie Saoudite, à Doha et au Koweït. Une chose importante : nous avons beaucoup d’affection pour la Suisse. Pour nous, c’est une référence absolue en termes de gestion du marché, en comparant avec l’horlogerie. Nous avons d’ailleurs la chance d’y être distribués dans des bijouteries multi-marques proposant également des montres. Une grande partie de vos proches et de votre famille travaille avec vous. Comment faites-vous pour déconnecter ? J’avoue que nous sommes tous passionnés pas ce que nous faisons. Nous sommes dans l’excitation, l’émulation, le besoin de réaliser, d’entreprendre. Ramener le business à la maison, ça nous arrive ! Maintenant que nous avons des enfants, nous sommes un peu obligés de séparer les choses. Mais le cerveau, lui, est toujours en ébullition, en recherche. La création est un peu une gymnastique de l’œil, tout peut être source d’inspiration. On enregistre des choses, qui se marient à d’autres choses, qui mènent à une troisième. C’est un peu enivrant, ça ne s’arrête jamais…

Many of your loved ones and your family work with you. How do you disconnect? I admit that we are all passionate about what we do. Our work is infused with excitement, healthy emulation and a need to achieve, to undertake. We admittedly sometimes bring business home with us! Now that we have kids, we have to separate things, but the mind is always in overdrive, looking for new solutions. Design is like gymnastics for the eye, everything can be inspiring. We note things that blend with other things and lead to still more options, in a heady, never-ending cycle.
