Tai Shani: Tragodía

Tai Shani’s multidisciplinary practice, comprising performance, film, photography and installation, revolves around experimental narrative texts. Shani creates violent, erotic and fantastical images told in a dense, floral language which re-imagines female otherness as a perfect totality, set in a world complete with cosmologies, myth and histories that negate patriarchy. These alternate between familiar narrative tropes and structures and theoretical prose in order to explore the construction of subjectivity, excess and affects of the epic as the ground for a post-patriarchal realism.

Tai Shani’s project DC Productions (2014–2018) that proposes an allegorical city of women, is an experimental and expanded adaptation of Christine de Pizan’s 1405 pioneering feminist book, The Book of the City of Ladies within which Christine builds an allegorical city for notable women drawn from a medieval conception of history, where fact, fiction and myth are blurred. This non-hierarchical approach also determines the construction of the characters and narrative of the Dark Continent.

Tai Shani was born in London. Tai Shani: Tragodía

Just from the mere topics of many Tai Shani‘s works we can see how this artist fancies tragedy. Her current exhibition project called Tragodía (Greek expression for a theatrical piece with a serious content; literally song of the goats) is an explicit manifestation of this inclination of hers, yet it would be a mistake to reduce it just to this interpretational level. Tai Shani’s work is first of all full of contradictions or paradoxes: thematically we encounter motives such as death, violence or suicide, but in the same measure the topic of explicit sexuality and romance. The artist herself indulges in psychoanalysis, and so the dialectics of her works can be expressed as permeation of the productive instinct of life, Eros, and the destructive instinct of death, Thanatos.

Shani works amid a broad spectrum of media, her main means of expression being performance, text, film, and object installations. This all together often forms an immersive, theatrical environment, attacking viewer’s senses and imagination. Her aesthetics connects sensuality, dreaminess and organicity of surrealism, postmodernist (architectural) pastiche and psychedelicity of club culture. Typical of Tai Shani is her relationship to the alternative music scene, and her subcultural references – typically documented by, among other things, her original visuals / posters, which accompany each and every of her projects. The resources the artist explores include antic tradition and mythology, literary and film classics, medieval stories, religions, sci-fi and popular culture. However, as Shani herself admits, a considerable part of her subject matters and partial motifs of her artworks are based on her own experience – not necessarily explicitly autobiographic.

Shani was born in the United Kingdom, but she grew up in an alternative left-oriented community in Israel. Her parents were members of a countercultural group The 3rd Eye lead by artist Jacques Katmor. The group declared revolutionary ideals and shared enthusiasm for altered states of consciousness under the influence of drugs, for loose sexual relationships and creative experiments. Tai Shani’s artistic career was thus practically given and as she herself says, she never had the need to tackle the issues of whether such way of life “makes sense”. The unorthodox (and in the given context of place and time even radical) environment that formed the artist in her childhood can thus offer one of possible keys to interpret her art. Undoubtedly the already mentioned psychoanalysis might be of use here as well. As Shani herself declares, artistic creation cannot be looked at just as a certain kind of therapy, yet it partially has this dimension too.

In case of Tragodía, the prism of artist’s personal story readily lends itself as a clue to the artwork’s interpretation. Along with the central tragic-existential theme of death and loss, Tragodía arouses questions connected with the form of a (traditional) family, the role of women (wife and mother), relationships between women, mental balance or normality, psychoactive drugs use or individual freedom in general. Undoubtedly all these topics concern the artist in a very personal way.

The three women apparently represent her closest relations, mother and aunt, complemented by grandmother on mother’s side. Shani who is the last in this bloodline and one day her family will “die out in her on the distaff side”,1 escalates tension ensuing from such awareness when choosing for her plot the death of a daughter and mourning of the bereaved that will end up with them all committing a voluntary suicide.

As if the artist reversed the roles – accelerating time and letting her older relatives experience this situation of a family coming to an end. As daughter she is thus releasing herself from the painful prospect of the day when she would be the only one left. At the same time we can suspect certain degree of self-identification in all characters presented. Thus the forthcoming inevitable drama is experienced in fictitious framework from more points of view. The time dimension is intriguing concerning the motif of child’s death: when a parent must burry his or her child, it is a kind of “fatal mistake” in time sequence – the parent finds herself further in the future than where

she should be – as if she leaped over her own death. This aspect of Tragodía can be also perceived in connection with the author’s long-term interest in time overlapping, simultaneity, time travel or existence of more parallel universes. As mother and aunt reflect in their lament: „Open a million almost infinite worlds where you would have survived. […] Or terrible worlds, where you died many times in awful circumstances before this, or you were a stillborn. Or the worst of worlds where you were never born at all.“ What would happen if I were not born at all? A play of potentialities is present in Tai Shani’s work as one of its structural principles, thus imparting to it an existential and speculative dimension.

The spatial installation itself has a strikingly theatrical character of a spotlit “stage” full of fascinating “props” but without any sign of movement or life – the expected actors are gone… This unpopulated emptiness (though loaded with symbols at the same time) underpins the fatalistic meaning of the artwork. We then follow the virtual plot of the drama, which by contrast offers extreme details of the characters. We are confronted with the heroines’ expressive faces, which at the same time embody the taboo categories of old age and ugliness. Female (anti-)heroines and their relationships are after all yet another constant in the works of Tai Shani, who quite unequivocally declares roots of her art being feminist, at the same time however is skeptical concerning the possibilities of contemporary art to be an agent of radical social changes.2 In the first place she wishes to evoke an intense emotional experience, which would last in the viewer.3 The topic of death has of course a panhuman transferability, however the artist cares about just certain facets of this universal theme. Morbidity, which is not alien to Tai Shani, is rather marginal in Tragodía; the work’s main focus is directed towards psychological dimension of what death brings to the bereaved – separation, sorrow, memories, emptiness – reality, consequently unacceptable by many, as the aunt puts it: “I can’t understand a reality of never being reunited.” Through the presence of the spirit of the deceased, the play also touches upon the transcendental dimension of death and, as the dead daughter mentions: “Non-believers have to accept that the price for secular respite is that of eternal separation.”

In its message, Tragodía is moving, even heartbreaking, and yet not quite dark – leaving space especially for freedom (be it radical, i.e. freedom to finish one’s life), and referring to the bond of love, which endows our freedom with meaning.

Multidisciplinární praxe umělkyně Tai Shani, která pracuje s médii performance, filmu, fotografie a instalace, se točí kolem experimentálních narativních textů. Shani v nich vytváří intenzivní, erotické a fantastické obrazy, jež vypravuje hutným, květnatým jazykem a imaginativně tak reinterpretuje ženskou „jinakost“ jako dokonalý celek zasazený do světa kosmologií, mýtů a historií popírajících patriarchát. Osciluje mezi známými narativními tropy a strukturami a teoretickou prózou a prozkoumává konstrukci subjektivity, excesu a afektů epického díla, jež tvoří základ post-patriarchálního realismu.

Její projekt Dark Continent Productions (2014–2018) pojednávající o alegorickém městě žen je experimentální rozšířenou adaptací průkopnické feministické knihy Kristiny Pisánské z roku 1405 nazvané Kniha o městě dam. Pisánská v ní vykresluje alegorické město pro významné ženy a v rámci středověkého pojetí historie ponechává prostupnou hranici mezi fakty, fikcí a mýty. Podobně nehierarchický přístup zvolila i Tai Shani při konstrukci postav a narativu Temného kontinentu.

Tai Shani se narodila v Londýně. Hojně vystavuje ve Velké Británii i na mezinárodní scéně. Tai Shani: Tragodía

Z námětů mnoha děl Tai Shani je patrné, že má tato umělkyně zálibu v tragédii. Její aktuální výstavní projekt Tragodía (řecký výraz pro divadelní formu s vážným obsahem; doslova zpěv kozlů) je výslovným ztělesněním této záliby, byla by však chyba jej redukovat jen na tuto interpretační rovinu. Tvorba Tai Shani je především plná protikladů či paradoxů: na tematické rovině se u ní setkáme stejnou měrou s motivy, jako je smrt, násilí či sebevražda, jako s tématem explicitní sexuality a milostných vztahů. Umělkyně sama se zajímá o psychoanalýzu, a tak snad můžeme vyjádřit dialektiku jejích děl jako prolínání produktivního pudu života, Érotu, a destruktivního pudu smrti, Thanatu.

Shani tvoří v širokém spektru médií, jejími hlavními vyjadřovacími prostředky jsou performance, text, film a objektové instalace. To vše často tvoří imerzní, teatrální prostředí, které útočí na divákovy smysly a imaginaci. Její estetika v sobě spojuje smyslnost, snovost a organičnost surrealismu, postmodernistický (architektonický) pastiš a psychedeličnost klubové kultury. Vazba na alternativní hudební scénu a subkulturní reference jsou pro Tai Shani typické – příznačně to dokládají mj. originální vizuály/plakáty, které doprovázejí každý jednotlivý projekt umělkyně. Zdroje, k nimž se umělkyně obrací, zahrnují antickou tradici a mytologii, klasická díla literatury a filmu, středověké příběhy, náboženské nauky i sci-fi a popkulturu. Jak ale Shani sama přiznává, nezanedbatelná část námětů i dílčích motivů jejích děl vychází z vlastních zážitků a zkušeností – aniž by byla nutně vysloveně autobiografická.

Shani se sice narodila ve Velké Británii, vyrůstala ale v alternativní levicově orientované komunitě v Izraeli. Její rodiče byli členy kontra-kulturní skupiny The 3rd Eye vedené umělcem Jacquesem Katmorem. Skupina vyznávala revoluční ideály a sdílela nadšení pro stavy změněného vědomí pod vlivem drog, uvolněné sexuální vztahy a tvůrčí experiment. Umělecká dráha tak byla pro Tai Shani jaksi předurčena a jak sama říká, neměla nikdy potřebu řešit otázky, zda taková životní cesta „dává smysl“.

Neortodoxní (a v daném kontextu místa a času až radikální) prostředí, které umělkyni v dětství formovalo, tak může být jedním z možných klíčů k interpretaci její tvorby a svoje uplatnění by tu nepochybně našla i již zmiňovaná psychoanalýza. Jak prohlásila sama Shani, uměleckou tvorbu není možné nahlížet pouze jako určitý druh terapie, tento rozměr ale přesto částečně také má.

V případě díla Tragodía je pak jeho čtení prismatem osobního příběhu umělkyně skutečně nasnadě. Vedle ústředního tragicko-existenciálního motivu smrti a ztráty rezonují v tomto díle otázky spojené s podobou (tradiční) rodiny, úlohou ženy (jako manželky a matky), vztahy mezi ženami, psychickou rovnováhou či normalitou, užíváním psychoaktivních drog nebo obecně svobodou jednotlivce. Všechna tato témata se samotné umělkyně dotýkají nepochybně velmi osobně.

Trojice žen zde konkrétně představuje dvě nejbližší žijící příbuzné umělkyně, matku a tetu, doplněné o babičku z matčiny strany. Shani, která je v této pokrevní linii poslední a jednoho dne s ní tak rod „vymře po přeslici“,1 eskaluje napětí, které z tohoto vědomí plyne, když jako zápletku svého díla volí smrt dcery a truchlení pozůstalých, jež vyústí v dobrovolnou společnou sebevraždu.

Můžeme říct, že umělkyně jako by převrací role – urychluje čas a nechává onu situaci konce rodu prožít své starší příbuzné. Jako dcera se tím vyvazuje z bolestné vyhlídky na den, kdy už z rodiny zbyde jediná. Zároveň ale můžeme ve všech představených postavách tušit určitou míru sebeidentifikace. Nadcházející nevyhnutelné trauma je tak ve fiktivním rámci prožíváno z více různých pozic. Na motivu smrti dítěte je však zajímavý také rozměr času: když rodič musí pochovat své dítě, je to jako jakási fatální chyba v časové souslednosti – rodič se ocitá dál v budoucnosti, než kam by měl zajít – jako by přeskočil svou vlastní smrt. Tento aspekt díla Tragodía můžeme vnímat také v souvislosti s dlouhodobým zájmem autorky o překrývání různých časových rovin, o simultaneitu, cestování v čase nebo existenci dalších paralelních univerz. Jak

ve svém žalozpěvu přemítají matka s tetou: „Otevřete milion téměř nekonečných světů, kde bys přežila. […] Nebo děsivých světů před tímto, kde jsi mnohokrát zemřela za hrůzných okolností nebo ses narodila mrtvá. Nebo ty nejhorší ze všech světů, kde ses nikdy nenarodila.“ Co by bylo, kdybych se vůbec nenarodila? Hra potencialit je v tvorbě Tai Shani přítomná jako jeden ze strukturních principů a vnáší tak do ní existenciální a spekulativní rozměr.

Samotná prostorová instalace má výrazně divadelní charakter nasvíceného „jeviště“ pokrytého množstvím fascinujících „rekvizit“, ale bez jakékoli známky pohybu či života – očekávaní „herci“ jsou pryč… Tato neobydlená prázdnota (byť současně obtěžkaná množstvím symbolů) podtrhuje fatalistické vyznění díla. Ve virtuální realitě pak sledujeme děj dramatu, který nám naopak předkládá extrémní detaily postav. Jsme konfrontováni s expresivními tvářemi hrdinek, které současně ztělesňují tabuizované kategorie stáří a škaredosti. Ženské (anti)hrdinky a jejich vztahy jsou koneckonců další konstantou tvorby Tai Shani, která jednoznačně označuje kořeny své práce jako feministické, je však zároveň skeptická k možnostem současného umění jakožto činitele radikálních společenských změn.2 Jde jí v první řadě o vyvolání intenzivního emocionálního zážitku, který by v divákovi přetrval.3 Téma smrti má samozřejmě takovou všelidskou přenositelnost, umělkyni jde ale především o určité fazety tohoto univerzálního tématu. Morbidnost, jež Tai Shani není cizí, je v Tragodíi spíš okrajová, hlavní zájem se tu soustředí na psychologický rozměr toho, co smrt přináší pozůstalým – odloučení, žal, vzpomínání, prázdnotu – skutečnost, která je pro mnohé v důsledku neakceptovatelná, jak to ve hře vyjadřuje teta: „Je pro mě nepředstavitelné, že bychom se už nikdy nesetkaly“. Skrze přítomnost ducha zemřelé se pak obsah dotýká i transcendentního rozměru smrti, a jak říká mrtvá dcera: „Nevěřící musí přijmout, že cenou za krátké spočinutí na tomto světě je věčné odloučení.“ Tragodía je ve svém vyznění tklivá, až srdceryvná, přesto není úplně temná – ponechává především prostor pro svobodu (byť krajní, tedy svobodu k ukončení vlastního života) a zároveň odkazuje na pouto lásky, které naší svobodě dává smysl.

Z tátovy strany je to složitější. Maminka s tetou jsou všechno, co mi zbylo, a myslím, že někdy cítím velkou úzkost až hrůzu z představy, že už nebudou na světě. Vzpomínám si, když umřel tatínek, dívala jsem se na strom a jeho chvějící se listy a měla jsem pocit tátovy přítomnosti, jako v animismu, kde se esence člověka rozplyne do éteru. Je to podivná věc. Máte chvilky, kdy se smějete, po čemž rychle následují okamžiky absolutní devastace. Je to směsice uctívání a vzpomínání na danou osobu. Je to jako nemožnost uvidět oharek cigarety, o které víte, že jste ji před 24 hodinami kouřili. Je fascinující, jak předměty nadále přetrvávají ve světě a zůstávají ve vlastnictví osoby, která právě zesnula. Ve filmu se chci zabývat těmito pocity ztráty.“ – Tamtéž.
