Cena Jindřicha Chalupeckého Cena Jindřicha Chalupeckého, nesoucí jméno předního českého teoretika a kritika výtvarného umění a literatury, esejisty a filozofa, byla založena v roce 1990 z iniciativy Václava Havla, Jiřího Koláře a Theodora Pištěka.

Selection of Finalists of Jindřich Chalupecký Award The winner of Jindřich Chalupecký Award is selected by an independent jury of visual arts experts appointed by the Jindřich Chalupecký Society Board. The jury includes seven members, both Czech citizens and foreign experts, usually in a ratio of 3:4. The jury membership term is restricted to three years. Jindřich Chalupecký Society has no right to influence the decisions of the jury. The choice of finalists and the award winner is the outcome of a consensus among the jury members, based upon an intense discussion and thorough selection process. Each year, the jury selects five finalists that are intensively supported by Jindřich Chalupecký Society throughout the year, primarily concerning their new work created for a common exhibition held in the fall at one of the partner institutions: the National Gallery in Prague or the Moravian Gallery in Brno. During the exhibition, the jury selects the winner of Jindřich Chalupecký Award for the respective year. The winner’s name is announced and the award is presented as part of the award ceremony.

Jindřich Chalupecký Award The Jindřich Chalupecký Award, named after the leading Czech art and literary critic, essayist and philosopher, was established in 1990 by playwright, writer and former Czech president Václav Havel, artist Theodor Pištěk, and poet and artist Jiří Kolář. The award commemorates the lifetime achievement of Jindřich Chalupecký (1910–1990) who initiated unofficial, avant-garde art activities in former Czechoslovakia. At the same time, he worked to preserve Czech art’s independence and its affinity with the tradition of both Czech and European modern art. Jindřich Chalupecký Award is presented to visual artists under the age of 35 living or active in the Czech Republic. The award is conferred for an extraordinary artistic achievement in visual arts. It is designed for the emerging generation of artists whose work has the potential to gain recognition both on the Czech and international art scene and which embodies an exceptional attitude both in its content and form. The award is granted to artists working in any media, with respect for interdisciplinary approaches and other current tendencies in contemporary art. Jindřich Chalupecký Society The award is organized by Jindřich Chalupecký Society which operates as a platform for contemporary Czech art. In collaboration with various partner institutions and individuals both in the Czech Republic and internationally, we organize exhibitions, public programs and residencies, educational and publication projects. Our primary goals are to support experimental and innovative artistic and theoretical production, foster the recognition of contemporary Czech art in local and international contexts and embody a socially aware, open and inclusive attitude, contributing both to the professional discourse and a broad public impact of our projects.
Finále 2017
SVĚT,
V NĚMŽ ŽIJEME? Tereza Jindrová

I ostatní finalisté volí podobné strategie: film Martina Kohouta sledujeme napůl v sedu, napůl v lehu; Dominik Gajarský využil před projekcí pohodlná zahradní lehátka; posadit se můžeme i v instalaci Romany Drdové a Richarda Loskota.
24
Finále 2017 a významové rovině samotných děl.

The World We Live In? Tereza Jindrová [… man] perceives reality as something that, being outside of him, is primarily against him; it is something foreign, unknown, existing in itself; it is his boundary and thus his negation. However, since it is his negation, it also forces him to be aware of himself: in this way, reality gives birth to artistic creation. Art always commences in a sudden touch with reality that is outside the rational system, is disjointed from it, and thus lays bare
the sensibility of the spirit and mobilizes its forces trying to get hold of reality. Art’s theme is always non-cognition, loss of orientation, an attempt at a new one. At the same time, it forces man to perceive himself. No matter where he starts, as soon as he becomes aware of the disjunction of existence into self and it, man and universe, both will become manifest in their true monumentality. Thus things are more than a delimitation and negation of the subject; they are a prerequisite and a constitutive part of consciousness. –

Jindřich Chalupecký: The World We Live In (1940). The exhibition of five finalists of Jindřich Chalupecký Award has its specifics: from the perspective of the curator, it is an ambivalent affair – the curator selects neither the exhibiting artists nor the exhibited works, nor does he or she define the main theme or concept of the exhibition. In a way, his or her task rather corresponds to the traditional meaning of the word curator (from Lat. curare, i.e. to take care, to look after) – the one who looks
Jindřich Chalupecký Award after museum collections. In this case, however, the curator looks after the exhibiting artists and tries to be helpful during the conception and production of the resulting works. The contemporary curator’s ambition to create a coherent and mutually interconnected whole through the exhibition is thus naturally left aside. The five independent creative subjects work freely on their own new projects without having to take into consideration what the other finalists are working on. That may result in five completely different presentations that work as a series of separate exhibitions rather than a single common one. Moreover, in its nature, it is still a competition in which each finalist stands on their own and it is up to the curators and organizers to provide equal support, means and space to all of them. All that results in the fact that the final of Jindřich Chalupecký Award cannot be ultimately perceived as a group exhibition in the strong sense of the word. And yet: to create a more complex framework, the curator has one more tool at their disposal – the accompanying text.
It is noticeable already on the level of presentation and the ways in which all five installations relate to the viewers and their physical presence. Even in case of the most “traditional” medium, the paintings by Viktorie Valocká supplemented with objects in space, the artist invites us to enter her work and get seated in one of the sofas covered in painting by the artist. Rather than receiving the aura of the large-sized canvases on the walls from a distance, we are enabled to relax, stop for a moment and perhaps perceive the works differently thanks to that. The other finalists, too, have opted for similar strategies: we can watch Martin Kohout’s film half sitting, half lying; Dominik Gajarský has used comfortable garden deckchairs; in the installations of Romana Drdová and Richard Loskot, we can sit down as well. The artists conceive their installations in a complex way as compact environments with their own atmosphere. We are reminded of our corporeality and thus of the immediate experience of here and now by the touch and surface of objects, the possibility of seeing ourselves in a mirror reflection When building an interpretative or as part of a video recording, umbrella construction for this as well as through the activaparticular exhibition, one can tion of the sense of smell, which symbolically draw on the excerpt is not usually involved in exhifrom one of Jindřich Chalupecký’s bitions. for the capturing of this relation in all cases is the moment of the absence of man and the emphasis on human existence in a broader context achieved through this very absence. As Chalupecký put it: the reality of the world and things is a negation of us as a subject; which, however, leads to self-awareness. With the exception of a video by Romana Drdová and a film by Martin Kohout, all of the exhibited works lack the human figure. Even in Kohout’s case, we observe situations that are characterized by a relative absence of one person in relation to the other; whereas Drdová shows the body as a mere fragment, or object. At the same time, however, it is symptomatic that even if the human figure is lacking altogether, we are still confronted with inherently human attributes – culture, technology, religion, products etc. Gajarský and Valocká prefer to depict animals and plants rather than people, however, they put them in a close relation to our civilization. Besides vanishing dolphins (who might be, with a little exaggeration, perceived as a memento of our ambivalent relation to nature and to the necessity of its protection), Valocká also captures a holy place that is revered and governed by strict rules when it comes to tourist visits but can be characterized by a certain artificiality as well. According to the artist, the cheap rendition of the architectonic elements in the Bahá’í Gardens of Haifa corresponds to the peculiar tradition of this religious teaching while the realistic rendition of the view of the garden raises the metaphorical question of the criteria of authenticity. Gajarský, on the other hand, employs allusions to the genre of the traditional fable while also seeking inspiration in articles and images spread online. Snakes hiding under the
hood of a car and a lonely goose looking at its reflection in a car’s body; both are based on real stories illustrating the contact of wild and domesticated animals and human conveniences. The works by Valocká and Gajarský are imbued with a sense of certain absurdity and contradiction in today’s world. In the film by Martin Kohout, we are both humorously and urgently confronted with bizarre situations straddled between the present and the future: “thieves” who only hunt for selfies in other peoples’ apartments; businessmen who change the products in their shops at the whim of the market on a daily basis; transport companies that control and impose a charge on the efficiency of movement of passengers in the subway. All of these strange and somewhat disturbing situations have a basis in today’s world, in the current technologies and systems; we cannot rule out for sure that that they would develop in a similar way.

while being strangely impersonal and empty on the other hand. The objects of Romana Drdová draw on the urban context and besides an attractive design and seductive materials, they are characterized by a certain sterility. They potentially show the unified aesthetics of the perfect product of tomorrow. The tworoom fragment of an apartment rendered by Richard Loskot is some kind of a desolate imitation of a home that is only inhabited by artificial intelligence supplemented with simulations of other life forms.
In summary, all the final projects are a reflection of the world we live in, and partly an allusion to a world we do not live in yet but whose foundations we are laying already today. The attention of the artists does not focus on man and his subjectivity but rather on what surrounds him, whether it be “natural” nature or the products of civilization. As Chalupecký puts it, things are a prerequisite for the constitution of consciousness and therefore they bring us back to ourselves. Drdová and Loskot create enChalupecký’s thought is deeply vironments in their installations rooted in phenomenology and that are familiar on the one hand existentialism, and since the
sworn defender of modern art was also a great humanist, man as a subject, or human life as such, was consequently always the pivot of his reflections. In conclusion, let us try – with regard to the current intellectual tendencies in philosophy and art that try to reevaluate the superiority of the subject over the object and thus disturb our anthropocentric perspective – to read this interpretation of the final exhibition against the grain: the absence of man, or a greater emphasis on “things” and generally mechanisms and processes that are external to the subject, do not necessarily bring us back to man and to the world in which man lives or will live; on the contrary, it can lead to a reflection on a world in which we (as mankind) do not live and which is still turning around. Such a vision does not necessarily have to take on post-apocalyptic contours; all we have to do is supplement Chalupecký’s proposition of the disjunction of existence to self and world with an awareness of the fact that self is not in the center of all that. To paraphrase one of the exhibited works, we can ask: How well do dolphins know us?

Romana Drdová a vystupují z říše fantazie.

Romana Drdová (1987) graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (Studio of New Media I / Tomáš Svoboda School). She also went to several exchange programs, e.g. at Korean National University in Seoul, at HfG in Karlsruhe (Studio of Urs Lehni) and at the studios of visiting professors Florian Pumhösel and Nicole Wermers at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. Her work, often in the media of object, photography and installation, is characterized by a specific pure aesthetic, even transparency and work with light, matter and emptiness combined with specific materials and processes which are inspired by the context of visual arts as well as by fashion, technology and design. The artist makes a sensitive and metaphorical commentary on the theme of perception and human interaction at the time of “data smog.“ She has introduced her work primarily in Czech independent institutions (solo exhibitions at Prague’s MeetFactory and Karlin Studios) as well as at the National Gallery in Prague and in international context in Vienna, Berlin and Liège, Belgium. beings that are always on the edge, on the boundary between worlds. What are we when we observe ourselves in the mirror which pierces the space of the Trade Fair Palace in the installation The Overlook (2015)? An observer, a part of the work, someone or something that, similarly to the mirror line symmetrically crossing the space, divides and connects it at the same time? Who are we when we walk between worlds, when we move between physical and virtual space? Inspired by the elegance and moderation of Asian cultures, Romana Drdová creates minimalist zen spaces to which one can retire from the chaos whirling outside; although not alluding to it explicitly, her work reflects the transformation of space which loses its uniqueness; at a time when the idea of the multiverse is becoming ideologically acceptable and serious scientists address the question of whether our space is a simulation, the role of the physical world as the only reality is weakened while it still represents a measure of any other reality. In its purity and disembodiment of space, the work of Romana Drdová lets us glance the original notion of virtual space. When Case, the protagonist of Neuromancer, a novel famous for first using the word cyberspace which later spread like wildfire

He considers flesh and blood as an inferior medium, as something to which those who never made it to the higher level are condemned. However, not everybody shares his enthusiasm for shedding the body, the decay it undergoes and the care it needs; not everybody believes that it is possible to record consciousness and leave the body without regret; yet to many, this idea is a fetish whose influence grows along with computer technology and the possibilities

she has been fascinated by the pharmacy and the laboratory, their scents, laboratory glass, atmosphere of strict mystery and experiment performed under precise conditions. Her work reflects this fascination and becomes a certain kind of experiment as well. It is an experiment with space and the modulation of light which influence our mind; an experiment with happy distractedness, serendipity, intuition and sensibility. Besides transparency and a play Romana Drdová thus creates with reflections and allusions to not only a space she would like (disembodied) corporeality, the to inhabit but – elegantly and theme of the laboratory is yet almost unwittingly in accordance another recognition mark of the with her style – also a laboratory work of Romana Drdová; as she of the new era. says herself, since childhood, that become real and leave the realm of imagination. Whether shedding corporeality is a chimera, a dream or a nightmare, virtual realities keep changing our perception with increasing convincingness. It is hard to respond to such a convincing existence of non-physical things in a world where reality used to be defined by a solid physical identity: we are entering the world behind the mirror.

Odstíny růžové, červené a karmínově rudé barvy nechávaly společně s namodralými cévami a šedavými linkami orgánů bezostyšně nahlédnout do útrob těla. Sleduje trajektorii plného zborcení do sebe sama, pohyb zániku ve ztrátě podoby, kdy poslední otisk gumy (pneumatiky) vymaže připomínku existence mršiny.

Mršina se stává Vetřelcem pronikajícím do oblasti individuální percepce a kognice, přičemž svou nevyhraněností, jež doráží a překračuje hranice známého, znovu a znovu upoutává naši pozornost. Prostřednictvím pohledu vstupujeme do otevřeného komunikačního pole, v němž dochází k volné asociativní hře tvarů.
*** Otázka cizosti, moment setkání s Vetřelcem, představuje komplexní problém biologického (pole percepce) i společenského (pole pojmů a jednání) charakteru, proces, jenž propojuje naši praktickou zkušenost s teoretickou reflexí.
42
V rovině pojmenování a jednání Vetřelci dáváme jméno pocházející z našeho slovníku, čímž zajišťujeme, že bude patřit nám a nikoliv sobě.
44
Final 2017 Chceme otevřít situaci, jež umožní permanentní vyjednávání tvarů, významů, norem a hodnot a která nebude předem podléhat napsanému scénáři, jemuž dominuje strach z přeřeknutí a dotyku novotvaru/netvaru. 1 Jean-Luc Nancy, L’Intrus, CR: The New Centennial Review, 2002, č. 3, svazek 2, s. 1. Překlad Susan Hanson. 2 Ibidem, s. 2.

The carcass becomes an Intruder penetrating the field of individual perception and cognition, attracting our attention again and again by its indistinctiveness which pesters us and crosses the boundaries of the known. We embrace the new (non)form by our gaze and examine its qualities. We appear in a state of permanent communication, a negotiation of what we see while our gaze is transformed by the seen. It offers new perspectives, arrangement of elements, their stratification in space. Through the gaze, we enter an open communication field which promotes a free associative play of forms. We accept the possibility of the formation of something new and participate in it by involving our curiosity. We literally appear in a state of physiological awakening.

still remaining an act of mutual communication. The modus of appropriation as a definition of something belonging somewhere is a second way of relating to the Intruder whom we want to tame by our own terms in a fear of possible change and disturbance of the equilibrium of the system. Here, the tool of touching is not the look but the word and the resulting process is that of assimilation which represents unilateral violent communication. Curiosity stopped by fear of an unnamable situation (looking at a formless carcass of a snake under the hood of a car) is the result of the clash of these two positions of the Subject towards the foreign which are always naturally interconnected in the life of the individual and society. The world is not and cannot be formed by isolated fields of the physiologically perceived and socially communicated.
“[The problem of the foreign] is (therefore) what requires thought and, consequently, practice—otherwise the strangeness of the stranger is absorbed before he has crossed the threshold, and strangeness is no longer at stake.“2 In the moment of writing a common text, we experience the loss of balance that is experienced by a small child whose step towards curiosity can be stopped by a countermovement of the ubiquitous fear of the new and undefinable. This fear, also expressed in the rejection of being surprised by something hidden under the hood of the car (or in the wardrobe or under the bed in the context of one’s home), diverts us and the surrounding society towards terminological appropriation and allows the colonization of the perception and thinking of the Intruder. Regarding the Intruder, we think and act through this
text and images since we do not want to get to the point of dislocating the beam of a balance when – first due to rapid assimilation and later due to total absorption – the foreign will no longer exist. We feel a lack of space available for the development of curiosity towards the foreign; which, we are afraid, may lead to a gradual decline of open communication and cognition. We therefore formulate the concept of the “Positive Intruder” and support the position of curiosity which may help restore the balance that is missing. We want to open a situation which will enable a permanent negotiation of forms, meanings, norms and values and which will not follow a preconceived scenario dominated by the fear of a slip of the tongue or the feel of a neoform/nonform. We do not want to possess the “Positive Intruder;” we want to become one.

Martin Kohout zvolil vlastní cestu: pečlivě studuje realitu a zároveň ji nabourává a nechává přetékat.

a zranitelnost lidské existence i její spirituální přesah.
Dopisy i reklamní letáky vybízejí ke srovnání s elektronickou poštou a moderní formou spamu.

Výsledné rendery obsahují různé „glitche“, šumy a hluk, výsledkem čehož působí původní vzor vzdáleně, pustě, nereálně a nedokonale.

Martin Kohout (1984) graduated from the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (Cinematography Department) and Städelschule in Frankfurt (Studio of Simon Starling). He also spent two years studying at the UdK in Berlin. His multimedia work responds to various life situations, the incomprehensibility of today’s world and the inability of an individual to navigate it. Kohout’s principal theme is the medium of the Internet and the self-reflection of man in global communication which brings contradictory experience: convergence and aggression, self-confidence and helplessness. David Foster Wallace and Don DeLillo and British author Zadie Smith. In the Czech context, Patrik Ouředník’s writing may fall within this genre. Hysterical realism is also inherent in the online presentation of Kohout’s work: hypertextual chaos and humor between the lines are supplemented with precise works, photo documentation and numerous links to other projects. Kohout’s work is a universe one is happy to get lost in as it abounds in stimulation and inspiration. Even in person, Kohout brims over with ideas and seems like someone who injects information right into his veins in his free time.
A visual equivalent of hysterical realism in literature can be found in Kohout’s work entitled Free Mail. Filmed in an energetic way reminiscent of a video game, scenes from a military mission or a horror movie, the video follows the viscera of the mailboxes of the citizens of Berlin and offers a detailed look into people’s privacy. The letters and advertising leaflets call for a comparison with electronic mail and the modern form of spam. Thanks to their material form, they seem archaic and even embarrassing yet at the same time human. The violet gloves that appear in one of the mailboxes suggest a confrontation with a story that is untold and should perhaps remain secret. A similar effect is achieved by a leaflet with religious content evoking the fragility and vulnerability of human existence as well as its spiritual dimension. The viewers may experience a voyeuristic pleasure of peeping into someone else’s privacy as well as an empathy with people and their universal need of communication. Last but not least, the video documents the vanishing form of correspondence and provokes the disturbing feeling that mankind has surpassed itself by means of technologies and has become a relic in its own time.

lifespan. The installation reflects on the relationship between man and nature but primarily stages an absurd spectacle satisfying people’s desire to observe reality as if it performed only for them; which means that reality that does not perform according to human expectations most likely escapes our attention. The work is accompanied by a text by Filip Mayer who compares the spectacle in the ZOO with the gallery presentation of art: when watching a spectacle, the viewers feel like they rule the world, however, at the same moment, they also lower their guard, they lose control of their own environment and become vulnerable. These moments of vulnerability and unnaturality of man and his way of life give Kohout’s work an interesting anthropological dimension.
The new technologies employed by Kohout in his work could be labelled as hysterical-realistic in his rendition as well. In one of his latest pieces, he documents reality and reconstructs it by means of 3D modelling software. The original photographs depict an exhibition of artists from Kohout’s circle of friends; the photographs were installed in Dongsi Hutong in Beijing on The Fallout Original Soundtrack blocks of wood used by the installation consists of stylized local inhabitants who prop them cages with crickets, as if these against the wheels of their cars were pets and new companions to protect them from dog urine. of man. Kohout’s works can be characterized as playful and light while also being stimulating, energetic and non-moralistic. The artist addresses the unknown and uncertainty; which, in his rendering, seems like a challenge to expand outside reality and explore the unknown. On the other hand though, both the artist and his work exude curiosity and a desire to get even deeper within what we know today; to grasp reality not only as an object of observation but also as a material environment to which man is immediately and organically linked. Reality as depicted in Kohout’s work is imperfect and remote, however, it also flows over any simulations, reconstructions and representations and gives the human existence a chance for a certain solid base. Kohout’s work radiates the joy of chaos; both the discovered and the created one. The artist’s personal perspective of the world is not obvious; his work rather reveals a fascination with a forensic view of the slightest detail and of how it fits within the bigger whole, story, or how it travels in time. Even if reality is dissected or pixelated, it still remains organic and human. When talking in person, Kohout has mentioned his fascination by the senses, metabolism and sleep, the most essential aspects of human existence in the world. It will be definitely interesting to follow the paths the artist will take on his search for the relation between reality, representation and human existence.

K tabletu se mi přes bluetooth podařilo připojit i klávesnici. Občas to blbne.

Richard Loskot (1984) graduated from the Faculty of Art and Architecture at the Technical University of Liberec (Studio of Visual Communication). He spent two years studying at the Academy der Bildenden Künste in Munich (Studio of Magdalena Jetelová). The work of Richard Loskot is based on processuality and creation of situations and environments addressing human perception. It makes use of sophisticated tools and modern technologies which may ultimately seem like an elaborate magician’s trick to the viewers. He regularly presents his work at solo exhibitions in the Czech Republic and Slovakia (e.g. at the National Gallery in Prague, the Brno House of Arts and Prague City Gallery) as well as at collective exhibitions in the Czech Republic and abroad (e.g. Biennale Giovany Monza, Rotor Gallery in Graz and Astrup Fearnley Museet in Oslo). In 2013, he was one of the finalists of Blumm Prize in Brussels. In 2007, he won the Exit competition (Emil Filla Gallery, Ústí nad Labem); in 2012 and 2014, he was a finalist of Jindřich Chalupecký Award, having won the Audience Award in the latter edition. A Survey of Memories of the Natural World. An attempt at a parallel interpretation of the work by Richard Loskot Ondřej Buddeus Work process: The narrative voice is constructed so as to represent a textual counterpart of the consciousness of a living human being and as such seems to be close to the authorial voice. The text creates a time illusion in which the moment of reading equals the moment of coding: the now of the reader’s reconstruction is the now of the author’s construction. The distance between the content of the consciousness of the constructed author and the current reader is minimal, just like in epistolary literature (letters), memoir literature (memories), lyrical production (subjective poem) and other genres employing means of reflection (musing), retrospection (pausing), or meditation (contemplating). As a side effect of the process, the text, as a conventional technique of structuring and communicating content, is experienced as a natural medium. The introduction includes the work process (basic parameters: who is speaking, in what form, reception effects, media strategies) which seems redundant but produces an alienation effect and increases the

67
Jenomže to možná není pes s bílou srstí, nýbrž náhodná skvrna sava formující mrak, jenž pluje modrou oblohou a zhlíží se v hladině zelené laguny.

Permanentní fyzický kontakt s látkami při celé proceduře ždímání, sušení a opětovného vaření autorčiny ruce otiskuje do tkaniny ještě dřív, než štětec nanese první kontury.
Tedy nikoli mlčenlivým prostředníkem, nýbrž naléhavým způsobem vidění a cítění; tím, co aktivuje smysly, imaginaci a reflexi.

„Taky mám moc ráda Basquiata,“ říká autorka a mohutnou vařečkou do hrnce vmíchává jeho streetartové motivy a hojně přisypává vzdorovitou, subkulturní energičnost.

jejích figur, jejichž podoby a vzájemné vztahy ikonoklasticky nelikviduje, nýbrž ikonoplasticky vychyluje.

Final 2017
Viktorie Valocká (1988) graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (Painting Studio II / Vladimír Skrepl School). She also went to an exchange program at the Bellas Artes department of Universidad Complutense in Madrid and spent two semesters at the studios of visiting professors Florian Pumhösel and Silke Otto Knapp at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. Valocká is primarily a painter who also works in the media of collage, drawing and ceramics. Her often large-size paintings are clearly inspired by early 20th century art rather than by the current trends on the international scene. Nevertheless, her almost abstract work uses a very contemporary language and has a mature signature style. The artist has introduced her work primarily in the context of the Czech independent scene, however, her work has also been exhibited at the National Gallery in Prague and the Sør-Troms Museum in Trastad, Norway. In 2016, she went to a residency in Athens within Are-events. Tomáš Jirsa is a literary theorist.

of external form; however, that is only true until the once carefully hatched and once furioso sweeping lines, painted objects and blurred stains collide with the artist’s leitmotif: the graffiti tag which imparts significantly greater authorship to the fabrics than a proper name would. To illustrate these peculiar collisions which occur between the represented objects as well as the employed techniques and whose progress and placement is more essential than recognizable beings, landscapes and objects, all one has to do is look at one of the tamer images; which – as is the case with most of Valocká’s works – is untitled. A white dog is outlined on the blue-green background; a dilettantishly scribbled torso of human hands is looming over it, lowering a chain towards the animal. All the potential symbolism coded in our linguistic experience as well as in the iconological tradition comes to naught though, since the white
Viktorie Valocká dog does not simply go “doggo unchained” to instinctively escape the clutches of the sinister black tangle but rather lies down under the chain of its own accord, waiting there in a docile pose. However, perhaps it is not a dog with white fur but a random blot of bleach forming a cloud sailing across the blue sky and looking at its own image on the surface of a green lagoon. But then something unexpected happens and these barely born germs of mini stories dissolve in the moment of the ex post typical for the artist: a moment of an additional intervention. This intervention mostly comes into play in the form of a doodle or a tag. Suddenly the viewer no longer faces an image of a waiting dog or a floating cloud but rather a page torn out of an autograph book wrenched from a schoolmate’s hand by the brat of the class who hastily scribbled down his name on it: VIKY.
bedclothes in a local second-hand shop. What follows next is a manual process with chance playing the main role in her home studio. The artist repeatedly soaks, boils and stirs textiles in a giant enameled pot and then dyes them with wax, fixes them with vinegar or sprinkles them with chlorine bleach. The blurred color areas may form a compact primer or an imprint of all added substances, giving birth to the artist’s favorite damask pattern. The permanent physical contact with the fabrics during the procedure of wringing, drying and repeated boiling imprints the artist’s hands into the fabric even before the brush applies the first contours.
However, the fact that these are tie-dyed bedclothes and fabrics boiled in a pot should not suggest some kind of a mysterious ritual with oneiric visions and scents of wild nights rising above the stove. It is not about dreamy post-romanticism The Pot as a Modus or fetishistic wallowing in rags Operandi stained with physical residua but rather about the manual One can hardly comprehend sim- mastering of the qualities of ilar mischievous acts and commaterial and penetrating the plex relationships that drive the mechanisms of its memory. artist’s paintings without looking While in case of primed canvas, into her “combined technique” the primer is covered by layers which means much more than a of color that can be repainted working method in this case. at will or simply scraped off, the absorbent fabric gradually An absolute majority of the soaks the individual colors into works by Viktorie Valocká is its texture regardless of the rendered not on canvas but on number of layers applied. Final 2017 temporality drives all the stages of the creative process while setting the rhythm of contact with the viewer. Color permeates the fabric, the figures permeate color while also permeating us and the circle is closed by the indispensable touch the viewer gives the fabrics along with their look in an attempt to touch and feel the sheets of their own image. Moreover, the fabric is no longer a mere base and bearer of what is applied to it; on the contrary, it becomes an independent medium; not a silent mediator but an urgent way of seeing and feeling; that which activates the senses, imagination and reflection. The paintings by Viktorie Valocká are unthinkable without the haptic and visual movement of their material; a movement which is – and deliberately so – out of the artist’s control. Tagged Art History It is not only the body of painting, structuring all by which it is immediately covered, but also art history that boils in the pot. The artist treats its chapters the same way she treats her second-hand textiles: she mixes them, boils them, wrings them and fixes them, possibly also sprinkles them with caustic. It is not a systematic elaboration of others' impulses and definitely not an imitation. The process of influence is similar to when a white shirt ends up in a pot with red towels: a rarely worn wardrobe item suddenly becomes a popular summer outfit. Long days spent by dyeing merge with hours filled with leafing through a catalogue of the artist’s favorite German painters; the result being a lucky circumstance and improvised chance. Sigmar Polke plays first fiddle; not only for rejecting the canvas in favor of taming kitchen curtains, fabrics with a tiger pattern, woolen blankets,
striped pajamas and wallpapers but also for the DIY mixture of chemistry and alchemy with which he covered his fabrics not only with classic paint but also with arsenic, gunpowder, fruit juice and resin. The artist cooking beside him is A. R. Penck, remelting the impulses of new figuration into the neoprimitivist style with which he created objects on the border between human beings and totems, and whose canvases resound with a whole gamut of echoes of cave paintings, African tribal art, and a germinal graffiti gesture. “I also love Basquiat,” says the artist, mixing his street art motives into the pot by a massive stirring spoon and adding handfuls of defiant subcultural energy.
Face to face with the atmospheric mise-en-scène of these works and the strongly yet non-violently deformed figures, it would be easy to succumb to the impression that one of the chapters that is imprinted in the fabrics and survives in them is art brut; not its instinctive and unschooled form but the form of art brut that is informed in spite of itself, coming from the brush of Jean Dubuffet and primarily his figurative oil paintings. Since the given analogy is as clear as day, the artist does not hesitate to make an ironic commentary just in case by incorporating disturbing elements alluding to a completely different imaginary repertoire, whether they be gloves placed around an “art brut” head or regular dots surrounding an anonymous torso. Other inspirations boiling in The serious position of canonic the same bath are implicit allu- art brut is turned inside out and sions to the enigmatic objects all the figuration – in terms of of Toyen, amorphous bodies of representation of a human Jindřich Štyrský, memories figure or face – of the above of the initiation encounter with mentioned movements and influJitka Válová one year before ences is creatively deformed Valocká enrolled at the Acade- and opened towards impudent my of Performing Arts in Prague and unfinished figurality. as well as her enchantment with Válová’s late sharp line evokThis impudence manifests iting the heartbeat drawn by an self primarily by the tag whose electrocardiogram. However, if read in the context of the figural practices of the artist and her culinary approach to visual impulses tried and tested by history, they can also be perceived as certain self-referential indicators, indexes, which refer primarily to their own space. Making tags on bed sheets has the same effect as making them on a wall; that of delimiting one’s own territory. Viktorie Valocká gestically marks out her territory not only against the logic of a clear purpose but primarily in relation to the above mentioned chapters of art history. “It doesn’t matter when you can’t tell” The works by Viktorie Valocká are subversive, however, it is a subversion that is different from the one driven by her guerilla nature, liking for grim; a British music genre filled with ethnic rootlessness and social revolt; a loathing of commerce, catchy pop songs and the airs of the visual arts scene. Playful echoes of this subversion can be found in her fanzine VICTORY with the subtitle “A magazine for people that buy it” and in the attached presents, such as a crumpled plastic cap with the following instructions for use: “as a greenhouse for your plants, as overshoes for the hospital, for vomiting, for fish, for children, for money, as a facial mask.” This subversion goes deepest in her figures; however, instead of iconoclastically destroying their forms and mutual relations, she iconoplastically deviates them. An unchained dog does not run away but contemplates; the realistically rendered, luxurious though miniature yacht levitates in space upside down; indexes in the form of gloves refer neither to modernist fragmentation nor to the postmodern fascination by the seductive play of

These can be seen in another painting capturing mythology deviating from its usual course: Hydra (2016) showing the body of a giant snake which bursts into a frenetic snarl of dark ornaments while a mushroom cloud is blooming in the background. The feverish gesturality of the lines corresponds to the luxuriant outlines of the mythical hydra penetrating the brain synapses of the viewer; if these scenes do involve a portrait element, it is carried out not through direct depiction but rather through the composition of the encounter. The cloud has the features of an observing torso and the serpentine cerebral lines spurting out of the hydra belong both to the observer and to the painter.
which blinks and fades; on the self-portrait (2016), eyes float abstractedly under the arch of Japanese eyebrows rid of the redundant circumstances of a face. Their gaze is as vague and silent as the shapes of the depicted half-beings in motion. In an absolute absence of literality, this gaze assumes the role of an insinuator giving our
gaze a decided instruction to be reciprocal but also deautomated, deflected and daring. What about all those eyes, Viktorie? “I look at the viewers through them.” The observer thus becomes not only a living surface absorbing the depicted figures but also an extension of their scene, a medium of their sensory and affective effect: “Rather
The figure in the sense of an open and moving form whose unambiguous definability gives in to its sensory, associative and affective force is ubiquitous in these paintings yet always anchored in the particular position in space. Without its position, arrangement and relocation, it bears no meaning whatsoever. Whereas the artist is in the least indifferent to the classic human figure with a tried and tested anatomy, the figurality of the viewer standing in front of the painting plays a crucial role. What matters is by far not only their latent, anticipated and desired presence but actually their physical presence. The anthropology of these paintings thus consists in shifting the human figure from its visibility to the level of embodying its perspective. The paintings by Viktorie Valocká often feature floating eyes; once they radiate a yellow glare from behind a black leather mask, once there is but one eye, like in Siko Sik Siki (2015)

Clemens von Wedemeyer: Nebeská havěť Moravská galerie v Brně Clemens von Wedemeyer: Vermin of the Sky Moravian Gallery in Brno 22. 9. 2017 – 14. 1. 2018
Dílo navazuje na předchozí umělcův výzkum na téma diskurzivní, sociální a symbolické hodnoty sochy ve vztahu k filmu, aktérům i divákům, jíž se Wedemeyer zabýval na výstavách The Cast v římském Národním muzeu umění 21. století MAXII (2013) a následně v rámci projektu Cast Behind You The Bones Of Your Mother představeném berlínskou galerií KOW v roce 2015. Guest artist of Jindřich Chalupecký Award 2017.
The novelty of last year’s edition of the Jindřich Chalupecký Award for young visual artists was the launch of the tradition of an international guest who would introduce his or her solo project in parallel with the exhibition of the award finalists. It would be a distinctive contemporary artist whose work resonates with the current events on the Czech art scene, although it may not have been introduced here so far. After presenting an exhibition project of Laure Prouvost in 2016, our guest for 2017 is the Berlin-based artist Clemens von Wedemeyer. In his conceptual moving image works and audiovisual installations, Wedemeyer often works with (film) archives, historical and symbolic references while adding engaged commentaries which link the archival material to contemporary issues.
With most of his research drawing on site-specific inspirations, Clemens von Wedemeyer pays particular attention to social and physical constellations and power relations connected to a particular space in its present or historical moment. In Vermin of the Sky, a project created especially for this occasion, the artist made a subjective selection of several works from the Moravian Gallery’s sculpture collections, resulting in a new video work presented at the Atrium Gallery at Pražák Palace, and an installation intervening into the permanent collection display in the same building. The artist created a poetic yet political narrative, building unexpected connections between both historically and conceptually disparate works: from a largely damaged Gothic Madonna through archetypal portraits by canonical Czech artists Josef Václav Myslbek and Vincenc Makovský to less renowned works and artists. In a surreal meeting in the outer space, digitalized sculptures engage in dominance and submission exercises which turn a bust of a locally meritorious general, a mask of the prime Czech patron saint and Prometheus’ head into mere physical matter, played out in a newly told Space Odyssey. The work is a continuation of the artist’s research on the discursive, social and symbolic value of sculpture in relation to film, the actor, and also the spectator, which Wedemeyer already explored in the exhibitions The Cast, presented at MAXII Rome in 2013, and the subsequent project Cast Behind You The Bones Of Your Mother, shown in KOW Berlin in 2015. Výstavu laskavě podpořili Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen e. V. a Česko-německý fond budoucnosti. / The exhibition is kindly supported by the Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen e. POKROKU
Má vytřeštěné oči, otevřená ústa a rozepjatá křídla. Právě tak by mohl vypadat anděl dějin. Jeho tvář je obrácena směrem k minulosti. Avšak zatímco my máme před očima postupné zřetězení událostí, on pozoruje jedinou katastrofu, jež vrší samé trosky a skládá mu je k nohám. A právě tuto bouři nazýváme pokrokem. Walter Benjamin

Guest: Clemens von Wedemeyer Vermin in a Storm of Progress Karina Kottová There is a painting by Klee called Angelus Novus. An angel is depicted there who looks as though he were about to distance himself from something which he is staring at. His eyes are opened wide, his mouth stands open and his wings are outstretched. The Angel of History must look just so. His face is turned towards the past. Where we see the appearance of a chain of events, he sees one single catastrophe, which unceasingly piles rubble on top of rubble and hurls it before his feet. He would like to pause for a moment so fair, to awaken the dead and to piece together what has been smashed. But a storm is blowing from Paradise, it has caught itself up in his wings and is so strong that the Angel can no longer close them. The storm drives him irresistibly into the future, to which his back is turned, while the rubble-heap before him grows sky-high. That which we call progress, is this storm. Walter Benjamin
linked to such notions. However, our perception is too limited to let us understand the storm in such terms. Therefore we need to place ourselves – or other creatures in which we assume similar mindsets – on the edge of totality, hoping that from this perspective it could be grasped or measured. For Benjamin, the Angel of History was this kind of an observer, captured so eloquently by Klee as both distancing himself and being drawn to the universal sequence of events.
Through his project Vermin of the Sky, Clemens von Wedemeyer tests whether inanimate matter formed by artistic vision into an entity commonly understood as sculpture can also serve as such a witness to the boundaries of time and eternity, and how floating on this border influences temporal existence. The video and sculptural installation stems from the artist’s research of the Moravian Gallery sculpture collections, which include works from the Gothic period up to contemporary art. As it is common in global museum practice, individual pieces, however canonic, are The claim that time is the only stored in well-conditioned deway through which we can perpositories more often than disceive the totality of being origiplayed – from the perspective nates in the German philosophi- of the observer just somewhat cal tradition just as the quotation avoiding the inevitable journey above, although it is more than through time. Wedemeyer sea century older than Benjamin’s lected several pieces which eswritings. Here they while the “storm of progress” certainly find themselves closer seems to lift up the remains of to the absolute nature of the past events and twirl them into storm: they leave their historinew constellations made of old cal, artistic and symbolic qualiorders. The sculptures that Wedemeyer selected for his version of the Space Odyssey have all been conserved and classified by the museum curators for their symbolic and material value, although each might have received different attention in such respects. Departing from the storages, they now form quite an unexpected narrative, a peculiar constellation, which leaves their art historical placement aside to allow for a new reading. A bust of Jean-Louis Raduit de Souches by the sculptor Jan Christián Pröbstl, who was notable for the Moravian baroque era, represents a French general active during the Thirty Years’ War. Raduit de Souches initially fought on the side of the Huguenots during the siege of his hometown La Rochelle, and later, after joining the Swedish army and finally the Habsburgs, he became significant for Brno as he defended the town against an enemy army that largely outnumbered his troops. Perhaps just as the legacy of the depicted persona, Pröbstl’s piece appears as already halfway towards the storm, with a nose partly missing and its hair curling into shapes ready to match galactic twirls. The early 20th century Mask of St. Wenceslas by Josef Václav Myslbek is a rather modest work compared to the famous equestrian statue of this prime Czech patron saint by the same sculptor, placed on Prague’s Wenceslas Square where the revolutionary sounds of jingling keys turned into a touristic shopping frenzy. On the other side, where such sounds no longer have an echo, an asteroid named after Myslbek floats in peace, waiting for the sculptor’s creations to eventually join it. Portrait V. by Vlasta Prachatická-Kolíbalová, unfortunately one of the few female artists in the museum’s collections, also appears as keen on joining the space parade, possibly longing to become a second moon looking
Guest: Clemens von Wedemeyer at Earth with a blue gaze. Another female, a Gothic Madonna by an unknown 14th century sculptor, still proudly holds her divine baby, although she has lost her own facial contours. When in space, stars will certainly shine through. The Ruin of Life by Bohumil Kafka represents a thinker who turns his sight towards the inner world, rather than staying with the outside trouble. He explores the border between the form of human body and pure matter even more strongly than the bust of Raduit de Souches. Perhaps the most symbolic sculpture for the entire project is the 1934 Prometheus’ Head. Prometheus himself represents the mythological sculptor par excellence, who with the help of Pallas Athena brought his creation to life and thus laid the grounds for humankind. Here he is grasped through a dialectic approach between figuration and abstraction that the notable avant-garde artist Vincenc Makovský
historical moment in a process that is at a certain point proclaimed as finished. However, it will never stay at one point, in an ideal condition. Even the artist is well aware of this, although he would prefer to forget that the storm will inevitably take his masterpiece and bring about motion, decay, misinterpretation, recontextualization. From the Christoph Schlingensief and Alexander Kluge once suggest- position of the observer, a sculpture will always be in flux. For ed that German monuments Wedemeyer, more importantly, should be deported to the uniit actually embodies this flux verse and act as stars at night. This is perhaps a similar attempt and at the same time reflects upon the affairs around. It is to rid them (and potentially us as the observers / actors) of the distancing itself from the pile of heavy traces of history and poli- broken and forgotten artworks tics and leave them in a situation that the storm has left behind and at the same time being which is absolutely careless about such notions, highlighting dragged to the future, knowing that eventually it will also end up quite different properties. As an earthly matter, sculpture is a on the same stack. No wonder why sculptures often appear so kind of crossroads, a memento melancholic. Even if their fifteen in time and space. To a degree minutes of fame actually lasted it is always a self-portrait of the artist, and at the same time for centuries, they know that their only way to the absolute it longs to capture someone is through decadence in time. or something else, to frame a often employed. Makovský intended to create a proud, internally contradictory but not torn being, with courage to face danger, natural spiritual sovereignty and will to decisive acts. If all terrestrial connotations are lost on this uncanny voyage, such qualities might stay.

Romana Drdová
Romana Drdová vychází ve své tvorbě z neutuchající fascinace žitou zkušeností – zkušeností jedince ve světě definovaném globalizací, konzumací, komodifikací a virtualizací. Nachází inspiraci v módě, gastronomii, designu, reklamě, kosmetice a obecně v produktové estetice, kterou využívá k obnažování absurdity nadprodukce. S dotykem spojuje i potřebu intimity a důvěrnosti. In her work, Romana Drdová draws on her perpetual fascination by the lived experience; the experience of an individual in a world defined by globalization, consumption, commodification and virtualization. She thus finds inspiration in fashion, gastronomy, design, advertising, cosmetics and generally product aesthetics which she uses and even misuses by exposing the absurdity of overproduction. The main motives in her final installation include emotional estrangement on the one hand and physical presence/experience on the other hand. The artist raises the question of how one is to cope with the need to feel something. According to the artist, a possible answer is given by the objects of daily consumption; by their pleasant shapes, materials and structures, they satisfy the need for the experience of touching. Drdová expresses this urge by the haptic nature of her objects, composition with diverse materials and their color scheme. Touch is naturally linked to the need of intimacy and closeness. On the one hand, Drdová plays with inducing a sense of an almost erotic tension (textile surface, physical fragments in the video), however, at the same time, she is also interested in the very opposite: an impersonal, asexual form of emotional interaction; a faceless partner that can even be a robot. While we share our experiences and impressions impersonally through communication networks and social media or perhaps even with virtual companions, our immediate touch with others is at the same time impersonalized by multiplying barriers; Drdová notices division and “protective” elements in administrative offices (counters), in restaurants (tables in separate boxes), in shopping malls, at airports and in similar “transit” zones, or even in places of pilgrimage and in churches which became a dehumanized tourist attraction. The artist transposes these very elements into simple objects made out of acrylic glass which she places on an elevated platform so they do not escape our attention, arranging them in mutual relations and thus creating a new dynamic telling of society and human relationships.

Do zvířecích monologů Gajarský současně nenápadně infiltroval úryvky z klasické literatury o vztahu drog a moderního myšlení (Thomas DeQuincey: Zpověď poživače opia, 1822; Aldous Huxley: Brány vnímání, 1954; Sadie Plant: Psaní na drogách, 1999). The main domain of the work of Dominik Gajarský is photography and moving image, often in confrontation with the written or spoken word, with the artist using specialized literature, poetry, anecdotes and popular wisdom as his sources. In the past, he has also employed color lights for an atmospheric installation of his works. These elements are again concentrated in his final project. The room adapted to the screening of his latest film is far from being a neutral black box: the green illumination, the slanted projection angle and the chance to lie down in deckchairs make the viewers relax and immerse themselves in an environment whose overall effect is enhanced by an olfactory experience. Gajarský, who is experienced in perfume making, used a pure hemp essence to create a scent interconnecting our physical reality and the watched video. Combining a non-narrative visual component and a personal narration, the film is a continuation of the artist’s interest in animals, their relationship with man and primarily the anthropomorphism of animals as an expression of human culture. This time, he has rendered the utterances of a snake and a goose in the manner of a fable. Their stories are inspired by “real events” – sensational news found online by the artist whose common denominator is the interaction of an animal and a car. However, they also embrace general human emotions such as fear, loneliness and disappointment. Moreover, Gajarský inconspicuously infiltrated the animal monologues, interspersing them with excerpts from classic literature dealing with the relation of drugs and modern thought (Thomas De Quincey: Confessions of an English Opium Eater, 1822; Aldous Huxley: The Doors of Perception, 1954; Sadie Plant: Writing on Drugs, 1999). Although the selected sentences do not immediately refer to their sources, they ultimately put Gajarský’s work in a slightly different light; the purport of the video and the installation can be perceived as ironic or also provocative in terms of the appreciation we usually have for sober human rationality.

Martin Kohout
The work by Martin Kohout which he perceives as bordering on short film and video receives a premiere at the final of Jindřich Chalupecký Award while also constituting a part of a larger project which includes other videos and expert texts and which was supported by the Video in Common production company. The central theme of the project is the issue of night work and its social, economic, physical and mental aspects. The work presented at the final exhibition includes several episodes which do not have the structure of a narrative sequence but could rather work separately. The linking element of all the parts is a group of three half-fictional characters who never meet at one time: a partner couple Asli and Bora and their friend Sung. While Asli works during the day, Bora goes to work at night; the time they spend together is thus very limited and the main portion of their interaction takes places via notes and messages. The theme of night work, as well as the alternation of the day and night regime, rather constitutes a contextual background for the central motive of an asynchronous relationship, or human communication and its ways in the 21st century. Another significant layer of meaning is represented by modern technologies and the ways in which they transform our everyday lives; whether in terms of living in an urban environment, protection of property or purchase of goods. The messages exchanged by Bora and Asli resemble the depiction of weird dreams or visions “under the influence”; at the same time, they have the form of rather disturbing anecdotes, as they capture situations which we may not experience today but could easily imagine experiencing in the near future.

Richard Loskot
The final project of Richard Loskot is an ambitious interconnection of a whole range of motives and processes which have appeared in his previous work within a new whole. The multimedia installation straddling two halls of Pražák Palace revives the history of the particular building which used to serve as a residential building. By means of minimalist forms, Loskot creates an environment reminiscent of an apartment interior – a study room/bed room and a salon/dining room. The main characteristic of this apartment, however, is the absence of its inhabitants and their immediate traces. The formal purity borders on emptiness and even those elements that might produce a reassuring impression of coziness – the singing of a canary, a reading voice, sun reflections or a resting cat – paradoxically seem oddly estranged. The artist also challenges our vision by using modern technologies to put obstacles in our way, determine our view angle, and double and enhance the image of reality by a virtual (and in a way richer) dimension. Richard Loskot has mastered the art of illusion and deception, however, what matters is not achieving the perfect illusion but rather the moment of revelation in which we may realize the purely technological nature of something we considered “natural” in the first moment. The very category of naturality is thus challenged.

Experimenty s barvením a odbarvováním látek (mj. použitých prostěradel) otevřely Valocké nové možnosti práce s obrazem i jeho instalace v prostoru. The painting style of Viktorie Valocká can be hardly mistaken for someone else’s: on the one hand, her work is reminiscent of 20th century styles such as Informel, Tachism, the surrealist décalques of Max Ernst and Czech artificialism in the rendition of Toyen; on the other hand, it convenes with the current tendencies of renewed interest in materiality and manuality as well as in merging applied forms (textile art) and “high” art. Experimentation with dyeing and bleaching textiles (including used bed sheets) opened up new possibilities of working with image and its installation in space. The cluster of three large-size paintings made for the final exhibition is in a way a return to “classic” painting; i.e. painting on primed canvas stretched on a frame; however, at the same time, it draws on the artist’s previous experience with dyeing textiles and their formal register. The combined technique using acrylics, oil paint and wax is based on a cumulation of color layers which blend into an impenetrable matter in some places while attracting attention by their luminosity and transparency in other places. The common denominator of all the canvases is a nervous calligraphic line reminiscent of automatic drawing. Under the layers of paint, all the three canvases reveal a hardly recognizable motive of a dolphin which gave name to one of the paintings and which is also seen on the sofas covered with painting. The sofas complement the traditional wall triptych by a spatial installation which enables the viewers to experience painting from a completely different perspective. Valocká usually finds inspiration for her paintings in things and people in her environment as well as on her international trips. The largest of the exhibited canvases entitled HighFa combines abstract surface and realistic detail in a painting of the sacred garden Bahá’í in Haifa, Israel. To the artist, the “faithful rendering” of a place that is administered as sacred although it was constructed only a few decades ago is an ironic commentary on realist painting.
