Hi

Redbulls!

First off, we have 2 important events besides our DCM that are coming up this month so make sure to check the calendar and the D37S instagram page for the following things.

● Rose Bowl Parade Float Decorating

● Kiwanis Christmas Party

All of the information needed to sign up is on the socials!

I hope all of you have a wonderful holiday season, try gingerbread house decorating if you haven’t because that’s my personal favorite! Or just watch some Charlie Brown or whatever you like to do. Relax before this new year starts, because you’re going to need it.

That’s all for me, see you guys next year in 2023!

What’s Stompin’, Redbulls?

Happy holidays, everyone! I can’t believe 2022 is already coming to an end. This means we’re also more than halfway through the term–I can’t believe it! It just seems as if I was Anna’s elect yesterday.

The holidays are some of my favorite times of the year. I love to go on day trips to Julian over winter break and go to Christmas Card lane with my friends (this year, I have college apps to finish, so we’ll see if those happen).

I’ve been reflecting on my goals for this year and setting new ones for 2023. In terms of our division, I’ve decided to try and set up more social and service events with our Kiwanians. Hopefully, these are reflected through the events that we offer in the coming year.

I hope you all have a great end of year, Redbulls!

We all drove separately to Mission Bay, Fiesta Island beach. Once I arrived I signed in and waited with Raisa and Jerry for everyone else to arrive. After getting trash bags and gloves, everyone as a group headed towards the water to begin looking for trash. Raisa and I found lots of bottle caps in the sand, and she found a seagull feather. As we approached the main road we turned back and saw everyone walking across the street and over the hill. The hill was made of unstable sand and most of it got into our shoes. But as it turns out, behind the hill was this sort of abandoned trash dump. After leaving the smelly dump area, we followed Jerry and his group to circle all the way around the bay to the canoe rental areas until around 10:00 when we started to head back.

For today's service project, Emily Hays and I volunteered at the annual fall festival by selling water bottles. The bottles were 2 dollars each and by volunteering, we were able to practice money handling, and customer service. Additionally, we met many new Kiwanis members, and also saw other Poway students who were enjoying themselves at the festival. Overall, it was a great experience, especially for my first ever key club volunteer opportunity.

All the Key Club members gathered at lunch, prepared to write cards for hospitalized children. We were given a short presentation on what to write and what not to write, and then started making the cards. I brought colored pencils, and my friends brought paper, markers, and scissors, so we shared our supplies. On my card, I wrote “you’re so awesome” and “just make sure to SMILE!” I also added some decorations (stars, hearts, and a teddy bear) to make it look nice. I sincerely hope that I made an impact, even if it was a small one, in someone’s life. Hopefully I will put a smile on a child’s face.

This month in key club, I participated in zooniverse activities. It consisted of classifying different images regarding different topics through citizen science. It was a unique volunteering opportunity because I was able to learn how to classify and use the program, but also learn more about the different animal species. Drones for Ducks was one of the Zooniverse projects I participated in, and I had to classify different birds like ducks, goose, and crane.

I participated in Zooniverse: Snapshot Karoo, which is a virtual event. In this event, I identified wildlife that is native to Africa by observing snapshots of images taken of the animals by an automatic camera. To correctly categorized the animal I chose for a selection of indicators in order to narrow down what species the animal was from. I enjoyed this event as it was ex-tremely convenient, and I could complete it at home or whenever I had free time.

This month RB KeyClub continued on the virtual service project of Charity Miles in which you run while a timer is playing and companies are able to sponsor your running in order to donate to other charities. Getting out and hiking with friends especially was really fun since we knew we were doing good for our community while doing it!

I decided to participate in a water station at the beach this past weekend! I had a lot of fun participating in this event because not only was I able to help others, but I also got to do it in the beautiful scenery. I love the beach because it is very comforting, and getting the opportunity to give the runners who ran past us cups of water, it only increased my satisfaction. I’m so glad I got to help the runners in need of quenching their thirst, and I cannot wait for more opportunities like this!
