A message from your LTG...

Hello Red Bulls!

First off, I am extremely honored and excited to be serving you all this term! This club, division, and organization have all given more than I could ever ask for. Key Club, for me, became many things: a safe haven of service, an irreplaceable learning experience, and a family I can count on. My personal mission is to ensure that Key Club can become all of those things for every member.

Get ready red bulls, because I’ve have an amazing term prepared for all of us. From division leadership, Red Bull Rewards 2.0, joint region events, inter-club bonding, RTC, Fall Rally, to DCON 2017 and more to come, I will be here by your sides. Thank you again for this opportunity to further serve this phenomenal division. As Lieutenant Governor, my role is not to embody a superior and commanding title, but rather, to act as your ultimate servant-leader. I was elected by you, for you, so reach out to me anytime! In words of my great heroine Kim Possible, call me, beep me, if you want to reach me!

From April 8th to the 10th, the CaliforniaNevada-Hawaii District Key Club held its 70th annual District Convention. For those who don’t know, the District Convention (or DCON for short) marks the ending of the old term and the beginning of the new Key Club term. DCON is a majestic place to meet up with Key Clubbers from all over your District, and in our case, from as far as Hawaii. Honestly DCON was an eye opening experience for me, I got to experience the Key Club ohana in its fullest, as well as seeing the vast impact the organization has on the world. I was graced with the opportunity with presenting a workshop alongside my Lt. Governor and Division Executive Assistant.

Our presentation was on finding and promoting service projects. There is something humbling to be said about the opportunity to impart a little of my Key Club knowledge to the next generation of service do’ers. By no means do I know everything about service finding or coordination, but the fact that my peers and I came together united by a single passion, service was wonderful.

Moving onto the General Sessions, I witnessed first hand the sheer spirit and numbers the Cali-Nev-Ha District boasts. The main hall was flooded with Key Clubbers from all around the west coast (west coast best coast am I right?) Each general session held a key aspect of DCON. Whether it was commencing the 70th DCON, learning about the Kiwanis family, or retirement, each General Session served it’s purpose and allowed all Key Clubbers from the District to come together and celebrate something. Among the four sessions, the first one

had to be my favorite. As my Division walked in, all starry-eyed and caught up in the crowd, we were greeted by the District Governor, Joshua Nuesca. Everything seemed so surreal. Up to that point, everyone and everything about the upper echelons or far reaches of Key Club seemed so distant to me. To be able to meet and interact with the District Board and Lt. Governors from all over the district was awesome. The greatest of all was the inspirational speaker, Heather Schultz. Even a week after DCON, I am still shaken up and invigorated by Heather’s words. She taught us that there is no impossible, only an “I’m possible.” The passion and energy of her time on stage was phenomenal. She taught us the virtue of never doubting oneself, and when faced with failure, to persevere and march on.

Even off stage, Heather was an amazing person. I was fortunate enough to catch her during our lunch session the next day and I went up to her and thanked her for taking the time to speak with us. Positive energy just exuded from her, and I couldn’t help but smile the entire time I talked to her. District Convention changed me, and not just with Heather’s speech. District Convention showed me the expanses of Key Club, how large of an impact we as an organization have. District Convention inspired me beyond what my time with Division 37 South has. I am truly grateful to have attended the 70th annual District Convention, without an game-changing experience as that one, I am not sure if my passion for service would burn as strong as it does right now.

March DCM: Kiwanis Day of Service

Every year, Kiwins, Kiwanis, and Key Clubs all come together to collaborate for Day of Service, where clubs create their own service project that directly benefits others in the community! My home club [Westview] came up with the idea of decorating mason jars, filling them with encouraging notes and messages, and donating them to kids at Rady Children’s Hospital. A lot of patients at Rady Children’s Hospital are young kids who are often very ill and bedridden, making life exceedingly challenging for them. To reach out to them, we definitely wanted to do something on a more personal level to connect with them in a very unique way. Equipped with glitter, glue, markers, and mini-mason jars, we began to decorate the mason jars to make them colorful and animated, while making sure that no two mason jars would be the same!

Afterwards, we started writing short messages or quotes that would reassure, comfort, and even inspire those kids. By making each mason jar unique, the kids would know that we truly cared about them, as we made each one special and individualized just for them. Day of Service, as a whole, was very interesting because each club came up with separate and distinct ideas for service, and anyone could walk around and participate in another club’s activities. For example, besides working on my own project with the mason jars, I made pinwheels to help support Syrian refugees, crafted story books for children that would be donated to Father Joe’s Villages, and even knit baby caps, which would also go to Rady Children’s Hospital. All in all, Day of Service was a huge success, as all of us were able to support so many different parts of our community in very unique ways.
