Shell Ash White bruises the beam of darkness, darkness breathing deeply – seeking ...

A white shell surfaces unshaped by unseen sand and sea slightly lustrous in its memory of loss in the here and now it relives, the slow shunting and shedding the sharing of its skin, its surface, itself, its shellness – that second skeletal life – with and into the flow that grates and craves, that consumes and creates its dispersing appearance as shell ash.

Embodied creativity process Irish trans-disciplinary artist Maria Kerin invited a selection of Estonian artists and writers to partake in public site-specific performances open to the public. Over 2 weeks from January 18th to February 1st, 2013, there were 11 performances on the stairwell of the Tartu Centre for Creative Industries, Tartu, Estonia. In this co-alignment, Maria firstly led each artist through 20 minutes of Embodied Creativity Process to quieten the mind, listen to the body, calm the self and open ones senses to the space. This opened up new pathways to creativity by breaking conceptual responses and cultural boundaries. A bucket of ashes and tracing paper were the materials offered, placed on the stairwell.

This shared embodied awareness transitioned into an experiential participatory creative response, unique to each person, through spontaneous embodied movement and mark making. This created a series of short performances lasting less that half an hour, typically of a slow tempo slow, allowing the “meetings” to be framed by photography.

Graphic designer and photographer Michael Walsh, witness to each performance, also photographed these “meetings”. After each performance, a sequential selection of these images were shown on three small digital screens in the stairwell.

The final outcome is this book, designed by Michael Walsh and co-edited with Maria Kerin.

Olemise loovusprotsess Iiri transdistsiplinaarne kunstnik Maria Kerin kutsus kümme eesti kunstnikku ja kirjanikku osalema avalikkusele avatud kohaspetsiifilises taideetenduste sarjas. Kahe nädala jooksul 2013. aasta 18. jaanuarist 1. veebruarini leidis Tartu Loomemajanduskeskuse treppidel aset 11 taideetendust. Nende raames viis Maria esmalt kunstnikega läbi 20-minutilise olemise loovusprotsessi, et vaigistada mõistuse häält, kuulata keha, rahustada “mina” ja avada meeled ruumile. Nii lõi kontseptuaalsete reaktsioonide kõrvaleheitmine ja kultuuriliste piiride lõhkumine loovusele uusi võimalusi. Ainsad osalejatele kättesaadavad materjalid olid trepile asetatud kalkapaber ning pangetäis tuhka.

See jagatud olemise teadlikkus muutus spontaanse kehastunud liikumise ja jäljejätmise (mark making) läbi iga inimese puhul ainulaadseks kogemuslikuks loovaks osalusreaktsiooniks. Tulemusena sündis sari vähem kui pool tundi kestvaid lühitaideetendusi, valdavalt aeglases tempos, mis võimaldas kohtumisi fotodena talletada.

Kujundaja ja fotograaf Michael Walsh, kes viibis iga taideetenduse juures, pildistas kõiki kohtumisi.

Iga etenduse järel näidati sarja valitud kaadritest kolmel väiksel digitaalsel ekraanil trepigalerii seintel.

Projekti lõpptulemusena sündis see raamat, mille kujundas Michael ning kaastoimetas Maria.
