Hello, KB! I am thrilled and excited to introduce our first issue of KB Living.

I can honestly say I have grown to know and appreciate the KB way, the people, the community and the beauty. KB is truly a special place.

After 53 years of living in New York, with our three kids - Chelsey, Courtney, and Brandon - out of the house, my wife, Debbie, and I decided it was time to move to the warm sunshine of Florida I sold my media company, which included my magazine, after 30 years, and we embarked on a brand new adventure.

I wanted to go back to my roots of knowing my neighbors, learning about their businesses, and creating a company that meant something to the people who are a part of our magazine community.

As the publisher, my goal is to celebrate all the incredible people that call KB their home. The magazine will be all about you and your

W

henever I meet someone who is new to Key Biscayne, I always like to ask, “So, what do you think?” As someone who came here just sixteen short years ago, I like to hear new perspectives on our Island Paradise. We are a very different type of community, and we are blessed to live here. Just six miles from the bustle of an international city, our island is a place apart. Coming over the Powell Bridge, I feel the calm of the island as I leave Miami for our island calm.

So, when a new neighbor moves in, I am always happy to welcome them and tell them why we are such a special place. There aren’t many communities left in the world where kids can ride their bikes to and from school, go to the local parks to play, and just be kids. But they can do that on Key Biscayne.

Living in a village that is just a mile by a mile and a half, we tend to know our neighbors. Whether it is walking on the beach, in stores and restaurants, at the dog park, or watching our kids play sports at the community center, we see each other regularly.

And that’s a good thing. We work together to build a stronger community. Participation in the village government is almost a prerequisite of living on Key Biscayne. We run our community through volunteerism and dedication. No one has a monopoly on good ideas, and no one is ever excluded from providing his or her opinion.

Because we are a barrier island, our community tends to live very close to nature. We love the outdoors, with a real emphasis on the water. Key Biscayners have a real affinity for their beaches, their boats and their boards (paddle, kite, or otherwise). Fiestas are frequent, and new faces are always welcome.

It is an honor to be Mayor for the Village of Key Biscayne, as much as it is a blessing to be able to call this island my family’s home. We welcome KB Living magazine to our little slice of paradise.

FILL A BAG IS YOUR NEXT GOOD HABIT

Join The Proud “Pickers” Of Key Biscayne When living on Key Biscayne, late afternoon beach walks are inevitable. There’s something about the island air that draws you to the beach and the ocean. Maybe it’s the drive into the island and going over the two bridges while taking in the beautiful scenery of Biscayne Bay and the Miami skyline.

Many Key residents walk the beach to relax or exercise. Lately, though, there are the “pickers,” a group of residents that walk the beach for another reason. They turn “regular beach walks into meaningful cleanups,” by picking up trash and microplastics washed up on our shoreline.

As a kid, I spent entire Saturdays and Sundays on the beach.

Mom sunbathed and caught up with friends while I played on the shoreline, either building sandcastles or digging the deepest hole I could dig. The thought I might dig up an old buried syringe or piece of jagged plastic never occurred to us.

At the time, about 20 years ago, the beach was plastic and trash free. The little trash on it was left over by visitors, and very little was washed up ashore.

Today, running into plastic and trash at the beach is truly inevitable. That’s why many of us who live here and love it have become “pickers” even though we may also visit the beach for other activities.

Local Key resident and “picker” Manny Rionda made it his mission to come up with a way to tackle this plastic problem head-on, in a way that could engage people who didn’t necessarily come to clean but might be motivated to help along their beach journey. He and his crew of trash-picking friends came up with Fill A Bag. Fill A Bag’s goal is to make it easier for anyone walking the beach to help with cleanup efforts.

Manny decided the easiest way to motivate more volunteers was to make trash receptacles accessible. He came up with the idea to set up stations that provide local beach-walkers with bags or buckets to fill up with trash. A grant from the Miami Public Space challenge helped him execute his vision.

I can say that Fill A Bag has changed my lifestyle.

There is something about walking down the beach and picking up washed-up trash and plastic that changes your mentality and your habits. It can be as simple as starting to bring your own bags to the grocery store or purchasing a reusable straw to use when drinking coffee or soda, but something clicks and you become a part of the solution rather than the problem.

She is a bright and charming tornado in a pale blue princess dress that looks like it came straight out of a Disney stylist’s collection. Emmo, her older brother, follows closely. At 12, he is a seasoned professional go-kart racer who travels and races 30 weekends out of the year. Mastering the high-speed pressure has made him very collected for his age. As their father, legendary Brazilian racing driver, Emerson Fittipaldi, graciously introduces himself to everyone on the set, his striking wife, Rossana, allows the stylist to lead her toward the wardrobe choices (There was some curiosity beforehand whether Emerson would wear his racing gear, but since he didn’t, she’s looking for possible options for him as well as herself.). As they wrap up the wardrobe selections, they each slip on the beautiful MIDO Watches presented by Doug Kaplan, Brand President - MIDO Watches at Swatch Group (US).

While the Fittipaldi’s family is a part of Key Biscayne community fabric, most people aren’t sure how they came to settle here: Our sleepy island is so different from the turbo-charged atmosphere of the racing circuit. Yet for Emerson, the moment he saw it, he knew it was his ultimate home-sweet-home.

Finding Key Biscayne In spite of Florida’s extreme appeal to all Brazilians who can travel, it took a while for Emerson to discover Key Biscayne, mainly because he didn’t have much interest in Miami.

“I didn’t care to leave the airport!” he says, comically candid about his early misgivings. “I had completely different expectations of Miami. But when I drove the Spirit down the bridge, I thought to myself: This is the place to be!”

extraordinary event that put Miami on the international racing scene. Soon after the race, he made his move. Key Biscayne became his first Miami residence and — apart from a brief stint in Miami Beach — has been his permanent one.

“I travel a lot,” he says, “I don’t know every place in the world, but I know a lot of places in the world. … and Key Biscayne is really special.”

Mr. & Mrs. Fittipaldi Off the track, Emerson Fittipaldi seems the opposite of the speed junkie one might imagine him to be. He emanates a calm courtliness. When he speaks, it’s quiet and thoughtful in tone, picking up energy and intensity when a subject engages him. It’s clear that the relaxed and friendly Key Biscayne lifestyle is exactly the right fit for him. He says he doesn’t even mind the speed limits.

Of course, by ‘Spirit’, he means the celebrated Spirit of Miami racecar, and the ‘bridge’ was the one and only Rickenbacker Causeway. The drive, as racing enthusiasts might remember, was a history-making pedal-to-the-metal roar down the Rickenbacker.

Mr. and Mrs. Fittipaldi show how finely attuned they are when asked why they chose Key Biscayne. In unrehearsed unison, they say “Paradise, safety, and family.”

It was 1984 and, after ten years and many wins, including two World Championships, Fittipaldi had left Formula 1. Still, he decided to accept Homestead-Miami Speedway founder Ralph Sanchez’s invitation and race his car in the Miami Grand Prix, the

“Now and then, we see other residents taking all of this for granted,” Emerson says, “because they don’t have any basis for comparison. We do, and we take advantage of all the island offers.”

ally breaks, we find him fishing off the dock. What’s more, he has actually caught a fish, which he wraps in plastic bags and carries victoriously out to the family golf cart.

By this, he means just about every outdoor activity and sport to be found. “Tennis, water skiing, wakeboard, kite surfing, sailing…” he lists off, while Rossana nods along.

No one asks whether he actually intends this to be dinner, but it isn’t totally out of the question: Emmo, like his parents, follows a generally macrobiotic diet. It includes lots of seafood, seaweed, and brown rice, and Rossana typically cooks everything when possible.

“He can’t beat me at tennis,” she eventually interjects. Apparently, he continues to try, in an endless ongoing friendly competition at Ocean Club, where they happily reside. They also enjoy the Ocean Club gym, starting their day at 4:30 am.

“We met at the gym.” He recalls. “I did not know, at the time, that her grandfather was a famous race car driver who used to race with Porsche, in Brazil. When I was a little boy, I shook his hand, and many years later, by coincidence, I met her. Now, Emmo has racing genes from both sides of the family.”

Emmo & Vittoria Throughout the interview, Vittoria has been in and out — observing the camera crew, sweet-talking her way into borrowing her mom’s phone, and dexterously managing to eat an entire bag of cheese puffs without smudging her pale blue dress. Emmo, on the other hand, has been invisible and silent. When the crew eventu-

If Emmo seems more adult than the typical Miami tween boy, it’s for good reason. He’s homeschooled during the week and on the road almost every weekend carrying on the family’s professional racing legacy.

Small wonder that Emerson, who travels everywhere with Emmo, gravitates toward the Key for the non-race days.

“Key Biscayne is the safest environment I can provide for my children,” he explains. “Even if it is so close to Miami, when I cross the bridge, I feel I am in Paradise, miles away from everywhere.”

The Next Act Last spring, 34 years after that fateful day when Emerson Fittipaldi brought the Spirit of Miami roaring down the Rickenbacker, he took the same car down the bridge once again, right into the November 2018 • KB Living

“I parked the car at Monaco Square, next to the City Hall.” He beams. “I think everyone liked it, even if I woke up a lot of people!”

The event was, in fact, such a success that it’s expanding in its second year. Described as a Boat Show for car collectors, it will take place from March 27-29, 2020, in Monaco Square and Village Green, in partnership with the Principality of Monaco. It will include a Concourse of Elegance and two cups, for locals and non-locals.

Fittipaldi describes it as a family event, but, of course, it’s more than that. Considering how successful his Formula 1 and NASCAR runs were, this latest foray into automotive entertainment has solid potential to become a major entry in the Miami-Dade social calendar.

Who knows, maybe in a few decades, it will be Emmo Fittipaldi driving the Spirit of Miami down the Rickenbacker Causeway to kick off the 30th annual Key Biscayne Car Week.

After meeting this family, it seems more than possible.

Motivating Minds Introduces New Entrepreneurship Program

In the inaugural issue of KB Living, we’re delighted to introduce a new curriculum designed and implemented by the learning center Motivating Minds: Presenting TOWNE! - Teach Our Worldly New Entrepreneurs, a program designed to introduce children to the myriad of skills needed to operate a business.

One of the many reasons Key Biscayne is such a wonderful place to raise children is that our educators are in tune with what students and parents need, not just from a social or recreational perspective, but also in creating a curriculum that will set students up to thrive in young adulthood and beyond.

Does anyone remember the last time you needed to diagram a sentence at the office? How about the last work meeting where you needed to dissect a frog? Probably not. Do you remember the last time you worried about taxes? Tried to plan a budget? Needed to negotiate as a buyer or a seller? Not so long ago, right?.

TOWNE encourages students to adopt a new way of learning and creative expression through executing a variety of projects that exercise entrepreneurial skills. Working closely with the center’s in-house art department, students conceptualize, execute, and market their unique ideas, focusing on projects such as establishing a township with its own currency, storefronts, and governing bodies. They’re introduced to business and finance basics including the value of money, banking systems, taxes, the law of supply and demand, and civic duty.

The latest project within the TOWNE curriculum helps students develop essential skills such as budgeting and forecasting, the art of sales and negotiation, product design and development, advertising, and fundraising: students have been designing their very own Monopoly-inspired board aimed at supporting the local businesses of Key Biscayne.

Motivating Minds is on track to have tabletop game sets available for holiday gift shopping. We think a KB board game is a great addition to any resident’s game collection and makes a special gift for the extended family and friends who love to visit. All will enjoy this colorfully illustrated, student-devised memento of the island.

Erick Fernandez On Raising Kids In The Keys

Erick Fernandez had seen a lot of Miami, but 11 years ago when he first visited Key Biscayne for business, he felt like he had discovered a special place.

The client he was visiting confirmed that, yes, it really is what it looks like.

“Driving over that bridge, with the beautiful scenic view of the water, seeing kids ride their bikes, people walking their dogs along the streets, we fell in love with it,” he says.

Like many people, the beauty and character of the village drew the Fernandezes. KB is that place that they were looking for to raise their children. The neighborly spirit and slow-paced charm of the island called to them.

And over the years, the bonds between families grow. The Fernandezes have met many close friends because their children attended the same school, and, in fact, spent their summer vacation this year vacationing in Spain and Portugal with couples they know from KB. “This is a kid-focused area. A lot of these relationships stem from parents wanting their kids to have a special place to live. We have common interests from the beginning. But we also get the benefit of these wonderful relationships we’ve cultivated.”

As a Latino married to an American, Fernandez appreciates that there are lots of people from different nationalities and cultures on the Key. Although he enjoys visiting them abroad, his favorite slice of culture is a morning ritual that takes place close to home.

“I go to Oasis Cafe a lot. They have the best Cuban coffee. The cool aspect of the Oasis is, you go there at 8:30 or 9 in the morning, and you run into what I call the United Nations. It’s a lot of longtime residents from different countries. Some are older, some younger. We catch up, we socialize, we solve the world’s problems, usually talking with each other for about 30 minutes.

We share our cafecito, a sign of admiration and quality time.

Many of the people have become what I consider good friends.”

Strong friendships are a recurring theme in this story, and in a day and age where so many people struggle with social isolation, it’s unusual and inspiring to hear about a community where people take the time to simply care about each other.

A New Chapter For The Key Biscayne Yacht Club I S L A N D L A N D M A R K W I L L S O O N C O M P L E T E R E N O VAT I O N S For nearly 65 years, the Key Biscayne Yacht Club has been a staple of the Key Biscayne community – a landmark that’s served as a backdrop for so many special memories. From weddings to birthday celebrations to family-friendly holiday parties, its clubhouse and spacious lawn fronting the harbor have hosted countless events for members and friends. Its regular social schedule of Sunday brunches, sundowner gatherings, themed parties, and wine dinners ensured that members always had something fun to look forward to.

For the many boating enthusiasts that choose Key Biscayne for its proximity to the open water, the Yacht Club is the hub of that lifestyle: a perfect host site for fishing tournaments, international sailing events, regattas, and local races.

The club has also served as a center for civic activity and youth programs. On any given day, many of the community’s service organizations might be spotted holding regular meetings and events, reflecting the club’s unwavering commitment to community involvement and volunteerism.

Meanwhile, youth-focused programs inspire kids to engage in and appreciate Key Biscayne’s active, outdoorsy lifestyle from

their formative years onward. The yacht club’s popular summer programs, which include sailing classes across levels (London Foggies, Opti Sailing, Opti Racing, Teen Sailing), kayaking, and a marine science camp, have served hundreds of children through generations. While learning and growing, children create lifelong memories and friendships — whether their parents are members or non-members.

While the renovation and expansion of the clubhouse had to happen, many Key Biscayne locals are curious about its progress and what the results will be. For all of you, we have good news: This year marks the beginning of a new era with the opening of an elevated two-story, 24,000-square-foot clubhouse. This will replace the one-story clubhouse less than half the size that was demolished earlier in the year.

For decades, the Key Biscayne Yacht Club has faithfully served generations of members, as well as the dynamic Village of Key Biscayne. Once completed, the Key Biscayne Yacht Club along with its new state-of-the-art clubhouse will be delighted to welcome back its current members. And, hopefully, looking forward to greeting new members as well. We all look forward to seeing the completed renovations.

Megan Tague grew up on Key Biscayne, so even though she is currently living the fast-paced New York City life, her wedding to fellow Miami native Paul Sanabria called for a picture-perfect return to the island.

The beachfront ceremony took place at Grand Bay Club, with 140 guests celebrating the couple’s special day. The bride’s aunt Karena Albers served as the officiant, while the mother of the bride was resplendent in Carolina Herrera. The person who had introduced Megan to Paul nearly seven years ago, Megan’s sister, Alison, was the maid of honor.

Although Alison had no inkling that her casual introduction would lead to wedding bells, she and the rest of the family liked him from the start. He had recently graduated from FIU, while Megan was getting her graduate

degree at the University of Florida. After spending a few years living in Miami, the couple moved to New York City in 2016.

They share the desire to collect experiences, not material things, balancing this with a strong work ethic and sense of purpose. Megan works as a marketing associate for pet health startup Bond Vet, while Paul works as a software engineer at the ad tech company Taboola.

Mother-of-the-bride, Mary Tague, was the first person in her family to learn that he planned to propose after the couple had been dating for just over six years.

The search for the perfect dress ended up being more of a challenge, entailing two trips to New York and two trips to Miami, where the bride and her mother methodically went through nearly every bridal boutique in both cities. The search ended with the discovery of an elegant Pronovias Atelier design, cut low in the back, and framed it with an alternative wedding veil custom-made by the family’s seamstress in Miami.

The couple shopped for an engagement ring together and shared an adorable memory that’s very much in keeping with their “experiences not things” motto.

“We were walking from one store to another in Williamsburg, and I was talking about how I just wanted a gold band because I was feeling overwhelmed by all the options,” remembers Megan. “Within seconds (literally no more than ten), Paul looked down and saw a small gold-plated ring lying on the street.

He picked it up and put it on my ring finger — it fit perfectly!”

While he ended up buying his bride a traditional diamond ring, Megan says, “I still have the first ring, and will keep it forever.”

“I was visiting New York, and he asked me for permission in only the few minutes we were alone together. The three of us were out at a lounge, and Megan stepped away, and he sprung it on me,” laughs Mary. “I had to hide the secret from my husband till Paul could ask his permission a few days later and then hide it from my daughter for a couple of weeks. I was bursting at the seams.”

Paul proposed in Mexico City, and the couple decided on a relatively short engagement, setting a date just under seven months out. Luckily, Mary was entirely up to the task of planning a Key Biscayne wedding for 140 guests on short notice. Her first call was to the Grand Bay Club.

“I’ve held several charity events there in the past. The food is great, and the management is more than accommodating. We didn’t even look anywhere else, we knew it would work so well.”

After a beach bachelor party in Barbados, a bachelorette glamping trip in the Rocky Mountains, a mixedguest-list karaoke wedding shower on a New York City rooftop, and a cocktail party in Wynwood, the big day arrived. Friends and family from near and far arrived in Key Biscayne to celebrate with the couple.

The groom shared his vows during the ceremony and there wasn’t a dry eye in the crowd: “Megan, I feel like I’m the luckiest guy alive,” he started. “When we first started dating, I told myself it was too good to be true, I was just glad I got to be with you on this ride — however long it lasted… Seven years later, I still feel like I’m dreaming ...”

The day was windier than usual, but the kite surfers that dotted the horizon served as the perfect backdrop for the beach wedding, and the Grand Bay Club was beautifully decorated for a barefoot black-tie party.

“The love and mutual admiration these two feel for each other was apparent throughout the day,” the mother of the groom, Lucero Sanabria, told us. “They danced, kissed, and embraced to the promise of being in love forever.”

The reception went off without a hitch under Grand Bay Club Manager Carmen Martin’s direction with help from Chris Roa of Rusch & Roa Events. For dinner, Grand Bay Club Chef Carlos provided a wide variety of delicious food stations, including a tenderloin carving station, a vegetarian station, an elaborate salad bar, and more. The guests enjoyed their food at tropically adorned tables designed by florist Gil Sosa while Fusion Entertainment Group provided music accompanied by a saxophone and flute. After their first dance, the couple cut their four-tier cake provided by Bunnie Cakes. The cake had three different flavors: passion fruit, guava, and Dulce de leche.

We wish the newlywed couple endless happiness and a lifetime of wonderful adventures together — but remember, you always have a place here when you want to come back home.
