10 YEARS AGO, 2010 The Key Biscayne median household income was $121,023 and had grown by 39.75% since 2000, a growth rate much higher than the state and national averages. The Key Biscayne median house value was $908,400, a 47.59% increase over the last 10 years.

20 YEARS AGO, 2000 The Village of Key Biscayne entered the new century as an increasingly diverse and vibrant community composed of different cultures, languages, and backgrounds. In 2000, the median income for a household in the village was $86,599.

30 YEARS AGO, 1990 Residents voted to incorporate Key Biscayne on November 6, 1990. The Village of Key Biscayne was officially incorporated on June 18, 1991.
50 YEARS AGO, 1970 A new era of pop culture was just beginning, but the American mindset was still focused on their memories. People flocked to movie theaters to see M*A*S*H and Patton. The Beatles disbanded, and Simon and Garfunkel won a Grammy for Song of the Year, “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” but it would be their last album together. We lost legendary talents, Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. The Apollo 13 accident shocked the nation, but on April 17, the crew of Apollo 13 had a successful splashdown in the Pacific Ocean near Samoa, with all of the crew surviving.

The last “yes” vote needed for ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment, which provided for women’s suffrage, was Tennessee. On August 18, 1920, the Tennessee House of Representatives voted in favor of the amendment by a vote of 50-49.

250 YEARS AGO, 1770 The Boston Massacre, which was eventually credited as the first battle of the American Revolution, occurred on March 5. British troops fired into a Boston mob. They were demonstrating against British troops at the customs commission. Even though the war began officially five years later, this incident further incited the colonists to rebellion.

2500 YEARS AGO, 480BC The Battle of Thermopylae ended in victory for the Persians under Xerxes. His vast army engulfed a force of 300 Spartans and 700 Thespiae under the Spartan King, Leonidas I. The Greeks under Leonidas resisted the advance for two days; he then ordered most of his troops to retreat, and he and his 300-member royal guard fought to the last man. And while it’s always interesting to remember the past and to celebrate how far we’ve come, we’d like to encourage each of you to look into this new year with great anticipation and hope. Welcome to this month’s Sponsor Spotlight where we visited with Doug Mason, general manager of Sunset Harbour Yacht Club, Miami Beach’s boutique marina. Doug feels fortunate to be the general manager of this “piece of paradise.” With a long family history of serious boating going back to his grandfather who built a 70-foot yacht to sail around the world, Doug has over 25,000 miles under his keel, himself, sailing extensively from port to port all over the world. With more than 25 years of marina and marine project management experience, he doesn’t just know the business; he has lived a serious boating lifestyle. Doug gave us an overview and a little background on the yacht club and what makes it unique. Sunset Harbour Yacht Club is strung along two acres overlooking the beautiful waters of Biscayne Bay. SHYC is South Beach’s only private, five-star yacht club, and full-service marina, featuring 125 wet slips accommodating vessels from 45 to 150-plus feet. In the 1940s, the site that is now SHYC was occupied by Purdy Boat Works owned by a Mr. Purdy and sons. It had a rail system and was considered a good yard for refitting the wooden motor vessels Trumpy Yachts. As time went on, it evolved into more of a marina when the site was purchased by a developer in the ’70-’80s. In 2002, the site was sold, renovated, and converted into an equity ownership club. SHYC is located in the center of the famous “South Beach.” With the best shops (Lincoln Rd. shopping District 4 blocks) and 4-5-star restaurants located right across the street, it’s just a couple of miles away from the Miami Beach Convention Center, and the Miami Beach Golf Course is only 1 mile away. With more than 400 fairs all over the world, we felt that joining Acton’s platform was the best option to start a fair in our wonderful community.

But that did not seem enough for them. Looking for help, they came to us who searched the internet for an answer and we stumbled upon Acton Children’s Business Fair.

We have the privilege to live in Key Biscayne, not only because of the long sandy beaches, the tropical landscape, the beautiful weather, and amazing views but because Key Biscayne has a true sense of community. The support and excitement from local government, local businesses and schools made it clear to us that not only were we helping our daughters to have a sales spot for their product, but we were contributing to all young entrepreneurs in the village.
As we started the project, our first meeting was with Male Legarre from Hermanos de la Calle, a local nonprofit, as we wanted the kids to know the importance of contributing to a bigger cause. The Hermanos de la Calle team personally distributes warm meals to the homeless in Miami with the aim to reintegrate them into society. Male was on board from day one; we agreed that all participants donate 5% of their earnings on the day of the fair, and with their support, we started to plan our local business fair. The Key Biscayne Children’s Business Fair aims to motivate young entrepreneurs ages 8 to 16 to pursue projects and understand the value of their ideas. Children create a product or service, develop a brand, design a marketing strategy, and then open for customers at this one-day marketplace. Kids are responsible for setup, sales, and interacting with the customer. It is truly a complete business hands-on experience and a great educational tool, and mainly, it is lots of fun. We truly emphasize the fun part of the fair; we want kids to be kids, to be passionate about what they create and to enjoy the experience. The application to the fair is already a learning exercise. Questions like “How do you plan to pay for your start-up costs?” and “How will you determine if your business was a success?” get the kids’ mindset in business mode and allows them to question their idea. Once the application is submitted, we ask for a video and two pictures. We want to make sure that the kids are behind each business and that we have a variety of products and services to offer at the fair. When a product repeats itself, we question the entrepreneur on how to make it different from the rest. Last year at the fair, we had three businesses doing slime. One was custom made, one was a do-it-yourself kit, and the third one had a roulette with slime promotions. January 2020 • KB Living

Once our 42 businesses were chosen, we had an amazing motivational event. We were fortunate to have as speakers Maria Lorca, founder of MLS Academic Consulting, Ramiro Almeida, co-founder of Optimus Ride, and Marigela Zamudio, founder of Padres Asertivos. Each of them gave their perspective on starting a business. Kids learned how entrepreneurs influence the economy. They were amazed by a video of self-driving cars, Parents were taught to nurture talent, and most importantly, kids heard real-life experiences from successful local entrepreneurs. The first Key Biscayne Children’s Business Fair happened in February of last year, and we are extremely proud of the results. With 42 businesses, 70 participants, more than 800 visitors and total spending of over $8000, the fair proved that our community is filled with engaged young entrepreneurs and that Key Biscayne supports youth ideas. Olivia and Mariel, our daughters, beautifully decorated their stand, interacted for three hours with different clients, had tons of fun, and made a total of $482. For next year’s fair, they want to double their sales. Although the big smiles and the amazing learning experience were the real prizes, we had recognition for a few entrepreneurs.

Vicente Alonso had the most profitable business with his artistic talent; Nicolas Vanderbrugg from The Daily Pioneer, a local newspaper made by children for children in Key Biscayne, had the most original idea; and Antonia Chamorro from Antonia’s Petit Atelier had the most creative stand. Our wonderful sponsors, who made the fair possible, gave a prize for overall business to Alessandra Peña from KB Lighthouse, hand-painted postcards of Key Biscayne’s Lighthouse. Two weeks after the fair, we had the Hermanos de la Calle event for kids to witness firsthand how their 5% donation was contributing to the less fortunate. Participants and their parents cooked at Milanezza and headed to Miami with a warm meal as an excuse to make conversation with the homeless. The evening was extremely heartwarming and a reminder of how a small contribution can go a long way. Now, as we approach the Key Biscayne Children’s Business Fair 2020 we are thrilled to re-live the adventure all over again. The support shown once more from our community is overwhelming; more than 30 sponsors make the event a reality. For this year, we are growing to 50 businesses, expanding the fair space and
bringing new motivational speakers on board. Our daughters are expanding their beauty line and thinking of new products. We are amazed at the creativity of our participants and look forward to seeing their ideas turn into action. This month we had the pleasure of sitting down with Tatyana Chiocchetti, and Christine Wing. For the few of you reading this who do not already know them, Tatyana, Executive Director and Christine, Director of Marketing and Member Services lead the team of Key Biscayne Chamber of Commerce. Most of you already know the kinetic connectors of Key Biscayne. It was delightful to visit with them about their history and connection to Key Biscayne.

where she earned a bachelor of arts in Modern Languages and Marketing. Upon her return to Miami, she met an Italian man, Emilio, who happened to be living in Key Biscayne at the time. They put down their own roots to flourish in the community she loved so much growing up. Tatyana managed contract and price negotiations with US-based channels for placement on French digital satellite and DSL pay television service owned by Canal+ Group, translated dialogue text from Italian, Spanish and French into English for film and TV series voice over artists: and was marketing and communications manager for the Miami International Film Festival for nearly a decade, before she came to Key Biscayne Chamber of Commerce 4 years ago.
Tatyana has lived off and on Key Biscayne for over 30 years. Her grandparents, James and Miriam Woodman purchased one of the original Mackle homes. As a young girl, Tatyana and her family would sail across the Bay to visit her grandparents. Her father, Jim Woodman, was a travel writer and inspired by his family’s love for the island, wrote a book, Key Biscayne The Romance of Cape Florida, recounting the island’s history from beginning until the early 1960s. Tatyana graduated from South Miami Senior High, earning a swimming scholarship, she went on to Texas A&M University
Christine, her husband, Mark Meyer and their two daughters, Alexia (12) and Nicole (10), came to Key Biscayne 4 years ago by way of Tuscany, Italy. Mark is a Yacht Broker at Allied Marine and the girls go to Key Biscayne K-8 Center. Christine loves living and working in Key Biscayne. “Being close to the girl’s school and work is very important to me,” she told us. “Key Biscayne is different in many ways from Tuscany, but the small village feel and the heart of the people is the same. We love all the nature and the emphasis on preserving the environment. We love being so close to the beaches.” Christine graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a BS in advertising. She accepted the position of Director

of Marketing and Member Services as an experienced international marketing communications professional having worked at some of the top global ad agencies throughout her career. Christine, over the last two-anda-half years has been a huge asset to the Key Biscayne community with her global perspective, international experience, and success in leading and empowering multicultural teams. Tatyana and Christine bring a wealth of experience to the business community of Key Biscayne with their global and multi-cultural business experience. Both are multi-lingual and have a passion for connecting people and business. They love what they do and it shows. While they are very serious about accomplishing the goals and initiatives of the business community of Key Biscayne, they know how to bring a fresh and fun approach to the events and programs. Both Christine and Tatyana are “foodies” and enjoy the eclectic culinary options available here on the island. This has played a big role in one of their important initiatives through the Chamber; the Key Biscayne Shop, Dine & Unwind Guide, which will be inserted in the upcoming Edible South Florida winter issue in
order to reach neighboring communities and distributed at the Culinary Pavillion of the Coconut Grove Arts Festival. Be sure to get your copy or check out the digital version available online. One of the latest Chamber-led initiatives targeting potential real estate buyers comes via a full-page ad in the Official Super Bowl LIV Guide promoting our Island Paradise. The Guide has a print run of 275,000, in addition to its digital distribution. The Village of Key Biscayne and the Chamber combined forces to capitalize on this incredible opportunity to reach visitors from all over the US coming to Miami for the Super Bowl in February 2020. Another initiative we talked about and the one that brought the most excitement to their voices was the 4th Annual Families in Paradise event coming March 15, 2020 at Village Hall. “This is the signature event of the Chamber — a fun-filled day designed to bring families together to have fun, while learning about the different businesses in our community. The 2019 edition included 32 hands-on activities, music & food. Each year sponsors, exhibitors, volunteers and attendees make this event a tremendous success. We are looking forward to another great event this year!” They work together well as a team and they enjoy the opportunities they have to interact with businesses through events and networking. They stay very busy hosting workshops, ribbon-cuttings, networking events, and award ceremonies. They’re constantly on the lookout for opportunities to encourage and highlight people’s accomplishments. One great example is their , collaboration with the Key Biscayne Community Foundation and Principals’ Coalition for the Good of the Children to present annually, the Good Neighbor & Giving Tree Awards that honors students, teachers, and principals—next one is set for April 21, 2020. You can see in their photo gallery at keybiscaynechamber. org that they love to have fun—it shows in everything they do— they love their work and they love Key Biscayne.

Living on an island paradise comes with plenty of perks. Afternoon walks on the beach, awesome bike riding, nature walks and more are part of the daily routines of many Key Biscayne residents and visitors. One of the best perks is the ability to view a magical sunset from multiple breathtaking sights near and around Key Biscayne. Key Biscayne and Virginia Key are home to some spectacular sunset viewing sites. From December through February, sunset times begin somewhere around 5:15 p.m. As the calendar moves toward springtime, the days lengthen, and a Key Biscayne sunset in April or May takes place closer to 6:30 p.m. Once you get to June and the summer solstice, the days are longer and the nights shorter, and you can watch the sun go down as late in the evening

as 8:15 p.m. After June 21, the daylight hours begin to slowly decrease, and autumn sunsets in Key Biscayne can be enjoyed anywhere from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. One of the most popular places to view the sunset has to be Virginia Key Dog Beach. You can find this beach as you exit Key Biscayne and enter to Virginia Key on your left after the Miami Seaquarium. The beach stretches almost the entire west side of Virginia Key. During the weekend, the beach becomes very crowded and difficult to find parking, as it’s one of two dog beaches in all of Miami-Dade County. The beach is also very popular for families, as the water off the beach is very shallow and ideal for kids who don’t know how to swim. During the weekdays, especially during winter when the sun sets closer to 5:15 p.m., you

can find many Key Biscayne residents coming back from work stopping to enjoy the sunset on their way home. A more secluded area to watch a beautiful sunset is just a three-minute drive from Virginia Dog beach to the Crandon Park Marina. Once entering the marina, you must drive to the northernmost part of the marina by Diver’s Paradise, and you will see an open field with a gazebo. There, you can enjoy fabulous sunsets while watching boats enter and leave the marina. A little later as the sun sets, you can see the Miami skyline light up. By far, the most popular place to watch a sunset in Key Biscayne has to be Bill Baggs State Park on the southernmost tip of Key Biscayne. Most people watch the sunset at the entrance of No
Name Harbor, which gives you an amazing view of Biscayne Bay, Stiltsville and parts of Key Biscayne as well as Miami, but with a trail that hugs the entire western coast of the park, you have plenty of areas to choose which is your favorite to watch the sunset. If you’re feeling a bit adventurous, you can take the trail that leads you to the other side of the entrance of No Name Harbor (trail begins on the northern part of Boater’s Grill Parking Lot). Another fun place to watch the sunset on the key is the yacht club. The yacht club sits on the northern part of Harbor Drive and is open to its members and their guests only. With a pool bar overlooking the marina and Biscayne Bay, the yacht club is a perfect place to have a drink and enjoy the sunset. January 2020 • KB Living
