KB: Have you always lived here in the Miami area? Tell us a little bit about your family and growing up. Armando: My parents came from Cuba in 1962, I was born in
Armando is an award-winning landscape and still life photographer. A native Floridian, he aims to share with the public through his photography the true essence and beauty of nature. Driven by his joy and freedom in making art through photography, he aims to grow as an artist by traveling the world and sharing his vision.

KB: Please share the history of your business. How did you get started and how long have you been a working photographer? Armando: I borrowed a camera about nine years ago and was
hooked! I started watching youtube videos and read everything I could about photography, I have been addicted to creating ever since. KB: What do you feel makes you unique? What sets you apart from the rest? Armando: I photograph scenes that are all around us, scenes that
we take for granted or are too busy to notice. I photograph the obvious in ways that make me smile, and hopefully you, as well. KB: Given your expertise and the nature of what you do, what advice (whether general or specific) can you offer to the residents? Armando: We live in paradise, this globe is an amazing place at
an amazing time. Take the time to not only see a sunset or a sunrise but to experience it.

KB: Tell us about the events that led up to where you are now. Armando: When I started photographing, I took a picture of the
South Beach Jetty. A friend saw it and said, “You should exhibit in an art show.” I laughed but agreed to do it. We rented a tent and borrowed art panels. My work was accepted to the “Carnaval on the Mile” show in Coral Gables. I exhibited four or five photos I had taken. Looking back now, I realize the booth looked bare! I won best of show in photography for my “South Beach Sunrise” image and sold my first piece that weekend. I am a mechanical contractor by trade and still work full time for a large local firm. My photography “hobby” has turned into not only a business but also my therapy. Because it is so important to keep our kids healthy, we, as parents, have to take the time to do it properly. I know it is not easy, I am also a working mom, but doing things right shows our kids how to be healthy and do the right things too for the future. Here’s a quick idea to make lunchtime fun at home or in the lunch box at school. French bread pizza is so easy to make. You use storebought French bread as the pizza crust. To make the French bread pizza, sliced a loaf of French bread in half, lengthwise, and then top it with pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese, and all your favorite toppings. This is something your kids can help make in the morning! Quick Pro Tip: I like to have chopped and sliced veggies and meats in the refrigerator ready for snacking or making quick meals like this. Covid-19 has changed everyone’s lives and plans. Most kids wanting to live on college campuses won’t be able to do so for the time being. They need to find a way to commute instead. Most will choose to drive to and from school and for some, this will be their first car purchase. Here are some things to think about before you purchase. Purchase price: Realistically, a budget of $20,000.00 to $40,000.00 will easily satisfy almost any taste of a young adult. Frankly, there is no need to spend any more than that. Safety: https://www.iihs.org/ratings. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is an independent, nonprofit scientific and educational organization dedicated to reducing the losses — deaths, injuries, and property damage — from motor vehicle crashes. You can look up any car on their site. There is a detailed list of how the car you are considering did in the ratings. Remember: Good is the highest rating. Reliability: https://www.consumerreports.org/cars/carresearch/. Consumer Reports gives reliability testing results on each new car. You will be surprised at how some of the established brands do.

Warranty: Most new cars today offer a full three-year, 36,000mile bumper-to-bumper warranty. Fuel Economy: Small to mid-sized four-door sedans get better fuel economy than large, V8-powered SUVs or trucks. If your young adult does a lot of driving, the fluctuation in fuel costs could be upwards of $100.00 per month. Electric cars may be a viable option only if you have access to charging the car either at home or school. Most electric cars require recharging multiple times per week, depending on the number of miles and speed driven. Comfort and Lifestyle: Does your young adult haul sporting equipment or bulky items often? Maybe they tend to drive several other people in the car. Or maybe you plan on using the car as a part-time car-pool vehicle. Then you should be mindful of these needs when looking. College Students Discount: Quite a few auto manufacturers offer students a discount on a new car. Typically, it’s up to $500.00 Make sure you ask for it.

Insurance Costs: Every car has an insurance classification. There is a huge difference in insurance costs depending on the model, home location, commute distance, and of course, their driving record. Dealer Experience: Is the dealer conveniently located/ close by? Do they take walk-in appointments? Do they offer a loaner car? Does the person plan on driving more than 15,000 miles per year? If you answer yes to these, you really need to consider buying the car instead. I was born in Bogota, Colombia. I moved to South Florida at the age of 7 with my mother and two older siblings. I grew up in Miami and graduated from Coral Gables Senior High. My mother’s work ethic and determination made a deep impression on me during this time in my life. After graduating high school, I earned an associate’s degree from MDCC and then moved to Gainesville to attend the University of Florida where I was awarded a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Education in Special Education. Upon graduation, I worked for five years as a special education teacher in a varying exceptionalities classroom and as an itinerant teacher for the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind providing early intervention instruction to

students with dual- sensory impairments. I moved back to South Florida in 2002 and started Closing the Gaps, Inc. that same year. Since returning to South Florida in 2002, I have been active in our community as a parent, resident, and business owner. In 2013, I relocated my business office from Coral Gables to Key Biscayne, and I now consider the Village my second home. Growing up in Miami, many of my childhood memories involve weekends playing in the sun at Crandon Park. Later, several of my high school friends lived on the Key so I spent many afternoons running around the Village. This was when I first realized what a unique, tightly knit community Key Biscayne truly is.

Since then, we have had the privilege of working with scores of Key Biscayne families helping their students maximize their learning outcomes and attain their goals for higher education. For nearly 20 years, our expertise in test prep and college counseling has helped our students achieve their maximum potential. Closing the Gaps Inc. was established in 2002 when Director/ CEO Edna Caceres became frustrated with the school system. Summer 2020 has been unusual, to say the least. Sleepaway camps and vacations on cruises to exotic places around the globe gave way to virtual tutoring sessions, Zoom meetings, and s’ mores by the campfire in your own backyard at best. The world as we know it has changed at unprecedented levels courtesy of COVID-19. Gone are the days of blowing candles on a cake to then share with your guests. Wearing masks are the new normal unless you want to face civil penalties and fines in some cities. Now teachers may not be able to pick up the body language of a student too shy to admit that they don’t understand the material, all thanks to our new virtual learning environment. It’s no secret parents have had to take their parenting skills to a new level integrated with a bit of psychology and a teaching degree they never even applied for. Balancing a work-at-home schedule with their children’s school curriculum is not for the faint of heart, especially those with small children. Sharing your latest proposal with your boss via Zoom while monitoring your child’s final exam begs for some good vacation time come summer. Oh, that’s right! There’s no travel this summer so now moms and dads have to run their business meetings virtually while playing the role of camp counselor as well. When did we sign up for the added responsibility of filling up water balloons while working on an Excel spreadsheet? When the pandemic hit in early spring, that’s when! Our new world is riddled with contradicting and intimidating information as modern medicine grapples with the health challenges COVID-19 has laid upon humanity on a global scale. 2020 is a presidential election year for our sweet land of liberty so there’s mudslinging from both sides of the aisle as we try to outline the ever-evolving definition of our

new normal. Our new normal may include continuing to keep students of all ages and stages home for school as the number of COVID-19 cases rise. Wait! You may be thinking, “Not only have I had to play the role of educator, principal, nurse on call, personal chef then camp counselor while I plan for my next company budget meeting. Now I am a summer camp counselor with no vacation in sight due to travel bans. And there’s talk about virtual school again in the fall?!” Before you hide under the covers and give in to the numbing effects of another Netflix binge, remember there’s always a better and more effective way to deal with our new normal, or what some might call variegated stress. That boils down to simple mindfulness practices to keep your head above water and makes you wonder why you didn’t start these easy practices sooner. Our perspective navigates our circumstances. By the same token, we have to remember that we define life. Life doesn’t define us unless we allow it to. Instead, get back into the driver seat of your life. When we employ a regular practice of mindfulness and meditation we learn to navigate the waters of life with more levity and centeredness no matter what the tides of life throw at us. The four pillars of my Empower Hour class are simple, pragmatic yet powerful. They include meditation, gratitude, affirmations, and journaling. And while there are variations of each and you may not utilize them each day, they are the founda-
tions that keep you grounded no matter where the currents of life take you. Why meditation? Because when you quiet the mind you give yourself a chance to listen to your higher wisdom.
express itself and leave us in a safe and non-confrontational way. Journaling is a great way to get down on paper any ideas or wisdom garnered during meditation. These four pillars of mindfulness complement and support one another. Especially when you incorporate them in your daily or even weekly routine.
Second, we know gratitude brings plenitude, and better yet, gratitude puts you in a better mood that attracts more of what you feel appreciation for. That’s a no-brainer there. The universe will always mirror back to you what you put out, especially in relation to your perspective.
All you have to do is practice, practice, practice for a few minutes a day and let the transformation begin. Like I always say, if you have time to stand in line at Starbucks or check your likes on social media, then you have time to set your alarm 10 to 30 minutes earlier to become a better version of yourself. Like Davidji says, practice your RPM (rise, pee, meditate) every day and let the magic unfold. So whether you will be giving your kids a geometry test while running a weekly virtual meeting with your team, or whether your little ones will be actually attending physical school in the fall or not, you’ll be prepared no matter what comes your way when you put a regular mindfulness routine in order. You become as unshakable as an impact window during a hurricane. You get wet but nothing can ever tear you down. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness is not only our constitutional right, it’s our birthright and always worth protecting. Stop waiting for the “perfect time” to begin a mindfulness and meditation practice because it doesn’t
Next, why are affirmations so important? Because the language you use toward yourself is sensitive information. Your subconscious believes what you tell yourself, like, “I’m not good enough.” We want to change the vocabulary toward something more empowering, such as, “I’m exactly where I need to be right now in my life” or “my body knows what’s best for me when I listen to it,” and so forth. Finally, journaling allows us to clean out the inner garbage that wants to
exist. Don’t give in to the world of analysis paralysis. Otherwise, you’ll be waiting forever. Start now and surrender to your imperfections. Sprinkle them with a little unconditional self-love and let the journey begin. You will never look back. By beginning now rather than “sometime,” you empower yourself, you uplift the world, and there’s no better time to do so than the present. No matter what COVID-19 has in mind, your happiness comes from within, regardless of what the evening news has to say. Your higher wisdom always knows best. Give yourself a chance and listen to it. Listening to it can be one of the most transformational decisions of your life, and perhaps more entertaining than monitoring your child’s next algebra quiz. Over the last few months, we have enjoyed the writing of Juan G. Robbin, Automotive lifestyle journalist and car collector. We want you to get to know him as your KB neighbor. Juan: I write about and review cars. I have also written about boats, motorcycles, and airplanes as I am active and have experience handling boats, riding motorcycles, and flying aircraft. KB: How long have you been an automobile enthusiast and journalist? What led you to where you are today? I am a graduate of the University of Miami in International Business Management. I run a family aerospace business that distributes aviation products worldwide. I have been an automotive journalist and collector since the early 2000s. Juan: I enjoy cars, learning about them, and sharing that knowledge with others. I look for the personality of each car I review and drive. I want to know how the car makes me feel. What is relevant and interesting about it? I convey these ideas in a non-technical, easy-to-read format that any casual reader or enthusiast will find engaging and informative. KB: What do our residents need to know about your industry or service? Juan: There are so many choices to select from, so at times, it’s tough to sift through everything available. I am able to offer timely and relevant content on products that are new, proven, or even hiding in plain sight. For instance, the article I wrote this month for the KB Living Readers, Buying Your First Back-to-School New Car. I break down the information most important to make an informed decision. Then I highlighted my top picks based on that criteria. KB: What do you think is the next big thing in the consumer automobile industry? What are we doing differently today, compared to five years ago? Juan: There have been so many technological advances and innovations in the last few years, I see the industry changing and consumers responding. For instance, electric vehicles are more accepted as they improve. We are seeing more vehicles that now come with limited autonomous driving capabilities. Overall, there
is more integrated technology and more standard safety features in every automobile from economy to luxury. I think the next big thing is the way we purchase our vehicles. People are buying more online/remotely and less via traditional channels. This has been accelerated with the recent global health crisis. We are shifting and adapting. KB: Given your business expertise and the nature of what you do, what advice can you offer to the residents? Juan: I would encourage anyone to. keep these key points in mind regarding the next car you purchase. Who will be driving it? How will it be used? What is your budget? What features do you need or want? What do you know about the brand and dealer experience? Look for the new models or interesting benefits being offered. KB: Juan, Tell us a little about your personal background and family. Where did you grow up? How long have you lived in the area? Juan: I was born in Medellin, Colombia, and grew up on Key Biscayne. I went to elementary and junior high on the Key, then high school at Gulliver Prep. I graduated from the University of Miami. I am a lifelong resident of Key Biscayne with my family. KB: What is your favorite part of living on Key Biscayne? Juan: I’ve been on KB for over 40 years. My parents picked KB for its safety, atmosphere, and quality family living. It’s a wonderful place to grow up. There is a certain laid-back easiness about living here. That hasn’t changed over the years. s long as my family and I have enjoyed visiting, and living in South Florida (especially Key Biscayne), we have always enjoyed driving down the Florida Keys. It wasn’t always a trip all the way to Key West, but even down to Key Largo was a great day out. There have always been great hotels, restaurants and things to do on the way down the great overseas highway! The drive alone is memorable, and especially in the lower keys, when you go over the “Seven Mile Bridge,” https://en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/Seven_Mile_Bridge, with spectacular views on either side. It’s best to plan your trip in advance due to traffic. Allow plenty of time if you are driving all the way to Key West. I don’t recommend doing it all in one day. The drive one way can easily be four hours. Coming out of the Keys on a Sunday afternoon can be particularly busy. I suggest getting an early start! You could make a short flight from Miami to Key West. But, you miss out on the incredible scenery of driving down through the many islands that make up the Florida Keys. A great website we use to plan trips is www.floridakeys.com. This site categorizes the Keys into different areas as you drive further south. From the most northern being Key Largo, all the way down to Key West. Each area offers various attractions, and each is famous for something different. The website also categorizes the islands as it by accommodations to make searches easier.

The Florida Keys are very relaxed. You will be overdressed wearing more than shorts, a T-shirt and flip flops in many shops and restaurants. The hotels, motels and B&Bs on each side of the US 1 highway are also very relaxed. But often busy and especially in high season. What used to be a “sleepy” part of Florida is now one of the more expensive places to live and more popular places to visit. There are upscale restaurants and even a few fine dining places, but even those are typically more relaxed than usual. Throughout the Keys, you can be sure of delicious drinks, beautiful views, and incredible seafood, especially shrimp and crab dishes. The people are incredibly friendly, and after a few days, you will feel very much at home. You will love the food and the people. After a few days, you will be like me with a favorite place for shrimp, spicy crab tacos, and Florida’s famous Key Lime Pie! The Florida Keys are easy to reach from the Miami area. You drive South out of Miami on US 1 towards Kendall, then take the 878 Snapper Creek Expressway to the Turnpike. (Alternately you can take the Turnpike south out of west Miami.) Then it is straight South on the Turnpike until the freeway ends at the small town of Florida City. At that point, you re-join US 1 again and continue south. When you pass the “Last Chance Saloon” on your right side, you are about to embark along the overseas highway toward Key Largo. At this point of the road becomes smaller, and you are in a remote area of wetlands just north of the Keys. You will pass “Jew Fish Creek” and come down the bridge into Northern Key Largo. Once on Key Largo, and at the northern end of the island is the charter boat company, “Nautical Quest Adventures,” which we highly recommend as the best day out for a charter excursion. http://www.nauticalquestadventures.com Captain Spurgeon is an incredible host aboard his Cobia fishing boat. If you plan to fish, he is happy to take you. What we appreciated about him was his “it’s your day, your way” attitude so you could do exactly as you like while on the water. He will take you fishing, or snorkeling (highly recommend Carysfort Reef Light). You can paddleboard, or relax on a sandbar and enjoy the sun. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carysfort_Reef_Light He also cooks up the most amazing hot dogs! The day we went, we also went to “Dry Rocks” and enjoyed snorkeling over the famous “Christ of the Abyss” statue, on the reef, which is about 25 feet of water. Driving south through the island, you will pass John Pennekamp State Park, https://www.pennekamppark.com. The park covers over 70 nautical miles of reefs, and in 1963 became the first underwater theme park in the United States. It was named after a local Miami newspaper editor by the name of John D. Pennekamp. He contributed to the creation of Everglades National Park, and later the preservation of the park that bears his name.

Pennekamp State Park allows an opportunity to get out on the water to either dive or snorkel, kayak or paddleboard. You can even go out a “glass bottom” boat to look at the reefs and the fish without even getting wet! The reefs off the coast of Key Largo are some of the best in the Keys for snorkeling, and they too can take you to “Dry Rocks” to snorkel above the “Christ of the Abyss” statue, which is also close to Carysfort Reef Light, just off the northern tip of Key Largo. Also on Key Largo is the main Visitor’s Center for the Florida Keys, which is worth a stop! https://fkvcowners.wixsite.com/ flkvisitorcenter They have information on literally everything you will enjoy in the keys and in Key West as well. Driving South you will pass many great restaurants, and it’s important to have breakfast to enjoy breakfast at “Harriett’s” in Tavernier. It’s a tiny place but you can’t miss it as it has always been painted a bright yellow. It’s a great place to enjoy a cooked breakfast (and the best sausages in the Keys). It’s tiny, though, and very much a local’s hang out, so better get there early: https://www.harriettesrestaurant.com/. Friendly people and great food, and the best reviews on their website! There are many hotels my wife and I like to recommend from “Playa Largo,” a Marriott property (Autograph Collection) and rated the best hotel in Key Largo https://www.playalargoresort.com on the Bayside, or “Baker’s Bay” resort, also on the bay, https:// www.bakerscay.com, which does have a completely secluded beach for the resort, with its own Tiki Bar on the sand. On the ocean side, we have enjoyed so many but really liked “The Postcard Inn,” www.holidayisle.com, (recently renovated) and Pelican Cove. www.Pelicancovehotel.com. Jenn and I spent several nights at “Pelican Cove” and being next door to what was once Holiday Isle (now the “Postcard Hotel”); they have a lot of offers such as boat rentals and jet skis, and charter fishing boats. They also have their own pool and some basic but comfortable rooms and small suites. That entire area was once the home of the original (and famous) “Tiki Bar.” They have done a great job with the renovation, and now have a new restaurant overlooking the water, and a bar as well. They have a large marina, and charter fishing boats, that overlook the famous “Whale Harbor Channel.” As you drive south over this bridge and look out towards your left, often on weekends and especially at low tide, you will see literally hundreds of boats, all anchored on the sandbar and people enjoying the shallow waters. It is widely rumored that Jimmy Buffet has flown there and landed his seaplane on the sandbar, just to play his guitar and sing songs to the crowds. Many consider this the biggest party each weekend in the Florida Keys.

Another favorite place to stay is “Kona Kai,” a collection of small cottages on the bayside with free tennis and paddleboarding. https://www.konakairesort.com/ We have had some incredible stays there, and really enjoyed many sunsets sitting on their docks. Also playing tennis there, and enjoying their super pool, and hot tub! Walking distance and right across the street is “Ballyhoos.” https://www. ballyhoosrestaurant.com/, for some amazing fish dishes! Driving down through the many Keys, you get to see a variety of options for accommodations, as well as restaurants. Most of The Florida Keys are less than a mile wide, and although wider in parts, you do get to see a lot of water on either side of the road as your drive.
