Unmasking Family Ties
kay admit it: If we asked, “What are your takeaways from the year 2020?” how inclined are you to say, ”Not a thing!” (Show of hands if you modified ‘thing’ with something akin to “blankety-blank.” ) Like it or not, the events of 2020 leave many things to take away — warnings and good memories. It is the memories that bring merriness in Michael’s first non-performing Christmas season in 30 years. The foremost lesson is this: stay close to friends and family. Not just close. In touch. The suddenness with which people fell ill or passed away has touched each of us. At the same time, we — our family — is touched by how many friends and kinfolk we reconnected with this year because of pandemic-related events. These connections gave us comfort and joy while storms swirled around us: unemployment, “unschooling,” recovering from the virus, sweating through the election (and its aftermath), surviving Zoom fatigue.

We have celebrated weddings, graduations, reunions, birthdays. We have lost weight, exercised, decluttered, remodeled, defunked dog poop and cat urine. We have received grace from creditors, food depositories, employers. We have seen our children grow while moving ourselves into a new phase of parenting we call “Adultinghood.”

even to the extent of Internet stalking. We’ve been reminded of human fragility as friends and kin have succumbed, wrestled with disease, or lost grasp of once-vivid memories. Holding memories is why we share these visuals. It’s why we say the one takeaway is this paraphrase of a phone commercial of yore: “Zoom is the next best thing to being there.” Keep in touch.
