The Old Scholars Committee regrets that these events cannot go ahead in these uncertain times. As soon as the world comes back to ‘normal’, we will set dates for the above functions.

HELP! Our long term Treasurer, JOHN TRETOLA, has been transferred to Sydney with his work. We thank John for his dedication and efforts.

His work was very much appreciated and we shall miss him.

BUT NOW WE NEED A NEW TREASURER Do you know of someone or would you be prepared to assist the Committee? It is not a difficult job, just 11 meetings a year of approximately one hours duration and you will be associated with a great team of Old Scholars.

We also need someone on the Committee who is computer literate.

That person could also be the Treasurer.

Please consider assisting us and contributing back to the School.

The Adelaide High Vitae Medal The Vitae Medal • Acknowledges Old Scholars who have sustained the School’s motto and values through their post-school achievements • Encourages greater association by Old Scholars in the life, values and vision of the School • Identifies Old Scholars who are exemplars for current students.

• The school Leadership Team award the Medal on behalf of the school.

Criteria The recipient of the Award will be assessed on the: • Recipient’s contribution to his / her nominated field of endeavour • Extent to which the recipient’s contribution has benefited the community in the nominated field of endeavour • Benefit derived by Adelaide High School through the recipient’s contribution to the life and future of the School. she gained a Bachelor of Health Science, Bachelor of Arts, Graduate Diploma of Teaching and also continued studying Latin, French and Ancient Greek.

She was appointed an SSO at Adelaide High School in 1996, where she put in countless hours helping teachers with lesson planning and presentations. She was convinced by staff at the school to go back to University to study for her Teaching Degree, which she obtained. Her first posting was as a Contract Teacher at Salisbury High for three years, then as a Contract Teacher at Adelaide High from January 2008 and was permanently appointed to Adelaide High School in 2010.

Amy supervised Volleyball, Netball and Cricket sports teams, participated in many MacRob exchanges, helped with Outdoor Education camps and excursions, was involved with scoring and statistics for Cricket at the school, including the Five Highs Cricket Carnivals. She also played District Cricket for a number of years. The list goes on – what a busy and dedicated person!

This year’s recipient is AMY WORSWICK who attended Adelaide High School as a Special Language student from 1985 – 1989, studying French and Latin.

Amy was a member of the Interact Club in Years 11 and 12 and held the position of Secretary in Year 12.

Amy worked in the Bookroom/Library during school holidays and continued this whilst at University, where, over the years,

Amy set up and still runs a successful after hours Maths Club at the school, helping students with their Maths problems and supervising their Maths homework. She is invaluable in her assistance at the Annual Conversazione with her research, PowerPoint presentations, MC duties and hall set up. She has also been on the Old Scholars Committee and has a keen interest in History and Geology.

Amy is always one of the first to willingly volunteer for anything that needs to be done.

Over the years Amy has given countless voluntary hours to support the school and students and is a truly worthy recipient of the Vitae Medal.

Just a Coincidence?

No! Adelaide High students do all sorts of amazing things.

JACK CONDOUS and GARY SCHULZ were students at the school from 1953 – 1956 and were in the same class for 4 years.

In 2017 Jack received the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for Service to the Visual Arts and to Education. In 2020 Gary also received an OAM for Service to Education, and to the community.

In the News GREIG PICKHAVER, (ABHS 1962 – 65), formerly known for his part in Roy and HG doing commentaries at the Olympics, has recently been the host of the Secrets of Our Cities on SBS, featuring the Gold Coast, Footscray and Kalgoorlie.

It was very interesting and well researched. oOo Last year Adelaide High School was the location of Sophie Hyde’s ground breaking four part SBS series, The Hunting, dealing with the controversial topic of teenage sexting. Very thought provoking! oOo

An interesting article in the Monday “Boomer” section of the Advertiser; a photo of an unknown girl being greeted at the Adelaide High School Debutante Ball held at the Palais Royal Ballroom on North Terrace in 1955. Note the long white gloves, fur jacket and posy (see photo on Page 5).

SIA FURLER, (AHS 1988 – 92) has

been honoured with a laneway named after her and a huge mural painted to commemorate her contribution to music. Sia Furler Lane is close to where she performed with acid jazz band, Crisp, at the now demolished Cargo Club in Hindley Street. When Sia moved from Adelaide to New York, she found world-wide fame as a singer and songwriter for the likes of Beyonce, Rhianna, Kelly Clarkson and Shakira. Some of her hit songs are Chandelier, Breathe Me, Clap Your Hands, Diamonds, Invincible and Chasing Shadows.

Congratulations Love at the ‘G’ ELENI GLOUFTSIS (AHS 1992 - 1996), AFL’S first female field umpire had a surprise after the final siren of the Adelaide –Carlton match when her co-umpire, Dillon Tee, her partner of 10 years, got down on one knee in the centre square and proposed. It was the first time they had umpired together. They both hail from Adelaide and have been umpiring for quite some time. Eleni teaches at a private school in Melbourne, as well as umpiring – a busy life.

CAMERON VALENTE (AHS 2010 – 2014), who enrolled at Adelaide High School in the

Special Cricket program, has won this year’s Bradman Medal which recognises South Australian Cricket Association (SACA) Premier Cricket’s best men’s player. Cam also won the Fred Godson Medal as the one-day player of the season.

Cam, Adelaide Captain, a contracted Redback and Strikers player, enjoyed a standout first-grade campaign, making 561 runs at a stunning average of 112.20, having been not out seven times.

MAEVE PLOUFFE (AHS 2015 - 2017) is going to the Tokyo Olympics (when they are held!) as a member of the Australian Olympic Cycling Team.

Following her appointment, Maeve wrote ‘I cannot believe I am even writing this.

I’M GOING TO THE OLYMPICS! This one’s for my younger self — the little girl who dreamt of one day representing Australia at the Olympic Games, and would stop at nothing to see that goal through. I remember being eight years old, sneaking out of bed in the middle of the night to watch the Beijing 2008 games, in awe as my idols competed for gold.

‘I always had my sights set on Tokyo as my first Olympics. To be twenty and find out that you’ve reached that goal... well, it brought a tear to my eye. To everyone who has supported me on this crazy journey so far — thank you. The hard work has just begun... bring on the #RoadToTokyo!’’

Congratulations Maeve. We can’t wait to cheer you on - even if we have to wait 12 months.

We are so proud SAMANTHA TIMCKE (2019 graduate), pictured (centre) with two other AHS music students, wrote and performed the song ‘Paper People’, which made her the overall winner of the Australian Children’s Music Foundation’s National Song Writing Competition. She was also the winner of the Year 11 - 12 category of the competition for the second year running, a feat never achieved before. The competition had 1200 entries. Samantha intends to spend her combined $7,500 prize, which has to be spent on musical equipment, on a new ukulele and perhaps a guitar. She hopes to become a music teacher.

Good luck with your endeavours Sam; you have made the school proud.

Old Scholars Over 65’s Lunch A small group of senior Old Scholars met over an enjoyable lunch in September 2019. This lunch was held following requests from some senior Old Scholars for a quieter and more intimate gathering, separate from (but not intended to compete with) the Annual Dinner.

Following the lunch, those present voted to hold a similar lunch in September 2020. Unfortunately, this will not be possible given the requirement of social distancing in the Covid-19 pandemic. Depending on how successful the measures are in “flattening the curve”, it might be possible to hold a lunch later this year or early next year.

Further information will be posted in this Newsletter as and when circumstances change.
