USF World is proud to celebrate over a decade of global success at the University of South Florida. Over the past twelve years we have earned national recognition for the high caliber of our global learning, research, and engagement activities, and for our deep commitment to access and equity for students and faculty seeking high impact global experiences.
The Global Excellence Awards honor the remarkable work of our faculty, staff, students, administrators, and community members whose contributions have advanced our global footprint and reputation. We are also delighted to recognize the contributions of our Fulbright scholars including our faculty who have earned Fulbright awards and traveled abroad for research and teaching as well as our inbound Fulbright students and scholars who enrich our campuses with their diverse cultures and perspectives. As we look to the future, the university’s dedication to global outreach and engagement remains a signature commitment. USF’s 2022-27 strategic plan includes a deep commitment to intercultural awareness, global literacy, and research activities that contribute to the betterment of society. USF values pervasive and sustainable globalization that prioritizes globally informed knowledge generation, innovation through discovery, mutually beneficial international partnerships, inbound and outbound student and faculty global mobility, and events and programs that bridge geographical, cultural, and political boundaries.
In recognition of the transformational impact of study abroad on the lives of students and the generous support from the Genshaft-Greenbaum Family for the Passport Scholars endowed fund, USF World is launching a year-long campaign to raise funds to support students seeking international experiences. Studying abroad has a positive impact on the development of a range of skills needed to thrive in today’s interconnected world. A gift in support of study abroad gives students the opportunity to broaden their horizons while enhancing their academic and career success. Scholarship funds provide access to a diverse array of research and education abroad opportunities, including semester exchanges, faculty-led programs, summer and short-term experiences, international internships, and service-learning opportunities. In the past 11 years, the Genshaft-Greenbaum Passport Scholarship fund has awarded more $508,950 to students and supported 208 students studying abroad.
Thank you for supporting global awareness and engagement at USF.

University of South Florida
As the university’s sixth president, Judy Genshaft served USF for 19 years, from 2000 to 2019. During her tenure, the University of South Florida emerged as a national leader for its achievements regarding student success, research and knowledge generation, and community engagement. In 2018, USF achieved the designation of a preeminent research university in the State of Florida and is currently the fastest-rising public university in the nation. Her vision for USF World and her commitment to its success resulted in the highest level of recognition in 2019 from the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) for the university’s demonstrated commitment to global learning, research, and engagement.
USF World is a product of Dr. Genshaft’s commitment to global excellence. She characterized USF as a “global research university dedicated to student and faculty success.” Under her leadership, the university elevated the importance of global connectedness in global learning, international research collaboration, and international partnerships. Launched in 2010, USF World signaled the importance of creating a global community at USF. For over a decade, Dr. Genshaft worked with stakeholders across the university community and beyond to build solid and enduring relationships with institutions worldwide that continue to provide opportunities for student learning and faculty development today. She encouraged the growth of international student enrollment, expanded the university’s global partnership portfolio, invested in the success of faculty participation in the Fulbright Program, and led the university’s investment in global learning on campus through the Global Citizens Project. Above all, she championed the benefits of studying abroad. Dr. Genshaft truly understands the transformative impact international experiences have on the lives of our students. Under her leadership, every student admitted to USF received a passport application alongside their letter of admission to the university. Her dream is for every student at USF to engage in global learning – on campus and abroad.
To enhance access to study abroad experiences, in 2011, Dr. Genshaft and her husband, Steve Greenbaum, created an endowment of one million dollars to establish the Genshaft-Greenbaum Passport Scholarship. The fund provides financial support for first-time study-abroad students at USF. When asked about the motivation for establishing the scholarship, Genshaft shared, “We believe in education, and we know that international travel expands student learning and changes lives for the better.” With heartfelt gratitude, Dr. Genshaft is honored today with the USF World Lifetime Legacy Award for her vision and tireless commitment to establishing the University of South Florida as a world-class institution of higher learning.

2013 Senator Paul Simon Award for Campus Internationalization
Studying abroad has a positive impact on the development of a range of skills needed to thrive in today’s interconnected world. Most notably, the ability to understand differences between cultures and individuals is a skill that contributes to student success on campus and after graduation. Within the context of today’s global economy, most students will move into jobs where they work for or do business with international companies, working alongside diverse colleagues. Regardless of whether it is a shortterm experience over a week or a semester experience, the benefits are clear: study abroad contributes to improvement in communication skills, confidence building, self-awareness and problem-solving. We are extremely proud of our track record in supporting access and diversity among our study abroad student population. Please consider making a difference in the life of a USF student by supporting one of our study abroad scholarship funds.
I plan to pursue a career as a nurse practitioner in family health. One of the biggest skills you need as a healthcare professional is cultural competency and one of the best ways to enhance cultural competency is to study abroad. I spent a summer session in Florence, and it was a life-changing experience.
I spent five months studying at Kansai Gaidai University while living with a host Japanese family. The experience allowed me to improve my language skills and taught me more about Japanese culture than I would have learned in a traditional classroom. As a microbiology major, my goal is to live and work in Japan after graduation from USF. Mastering the language allowed me to pursue my dream career.
