Michaela was born and raised in Napa Valley California.

During her time serving her country she lived on the Island of Oahu, HI and in Yokosuka Japan, and was able to experience many different cultures. Michaela has a love for traveling, sketching, sports, and cooking. Her diverse interest in the finer things of life has provided her with a keen eye for high-end design.

Michaela has had a knack for design since she can remember. From sewing doll clothes to designing interiors for friends and family members. She specializes in creating process books, interior envelopes, and personalized concept statements that directly relate to mod-ern con-temporary and modern farmhouse style design. Michaela has made a name for herself through her 3D digital model renderings.

With sufficient knowledge in sustainable design, technology, and computer programs Michaela never gets complacent and is always willing to adapt and grow.

STUDIO 3 // IAD 340 AUDI SPONSORED COLLABORATION ARCHITECTURE & MOBILITY SPRING 2020 About: Studio 3 at AAU is a collaborative class involving multiple departments. Auto Design, Graphic Design, Web UX Design, Fashion Design, Furniture Design, and of course Interior Architecture & Design.

Each group varied in members ranging from 5-12 people and were challenged to create the team’s identity as well as fulfilling the design aspirations for Audi in the year 2045.

Designing for the future: The goal of this project was to connect two of the most necessary aspects of a person’s life, our transportation and our homes. Architecture and mobility connecting to prepare for efficient luxury lifestyle.

Working with Audi: Audi design team had requested we abort the common futuristic ideas of flying cars and public transportation pods. Instead, we were to focus on a unique way to tie together the two main aspects and develop our concept that could change the way architects and auto designers design in the future. No pressure, right? Aside from this being one of the most challenging projects, it was absolutely my favorite project I have ever had the opportunity to be a part of. PROJECT DESCRIPTION Taking the client’s vision of butterflies visiting the site as inspiration, the architects divided the house into three smaller pavilions, which land lightly on the site and are capped by expressive roofs. Each pavilion has a separate function: the central pavilion houses the main living, dining, and cooking spaces, while two other pavilions provide for sleeping, bathing, and relaxing. The structures are modest in square footage, yet each expands into outdoor rooms that open to dramatic views of the canyon below and distant hills. Beyond poetic gestures, the butterfly roofs bring in views of the surrounding hills, the internal living spaces contribute to the landscape, and harvest rainwater. Water is celebrated throughout the design. Each roof funnels water onto to a rain chain fountain and into landscape collection pools, which then gathers into cisterns where it is stored and used to irrigate the landscape. In addition, the pavilions were sited to allow water to flow under the office bridge and for storm water to seep slowly into the ground in the main courtyard.

site analysis This location has low scores when considering walking distance, public transit, and bike paths. However, the choice of this location is based off its potential for the year 2045, not the current standards. Experts predict by the 5th decade of the 21st century Yerba Buena Island will be developed on high sustainable standards. The project is to choose a location that can be developed around the core concept.

Creating the Architecture for Audi in year 2045 I felt that going with a timeless style of Midcentury Modern would translate well to incorporate minimalism and technology. A large open concept floor plan that provides each space with a view. This open concept accommodates a “garage” to hold a fully electric automobile. This space is also equipped with a automobile charging pad along with a virtual control station. Having the home office adjacent to this felt at least necessary. The seamless connection to the back patio and pool offers the option to rest the car outside. Since the car allows for exterior seating this parking space will double for outdoor seating and even entertainment.

he Box House will be built on a portion of Yerba Buena island that consists of rocky terrain. The structure will suspend from a cliff. When in the master bedroom, one will get the sense of floating. A floor to ceiling smart glass curtain wall will allow for traditional Bay Area views.

reated using Autodesk Revit, the interior and exterior sketches provide an informal look at how the concept is developing. The digital painting, using Adobe Photoshop, displays an early rendition of the color palette and overall aesthetic this project is building up to become.

Conceptually expressing timeless style with futuristic qualities by bringing midcentury modern into a new dimension. Whilst the architectural style remains the functionality shifts to deeply consider the connection of mobility and architecture. Using the home office as the centric point of the interior and the connecting point of mobility.

MINIMALISTIC

APPROACH

The influx of biophilic design and sustainable architecture are major considerations for this futuristic concept. With both courage and empathy, the concept incorporates sustainable materials into the structure through bold timeless style. Maximum glazing, sharp edges, and clean lines combine both minimalism and midcentury modern style. A simplistic layout and open concept seamlessly merge public and personal corridors. The home office is no longer tucked away, it will be the center piece that seamlessly connects the vehicle to the home through both technology and lifestyle. The minimal barrier between the interior and exterior allots for California lifestyle to be enjoyed through both the vehicle and the home, a new dimension.

Focusing on meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generation to meet their needs. The concept of sustainability is composed of three pillars: economic, environmental and social -also known informally as people, profit, plants.

I N T E R N AT I O N A L D E S I G N Experience: Having lived in Japan for 2 years, I was able to put my own personal experiences into this project. To I say I loved living in Japan would be an understatement. From the safe and clean, compact cities, to the beautiful historical towns up north. Japan will always have a place in my heart. The common individual in Japan is often friendly, helpful, and extremely passionate of their craft.

These characteristics were the roots of this project and were considered throughout the entire design process.

Culture: The Japanese culture is something I feel to be shy of progressive. It remains very traditional, and it is happily expressed throughout most aspects of Japanese society. Food, beverages, music, work, traditions, and customs are things Japanese people hold dearly. I chose the town of Megumi because it represents all those things. While it is a district of Tokyo, it’s a much quieter, and less busy area. I felt this was the perfect place for a senior living center in Japan.

While transitioning to a new chapter this space will invoke a sense of excitement and motivation which will invite a sense of purpose. A chapter of elegance, protection, and care will provide a prideful feminine feeling that induces both luxury and warmth.

The balance of health productivity, and relaxation will create a harmonious relation of serenity.

RESIDENTIAL DESIGN For this project I wanted to step outside of my comfort zone. Having a bit of experience in residential design, I felt it was important to take the opportunity and get off the beating path. The popular design choice I am typically tasked with in residential design are typically Napa Valley Wine Country, and Modern Farmhouse. For this mood board I began with the time era that the structure was built; the 1940’s. I wanted to give it a modern twist, a concept that could bring empowerment, and provide a sense of pride through a rich and lustful finishes.

Throughout the design process I enjoyed centering in on a custom-made concept and bringing it together through the selection of finishes. My favorite part of this design process was the challenge of sourcing pieces that balanced both an antique look but also appealed to the modern aesthetic of today.

Moxie is a slang term dated back into the 1940’s to describe a person who is clever, confident, and empowering. The mood brings about a feeling of excitement, buoyance, and elegance. Using the time era as an undertone will allow the presence of relic while balancing a slight modern impression.

Within this concept the viewer should feel a sense of attraction and additivity in this multigenerational setting.

n at i o n a l g e o g r a p h i c Design Narrative CONCEPT: When entering this space, organic surfaces will work together with constructed materials to create the sense of a purposeful existence between the modern natural world. Biophilic influences will uphold a close to nature feeling. Eccentric energies will flow seamlessly between the exterior surroundings and the interior of the National Geographic Society. Inclusive design that celebrates the diverse discoveries of National Geographic.

Combining the global visionaries of the world and localities of San Francisco. Together creating a harmonious marriage of both natural and eclectic.

FLOOR ONE: This layout is designed to embrace the traffic while encouraging visitors to explore the offerings of the interior. The circulation allows for a complete 360 experience. An easy natural walk through the interior without barriers. But first coffee! Entering the lobby, the smell of coffee will greet you, from the right of the building. Visitors will be pleasantly surprised to find much more than coffee due to its full functioning kitchen tucked away in the café. Neighboring the cafe is a National Geographic retail store. Maximum glazing, one would be happy to grab a souvenir while touring the space.

Centralized ADA compliant restrooms will have two access points to accommodate all spaces. Touchless electric pocket doors will allow quick and sanitary access for everyone. The invitation to explore the exhibit will be displayed on the front and centered biophilic coat closet. Little hints and subtle invitations will point the visitors to complete the full roundabout.

To the left of the entrance, is the reception and lobby area open to a great view of the exhibit. Inviting and comfortable this area will be enjoyed by visitors anticipating important meetings, and travelers from all over.

FOCUS AREA: COAT CLOSET This biophilic design represents a connection between nature and technology and will be the first thing incomers see upon entering the building. A large, transparent OLED screen lives within the National Geographic 3D Logo. The screen provides a live feed of graphics and information for both visitors and staff. A stone, moss covered wall lies behind to act as a high contrast background. Encouraging the continuation of man’s relationship with nature. The green garden is filled with low maintenance foliage, which continues to the other side, acting as a double feature.

This biophilic design represents the contribution man can offer to the natural world. A large innovative closet design based off a traditional necessity for storing raincoats and umbrellas. The green garden from the opposite side will be able to receive the drippings from the wet protective gear. Instead of water falling onto a surface that requires cleaning, the soil filled foliage garden will absorb the droplets and feed the plants! A stone, moss covered sliding door allows for easy access to either side of the closet. This design also accommodates ADA requirements.

FOCUS AREA LOBBY: In the lobby and throughout the entire first floor, will be white stained and polished concrete flooring. This expresses a great deal of climate sympathy while it absorbs climates, assisting in reserving temperatures, and requiring minimal upkeep. A large, reclaimed tree trunk encased in a glass box is a direct representation of the connection between man and nature. Featured on the wall behind the reception is a large stone map with LED map tacks point out where current exhibits are located all over the world! Minimalistic furniture choices contrast the large, reclaimed wood coffee table slab.

Displayed on the wall are famous photos taken by some of National geographic photographers. These picture frames double as TV’s and can change displays by the control of the receptionist.

FOCUS AREA CAFE: The cafe, located to the immediate right of the entrance, will follow the biophilic features of the display. Working hand and hand to invite patrons to enjoy parts of our outside world indoors. Sustainable materials are used to work in a touch of nature. Utilizing storage under the seating minimizes waisted space. Lightweight tables, and seating accessories allow for quick and easy customizable seating arrangements. This area is designed to accommodate the individual and large groups.

Bamboo dowels will be installed in a linear pattern along the walls that host the built-in café seating. Terrazzo concrete, containing recycled materials, make up the entire built-in seating. Long strands of living ivy will be incorporated along the cables the stem from the dividers to the ceiling. This ivy will be accompanied by plenty of natural light and will be a great source of clean air exchange and a privacy divider for the coffee drinking customers.

FLOOR TWO: This layout is designed to embrace and assist the occupants with ease in their workplace. The circulation allows for a complete 360, allowing easy access in attending each anticipated workplace. With a large open lobby, neighboring the reception desk, one will walk into an airy entrance with a positive greeting. The large conference room with curtain walls will have the technology to turn on or off obscurity for privacy.

A large eat-in kitchen and break room will be a comfortable relaxing space for employees reheating their lunch, reading, or enjoying conversation during their break.

Centralized ADA compliant restrooms will have two access points to accommodate both sides of offices/workspaces. Touchless electric pocket doors will allow quick and sanitary access for everyone. Multiple types of plants offer air filtration planted in wood planter boxes. White Forest Oak (wood look) Cork, a sustainable flooring option that is comfortable to walk on, naturally anti-microbial, and holds temperature like concrete flooring. Featured in the conference room is a Mineral Fiber acoustical tile ceiling made from 71% recycled materials and has a VOC emission. This circulatory layout will influence efficiency and harmony amongst each staff member utilizing the space.

FOCUS AREA: WORKSTATION: Located on the second floor, this large open-concept office space that offers many amenities. While an open concept doesn’t typically offer much privacy, the option of an enclosed soundproof booth has been integrated to provide a quiet space for important phone calls. Adjacent to the large, glazed conference room; a divider filled with small office supplies and plants offer a semi-hollow visual division.

A small corner of built-in bench seating provides both storage and a comfortable seating area. Large wooden planter boxes are filled with more of that outside world goodness to politely encourage good vibes and clean air.

FOCUS AREA: CREATIVE ROOM Just down the hall is an open room titled “Creative Room” a space dedicated to creativity with a sole purpose of inspiring new ideas. The room will be lined will open shelving, displaying random objects from all over the world.

Photographs, drawing boards, and many other crafty supplies will be available for anyone to use. This room will be there for each employee to fully indulge in the creative process!
