Located in Saint Paul de Vence, France, La Belle Lavande Day Spa is intended to be an environment of healing and reinvigoration for people suffering with Multiple Sclerosis. The inspiration of the design is pulled from Provence Lavender, a French herb that is produced for its floral aroma that is both sweet and calming. Provence Lavender is not only known for its fragrance, but also for its medicinal properties that are beneficial to people seeking healing and relief at this holistic day spa. Along the hills in France, Provence Lavender is cultivated in a linear fashion and grows with buds and blossoms diverging from each stem. The sequence of the growth is reflected within the spatial planning of the spa, with a central path providing direction for the users as they branch off into different amenities. Natural materials and accents of dusty purple will surround patients as they progress throughout the environment to encourage relaxation and offer comfort during their time at La Belle Lavande.
PARTI DIAGRAM Looking deeper into the growth patterns of Provence Lavender, it is evident that while the stem of the herb is linear, the buds extending from it are angled and create a strong pattern of repetition. Pulling inspiration from this growth pattern, the Parti illustrates a clear primary path, with secondary paths extending from it. This diagram serves as the direction for the decisions made throughout the design and is reflected throughout the plan.

CUSTOM-BUILT CONSOLE A custom-built console table is provided in both massage rooms to ensure compact storage for items the massage therapist may need, such as fresh towels, lotions, and oils. Beneath the console are spaces for hampers to collect used linens. The structure of the table is inspired by the growth patterns of Provence Lavender, as referred to in the Parti. It is made from locally sourced limestone.

“A Thinning” by Hervé Lenouvel is locally sourced from La Galerie d’Art Hesbé-Bolzonello in the town of Saint Paul de Vence. Within the Private Residence, the contemporary French painting is hung by the main entrance to provide a sense of belonging for both residents and guests. CONVERSATION AREA ELEVATION NTS
NOTE: The kitchen is
universally designed to ensure accessibility for all user groups. In addition to generous space, openings for wheelchair access are provided beneath the sink and stove. To limit the use of opening and closing cabinets, exposed shelving was included and placed at varying accessible heights.

New York City is considered to be a “melting pot” for fresh starts and new opportunities for anyone who seeks it. Similarly to New York City, a woman’s makeup bag can be considered a melting pot as well for the tools that can provide one with the confidence to pursue those opportunities. When starting new in the city, individuals have the option to be who they want to be and with a touch of makeup, they can enhance and embrace who they already are. The NEXT Cosmetic Company Office is intended to be a creative and collaborative environment, celebrating individuality in the beauty industry while articulating the features of a makeup bag. The structure of a makeup bag will be reflected in the plan, where there are compact and organized areas. To express the expansion of items escaping an open makeup bag, non-uniform elements will be implementeted wthin open spaces. Subtle gestures to individual makeup products through materials, lighting, and furniture will further support the design of the cosmetic company.

The spatial organization of this design is intended to be a balance of both compression and expansion. The Parti Diagram takes a literal approach to the concept of a makeup bag and what takes place when a “spill” occurs. The release from the “bag” encourages movable environments as opposed to the fixed ones. While both provide productivity, the variety of spaces will give options for the NEXT team members.

Directly to the left of the reception is a space where visiting makeup artists and other guests can give talks and tutorials on the latest makeup trends. Serving as a reflection of a compact mirror, a semicircular stage lies within the corner of the space. Monitor screens, a studio chair for a model, and abundant direct lighting are available to provide clarity for both the speaker and viewers. The NEXT team will be able to use this environment for the company’s growth in the cosmetic industry.
