I want to take this opportunity to express my thanks and appreciation for the privilege of serving as President of the University of Miami School of Law Alumni Association during the 2011-2012 year, and I ask you to join me in welcoming Devang Desai, JD ’03, as LAA President for 2012-2013. One of the greatest benefits of becoming involved in the LAA is getting to meet and know so many other graduates from different class years and practice areas. Meeting Devang has been the epitome of that experience. Not only is Devang a highly respected and skilled litigator, he is a pragmatic leader who brings warmth and humor to everything he does. I have been lucky to work with him and learn from him.

I thank our alumni and friends for their generosity during the 2011-2012 academic year. I am especially grateful to Wayne Chaplin for his support of Miami Law. As a UM Trustee, Chair of our Visiting Committee, law parent, and Chair of Miami Law’s Momentum2 Campaign Committee – Wayne’s contributions have been extraordinary. I am grateful for his generosity in creating the Chaplin Challenge for scholarship support and urge you to help us meet the “Chaplin Challenge” by contributing to an existing scholarship fund this year or creating a new one!

I cannot thank our alumni enough for all they have done to support the Law School this past year. When we asked our alumni for help, they stepped up and provided it, without hesitation. That loyalty and support is critical to the continued success of the Law School and future graduates. By supporting Law School programs, with any amount you can contribute, you help to ensure the growing stature of our school and our degrees. These contributions make a significant difference in the Law School’s ability to offer students the breadth of experience and opportunities that will help them after graduation.

And especially in today’s economy, the scholarships funded by these contributions enable some students to attend law school in the first place.

Of course, financial support is only one way in which we can help the Law School, its students, and its graduates. Please reach out to any of the members of our Board of Directors to share your ideas with us and volunteer your services. We welcome your partnership in continuing to strengthen the Law School and LAA through active participation.

Momentum2 Miami Law Kicks-Off the Momentum2 Campaign I am honored to serve as chairman of Miami Law’s Momentum2 Campaign, an effort to raise funds that will directly support scholarships, advance learning and develop innovative strategies for legal education. I strongly believe this is a pivotal time in our history.

Our 20,000-strong alumni community, who use the knowledge and skills acquired and honed at Miami Law, are helping to shape the future of the legal profession. It is up to those of us who benefitted from such an empowering education, along with everyone who has an investment in a strong and vibrant South Florida, to take the law school to the next level. Philanthropic support from all Miami Law alumni is essential in achieving the campaign’s

goals of providing scholarships for outstanding young students, supporting brilliant faculty at the peak of their productivity, and developing initiatives that foster entrepreneurial skills and collaborative programs.

My sincere gratitude to Larry Hoffman, JD ’54, and Carolyn Lamm, JD ’73, for their leadership as vice chairs and the rest of the campaign committee. Recognizing Generosity

Eleanor R. Cristol and Judge A. Jay Cristol Bankruptcy Pro Bono Assistance Clinic When Judge Cristol — who graduated from the University of Miami School of Law in 1959 and is Chief Judge Emeritus of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Florida —dons his robes, his pencil-thin mustache fashioned like a film star’s of yesteryear, it is a labor of love.

Among the other loves in his life, Judge Cristol’s late wife and the laws of bankruptcy figure prominently. In honor of one and in support of the other, Judge Cristol has made a sizeable donation to Miami Law, a gracious act for which he was honored at a reception on April 12th in the Alma Jennings Foundation Student Lounge. Judge Cristol’s gift will go toward the school’s bankruptcy clinic, which is to be known as the Eleanor R. Cristol and Judge A. Jay Cristol Bankruptcy Pro Bono Assistance Clinic.

Judge Cristol earned a Ph.D. in 1997 from the University of Miami Graduate School of International Studies after spending 17 years

researching an attack during the Six Day War on the USS Liberty, in which 34 Americans died. He wrote a book on the subject, The Liberty Incident: The 1967 Attack on the U.S. Navy Spy Ship (Potomac Books, 2002).

Judge Cristol was President of the Law Alumni Association in 1985, and received the Thomas Davidson III Memorial Service Award. He also received the Henry Latimer Professionalism Award at the law school’s Homecoming Breakfast in 2008.

Eleanor Cristol died on Nov. 14, 2010. At an event celebrating her life, Judge Cristol said, “She has given me the most wonderful, beautiful years of my life.”

Scholarship Fund

L.L.M. Real Property Development Program

Tod Aronovitz, JD ’74, Past President of the Law Alumni Association, and former President of The Florida Bar, has made a significant contribution to create The Honorable Sidney M. Aronovitz Scholarship Fund, in honor of his late father. The scholarship, at the University of Miami School of Law, will be awarded each year to recognize student leadership, character, and academic excellence. The recipients will be known as the Judge Aronovitz Scholars.

“He was my hero,” Aronovitz told The Florida Bar Journal at the time of his election as President of The Florida Bar in 2002. “And I don’t have many heroes in my life. He was someone whom everyone respected. He was a great combination: he was a legal scholar, he loved being a judge, and he was a very fair-minded person. And whoever came into his courtroom if you were an assistant U.S. Attorney, a public defender, a private civil attorney, a litigant, or a juror - you knew you were in a dignified setting, and you knew you were going to get a fair shake.”

In 1976, President Gerald Ford nominated Judge Aronovitz to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida. He remained on the court until his death in 1997. Notably, he presided over the claim of treasure hunter Mel Fisher to the Spanish galleon, Atocha. Also, during the early days of the debate, Judge Aronovitz ruled that married women did not require consent from their husbands when obtaining an abortion. In 1980, he ordered the release of all of the more than 2,000 vessels seized by the federal government in the aftermath of the Mariel Boatlift.

In 2009, President Barack Obama signed into law the naming of the U.S. Federal Courthouse in Key West after Judge Aronovitz, a third generation Key West native. The first Aronovitz, great-grandfather David, immigrated to the bustling port city from Romania in 1889.

Judge Aronovitz assigned then-Dean of UM School of Law, Minnette Massey as Special Master, in several highly complex discovery cases with multiple parties. “He was such an amazing man,” said Professor Massey.

“They are a grand family, one of the best in the community. They are the best lawyers and the nicest people and I’m so proud of them.”

In a career of many momentous days, the Alumnus of Distinction dinner on November 3, 2011 must have struck the honoree, Robert H. Traurig, JD ‘50, as a particularly important occasion, one to remember with fondness.

The award, given by Miami Law’s Alumni Association to some of its most notable and accomplished members, was conferred upon Traurig -- a founder of the Greenberg Traurig law firm in 1967, now one of the largest in the United States . “He is a most worthy recipient of this award,” said Jerry M. Markowitz, JD ‘74, chairman of the Alumnus dinner and former president of the Law Alumni Association, describing the “tremendous career of a fabulous human being.”

Miami Law Dean Patricia D. White had a surprise for Traurig when she announced that, thanks to a substantial gift from the Greenberg Traurig firm, the law school’s Graduate Program in Real Property Development will be renamed in his honor. The program, designed for recent law school graduates and for practitioners interested in fine-tuning their practice, is to be called the Robert H. Traurig–Greenberg Traurig L.L.M. Real Property Development Program.

Dean White said that Traurig, whose specialty was land-use matters, had made an “extraordinary contribution to this community,” and that it was essential that Miami have a great university “that produces people like Bob Traurig.”

Finally, with applause echoing off the walls, Traurig made his way to the podium. “This is a glorious evening,” Traurig told the crowd. “It hardly seems possible that more than 40 years have passed since we formed this law firm.” Then, as is customary with this modest man, he deflected the attention, quoting Ralph Waldo Emerson’s dictum, “All are needed by each one; Nothing is fair or good alone,” from the poem “Each and All.” Traurig said that any success the law firm might have enjoyed was “the result of hard work and diligence and teamwork,” and thanked all those who had “done so much for the firm.” He also expressed his gratitude to the administration and staff of the law school.

“Thanks to all of you who have meant so much to the law school and to me personally,” Traurig concluded, prompting a standing ovation.
