After celebrating our anniversary issue and sharing the new look for Miami Kids Magazine, this AUGUST–SEPTEMBER BACK-TO-SCHOOL ISSUE marks a very special new chapter for us.

Back-to-school season is always filled with emotion — new beginnings, new routines, new teachers, new friendships, and new opportunities for our children to grow. It is a time to remind every child that they are seen, supported, and that they belong.

This month, we are proud to feature Will Manso on our cover during his visit to the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind.

As WPLG Local 10’s Sports Director and a familiar voice in South Florida sports, Will has spent years telling stories of athletes, teams, perseverance, and the moments that bring our community together.

During his visit to the Lighthouse, Will’s story became more than sports. It became a reminder of what children learn beyond the game: confidence, teamwork, trust, resilience, and the courage to try something new. Watching him connect with the students reminded us that every child deserves the opportunity to feel capable, included, and celebrated — on the field, in the classroom, and in life.

Inside this issue, you’ll also find our interview with Superintendent Dr. José L. Dotres, helpful features on afterschool programs, and our inaugural Voices of Inclusion feature, where students from across our community share what belonging means to them. Their heartfelt reflections reminded us that one of the greatest gifts we can give our children is the feeling that they truly belong.

We also invite families to join us at our annual Back to School Event on August 8 at Sunset Place Mall from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Families can enjoy free vision tests and glasses, backpacks, resources, and more as we come together to start the school year with confidence.

Will Manso on sports, confidence, and what kids learn after the bell rings

At Miami Kids Magazine, we believe some of the most important lessons children learn do not always happen inside a classroom.

Sometimes, they happen on a field, during a game, through a challenge, or in a moment when a child realizes they are capable of more than they imagined.

For our Back-to-School issue, sports journalist and father of three Will Manso joined us at Miami Lighthouse to experience Blind Soccer and help spotlight a message that connects deeply with families: sports are not only about winning, competition, or talent. They are about confidence, teamwork, accountability, joy, and belonging.

For Manso, being part of this story felt personal.

“Being a father of three and covering sports for a living made it an easy choice,” he shared. “I’ve seen my kids gain confidence and understand that everyone has a responsibility on a team.”

That responsibility is something he has also seen in the athletes he has covered throughout his career. Before the highlights, trophies, or final scores, there are lessons learned in practice, in teamwork, and in showing up for others.

“Teamwork and accountability are two huge lessons all kids can learn through sports,” Manso said. “The ability to work hard together and trust each other for a common goal. That discipline goes beyond sports.”

At Miami Lighthouse, those lessons came to life through Blind Soccer. The game requires communication, listening, awareness, and trust — but what stood out most to Manso was something beautifully simple: the joy of being part of the game.

“The absolute joy the kids had at being in a game,” he said. “They all wanted a chance to do their part, and with every pass and kick came a huge smile.”

For children returning to school, those

lessons matter. Trust, communication, and confidence are not only part of a sport; they are part of the classroom, friendships, family life, and every new experience ahead.

“These are important lessons that apply to every class the students are in, every family situation that comes up, and any future job they may have,” Manso said.

This issue also features Miami Kids Magazine’s After-School Guide, making the message especially timely. After-school activities give children a place to move, connect, try something new, and discover

strengths they may not yet know they have.

“After a long day of classes, it’s good for students to turn their attention to a different challenge,” Manso said. “Sports are another way to stimulate the mind and body.”

As Miami students begin a new school year, Manso hopes they remember that growth often begins with trying.

“Always do your best and never focus on failure,” he said. “Don’t be afraid to try new things and accept new challenges. Real success comes from new experiences and growth.”

And the message he wants Miami kids to carry with them is simple: “Every day is a blessing and a new opportunity to grow and have fun. Take advantage of every day to the fullest with a smile.”

Sports are games and supposed to be fun.

No matter the age or situation, that’s the core of all sports.

Preparation for Success

s summer winds down, families across Miami begin the familiar transition from relaxed days to structured school routines.

The return to school often brings excitement, but it can also bring nerves about new teachers, academic expectations, friendships, and busy schedules. A little preparation before the first day can help children feel confident, organized, and ready for a successful year.

One of the most important steps is reestablishing a consistent sleep routine. During the summer, bedtimes and wake-up times often become more flexible. About two weeks before school begins, gradually adjust your child’s schedule to better

match the school day. Adequate sleep supports concentration, memory, mood, and overall health.

Morning and evening routines can also make a meaningful difference.

When my sons were in elementary school, they would lay out their clothes the night before, and we kept a bin by the door for backpacks, permission slips, water bottles, lunch money, and after-school items such as karate or Cub Scouts gear. These

small systems helped our mornings feel calmer and gave my children a greater sense of independence. A little preparation the night before can prevent a lot of last-minute stress.

Back-to-school shopping can be both practical and fun. Most schools provide grade-level supply lists online, making it easier to prepare in advance. Letting children help choose their backpack, lunchbox, folders, or pencil case gives them a sense of ownership. It is also a wonderful opportunity to teach responsibility and the importance of caring for their belongings. And yes, labeling everything is always worth the time.

At home, a quiet and comfortable study space can help children focus once homework begins. Younger students may need a parent nearby for gentle support, while older children may prefer more independence. The space does not need to be elaborate, but it should be calm, free from distractions, and stocked with basic supplies. A consistent place for schoolwork helps build positive study habits that can last throughout the year.

The beginning of a new school year is also an ideal time to talk about goals. Children may want to improve their grades, join a team, make new friends, or become more organized. Ask what they hope to accomplish and, more importantly, what steps they can take to get there. This encourages ownership and may even help avoid the classic response: “Whatever.”

Health and wellness should be part of the preparation, too. Before school begins, make sure medical, dental, and vision checkups are up to date, along with any required forms or vaccinations. Planning nourishing breakfasts, balanced lunches, and healthy snacks gives children the energy they need to stay focused throughout the day.

Finally, remember that returning to school can bring a wide range of emotions. Younger children may worry about separating from their parents, while older students may feel anxious about social situations or fitting in. Creating a safe, nonjudgmental space for conversation takes practice. As parents, we often want to protect, solve, and fix, but sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is listen more and talk less.

With thoughtful preparation, children can begin the school year feeling supported, confident, and ready to thrive.

Through our High School Diploma Plus approach, students graduate with more than a diploma.

They can earn college credit, industry certifications, and participate in internships, pre-apprenticeships, and apprenticeships that connect learning to future careers.

This year also marks an important milestone as we launch our new Portrait of an M-DCPS Graduate. It reflects a community vision for every student who leaves our schools—not only academically prepared, but equipped with the knowledge, skills, and character to thrive in a changing world. Every graduate should leave our schools with the attributes of collaborator, problem solver, resilient learner, community champion, and an adaptive graduate. Those qualities will serve them long after they leave our classrooms.

Innovation remains an important part of that work. Technology continues to transform

our world, and our responsibility is to ensure students are ready for it. But technology does not change education. Great educators do. Innovation is most powerful when it strengthens teaching, expands opportunities, and helps unlock the potential that already exists within every student and amplifies our human connections, creativity, and purpose at the heart of learning.

We also remain committed to safety and security. Parents want to know their children are safe, and that will always be our highest priority. Thanks to the longstanding support of Miami-Dade voters, every M-DCPS school is staffed with a dedicated School Police Officer. The answer is that coding is about much more than writing code, it teaches children how to think. It develops critical thinking, analytical reasoning, creativity, communication, and problem-solving skills. It helps them learn how to organize ideas, identify patterns, and approach complex challenges systematically. These experiences also help build neurological connections that support structured thinking and lifelong learning.

Every parent has heard the words, “I can’t do this.” Whether it’s a challenging math assignment, a science project, or a new technology they’re trying to understand, moments of uncertainty are a natural part of learning. In today’s world, where artificial intelligence can generate answers, the most valuable skill children can develop isn’t simply technical knowledge, it’s confidence.

Through STEM learning, children gain the problem-solving abilities, resilience, and selfbelief needed to navigate challenges both in school and life.

STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) is about much more than preparing children for future careers.

Whether students are conducting experiments in science class, solving realworld math problems, building robots, or learning the basics of coding, they are developing a mindset that encourages

curiosity, persistence, and creative thinking.

One of the greatest benefits of STEM learning is that it gives children opportunities to struggle productively. A robot or coding project may not work on the first try. An engineering design may need to be rebuilt several times. These experiences teach children that mistakes are not failures, they are part of the learning process.

Each challenge they overcome builds confidence. Children begin to trust their ability to solve problems, think independently, and adapt when things don’t go according to plan.

Over time, that confidence extends beyond STEM activities and into the classroom, sports, friendships, and everyday life.

STEM experiences also help children

AI is a powerful tool, but it cannot replace the foundational thinking skills children develop through hands-on STEM experiences. Just as calculators did not eliminate the need to learn math, AI does not eliminate the value of learning coding concepts and computational thinking.

How to Choose the Right School for Your Child A Miami Kids Magazine guide to finding the place where your child can feel supported, challenged, and truly seen.

In South Florida, choosing a school is never just about choosing a building. It is about choosing the people who will greet your child each morning, the classrooms where they will discover what they love, and the community that will walk beside your family during some of the most important years of childhood.

For many parents, the search begins with practical questions. How close is the school to home? What are the hours? Is there aftercare? What programs are offered? These details matter because the right school also has to work for the rhythm of family life.

But once the logistics are clear, the deeper question becomes: Where will my child be able to grow with confidence?

At Miami Kids Magazine, we believe every child deserves to feel like they belong. That belief is at the heart of this Schools Guide. South Florida families are beautifully diverse, and so are their children. Some students thrive in a traditional academic environment.

Some need a smaller classroom. Some need more challenge. Some need a school that understands how they learn before expecting them to shine.

There is no single “best school” for every family. There is only the school that feels right for your child at this moment in their life.

When visiting schools, pay attention to more than the brochure. Notice the energy in the hallways. Listen to how teachers speak about students. Look at whether children seem engaged, respected, and comfortable asking questions. A beautiful campus can be impressive,

but the daily culture of a school is what children carry home with them.

Parents should also ask how the school supports the whole child. Strong academics are important, but children also need confidence, creativity, friendship, emotional support, movement, and opportunities to discover who they are becoming. The right school should challenge students without making them feel invisible. It should celebrate achievement while also honoring effort, kindness, curiosity, and growth.

For children who learn differently, need additional support, or have unique talents, the conversation should go even deeper.

Ask how teachers adapt instruction, how communication with parents works, and what happens when a child struggles.

Sometimes, the simplest acts of kindness leave the greatest impact.

Isabella reminds us that inclusion is more than inviting someone to play, it is making sure they feel welcomed, heard, and comfortable enough to truly belong. Her reflection encourages us to notice those who may be sitting alone, listen with empathy, and create spaces where every child feels accepted and valued.

Her words remind us that belonging begins when we genuinely care about how others feel.

Sometimes understanding inclusion begins with seeing the world through someone else’s experience.

Stefano shares a heartfelt story about visiting Disneyland Paris with his cousin, who has autism. What first seemed like a special privilege became a meaningful lesson about accessibility, empathy, and removing barriers so everyone can fully participate.

His reflection reminds us that inclusion is not about treating everyone exactly the same, it is about making sure everyone has what they need to belong.

Asking someone what they like makes them feel noticed, embraced, and cared for.

Being inclusive doesn’t always mean treating everyone the same. It means making sure everyone has what they need to enjoy life.
