Advice and Encouragement from

Being a mother is both the hardest and best role you can ever have. Unfortunately, guilt and self-judgment rob us of the joy we should experience daily.

How do you describe a mother’s love for her child? Mother’s love is the purest form of love. It cannot be compared with anything in this universe. Mothers always want the best for their children and will never compromise the quality of things they can offer their little ones. On this upcoming Mother’s Day, let’s celebrate our many accomplishments together.

The truth is, there are tough days for everyone. It may look different, but no mother is perfect. There will be a day when your child puts on what you selected to wear. They will let you brush their teeth and comb their hair, and they will even eat what you serve them.

These days may be few and far between, but it will be glorious when it happens. Those days will remind you that your child doesn’t act like a monster on purpose. They are still trying to figure out the world around them.

The few moments of obedience will give you a little boost of confidence to make it another day.

I interviewed a few mothers and shared their thoughts.

JENNIFER, MOM OF THREE TEENS- F15, M13, M12.

Encouragement: A Mother will only ever be in one of three places with her kids: in front of them to cheer them on, behind them to have their backs, or next to them so they aren’t walking alone.

Advice: In dealing with teens, “Listen more, Lecture less.” Moms, please don’t judge other moms. We need a “tribe” to support each other and help all through this journey.

BRIA, 2ND- YEAR MEDICAL SCHOOL STUDENT. MOM OF TWO DAUGHTERS, AGES 3 & 9 MONTHS. Encouragement: Being gentle with yourself as a mom is so important. The hard work and extra hours you put into ensuring the health and safety of your children will not go unnoticed. I am often faced with demands from many angles with no time to do everything in one day. What I have learned is that everything will be okay. I have had to accept that the difference between earning a 100% on an exam and a 85% meant that one would allow me to spend extra time with my children. I have also had to learn that it is okay to go months without seeing my friends so that any extra free time could be put towards my daughters outside of studying. Motherhood is about sacrifice, but it is beautiful and worth every second.

Advice: I advise being present with your children and enjoying each moment. Put away phones with social media distractions— close laptop screens with messages awaiting responses. Spending time with your children,

show them that they are your priority. Show them that in this world, they can always depend on Mom to be there for them.

ESTHER, GRANDMOTHER OF SEAN, AUTISM SPECTRUM Advice: stay aware of the services available and fight to get those services. If in a school setting, visit the school - if something does not seem right, it must be corrected. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from family and good friends. It is not an easy job. But if family and friends do not accept your child for who she/he is - there is nothing wrong with not including them in your circle. Making fun of a disability or comparing a child with another is not good for any kid, but especially a special one.

Conclusion: Difficult days will happen; hang in there!

Babies don’t arrive with a manual; you make mistakes. You learn. You love unwavering and unconditionally. I guarantee you will never look back on your life and say, “I spent too much time with my kids.” “ You can have it all, just not all at once” - Oprah “You don’t have to be perfect, to be amazing”. GOOD – OR BAD – HEART HEALTH BEGINS NOW Habits and lifestyle behaviors established in adolescence – such as staying physically active and eating a healthy diet, or not – can put a person on a path toward good or bad cardiovascular health, say experts like pediatric cardiologist Dr. Teresa Lee. Studies have shown that atherosclerosis, the hardening of the arteries due to plaque buildup, can begin to develop as early as adolescence. Hardened, or narrowed, arteries block blood flow and can lead to heart attacks, strokes or other problems later in life. An unhealthy diet, smoking, a sedentary lifestyle, obesity and being overweight can contribute to high cholesterol, a major risk factor for atherosclerosis, heart disease and stroke.

LISTEN TO YOUR HEART While most teens will have healthy hearts, it’s important to notice signs or symptoms that something could be amiss – and speak to someone about it, Lee said.

For example, “if there’s

ever something you were able to do that all of a sudden you are unable to do,” that could signal a problem, she said. “You are your best predictor of when things are off.”

PREGNANCY CAN AFFECT YOUR HEART “Pregnancy is a big stress for anybody, and it’s a big stress especially on the heart,” Lee said.

Pregnant teens can be at high risk for preeclampsia, a condition that can cause very high blood pressure.

Pregnancy can be especially problematic if a teen has an underlying congenital heart defect or cardiovascular risk factors, such as high blood pressure or obesity, which can lead to pregnancy complications.

SOME THINGS MAY FEEL LIKE HEART PROBLEMS, BUT AREN’T A rapid heartbeat could be a sign of heart trouble, but it might not be, Simms-Cendan said. It could be a sign of anxiety, which has increased in prevalence among teens and adolescents since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

“When teens have anxiety, their heart races,” she said. “This feels frightening, but if their heart is healthy, they are not in danger.”

PARENTS CAN PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE Talking to teenagers about heart health can be challenging for parents. But if they want their kids to practice healthy habits, the first thing they should do is lead by example, Lee and Simms-Cendan said.

“Teenagers are not always receptive to hearing advice or critiques about eating or sleeping habits from the adults in their life,” Lee said. “Honestly, I think one of the best things parents can do is mirror a healthy lifestyle and healthy choices.”

How will I know if my child needs an autism evaluation

At one point or another, you may come to question whether your child needs an autism evaluation: either due to behavioral concerns, developmental milestones he or she is not meeting, or a combination of the two.

Symptom emergence The characteristics of autism can vary from child to child; some children show clear signs very early on, while others have more subtle traits that are easily missed until much later.

Other considerations It’s important to keep in mind that autism also manifests differently in girls and boys, with the condition often going undiagnosed (or resulting in misdiagnoses) among girls.

The abilities and needs of autistic people also vary and can evolve over time; some children reflect uneven skills, with very advanced development in specific areas but challenges in others.

Specific autism characteristic to be aware of For reference, here is a list of features associated with autism and how they manifest across unique developmental stages.

Before 24 months: • Difficult to get your child’s attention • Does not share enjoyment with you • Does not respond to his/her name • Uses few to no gestures (e.g., showing or pointing) • Does not combine gestures, sounds and eye contact to communicate • Does not imitate simple games or

engage in pretend play Pulls your hand as a tool to communicate his/her needs Does not notice people and is more interested in objects Plays by engaging in repetitive actions, filling and emptying, lining up objects, and knocking over and rolling on a continual basis Becomes very upset over changes in routine or if stopped from engaging in repetitive behaviors

Age 3 to 5 years: • Exhibits delayed speech or stops using words he/she used to say • Produces odd vocalizations and has an unusual tone of voice and/or difficulty modulating his/her voice • Repeats others’ words and phrases from favorite shows • Is very sensitive and reactive to sound, light, touch, and texture • Displays a strong interest in unusual sensory experiences such as licking/ smelling objects and/or looking out of the corner of the eyes • Does not use many facial expressions indicating surprise, happiness, sadness, and/or anger • Has difficulty expressing feelings and discussing experiences • Prefers to play alone and has difficulty initiating play and joining other children • Experiences frequent emotional dysregulation and takes longer to recover than other children • Exhibits a strong desire for and insistence on consistency with respect to clothing, food, toys, etc.

• Finds it difficult to transition from one activity to another

Experiences digestive issues, insists on a restricted diet, and engages in stool withholding

School age and adolescents: • Finds it difficult to make and maintain friendships • Unaware of personal space and may get too close during conversations • Finds it difficult to engage in back-andforth conversations • Mainly interested in discussing his or her own interests • Finds it difficult to shift to a new perspective, becoming stuck on a specific topic • May not understand sarcasm, humor, and figures of speech • Becomes easily overwhelmed and distressed in new situations or when facing change • Resists any change to his/her environment (places, people, objects) • Typically exhibits a high or low pain tolerance Most parents have mixed feelings about receiving an autism evaluation and formal diagnosis, fearing that the diagnosis or label will limit their child (understandably so). What is important to understand here is that receiving a diagnosis does not change anything about your child.

What it does do, however, is provide you with clarity and validation. It also guides intervention and support to ultimately improve your child’s quality of life. It is important to seek out an autism specialist to ensure a comprehensive, inclusive approach to assessment and subsequent recommendations.

1.- GLORIA, CAN YOU SHARE WITH US A BIT ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY TO BECOMING A NEWS ANCHOR AT TELEMUNDO 51 MIAMI? WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE A CAREER IN JOURNALISM? My journey began when I arrived from Cuba as a 20 year old. I was studying accounting over there but decided to explore a new path. Recounting stories and the pursuit of truth always intrigued me and I had friends already in the media world so I auditioned at a small local station, began working as a street reporter while simultaneously beginning my studies in journalism at FIU and the rest is history.

2.- AS A PROMINENT FIGURE IN THE MEDIA INDUSTRY, HOW DO YOU NAVIGATE THE DEMANDS OF YOUR CAREER WHILE ALSO FULFILLING YOUR ROLE AS A MOTHER? ANY TIPS FOR OTHER WORKING MOMS OUT THERE? It is not easy being a working mom because both jobs are full-time. The main difference is that you generally know what to expect at work, but as a mom, you always have to prepare for the unexpected. It is important to have your priorities well established, and while your career is important, it is not eternal.

However, being a mother is. Eternal you have to adjust your career to the responsibilities of your primary job, motherhood. Not the other way around.

3.-WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST REWARDING ASPECT OF YOUR CAREER THUS FAR, AND HOW DO YOU FIND A BALANCE BETWEEN YOUR PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL LIFE? I have had the benefit of covering important moments in history, visiting interesting places, and interviewing famous

personalities, but the most rewarding moments in my career as a journalist have definitely been when a story or project I work on makes a difference in the life of a person in need. You carry those stories forever. One of those stories, for example, was when I was contacted by the family of a young man who was gravely ill and crippled in Cuba and needed to travel to the US for medical care but couldn’t obtain a visa. We made his story public, and the attention it generated moved a member of Congress to get involved. The young man ultimately obtained his visa, was treated here, and even visited Disney World.

4.- HOW DO YOU INCORPORATE YOUR CULTURAL BACKGROUND AND HERITAGE INTO YOUR WORK AS A NEWS ANCHOR, AND WHAT MESSAGE DO YOU HOPE TO CONVEY TO YOUR AUDIENCE, ESPECIALLY YOUNG VIEWERS? Working for a Spanish language network makes it easy to maintain my culture on air.

The stories that we cover and the issues we discuss are directed at the sensibilities of a Latin audience. We are also fortunate to live in a community where we celebrate our cultural differences. I want our viewers, especially younger ones, to recognize that we work very hard to deliver a product that will be interesting to them based on their interests and priorities.

5.-MOTHER’S DAY IS APPROACHING. CAN YOU SHARE ANY SPECIAL TRADITIONS OR MOMENTS THAT YOU CHERISH WITH YOUR FAMILY ON THIS

DAY? HOW DO YOU CELEBRATE BEING A MOTHER? My family is thankfully full of wonderful mothers. I am lucky to have a vibrant 91 year old grandmother, a strong mother and a dynamic sister. We make a point to spend quality time together throughout the year, but on Mother’s Day, in particular, there is nothing more important than being together with our children, husbands, and other family.

6.-LASTLY, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ASPIRING JOURNALISTS, PARTICULARLY YOUNG WOMEN WHO ASPIRE TO FOLLOW IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS? HOW CAN THEY NAVIGATE THE CHALLENGES OF THE INDUSTRY WHILE STAYING TRUE TO THEMSELVES? The media world has changed enormously in the last two decades. Before, it was driven by a handful of major television networks, newspapers, and radio stations that delivered to you the news they felt was important. Today, those platforms have diminished in importance, and most young people, for example, will never read a printed newspaper. We have shifted to a digital world where the consumer is now the one who decides what content they choose to consume and where they choose to consume it from. The fundamentals of journalism, however, remain the same. The pursuit of truth. The responsibility a journalist has to draw attention to important stories, demand accountability, and inform the public with honesty and integrity is still the core of our work, no matter where or how the story is told.

Miami Kids Magazine’s Summer Camp Expo and Easter Event.

The event was held on March 16th at Murray Park in collaboration with the City of South Miami it was a resounding success, bringing together families from across the community for a day of fun-filled activities and valuable information. With a vibrant atmosphere and many offerings, attendees enjoyed exploring various summer camp options and discounts while also celebrating the joy of Easter with egg hunts, pictures with the Easter Bunny, and festive entertainment. The Coconut Grove Arts Festival The Coconut Grove Festival was a whirlwind of excitement and fun. We were thrilled to be a part of it! Over the course of three days, kids from all ages visited the Inner Artist and enjoyed at our cookie decoration contest, recreating the MKM logo with edible markers. The creativity and enthusiasm of the young artists was truly inspiring, and it was a joy to see their faces light up as they proudly displayed their edible masterpieces. Kids also enjoyed a range of activities, including face painting, live music, and many other interactive experiences on stage.

Superintendent’s 5K On Saturday, March 2nd the Foundation for New Education Initiatives (FNEI) hosted the 9th Annual Superintendent’s 5K benefiting local public schools. The run//walk promotes health and wellness in our community. FNEI donates 80% of the race registration fees to participating schools. This year over 5600 people registered, representing over 220 schools. FNEI awarded $72,256 to the represented schools. Over $375,000 has been awarded to participating schools.

The American Heart Association’s Greater Miami and Fort Lauderdale market raised over $1 million to save and improve lives across the community during its 2024 Broward Heart Walk on March 10. Over 6,000 people came together to support lifesaving cardiovascular research, advocacy efforts and community impact initiatives.

Miami Lighthouse for the Blind: 95th Diamond Anniversary Celebration

Miami Lighthouse marked a historic milestone of 95 years of service with our Diamond Anniversary Celebration at the historic Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables. The soldout crowd of community leaders heard from President and CEO, Virginia Jacko, about the Board of Directors commitment to sustain and grow for another 95 years. CEO Jacko announced a two-year campaign to raise $9.5 million to continue the legacy of transforming the lives of blind babies to seniors affected by uncorrectable vision loss for the next 95 years. A “Matching Team” of philanthropists have already committed a $4 million contribution to Miami Lighthouse’s donation goal. A special thanks to the 95th Diamond Anniversary Host Committee Co-Chaired by Terri Shikany and Linda Corey.
