A M E S S AG E OF G RAT I T UDE 2018-2019

WITH GRATITUDE TO THE COUNTRY DAY COMMUNITY

As we wrap up 2019, I’m taking this opportunity to reflect on a year of transition for Miami Country Day School. The 2018-2019 school year was one with significant changes in its 81-year history. I like to refer to it as a passage of time moving into its future and its next phase of identity. In May 2018, the school celebrated and honored former Head of School, Dr. John Davies for his 32 years of service to Miami Country Day School. In July 2018, James W. Connor took the reigns as Interim Head of School. He brought over 35 years of independent school leadership experience to the position, most recently as Head of School at Germantown Academy outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

At this time, I want to wish everyone the happiest of holidays and I thank you for being a part of the Miami Country Day Community. With gratitude, Chris Bellows, President Board of Trustees

Miami Country Day was fortunate that the school aligned with Jim’s educational philosophies and background and he was the perfect match that guided us through the transition seamlessly. Jim emphasized relationships and the value and importance of different perspectives and opinions. He believed that change is a positive, fun, and a great way for growth, not only for himself personally but for the school community. He started by listening. Jim told the Class of 2019 that he did not want to be someone who just hands them their diploma. He spent time cultivating relationships with the Senior class and came to know them individually and collectively. At graduation he received an Honorary Class of 2019 Diploma. This was also a year that honored eight members of the community who made their transition to retirement after many years of service to our school. It is with gratitude and appreciation that I personally want to say thank you to these individuals who were honored at the annual YOSDay (Years of Service) celebration in June: Carolyn Dorn (40 years), Susan Glick (26 years), Jenny Knight (23 years), Nina Lucchi (30 years), Margaret Mahoney (30 years), Yvonne Moyer (30 years), Fredi Rosenfeld (40 years), and Sorela Schultz (19 years). Governing and serving our school are 29 individuals who serve on the Board of Trustees and I want to take this opportunity to thank them for their service. They certainly played an important role in guiding the transition by searching for and hiring Jim Connor. The Board of Trustees represents our constituency as they are alumni, parents, alumni parents and grandparents. They spend their time consulting, advising and sharing their expertise as business owners, attorneys, financiers, developers and entrepreneurs. The primary role of the Board of Trustees is to ensure the financial sustainability of our school. To that end, it would not be possible to do so without philanthropy and the dedicated Board members who make personal commitments every year to support the school. It is philanthropy that brings the school’s Mission to life for our students and teachers. The school is fortunate to receive donations from trustees, parents, alumni, alumni parents, grandparents and friends of the school. Philanthropy is a distinguishing factor that ensures greatness and supports every student, every day. In that way, the 2018-19 school year was no different. A list of donors for the 2018-19 school year is included in this publication. Thank you to members of our community who give gifts that the school is able to allocate as needed to support the Mission. I share my deepest gratitude for each and every person who impacts our school community with their gifts and with their time and talent. I will wrap up my reflection on our year of transition by acknowledging one of the goals Jim Connor shared as he took over as Interim Head. As he began his year of service, he said that he wanted to build upon the legacy of great leadership provided for so many years by Dr. Davies and the Board of Trustees. He was committed to helping Country Day move from strength to greater strength in the appointment of a permanent Head of School. That goal was realized by the end of Jim’s tenure with the naming of Mariandl Hufford, President and Head of School in July.

A Country Day story by Dr. Lawrence M. and Mrs. Carol Stanfill, Alumni Parents and Grandparents. Larry continues to serve the school in his role as a Trustee Emeritus. August 1975 was a memorable time for our family. Miami Country Day School had begun accepting girls at the previously all boys school, and our daughter Susan began fifth grade at Country Day that year. The Stanfill family became a part of the Miami Country Day family, and it has continued to be a memorable journey for us. Susan ‘82 and her sister, Lauri ‘87, both graduated from Miami Country Day, as did our grandson Kurt Carlson ‘18. Our granddaughter, Kate Carlson, is a Junior. One of the first things that impressed us with Miami Country Day was their attention to the development of the whole child. Attention is given to the development of each child academically, emotionally, physically, and socially. Opportunities are available for students to learn how to be a knowledgeable participant of their school, community, country, and the world at large. If I were to take an aerial photo of Miami Country Day School when Susan walked to her fifth grade classroom and superimpose it on top of an aerial shot of the campus today, you would be astonished. More land, more classrooms, science labs, the state-of-the-art Center of the Arts, a huge lighted athletic field, a magnificent library and more! More important than the physical buildings are the opportunities for enrichment and development of the whole child that have been enhanced by these physical changes. The campus may look different, but the education of the whole child has continued to be uppermost in the philosophy of Miami Country Day School. Our family has shown great commitment to our Country Day family, both financially and in serving. Members of our family continue to do so even after their children no longer matriculate at Miami Country Day. Our children are receiving the benefits of the Miami Country Day School families from the past, and we want to help provide these opportunities for current and future families. What can we do as parents and grandparents? • Our family has committed to financially support Miami Country Day School for the past 31 years. • Larry served on the Board of Trustees for 34 years and, through the Board committees, was able to give input on many aspects of the school’s development. • Our family supports and participates in school activities such as plays, concerts, art exhibits, the John Davies Cultural Art Series, Grandparents’ Day, the Holiday Bazaar, and many more. Let your children, the faculty and the school know that you are a part of the MCDS family and glad to be there. Come, join in the many blessings!
