PRESIDENT AND HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear Spartan Community, As I reflect on my first year as your leader (and what a year it was for all of us) the one word that comes to mind is resilient. Miami Country Day School teachers, students, parents, alumni – the entire Spartan Community – showed its resilience in myriad ways.

Little did any of us know after the 2019-20 school year kicked off with my installation on September 6, 2019, a truly joyful affair, that it would wrap up in June 2020 with us being forced apart due to a pandemic.

We know that true learning is rooted in strong relationships; the relationships between teachers and students, and the relationships between peers. Our Country Day community is adept at creating those relationships, but doing so online tested our creativity and resilience once again. Advisory programming had to be adjusted, and the launch of Spartan Connect events allowed us to reach into living rooms and strengthen our community ties by showcasing all that makes Country Day special.

Despite that, I believe the members of our community showed up for each other in ways big and small, and exemplified Country Day’s values of honor, respect, wisdom, and compassion.

There were also many examples of flexibility on the part of our teachers, students, and parents, as well as grace, which to me is a radical form of compassion. One of our core values most called upon during this time.

There was no better example of the strength of our community and of the resilience that sits at its core than our fabulous drive-in commencement ceremony, in which we celebrated the class of 2020 with raucous abandon. My first graduating class was always going to have a special place in my heart, but never could I have imagined that it would be the class that would receive special mention in the history of our school because of their collective strength and resilience in the face of unimaginable circumstances.

I will forever be proud of the Class of 2020.

The beginning of the school year was “normal”, though it did include my first hurricane season, one of the busiest ever, and until mid-March, we were together in person and our community spirit shone through our assemblies, celebrations, and traditions.

We enjoyed celebrating student successes, cheering on our student athletes, watching our artists perform and share their creative work, participating in the annual Walk the Walk, traveling for field trips and service projects, celebrating the season with our traditional Yule Log Ceremony and Holiday Singalong. The school year was moving along in the many predictable ways we know and love.

Then our world as we knew it began to shift. The predictable became unpredictable, almost daily. On March 12, 2020 the Incident Command Team sent word that the last day of in-person classes was to be on March 13. We were in, what has now become a common phrase, unprecedented times. Work began in earnest to prepare for the shift to online teaching/learning.

There were many meetings by Zoom as we adjusted to online learning. It was not perfect. It was hard, probably the hardest thing I have ever been a part of in my career, but this resilient Spartan community met the moment. It was hard on teachers and students, as well as parents who were also working from home and assisting their children in navigating their virtual school.

Many people have commented to me that I had “quite a first year.” And I did. But throughout, there were moments, many moments of exquisite joy. As you look through this report, you will see some of those amazing moments. I ask you to reflect on what you recall of those times.

I also want to acknowledge that in this challenging time, many of you continued to support the school’s Mission through philanthropic donations, and for that I am humbled and grateful.

I invite you to remember that we made it through and will continue to do so because we are Country Day strong and Spartan Proud.

I extend my gratitude to the entire community for exhibiting flexibility and grace, creativity and resilience. Yes, the 2019-20 school year was unforgettable for many reasons beyond our control. And yet I am so very proud of the fact that we made this year unforgettable on our own terms as well.

CHRIS BELLOWS

BOARD OF TRUSTEES PRESIDENT 2014-2020 Chris Bellows has served on the Board of Trustees for 19 years and completed six years of service as Board President in 2020. A quote that Chris shared in the past from one of his colleagues and mentors is, “Do Good…Be Somebody.” For those who know Chris, you know he lives that motto. Chris has served the school in many capacities ranging from the Financial Aid & Policy Committee to Legal Advisory.

He currently serves as Chair of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, the COVID-19 Task Force and the Audit Committee. He is on the Strategic Design Team, Finance, Committee on Trustees and Executive Committee.

When the Board acknowledged Chris for his service as President, they awarded him with two well-deserved honors.

Christopher N. Bellows Breakthrough Scholars Chris has been committed to serving young people, often from disadvantaged backgrounds, for his adult life. In the 90s, Chris brought a teaching mentoring program to the school called Right Trak and Chris has been a part of the Country Day community since then. With his commitment to young people and supporting those most in need, the Board unanimously agreed to rename one of the school’s scholarship programs in his honor.

“In recognition of your philanthropic and humanitarian support, the Board of Trustees of Miami Country Day School renames the Breakthrough Trustees Scholars to the Christopher N. Bellows Breakthrough Scholars.”

Head of School Award Chris was also recognized by Mariandl Hufford, President and Head of School, with the Head of School Award for Unselfish Service to the MCDS Community.

“There are few people who have served our School as selflessly and altruistically as this year’s recipient of the Head of School Award. Patient, kind, optimistic, and unwavering in his support of our School, he remains steadfast in turbulent times - and even in my short tenure, we have experienced a few of those. His unruffled demeanor has given me strength and confidence exactly when I needed it most.

Ultimately, his calm is the inevitable result of his fundamental belief that this is a great school that will long endure. With people like him on board, there is no doubt in my mind that this is true.

Personally, I have felt his support throughout my time with the School. There were times when I realized that he intervened on my behalf without telling me he had done so. For it was never about getting credit, but always about doing what was right - precisely because it was the right thing to do. And that is, simply stated, the essence of the man. His integrity, his profound commitment and lasting service to this School.”

His calm demeanor, keen mind, and strategic forethought were always exhibited, even in the face of certain difficult issues which faced our School. His quick wit and humor are not often revealed, but I attest to its existence.

Always involved and supportive of School events, his busy career never hindered his ability to be on campus. As our School evolves under new leadership, his continued involvement is sincerely welcomed.

Chris grew up in Miami and attended Miami Edison High School. He graduated from Sewanee – the University of the South with Honors, and from the University of Miami School of Law, J.D., Magna Cum Laude.

At UM he was named a Paul B. Anton Scholar.

He was a member of the University of Miami Law Review and Order of the Coif. He is an appellate attorney who has handled complex civil appeals in the Supreme Court of Florida, all Florida District Court of Appeals, and the federal appellate courts. In September, Chris was honored as the Best Mentor Honoree in the Daily Business Review Professional Excellence Award; he is included in the Best Lawyers in America guide, Appellate Practice, 2010-2021 and in the Florida Super Lawyers magazine, 2011-2020; and was recognized in the Martindale-Hubbell AV Preeminent Peer Review.

JOHN F. “BUD” FARREY NAMED TRUSTEE EMERITUS

There is not a space or place built on the current campus that doesn’t have the fingerprint of John F. “Bud” Farrey. This includes the most recent addition of the Center for the Arts, and earlier campus facilities such as the Michael J. Franco Upper School Complex, the Koch Family Athletic Complex, and the Katherine E. Franco Center for Learning Resources. In addition, Bud and his wife, Maria, have generously supported the school’s capital projects over the years with their personal donations.

For 33 years Bud Farrey served Miami Country Day School humbly and generously with his time, expertise and resources. During those years he served as Treasurer, and chaired the Finance Committee and over 20 years, chaired the Building and Grounds Committee.

It was fitting that he was the well-deserving recipient of the Headmaster’s Award for Unselfish Service to the MCDS Community in 2018-19.

Bud and Maria, believed there were individuals who made contributions when their daughter, Amanda, was beginning her school experience in the 80s, and Amanda benefitted because of those gifts made by others. Bud recalled the old cafeteria that was part of the former Lower School quadrangle and during her first years at the school the Garner Center was finished. He noted that there were many individuals who set examples for them as a young family and made significant impacts on the campus for the benefit of their daughter and many other students and teachers. People like the Garner family, Mike Franco, Durand Fisher, Stanley Whitman, and Jean McArthur Davis.

They set the example and inspired their family to do that for the next generation.

These were wonderful years of growth and development on campus under Bud’s leadership. In his letter of resignation from the Board, Bud shared that his many years affiliated with Miami Country Day School were among his happiest memories.

Stepping into Bud Farrey’s shoes as the Chair of the Building and Grounds Committee was somewhat daunting, given the significant imprint the committee had on Country Day during Bud’s tenure in steering the development of the Franco Center and the Center for the Arts. I admire Bud’s ability to attack every challenge with professionalism and grace and I will continue to apply the lessons gained from his leadership as we move forward into the future with further development at Miami Country Day.

2019-2020 BOARD OF TRUSTEES

The Board of Trustees are the guardians of Miami Country Day School’s mission to educate the whole child and inspire our children to develop their intellectual, physical, aesthetic, social, emotional and spiritual potentials by valuing every student every day.​ The Board meets five times a year to review and approve strategic proposals that are relevant and vital to our school community, as well as to monitor the success of the school in fulfilling its mission. ​ At the Annual Board Meeting, the Committee on Trustees proposes and prepares qualified candidates for election. ​Elected members serve our institution for three years. Each member may serve up to two terms, however, a unanimous decision of the Executive Committee would allow the member to serve additional terms.

CONNY AND MATTHIAS NIXDORF STELLA ’19; LUKE ‘22

As the school community was being impacted by the pandemic, Conny and Matthias Nixdorf recognized that some of our families would be affected. As they have so many times before, they followed their hearts and reached out to offer their support. It was their generosity that established the Spartan Relief Fund in April 2020.

Today, their gift encouraged others to do the same and our Spartan Relief Fund has over $234,000 supporting 29 families. This fund provided temporary financial support for those who faced significant change in their financial situation due to the pandemic and assisted with covering some tuition expenses.

In the face of uncertainty and challenge, compassion and community helped us shift into our current reality and the Nixdorf Family’s heartfelt compassion and leadership to establish the Spartan Relief Fund kept our community together.

Conny and Matthias Nixdorf with their children, Stella and Luke, joined the Country Day community in 2009 when they moved to Miami permanently from Germany. They have been involved in the advancement of the school in every way including technology and innovation, the arts, and Gateway Scholars. Stella graduated in 2019 and Luke will graduate in 2022. The Nixdorf Family also hosted several exchange students so they could have the Country Day experience.

Matthias served on the Board of Trustees from 2012-2018 and continues to serve on the Finance Committee. In 2012, when interviewed as a trustee, Matthias shared that he and Conny were committed to helping the school strive to be the best it can be and to help support the school wherever needed, with time, expertise, and philanthropy. He said the words commitment, improvement, hope and sharing, represent how they try to live their lives every day.

“Today, we still believe that educating children at every age through a variety of experiences encourages them to think in different ways,” said Matthias. “Country Day provides children with many opportunities that may open their eyes to different perspectives and that’s why we believe in donating to the school.”

The Spartan Community of Miami Country Day School has benefitted in so many ways from the Nixdorf’s commitment to help the school be the best it can be.

The 24th Annual Holiday Bazaar hosted by The Parents’ Association on November 11-12, 2019 was the largest parent fundraiser of the year. In 2019-20, our Parents’ Association donated $205,500 to the school to support the Spartan Relief Fund, Athletics, Drama, Dance, Music, ACES, College Guidance, and Technology. The 20th Annual Walk for Cancer is the school’s largest student-run service event. Hosted on October 12, 2019, the school raised over $60,000 for cancer research. In the 20 years that MCDS has sponsored the Walk, over $850,000 has been raised to support the Heidi Hewes Chapter of the Woman’s Cancer Association at the University of Miami and The Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.
