My name is Mia Daniel, I am a fourth-year student at Virginia Commonwealth University seeking a Bachelor’s Degree in Interior Design. From a young age, I had been exposed to various styles of architecture and design from traveling as a military child. I was born in Honolulu, Hawaii but raised in Okinawa, Japan until the age of seven. I experienced Japan’s innovative and technological framework before moving back to the United States and bearing witness to America’s traditional brick and mortar staple. My interest in art stems from my mother, who I carefully watched as she created still life drawings through my upbringing. Her love for art passed to me, however, it developed into a curious state towards the understanding of space design and functionality. As I grew older, I would often be found redesigning and organizing my bedroom layout several times a year. I had valued efficient and thoughtful design choices, which became the foundation in my work still to this day. I had a natural tendency to re-imagine and create exterior and interior sketches. This led me to learning what architectural and interior design is really about and the prospect of pursuing a career in this field of work.

My design process always starts with a user and site analysis. I strongly aim for all of my design choices to be conscious of who and what will inhabit the space. Considering this through the entire design process really helps me to ensure each of my works contain highly efficient ideas. I believe a space can exist without a user, however, it’s the user that gives the space meaning to its existence. After gathering the information from my analysis, I focus on creating a concept that inspires the built-in space, the furniture and finishings. This repeated process led me to finding a common theme throughout my projects. This being a focus on multi-functional pieces and overlapping dedicated areas to give the illusion of an open floor plan. Another aspect I encourage myself to consider in my choices is research and knowledge. By using research, it helps me to better understand several components in my work. Some of these being site history, material sustainability, and space utilization. From this, I instill knowledge into my designs that could positively impact the space on a physical and mental level through the use of storytelling methods.

Design is not just an approach to solving problems, but rather is also a way to share meaningful stories. Design is in every aspect of life and affects how we live our lives daily. As I continue my studies and furthermore, as I share my ideas with the world, I hope to inspire other designers and architects to create spaces that are not only creative, innovative, and authentic, but with the human experience in mind to create something that is life changing. I am extremely grateful to be part of a design community that emphasizes on all of this in their teachings and look forward to finding other design communities that all and all, focus on a better tomorrow.

DESIGN STATEMENT This design intends to create a space for a multidisciplinary wellness spa owned by a sport psychologist, who wants to extend her passion from caring for athletes to everyone to enhance everyday life performances.

CONCEPT STATEMENT The concept of this design is to wrap every client in a warm embrace. The space showcases different architectural elements that create feelings of soothing compression, similar to a hug.

Stemming from the first translation of the word ‘hug’ which means to emotionally comfort another in Old Norse, the materiality gives the nod to Scandinavian design which focuses on simplicity, functionality, and minimalism while using a majority of natural materials and earth tones.

PROJECT SITE The site of this design is intended for a 2000 SQ FT storefront unit part of the William Mullen Law firm building. The location of the site is 200 South 10th Street in the Downtown Central Business district of Richmond, Virginia.

A A:RECEPTION The reception is each client’s first impression of the spa. This area features a large stone wall and wood paneled wall that curve into each other at the top with a twelve light chandelier in the middle. This space offers seating for new client consultant and two retail displays.

This space is separated from the reception will curtains to offer clients waiting for open rooms.

It also features a large stone retail display and a skylight looking into the terrarium located on the mezzanine. Before heading to any rooms, clients will go through a tunnel of waves above their heads. This is intended to create a calming and relaxing atmosphere before clients start their experience at the spa.

The bathrooms and lockers would be the first place the clients go to after checking in at reception. The spa offers three bathrooms with one to ADA requirements. Each client would get a personal locker during their visit, located between the service rooms and bathrooms at the beginning of the hallway that features overlapping arches.

A:SERVICE ROOM The spa contains three service rooms each designed with colors of the brand, including green, blue, and beige. The rooms feature high ceilings and dim light to create a calm and relaxing environment. This space offers storage for equipment and towels.

The sauna is intended to be a public amenity in the wellness spa. This space can accommodate up to six clients at once.

The heated pool is another public amenity in the spa. It’s intended to be an experiential space. Before reaching the pool, clients will enter a vestibule for their towels and robes.

Then, the clients will walk down three small platforms before being in the water. This space was designed to offer the user another connection to nature. This is inspired by floating in a pool under the vines in a rain forest. This space also features a mosaic tile wall. Half of the wall is round tiles while the other half would be LED lights to resemble bio-luminescent plants.

A:PRIVATE OFFICE This office would be used by the company owner. It offers space for daily use and can accommodate having two additional people for meetings. The curtain walls create privacy while allowing for visual connection between the owner and employees. This space also has view to the ground floor for easy supervision for the owner.

B B:BREAKROOM The break room is for employees only. This area contains a small kitchenette, different seating options, personal storage, and a bathroom. It also features a terrarium to increase visual privacy between clients and employees. It provides employees with a connection to nature in a work environment.

DESIGN STATEMENT This design intends to create a space for the inclusive retail brand called Tree Naturals. Tree Naturals is a local Richmond company specializing in producing safe and non-harmful hair products. Predominantly catering to curly-haired individuals, this brand also offers various product options for all hair types.

CONCEPT STATEMENT The concept of this design centers around community. The space is broken into four key elements including, a gathering space, a market space, a learning space, and a maker’s space.

PROJECT SITE The site of this design is intended for a 1400 SQ FT storefront, previously home to Hickok Cole’s Richmond design office. The location of the site is 20 East Broad Street on the southern edge of the Jackson Ward neighborhood in Richmond, VA. Known for its African American heritage, Jackson Ward was a thriving center of black commerce and entertainment in the late 19th and early 20th century.

A A: R E C E P T I O N A R E A Upon entrance, clients would see Tree Natural’s slogan, “Hey curlfriend!” before seeking help among the store or checking in with an employee for an appointment or class.

B:WAITING AREA This area offers a flexible and open seating area for clients. It also showcases a light box that features the company founders. This space can be used for client consultation, meetings, or be changed to more display area.

The salon is defined as the learning and market area. Clients can learned from the stylists about products and different hair styles. This brand encourages their users to learn about natural ingredients and offers several manuals. This area can be used for private sessions, retail display, and hair lessons for all ages.

This wall is intended for product display. The center panel would be used for free samples, while the other displays offer different variations for organizing retail. The framework directly curves to connect with the salon area of the store. This gives the stylist easy access to showing clients what products the store offers ad can demonstrate how they are use.

MARKET AREA

This area is intended for public and private use. It offers several small work areas and a collaboration space. Employees can craft company products, hold team meetings, and teach small classes in this space. It also features large storage components, a whiteboard, and a custom tree shaped light fixture.

DESIGN STATEMENT This design is based on my initial perspective on the artwork “Safety Patrol” by Bisa Butler. I found the piece conflicting as the message focused on protecting black children in today’s society. As a person of color, I felt loved by the beautiful content and enraged that this message has to be continuously repeated. As generations suffer from traumatic history, this room is dedicated to healing.

CONCEPT STATEMENT The concept of this design is focused on healing your inner child by combining several therapeutic methods and theories with child-like aspects. The space contains various experiential elements including a cocoon swing, a zen garden, a wave LED light fixture, a plant wall guest book, and a vibroacoustic sensory bead pit which combines music therapy and touch therapy.

The space layout is divided using color therapy. Red is the bathroom.

An area dedicated to energizing mood. Yellow is the bead pit and zen garden. An area dedicated to stimulating. Green is the plant wall guest book and cocoon swing. DESIGN STATEMENT This design is intended to provide temporary housing for two natural disaster survivors. Several elements in the unit will be able to be taken with the occupants when they leave. This includes a collection of multi-functional screen walls.

CONCEPT STATEMENT The concept of this design stems from the idea of a bird’s nest. Being conscious of the survivors’ mental and emotional state, the unit offers a modular and open floor plan. The screen walls are intended for various use including storage, activity, privacy, and visual and physical connection.

This screen wall is mainly used to separate the entry and bedroom area. It also has components for open and closed storage along the side and lower half of it. It accommodates for hobbies/interests including reading, planting, and or aquaplaning.

This screen wall is placed in this space to be used as narrow open storage for the kitchen area. However, with its light structure, its easily modular to increase the flexibility of space. It can also be used for decorative purposes or to create a plant panel.

This screen wall is another modular piece in the unit. It accommodates for everyday use by having a pull out desk, open storage, and a glass cabinet. The cabinet has LED lights installed and the glass doors can be removed to be changed into shelving. Its shown being used as a plant box but can effortlessly be set as a work/study space, vanity space, and/or hobby space.
