CLASS OF 2021 - WINNING MOMENTS
Lady Blue Devils win it all, 7A state basketball champs Kendall Gazaway Section Editor The girls basketball team brought home the 7A State Championship title after beating Woodstock High School 52-47. Fans lined the 2.2 mile stretch of Whitlock Avenue from the highschool to the Marietta Square with posters and balloons cheering in support as the team left for the Macon Coliseum. As they traveled towards I-75, Marietta police blocked intersections while leading the caravan with Marietta fire. “It was a great feeling to see the community come out and support us before going off to play in the state championship game. The support played a major role in our victory,” Ajia Smith (12) said.
Coach Derrick DeWitt admitted he was concerned about the long travel time but those were minor concerns. “I was so confident in our preparation and our Marietta players,” DeWitt said. He reminded his team to play “together with soul,” to show “who we are and what we do,” and to remember “this is a business trip, and after the win is a field trip.” His goal was to settle the team down and play with a relaxed intensity, as they had practiced every day. “People listed us as the underdogs but we pulled together as a team and showed the world who the real state champs are,” Makayah Harris (10) said.
