Digital Twins: Replicating the World of Tomorrow

BY: AHMAD CASALIN

It contains the performances of both production and product The digital twin is an input and output process where you input the data or source and let it present you with a virtual one, at the input stage you can see the status of the model improve performance The said product can develop improvements by analyzing customization models and ensuring product quality through performance testing in real time

Imagine a world where everything is a replica of another, a world where in just a click, in just a few seconds, a copy of a product emerges This is made possible by an invention proposed and introduced by Michael Grieves in the year 2002 called, "Digital Twins" Will this invention prove to be useful?

When we say “digital”, we first think about a representation of the real world copied into a “high tech” one A Digital Twin uses real data to predict how the product or process will perform.

Robotic Surgeon: Treat Strokes with Joysticks

BY: KEIRA GRAVAMEN

With a joystick and a monitor, is surgery possible? Visualize yourself being in a surgery room, or a rural area, with absolutely no doctors in sight, and you just fall down with stroke from the harsh sun You start losing hope of seeing another day

What if I tell you that surgery can be performed even if doctors are in another hospital or miles away? Yes, that is now possible with the newly invented, Joystick-operated robot, surgeons can treat stroke remotely

Introduced on the April 2022 by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Engineers, this joystick-operated robot allows an easier and safer way of performing surgery on stroke or aneurysm patients Patients who experience a stroke have a “Golden Hour” which is the critical period after stroke onset Patients need immediate help to minimize damage to the brain

However, this is not possible for people living in remote areas as they do not have access to experienced doctors to perform manual wire endovascular surgery as this takes years for a surgeon to master That is why the MIT Team envisions their invention being installed in rural hospitals and remotely controlled in larger medical facilities So how does this modified joystick work? Can it possibly save the lives of many?

There are many benefits of digital twin depending on when and where they are going to be used For example, by using digital twins to monitor existing products, we will be able to further improve this product for the benefit of the people

Digital twins can also be used for prototypes ahead of manufacture, reducing product defects and shortening time to market this prevents labor-intensive work

Other common benefits include increased availability through monitoring and simulation to

Many are wondering if they could use this technology for business They can, however, concern from most business owners interested in this technology is the risk of misrepresenting the object or system they want to replicate which can cause disruptions and damage to a factory and the workers, leaving a mess to clean up The fruits of science and technology live side by side with us into making our world better Even so, we should always remember that “Technology is both a tool for helping humans and destroying them This is the paradox of our times,” as said by Frank Herbert, author of Dune

The Second-Generation of The World's Most Advanced Humanoid Robot - Ameca is Here To Say Hello

BY: AHMAD CASALIN

Human-kind evolution when it comes to technology has truly come far, from creating bulky telephones and televisions to nowmaking a robot with human-like features One of the robots invented today is named Ameca, and was inspired by many robotbased films of Hollywood and Bollywood production It is indeed great to see such innovations come to life, however, can robots like Ameca change our world, to be better? Or is it the other way around?

‘Engineered Arts’ is the UK’s leading designer and manufacturer of humanoid entertainment robots and is the face behind the production of ‘Ameca’, the “World's Most Advanced Human Shaped Robot representing the forefront of human-robotic technology” according to CES 2022 It has been specifically designed as a medium for the development of future robotic technologies and to perfect robot-to-human interaction The Engineered Arts thought through developing Ameca in 2005 and was planning how she would help future generations Throughout the years of testing and updating Ameca’s function, she is now ready for public entertainment

The researchers showed through a “phantom”, a transparent model with vessels replicating the complex arteries of the brain With just an hour of training, selected neurosurgeons were able to remotely navigate a wire through a giant maze of vessels to reach the target locations which have the blood clot, to remove it and get the blood flowing naturally again By tilting the joystick, the surgeons can control where the wire goes through a magnetic responsive tip, and buttons on the mouse control a set of motorized linear drives, which advance and retract the wire to make it move forward and back The team tested the robotic system in MGH’s Catheter Lab an operating room with standard medical imaging equipment used in endovascular procedures There, they tested the invention and saw how effective it was It can easily pass through hard-to-reach areas in the model, vessels, and sharp turns to reach regions of clots Once they retract the wire, the blood clot is successfully removed The primary purpose of the magnetic guidewire is to get to the target location quickly and safely so that standard devices like microcatheters can be used to deliver therapeutics,” Kim says He also said that their system is like a pathfinder and it shows This invention does not only help patients but also surgeons who are highly exposed to radiation from X-ray imaging That is why having the surgeons in another room, using a joystick and a monitor to perform surgery would be highly beneficial This Telerobotic Neurovascular with Magnetic Manipulation proved once again the significance of science and technology in our daily lives, especially to our health

Given that stroke is one of the leading causes of death and long-term disability in our world, having this invention made by the MIT Engineers would surely lessen doctor’s fatigue and stroke patient's death The impact of this invention on global health will be life-changing The real question is, when will we see a surgeon treating stroke with joysticks in hand here in the Philippines?

Ameca is able to emulate human expressions quite well and answer all questions articulately She was particularly designed to entertain people in any way she can She can blink, cry, and scrunch her nose just like humans do Ameca is a cloud-connected platform that multiplies the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) with an artificial body where AI and machine learning systems can be tested and developed alongside Engineering Art’s powerful tritium robot operating system Continuous improvement and production of Ameca can help people with disabilities, old people left in daycares, and more by entertaining them, and helping them daily Faster production of goods may also be achieved by robots working in factories, as they only need to be charged and they will follow all orders of owners, as they are mindcontrolled

While some people thought Ameca was fantastic, others thought it was alarming and expressed concern that it may lead to a cyber revolt and robot uprising like we ' ve seen in the movies Furthermore, Elon Musk has recently expressed concern about the risk of AI in terms of how human we want our robotic counterparts to be Some of us like Musk may be concerned about what our future will look like when the intellect is combined with a flawless human appearance Robots can pose a threat to us, lack of jobs and opportunities, and an unhealthy lifestyle may await us That is why we should not let technology take over our lives
