LOOKING AHEAD

Wrestling Restarts After Key Seniors Graduate Wrestling is a misunderstood sport. The mentality and physical endurance needed for this sport, no, lifestyle, is endless. With every new school year, we have people filtering out of the high school, seniors moving onto higher ends of education and/or taking their first steps into being an adult and our little Frosh finally becoming pre-adults.

With last year’s senior class, we have lost three key seniors that have bolstered our wrestling program over their four years of being here at MHS, Tiger Paasch, Jered Sublet and Bryce Branson. Yes, I have to admit that it will be an interesting season after going undefeated last year, another major success and another notch in the belt of our beloved “Coach K,” Shawn Keinonen.

But from the ashes, another year is born. And with this year’s season coming to light very soon, we have many younger, but very adequate and willing boys fill in these Keegan Cassidy mighty big shoes with a smile on their faces. Bobby Crowston, John “JT” Barnes, Dalton Donaldson, Vincent Williams, Manny Humlie, Stephen Weant and a new addition, JT’s younger brother, Brian Barnes.

He is known by the guys in the room, but not entirely by the student body. Grabbing a national championship while in middle school and practically winning every tournament he went to while I wrestled my freshman and sophomore year. This new face is as tough as bricks, but has a good and genuine heart, which is what every coach looks for in a wrestler.

I’m excited to see what this season has in store. Pay attention to the Barnes brothers this year; they are up-incoming champions of the sport. Good luck boys. We all have your back.

On June 8, 2013, Bryce Anderson’s radius and ulna were compound fractured. The bone pierced the skin leaving the lower half of his forearm hanging perpendicular to his arm. He had to have a surgery performed on his arm and they placed a metal bar to help stabilize the break. Anderson was then informed by his doctor that he would be unable to return to play for 18 months.

Anderson began the recovery and progressed rapidly. “The main aspect of my recovery was rebuilding the muscle that the bone tore through,” said Anderson. And even though his bone is healing far ahead of schedule, he had to sit out football season.

Anderson was a starting receiver his junior year and as a sophomore he played on varsity, as well. So, this football season was a little different. Anderson had to sit out of this football season and observe. He said, “Well, every game is hard to watch but it gets progressively less hard. It is nice to see my best friend Darby [Ramos] come in and fill my spot well.”

He looks forward to this basketball season and he is excited about how they will do this year. While many would have accepted the 18 months as set in concrete, Anderson worked to be able to play basketball this winter and he thinks that the injury might have even helped him as a player and teammate.

Anderson said, “I think coming out of it I am a far more effective player than I was before the injury because now I have one shot at playing at the next level, which gives me a tremendous drive.”

Anderson has a positive outlook on his injury. He said, “Having a robot arm makes me like Will Smith in iRobot so, in the long run it is going to help me.”

How “Green” is MHS?

Many students don’t realize how much of an impact their environmental decisions affect the earth. McMinnville High School has many positive environmental attributes, but also has a multitude of things that could still be done to reduce our environmental footprint.

Being such a large school, naturally, there is varied knowledge of the environment throughout McMinnville High School.

To resolve the separation between students and their environment, the student body should take responsibility for our waste and know what can be recycled. “[We need to make] recycling part of the culture.

Having bins visible and accessible is a good reminder, and if near the trash can then students often remember that there is an alternative to throwing away items that can be recycled,” said science teacher Beth Ann Kramer.

Biking or walking is also a great way to reduce your environmental footprint while getting a bit of exercise in as well. In the classroom, be aware of you paper consumption; don’t pull out a new sheet unless you need it and always use the backs of papers.

“Students should keep in mind that [being ecofriendly] is not just for me, or my school, it is for the environment… it has to be their decision,” said Environmental club president Angela Hernandez Additionally, MHS would have a drastically positive effect on the environment by putting a composting system in place. Composting is a natural way of recycling plant waste that, through biological processes, forms into fertilizer. “We should think big picture and get McMinnville to follow suit with what Portland is doing to compost food waste,” said science teacher Laura Syring.

Portland public schools offer a program where students are able to educate themselves about composting and have the option to compost during lunch. After lunch, the food scraps are then taken to a composting dumpster on school grounds and is maintained by Waste Management.

Although there are some changes that would be beneficial to the environment, MHS has some respectable programs and philosophies that inspire students and staff to care for the environment.

For example, Environmental Club collects recycling from classrooms every Tuesday and is busy planning an earth week that is aimed at informing people on how to be ecofriendly.

The club is also becoming informed themselves by “establishing committees to focus on specific issues that individual students are passionate about, such as sustainable food, reducing plastic use, buying local products, and biofuels,” said Kramer.

Outside of environmental club, many students opt to bring a reusable water bottle instead of buying a plastic one, saving money and being environmentally cautious simultaneously.

“This year I’ve seen a huge impact [on the environment] just by people bringing their own water bottles… it’s amazing to see what Grizzly students are capable of,” said Hernandez.

As poet and environmental activist Gary Snyder once said, “Find your place on the planet, dig in, and take responsibility from there.” Going green does not mean your entire life needs to be radically altered, but does include taking responsibility for your environmental footprint and partaking in simple steps to change it.

Although MHS has made a reasonable effort, there is still a long way ahead until we can become a sustainable, eco friendly, community.

GIRLS SOCCER HONORS #1 FAN The MHS girls’ soccer team made t-shirts and dedicated a game to Michelle Khatewoda, the late mother of junior Makayla Khatewoda. They, along with the softball team, also made t-shirts in memory of Michelle and her support to the the teams. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Khatewoda family.

NO SCHOOL NOVEMBER Students and teachers look forward to three long weekends this November, with only 15 school days for students. Between inservice days, Thanksgiving, and conferences, the weekend becomes a time to catch up on homework, sleep, and spend time with family and friends while enjoying the beautiful fall weather.

TIME FOR MOSH PIT TO GO Although seniors look forward to the Homecoming senior mosh pit as a symbol of moving forward, several injuries occur each year. It is out of control. We advise that this year’s juniors meet as a class and end the mosh pit and replace it with a still exciting, safe new tradition.

SOAR NOT SHOWN Live at the Blackbird is not being shown in many classrooms during its scheduled time which limits student access to the hard work of their peers. On another note, so far this year Live at the Blackbird has been producing high-quality programs that cater to what students want to hear.

LAST BRUIN ISSUE The Bruin will no longer be producing print issues for the remainder of the year due to drastic ASB budget cuts. The student body will not see Winter Formal, Mr. Mac High, prom, or winter and spring sports covered in the print Bruin this year. Student Depression: The Epidemic

Depression is a largely untreated epidemic in teens that has reached levels that are too high to deny. As many as 20 percent of teens will have depression before they reach adulthood- if you do the math that’s about 400 people at MHS who will suffer from depression before they graduate.

Firstly, what is depression? There is often confusion about the difference between feeling depressed temporarily and clinical depression. Symptoms of clinical depression include difficulty concentrat-

IT’S REALLY ABOUT FINDING THE BALANCE FOR EACH PERSON. ing and making decisions, fatigue and decreased energy, loss of interest in favorite activities, and feeling hopeless, anxious, and irritable.

Most who have depression will suffer from it multiple times in their life, and the treatment process usually includes therapy, prescription antidepressants, and intense personal effort to get back to normal.

It’s not an easy process, and junior Kylie Nance knows more than her fair share about depression. Diagnosed with depression and anxiety in her sophomore

year, Nance said she discovered she might have depression in her health class.

“I was [already] in counseling for anxiety, and in January or February, towards the end of the semester we were doing our unit on depression and mental diseases,” said Nance. “[we were looking at] a list of the symptoms of depression, and I realized that I had quite a few of the symptoms.”

Common symptoms of depression are apathy, withdrawal from normal activities, slipping grades, and becoming increasingly or extremely introverted. “I just didn’t’ really care about anything and I [wasn’t able] to get excited about things.”

Nance also found changes in her sleeping habits and constant negative thoughts an indicator that she might have depression.

Nance talked to her therapist, who suggested she try antidepressants to settle the chemical imbalance in her brain.

However it took several months and three different medications to find a balance that worked for her. She saw a therapist weekly but stresses that treatment works differently for each person. “ It’s really about just finding the balance for each person,” she said. Counselor Nichelle Greene agreed. “It depends if you have insurance,” she said. “But there are many organizations designed to work on a sliding scale for families who don’t have insurance…[however] there are always places to go no matter what.”

Eventually, things started to click into place. Nance found a new therapist outside of town who prescribed her a different antidepressant. Though the road is far from over, she says things are looking up.

“At this point it is getting better, but there was a long road to get there.” she said.

DEPRESSION continued from page 6 She’s helped many students through the process, and knows how to help students who feel they might be depressed or have other mental disorders. “Seeking help and talking is a really good thing, and being able to identify that you need help is a good thing.” she said. “I think talking with parents is also good, but I know that can be really hard.”

She also suggests finding a healthy coping method for overwhelming moments of sadness or anxiety. “What can [you] do when you’re feeling sad, upset, frustrated to make [yourself] feel better? Figuring out those healthy versus unhealthy coping methods [helps a lot]. Could you go for a run? Could you write?

Figuring out those coping skills and especially ones you can do in school is extremely beneficial.”

Anyone who feels they or one of their friends is suffering from depression or suicidal thoughts should talk to a trusted adult. It could quite literally be the difference between life and death. “I get a lot of referrals from peers who are concerned about their friends.” said Greene. “Myself and all the other counselors are always resources for students and can connect you to that next step.”

Teacher Bethany Mason says that teachers are always a resource for students to go to. “It’s something that teachers are trained in, is to have a listening ear, but I think it’s a two way street of teachers being willing to [reach out to students] and students being courageous enough to ask for help when they need it.”

Greene added, “It’s important for anyone dealing with any type of mental health issues to know that they’re not alone.

They’re not the only one, and I know sometimes it feels that way. Know that there are people here who want to help you and it can get better.”

Where Does Your $45 Go? ASB changed the budgeting system this year, raising questions about how ASB money is spent Editor’s Note: On Oct. 17, ASB released the 2013-2014 budget. This year, fundraising money was deducted from club budgets. This had never had been done before and was not communicated to club advisers as required by ASB bylaws. The original budget sheet did not include ASB’s own budget, and that information was later requested by The Bruin. The Bruin requested the ASB open records from MHS bookkeeper, Christie Giddings. The story then developed into two weeks of overviewing documents and interviewing club advisers about the changes. The goal of the story has remained constant, which is to discover how the $45 of individual ASB funds is spent.The following budget numbers are based on the original Oct. 17 budget sheet given to club advisers. By Oct. 24, ASB discovered another $4,500 in ASB fee money. The money allocated to The Bruin on Oct. 24 after this discovery has not been accepted, as The Bruin believes that all clubs are entitled to a fair chance at allocation. Since that money has yet to be distributed, these figures are based on the original Oct. 17 spreadsheet.

by EMILY NEEL As registration rolls around every August, students are asked to voluntarily pay $45 in ASB funds. This money is meant to be used to benefit the whole student body and pay for clubs, sports and assemblies.

As of Sept. 5, 2013, 835 students bought ASB. Pacifc Conference League dues of $2,700 are paid.

Just over 22 percent of ASB funds are given to athletics, leaving about $33,275.68 to be apportioned by ASB. Athletic money is used primarily for team entry fees into meets and non-league tournaments, as well as meals and spirit bags for the athletes.

Athletic and activities administrator Mark Hinthorn said, “The ASB funds that the athletic department utilizes supports the student body in many positive ways and I’m appreciative of all the students and families that have bought ASB because that helps make these things possible.”

For ASB, the first requirement is to pay $150 to state and national leadership associations. From there, ASB decides how to divide the remaining funds to give to clubs, organizations and itself.

Due to a communication error, ASB believed that they had $24,900 to work with, and were recently informed of the remaining $4,500. The Bruin editorial board met with the elected ASB executive board, president Nathan Lausmann,

To clear the account at the end of the year, money from the ASB general account was transferred to cover the debt in both accounts.

Some see this new change in the budgeting process as a disincentive for fundraising. Equestrian Team adviser Reba Stoller said, “I did feel that the clubs who were willing to go out and work, via fundraising, were being penalized over clubs who did not put down any fundraising. If I had been less truthful I could have put a zero dollar amount expected from fundraising. Being penalized for working harder at fundraising definitely does not seem fair.”

Lausmann said, “When we have such little money to work with, we have to come up with a formula to make things work.” When asked how club advisers are reacting to the change, Lausmann said, “I have received no complaints whatsoever.”

Club advisers were not informed of this change prior to submitting proposals, and they were not given scheduled appointments with ASB to review them, as ASB’s bylaws require. In response to this, Lausmann cited that they were under a lot of strain to organize an early Homecoming.

Though the zombie movie genre seems to be completely overdone, it’s the one zombie movie that actually contains a worthwhile plotline. Even though it was predictable with no deep meaning, it still satisfied viewers.

Brad Pitt stepped out of his usual genre into the realm of sci-fi/horror. And, he looks really good in it.

The graphics were very impressive and gave viewers a realistic impression of a zombie apocalypse.

If you are looking for a cutting edge sci-fi film, this is definitely a movie worth checking out.

Lorde appeared seemingly out of thin air at the end of last school year, breaking into the music scene with her single “Royals.” It hooked listeners with an alternative, slow beat.

The fact that the singer released this single at 16-yearsold and just recently released her album “Pure Heroine” this Sept. further astounds listeners. Lorde captivates her fans with her deep, powerful voice and consistent beats with strong bass.

These beats, however, may be too consistent, with songs that sound very similar to one another. Though the lyrics of her songs are unusual, to say the least, they generally do not make sense and confuse those attempting to decipher any hidden themes.

Overall, her songs make little sense, she has the potential to come out with an even stronger album in the future due to her strong voice and talent at such a young age.

Homecoming was also the given reason that ASB Activities and Government submitted their own budget proposals on Oct. 23 instead of the due date of Sept. 20 that other clubs were required to meet in order to gain funding.

Because Stoller is not an MHS staff member, she was not immediately informed of her funding this year. She said, “I do believe communication could have been better... and perhaps it was for those club advisers who are on campus working as teachers as well. I was left out of that loop.”

In regards to the budgeting process as a whole, choir adviser Dana Libonati said, “There are a few frustrating things. It takes a month and a half before we get any funds allocated at all. That’s pretty normal, though. The budgets come down every year and we’re constantly working with less resources.”

According to the ASB bylaws, “each May, the student government requests and reviews proposals from all campus activity groups seeking a portion of the activity budget anticipated for the coming year.” This is no longer done, and ASB collects budget requests at the end of Sept.

ASB adviser Kerrie Savage said, “Most clubs are winding down at the end of the year and not anticipating expenditures for next year.

They [advisers] don’t know what they will need money for until the year starts.”

ASB has a specific process to follow in order to purchase anything.

Each homecoming committee group fills out an order, ASB treasurer Curtis Neilson checks to see if it is an appropriate use of funds, and then passes the order to Lausmann, who passes it to ASB adviser Kerri Savage. The students then make purchase and turn in receipts to both Savage and bookkeeper Christie Giddings. After the

ASB GOVERNING LAWS purchase is approved in a business meeting, the students are then reimbursed.

By the end of 2012-2013, the ASB Activities account was in debt by $1,479.77, and the ASB Government account was in debt $1,258.59 in 2011-2012. No other clubs funded

by ASB money overspent during these two school years. The money left over in each club’s account at the end of the year is rolled over into a general account for the following year. In order to balance the ASB Activities account in 2012-2013, money from this general account was used.

Model United Nations adviser Joe Crafton had some comments on the budgeting process. Crafton said, “I don’t see anything wrong with the budgeting process this year. For me personally, communication was good. The familiarity of the student body president and myself makes it easier.”

He said that he lost about $1,000 from the year before, but that “it will just be harder on the kids. It’s part of our process with group funding. You’re going to be up and down every year.”

Libonati said, “It’s [the budgeting process] as fair as it can be. I appreciate everything they do for us.”

He referenced to a decrease in Choir funding from the District, as well. In 2001, the District removed stipends for choir and the pit orchestras that perform in school musicals. The teachers that spend countless hours with students working on musicals no longer get reimbursed for their work.

Libonati said, “It’s all what teachers do for students.” He also mentioned the help Choir has received from public associations, such as the Music Boosters Association run by parents which helps Choir fund for trips and music.

As budget funds decline both in the District and in the school, Libonati said, “As a teacher, you do what you have to - you find a way to make it work.”

BUDGET BYLAWS FOR ASB 1. Governing Regulations

a. State of Oregon assigns the responsibility of distributing student registration funds to ASB government on behalf of ASB members

2. Source of Funds

a. The source of the ASB budget is student registration fees (collected from families each

August at registration).

b. When families elect to pay the $45.00 fee, they are purchasing ASB membership and all of its benefits

b. Distribution

a. Pacific Conference dues are paid

b. Ten dollars from each student goes to athletics

c. The remainder is set aside for student activities. A portion is held in the ASB Government ac

count to serve mid-year and special requests from activity groups.

3. Student Activity Budget Creation

a. Each May, the student government requests and reviews proposals from all campus activity groups seeking a portion of the activity budget anticipated for the coming year b. Proposals for allocations are evaluated on the basis of club membership, service to the school, and the intended use of the funds. c. Generally, each group may receive a base pay of $30.00 per student member, up to 50 members. d. In keeping with state regulations, the expenditure of student funds on food or clothing ben efiting only a small group is generally not approved.

1. For expenditures such as these, groups raise funds independent of ASB.

4. Activity Budget Fund Distribution

a. Funds are distributed to activity groups in the fall following scheduled appointments with club presidents and reviewing budget proposals and previous year’s expenditures. b. The governing body of that group is responsible for approving expenditures. c. All expenditures are also reviewed by the student government at weekly business meetings.

i. This review verifies that funds are being spent as itemized on the approved spring proposal.

ii. Should concerns arise, the ASB treasurer will approach the activity group advisor

for clarification, then reports findings to ASB for expenditure approval.

d.

Upon approval, all expenditures are submitted to our campus bookkeeper for distribution.

5. Mid-year Requests for Funds

a. ASB-recognized activity groups may request funds from the ASB Government account

b. To do so:

a. Obtain a fund request proposal form from the Leadership classroom

b. Present the request to ASB at a Business Meeting

c. Requests are considered using the same criteria employed during fall budget construction, and

as funds allow.

d. Common requests include registration to national events, field trips, significant equipment pur chases

6. Records

a. Record of all ASB accounts is kept by the ASB Treasurer, with assistance from the campus bookkeeper.

b. Minutes of weekly business meetings are saved on our ASB computer and available upon request

c. dvisors receive monthly statements of their accounts from the campus bookkeeper.

7. Account Rollover

a. At the end of the school year, usually by July 1, any money remaining in ASB accounts is trans ferred back to the general registration fund for redistribution.
