FOOTBALL SAFETY REGULATIONS INJURIES ON THE FIELD THIS FOOTBALL SEASON ARE A REMINDER THAT PLAYERS MUST TAKE PRECAUTIONS

Football has always been a great and fun American past time. Originating as far back as 1869, the sport has now become a game on a professional level called the National Football League.

Health issues arise in football due to a large amount of health risks caused by participating in the sport. Injuries are relatively common in football, due to it being a full-contact game. They occur during both practice and games. There are several factors that can affect the frequency of injuries. For example, epidemiological studies have shown older players can be at a greater risk, while equipment and experienced coaches can reduce the risk of injury.

Common injuries include sprains, fractures, dislocations, and concussions. Concussions have become a concern, as they increase the risk of mental illnesses like dementia and common brain damage. In the National Football League and National Collegiate Athletic Association, a public injury report is published containing all injured players on a team, their injury and the game-day status of each player.

There have been a numerous amount of equipment developed to reduce injuries. The football helmet serves as effective protection against more dangerous injuries like skull fractures. The modern helmet traces its roots back to the leather helmets used by football players in the early 1900s to protect themselves from head injuries. Helmets later evolved to be made of hard plastic, and a facemask was added to protect players from sustaining facial injuries.

Players are also required to wear mouth guards to prevent injuries to their teeth and tongues. Players wear a number of pads to protect themselves, including shoulder pads, thigh pads, hip pads, and knee pads. Additionally, quarterbacks wear flak jackets to protect their ribcage. Studies have shown that proper conditioning techniques, fitness and exercise routines, as well as high-quality equipment can reduce the risk of injury among players.

Teacher Audrey Wright returned to McMinnville High School this fall after taking a year off of teaching due to breast cancer. Wright is teaching two periods of AP Psychology and four periods of freshman biology. While she has three more rounds of chemo, Wright has been cancer free since February.

“I found the lump on July 31 and had a doctor’s appointment the very next day, July 31 of 2015, so it’s been about a year now,” Wright said. Having cancer isn’t easy, especially in Wright’s case with a young son. When asked what was the hardest part dealing with cancer was, Wright said, “I have a two and a half year old and just the thought that I might not be around for him, I’ve been putting videos on YouTube so he could still remember us together.”

“I DON’ T GIVE ANY CONSIDERATION TO LITTLE THINGS.” -AUDREY WRIGHT Wright’s presence was missed last year at MHS, and so students and staff bonded together to help out in any way possible. During last football season, pink shirts with Wright’s name were handed out to students at the game supporting a pink out. Junior Alli Robertson sold ribbons and raised money to donate to Wright. Robertson said, “she was really appreciative of the money.”

Throughout her battle Wright has managed to look towards the joyful things in life to keep her going. Wright said, “everyday I hurt less,” which is very encouraging to her. Wright also said that the thought of family was very important in keeping her spirits up. She missed teaching, “I miss the students.”

Wright has stepped right back into teaching without missing a stride.

Sophomore Angela Tiszkus, who is currently enrolled in Wright’s AP Psychology class, said, “coming into her class is the highlight of my day.” Robertson spoke fondly of her as having a very good personality describing her as, “really bubbly.”

While Wright’s family was a beacon of light from her during her hardest time, she continues to be a beacon of light for her students today. “It’s nice to have a quirky teacher that genuinely cares about us,” Tiszkus said. Both Tiszkus and Robertson continuously painted a picture of Wright as a loving and caring individual. Tiszkus said, “her class is like a little happy family.”

While her cancer is gone and she is seeing improvement every day, it’s still not easy for Wright. She said, “Physically, I’m still recovering from Chemo, so standing and talking all day is difficult.” Wright also has an agenda of activities she wants to do as she recovers. “I want to travel, and to volunteer.

I want to give back,” Wright said.

Wright continues to leave her legacy on MHS every day. “Hold on to things that bring value to you and let go of everything else,” Wright said.

With the fast pace of life it is easy to lose sight of your priorities. For many, life seems long and tedious but Wright has learned to seek joy out of every day and cherish those around her. “I don’t give any consideration to the little things,” Wright said.

Year after year the freshman class at McMinnville High School grows, and this year we are left with the largest class in history; over 560 freshmen now occupy the halls and woefully undersized and underequipped classrooms of Mac High.

Freshmen have to deal with each other and problems related to their class often but many don’t seem very bothered by it finding the silver lining in the situation.

“It feels more inclusive; there are more people to make friends with,” freshman Kaylani Kam said, “It’s cool to be part of a bigger whole.”

“The school is big enough for all of us,” freshman Annie Clayton said. “More teachers would be good, but that would be hard because of funding,” said Clayton.

While freshmen found good in their large numbers, other students were less optimistic, such as the case with previous freshmen Class president Bryce Abeln.

“The freshmen are the worst things that have ever been born,” Abeln said sarcastically. “They’re in the way all the time; they think they’re the greatest humans to have ever been born.” While Abeln exaggerated his feelings towards the class of 2020, many other students have similar opinions.

BAND STUDENTS SPEND SEVERAL HOURS ON SATURDAYS TO PRACTICE ON CAMPUS

MHS’s own marching band will be taking on a new project this school year: competitive marching. After band director David Barton took over the band two years ago, he decided to introduce the band to competitions this summer. The band will spend this semester preparing for two competitions and five other performances this year.

“I’m very excited for the kids to see what it’s all about because this is very new for everybody.

These students have never competed; they’ve never gotten on a marching band field in front of that many people, and judges, and performed.

Everything we do is gonna be new, and it’s gonna be scary for them, but it’s gonna be a learning opportunity for them,” said Barton.

The band will be performing a three song set at competitions this year. Each performance will be judged by six judges, and the band will be placed in a division with 16 other bands of the same size.

“This year we chose an Olympic theme, so we chose three songs that all pertain to the Olympics, and it will kinda tell a story as it goes,” said Barton. “That’s how most bands do it; they have a production, basically.”

The band is being led by tuba players Alicia Barton, 12, and flute player Alejandro Lopez, 12.

Both have been involved in band since grade school and are excited to see the band take on the challenge of competing in the coming months.

Both seniors have noticed the same excitement among their peers.

“Everyone is very determined,” said Alicia Barton. “This is new for us, so we want to do it well.”

Lopez agreed, and stated that he hopes to leave behind a legacy for future band members to follow.

“All of us seniors want to leave a good first impression of our experience with competitions,” he said. “It keeps us motivated.”

The band started rehearsals at the end of August. They spent a week memorizing music, learning their drill, and completing their overall preparations for their competitive performances.

While the band made huge improvements during this week, they still have some work to do before their first competition.

“Their weakness is their lack of knowledge.

Knowledge and tradition go a long way in the marching band. They have no idea of dedication and commitment because they have no idea what they are getting into,” said David Barton.

“We probably have to do the most work on memorizing music,” said Alicia Barton. “We have our drill down pretty good though.”

David Barton also noted the significant strengths that the band possesses. He stated that the band is made up of great, hardworking kids who want to produce a good product.

Aside from competitions, the band is preparing for other performances and playing at sporting events this fall. According to David Barton, it’s the band’s job to support Mac High and be the “spirit” of the school.

“We should be playing everywhere, we wanna create a great atmosphere for the football games, and the basketball games, and everything,” he said. “Hopefully the program will continue to grow and we’ll support Mac High. That’s our job.”

According to David Barton, other students at MHS can support the band by participating in “band cheers”, going to watch the band, and cheering for them when they perform.

ASB/ACTIVITES MERGE MERGING THE ASB AND ACTIVITIES CLASSES ALLOWS FOR GREATER STUDENT OUTREACH AND EASIER COMMUNICATION

Everyone knows that ASB is the class that puts on Homecoming, and asseblies. Many people, however, did not realize that until this year, there were two separate classes that collaborated on all these events—the zero period club called “Activities” and the class during the day of ASB. This year, though, the classes have combined, forming just one zero period class called ASB. This class still does all of the same activities as in years past, just with a single massive class of 40 students. Sophomore Kimmy Anaya said, “I enjoy the big class because it allows for us to access more of the student population and to create a stronger community, which is what the ASB class strives to do.”

This year of change also brings about the role of an “at-large” representative, which is a relatively new position at Mac High. The at-large representative role was created to help bring in students who are intimidated by the election and interview process involved in attaining a more traditional role in the ASB class.

These “at-large” students are, according to class advisor Susanne Sayles, “students we see that are really heavily involved or students we feel like have a really good 6

voice.” These positions are recruited for by ASB advisors Sayles and Mitch Sechler, as well as being an application process, similar to the more traditional role of a representative.

Anaya, who is an “at-large” representative, shares about her position that, “My roles are essentially the same as the other representatives who had to go through the nerve-wracking interview process.” ASB president, senior Maria Martinez, added that, “The “at-large” representatives are basically students who were involved in Activities in years past, and when the classes were combined, they wanted to remain involved in leadership.”

It may seem as if the sheer number of students would create some logistical issues in the class, but Sayles doesn’t agree. “It’s great because we have 40 individual voices that are a really good representation of a lot of different clubs and activities here at the high school.”

President Martinez said, “It’s actually easier, because instead of repeating the same information to both Activities and ASB, you only have to say it once and everyone gets the same information at the same time.” She also added that, “Since many students in previous years were actually already a part of both classes, the transition to

one class was fairly easy.”

As the advisor, Sayles oversees the whole class and manages the students. She included, “It is a large class, but the combination of old and new leaders who all have similar personalities creates a really nice dynamic.” As a new student to the class, Anaya said, “I love the class.

The number of students doesn’t matter much, it just allows us to make more of an impact and develop more of a community.”

Sayles added that if anyone is interested in either a representative position or an “at-large” representative spot, applications will be available a few weeks before the end of first semester.

“Besides the application, it’s also just word-of-mouth, so we ask students who are already in the class to think of peers who would be a good fit in the class or need representation.”

Students who are interested in joining MHS leadership but are hesitant about the long election/interview process—now is your chance. Students can join the ASB class by picking up an application at the semester mark.

Most teachers finish their education when they leave college in pursuit for jobs as educators, but art teacher Christine Garrison recently made a trip to Venice, Italy in order to take her artistic skills to a greater level.

“I was in Venice for six weeks and the we just did a couple weekend trips to Florence, Italy,” said Garrison, “just getting to know the city- learning about it, as well as the artist that have worked in the city.”

Garrison said she took the trip because, “It had always been an ambition of [hers] even actually since [she] was in highschool to do some kind of study in Italy.” Many of us wish to go to other places for our education no matter what career we want, Garrison is just an example of the many

people that have actually accomplished her dream.

“I was taking a drawing and a painting course and so most of that class kind of entailed a working in the studio a lot and getting outside and drawing from life but then also making some museum gallery tours.”

Studying art “was actually one of the reasons that [she] actually chose the master’s program that I did.”

“I thought it would be an extremely beneficial and unique experience,” Garrison said, “just to study art in a place where it has you know been an important thing for the last couple thousand years.” You can’t visit a city- especially in Italy, without meeting some artists, “the ones that we met were actually more on the fashion side of things but

the ones that we studied were from the Italian renaissance,” she said.

Garrison was attracted to Europe not only for the education but also for the inspira-

“It was very inspiring to make art in a city where you just walk out the door and feel like you are in a painting.

It wasn’t that hard to carry a sketchbook around and be working a lot from what was all around me,” she said.

Giovanni Mariotti, an exchange student from Italy, is back for a second year here at Mac High. Most exchange students do not return, but Giovanni couldn’t resist staying another year,“I fell in love with Mac High.”

His main reason for coming back is swimming. “I train very well with my coach here, and hopefully I will [do well] enough to go to college. It would be a dream,” Giovanni said. He already has some colleges in mind, including University of Nevada Las Vegas, University of Wyoming, and University of Utah.

He isn’t the only one who’s happy that he could come back. Zoe Hayes, Giovanni’s host sister, said, “He’s really nice, and he fits well in our family. [My parents] were pretty excited for him to come back and he’s very funny, he always makes me laugh.” Zoe and Giovanni hang out, but she said that “Gio is closer probably to Max, just because they’re the same age and they were in a lot of classes together last year.”

Giovanni has known he was coming back since last May. “It was a decision that had to be taken earlier in order to [get a] visa because it takes 120 days to make. I had to make the decision before the beginning of summer,” Giovanni said.

Even though this is his second year here in the US, Giovanni said the school spirit still surprises him. “It is crazy; I come from a school where there are no sportsthere’s no nothing. School spirit doesn’t really exist so it’s always amazing to see,” he said.

Last year was his fourth year of high school, which is senior year in the US, but there are five years of high school in Italy. “Since we finish high school at the age of 19…this year I’m basically like a super-senior, even though I didn’t fail a class. It was just a compromise me and Vicknair found,” Giovanni said.

Giovanni has adapted well to American life, but still has quirks.

Zoe said that the funniest quirk Giovanni has is that “he always says words funny. I remember one time; he saw a sign that said Eureka and he said yur-i-ka. He just says things so funny. He says squir-ell.”

NEW ADMIN ON THE BLOCK VICE PRINCIPAL VERONICA CHASE JOINS IN HER FIRST YEAR AS AN ADMIN TO FACE CHALLENGES

With the new school year came a new admin team along with it, including one individual, vice principal Veronica Chase. “This is my second year at MHS, I was here last year as an instructional technology TOSA, teacher on special assignment, and this year was my very first year as an administrator,” said Chase, who has 11 years in education.

Although it’s early in the year, Chase spoke about her challenges so far, “The biggest challenges are not knowing what I don’t know, but the great thing is, everyone here whether it’s another administrator, a teacher, a student are so willing to fill me in on what I don’t know.” Even with Chase’s challenges, she voiced her feeling of success, “In separate meetings, we hadn’t even talked about it, we both had started out with successes, celebrations, Kelly Shipley called them today ‘triumphs,’ I love that.”

Vice principal Amy Fast expressed her gratitude towards Chase joining the admin team, “She’s a really good people person, she makes people really feel valued and invests time in getting to know them.” Fast also conveyed that, “Ms. Chase and I connected when we were instruc-

tional coaches... we had really similar philosophies about education and really similar ways we approached problem solving and education in general and so we were, I think,

Chase did say she had concerns about Homecoming, “I might be worried but no, our kids are, we have really good students here and really great staff and I know that they are going to make good choices... I chaperoned MORP so after that I’m not worried about Homecoming.”

This year’s summer hit movie, Suicide Squad, made a massive hit in the box office, making a profit of 640.1 million USD, and only having a budget of 175 million USD. Starring the famous actors Will Smith who played Deadshot, Margot Robbie who played Harley Quinn, Jared Leto who played the Joker, and Cara Delevingne who played Enchantress. Although it was a hit, some DC comics fans thought that Suicide Squad was a complete flop and had the potential to be much better.

Yu Zhang, 11, said, “Suicide squad is kind of in the middle. I was expecting more action and it’s not as exciting as I expected.” People and fans thought the movie was falsely advertising the Joker(Jared Leto) in the movie trailers, and some were upset that only

POP- “LEMONADE” BY BEYONCÉ Beyonce’s new album “Lemonade” hit the charts this year ranking first in top pop albums of 2016 so far. When asked about the new album, senior Nichole Teasdale said that, “It’s really interesting, but good” observing that Beyonce’s music has advanced throughout the years and that this album is very well put together. Teasdale’s favorite from Lemonade would have to be the sad but touching number, “Sandcastles.” Teasdale said, “If I was to have a woman crush every single day of my life it would probably be on Beyonce.” Looks like Queen B is still killin’ it.

RAP- “COLORING BOOK” BY CHANCE THE RAPPER Chance the Rapper’s new album “Coloring Book” appears to be raved about by many students at MHS, and Senior Sydney Stern seems to agree. Graciously labeling the album her favorite, Stern said, “The songs have a good message…” and that “They are light and happy.”

For a good mood tune, Stern recommends the song “All we got” with Kanye West. As for blue times, she likes “Same Drugs” (which is not actually about drugs).

Stern also points out Chance the Rapper’s kindness towards others, bringing up his plans to have a “coloring day” in the White Socks stadium in which he will be bringing in voting registration for his fans. It’s no surprise that Stern will be attending his concert in Seattle along

with other fans.

ALTERNATIVE- “REVOLUTION RADIO”

BY GREEN DAY Coming up on their twelfth studio album, Green Day’s music is described as both alternative, and punk rock. Senior Isabella Allen likes Green Day for their “cool style” and sometimes “electric feel”. Allen claims that her uncle actually made a song that inspired one of Green Day’s songs in a past album. Allen admits that her favorite Green Day songs are actually from their older albums.

She recommends Local Natives’ song “World News” and anything from the band “Passenger” for people who are into alternative music.

BY BRANDY CLARK Country music’s leading female singer of 2016, Brandy Clark, released a new album this June called “Big Day in a Small Town.” Senior Nathan Leid commends the album for its “mostly upbeat and fun to listen to” nature.

Leid describes Clark’s voice as “soft but gravelly” giving her the edge female country singers need to be successful in the industry. When asked why he likes to listen to country music, Leid says that it is “interesting to hear about life in the south compared to his here in Oregon” and that he enjoys the “stories the songs tell.”

a small portion of the movie, 15 minutes, actually featured the Joker. In an interview with Jared Leto, he states, “There were so many scenes that got cut from the movie, I couldn’t even start. I think that the Joker… we did a lot of experimentation on the set, we explored a lot. There’s so much that we shot that’s not in the film.”

Additionally, half of the movie was explaining and showing all the characters backstories, and which in turn minimized available time for action. There were too many characters involved in the movie, and if there were less characters, the whole movie would have made a better impact on the audience watching it. A lot of characters had no meaning or involvement in the storyline, such as the character Katana, who was played by Karen Fukuhara. Her character had no effect on the movie at all and she played a very small role in the movie.

Overall, the movie had great, abstract effects, and high quality acting from most of the characters.

The 2016 McMinnville High School Homecoming week was a huge success! As soon as the theme, The Olympics, was announced, there was a lot of excitement and preparation for both the teachers and students as decorations were put up and costumes were put together for each of the days.

Festivities kicked off on Monday with students dressing according to their favorite Olympic sport. Many sports were represented such as: soccer, basketball, volleyball, wrestling, swimming, and martial arts.

On Tuesday, students had a chance to show off their achievements by wearing medals from their previous matches or games. Also, with a little creativity, students also created fun medals with amusing titles.

On Wednesday, students could show off their countries’ pride by wearing colors, flags, or traditional clothing. It gave many students a chance to express their unique backgrounds, indicting Mac High’s diverse student body.

As the week drew to an end, on Thursday, there was a lot of participation for Toga Day. And finally, on Friday, it was Colors Day. With much excitement, each grade level dressed up as their appropriate colors as they represented their class along with their classmates. To kick off the assembly, the seniors 12

rushed into the gym and had a mosh pit right in the center of the gym.

With the school spirit off to a good start, the assembly began. Homecoming court was announced and the winners were recognized. ASB also prepared a lot of cool games and events for the students to participate in, but that wasn’t the end. The teachers and students also had a lip-sync battle that caused a lot of uproar as each participant showed off their lip-syncing skills.

After the assembly, the students gathered outside with floats representing each grade. With the color guard and band leading the parade, the whole student body marched through the streets with school pride and spirit. Finishing off at the stadium, each class had one more chance to show off their spirit and each sport and organization was given recognition.

To end the Friday night, hundreds of people were gathered in all black to support the football players in a match against McNary.

When asked about this year’s homecoming, there were many positive responses. “I thought it was really fun and I liked how they kept the traditions and I thought the senior float was really cool! The parade was super fun as well!” said Carmella Reynolds, a freshman.

“I think it was pretty cool. The theme was really cool

because we just had the Olympics and I thought that it tied in well with our homecoming,” said Sophie Gyenes, a sophomore. When asked about the mosh pit that the seniors did Gyenes commented, “It was really cool and I look forward to it my senior year.” Also, senior Juan Perez said, “I loved the mosh pit! It was so awesome and energetic! The only downside was when people started throwing wieners. I got a hotdog in the face but it was awesome! The mosh pit was probably the best part of everything!”

Many students also found out that at this year’s homecoming, they found more ways to participate and be a part of the school events and activities. “I actually really enjoyed it, I usually don’t. I mean, I’m just not really big on being social but I actually really enjoyed it this year. I liked the theme and it was really fun,” said Katie Hildebrant.

This homecoming event was something to definitely remember. Mac High has a lot of school spirit and pride and as grizzlies; the students do a good job representing their school wherever they go. “Homecoming was amazing, it was better than I had ever expected it to be.

It is probably one of the few events that I participate in socially, but it was the most amazing time of my high school career,” said Perez.

BOYS SOCCER IS THIRD IN NATION

On a typical weekday morning thousands of teenagers across America pull themselves from their beds, rub the sleep from their eyes, and place book-filled bags on their already-fatigued backs. But recently, studies urging schools to act in response to the epidemic of sleep deprivation among teens, have caused school districts in 44 states to delay their start times.

The alarm is being raised by the most qualified medical health professionals, specifically sleep specialists, all across the country.

Their concern is that teenagers aren’t getting anywhere near the recANNIE CHRISTMAN ommended nine hours of sleep they need to perform their best.

But the professionals aren’t pointing fingers at cell phones, excessive Dutch Bros. stops, or even teenage laziness. Organizations such as the American Psychological Association, the National Sleep Foundation, and the American Academy of Pediatrics say its early start times in middle and high schools that cause sleepy symptoms such as 60% of children under the age of 18 complaining about being tired during the day, and 15 percent falling asleep in class. Such organizations warn that if schools do not delay their start times, people age 14-24 will remain more sleep-deprived than any other sector.

states, starting earlier than 8:30 a.m., for a teenager to get their much needed nine hours, they would need to fall asleep at about 10p.m. every evening.

Studies, however, by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the Scientific American, and the Smithsonian have found that while younger children and full grown adults would be inclined to “call it a night” way before 10p.m., “adolescent’s circadian rhythms that control response to stimuli, and sleep patterns, operate differently.”

The teenage body is not inclined to produce Melatonin, the chemical that tells your body it’s time to sleep, until 11p.m.. Furthermore, the teenage body can only get quality sleep between 11p.m.-8a.m. In the words of Dr. Denise Pope of Stanford Graduate School of Education, “ . . . the teenage body is nocturnal.”

Fortunately, some schools across the country have taken this advice and adjusted their start times to meet their students’ needs. Nine thousand students across eight schools in Minnesota, Wyoming, and Colorado found that a delayed start time resulted in a boost in attendance, better test scores, higher grades in Math, English, Social Studies, and Science, and a decrease in tardiness, substance abuse, and depression among their peers.

Jackson Hole High School in Wyoming, found that an 8:55a.m. start time decreased the amount of car accidents among students by 70 percent, which should serve as a huge “wake-up call” to Districts who continue to force teenagers to sit in desks when they should be laying in beds.

After a disappointing loss in the Semi-Finals last fall, boys soccer is back this year and they are better than ever. The boys are currently undefeated and are currently on track to make another strong run at a state championship. We wish the best of luck to our boys and hope they make us proud!

HOMECOMING This year’s Homecoming was memorable and well-executed. The decorations lining the halls looked fantastic and created a sense of excitement and community within the school. ASB did an amazing job of creating lots of school spirit through the day-to-day activities, as well as the assembly, parade, game and dance.

STREAKER GETS CAUGHT At the pep rally after the Homecoming assembly, an anonymous streaker wearing only black underwear and a gorilla mask ran across the football field, gathering the whole student body’s attention. Luckily, the administration was able to track him down, including a golf cart chase by dean Cooper.

PARKING LOT CHAOS The Mac High parking lot is notoriously chaotic with hundreds of teenage drivers all trying to get in and leave simultaneously. This will be even worse starting in January when the parking lot size will be reduced due to construction, and some students won’t have anywhere to park.

BUNKER’S BIKE ACCIDENT Beloved psychology and economics teacher Mark Bunker was hit by a car while riding his bike on Evans street during lunch over Homecoming week. Bunker suffered a broken femur. He underwent surgery last week and will be out 6-8 weeks. Mac High hopes he has a speedy recovery and comes back soon!

On Sept. 16, the long-awaited iPhone 7 was released.

There was much speculation about what the changes from the 6/6s to the 7/7s would be, and now we know all the differences; whether for the better or worse.

A change that seems to be gladly accepted is that the iPhone 7/7s is waterproof. It can be underwater for up to 30 minutes, but don’t plan on swimming with it, because it can only withstand going down into three feet of water. Apple is finally catching up to competitors like Samsung and Sony who already have waterproof phones.

Another positive change is the new black shades on the phone. Available on the ZOE HAYES iphone 7/7s is a matte black color and a glossy black. Apparently, the colors are so black that you can’t tell where the screen and outer part of the phone meets.

One change that many people are unhappy with is the removal of the headphone jack. Apple is now selling wireless headphones, also known as AirPods; which cost $159!

WHAT TO EXPECT FOR MHS WITH THE NEW BOND

The Airpods are sold separately from the phones, so you would be looking at shelling out about $1,128 for the 256 GB iphone 7s plus the AirPods. I think that for a normal person, that price for a pair of headphones is insane. Also, the headphones need to be charged regularly. Each charge lasts for only 5 hours, but you can put multiple charges in the earbuds. The earbuds are small, and people are already complaining that they will be easily lost.

There are many changes to the camera too. Videos will be more stable, due to a sensor. The larger aperture lets 50% more light in to the camera, so photos and videos in low light will have higher quality. The front facing camera is clearer, and a feature called retina flash helps your selfies look better (important). The flash is brighter, and the zoom is clearer. Overall, all photos look much more professional.

There are mixed reviews on the new phone, but it did cause quite a buzz. The camera is much more professional now, and the phone is finally waterproof! But I think the AirPods are a total miss, and in my opinion, a deal breaker. Honestly, consumers must decide for themselves if the benefits outweigh the cost.

Since its passing in May, the school bond has been a buzzworthy topic. Rumors of doublestoried fitness centers, indoor tracks, and a lack of availability in parking spaces have been circulated.

Originally, that was why I had offered to take this story, excited to start the article with a headline in mind as guidance, something like, “School District Prioritizes Athletics Over Arts…

Again.” Despite how a two story fitness center would be ridiculously nice, frantic searching on the District website for whatever I could find about the changes discussed this summer was inevitable.

Until Sept. 21, I had been frustrated with the virtually nonexistent material I was working with, but the date eventually came, and the meeting was finally held, temporary agreements made, and results posted relatively soon after the conference.

The bond plan still encompasses the construction of a vocational/technical career center, and expansion off of the main building, as promised. This time, however the site plans were much less vague.

Supposedly, the construction is to happen in four phases. The vocational tech building, parking, bus lanes, expanded cafeteria off of the existing one, and updated entry security are included in phase one, starting this February and projected for completion by the following August.

Work on phase two will occur overlapping with phase one, from May to August 2017. This phase focuses on what principal Tony Vicknair mentioned in his interview for Live at the Blackbird: the renovation and repair of Baker Field.

This will introduce stadium lighting, seating, restrooms and an artificial field.

Phase three is unclear based on the diagrams and description, simply “repair and renovation”.

This is scheduled for May 2018 to August 2018.

The fourth and final phase from June 2018 to Aug. 2019 is for addition to the existing building, demolition, and construction.

So it seems that the three years of activity and change will be chaotic, but will hopefully prove to be worth it. To add to the list of hopes, here’s to hopeless wishing that the floating stairs depicted in the activities lobby will materialize. Thank you voters (and please help with the floating stairs).

GRACE LEE DISCUSSES THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECTS OF COLLEGE APPLICATIONS THAT SENIORS SHOULD FOCUS ON

Going to college after graduating high school is a great experience.

Being able to become an independent person, make decisions without parents, take classes that are interesting, hang out with friends, and getting to go to college parties and outings are only a few things that people like to imagine as they start to think about their own futures.

Many students start very early in preparing themselves to become the best candidate they can become.

Starting as early as freshman year, taking extra care in grades and taking part in school activities are ways that people start to create a profile of their achievements.

Although college is a big part in getting into a desirable work field, the competition is fierce for high school students as millions of applicants fight for the attention of college admissions officers.

SAT, ACT, and various other test scores are sent in, in hopes to meet the requirements and hours are spent in front of a computer, trying to write the perfect essay in less than 600 words while others might be filling their applications with extra-curricular activities, sports, and volunteer work that they had done during their high school career, hoping that the work they have done will make them stand out from the other applicants.

There are many ways to stand out to colleges but what is the factor that people focus on most?

Millions of students around the world spend hundreds of dollars in study books, tutor sessions, and prep classes as they prepare for SAT’s, ACT’s, and many others.

The standardized tests are meant to test people’s knowledge and ability to problemsolve and use their academic skills to the best of the abilities, but is it really the best way to judge students?

When Autumn Ketzner Stumpf was asked if colleges should focus more on academic or individual achievements, she said, “I think they should look into individual achievements especially since we have such a large school. It’s really competitive and there are not a lot of opportunities to focus on certain classes.” The millions

of students that take the SAT are given the same questions and are challenged the same way. However, because of different academic levels and skills, it can be unfair for people who are not familiar with the material or have never seen it before. In the future, when applying for jobs, competitiveness can be high in today’s economy.

Senior Kayla Wooldridge had a different opinion. She said, “It really depends on which college you choose. If you’re going to an Ivy League school, I think it’s more important to look at academic achievements. Academics are always important, you’re going to college for a reason [and] you’d definitely want academics involved.” College administrators look at a student’s grades and test scores more than what the individual has achieved.

Many students and parents stress over this factor as numbers on paper reflect a person more brightly.

In the process of college applications and applying to different places, one might ask: is college really worth it? In reality, it takes a lot of money and dedication to get a degree in any type of field. “You have to do your research to know what’s worth it. I’d rather have a degree and get offered more jobs.” said Stumpf and Wooldridge, “You’ll end up more successful in your career and have a better one. The bigger, the better.”

Continuing on about the topic of standardized tests, should colleges base people off of the scores a person got or broaden their aspects? “No, because it’s harder for people that are not good test takers,” said Wooldridge. Stumpf had a different approach to the question. “There are going to be tests for you for your whole life. If you’re not willing to put in your time to study for it and show your full capacity, you shouldn’t try because it all depends on how willing you are to achieve what you want.

Here in America, it is so easily handed to you; there should be no excuses for you to not be able to do it.”

Seniors have a lot of things to worry about and college is one of the biggest factors.

Going to college is very rewarding in the long run and having a degree can help a lot in the future. Whether it is grades or a person’s individual achievements, there are many different ways to gain attention. No matter what way, people should show off the things they excel at and stand tall, carrying themselves with pride and satisfaction.

The 2016 presidential election has been a shocking turn of events . . . for some.

One party has a calm, experienced candidate who has been involved in law and politics since the seventies. The other party’s candidate is a failed business man whose strongest support comes from white supremacists. Hmm, tough choice.

Hillary Clinton is the obvious choice for commander-in-chief because she knows what she is doing. Win or lose, Clinton’s candidacy is a large step forward for women in politics. “The fact that we have a major candidate that is a female has to allow for more women to be involved in politics at a higher level,” said Joe Crafton, the AP US History teacher.

Clinton has the drive to get things done. She doesn’t give up, and would never file for bankruptcy six times. She knows the requirements for the job, from the best way to handle foreign affairs to releasing her tax returns- 38 years of them. Clinton also realizes the importance of gender equality.

Clinton has been a big supporter of feminist causes throughout her many years in politics. She has stated multiple times that she is aiming for a cabinet that is about 50 percent female, like the world. Crafton said, “Actually, I think it should be 52/48 because 52 percent of the world is women… Everything we do should be equal. It’s not yet, but it should be.”

It was less than 10 years ago that the thought of a black president seemed unattainable. Now it is commonplace. Countries all over the world have elected female leaders, from Israel to the UK. America is behind on gender equality in politics.

If she wins, Clinton will have the power to choose multiple supreme court justices and federal judges. Clinton will be sure to pick qualified candidates who believe that people’s rights are more important than money.

We, as a nation, cannot allow someone like Trump to take office. Voting for Clinton is the only way to prevent that; voting for non-major candidates is a waste of a vote.

Gary Johnson is polling at about 10 percent, and Jill Stein is at 4 percent. Crafton said they don’t have a chance, “On our ballot I think there will be eight different parties other than the two majors. And that’s one of the problems; they beat up on each

other... They don’t have the money to spend like the two major parties.”

So to those screaming “Bernie-or-bust,” please consider what your vote means.

Understanding the delegate system and how they draw district lines may show Bernie Bros an unwelcome truth, but it’s important for voters to do research. Third party, green party, write-ins, or any other non-major party candidates will not win, “not in our system... Which is realty sad,” said Crafton.

Right now, the race is practically tied. “In the last few elections it has been [tied]… normally one candidate really stands out but the last few have been really close,” said Crafton. The most powerful position in the world is up for grabs. We need to elect someone who deserves it.

The way Clinton handled herself in the debate should be proof enough of who is more prepared to be the president. Donald Trump lied or claimed false things more than 34 times, according to an article on The Star, compared to Clinton’s six lies or false claims. While Clinton boasted about her preparedness and policy, Trump boasted that he has evaded paying federal taxes, which makes him “smart.”

Despite all this, his fans are unmoved. This is because they do not care that he is unfit to be president. They are just attracted to his hateful, unprofessional opinions.

The bottom line is that Hillary Clinton knows what she is doing and has done what is necessary to get the job done. Trump has no experience and is using xenophobic and sexist rhetoric to appeal to the American underbelly. “Basket of deplorables” is too kind a phrase for anyone who supports the kind of person who spews such hate and fear-mongering.

Renee Resendez, the MHS soccer team captain, was asked a couple questions about the team. Resendez said, “Being the team captain is nice but I make sure everyone is playing a hundred percent and everyone has swagger and confidence while playing.” With the team being fourth in the nation Resendez said that the team tries not to think about what spot they are they just love to play the game.

Out of soccer he tries to focus on school and is getting ready for college and other things like time with friends and family. As far as soccer goes he tries to focus on the little things like passing and technical points of the game. For games he makes sure everyone is checked in but at the same time excited and happy for the game.

Resendez said the ultimate goal he wants the team to achieve is to win the state title but that means everyone is going to have to work harder every day. He has noticed that most of the team has been replaced by new players and he has also noticed that this year they have to work harder.

Resendez said, “last year we had a lot of individual talent and the younger guys know they have to work harder to replace those spots.” This meaning the team has new starters and new people on the team that have to fill in the spot. The teams work has kicked the season off to a great start the team now being second in state and being fourth in nation has put the team in a great spot for themselves.

They have won everyone one of their games that they have played this season definitely showing how much their hard work pays off, also showing how bad they want to go to the state finals.

It is Kalli Dickey’s last year here at the high school playing volleyball as a McMinnville Grizzly. For those who don’t know Dickey as a student or an athlete, she is a second year starter and first year co-captain for the varsity volleyball team here at the school who has been dominating the game ever since her freshman year.

Volleyball has been a part of Dickey’s life ever since she was a little girl, and she was even surprised that she wasn’t born on the court because her mom was still playing when she was eight and a half months pregnant. Participating in this sport is a tradition in Dickey’s family and when asked why she started playing she said that, “If you didn’t play volleyball you were the odd man out in my family because every woman had played volleyball, so it definitely felt that if I was going to play any sport volleyball should be the one.”

Each player on this year’s varsity team has their own talents on and off the court, and for Dickey it is no different. When asked about what Dickey adds to the team; head volleyball coach Hayden Sweet said, “Kalli adds a lot of power in the front row, she is one of the best blockers for our team, and she has also really learned to move the ball around offensively, and has just become a more versatile player overall.”

Volleyball is one of Dickey’s passions in life and when asked about her favorite part of the game she said, “There are so many aspects of volleyball that I love that I honestly don’t have a favorite, but having a team and bonding with them and getting to know them so well throughout the season is a great part. While also just being able to do something I love while putting in my entire effort into the game is just a wonderful feeling.”

Color guard is described by Katelyn Barton, 12, as being a, “physical, competitive art form involving flag and rifle spinning and dance.” A color guard team often provides visuals to music played by the marching band, though they do have their own season in the winter. They will be competing with the band this season with “Olympic Spirit” as their theme, which is a nod at the Rio Olympics that occurred earlier this year.

This artistic dance form also teaches each member the value of working as a team. “My favorite part of color guard is the teamwork,” said Sung Lee, 12. “Every-

one’s skill level is different, but we all help each other.”

All those on the guard are treated with the same respect—from the most experienced spinner to the newest member. There are about eight girls in color guard currently, but that number is expected to reach fifteen or twenty people once they begin their own competition season.

“Color guard is a means to prepare members for winter guard,” said Mr. David Barton, the high school band director. Winter guard still includes the visual interpretation of music, but it excludes the band altogether. Instead, a theme unique to the guard is chosen, as well as a routine and the music that will be set to the moves. Typically, there are not many boys on the color guard team, but winter guard is open to anyone willing to participate. Barton joked that, “Most people want to dance, but are too afraid to do it; being a part of the guard forces them to.”

The color guard team will also be receiving uniforms this year. Adidas is providing Olympic-style white U.S. warmups to reflect the year’s theme, and all

of the guard members are looking forward to it. “I’m very happy about uniforms, and it feels nice to be getting outside support,” said Lee. Within a few years, Barton would like to start a cadet group in the middle school, and wishes for the high school team to be competitive in three years. The guard is competing already, but their goal is not to win competitions. As the years pass and they are able to

KICKING OFF THE SEASON

The varsity boys soccer team has started this season off well. With a nine game win streak, along with 37 goals scored, they look to be just about unstoppable. After the departure of 13 seniors last year, including all of our captains, this 2016 season looked uncertain. But new captain Renee Resendez and many juniors stepping

We all remember the heartbreaking loss in the state semifinals to Lincoln last season, but that loss has been avenged after crushing them 3-0 in September.

sendez to win a state championship, and he has faith in his team. When asked if he believes that his team can take it all the way, he responded; “Yeah, I really think so, we’re fourth in the nation right now, and I think that it’ll be on everyone’s mind, but we have to just keep working hard and doing what we can control.”

Junior Nick Denley said, “the first obstacle is winning our league and then it’s on to the playoffs where we need to look at every team as a threat no matter what the ranking.”

Junior Diego Chavez also believes that the team can win state. “With all the hard work we’ve been putting in, and how we’ve come together as a family, I think we can win it. I want that banner in Red Gym.” So far the team is (9-0) and is ranked first in the state. With recent wins over West Albany and (Sprague) the boys are looking to carry that momentum into the playoffs, which begin Oct. 29.

As we roll into the 2016-2017 year, many big changes, one surprising one is the varsity football team. The team has made a huge comeback this year, kicking off their season with big wins and filling hearts with achievement and pride.

Their record is currently 4-2.

Early rumors in August indicated that the football team had improved majorly throughout their summer practices, and were extremely excited for what the year had to bring them.

“I think that when we played our first game this year we had a majority of our strategy and approach set in stone, I mean we tweaked it and added to it but we were pretty confident in what we were doing,” said head coach Ryan McIrvin.

Last season the Grizzlies had a tough schedule, with their first few games against teams that have been traditionally at the top of our league.

“The biggest challenge for us this year will be persevering and playing strong against those teams that have outstanding athletic programs, as well as keeping our players healthy and improving,” McIrvin said.

“Over the summer time, we focused on what we needed to do to become better players,” said Cooper Bousquet, “We worked on technique, we worked on tackling, and we worked on major

GROWING ARTIST DEVELOPES INTEREST IN ART

This latest school year has given us a plethora of new students. One of them in particular has been noticed by art teacher Christine Garrison: a freshman artist named Luke Leathers.

“The first thing was he went over to the computer and started looking up ideas. I think for a freshman to show kind of that initiative.. a lot of them were afraid to get up and especially use technology. ...

He chose a very detailed photograph to start to include in his design, so just the ambition there was already pretty noticeable,” said Garrison.

Leathers is very ambitious indeed, as he has plans to attend an art college after high school.

Leathers has a very surrealistic style, utilizing only grey tones. He says he likes his works to be more than just unrefined doodles.

“When you see my drawings, I want you to think of the meaning to them.” Still, when asked if there was anything he felt he had to improve on, he simply said “Making my drawings more realistic.”

Despite his talent in this one particular medium, Leathers says he’d like to try out some other things, too.

“I wanna try to learn like, using the oil pastels.”

Garrison believes in Leathers’ ambition, saying “I

think he’s going to have the confidence to try some things pretty quickly. ... I think that just getting outside of the standard pencil will be the first step.”

Even though he’s garnered this much attention, Leathers has only been an artist for a surprising amount of time.

“SINCE LAST YEAR.. LIKE, LAST YEAR WASN’T THE BEST FOR ME, SO I DIDN’T REALLY PAY ATTENTION OR ANYTHING, I WOULD JUST DRAW ALL THE TIME.” - LUKE LEATHERS It seems like drawing was his hidden talent.

Garrison emphasized her hopes for both Leathers and the other freshman artists.

“He’s hopefully one of many that I will have in my freshman class, who we can kinda see grow throughout the year. But, I expect that both he and some of his classmates will surprise some people at the age of 14 and 15.”

FINDING A FUTURE IN ART SENIOR KATRI HAMINA IS A SKILLED ARTIST WITH A PASSION JENNA FOLLIN

Katri Hamina, a senior here at McMinnville High School is paving the path of her future by using her gift of fine arts. She has her family to thank for her beautiful masterpieces, and, in fact, Hamina said, “I first got into drawing because of my cousin Mitchell. I remember when I was younger, at his house, and I would go down the stairs and there was just, what appeared to be, like thousands of paintings of his birds and stuff, and I was just like: this is what I want to do for the rest of my life. I just want to be like [Mitchell].”

As she continues to grow and prosper as an artist, Hamina uses her family as her main inspiration as well as a hard time in her life. During the tail end of eighth grade and all of ninth, Hamina struggled with being ill and often missed out on a lot of important events during those years. A lot of her artwork stems from that time.

Hamina does a lot of realistic pieces, which she chooses to do because of the details it takes to bring the piece to life, but she said, “I really love art that is sort of abstract. I love stuff that has a lot emotion, [and] a lot of visual pull.”

Hamina also said that abstract art is one of her favorite types to create, mainly because it’s the least stressful. Abstract can really be whatever the artist chooses for it to be, and Hamina uses it as a “let go” and a way for her to do art just for herself. For Hamina, all art is absolutely

gorgeous, but if she could had to choose just one style as her favorite, she’d choose abstract.

Since Hamina is a senior this year, she, of course, has been thinking of her future. For a long time, Hamina had thought of studying Political Science with a concentration in Global Studies and do art as a hobby, but this past summer (2016) Hamina attended a camp that gave her the opportunity to see what it would be like to be a part of that life, and she’s seen that the people who are in politics are ruthlessly competitive and has decided that it’s just not up her alley.

Hamina has recently chosen to pursue the fine arts and use global events as her inspiration to help open people’s eyes to what’s really going on in the world.

Many people around Hamina love her work.

Classmate Megan DeYoung said this of Hamina’s art, “It’s so dynamic and graphic. I think it’s very representational of her own personal style.” Mary Steeprow said, “[Hamina’s art is] very colorful with a lot of focus on lighting and details.” Hamina’s teacher and art mentor Christine Garrison said, “Katri has grown a considerable amount over the last three years. She has always been highly ambitious and her work reflects strong attention to detail. We’re all very excited to see where her senior portfolio takes her.”

The Olympic Games has become a huge part of our society. Here are some of the strangest sports that have previously been in the games, and some that still are.

The first one is the Modern Pentathlon. It is a compilation of 5 events that have very little in common with each other; Fencing, 200 freestyle swimming, show jumping horses, shooting, and a cross-country race.

In Rope climbing, which was only in 5 Olympic Games, the competitors had to reach the top of a 25 foot rope using only their hands; after starting sitting on the ground. The Olympic record for the 20 foot rope was made by Don Perry, who climbed the rope in 2.8 seconds.

Shooting has been a large part of the games, but in the 1900 Paris Olympics, Live Pigeon Shooting was introduced. 300 pigeons were released into the air, and the shooters tried to shoot as many as possible. The winner killed 21 birds. Many spectators were disgusted by the dead birds everywhere, and this strange sport never made a reappearance.

Also in the 1900 Olympics was an event called Swimming obstacle course. This event took place in the Seine River, with athletes crawling over and under boats, and climbing poles in the water.

There were many more strange sports in the past years, but these were the weirdest of the weird.

The tragic accident that happened on May 28, 2016, at the Cincinnati Zoo, shocked millions of people everywhere.

The beloved gorilla, a rare silverback, was violently killed and shot by zookeepers after a 4 year old child, fell into the gorilla exhibit and came faceto-face with Harambe.

In a viral video, the child was seen standing right in front of Harambe’s face, then the unbelieve happened, Harambe grabbed the 4-year-old child by the ankle and dragged him away from plain sight and the video ends.

Afterwards when the video had stopped recording, the Zookeepers shot Harambe with a single shot. The reason why this issue got so popular was because the Cincinnati Zoo tried to cover up and insist noth-

ing happened, and saying that Harambe was a crazy and untamed animal. Shooting Harambe was not the only precaution they could have taken to stop Harambe from grabbing and pulling the child, but in the African forests that is how silverback gorillas nurture their infants. So it wasn’t necessarily true that Harambe was purposely trying to hurt the 4-year old child, it was just an act of common nature. .

There have been similar cases of this happening such as in 2003 there were two tiger attacks that happened, and one of the tigers was killed in the same way as Harambe.

Whatever the situation may be, killing innocent animals for not knowing better is very discriminating. If animals were free and lived in their own habitats these kind of situations wouldn’t be happening today.
