Of the 21 districts with construction bonds on the May ballot, McMinnville’s is the largest at $89.4 million. The district chose that amount because taxpayers can retire that much debt without paying more in property taxes, $2.80 per $1,000 of assessed value. McMinnville hasn’t asked its voters to approve a school bond since 2006, when it demolished and rebuilt half of Newby Elementary and added more than 20 classrooms at McMinnville High. This bond, if approved, also would go primarily to upgrade the high school by adding a vocational/technical wing with classrooms and labs for construction, fabrication, engineering, manufacturing and horticulture. state matching funds, because it ranks one notch below Gaston for economic need, judged by the district’s tax base and share of students who live below the poverty line. But if voters in at least two higher-need districts reject proposed bonds this month, McMinnville could receive some or all of a $7.1 million state grant. McMinnville Superintendent Mary Alice Russell said her district has prepared a list of high-priority projects it will undertake if it does get the state money. And, like leaders in other districts, she’s hoping for a separate state grant for earthquake-related improvements available in September. Construction of the bond funded renovations will begin this summer, and continue throughout the school year. Once the vocational building phase is finished, demolition of 5th and 6th hall will begin in order to construct the new gymnasium with an indoor track. By 2018, multiple phases will take place with tearing and rebuilding facilities where the red gym and commons are currently standing. Unfortunately for this year’s juniors and sophomores, most of the renovations will not take place while they are enrolled here. However, this year’s freshman class and many classes to come will be able to see and live the spectacular facilities that will soon to be MHS.

RALLY AGAINST RACISM MHS STUDENTS PROTEST AT THE DISTRICT OFFICE IN SUPPORT OF FORREST GROVE HIGH SCHOOL BY HANNAH SIEPMANN

After a series of protests at Forest Grove High school and surrounding schools Thursday, MHS students organized a walk-out demonstration Friday morning to demonstrate solidarity with Forest Grove and support the acceptance of all ethnicities at Mac High. On Thursday morning, a banner with the words “build a wall” was posted at Forest Grove HS, prompting hundreds of students to walk out of school and protest racially insensitive and threatening messages like the poster. After this protest, students from Hillsboro High decided to show solidarity with Forest Grove and walk the 9 miles between the schools while carrying signs and chanting about racial inequality. Thursday night, Mac High students used Twitter to express their views on patriotism, racial justice, and other related issues. Many showed support for the protesters, while others responded to the issue by proposing stricter immigration laws and less equality and respect for immigrants. These tweets increased in intensity, resulting in concerns from the administration about school safety and gun violence. In response to both the events in the Portland suburb schools Thursday and the racially intolerant comments expressed on Twitter, almost 500 Mac High students participated in a walk-out Friday morning during 4th period.
“The reason I participated in the peaceful protest wasn’t because I felt I was threatened but because there were other students that did,” said participating student Junior Bautista, “Those students who were worried and rightfully so should be shown that there are others willing to offer and hand to comfort them in troubling times.” These students, as well as a group from Patton Middle School, marched downtown with signs in order to protest inequality at local high schools, and they stopped for a brief rally in front of the District Office. Many Mac High students spoke about the importance of diversity at the rally, and superintendent Maryalice Russell spoke to the crowd about the district’s plans to promote racial unity at Mac High. After the rally, the district posted a news article explaining the protest, and included the same article in Spanish, demonstrating its effort to be inclusive. The students who participated wanted to demonstrate their support for the students who protested inequality at Forest Grove and point out how racial justice is an issue in McMinnville as well. “It’s upsetting that we have to resort to walkabouts to make people feel accepted, but if that’s what it takes, that is what must be done,” said Bautista, “At the end of the day we’re all humans living on the same earth and we need to learn to love a little more.”

As of early 2016, a widespread outbreak of Zika fever is ongoing in the Americas and the Pacific. The outbreak began in April 2015 in Brazil, and has spread to other parts of South and North America, including several islands in the Pacific. In January 2016, the World Health Organization said the virus was likely to spread throughout most of the Americas by the end of the year. In February 2016, WHO declared the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern as evidence grew that Zika is a cause of birth defects and neurological problems. Zika is transmitted from pregnant women to the fetus and causes microcephaly and other severe brain anomalies in infants born of women infected with the virus. Zika infections in adults can result in Guillain-Barré syndrome. Prior to this outbreak, Zika was considered a mild infection, as most Zika virus infections are asymptomatic, mak-
ing it difficult to determine precise estimates of the number of cases. In approximately one in five cases, Zika virus infections result in Zika fever, a minor illness that causes symptoms such as fever and a rash. The virus is spread mainly by mosquitoes, which are commonly found throughout the tropical and subtropical Americas. It can also be spread by the other insects such as ticks, which ar distributed as far north as the Great Lakes region in North America. A number of countries have issued travel warnings, and the outbreak is expected to reduce tourism significantly. Several countries have taken the unusual step of advising their citizens to delay pregnancy until more is known about the virus and its impact on fetal development. It has even affected the safety of athletes and spectators of the upcoming 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

This past April, the softball team at Lake Oswego high school filed a Title IX lawsuit against their school district for allegedly discriminating against female athletes. According to ABC News, all 10 players and their parents have included their names in the lawsuit, which has been filed in federal court. Title IX is a law that was passed in 1972, which states that all boys and girls are required to have gender equity in any educational program which receives federal funding. The law often deals with inequality in sports, but it also applies to Access to Higher Education, Career Education, Education for Pregnant and Parenting Students, Employment, Learning Environment, Math and Science, Sexual Harassment, and Standardized Testing and Technology. According to ABC News, parents first started submitting complaints in 2014. The team then decided to file the lawsuit on April 4, stating that, “the boys’ baseball field also has superior dugouts, drinking fountains, stadium seating, a press box, sound system and clean, sanitary bathrooms for players and fans.” The softball team recently published a release stating that while a donation was received to improve the softball facilities, it was allegedly reallocated to another sport.
Later, the school held a meeting with the team in which school representatives allegedly told the team that they could get a new facility, but only after winning a state championship. In an article published by Katu News, it is stated that the team does not want money from the school district. The girls and their parents want a judge to require that the school to upgrade the softball field and give the team equal funding. A court date has yet to be scheduled to resolve the issue between the team and the school district. The Lake Oswego School District spokeswoman, Nancy Duin, released a statement to Katu, in response to the lawsuit, which stated, “The district has a long history of supporting athletic opportunities for its female athletes and has been working on plans to improve practice and playing conditions for the Lake Oswego High School softball team. Some improvements have already been made, such as providing suitable inclement weather practice opportunities for girls softball and an upgrade to the indoor softball batting cage. Additional planning, coordination and equipment are required to further improve conditions and the district expects those will be in place within the next several weeks.”

NEW CONSTRUCTION TO BEGIN

Thanks to the voters in the May election, the school bond passed, meaning that improvements and additions to the high school and other district buildings will start this summer. Construction is set to begin immediately after school gets out, and the first area to be renovated will be the part of the school with the welding, woodworking, and other hands-on pathway classes.
SUMMER IS ALMOST HERE
It’s hard to register for classes with no idea about what each class will be like. Every teacher has a different style, and students should know what to expect before they commit to being in a class for a whole year because a yea9 rlong class with a teacher that doesn’t work well with a certain student can be painful. MHS likes to advise students to forecast for classes in subjects that interest them instead of for a certain teacher; however, a class with one teacher can HANNAH SIEPMANN be completely different than the same class taught by someone else. Students should get to know who will teach each class before registering for them. Each student has an individual learning style, and each teacher has an individual teaching style. I personally prefer teachers who can prevent their classrooms from becoming chaotic, but other students prefer teachers with more of a hands-off approach. I like to know how prepared I’ll be for AP tests or finals, and the only way I can predict that is by knowing who my teachers will be. If teachers’ names were put in the course catalog next to their respective classes, students would have the opportunity to go talk to these teachers and make sure that they would enjoy and work well 6

with a specific teacher’s style. Students won’t thrive in classes about a topic that interests them when they don’t mesh well with the teacher; it’s much better for students to take classes from inspirational teachers who spark their interest about a new subject. Not only would this change benefit students who want to know what classes would be best for them, it would improve the school environment by putting a certain amount of pressure on teachers to be enthusiastic and passionate in order for students to actively choose their courses. It can be a challenge for the staff members and counselors to decide which teachers will teach each class before forecasting because they don’t know how many students will show interest in each class. This can be solved, though, if students are warned during the forecasting process that the teacher assigned to each class is not set in stone- it may well change before the start of the next school year. Even though students wouldn’t know for sure, they would have a better idea of what to expect for the upcoming year. In order for students to have the best school years they can with classes that they are actively excited about attending, they need to know before forecasting who they will most likely have as a teacher for each class.
Mac High students are beginning to see the end of the school year, and even underclassmen are feeling the senioritis. Good news: seniors only have two more weeks and the rest of us only have three! No matter how many fun activities ASB and Activities put on for us, there’s nothing quite like summer break to destress and catch a break before the next school year!
PUSHING TO THE FINISH LINE Although the school year is winding down, there are still endless projects, papers, and presentations to do for students to keep their grades up before finals. For AP classes where students have already taken the most important test of the year, there are still tons of projects on related topics that have to be done, even though there might not be a difficult final exam. Keep pushing through, Grizzlies!
TENSIONS IN FOREST GROVE The spark for the Mac High walkout on May 20th was racist comments and actions in nearby Forest Grove High School. A group of students posted a banner in the cafeteria with racist implications, demonstrating a certain level of racial intolerance that exists not only at Forest Grove, but at many other high schools too.
WHO GETS TO VOTE? Many students were displeased when they were not given the opportunity to vote for ASB executive board members or class senators. The recent switch to voting via Google Forms may have seemed like a fairer and more efficient system, but it ended up discluding many students who don’t take history or English classes or have teachers who didn’t prioritize voting.

Let’s just stop and take a moment to listen to today’s music: the jazz, rock, rap, R&B, pop, and hip hop. It all started somewhere, but yet all these music genres are sung by white singers and rappers. These are the singers that get more views and get more money, such as Nicki Minaj and Iggy Azalea. Why is it that Iggy gets top rapper of 2014 for having broken the record of 2 hit singles in the top 10? A lot of reviews said that Iggy’s music is” trash” and “disgrace to hip hop”, so then why is she so popular? Is it because she’s white? Do the people themselves who say this know the definition of hip hop themselves? Nicki had been working for her success since 2010. Both of these artists stick out everything they have for attention, such as their big butt and small waist. Yet Iggy arose to fame faster than Nicki when they both started out. ELIZABETH KOKORUDA Flashback to when Eminem started becoming famous, music has changed a lot since him. In one of his songs he says, “Though I’m not the first king of controversy I am the worst thing since Elvis Presley, to do Black Music so selfishly and use it to get myself wealthy.” After Eminem became really famous as being the best rapper ever, the whole music culture changed drastically. Even before Eminem, there was Tupac, whose music spoke truth, and he only won 3 awards in his entire life, while Eminem won a total of 155. Now let’s flash forward to 2016the music today is exploited, trash, fake, and is toyed with, and we name it hip hop. Hip hop started with people living in the projects and a block that white people don’t even
cruise through. White people take all the want from black culture and consume all the money. “But will we show up for black lives?”-Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. People protest in the streets saying, “Black Lives Matter!” Some people vote for equality but do they mean it? Or mostly do they just do it when it’s convenient? Or whenever a trend comes around and people don’t want to be left out and want to be accepted? Do people say it because some people think it’s right and what they believe in has a purpose? They tweet, “RIP Tyrone Martin” but do they even know who that is? There are so many opinions and so many views, so much discussion and confusion. Who is right, who is wrong? Some people say, I don’t want to sound like I’m saying I’m hating on white artists- good music is good music regardless of what you look like- it’s more that we live in a society where we are so oblivious to things. So are we as people just going to stand by and let another kid get killed on the streets? Mostly today people are more concerned about being called racist than racism itself. Either we look away from the problem or we don’t even know it exists. The media surrounds us with what they want to see and we become blind to what’s going on right in front of our faces. We need to stop the discrimination about the color of our skin, and the toughest thing that white people have to do is talk to each other about the hard things that people don’t really want to talk about, such as to your mom, dad, teachers, and friends. Society needs to stop sweeping everything under the rug and thinking that eventually the problem is going to go away.

In the United States pride in our country is something we really care about. With politicians running campaigns on the “defense of our country” and islamophobic ideas; it has become the norm to care only about our own well-being and allow our patriotism to harm us. However, we live in the United States, a country founded upon pillars of democracy and help to the common man. If we infringe JOE GULLO on these ideas we are not upholding the standard of nationalism which we attempt to uphold. Pride in one’s country is a great thing and it should be recognized, however if it harms us as a people and begins to harm our morality then we need to make a change. The first problem with nationalism is that it harms our intelligence as a people. The correlation is that when we focus on ourselves and only our own pride we become almost hostile with any sort of foreign or “non-European” culture. It’s become common place to lump all countries with a predominately Islamic Faith into terrorists, or to think of all of Africa as lesser because of their slower development. All of this hate is fueled by nationalism and our self-obsession with our own development. Not only is this immoral but it slows our ability to open ourselves to new innovation which harms our intelligence as a whole. The other major problem with our overnationalism is that it is directed in the wrong ways. People seem to forget about what the United States was actually founded upon. Our new attitude is exactly what we tried to escape from in the Revolutionary War. By closing our borders, and turning up our noses at anything foreign we instantly subject ourselves to a trend of ignorance, stupidity, and false entitlement. Nationalism should build us up not tear others down. As a whole, nationalism and love for the United States is something that is very important to all of us. But by directing it incorrectly and spreading hate instead of love we don’t help anybody including ourselves out. We need to change ourselves to save ourselves.

“GREAT” MOVIES OUR DESIRE FOR NONSTOP ACTION AND CGI IS DEVALUING CLASSICALLY GREAT MOVIES BY JOE GULLO

As the human race has moved forwards, so has our ability to create. This is particularly embodied in the movie industry through new advances in special effects, leading to modern masterpieces such as “The Life Of Pi,” “Avatar,” and “The Revenant.” For the most part these changes are welcomed by the public (Check the box offices). However, the issues arising because of these advances are the growth of negative aspects in our entertainment culture, and the devaluation of greatness in past movies. JOE GULLO The first problem that has come about is negative parts of entertainment. Our thirst to be entertained has allowed for the movie industry to be able to not try as hard but still turn over massive revenue for producing a bad movie. Because of this movies like “Transformers: Age Of Extinction” are able to gross 1.104 billion dollars at the box office. There are many problems with this including our increasing lack of culture, and education on film. But the biggest issue with this is that legitimately good movies are beaten out through our infatuation with the unimaginative. One example of this would be Terrence Malick’s 2011 masterpiece, “The Tree Of Life.” While the movie was hailed as a critical masterpiece cited as the greatest movie of the 2000s by many; it only grossed $54.3 million. In a world where “Transformers” grossed more than “The Tree Of Life” we have an obvious problem. The second issue with our devaluation of greatness is our move away from the greatness of the past. Few people our age have seen “Pulp Fiction” and even less have seen “Apocalypse Now” or “The Godfather.” Everybody is entitled to like what they lack and by no means should people be forced to watch movies. However, there are movies which are actually meant to make us feel something. Our movements away from these movies towards bad comedies or perverted shows of violence are leading to our carelessness and lack of culture altogether. These movies can be fun and people should be allowed to enjoy them… as long as they are not forgetting what greatness really is. Overall, our forward momentum has led to some masterpieces of cinema. But, our delusion of a great movie and our rapid deconstruction of ethical and intellectual satisfaction is not something we should leave untouched. All I ask is that rather then moving one way with utter disregard of the past we take into account old masterpieces as well as new. To guarantee ourselves a great movie culture ahead of a bad one. 8

FRESHMAN SEMINAR CLASSES NEED TO TURN THEIR FOCUS TO RELEVANT TOPICS INSTEAD OF LEARNING TOPICS THAT DON’T RELATE TO HIGH SCHOOL FRESHMEN BY ETHAN COLLINS

Each year, new freshmen are inducted into MHS and presented with tons of chances to get involved, take courses pertinent to their interests, find help through various school services, and make the most of their schooling careers; however, when just starting out, it is difficult to have the foresight to take advantage of all these. For this issue, Freshman Seminar was developed as a course that exposes students to what is expected of them, and what they can expect. The class covers behavioral expectations, graduation requirements, a self-building curriculum, an introduction to pathways, and career education. It seemingly covers all the bases and there are definitely some good elements about the class, but throughout the year, these core ideas are diluted with content that doesn’t apply to students or isn’t practical in their school careers. Throughout the year, several projects may include: “What’s your Dream House,” watching various “inspirational” movies, and other activities unrelated to the curriculum. When students were asked about their impressions of the course, responses included: “I felt like it was a waste of time- we watched movies and talked about stuff that didn’t relate to the high school at all” and “I
thought it was good that we talked about the pathways, but some of the other stuff just wasted time in class.” Although the responses seem damning, in each interview, students praised pathway introductions and said the class should be focused on related content. In an interview with a former Freshman Seminar instructor they said that their takeaway was that it “should be a transitionary course that introduces students to the high school. I thought that pathway introductions and self-building were pertinent, but career curriculum should be left for an upper-classmen course.” If students already know what they want to do, then that is fantastic, but high school is a time for finding interests, and if someone is too focused on what’s ahead of high school, then the experiences that await them will be left stagnant. Freshman seminar classes could be shortened to one semester with content just covering the core concepts of the class, or remain the same length with greater discussion about courses, classes, and services that don’t always receive proper advocacy. When faced with a challenge or discrimination, some people choose to become activists. The goal of an activist is to campaign for some sort of change. There are many different ways an activist can make change, including protesting, writing, boycotting, and educating others. We have chosen to become activists by writing about important societal issues. The issues featured in this edition of The Bruin, were selected because they are something that we found to be relevant not only in our society, but in our school as well. Many activists have created social justice movements in support of movements dealing with feminism, racism, the LGBTQ+
community, and many more, so we decided to showcase them here. The purpose of this insert is to educate the general high school population on these important societal issues. These articles present both fact and opinion on feminism, racism (specifically Black Lives Matter and cultural appropriation), and LGBTQ+ movements. How the reader interprets the movement, however, is for them to decide. Why does the word feminism have such negative connotation? Being a feminist is much more than what others think. I think that Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie put it very well when she described feminism and what a feminist stands for,
WHAT IS FEMINISM?
According to Merriam-Webster, feminism is defined as, “the theory of the
political, economic, and social equality of the sexes.” This means that, contrary to popular belief, feminism is not the idea that women are better than men, but it is the idea that women should be equal to men. The term was first coined in 1895 (Merriam-Webster), by suffragettes seeking to earn equal rights for women. Since the agricultural revolution thousands and thousands of years ago, women have been victims of oppression and inequality, as they historically have not been able to hold the same jobs, positions in politics, and make any societal contributions outside their homes. The efforts of feminists, however, over the past century helped make significant progress in the status of women. Over the past 200 years, women have started going to college, joined the workforce, and earned the right to vote. There are, however, still problems that women discrimination in the workplace. When asked if they are feminists, people are sometimes taken aback by the question. Why does this happen? I believe this is due to society not taking the time to truly educate themselves on what feminism really is. Without a single doubt in my mind, I identify as a proud feminist. Even as a male I see how females are not treated as equals in our culture. Freshman Colin Salewski says, “I am a feminist, people should be equal. It’s that simple.” Throughout generations people’s points of views towards subjects have shifted. Payment for completing work is a huge part of what it means to have a job but women seem to always be payed less than men. This is a prime example of inequality and why feminism should be supported. According to www.iwpr.org the average man makes about 21% more than females compared to the average women who. This is the epitome of what feminists desire, equal opportunity and equal rights. Most people think that feminists are women who hate all males but that’s not the case at all says Kathryn Hildebrant, “people just don’t take the time to educate themselves nowadays. It’s sad to hear people say that the don’t support the movement because they should.” I then decided that further investigation was needed to see whether people actually knew what feminism is. Morganne Larmouth, 10, states that “all that feminism is is just a social movement that attempts to obtain gender equality.” From what I have discovered, most people actually know what it is. There response to feminism is usually along the lines of Griselda Ceja’s “it’s just that society has given us this mindset that ‘it’s weird to have women be equals to men.” So here we are again, the word society. Society is usually always blamed for being the cause of negative things. I think people always forget that they are what make up society and that society does not make us up. It is crucial that we all help change society’s perception on the world and that we get involved to help achieve gender equality for all. 10

What is cultural appropriation? Cultural appropriation is the adoption or use of elements of one culture by members of another. Sometimes when you use another person’s culture or beliefs as a form of fashion or charismatic trait you can offend a population. Culture appropriation has been taken over our lives in simple ways and in extreme cases. Cultural appropriation typically involves members of a dominant group exploiting the culture of less privileged groups - often with little understanding of the latter’s history, experience and traditions. Minimal tattoos such as dream catchers can sometimes be offensive to the culture of Native Americans. This can include the use of another culture’s dance, dress, music, language, cuisine, religious symbols, etc. When dressing and henna as a fashion statement it can be a fun thing. On the other hand, things like blackface should never be perceived as appropriate. This is extremely offensive. Every skin tone is beautiful but if you are using a culture as a joke or costume it is not okay.

The LGBTQ+ community has faced multiple struggles throughout history. Whether it may be facing discrimination for their sexuality, gender identity, or their lifestyle, people that are LGBTQ+ usually face some struggles in life. Being a cisgender heterosexual is clearly ‘the normal’ in our society. Although the community has experienced more acceptance in recent year, there are still tragic moments in which there is hatred and disgust. Homeless youth is a huge problem in our society, but to think that 40% of the young adults are LGBTQ+ is devastating. “It’s a tragedy of course. Your parents are shaming you and judging you for who you are.” says the senior Angela Chen. The fact that homosexual and non cisgender teens are living on the street because of how they identify is sad because they are just trying to be themselves. To identify oneself in a different way that others perceive you should never be seen as a negative thing.
WHY IS IT THAT SOCIETY TELLS YOUNG TEENAGERS THAT THEY ARE ‘TOO YOUNG’ TO KNOW THEIR SEXUALITY IF THEY ARE ANYTHING OTHER THAN HETEROSEXUAL? As an out homosexual male, it makes me sad that other teenagers were not given the safe environment that I was during my coming out process. Knowing that there are multiple kids coming out to their parents everyday is inspiring. It is important to be yourself and accept yourself. The devastating part is when a parent does not accept their child for who they are. This is what results in youth being on the streets.

It seems like every major network and Hollywood studio is suddenly scrambling to put queer people on TV (Laverne Cox and Neil Patrick Harris must be booked out the wazoo). Of course, the boosted representation is an amazing step forward for a country that still bans gay sex in some states, but there are some stereotypes Hollywood can’t seem to get over. Almost every non-straight character on TV is a gay white male, and almost every gay white male is a total stereotype. Characters like the “gay best friend” trope just don’t give a complete picture of what life for LGBT people is like. One of the worst stereotypes is the gay villain: the bad guy with “gay traits” who is a threat to the traditionally-masculine hero. Not only do these movies completely rely on the “sissy stereotype” (that is, the assumption that all gay men are effeminate, well groomed, and weak)- they take it to the next level by associating those traits with pure evil in order to emphasize the protagonist’s manliness. After all, what’s more masculine than beating up a sissy? What is most disturbing about this archetype is that it appears most often in children’s movies. Have you ever noticed the fact that how Disney villains like King Candy from Wreck-It-Ralph speak with an undeniable sing-song pattern and have limp wrists? Or how the The Powerpuff Girls’ tutu-wearing HIM, and the cruel Governor Ratcliffe from Pocahontas are some of the only male cartoon characters you’ll see wearing pink? Even Ursula the Sea Witch is modeled after Divine, a famous drag queen. It doesn’t matter if the characters actually identify as homosexual- They still teach kids to hate effeminate characteristics and associate queerness with bad guys. When Robin Hood has a boyfriend and James Bond can feel comfortable wearing pink, there’ll be plenty of room for gay characters of all levels of evilness. But until then, let’s keep the prada wearing baby-murderer out of the next Disney Princess movie and remember that most people who sound like whimsical bad-guys are more likely to be singing on Broadway than stealing the crown jewels.

Walking the halls of Mac High is an ambitious and determined student striving to become a professional boxer. He is a junior named Federico Guerrero. Boxing was the first choice for Guerrero, “I just got into boxing, and I just fell in love with it.” It was the perfect fit for him, but becoming good at boxing wasn’t going to be an easy road. It takes a lot of commitment and time training to perform at the level that Guerrero does today; he trains on 1st street and competes year round. He is a part of an organization called USA Boxing, which is how he competes in all his tournaments around the state. Guerrero is currently undefeated in the ring and doing extremely well. The

Guerrero is training day in and day out and even with all his experience he is always learning. It won’t be easy, but if Federico keeps working hard, he will certainly achieve all of his goals and continue doing what he loves to do.

The Grizzly’s girls’ softball team made it all the way to quarter finals this year, and a large portion of their success is due to the performance of freshman Payton Hudson. Her great pitching and hitting as well as her outstanding attitude and teamwork with the other girls has given the team a lot of momentum going into the playoffs, and has

The first key to Payton’s success as a softball player is her positive attitude and interactions with her teammates. Sophomore teammate and fellow pitcher Anika Heidt said, “Payton is always encouraging the rest of us to play our best. She is never negative and is able to find the best in tough situations.” Payton’s attitude is one of the main reasons why she was the Grizzly’s pitcher with the most starts all season as well as the player with the highest average on the team. Payton says she tries to keep a positive attitude and she is obviously accomplishing this goal. The second part of Payton’s game which has been so important for the Grizzlies is her overall performance. Not only is she a dominant pitcher but she has brought a rock in the lineup for the Grizzlies this season. Heidt also says, “She has a lot of power and has the most RBI’s of anybody on the team. She always seems to deliver when the team needs it.” Even through her back injury, Payton has been able to stay strong and keep in control. Overall, Payton’s performances this year have been amazing. Hopefully she can carry her successes as a player into next season to help the Grizzlies keep improving every year.

This is the time of year when the most sports-related injuries occur. Spring season for sports is more popular than all the other sport seasons because there are more opportunities such as track, boys and girls tennis, softball, baseball and boys and girls golf. All these sports, except golf, come with a high risk of being injured. McMinnville High School is known for having the most students to participate in sports within our district. Yes, sports can be fun and they’re a good way to stay active, but there is a catch with all fun- many people get injured really badly. They hurt their knees, arms, or legs. But what are the major causes of this injuries? “The most common form of injury in softball is tearing your ligaments when sliding in wrong to base,” said junior Sydney Dix. But there are ways to prevent these injuries such as keeping your body loose instead of tense. Dix also said that “stretching is really good, and wearing braces if needed so.” But some of the athletes do not stretch their muscles, which causes most of injuries that happen. Sophomore Brett Lundeen, who plays JV baseball, said that another reason is “not knowing how to play or be safe and doing stupid things.” Track typically has the most injuries out all the sports because it’s easy to sprain an ankle or knee, and the jumping events are hard on one’s bones and joints. Also in track and field, running can be a cause of accidental injuries. Freshman Adam Hayward, who runs the 800 meter said that most track injuries are caused by “long distance running and not paying attention to where you are running.” Spring sports cause broken bones, sprained ankles, and torn muscles. But having these bad injuries that in the aftermath has a benefit of having a healthy lifestyle and being active. Just know how to take care of your body in order to prevent yourself from getting more injuries.

SOPHOMORE PIERCE MATSON TAKES A JUMP AT A LOCAL RACE TRACK IN OREGON. HE COMPETES IN OVER 20 RACES A YEAR. Sophomore Pierce Matson loves racing motorcross. He first started when he was eight years old when he was inspired by one of his sister’s friend that was also in the sport. His first race was a tough one for him because he said he was nervous because the big jumps that he saw in front him but after his first jump he said it wasn’t so scary anymore. Now he says jumping is his favorite part of racing. He said before racing he was always on his dirt bike because he loved to be on his bike. He said one of his disadvantages is that everyone else is older and have more experience. On his spare time he is trying to get better at home so that he can be the best he can when it comes up to racing a lot of people in the next race. He studies the tracks before racing so he knows everything about the track.
His family is very supportive of him because he loves the sport and takes time in doing new things to make him better. Just this year he has raced about 20 times against racers older then him. The bike that he rides is a Kx450f. He loves to race with bike because it is faster than any of his other bikes and he gets really high on jumps which he loves to do. The scariest moment he has been was when one of his bikes clutches fell off during a race when his left side of the bike hit the ground. When this happened he was scared because he really didn’t know what to do but pick up his bike. But after that he has done really well in his races and practicing so that he can get better for the next one.

State was incredibly fun this year, even if Quail Valley was difficult and a little windy. I placed 25th. I hope to keep improving and come back as a senior to challenge the top girl golfers in the state.

This movie happened to be outstanding leaving the audience really thrilled especially because it is based on the Avengers. The movie came out in theaters in May 6, 2016 and turned out to be a fascinating movie since “Deadpool” came out. The casting featured of Robert Downey Jr (Iron Man) , Chris Evans (Captain America) , Tom Holland (Spider Man) and more. The effort that was put in this movie really turned out great, making this fascinating and a 9 out of 10 . Something that really got the audience really thrilled and get into the movie is choosing a side between Captain America and Iron Man. Also something that got the audience pumped was the fact that Spider Man and Black Panther appeared due to them not usually being in Marvel’s Avengers movies.

The Van de Veere dance studio here in McMinnville is a well-known and well represented establishment that despite its reputation is often out of the limelight and thought of as a private or distant place. However, many

do a lot of things outside of the studio such as going out to eat burritos or going bowling. It’s not always easy trying to balance out being a dancer and good high school student all the time though,” said Braedon. He went on to describe that it’s not always for the faintest of heart but you can do it if you have the passion. The friendship built up between the dancers as well as the exercise and self-expression are all parts of the studio which make it all worthwhile. Van de Veere is to dancers as Wortman Stadium is to football and soccer players. It is not simply a place in which dancing is practiced but a place where sport is practiced and friendships are made. McKay went on to say, “I find it beautiful to be able to combine athleticism and art in creative forms that express so much emotion.” As a senior Mckay is just one example of somebody who has gone through the Van de Veere studio since a young age. MHS has attendees of Van de Veere in all age groups, Mckay and Braedon are just a few examples. The Van de Veere studio has become home to many students in and out of McMinnville and will continue to do so for many years to come.
I can see people that are really into action movies and comic books really enjoying this particular movie because it has comedy, action and it is more unique due to not being the basic “Good vs Evil.” In order to understand the movie you would need to watch the other Marvel movies to know why the characters are the way they are and comprehend how everything began and know their backgrounds. Now this movie is based on the different ideologies between Captain America and Iron Man causing a division between the avengers which is something that you would not really expect from them fighting one another. Overall the fighting scenes were very outstanding and precise, making the movie come to life and leaving the audience satisfied and really engaged into the movie and overall making this another successful movie.

It also has customer service that makes you feel good. This pizza place is always a great place to bring your date!

This pizzeria gives off a very chill and mellow ambience. It’s like a “man cave” with its arcade games and a place for parties. Mikey’s has great customer service and they were very kind when serving. In addition to food, Mikey’s Pizzeria also serves frozen yogurt which is great on a hot summer day. When you get your pizza, Mikey’s gives you all you paid for, sometimes even more. All the pepperoni you could ever dream about, but not too much.

JAKE FOWLERS’ TOP CONSPIRACY THEORIES Alright Grizzzlies. The time has come for something new and outrageous to put a spin on What’s Bruin. Conspiracy Theories. That’s right, crazy (but somewhat believable) theories from our soceity that will blow your mind. Let’s go.

PAUL MCCARTNEY DIED AND WAS REPLACED This conspiracy theory has been circulating since 1969, since rumors began to spread that the REAL Paul McCartney died in a car crash in 1966, and was replaced by an impersonator before the recording of The Beatles’Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. The supposed evidence behind this theory consists solely of “clues” left in certain Beatles songs, along with alleged symbolism on the bands’ album covers. Somehow, people still believe this.

THE MOONLANDINGS WERE FAKED There have been so many doubts leveled at the moon landing and each one can be accurately debunked, but conspiracy theorists simply do not want to hear the cold, hard evidence. The prevailing argument when it comes to theorists’ questioning the moon landing is that the flag moves as though it were in a breeze, thus meaning that the moon landing absolutely had to take place in some sort of studio. However, this theory isn’t taking into account that the lack of air in space would cause the movement of the flag after it had been planted to continue for a lengthy period of time, thus meaning that it wasn’t a breeze that caused its movement, but rather movement itself.

YODA RETURNS AS REBEL LEADER
There are a number of people who believe that Hitler is still alive and also that he was somehow involved in the 9/11 attacks against the US. While this theory obviously doesn’t have much credibility, the most prevailing belief among theorists is that Hitler actually didn’t commit suicide in that fateful bunker, but rather he escaped to Argentina where he lived a secluded, peaceful life for the rest of his days.
Yoda didn’t really die, he has returnded as the leader of the rebel force in McMinnville. He was spotted at the parade this year on Third Street. Luke Skywalker was also spotted as he rallies the rebels against Kylo Ren. Luke’s sister, Leia, still distraught about Han Solo, was seen wandering around near Community Plate with a cappuccino.
