MACA Worth Saving MACA Closes Next Year, Students Scrambling to Figure Out Credits

The modern world is defined by the media. Apps, films, logos, and advertisements are a part of most people’s daily lives, and artists are the creators of all of these things. One would think that the pathway that trains students for one of the fastest growing industries would be among a school’s top priorities. But despite global statistics and local support, the Media Arts and Communications Academy is being shut down- and what will happen to it, we don’t yet know.

The academy, most commonly abbreviated as MACA is a pathway school for students pursuing careers in areas such as graphic design, post production, visual journalism, and special effects-all of which are increasing in demand as technology becomes more integral in our society.

The school claims that MACA is a redundancy, and should be folded into other pathways. The Megan Peak Visual Arts and Publishing and Guest Writer Broadcasting pathways do have some traits similar to MACA, but the experience and focus are very different.

A major aspect of MACA that will soon be lost is its biannual PBL Exhibition. In addition to their regular course work, MACA requires students to develop formal presentations on topics of their choice.

They must incorporate science, language arts, or social studies, include

a well-rehearsed speech, and a minimum of three supporting media pieces. Community members, teachers, peers, and a panel of judges attend the exhibition. Students learn to speak in public, apply school education to real life, create and utilize media, work as and for a community, think critically, learn from others’ work, present themselves formally, research…The list of benefits of PBL goes on and on as no other program at McMinnville High School can claim. Mac’s Got Spirit Yes, We Do

Massive student crowds were the norm for this year’s basketball games. Junior Bryce Clinton submitted a video for the Best Student Section for OSAA.

There is no doubt that McMinnville High School has the greatest amount of school spirit in the state of Oregon. During every basketball game, the student section is crammed full of fans wearing school colors and supporting the basketball team.

Junior Bryce Clinton recently put together a two and a half minute video displaying Mac High’s tremendous student section. “I think that we have the best student section in the state, hands down,” said Clinton. The video is on YouTube for everyone to see and vote on. “I don’t think this video just helped our student body, I think it helped the entire world,” said Clinton.

Vernon Takes the Helm of Blossoming Program Jeremy Vernon leads the girls’ golf team this spring as their new coach

Jeremy Vernon, the new golf coach, will be heading up the girls team this spring. Vernon has been golfing for 12 years and has been very passionate about improving his skills. He can be found frequently attending Michelbook Country Club.

Vernon said, “I have been a member at Michelbook for the last three years.

So, in the last three years I have really tried to see how good I can get.”

Having started playing at age 24, Vernon remembers the struggles of

beginners, giving him an understanding how newcomers feel. “I know how difficult it can be, but I know the rewards are great and it’s exciting to see kids get better at the game of golf,” said Vernon. For those who have never golfed before and are scared of messing up, don’t fear because this is a new experience for the whole team as this is Vernon’s first year coaching a golf team.

Vernon will also be assisted by Coach Dwight McFadden. “He’s an

extremely good golfer and he is very good at the technical pieces of the swing… So, I’m also excited to learn from Dwight,” said Vernon.

Because of Vernon’s competitive nature he is also excited to be around competitive tournaments and have his kids compete. “I’ve only played in a couple tournaments that have been more for fun. So, to be around real tournament players I think will be an exciting experience, not only for my but for the kids involved.”

MACA’s closure impacts all MHS Students Next Year

McMinnville School District’s decision to close MACA campus and integrate the pathway into the Visual Arts and Publishing and Broadcasting pathways at MHS is a controversial decision that greatly affects the future of countless students at both campuses.

Students currently attending classes at MACA will be forced to transfer their entire schedule to the main campus.

Meanwhile, current freshman will have their MACA pathway courses integrated with the visual pathway courses on Main Campus.

While some believe that they will be forced to choose classes that may not apply to their future career or college plans, this merge between the Main Campus visual pathway and MACA program may actually streamline course options and lead to more advanced courses.

The Bruin also sees how some MACA students may feel as if their pathway is being sacrificed.

MACA campus is vastly different than at the main campus, where students take art classes as an elective, and not as a professional focus.

MACA students receive a unique educational experience that cannot be compared to that of the main campus- the smaller, family-oriented program allows students to feel comfortable around their peers, who have similar post-high school goals.

We have a diverse campus of students with various learning needs and it may be too difficult for the high school to accomodate every student need.

While merging the two programs may not be ideal for MACA students and lead to more crowding in the high school, The Bruin believes that the merge will ultimately focus the two programs.

Although MACA students may be upset about the change, The Bruin welcomes them to the main campus and hopes to see future students join with our Media pathway.

BRUIN IS BACK, BABY! After ASB cut the Bruin down to two issues this fall, Bruin Editor Emily Neel went back and secured funding for three more issues. We hope next year’s leadership crew follows their bylaws and communicates to clubs before making important funding decisions. We’re glad to be able to provide more issues for the student body.

The decision to close MACA was announced March 6.

Megan Peak’s guest editorial illuminates the positive impact it has made to MHS students. Although students are now left to figure out complicated schedules at the main campus next year, The Bruin hopes this will simplify the two pathways. We appreciate the work done by MACA staff & welcome them back to the main building.

After Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych was ousted from office this February, Russia has placed armed forces in the Crimean region. Though the world has yet to see any amred forces violence, riots are prevalent and other countries are scrambling to find a solution to Russia’s bold move.

TOO MUCH TRASH The freshmen have been kicked out of The Den many times so far this year, but they’re not the only ones who have been carelessly littering. Trash can be found all over the building. It’s a real burden for our custodians to clean up along with our Life Skills Class. Don’t be slobs.

New Storefronts Greet Customers in Historic Downtown New food offerings downtown

Downtown Third Street seems to always be changing, and there are some new additions to the heart of McMinnville.

Peirano and Daughters is an Italian sandwich and sub shop. They serve subs, soup, and also have a wine bar featuring local wines.

They also are a market that sells a variety of cooking supplies most of which would not be found elsewhere in large grocery stores.

The Willamette Art Showroom is also a new addition to the downtown association. This venue provides a gallery in which local artists can display and sell their art. The art varies widely from carving and sculpting, to panting and pop art. All the pieces of art are made by local artists so purchases support local artisans.

Pura Vida Cuisine and Arte was founded by Ricardo a Latin-American style chef, and Carmen, a Costa Rican artist. They made a place that served natural and delicious food with a very welcoming environment utilizing the simplicity in art to make it look great.

The Gem is a grill and saloon that is centered on a Cajun style. One could expect great service and very good food. They serve original cocktails and food that uses the southern style spice and barbeque. They are complemented with friendly staff and a great ambiance in reviews.

by Hannah Lundeen Thirty years ago, joining a high school sports team for disabledstudents was simply not an option. Through time these policies have changed, and students with disabilities have been able to come out of seclusion and be incorporated into mainstream activities and competitive sports. New to McMinnville High School this year is the Integrated Sports program, which has brought together a variety of students all striving to perfect their individual athleticism and move forward as a unified team.

“We are using the P.E. classes to practice and get ready for games,” said math teacher and Integrated Sports coach, Michael Gower. Currently, the students in the class are focusing on basketball, using the P.E. time to strengthen their skills so that they will eventually be ready to compete against other integrated sports teams in the area. Just like any other gym class, it consists of stretching, going through drills, and refining skills, but is specifically tailored to include everybody, whether they have a disability or not.

Lifeskills teacher Charlotte Smail believes bringing the Integrated Sports program to Mac High is a step in the right direction. “The law recently changed saying that schools now have to offer alternative and integrated sports, which is good.” she said. “In the entire history of the United States, nobody with disabilities has been on a sports team, except for a manager or a ball boy that would only get to play for a little bit if the teams lets them.” Although that is very positive, it is still limiting to students with disabilities, who cannot fully participate as a member of the team. Not allowing students to participate in any activity just because of physical or mental inabilities is not only discriminating, but it restricts students to fulfill their own individual goals and aspirations.

Students join the Integrated Sports program for a variety of reasons.

“I mostly did it for myself, and it’s taught me a lot,” said junior Cervando Medina. “I always thought life’s rough and high school sucks, but then I go in that class and everyday people with disabilities always try their best no matter what.”

Others, such as senior Arisa Larmay, became a part of the program to make a difference in the lives of her fellow peers. “It’s a great feeling when

you can help other students experience success and know that you can support them,” Larmay said.

Bringing Integrated Sports to Mac High is just one step in making our school a more positive, accepting environment. The most important part of the program is that students have fun, which naturally breaks down social barriers, bringing out the best in people. “I like meeting new friends and playing sports with people,” said David Knutz, a junior in the lifeskills program.

Many times, students with disabilities are unconsciously singled out, but when they can interact and play with their peers, it shows how much more alike we are than different. “A lot of it has to do with the perception of how people are looked at because when you have the mixed teams,” Smail said. “Students with disabilities are seen more as real people versus ‘that disabled person.’”

It is normal, however, to be standoffish in the beginning, as it takes time for a group to bond together.

“I was nervous at first,” said junior Nicki McConkie. “Although, now we are a lot closer and are always cheering each other on.”

“Students who have never been in my class are not as interactive, at first,” said Smail. “But already those barriers are breaking down. We learn by example, and they’re seeing students who already know how to interact.”

Next year the team plans on competing against other groups in Oregon as well as doing more promotions and fundraisers to get the word out. Participation in the class goes farther than doing any ordinary gym class; it gives you the chance to make a difference in the lives of your peers, and in return, change your life as well.

“It’s a great feeling when you can help other students experience success and know that you can support them.”

MORP gets more bizarre EASA Students Send Beetles Into Space

In early May, a group of students, predominately from the Projects 4 class offered at EASA, hope to send a project they have been working on to the International Space Station. The program, which takes place in the Nanolab at EASA, is done through Valley Christian Schools in California in coordination with the company Nanoracks.

Senior Michael Cox said about the experiment “It’s a work experience that will teach lessons beyond the technical aspects.” The experimental team has been giving presentations to local organizations as well as constructing their project. Cox said “This teaches us how to present what we’ve been doing in a professional manner.”

The students within the program have created a habitat in which the students involved will monitor the biological effects zero gravity has on dermestid, or skin beetles. The expected result is that the exoskeletons of the beetles will become less dense. Originally, two projects were built so if one fell behind, a backup existed.

Cox is the lead programmer, and as his title implies, he programs the project and talks with the electrical team. The project is outfitted with a light source and fan to sustain the beetles, as well as a camera in order to monitor the progression of the experiment. Cox said, “The programming communicates what the hardware has to do in order to execute the experiment.”

The Nanolab will receive updates from the astronauts at the Space Station every three days. After 30 days on the Space Station, the beetles will be returned to the team of students at the Nanolab, where the team will be able to further analyze data. “When we get the beetles back, we hope to breed the surviving beetles in order to see if there are any lasting effects from living in zero gravity,” said Cox. The ability for students from McMinnville High School to collaborate on a large scale project is invaluable. “You are more ready to tackle any opportunity and not be intimidated by the scale of it.” said Cox.

Mr. Mac High Contestants Gear Up for the Big Event

It’s that time of year again. Walking down the hallways and hearing the big, 10 gallon water jugs, filled with money banging around on the inside. Everyone knows what that means: it’s Mr. Mac High season. The male pageant is made up of 13 Mac High boys. They compete to raise as much money as they can for Doernbecher Children’s Hospital within a seven month period.

All of their hard work is topped off with a show that will not only entertain the guests, but raise awareness about the cause.

The contestants consist of juniors Craig Cooper, Lane Hessel, and Walter Stahl. For the senior boys it includes, Robby Thomas, Roman Yoder, Jordan Potter, Bryce Anderson, Ehren Cahill, Stephen Gilliat, KJ Smith, Jacob Porter, Efren PAGE 12 March 20, 2014

“Being new to this, I was excited for the hospital visit back in January,” said Stahl. “Going to Doernbecher gave me a first-hand look at where all of my hard work is going. It made things more personal.”

Not only does one lucky boy get the benefit of winning the title “Mr. Mac High” but as a whole, the group of guys gets the satisfaction of knowing that all of their hard work is paying off for a great cause, win or lose.

ProStart Demonstrates Culinary Skill in Portland

by EMILY NEEL McMinnville High School’s ProStart team competed in Oregon’s ProStart Culinary Championships this year on March 2 in Jantzen Beach. This was the only team competition to occur this year. The team consisted of Alyssa Maurer, Alex Moye, Adam Israel, Bailey Dreibelbis and Garrett Stolp.

The team was selected in December, a little later than usual, due to a switch in mentors from the previous year.

ProStart coach Carolyn Nyquist said, “It is an extremely complex competition and our team attempted a menu with a high degree of difficulty.”

At the competition they served an appetizer of pistachio crusted ravioli, an entrée of three types of rabbit, and a desert of lemon panna cotta. These high quality courses had to be prepared on two butane burners within an hour time limit, which is extremely difficult. The menu was particularly difficult this year, so congratulations to the members of the team for their hard work.

Nyquist said, “Although they didn’t place at the competition, they received a lot of compliments on their work.”

There will be no more team competitions, but ProStart students will continue to work hard in preparation for individual competitions.

Masterful Classic “The Crucible” Opens at MHS

Facebook Fades in Popularity with Teens

by ERICA WOOD We all remember when Facebook came along. Myspace lost a huge amount of its users to the APP REVIEW new site. Today it seems that this pattern is repeating with a wave of new social media sites, the most popular being Instagram, Twitter, Vine and Tumblr.

Facebook isn’t losing ground with all age groups though. It seems that older generations seems comfortable with Facebook, and are sticking to it. “I think that Facebook is going to be more used by our parents,” said sophomore Zaira McKay. “When I go

They’re with the younger websites! “I think they allow you to be more artistic,” said McKay. “They’re also more short and sweet.”

Junior Gina Madrigal HALEY SWINTH / The Bruin has been dubbed “Facebook Famous,” due to her many Facebook friends and all of the ‘likes’ she gets on her posts. Yet Madrigal doesn’t use the once-favored site as much as she used to. “I use Twitter and Instagram more,” said Madrigal. “Plus, Facebook has a lot of drama.”

An annual report released by Facebook shows the company’s awareness of their declining empire as a result of new sites. The reports said “We believe that some of our users, particularly our younger users, are aware of and actively engaging with other products and services similar to, or as a substitute for, Facebook.”

Many of these newer sites are aimed for young adults, who are notoriously indecisive. Therefore, it is only a matter of time before a new, groundbreaking social media site comes about, making all the ones we love so much today a thing of the past.
