by EMILY NEEL In the crowded hallways of Mac High, students carry on conversations and throw phrases around that most other students wouldn’t blink an eye at.

But for those to whom the phrases are targeted, the words used can have more of an impact than others may know. Words such as ‘gay,’ ‘stupid,’ ‘idiot,’ and other profanities are tossed around constantly without meaning.

“Just because something isn’t hurtful to you, doesn’t mean it’s not hurtful to other people,” said counselor Julie Crandall.

Other times, the insult is intended. People may take jabs at their friends’ appearances, among other things.

“There is a fair amount of students that are hurt or upset by things said in the halls by both friends and strangers,” said Crandall.

It is common for people to talk behind others’ backs, as well as talk to other people about someone else just loudly enough for the victim to hear the insult. Crandall said she also notices a lot of negative comments about people’s intelligence.

Insults based on appearance can be particularly disturbing because the targeted student may not have the means to purchase different clothing or change the way they look. Even if the insults are made in passing and without meaning, the victims will most likely start to believe the hurtful things said about them.

For those targeted by these insults, Crandall said, “I would encourage them to talk to that person if they feel comfortable. It may be a miscommunication.” She suggests if the student is uncomfortable confronting the person who insulted them to talk to an adult who can help mediate a conversation or address the issue.

There are ways to curtail insults in the hallways. By refusing to take part in the insults, students are setting a good example for others. It can be difficult to intervene in the case of bullying, but the more people that do, the less likely the bully is to continue.

Positive phrases have a significant impact too. Words of encouragement to someone going through a hard time can boost a person’s mood and empower them, which they may feel like passing on to other students.

“It is amazing that the people who gave these impacting words are people that didn’t even know them,” said Crandall. “Sometimes the positive words are the most powerful. Saying ‘hi’ to someone you don’t know can also be a positive thing.”

Principal Kris Olsen said, “As a father, I know my words have profound impact on my daughters.

I know my words matter. Positive words make you feel really good, while negative words make you feel really bad.”

Nonetheless, high school students still struggle with understanding the impact the word ‘retard’ holds when they carelessly use it incorrectly. It is a term for intellectual disability, but people casually use it to insult other people and objects. ‘Retard’ is never used in a positive way.

Lifeskills teacher Charlotte Smail said, “The Lifeskills students understand more than people think they do. The students know what it means, and know it’s harmful.”

In the Lifeskills classroom, students are taught about their disability and what people might say.

“They are unlikely to confront the speaker,” said Smail. “People may think it doesn’t affect them, but their face doesn’t always reflect how they feel.”

Though offensive language still exists, MHS is generally encouraging and positive toward the Lifeskills students. “We have really good students who want to be peer tutors and help,” said Crandall.

“Many students try to reach out and interact to learn about the Lifeskills students,” said Smail.

Most of the time when the word ‘retard’ is used, it is because the students may be ignorant of the word and its impact. Continued education will hopefully seal the remaining divides between the students.

Remember, you wouldn’t replace the word ‘retard’ with other highly offensive terms, so think before you speak.

Words have an effect on people no matter where you go; the effect is not limited to school.

Whether it is how you speak to your siblings, strangers on the street, or your teachers, your words will affect their actions and views of you.

Olsen said, “Words stick with you. We have to be careful about the words we choose.”

Gabrielson BRINGS HIS

Linfield standout Wes Gabrielson brings his talent to the boys’ tennis team for his fourth year as coach

by BRUIN STAFF Wes Gabrielson fell in love with tennis when he was just five years old.

He was 15 when he started playing competitively and decided this would be his chosen sport. He played all four years at Sprague High and after honing in his skills he attended Linfield College to join the tennis team under coach Carl Swanson.

After graduating Gabrielson coached as an assistant for Linfield in 2008 before taking the head tennis coach at MHS in 2009.

“I love the sport and working with the kids and seeing them progess over the four years,” said Gabrielson. He coached this year’s seniors when they were freshman.

Senior stand out Will Worth has been a varsity player all four year and he is the #1 doubles player the past two years. For him, Gabrielson has been a role model, “Mr. Gabrielson is probably one of the best players in the Pacific Nortwest in his age groups and he is the one most inspirational and motivational coached I have ever had. I feel honored to have been coached by him for four years,”said Worth.

Now, after four years coaching Gabrielson is confident that this year the team can finish with a solid record much like his old Linfield team.

The current record for the team is 2- 1 with the loss being a close one to Newberg.

“We get to play every team twice though so I’m confident that we’ll beat them next time,” said Gabrielson. “Tualatin will be a tough win as well.”

The team’s standouts this year include Nathan Johnson who is the #1 in singles and Adam Kiff and Will Worth who are the #1 in doubles. This year’s team looks to take the District title and take a good number of athletes to the state competition.

Gabrielson played tennis at Linfield for four year and then became the assistant coach in 2008. He has coached the MHS boys’ tennis team since 2009.

Grapplers Make School History

Wrestling State Champions: Seniors Jared Sublet and Tiger Paasch claimed state championships at the OSAA 6A State Wrestling Championships Feb. 23 at the Memorial Coliseum. Sublet was the champion at 132 pounds and Passch at 170 pounds. This is the first time since 1987 that MHS has had an individual state champion.

In addition, junior JT Barnes placed second in the 152 weight class and Bryce Branson placed fifth in the 120 weight class.

State Participants: A total of nine wrestlers represented MHS at the state competition. The Grizzly team placed fifth overall with 87 points. David Douglas finished first with 146 points followed by Oregon City [126], Roseburg [120], and Hillsboro [117.5]. The Coach: Head wrestling coach Shawn Keinonen said, “This year has been a lot of fun. The wrestling team worked extremely hard going 17-3 overall in dual meets.

With a highlight victory over Newberg (first in 30+ years) and 9-0 league dual meet record ( Region Champions).

Penn Sumner and Jack Anderson showed off their musical talents on the Macstock Stage during the Battle of the Bands competition. The musicians were joined by other local talent to showcase Mac High performances.

by BEN Schieber This year’s Battle of the Bands presented a broad array of musical styles, performers, instrumentation and volumes. Organized by Macstock Productions, with assistance and P.R. by our very own A.S.B., the competition pitted seven bands against one another in a musical competition that shocked, gladdened, inspired, and entertained.

First in the lineup was a band by the name of Murder Creek. The group is composed of seniors Alison and Lauren Ulbricht as well as Noah Shumway and Brian Farris, who do not attend Mac High.

Murder Creek played three songs: Lost in My Mind

by The Head and The Heart, I’ve Just Seen a Face by the Beatles, and L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N. by Noah and the Whale.

The group stood and sang from the front of the cluttered, greenly-lit stage, and their clear vocals rose above their competent, if uninspired instrumentation.

The band’s real strength lay in the heart-wrenchingly beautiful harmonies and excellent vocal blending.

Murder Creek’s rendition of Lost in My Mind was one of the best pieces performed the whole night.

For an astounding change of pace, the Christian hard rock band Bless and Defy took to the stage with a raucous and thoroughly enjoyable sound. The four musicians: Ethan Simpson, Jacob Baltzell, Kelsey Bleck, and Lukas Simpson presented a rather loud set which included their original songs: Wrath, Cast Me Down, and Shadows. The aggressive tone of the Simpsons’ and Baltzell’s singing paired with the blasting guitars made for an unexpected but captivating vessel for the Christian themed lyrics.

The next band, in many ways, defies description.

by Bruno Mars. Supported by excellent bass and drums, and brightened by vocals, guitar and piano, the audience was treated to a warm, full sound.

Cool As A Double Freaking Rainbow was the next to hit the stage, and they did so with startling force. Eric Myers, JefKelsey Black plays the drums in the Battle of the Bands Competition. fery Leach, Jeremy Leach, Ryan Black was a part of three different bands.

Despite the shameless plug to visit their Facebook page, Cool As A Double Freaking Rainbow offered a very entertaining set.

When The Big Friendly Giants began to play, the appreciative cheers that had accompanied Jack Anderson, Penn Sumner, Katie Pardee, Manny Humlie and Kelsey Bleck’s arrival on stage quickly faded in appreciation of the refreshing acoustic style. The music was led by a broad string sound, and punctuated by harmonica and Sumner, Anderson and Pardee’s ringing harmonies.

The upright base and soft drums provided a foundation for story-telling lyrics and the friendly tones of banjo and mandolin. They played a wonderful rendition of The Prettiest Thing by David Childers and followed it with a more fully instrumented and more masculine take on Lost in my Mind, the piece played earlier by Murders Creek.

The final band was called Ill-Tre, a combination of the first names of each the performers: Trinedad

Ovalle and Ileana Harnett. After a curiously misplaced and not altogether well received religious message, the duo began to play. Ovalle’s passionate performance dwarfed the back tracks and Harnett’s singing. However, the two performers complimented each other well and finished out the evening on a high note, performing their original songs Burnin’ Belief and He Runs it All. After a novelty performance by the remnants of last year’s winner The Side Project, and a couple of percussion battles, the finalists were announced.

They are as follows in order of their appearance; Murders Creek, Bless and Defy and Big Friendly Giants.

The bands will play and compete at an assembly in the spring and the winner of that assembly, as chosen by the student body, will win a monetary prize as well as the opportunity to play at the end-ofthe-year concert; Macstock 2013, which will also be presented by Macstock Productions.

The annual Battle of Bands is a popular event, but this year left us wondering about some of the performances. Some bands did not take the event seriously and were unprofessional. The transitions between bands was LONg and the audio wasn’t working. We even had one band cook hamburgers on stage. Hmmm.

activity Anonymous carries out, we believe that the public should be aware and have access to every document and secret the government attempts to conceal.

When the authorities fail to pursue and accomplish justice and human rights are being violated, we need groups like Anonymous to keep things in order.

This was evident in August, 2012 in Steubenville, Ohio, where a group of high schools gang raped an unconscious 16-year-old girl at a party and received protection because of their athletic ability and small-town reputation.

Injustice is injustice, and sometimes it takes lesser wrong to expose a more substantial wickedness.

Ping pong tables clog up the lower commons and spill over into First Hall and the entrance to the Student center. Lunch becomes hazardous when paired with flying plastic balls, and constantly retrieving the ping pong balls is an irritant for those who frequent the tables outside the Action corner.

What is fun for some is annoying for many.

YOGA PANTS DAY ODD Yoga Day? Really? We are all for the dress up days, but this was a miss. We think “Yoda” Day would have been a better choice. Better to have Star Wars fans break out the gear instead of the tight pants of both girls AND guys.

The Story Behind ‘The Power of Words’ Article

by Hannah Lundeen Some readers may questions why The Bruin choose to do a cover illustration that contains words that are utterly offensive.

The editorial choice to actually write those awful words on the cover illustration was not taken lightly by the editorial board.

At first, we wanted to avoid them, water them down.

We took a second look and changed our minds after speaking seeking input from school groups and principal Kris Olsen.

The point of the article is to say loud at clear that these words are offensive and we don’t want them uttered any longer in our hallways.

The words we use as humans can have a direct effect on Hannah Lundeen the day or life we News Editior have, and students should be aware of the words they say and the effect they have on their peers.

The process began with meeting with the R-word club president Caitlynn Cantrell and Olsen.

The editors went back and forth on whether the Bruin should print the R-word and other controversial names in the story. Both Cantrell and Olsen were assured that by using those controversial words, we are not sugar-coating the topic, but are facing it head on.

Let’s face it, we all hear these words everyday in the halls of this school and most student do nothing to stop it.

Words, whether positive or negative, directly affect our outlook on life and the way we go about our lives.

It’s time to stop saying them and also to say something when we hear these insulting words.

Don’t walk away and pretend you did not hear people say these offensive words. Stand up for the person who is being bullied and stop allowing our school to be filled with ugliness.

Senior Eliza Hallet received the Daughters of the American Revolution [DAR] scholarship. Hallet then advanced to the Regional Competition. Bravo.

Senior Jack McKeegan has been accepted into the University of Notre Dame. Odds of making it? Only 13 percent of students from the West Coast make it. Jack is also a 4.0 student MHS. Congrats.

Superintendent Maryalice Russell was selected to be the Oregon Superintendent of the Year and was one of four national finalists.
