ProStart Takes Nationals Members of the McMinnville culinary team bring home pride at National ProStart Invitational

Earlier this April, McMinnville’s ProStart team left their state title behind to compete at the National Pro Start Competition in South Carolina, and showcase their talents in the kitchen.

Their journey to nationals truly began at the beginning of the year when the team was formed. Krista Carpino, the ProStart advisor and Culinary Arts teacher at McMinnville High School, began her twelfth year involved in ProStart like any other: by holding tryouts. Out of the 15 participants who tried out, five were selected who would each fulfill an important role on a team formulated for success. As a team of five, only four cook at a given time, however the fifth, also called the expeditor, holds a crucial role to the team. Wherein, in the past, the fifth member was the alternate who would take over if someone was sick or injured in some way, the expeditor has now taken on the role of an “on-floor coach,” Since the advisor can’t have any contact with the students during competition, the expeditor is meant to keep everyone on track and make sure everything runs smoothly. Carpino explains, “An hour of cooking goes by really fast, so if they’re having anxiety or panicking they’re not focusing on everything so that expeditor role is really important.”

And the competition environment is truly what one would call “high-pressure.” The team is expected to prepare two identical appetizers, entrees, and desserts within 60 minutes. They are evaluated by judges and are docked points from an initial hundred for any errors. If that isn’t hard enough, the students face restrictions such as having no electricity or running water, and being confined to two 8-foot tables with gas burners.

The majority of the preparation, however, is executed outside of competition, where the team dedicates time and funds to choosing recipes, buying and transporting ingredients, and practicing skills.

It was all this dedication that allowed McMinnville’s ProStart team to claim the state title against 14 other teams in February and advance on to Nationals. In preparation for the next competition, the team made minor adjustments to their dishes. Carpino states, “Because our competition was Feb. 19 and we didn’t leave until the end of April we changed things based on the judges feedback, so on our scoresheets they didn’t really like our entree so we kind of morphed that into a new appetizer.” Having

done such, they brought a slight-modified meal to nationals: an appetizer consisting of Oregon Dungeness Crab and a side of purple sticky rice, with an Asian-type slaw topped with a spicy curry sauce, an entree of Pacific Northwest cod served with a lemon beurre blanc and a potato croquette with a pea puree and a garnish of spring microgreens. Carpino adds, in regard to the dessert, “Our judges really like our dessert at state so we didn’t fuss with it too much, with the exception of the crème brûlée.

There wasn’t a cream component and we talked about how whipping cream might be too easy, crème anglais might be too easy, so we made a crème brûlée.” Having come to this conclusion, the team produced a steamed chocolate flourless torte topped with cherry compote and cherry reduction for their dessert at nationals alongside the new crème brûlée .

“HERE ARE FIVE KIDS FROM MCMINNVILLE WHO SHOULD FEEL REALLY PROUD OF THEIR ACCOMPLISHMENTS” -KRISTA CARPINOBut aside from good food and 400 worthy competitors, nationals offered something to this team that, in Carpino’s opinion, is of the utmost value. She said, “The best part was being together as a team. This is my ninth year teaching, this is my twelfth year leading ProStart and this group, they weren’t necessarily friends coming in and that kind of caused a lot of emotions and anxiety, being together from October to April, and I would just equate it to like a family, siblings fight, and so that biggest takeaway for them was the teamwork component.” For these five kids, nationals offered an opportunity to showcase their talents, exercise teamwork, travel, and find success as they placed 25 in the nation. Having watched them and their success, from claiming a state title to showing their worth at nationals, we can all agree with Carpino when she said, “Here are five kids from McMinnville who should feel really proud of their accomplishments.”

Marching for Science People who were upset with the government’s treatment of science marched for their cause

BY BRADY SHIELDS writer On April 22 thousands of people across Oregon marched for science in downtown Portland. The march was driven by a larger march in Washington D.C., which was organized by Bill Nye, affectionately known as, “The Science Guy.” All of the marches on that day centered around one issue: the neglect of science in the federal government. Examples of this neglect include climate change denial, along with cuts to the National Institutes of Health, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the National Science Foundation.

The march started with speeches made by environmental activists and elected officials at Tom McCall Waterfront Park, just under the Morrison Bridge. The speakers included Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-Beaverton) and Congressman Earl Blumenauer (D-Portland).

Their speeches centered on the importance of recognition of scientific evidence.

The demonstrators were finally marching in the streets. From the Morrison Bridge, they headed south on Naito Parkway, west on Jefferson Street, north on 4th Avenue, then east on Pine Street, looping back to the Morrison Bridge, where a science expo took place.

Over the last month, many have run campaigns for the ASB executive board.

Voting for these positions occurred on May 4-5 in language arts classes.

May 8 the new positions were announced. In the position of president and vice president, juniors Alli Robertson and Natalia Rentsch won an uncontested race. “I’m really excited to work with a fresh group of people and create a new sense of unity. I think that there is a lost connection between clubs and ASB and I hope to be able to cover both groups.”

The secretary position went to junior Maddy Gibson over sophomore Sophia Trimble and junior Cameron Basinger.

The position of treasurer was awarded

to junior Caleb Landis, who won over sophomore Lucca Hamina.

While those that did not win positions do not get to serve in the ASB executive board, they are still offered the opportunity to serve the school either through independent actions or by running for a senator or representative position.

Those that will serve on the executive board are offered the opportunity to improve the school in their eyes, as well as take a leadership position in things such as club funding, Homecoming, Unity Week and many other activities and events throughout the school.

ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENTS

Last year the passing of the $89 million bond showed the commitment of the McMinnville community toward the creation of a successful and sustainable MHS community. As the bond has progressed, however, a few problematic flaws have become apparent in the planning process that the community was not completely made aware of. Despite the overall success of the bond a few mishaps threaten the ultimate stability and sustainability of the MHS community.

First is the issue of the parking lot. The fact of the matter is that the bond was passed in order to increase the student capacity of MHS yet there was only a two spot net change in the parking lot. Considering the bond is expected to allow MHS to increase their population to 2,800 over the course of a few years, it is natural to assume they would add at least a few hundred spots to an already bursting parking lot yet this was not the case. This seems to contradict the central idea of increasing the sustainability of MHS because if the students have nowhere to park, how can MHS truly expand.

Second, turn to the auditorium. As a favorite place for class meetings and the heart of a majority of the arts productions at MHS it is again natural to assume this already capped out place would be drastically expanded, yet this was not the case.

Much like the parking lot there was no increase to the auditorium which is concerning considering there is standing room only for both the freshman and sophomore classes and each year the class sizes continue to expand. Soon the auditorium will become unusable for any large event and it is not convenient for say the choir to perform in the gym. The lack of change to the auditorium forces an unnecessary shift in the culture and meeting spaces of MHS. Finally the rainy weather this season has reminded students of just how hard it can be to play spring sports such as baseball, tennis and golf in the Oregon weather. While baseball did receive a shed in the bond, tennis and golf were left out of the project. Many schools have made the shift to indoor golf and tennis facilities, but MHS lags behind in this field of development. Considering

the full cost of the overall project, covering the current tennis course and making a small scale indoor golf arena would be relatively inexpensive. The addition of the indoor facilities would improve the performance and morale of many spring sport athletes.

Don’t get me wrong, the construction of the bond will drastically improve the culture at MHS and I am forever grateful for the unwavering support from the McMinnville community. There was undoubtedly, however, a few major oversights within the planning and execution of the bond that jeopardize the long term sustainability of MHS as a whole. If only the bond had addressed the parking lot and auditorium overcrowding and improved the spring sports facilities, this bond would have truly been perfect.

Way to go, spring sports! MHS is extremely proud of both girls and boys tennis as well as baseball. All of these teams finished as league champions this season and did a great job all year long working hard and representing Mac High well. What an exciting way to end the season for all of the tennis and baseball athletes. Great job, Grizzlies!

PLANT SALE RESULTS McMinnville High School’s horticulture students put on their annual plant sale May 11-12 and it was a huge success yet again.

The hard work put in by students throughout the year is clear in the gorgeous flowers, succulents and other plants that were for sale. In the end, the horticulture department made an incredible sum of over $11,200 that will go towards sustaining the horticulture program.

AP TESTING DONE AP students have been working tirelessly and studying up in anticipation of the upcoming exams. These tests cover a wide variety of subjects and are known to be very difficult, which creates lots of stress for students. These panic-inducing tests, however, are over and students can finally relax. Now it is on to wrapping up the year and preparing for finals.

MORP DISASTER Mac High’s most rambunctious dance had some very intense issues this time around.

13 students were caught by the school with drugs and alcohol on campus. These students were suspended for five days and unable to participate in athletics for 21 days.

POTENTIAL TEACHER LAYOFFS Unfortunate news has reached MHS recently regarding staff. Budget cuts have may lay off over 20 District teachers. This causes fewer elective options and larger class sizes. This tough situation will be even harder on new teachers, who will be the first to let go and are even be put in a lottery to determine job placements.

Substance Abuse Awareness Needed

The Harsh Reality of College Credit Now

Taking college credit classes in high school is presented as the perfect solution to saving money for college, but it isn’t always good path for many students College. It is on the minds of high schoolers from the day they step into the building on their first day, and often before that. It is stressful and scary and expensive. The latter of these factors is one of the key influences in why Mac High’s College Credit Now (CCN) program is so successful. Students are given the opportunity to take classes that would already be offered at our high school, but receive college credit for them as well as MHS credit. This allows a student to take a class in high school for $30 rather than wait and pay upwards of $200+ in a traditional college setting. This sounds ideal to many students, but is it really as perfect as it sounds?

Beginning in the eight grade when the incoming freshmen begin to forecast, CCN classes are advertised as a great way to save tons of money by taking college classes in high school. What is not being mentioned to students, however, is that the Chemeketa credits earned through these courses are only transferable to a small selection of 4-year universities. Colleges like OSU, U of O, and other in-state schools are likely to accept many Chemeketa credits, but that is where the probability of transferable credits begins to drop off. Most out-of-state schools do not accept Chemeketa credit or will only accept a small portion of the classes completed, as I have seen firsthand while touring several private, out-of-state colleges with my sister. This means that students considering applying to out-of-state schools should do some investigation prior to signing up for a class 6

solely for the CCN. According to the “Where We’re Going” data collected from the College and Career Center for this issue of the Bruin, up to 27 percent of college-bound seniors will be attending out of state colleges that will most likely not accept their credits.

Some schools that are outside of Oregon do accept these college credits, but taking a CCN class and registering at Chemeketa does not guarantee that the student will not have to retake the class in college. For example, a student may take an introductory computer science class at MHS /Chemeketa and expect it to apply to the intro computer science course at their dream college, but in reality the course material is completely different and their university will not accept the credit. This is an unfortunate reality for many high-achieving students who aim to attend a prestigious university but go through high school believing that their CCN classes will help them in college. They end up struggling to get in since the classes they thought were impressive don’t count and they didn’t take as many AP and Honors courses as they should have.

While college credit can be an amazing opportunity for students aiming to attend a state school, private university-bound students are getting sold short. AP classes are the way to go for these students, not Chemeketa college classes. The staff at MHS needs to make it clearer that the benefits of CCN are not universal, and aid students in forming a college plan that suits their needs and goals.

Regardless of school year, or decade, even the last half of a century- drugs and alcohol have been a consistent and prevalent issue concerning young adults. This is no issue that can be remedied with one action, and there is no simple quick-fix solution.

This year’s MORP dance resulted in 13 kids caught with drugs or alcohol. Many more under the influence left the dance to escape consequences. Administrators choose to suspend students five days and athletes from sports participation for 21 days.

Rather than punishment and the harmful impact suspension has on education, the administration should have encourage prevention for the safety and benefit of all students.

Recreational substance use among young adults will undoubtedly continue, however, the usage at school events can be significantly decreased through an announced and general knowledge of the consequences prior to the gathering. In making it known, some students who may have originally chosen to drink or use drugs will refrain.

More generally, prevention must address mental illness and the correlation to substance use as self-medication. Often overlooked is the significance of stress and mental disorders as a role in a child’s vulnerability to excessive and dangerous substance use.

Because of the incalculable amount of variables that influence drug use, identifiable causes must become a priority to resolve quickly and efficiently.

It’s time for the administration and Health teachers to collaborate and bring more awareness and education on youth drug and alcohol use. Acknowledge the issue and make plans to help our students become aware of the dangerous impact on their health and well-being.

Five students in the class of 2017 earned the title of valedictorian. This is the highest academic award that a student can earn in high school, making it a prestigious honor. In order to achieve this, these students each maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA, earned an Honors Diploma, and took at least 7 honors courses. Three of these students will be selected to give a short speech during the graduation ceremony on June 2.

features Take A Break Gap years are becoming more and more popular in the United States, and one MHS student is planning to take one

BY ANNIE CHRISTMAN writer Students know the excitement that comes at the end of the school year: 3 months of fun, freedom and possibilities. Coincidentally, we all have felt the impending doom at the end of August with the new year looming ahead of us. Most students, at one point or another, have wished that summer could just last a little longer.

But for seniors, the end of their last school year comes with an option that could extend their free time before moving on to higher education: a gap year.

So what exactly is a gap year? Janae Clifton, a senior who is planning on taking a gap year, explains, ¨A gap year is a time where you can relax and take a break from school, which I really need because school stresses me out.” In other words, a gap year is a year one takes after high school before moving on to higher education, to do with as they please. Gap years are in high desire for many seniors who have endured thir-

teen straight years of schooling and, to put it simply, need a break. Wherein the practice of a gap year isn't as popular in the United States yet, it is a very common option in European countries. Clifton said, ¨I know a lot of people do it in London and Great Britain and I saw a movie about it once and was like “Oh that seems fun, what’s a gap year?” So I asked my mom and she explained and I thought, “Why not, I could use a break from school.¨ Over the past few years the idea has spread across the Atlantic, and more and more American seniors are recognizing the potential of a gap year.

Many explore the gap year as an opportunity to work and save up money for college. Clifton said, ¨I work at the pool as a lifeguard and I’m going to be saving up money for college and I want to go on mission for my church so I’ll also be saving up for that.¨ Now being able to work full time instead of part time, she

expresses how she will have more mobility to plan her next steps in life, ¨I want to save money, I want to find the college I want to go to to study radiology, I’m going to look at scholarships to prepare so I’m ready to go when I get back.¨ Like Janae, a lot of students are taking advantage of a gap year in order to plan for their next big step in life, which for many is college. Janae continues, ¨I’ll have a full year to look into colleges so I don’t have to stress about that while I’m stressing about graduating.¨ And for those who are just looking for a break, travelling is an amazing opportunity that a gap year offers.

Janae plans to travel to Hawaii, and go on mission with her church. There are many programs that encourage the use of the gap year to explore the world, so whether you take a year to work, or to enjoy, or both, a gap year is an option that senior should consider.

Solar Eclipse

Mark your calendars for this major event

BY DEREK MYERS writer The phrase once in a lifetime is thrown around, but this summer there will be a total solar eclipse that may very well be a once in a lifetime event for residents of Oregon and more specifically McMinnville.

On Aug. 21, McMinnville residents will be able to view this event. A solar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Moon, and Earth are perfectly aligned with the path of sunlight being blocked by the Moon resulting in a brief period of total darkness during the daytime.

Solar eclipses are brief, lasting for no more a minute and while not completely rare, it is uncommon to be conveniently located in the path of totality, the area in which the sun is completely obscured by the Moon. The last complete solar eclipse viewed by the continental United States was in 1979 over the Pacific Northwest. The next solar eclipse may be the only one that you are able to see in totality, so don’t miss the opportunity for the experience of a lifetime… literally.

Tennis comes to an end after an impressive performance by the Grizzlies

BY TOMMY DOUGLASS sports editor The boy’s tennis season came to a culmination with the district tournament that resulted in the junior doubles team of Cooper Rich and Nick Denley finishing second and qualifying to state. Despite only sending two people to state, the Grizzlies have had an overall very successful year.This year history teacher Wes Gabrielsen took over the head coaching position from previous coach Alex Martin. Math teacher Doug Barsotti was also added to the coaching staff prior to the season, and despite the change in leadership, the winning remained constant.

Varsity player Ruben Dong said, “Gabrielson has been fantastic. He’s a great coach to have because he’s able to get the team focused and motivated before big matches and that’s really great.” Gabrielsen’s leadership paid off as the Grizzly Boys were able to secure the league title before districts.Denley and Rich weren’t the only ones who had a successful districts, promising strides were made by young players like sophomore Nalen Stephens. Stephens entered the tournament as the number four singles player from McMinnville but after some amazing play he found himself in the quarter finals.

Stephens said, “Playing in districts was a really fun experience for me, and I’d never

played singles seriously until districts. At Districts, I got to the quarterfinals in an upset with the seven seeded person for singles.” Another heartwarming storyline revolved around boys tennis districts. Junior Joe Gullo played on varsity tennis his sophomore year but has spent his entire junior year on exchange in India.

Gullo landed in Oregon late in the evening of May 10th but he arrived at Linfield College early the next morning and spent the entire day cheering on his teammates at their districts.

Gullo said, “It was great to see all the guys play-

“IT WAS GREAT TO SEE ALL THE GUYS PLAYING AND COMPETEING AT SUCH A HIGH LEVEL.” -JOE GULLOing and competing at such a high level.”

From qualifying two players to state, to adjusting to new coaches, to gaining experience and welcoming back a long gone teammate, the boys tennis team had a very productive Districts and a successful season.

Softball caps off another amazing season with a near perfect record

BY EMMA SIEPMANN opinion editor MHS softball is often left unmentioned, but this year’s varsity team is doing exceptionally so far. This team finished league ranked tenth in the state right now and had a 21-5 record. One of the aspects that make this team so strong is the bond between the players; sophomore Lexie McKinley is very grateful for her amazing team that she gets to play with every day.

She said, “Our team is very dedicated and determined to play 100 percent every day. It’s a great group of girls and I am appreciative of having players to look up to as well.” The varsity team is hoping to make it far in playoffs this year.

Pitcher Payton Hudson is wrapping up her second year on varsity and loves the team dynamics as well. “I really like the team chemistry that we have and we are all fairly close with each other. Playing on varsity has helped me improve my skills as a softball player and our

team is just continuing from where we left off last year. We are getting better with every practice and game that we have. I’m super excited to see how far we can go in playoffs.”

Unfortuantely the softball season came to a close on May 24, when the grizzlies lost 7-1 to Tualatin in the second round of the state playoffs.

This year, AP art students got the change to have their art put on show at Linfield College. It was a beautiful display in a clean white room, so that the art on the walls could stand out. There were various types of art, including ceramics, paintings, and drawings. Each artist had their own little section on the wall where their work was displayed.

The students hung statements next to their art to explain their pieces. Zelma Stevens showed off her pen and collage skill with three pieces. “I love pen work, and I display a lot of the emotion of a piece through the sort of line created. I make collages, usually made of random findings in Goodwill hard cover books, random pieces of cardboard, and paint chips.”

Another MHS artist, Lissette Gomez, experimented with different styles as well.

“I love to include bright colors in my art and I have explored with many mediums including paint, charcoal, pastels, ink pen, marker, and more,” she said. Both pieces were extremely detailed and incorporated bright and festive colors.

Another artist who experimented with texture and color was Sydney Schusted.

“My second piece is where I first explored into the medium of chalk which I ended up really liking, and I used this medium a lot more in my other pieces after…” Junior Cameron Basinger displayed 2 pen work pieces. He said, “My two art pieces focus on the power of line work. The first one is a blind contour drawing, which means that I did not look at my paper while drawing.”

This exhibit gave the artists a chance to explore different mediums, try new things, and to show off their individual style. The display closed on May 1, but anyone who had the chance to see it were given front row seats to how hard MHS artists work.

Juan Contreras explains why he decided to be a peer tutor and friend to the kids of the life skills class. Contreras also reveals how the class has helped him as a student and an individual.

Why did you decide to teach AP European History?

A:

Although I spent most of my time at MHS teaching German, my background is in European History, and I have a history degree from a German university. I was teaching a section of regular Euro History back in 2002 when the principal asked me to start an AP program here, and since I really like the subject and didn’t mind the extra work, I agreed.

Do you have any interesting stories you would like to share about your time in Germany?

A:

I’ve lived here longer than in Germany by now, but it’s enjoyable to be able to teach especially the more recent history with a direct connection. I’ve got family history to share going back to my grandpa in World War I and my parents during the Nazi years and even personal experiences growing up and serving in the German army during the Cold War which adds something hopefully interesting to my teaching.

What’s made you want to be a peer tutor?

When I was a boy I never understood why people were how they were and once I got to high school it was a chance for me to interact and possibly help them improve and live there life after high school, so I did and at first I was nervous but I made a huge bunch of new people that I’m happy to call my friends. Some may not speak but the smiles and actions speak much louder than words it’s a great thing I became a part of and one of the best choices I’ve made in my two years in high school.

What’s your favorite part of the class?

Interacting with everyone and learning new things every day and being able to see them grow up to become amazing people and live up to their full potential.

It’s always an amazing feeling when you can be a part of teaching the students something new or even them

What have the life skill students taught you?

A:

All the students have taught me that if you put your mind and determination into something and no matter how many times you give up or get frustrated you will succeed if you push through. Most importantly they have taught me to smile even on my worst days there laughs and smiles are definitely contagious and one of the main reasons you should join.

What do you do in the class?

I talk and play with the students help the staff and look at who I am working with and what we must improve on.

BURKHARD GEBAUER

After taking a few years off, former German teacher Burkhard Gebauer returned this winter to take over teaching AP European History from Katie Kerby, who took a leave of absence for the rest of the year.
