Mr. Mac High was a thrilling experience for all the contestants. They worked all year long to raise thousands of dollars for Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, and they finished up the fundraising season with a large-scale show in front of hundreds of students and staff members.

During the show’s dash-for-cash, members of the audience donated hundreds of dollars to Doernbecher. Representing thirteen different school clubs, from cross country to Psychoastrology, each participant worked hard all year to raise money, and by the show on April 16, the group raised over $20,000 for the children’s hospital.

“Raising money for this was pretty important for me,” said Michael Ordaz, aka Mr. Salsa. “My sister actually goes to Doernbecher a lot because she has a sickness…so I thought, ‘why not raise money for children at Doernbecher?’”

One of the main events of the show involved a display of talent from each performer. Some sang songs, some did daring stunts or dances, while others did comedic skits.

In the end, the cheer team’s Levi Timm took home the crown.

This year’s Mr. Mac High guys put on a great show, with lots of funny moments and displays of talent.

“It felt really good to do it and see all our hard work come together,” said contestant Will Smothers.

The most prevalent topic on nearly all news sources as of late is the 2016 presidential election.

Currently, the presidential primaries are happening, in which the Democratic and Republican parties come out to vote on which candidate will represent their party at the general election in November.

To win the presidential nomination for a certain party, a candidate must win a certain number of delegates. A delegate is someone who is elected by the people to represent them in a conference. While the general population does vote in the primaries, it is the delegates whose votes decide on the candidates. The delegate does however, place their vote based on the wants of the general population.

For the Republican Party, a candidate must win 1,237 delegates and for the Democratic Party a candidate must win 2,383 delegates. In the current race, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton remain the frontrunners for the Republican and Democratic nominations, respectively.

Donald Trump leads the Republican party with 845 delegates, and Ted Cruz is close behind him with 559 delegates. The other Republican candidate is John Kasich; however, he only has 148 delegates, so the chances of him winning the nomination are slim. The other major candidates, Jeb Bush, Ben Carson, Chris Christie, Carly Fiorina, Mike Huckabee, Rand Paul, Marco Rubio, and Rick Santorum have all dropped out.

The Democrats only have two candidates still in the race, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. Clinton is currently in the lead with 1,930 delegates, and Sanders is starting to catch up with 1,189 delegates.

Former nominees, Martin O’Malley, Lincoln Chafee, Lawrence Lessig, and Jim Webb have all dropped out of the race.

Though the number of delegates may not seem close, primaries will be held in numerous states until June. With 21 states that have yet to vote, anything could happen.

Alright students of MHS, the time has come to reflect and reminisce on one of the greatest and craziest nights of the school year. Morp, the dance that everyone in our school looks forward to as a way to let loose and have some fun. The infamous dance was just on April 1st, taking place in our very own Red Gym. “This was probably our most successful Morp ever, definitely the most suc-

“It was nice to come in to school on Monday morning and not have a paper work to fill out,” said Steve Cooper, “2016 was one of the only years that Morp occurred and was troublesome free.”

As the school year begins to wind down, students and staff members have wondered one thing: who is going to be McMinnville High School’s principal for the 2016-2017 year?

When Kris Olsen announced his retirement, the hunt for a new principal began.

As a result, vice principal Tony Vicknair has been selected by the school district to become the leader of McMinnville High School.

“I have worked with Mr. Vicknair since he was a teacher at Patton,” said Kris Olsen, “I am very excited for him and honored to have him become principal at MHS.” “No one that I know could be a better person for the job; Mr. Vicknair knows

Track and Field, Mac High’s most popular and largest sport is off to a strong start. Nearly 200 athletes have been working hard to win their meets and be as fast as they can, hopefully leading to a strong performance at the district meet at the end of the year. The team is led by a strong group of seniors, including Montanna Gubrud, Kendal Obrist and Griffin Williams. Good luck, Grizzlies!

HERO PASSES AT LUNCH

With AP testing just around the corner, many students are beginning to cram and adjust their study habits in hopes of getting a 4, or maybe even a 5. But at the prospect of standardized testing many people are questioning its effectiveness. Is it right to teach students about just a test, if we can track their progress against one another? As far as I am concerned, standardized testing creates unnecessary stress, and competition while also adversely harming the low-income students. The United States should adjust away from standardized testing and instead focus on JOE GULLO helping students later on in their lives.

The first problem with standardized testing is that it places unnecessary stress on the students, and doesn’t help prepare them for the real world. For example, in a situation in which a student is subjected to 4 or 5 hours of homework each night we can easily see the correlation between the number of dropouts and the amount of homework. The problem that we see is that standardized testing either discourages students from

trying to learn and makes them burn out; or alternatively they waste all of their time learning information just for the sake of passing a test. School is supposed to help students segue into adult life, however in the status quo we infringe on that ability.

The second problem that comes about with standardized testing is harms to low-income people. Not only are people in low-income areas subjected to worsened education, but they have almost no chance of getting out of these situations. For example, one argument for standardized testing is that you can see which areas are failing and subsidize them. However, very frequently the subsidies are used as bonuses for teachers or go to wealthier areas or stay in the government. Plus, people have to pay for the tests that they take which is a much larger harm for low-income people.

Overall, standardized testing is a good idea. But low-income people are adversely affected, and people are overly stressed with very little pay off. And every single benefit of standardized testing could just be done on a much smaller scale. Standardized testing inflict huge costs, with very little payoff.

The administration has decided to start giving out HERO passes to students who are in the Commons for lunch before the bell rings. This does allow teachers to get the most out of their 90 minutes of class time and it gives time for the kitchen staff to get lunch ready for students, but many are still upset that they can get punished if their teachers let them out early. HERO passes were implemented to prevent students from being late, not to punish them for being early.

MORP GOES DARK

This year at the beloved MORP dance, the electricity generator went out, leaving Mac High students to dance in the dark. This was completely unplanned and created an abrupt pause during the dance. A blackout like this could potentially be dangerous to students and chaperones, so the school and everyone putting the dance on need to ensure that this doesn’t happen in the future.

For many MHS students, there are only a couple of weeks left until the stressful AP tests are here. It’s now time to cram and review like crazy until the beginning of May. Many students dread this part of the year becuase of the stress that it brings, but everything will be much less stressful as soon as the tests are over!

PRINCE DIES On April 22, the world learned of the death of multigenre artist Prince, who died at age 57. His 40 years in the music industry were extremely influential. It isn’t yet known what caused his sudden and unexpected death, but he will definitely be missed by many music lovers across the globe.

same types of car. In some of the larger cities, all the buildings and the cars and the fashion seem very western and like a scene in an American city.

The part of Africa that I had the opportunity to see- Africa is a huge continent- was a complete mix of traditional and modern. Many times, I’d see a nice, new car driving right next to a donkey pulling hundreds of pounds of eucalyptus wood that would be used with mud to build remote houses.

There would be a woman walking down the street in skinny jeans and oversized sunglasses right next to another woman wearing a long, traditional skirt, an Orthodox head covering and no shoes. I’d see extremely modern buildings with huge glass windows being repaired with wooden scaffolding and only hand-held tools.

The whole continent of Africa is in a period of rapid development right now, and in the near future more areas will be modernized and more people will have access to the technology and luxuries that the western world is already enjoying.

I understand that the vast majority of Americans will never have the chance to go see Africa for themselves, but it’s important to be aware of the way other people live. The next time you’re about to mention the starving kids in Africa, remember that there is so much more to the continent and the people who live there.

Now that I’ve started noticing, I end up hearing references to the “sick, starving children in Africa” almost every single day. It’s become a habit for so many people, but this reference is contributing to a widespread ignorance about actual African culture, and it makes people think that the only side to Africa is the poverty-stricken side, which isn’t true.

Yes, there are starving children in Africa. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity of going to Ethiopia and Kenya this spring break, and I got to see for myself that there are plenty of people who live in poverty and squalor in that area. There are children who live on the streets and beg for food and money because they need to take care of their parents, and there are rural farming families who live a very traditional lifestyle and work tirelessly just for subsistence. In Ethiopia, I saw hundreds HANNAH SIEPMANN of people walking miles with their donkey-drawn carts and baskets of grain on their heads in order to get to the market in the nearest town. Many people do live very traditionally and without the luxuries that are taken for granted in our western culture.

But there are also universities, law schools, med schools, and big hospitals. There are wide freeways and bustling traffic, fancy private high schools, supermarkets, and modern hotels. Most people wear the same clothes that Americans do and drive the

In order to read this article you need to put your phone down. Now look up. How many faces do you see lit up by the glow of a phone screen?

These people are so entranced by simple metal and glass. Snapchat, Twitter, Instagram, Clash of Clans . . . the list goes on and on. It seems that everyone in connected into this virtual world separate from reality. Social media is become an addiction and not a harmless one.Teachers are becoming very peeved about having a phone out in class, Katie Kirby said, “It’s definitely a problem in class and I don’t know EMMA BEYER how to solve it.” Students will have their phones out during class which is a big distraction to students as well the teacher lecturing in front of the class. Administration has revised the phone suspension policy so that a confiscated phone can only be held in the student center until the end of the day instead of until the end of the week, but students still manage to have their phones out during class. Kirby also said that when she sees a phone out is shows a “lack of respect” for the teacher and that’s unacceptable.

It’s not only teachers that are fed up with students on their phones. A student that wants to remain unnamed said, “It is very disrespectful when people are blatantly on their phones and are ignoring the teacher.” The anonymous student said, “The people on their phones are missing out on the opportunity to learn while showing an utter lack of respect towards the people who are trying to give them a better education.”

The high school is not the only place where phones are beginning to be a problem. Kirby said, “The saddest thing as a parent is that I notice at the park that parents are on their phones and not with their kids.”

Junior Cierra Benjamin saw the same problem, “I hate it every time I talk to someone and they’re on their phone.” It takes an outsider to truly see what is happening around the school even if no one else can see it. Social media is great to have and it connects so many people to friends and family that otherwise wouldn’t be able to communicate, and students have the privilege have the ability to obtain information instant through the internet. Some teachers even allow their students to use their phones during class to quick look something up or complete a project. All this technology, however, can be distracting.

ASB CANDIDATES RUN UNOPPOSED AGAIN MCKENNA SUAREZ

NO VOTE, NO VOICE UNOPPOSED CANDIDATES AND ELECTIONS WITH ONLY ONE SET OF CANDIDATES HAVE BECOME THE NORM AT MAC HIGH, LEAVING THE STUDENT BODY WITH LITTLE CHOICE OVER THEIR LEADERS

While ten or fifteen years ago, Mac High had ASB presidential elections with as many as five or six pairs of candidates, for the past few years there have only been one or two candidates, leaving the student body without the choice of who they want to lead them.

This decrease in interest for the position is due to many factors, including the rule implemented around 10 years ago that requires all candidates to have been in the ASB class for at least one semester during their high school careers. “This includes students who were in ASB their freshman or sophomore year and not since, but they sometimes feel that they haven’t been dedicated enough to the class to run for president,” said ASB advisor Susanne Sayles. There are many students at Mac High who are eligible to run for president or VP but don’t realize that they could run or they feel that by not continuing with the class they aren’t qualified for the position.

There has been a trend that the only students who run for executive board positions are students who are currently in the class when they run at the end of either their sophomore or junior year, which excludes students who might make great school leaders but for some reason are no longer in the class. These students could feel guilty re-entering the class after leaving it, and they don’t want to run for president even if they would do a great job at it.

While many feel that the one-semester rule limits the range of students that could bring fresh ideas to the presidency, it does help prepare the potential candidates for the responsibilities that come with the job. There are many details to the position that can only be learned by being in the class and observing how it functions with the leadership of the president and VP. “There are lots of responsibilities outside of school,” said Sayles, “the class experience really prepares them for those.”

The main responsibilities of the president include running all business meetings for ASB, proposing ideas to the school administration, and representing MHS at all school board meetings. The president must be someone who is passionate about the school and has

ideas for ways to improve the school and its relationship with the community. Of course, there are some limits to the president’s power; for some issues, like the finals schedule, there are legal or administrative barriers that prevent the president from doing everything that they would like to accomplish. Many of the responsibilities revolve around leading the leadership class and organizing events through the class.

This year, there will only be one set of candidates- Maria Martinez as president and Ben Stuart as VP, making this the second time in only three years that a pair of candidates have run unopposed and there won’t be an election. Even though there won’t be a voting process, Martinez and Stuart will still give speeches to the student body at the class meetings on April 27, giving students an idea of what they plan to do with their power next year. A change this year in the voting process is that students will cast their votes through Google Forms during their social studies class. According to Sayles, this will create a larger voter turnout and reinforce what students are learning in their classes about the voting process.

It’s great to have mores students participate in electing a student government, but they still won’t have any say in who are their president and VP, at least for this coming year. In order to encourage more students to run for these positions in the future, Sayles and the ASB class are working on advertising the vision of the leadership program and what it actually does. They are also attempting to advertise the position to students who are no longer in the leadership program but are completely qualified.

Another way in which Sayles and ASB are trying to attract more potential candidates is by changing the perception that the school has of the leadership class. “There may be some stigma around ASB being an elite group that is unapproachable by other students,” said Sayles. “We’re working to align with the pulse of the school.” Hopefully their efforts will lead to an increased number of students interested in becoming the school president, which would allow the student body to have more of a voice in how the school is led.

PREPARING FOR LIFE

MHS STUDENTS LEND A HAND IN THE LIFE SKILLS PROGRAM

Here at MHS, Room 8 is home to the students of the Life Skills class. Though the students in this class have disabilities, they are still able to learn new skills and work in a classroom environment. There are, however, several different students who take a class called Peer Tutoring. In this class, students without disabilities come into the Lifeskills classroom and assist the disabled students with their classwork and jobs.

“They bring new ideas and perspectives into our classroom,” said Charlotte Smail, the Lifeskills teacher.

According to Smail, the peer tutors have had a positive impact on the students in her class. She has found that her students often respond better to the Peer Tutors than they do to the teachers in the classroom.

The duties of a Peer Tutor include helping disabled students with academics, assisting them in their jobs

(washing tables and doing laundry for the school), working with them on projects, and going out with the students to places in the community like the grocery store and the bank.

Many new Peer Tutors have joined the class this year.

Victoria Martin, sophomore, joined because she wanted to try something new. After seeing a presentation about the class her freshman year, Tori decided that Peer Tutoring would be the perfect opportunity. Alyssa Ayala, senior, signed up for the class because she thought it would be fun.

“I wanted to be around a new group of people and get to know the kids in the class better,” Ayala said.

Both of the Peer Tutors interviewed found their experience in the class to be a positive one. Ayala’s favorite part about being a Peer Tutor is helping the students with their

school work.

“They’re actually very smart,” she said. “They know some things that we don’t know.”

Martin also likes working on school work with the students and likes to help them learn new things.

“It’s really cool to watch them make progress,” Martin said.

According to Smail, there are a lot of benefits that come from being a Peer Tutor. They learn leadership skills and strategies of how to deal with all different groups of people.

“Our Peer Tutors learn to how to work on a team,” Smail said. “They learn how to help others without judging.”

At the junior class meetings during this year’s Unity Week, there was a story shared that stood out the most. It was the story of Rehema and Wani Mushombe, two sisters who moved to the United States from Rwanda when they were 13 and 14.

According to Rehema, after her father spoke with people from Europe, the family decided the US would be the best place to move because they wanted a safe place to live.

“We wanted peace,” said Wani.

The transition to American culture has not been particularly easy for the two sisters. Communication has been one of the hardest factors in the move.

“We’re doing ok now, but when we came here, we didn’t speak any English,” said Wani. “It’s the communication that holds us back.”

The language barrier hasn’t been the only difficulty the sisters have faced. Both Rehema and Wani miss their friends and family back home.

I also really miss the food and clothing from my home,” said Rehema.

The United States is a lot different from Rwanda, and both of the girls experience a bit of culture shock.

According to Wani, school here is very different from her old school and her daily life has changed a lot.

“Everything is different here,” said Rehema.

Both Rehema and Wani plan on going to college after they graduate high school. While Wani isn’t sure of her dream job yet, Rehema knows she wants to go to school to be an engineer.

I don’t know what I want to be yet,” said Wani. “But I want to be somebody.”

Even if you know nothing about makeup you can still join because they also go over different “techniques and ideas that one would learn in beauty school or other trade schools”. For those who want to do more than just learn makeup skills there is still more. “It’s not all recreational, it’s also the business side,” said Cornelison. He continues on by sharing some of their lessons. “It’s all about learning to be sanitary, careful, and working for the client.”

Many kids have dreams of playing college, or professional sports. For seniors Sam Swenson and Kade Mechals that dream became a reality this spring for baseball. Both boys will be attempting to carry their momentum into their college careers. “It’s honestly a dream come true,” said Mechals.

“I’m so grateful for this opportunity and I’m thankful to everybody who’s helped me get this far,” said Swenson.

After a mid-season injury last year Kade Mechals wasn’t sure how he would play. However, after signing with the Western Oregon University Wolves Kade is thirsty for more. Both as a pitcher and an infielder Mechals will be getting a lot of time for the Wolves. “I’ve been blessed with this opportunity. So I’ve gotta keep putting in work as a Grizzly, and later as a wolf.”

SKYLAR PEAK AND KIERA BLANKENSHIP RUN WITH THEIR BROOMS. Local Harry Potter fans and sports enthusiasts alike are bounding in excitement as Mac High welcomes the Quidditch Club to its roster of extracurricular opportunities this year.

Yes, that is right; and though modern technology has yet to develop flying brooms, Muggle Quidditch is no less fun. Last year, NHS hosted a Quidditch match which inspired club President Skylar Peak to start the MAC High Club. After having so much fun in that match, and some time put forth in his independent projects class, the club became a possibility and is actively seeking new members. Quidditch teams consist of seven players, six of which are on the pitch (or field) while the remaining member hunts the snitch. Within a team, there are three beaters who prevent opposing team members by knocking them out and forcing them back to their goal with bludgers , a single keeper who acts as a goalie and prevents

scoring, and chasers who are the scorers by throwing quaffles.

The seeker, is a member who chases the snitch (who may leave the pitch and run anywhere they choose). The game ends when the snitch is caught and the team with the most points (plus the 30 scored by the team who caught the snitch) wins the match. Current Quidditch Club member Kiera Blankenship said that “when [she] heard the high school was going to have a Quidditch team, [she] got really excited.”

But the club isn’t just for Harry Potter fans; “anyone with an imagination” can enjoy it. Meetings are Tuesdays and Thursdays after school and all are encouraged to join.

COOPER RICH WAITS FOR A RETURN VOLLEY IN EARLY SEASON PRACTICE. RICH HAS RISEN TO THE NUMBER ONE POSITION ON THE TENNIS TEAM. For as long as he can remember Cooper Rich has loved the sport of tennis.

Growing up two houses down from the Cowls street tennis courts has allowed Cooper to practice his sport more frequently than most others. Cooper said, “Tennis is so great because it can be competitive, but it’s also easy to pick up and play with friends.

I play every weekend for fun, even during the season, it’s just always fun.” Cooper’s love of the game has impacted not only himself but also the players around him.

Cooper’s doubles partner Nick Denley said, “Coop’s attitude and demeanor have definitely helped me fall in love with the game. He is a role-model for younger players and an incredible competitor for his peers.”

Cooper also cites his family as a huge influence on his tennis career. “Growing up with an aunt and uncle who both coached tennis has always been a big part of my identity as a tennis player. Plus both of my parents love to play, and hit with me whenever they get the chance.” All of the work and time Cooper has put in have linked to his selection as co-captain

of the varsity team alongside Drew Altringer. This is an honor which is rarely bestowed upon sophomores but Cooper has taken it in stride. “Being selected as a captain was a tremendous honor, especially with the great group of guys we’ve got this season”, said Rich.

Cooper’s results this season as a player have already showcased his ability. With a 5-1 record in his matches Cooper is already dominating the conference and leading the grizzlies.

Cooper is also notorious for keeping his cool in tense situations and finding the positive in tough situations. In the Grizzlies only loss this season Cooper kept his cool and helped turn it into a learning experience to help everybody improve.

Kevin Chang said, “The goal of a great captain is to help the team become better, and to constantly improve. Both Cooper and Drew make sure that every single practice, and every single match we improve.”

Cooper is leading the grizzlies in a pivotal point of growth for the next two years. Both as a player and as a person Cooper is somebody who lives every day in the best way he can.

ODIN THORSON MAKES A TACKLE AGAINST A PLAYER FROM BEAVERTON. Rugby is a pretty big deal for some students here at McMinnville High School, although it isn’t a registered sport here. The local team that most of the players play for is the West Valley Rams, led by our very own Mac Keizer and Kolby Nall.

“I WISH THERE WAS A TEAM FOR THE SCHOOL, BECAUSE I LIKE HOW MUCH INTENSITY THE SPORT HAS BUT I ALSO LIKE HOW CLEAN THE GAME ITSELF IS.” -ODIN THORSON Odin Thorson, a sophomore here at Mac High said, “I wish there was a team for the school, because I like how much intensity the sport has but I also like how clean the game it’s self is. The team also thinks that there should be teams and leagues here at the school.

The team has had two games and out of those two they have won 1 and lost 1. Another player that is on the also goes here at McMinnville High School, Jesus Mendoza also a sophomore said, “it is a very respected team we all get along very well.” Not everyone likes getting hurt in rugby, but these students at Mac High really want McMinnville to make this a school sport.

By far one of the most loved shows in comedy history ibeen Friends. This 90’s show graced us with its presence back and the day and now it’s here again. Many fanatics have binge watched this show since it became available on Netflix and others still enjoy it.

GREY’S ANATOMY

While changing scenes from the emergency room to normal hospital rooms, Grey’s Anatomy has captured the many hearts of viewers. Watching relationships is a big part of this series and the main reason why some continue to watch. 12 seasons may also help you obtain some knowledge about medical terms.

PARKS AND RECREATION

The year in which we entered the park was April 9, 2009. From then on we met the members of the cast who then proceeded to build love in our hearts.

Throughout the entire series Leslie Knope (played by Amy Poehler) had one goal and one goal only, to build a park. Even though she never builds one, we still follow her throughout life and experience all the funny events that she is a part of.

Film is a visual medium; so first and foremost, I’m interested in motion pictures that can tell a story cinematically. I’m thinking of movies like Once Upon a Time in the West, 8 ½, 2001: A Space Odyssey, or even recent films like The Revenant. These are movies that don’t depend on dialogue or exposition to move it along. The filmmakers trust us as an audience to keep up. One of the problems with many filmmakers today is they think very little of audiences. That’s why Michael Bay gets to keep making movies.

I do love dialogue in films when it’s done right. Movies as diverse as Sweet Smell of Success, Goodfellas, The Big Lebowski, and Annie Hall are terrific in part because of the astonishing dialogue between the characters. I like when characters are allowed to speak because they’re angry or happy or sad, and not just talking about the mechanics of the plot. Think of your favorite movie lines; very few of them have anything to do with the story.

I’m drawn to films that focus on the characters more than the plot. Movies like Taxi Driver, Mean Girls, Big, Jaws, Clockwork Orange, Le Boucher and Inside Llewyn Davis work because we’re interested in the characters. We may not agree with them or even like them, but these characters are compel-

ling regardless.

As a film nerd, when I’m watching a film I’m constantly thinking about the composition of each shot, or in other words, how the filmmaker has decided to frame each moment of the film. Unless it’s a movie directed by Michael Bay or Zack Snyder, there is usually a reason why the director has framed a shot a certain way. Think of recent movies like The Force Awakens or Mad Max: Fury Road and you’ll see filmmakers totally in command of visually telling a story, in large part thanks to their brilliant use of composition.

I’m in constant awe of the overwhelming experiences of film. Seeing Raiders of the Lost Ark, Vertigo, Rules of the Game, and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly on the big ADAM GRAY screen are, for me, the equivalent of going to the Grand Canyon for the first time. Films have the power to make you laugh, cry, scream, ponder and wonder. Films can transport you to another time, another place. They are unlike any other form of art. They are magic.

AMERICAN HORROR STORY

Being scared and solving mysteries is what people like to do when watching this show. American Horror Story has gained a huge following since season one, ‘Murder House’. Multiple actors like Evan peters have really acquired a good reputation from being on this show.

In this show we also see appearances of other wellknown celebrities like Adam Levine and Lady Gaga.

THE OFFICE

The Office is a show that has blessed us with comedic genius over the years. From March 24, 2005 to May 15, 2013 this show has been available to be experienced.

It follows office workers and all their adventures that we find funny and entertaining.

When: April 15-17, April 22-24 Where: Indio, California This is a very well known and fun festival experience that you will not want to miss out on. It’s a good way to make you feel the summer atmosphere.

Every year the crowds get bigger and the music gets better- this year is featuring famous artists such as Guns N’ Roses, Halsey, and Major Lazer.

Sadly, tickets are sold out, but if you really want to go, find a way to get tickets!

BEALE STREET

When: April 29 - May 1st Where: Memphis, Tennessee Year to year this festival brings the most people from all around the world to come this electric and top-notch party festival. Some many different varieties of musical artist that come and perform such as Ed Sheeran, Paramore, and Pixies. People with all different kinds of music tastes will love the music at this festival.

SASQUATCH!

When: May 27- 30 Where: George, Washington The main stage excites everyone and the festival made endless amounts of musical moments. Chance The Rapper made a return on this stage in 2014. This year the musicians that most people will enjoy are Lana Del Rey, Kendrick Lamar, and Chromeo.

ELECTRIC DAISY CARNIVAL

When and where: Mexico City, Feb 27 - 28; Las Vegas, June 17 - 19; UK, July 9; Tokyo, July 2016 This continuously traveling festival is the biggest festivals and music concerts ever. There is insane party in Las Vegas that went international in 2015. With non-stop music and performances from morning to night, make sure to stay deeply hydrated because it’s not gonna be fun if you’re thirsty the whole time.

WARPED TOUR

When: June 24 - August 13 Where: Throughout North America This is perhaps the the only tour that travels throughout the whole North America. Plus it goes through the top 40 cities and is never too far from home. With a pop - punk rock and rap type of music taste, by 2014 its was the 20th year of the Warped Tour that is full on action packed that you must go to.

A new sport was added at Mac High this year which involves both dance and expertly throwing flags high in the air. Winter guard is a synchronized color guard (flag spinning) sport based off military ceremonies.

Unlike a military ceremony, winter guard is typically indoors and performed with recorded music instead of a live percussion. Winter guard made its debut with great success, placing 3rd in the Regional A Class at the end of the winter season.

Alicia Barton is a senior and a veteran in the world of winter guard, “I’ve been doing it for five years, but only year at the high school.” When asked about the competitions she said, “It was less of a competition and more of a performance.”

Fellow performer, junior Sung Lee, joined the team at the beginning of the season and loved it, “Everyone depends on each other and it’s a team effort.” All the winter guard teams are very close and all the teams are supportive of each other. When asked about the competitions Lee said, “I like it because it’s not competitive [because] all the teams are friends.”

Winter guard doesn’t just do competitions. They performed in front of the whole school in the winter recognition assembly with an Alice in Wonderland themed routine.

This year winter guard was only a winter sport, but next year an elective class will be offered for anyone wanting to be a part of the group without having to stay after school. Take Barton’s word for it, “It’s REALLY fun.”
