After two months of students wondering about the mysterious disappearance of interim principal Sean Burke, the true reason behind his absence has been made public. Burke left the high school administration during Winter Break, and the students were told that it was due to “minor medical reasons,” but public police records show that during that time Burke was actually under police investigation.

Recently a woman whose name has not yet been released made allegations that Burke had had sexual contact with her during her sophomore year at Mac High, 20 years ago.

While Burke denied all sexual aspects of the relationship, the woman alleged that the two had sexual contact multiple times over the course of a few months when she was 16 and he was a new teacher in his late 20s. She disclosed this information to police in late fall, prompting a full investigation by the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission and local police.

According to the News Register, in police reports the woman said that she had had a troubled childhood and adolescence, and connected with Burke, who she saw as a resource and someone with whom she could discuss her family problems.

If the woman had come forward and disclosed this information immediately after the alleged incident, Burke could have been charged with many charges includ-

ing sexual abuse in the second and third degrees because the alleged victim was underage, so any sexual contact would legally be considered statutory rape.

The woman did not, however, report the incidents to police during the late 90s when they allegedly occurred because she felt at fault for the relationship. She finally decided to bring it to the police’s attention now in order to protect her own young children from similar incidents.

Because of these allegations that arose without warning 20 years after the alleged incidents, Burke was forced to resign as principal in order to not bring attention to what allegedly happened two decades ago.

Due to the time that has elapsed, all criminal charges for Burke have been dropped because the statute of limitations has run out, so the McMinnville police have stopped the investigation and there is no longer a possibility of Burke being charged with any more criminal charges. In the future, however, the woman may choose to start a civil litigation, which would seek monetary payment instead of potential time in prison.

The investigation is still being carried out by the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission, and the final legal status of the investigation is yet to be official.

Every spring MHS students look forward to the biggest pageant of the year: Mr. Mac High. While watching the guys get up on stage and dance around is a good time, students often forget the reason the pageant is put on, which is to raise money for Doernbecher. Each year the pageant raises thousands of dollars for the children’s hospital in Portland.

Doernbecher is the children’s hospital at OHSU (Oregon Science and Health University). According to OHSU’s website, Doernbecher offers pediatric care and treatment of cardiology, cardiac surgery, cancer, neurosurgery, and neonatal care.

Doernbecher is a hospital that is designed specifically with kids in mind, so the hospital is filled with playgrounds and playrooms.

On Feb.19, the Mr. Mac High guys took a trip to Doernbecher to see first-hand what the money they raise will be going to. They toured the hospital and got to see what life was like for the patients who are currently staying there.

“It was really cool to see the direct impact that the guys are making,” said Maddy Gibson, 10, assistant director of the pageant.

The guys found it very moving to see exactly what they were helping. For Adrian Morales, a senior who also goes by Mr. Psycho astrology for the pageant, the

most memorable part of the hospital was the meditation room. It’s a place for parents and young patients to go and pray or meditate during tough times while they stay at Doernbecher.

For one of the Mr. Mac High guys visiting the hospital really hits home. Michael Ordaz, senior, whose pageant name is Mr. Salsa Club, has younger sister who has an illness and is treated at Doernbecher.

“It was really sad to see the kids there by themselves, so I joined Mr. Mac High to help out and make a difference there,” he said.

According to the guys, people should support Mr. Mac High because all the money goes to such a good cause. Ordaz stated that the hospital really is for anybody who needs help.

“The pageant isn’t for profit,” said Morales. “It’s just for the kids.”

Overall, Mr. Mac High is a fun event, put on by teenagers to help kids in need.

Even though the show is fun to go and watch, it’s important to remember the cause that the event supports. The guys of the pageant have worked hard on raising money and preparing their acts, so the show is projected to be a huge success this spring in all aspects. When asked what the best part about being in the pageant is, Morales smiled and said: “Everything.”

TEEN TOBACCO USE AGGRESSIVE MARKETING TOWARDS CHILDREN CREATES AN INCREASE IN TEEN SMOKERS

Twenty kids in Oregon take up smoking every single day. While anti-smoking campaigns dramatically decreased the prevalence of youth tobacco use nationwide during the 90s and early 2000s, their effectiveness seems to be wearing off, at least in Oregon. As of 2012, the percentage of underage smokers in Oregon is twice as high as the nationwide average: 9.9% of Oregonian kids and teenagers smoke regularly compared to only 5.6 percent nationally.

What has caused this increase? The amount that children are exposed to advertisements for tobacco products has increased significantly, causing them to be more inclined to purchase these products or have an older friend or relative purchase them on their behalf. According the Oregon Health Authority, more than three-quarters of eighth and eleventh graders said that they had seen a tobacco advertisement within the past month. Tobacco companies take advantage of the vulnerability of this age group, as demonstrated by a public service announcement run by The Real Cost showing young children’s excited reactions to tobacco products in colorful, shiny packaging. However, despite organizations like The Real Cost that work to lower underage smoking, for every dollar these groups spend to prevent youth tobacco use, the tobacco companies spend $14 on marketing.

Children and teens in every state are affected by marketing strategies, yet Oregon has the highest prevalence of youth tobacco use in the nation. The reason for this is

After a 33 year career in education, Kris Olsen has decided to retire after being principal for 13 years at McMinnville High School.

During retirement he said he will be around the sun as much as he can. He and his wife will be where ever it is 75 degrees outside. His wife, however, will not retire until three years after him. He said until then he will be trying to work as much as he can.

After she is done working, he thinks she will want to take off in the motorhome for a full year to have a little vacation of their own so they can enjoy their retirement and go where ever the sun is.

Some of his favorite memories are from the assemblies. He loves how excited the kids get and he likes the new ideas for every event that happens.

When asked what his favorite thing to do at the high school is, he said, “Stand by my garbage can at lunch and watch the kids.”

He has shown us what a great principal he is by winning Oregon High School Principal of the Year for the 2014-2015 school year. He is, however, choosing to retire because he thinks it’s a good time for a new principal to come in and start their career.

He believes the new principal will do well and do fine with the kids.

mostly economic. In 2003, Oregon dropped the tax on cigarettes by 10 cents, making it the only state to lower its tobacco tax in the past 15 years. Because of this, tobacco is slightly cheaper in Oregon than other states, making it easier for underage youth to afford it. Because the majority of youth and adult smokers are from families with lower annual incomes; 1 in 3 Oregon smokers makes less than $15,000 per year. Because of the decreased price, children from lower-income families have much more access to cigarettes and other tobacco products.

In Oregon, almost 1 in 5 students smoke by the end of their senior year of high school. Youth tobacco use has become an epidemic, and it’s time to stop the aggressive marketing by tobacco companies and increase the tax on tobacco products.

During Unity Week, many brave MHS students discussed their pasts and parts of them that the majority of students didn’t know about. This class meeting-style assembly allowed students to emotionally learn about their fellow classmates and was a truly touching way to unify the student body. The students who shared were incredibly courageous and this event was highly appreciated by many students and staff members.

WRESTLERS SUCCEED AT STATE

Every October we gather in the gym and anxiously await the announcement of who will be crowned the princes, princesses, king and queen of Homecoming, even though we already know that it will only be the most popular students at Mac High.

While this is a moment of joy for 38 Mac High students, it’s only a disappointment for 1,962 of us.

Other than for the sake of tradition, is there really a point in doing this? Homecoming has been a US tradition for 150 years, so high schoolers can see one advantage to having another way to recognize the most outgoing, socially worshipped students, but is there really any benefit to adding to this select group’s self-esteem while lowering that of countless other students?

This year, the school attempted to improve this practice by choosing the Winter Formal court by teacher recommendation instead of crowning the runners-up to the Homecoming throne. This is definitely a step up for a school whose recognition assemblies focus on the star athletes (who happen to be the exact same students recognized for Homecoming court) instead of those who are star students. This new system, however, means that it is possible for students to be on both Homecoming and Winter Formal court, further lessening the number of students recognized by the school.

At the canned food drive kick-off assembly, I noticed something strange, but actually not that unexpected at all. Nine of the teacher-chosen members of court are teachers’ kids. Obviously, the staff members are going to choose their own children and the children of their coworkers. ASB needs to find a fair way to choose the members of court if we’re going to have one.

As prom rapidly approaches, we need to remember that the same is true for HANNAH SIEPMANN prom court. While the award provides a moment of happiness for the chosen two students, there is no purpose in dividing the school in order to make a miniscule percentage of the student population happy for one evening.

Even when students themselves get to vote for the court, the whole process creates division and an obvious social gap, something that shouldn’t be allowed to happen.

School is for learning, and while it’s important for the student body to participate in fun activities alongside schoolwork, MHS and other schools nationwide should not be encouraging popularity contests like courts.

Mac High’s wrestlers rocked this year. In the spotlight was junior Brian Barnes, who won his second state title in the 220 lb weight class, making him the second wrestler in MHS history to win two state titles.

Also impressive were sophomore Michael Abeyta, who won second in the 132 lb class, senior Alvaro Flores, who won second in the 120 lb class and senior Bobby Crowston was third at 145lb. Bravo!

GOLF AND TENNIS BECOME CUT SPORTS?

Because so many more students are trying out this year, golf and tennis, which are usually no-cut sports, are having to potential cut athletes in order to guarantee playing time and coaching. So far, 28 boys have signed up to play golf, but only 10 get to play between varsity and JV. No one wants to cut athletes, but there is no more room on the golf course or tennis courts to put players. Players can’t get time on the course or courts. Twenty eight boy golfers is too many.

AWARDS FOR EVERYONE? While it was a nice gesture for ASB to recognize outstanding students and athletes, there were way too many names called at the winter recognition assembly.

We are often called the “generation where everybody gets a ribbon,” and while it’s important to reward students, 50 names is too many to announce individually at an assembly.

SMARTER BALANCED FOR JUNIORS In these few weeks before spring break, the junior class is being bombarded by the Smarter Balanced exam, which is taking the place of OAKS as the standarized test required for graduation. This is stressful for many students, and it has very high stakes! Good luck to all juniors!

Lately some people have been harsh or uncomfortable with public breastfeeding. Do mothers really need to be ashamed about breastfeeding their children? Some people believe that breastfeeding is something natural that women have the ability to do and they shouldn’t be shamed or humiliated for it. They also believe that no one should tell women to go feed their baby somewhere else. On the other hand, there are people that think it is necessary to tell mothers who are breastfeeding that what they are doing is disgusting and they shouldn’t do it in public or at least cover up. Some just do not want breasts to be exposed because people often think of breastfeeding in a sexual way.

My personal belief about breastfeeding is that women should be able to feed their baby whenever and wherever without having to be humiliated by people that are ignorant and immature. I don’t think it is fair that some women can walk in public showing cleavage and expose their body in media, magazines, basically anywhere and no one makes as much of a big deal about it as they do with breastfeeding. I think people should put themselves in mother’s shoes and see how

One thing on the mind of almost everybody in this world is the environment. Because the environment is on a rapid decline many people are looking for some hope of quelling the damage. One such idea is that of a carbon tax, or a tax on fossil fuel emissions. The hope with the tax is to remove the incentive of buying carbon based products. But the question is will it work?

Do the benefits of a carbon tax outweigh the harms? Luckily the answer is yes, a carbon tax would be an extremely beneficial thing for the US right JOE GULLO now.

The main reason why a carbon tax is important is because it does something to combat a problem that is not being solved. There is no way to solve our environmental problems but a carbon tax is one way which can slow it and bring in tax revenue. There is one combatant to a carbon tax and that is a cap-and-trade system. They have the same goal of carbon reduction but a carbon tax targets oil companies 6

who pull oil out of the ground, while a cap-andtrade targets businesses carbon usages. For the purpose of this article I am going to say that either system would be massively beneficial to the world.

Aside from the massive environmental impacts, a carbon tax could do a lot to help the economy. For example, the EPA offers that “a $15 per ton CO2 tax would bring in $80 billion of revenue, which equates to around $250 per U.S. resident, or $1000 for a family of four.” One argument many people have against the carbon tax is that it regressively harms low-income families. However many people have kicked around the idea of direct subsidies to combat the massive problem of inequality in the US. Overall, a carbon tax is something that must be done in order to combat the awful state of the environment right now. We can save the environment and also bring in enormous amounts of money which can go back to citizens and help with funds. I feel that without a carbon tax we give ourselves zero chance of prolonging our existence on this earth.

Overall, people should understand that breastfeeding is something natural that a mother has the right to do and they should be able to breastfeed without having to be concerned if someone is going to be offended. Mothers should feed their child freely without having people pressuring them to finish feeding their child or questioning them whether if it is really necessary to feed their child at a certain time, moment, or place and just let it be.

This past weekend, I, like millions of other people around the world, spent my night glued to the TV while watching the 88th Annual Academy Awards. It is arguably the most important awards show in the film industry, and this year’s show was surrounded by extra controversy.

When the nominations were announced on Jan. 14, they sparked a social media controversy criticizing the Academy’s choice to nominate only white actors for the second year in a row. Much like most of the internet, I was horrified by the omission of some extremely talented actors like Will Smith and Idris Elba. As someone who firmly believes in equality and representation for all, it was shocking to discover that an organization as prestigious as the Academy had introduced a panel of nominees that lacked diversity.

This year’s host, Chris Rock, left the audience rightfully uncomfortable and awed by his hilarious and observant opening monologue. He asked the one question many of us were thinking: “Is Hollywood racist?”

Rock clearly stated his belief that it is so, and I have to agree with him. He brought up an interesting point that while we have left behind that old, in his words, “cross-burning” or “fetch me some lemonade” type of racism. Now, there is a different kind of racism, one that overlooks the ability of people of color and denies them opportunities.

Why, in a world that is seemingly so progressive and so accepting, are we still imposing this awful racism on others? It’s because of the mindset that is passed down from generation to generation. This whole controversy is so much bigger than the Oscars itself. It’s about the fact we think we have improved our mindset so much from that of our ancestors that we don’t notice that we really haven’t changed our thinking at all.

Talented Black, Hispanic, Asian, or actors of any other minority are overlooked because white people who are in power still maintain the beliefs that they are superior, simply because that’s how they were taught.

are white. Whites, however, only make up 63 percent of the American population as a whole. In order for the Academy to create a fair voting process they need to have a board that reflects the diversity of the American population. It is time for the Academy to broaden the diversity of their voters. People of color will not get the proper recognition they deserve if the Academy continues to let a panel with an all-white perspective pick the nominees.

Now some may say that that it is just a coincidence that this year’s nominees were all white. I’m not saying that the actors nominated didn’t deserve their nominations, as they were all talented individuals. I’m just saying that there were many people of color who were overlooked during this year’s awards season. In our society where, according to the 2014 United States Census, only 63 precent of the population is white, having equal representation would mean that only 63 percent of the nominees would be white.

The Academy shouldn’t necessarily be choosing actors based off their skin color, but in the future they need to look and the bigger picture, and realize that the nominations should include people of many different races and backgrounds.

I may only be a white, 15-year-old high school girl, living in the Oregon suburbs. I will never come close to understanding the trauma and hardships that people of color must endure for their entire lives. I do, however, know this: racism does happen every day. I can see it, whether it is in the hallway or on a nationally televised awards show.

It is no longer acceptable for racism to be present in our society, and yet right now, Hollywood is still racist.

It is, however, taking steps in the right direction, with actors like Chris Rock coming forward to speak about this issue. Next year the Academy needs to make a more diverse panel of nominees that creates an accurate representation of people of color in the film industry, or else we, as a society will not have really made any progress towards ending racism at all.

During this year’s Unity Week, a few students were courageous in sharing their stories of struggling with their peers in class meetings. These testimonies remind us that in times of trouble it is easy to feel alone and as if there is no one who can help you. One of the most prominent issues young people, specifically women, face is sexual abuse; however, many victims are often unaware of the resources that are available to them.

Unfortunately, we live in a time where one in five girls has experienced childhood sexual abuse (National Center for Victims of Crime, 2012). This is number is insanely high, and yet many girls are still afraid to seek help when they become victims of abuse. For victims of sexual abuse telling a trusted adult is the first action one should take. Talking to someone they are close to, however, may not be the easiest thing to do.

One fantastic resource is the National Sexual Assault Hotline. When someone calls the hotline, it routes them to local sexual assault service in their area. The hotline is completely confidential, so it is perfect for victims who are afraid to speak to people they know personally. The hotline allows survivors to talk through

what happens and provides them with information about what the next steps in the healing process should be: legally, medically, and emotionally. For more information, visit rainn.org, which is the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network.

Another resource that is often overlooked is school counselors. Many students often only look to their counselors for scheduling, college, and career advice, but forget that they are here to help students through any issues that they may face. Anything that someone tells a counselor will be kept confidential, unless it is something that could be a danger to them. Don’t be afraid to use counselors, they are here to help.

If you are a victim of sexual abuse, or any kind of abuse, do not be afraid to seek help. There are people, whether you know them personally or not, who want to help you. Abuse is not something you should have to go through alone, and you certainly don’t have to.

MAC STUDENTS STRUT THEIR STUFF IN A CLUB JUST FOR ACTING

Many people in the world want to develop a career in the acting industry, and they start to prepare themselves for this dream at multiple stages of their lives. Some might realize this later on in life or some might figure it out pretty early on.

McMinnville High School understands that originality is important for students. The students that want to be actors and actresses do a lot. The have the chance to enter the performing arts which includes many acting classes.

The more serious and more passionate acting students usually decide to join the Thespian Society, a new club at MHS. Sophomore Katie Kenning has been enjoying her time in the club. Even though she only joined last month, she has already made multiple friends and says that “it is a place where you can create a piece that you are happy to compete with.”

just try,” said Colin Salewski about being a freshman in the club. He said that any student can join, regardless of age or experience.

Being in Thespian club does not mean you only joke around and have fun because the main purpose is preparing for competition.

Kenning explained that in competitions each group comes up with a different routine or scene. “They then practice and practice until they get it right for the district competitions.”

She continues by saying that you then get divided into different categories depending on the type of performance. “You perform three times for different judges, you get judged, and then they all add up your scores.”

Thespians are the actors and actresses at our school that are dedicated to their craft. Someday they may continue on in the business and make their way to Broadway or Hollywood.

While OHSET, Mac High’s equestrian team is not as recognized as some of the other sports at Mac High, the riders work just as hard as any other group of athletes. OHSET stands for Oregon High School Equestrian Teams. In this sport, team members show off their horses in a variety of events including showmanship, trail, and gaming. Members from MHS include Talon Binks, 12, Mahima White, 11, Summer Preston, 11, Abbigale Johnston, 12, Kate Noble, 11, Paige Schwarz, 10, Christopher Trapp, 9, and Hannah Ewing, 10.

Many of the members ride multiple horses and compete in many events at meets.

The members meet twice a week for two hours to practice for these events. The time that gets put into taking care of each animal is extensive, but if you ask any of the members it is well worth the time and effort. Senior Talon Binks said “my favorite part of being a member of OHSET is that it’s my second family and I enjoy the food and the intense adrenaline rush I get when I game, but I also like the collected poise of English.”

Most practices start with practicing performace events, like showmanship and western horsemanship. After that, the riders work on their gaming, where they practice riding around barrels and poles.

“We’ve only had one meet this season, but it was a ton of fun,” said junior Kate Noble. “Caitie Stoller and I placed second in working pairs and the other girls and boy did great as well.” The team has another meet this weekend, where they will try to perform even better. Good luck to the OHSET team this year!

Whether it be baseball, softball, track, tennis, or golf look for some stellar seasons to come from these sports.

As far as everybody is concerned the Grizzlies look to replicate their spring successes from last season or in some cases rebuild after losses of varsity players.

One of these sports is girl’s tennis; varsity senior Shay Bristow said, “This season might be tough considering we only have five returning varsity players. We have, however, a great group and I know that this season will allow for us to improve as a team.”

Boys tennis captain Drew Altringer is very excited for this season, “I know that this season is going to be really fun, and we have a lot of young players that will have to step up.

Overall, I think we will have a great team, and a great season.”

Baseball is coming off of a great season last year and hopes to replicate past success.

Varsity senior Jesse Earhart said, “We have a lot to live up to, but we have a great group of guys and I know this will be another fun season of Grizzlies baseball.”

Softballs lost a lot of seniors and are hoping they can recover. The team will have to rely on youth more than ever. Junior Nichole Teasdale said, “This season is going to be great, because

I know that as a team we are all close and are really excited for the future.”

The most populous sport in the school (track) is always looking for improvement and this season is no exception. Boys’ varsity runner Brevin Geelan said, “The upcoming season is going to be strong we have fast girls returning on varsity, and the guys have a lot of runners as well. Plus, we have great throwers and some above average jumpers. Overall, I believe that both the boys and girls will have a great season.”

Last but not least golf is looking to improve even more than last year. The girls return two state competitors, senior Kaela Worden and junior Emma Beyer.

Worden said, “I’m pretty confident we will do well, I was a little nervous about the size of the team, but it looks like we will have a lot of girls.” Varsity junior Michael Martinoff said that, “I’m sure we will have another stellar season, and even though we lost a few guys we will have a great team.”

Overall, spring sports seem to be headed for greatness. Even though most teams lost a few players everybody is hopeful and optimistic that the Grizzlies will have great teams across the board. Keep an eye out for Grizzlies sports as the season progresses.

MHS VARISTY CHEER WINS SECOND PLACE AT THEIR STATE COMPETITION AFTER A LONG SEASON

The Mac High varsity cheer team has completed a successful season and was able to win second place at the state competition a few weeks ago.

The varsity team has been working hard continuously since the summer, and the cheerleaders finally got to see their hard work pay off at state. “We’ve spent about 8 months perfecting a two and a half minute routine and it’s a big bonding experience,” said varsity cheerleader Haley Schoenthal, “There’s no better feeling than doing what you love with people you

McMinnville High School swimming, for girls and boys varsity, has done extremely well for this season. Many MHS student fans came out to come see the all the boys and girls competing in swimming districts. All boys are girls were very excited about districts. Sydney Stern, 12, had mixed feelings before districts, “I was really excited and really nervous too.”

Many predictions were made about how both boys and girls would do at this year’s districts.

Karl Wolff, 10, said what he thought about girls swimming, “I don’t know if they’re going to make first, but if they try and give 100 percent of their effort they should definitely place at least the top three.”

The Grizzly girls came through, though. Rosie Porter, 11, came in first in the girls 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:00.58. Molli Hartzell, 12, made first in the 50 yard freestyle and set a new district record with a time of 24.91. She also got first place with her 100 yard backstroke with a time of 58.87. In the girls 100 yard breaststroke Jessica Noyes, 12, with a time of 1:14.29, placed in 5th. Senior Yosalin Hernandez, placed 6th at 1:16:06 and junior Hannah Siepmann came in 7th, with a time of 1:18.29. All of the MHS girls in the 100 breaststroke made A finals.

at this year’s districts.

“We have a really great team of boys that all been working really hard, and I think that we’re going to win,” said sophomore Karl Wolff. MHS boys swimming did make a breakthrough with Garrett Sutton, 10, placing second in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 50.10. Giovanni Mariotti, 12 , made first in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 51.65. Mariotti also won in the 200 yard IM, timed at 1:56.23. Other students such as Levi Burres, 10, Hunter Harris, 10, and Pierce Matson, 9, made it into the A-final as well. In the breaststroke Max Hayes, 12, came in second with a time of 1:00.80. In the boys 200 yard freestyle, Hunter Harris, 10, placed in second with a time 1:50.47.

Overall the team placed first for girls in 200 yard freestyle with a final time of 1:42.62 and boys placed second overall in the 200 yard freestyle with a final time of 1:30.77. Grizzly girls also made first in the 400 yard freestyle with a final time 3:45.39 and boys making second with an overall time of 3:20.43 in the 400 yard freestyle.

The boys placed second in state to Jesuit at the OSAA State Meet at Mt. Hood Community College.

The team has been battling injuries and sickness all season, and it has been tough for them because the routine would have to be changed each time for a different number of athletes.

At state, the varsity team managed to take home second place in a very competitive category. They competed against various other 6A schools in Oregon and against other coed teams, but were able to showcase all of their hard work. “During awards, hearing our name called for second place was the most rewarding feeling,” said Schoenthal.

The team is excited about next year for multiple reasons.

The McMinnville Youth Cheer program prepares elementary and middle school girls for competitive high school cheerleading, and many of the girls from the program will be freshmen next year who will add experience to the team despite their age. Also, many boys have been attending the cheer team’s open gyms, which will hopefully expand the boys’ membership of Mac High’s coed team.

This breakfast spot has without a doubt some of the best food in town. For under ten dollars, they’ll serve up a heaping plate of spectacular cheesy vegetables, potatoes, and eggs, with a side of homemade toast. In addition to its far-out menu, Morning Thunder’s main attraction is its incredibly refreshing environment: great service, Grateful Dead and classic cars-themed decor, and peaceful acoustic music. I suggest the Super Nova Veggie Scramble: Tomatoes, green onions, mushrooms, cheddar cheese, and avocado mixed with scrambled eggs. It comes with potatoes, and a slice of toast. It can easily be split between two people for $9.75.

PURA VIDA This Latin-American restaurant is a hit among fans of traditional South and Middle American dishes, though its chefs typically take usually creative spins on common recipes.The interior is comfortable, with avant-garde artwork on every wall. A plus: items on the lunch menu are especially delicious and affordable, with multiple filling options under five dollars.

I suggest the Plátano Maduro: Plantains, beans, sour cream, and paprika for $5.

SUSHI KYO The Twilighters are Mac High’s best and most well-known choir, so getting into the group as a sophomore can be hard to do. This year three sophomores have achieved the title of Twilighter: James Beals, Anna Johnson, and Sophie Mullian While Johnson and Mullian were both recruited to join the Twilighters, every potential member must go through an audition to gain Twilighter status. This year the Twilighters needed a new bass player, so Mr. Libonati recruited Mullian to play bass for the group.

“I did a summer camp the year before freshman year and I took a class from Dana Libonati. He asked why I hadn’t auditioned for choir and that was because I didn’t know about it,” said Johnson. “So halfway through the year I auditioned and got in.”

Getting into the group as a sophomore is something that all three

of them are proud of. According to Beals, the group is very hard to get into, and since it’s very close group it is a big reward to get in. All three consider the group to be family, and to them that is the biggest reward of all.

Surprisingly, singing hasn’t always been a focus for this talented group of individuals. Although Mullian has been playing the bass for a while, Beals and Johnson hadn’t started singing until the past couple of years. Beals started his singing career at the Duniway Middle School choir when he was in sixth grade, while Johnson only started singing about three years ago.

“I haven’t been singing that much, I never thought I could sing,” she said. “I did acting before I did singing, so it’s kind of new for me actually.”

The Twilights don’t just sing, either. They spend a lot of time bonding

and working together. According to Johnson, the class is a very real world class, in which the members get together to talk about real world issues.

“It’s a really nice group of people to work with,” said Mullian.

All three sophomore Twilighters agreed that the best part about being in the group was that they are like a family. Because singing is just a hobby for these three, the people in the choir are what make it great.

According to Johnson, the group has a very good connection and is very much like family to each other.

“The best part about Twilighters is the fact that we’re all just one family,” said Beals. “It’s not that you just get into this small group and can sing great, it’s the fact that you have a family that you can look back on who can support you.”

Sushi Kyo is honestly such a gift. It might not be the sushi McMinnville deserves, but it’s certainly the sushi restaurant it needs. The interior is clean and modern, with a sushi“train” in the middle. Each freshmade roll is under three dollars, making it one of the most affordable options around. I suggest the Salem Roll(specialorder):Tempurafriedsushirollwithcream cheese, crab for $1.75.

LOS MOLCAJETES Los Molcajetes is known for having the freshest homemade ingredients and a great environment.The employees are friendly, and the service is fast. The extensive menu and amazingly prepared dishes make this possibly the best Mexican restaurant in town. I suggest the enchiladas: Two corn tortillas rolled with beef, enchilada sauce, and cheese for $7.95.

LOVE FOR BLACK AND WHITE CLASSIC FILMS ARE STILL RELEVANT IN TODAY’S SOCIETY

Everyone has heard the lines, “Here’s looking at you kid” and “I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship” but not many people actually know what movie they are from (Casablanca). These classic films have become considered obsolete to the modern cinematic experience, which is a shame.

Back in 1942 a movie was considered a work of art and many hours of hard work was put into every scene.

We take for granted the amount of work that is put into making a film, especially in the early 1900’s when the technology was just beginning. There needed to be actors, of course, but there were also the writers, producers, editors, and even the guy that holds the boom mike. Black and white movies might have cheesy special effects, but the characters are timeless.

Recently the author of To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee, passed away. Her book was made into a movie in black and white back in 1962. The movie received three Academy Awards and three Golden Globes. Gregory Peck’s performance as Atticus Finch was amazing, specifically his monologue at Tom Robinson’s trial about equality. It’s astonishing how something made fifty years ago can still be so powerful.

Another classic is about twelve jurors who discuss if a seventeen year old boy is guilty for murdering his father. Twelve Angry Men takes place in literally only two rooms, but it could keep the attention of twenty high school students for an hour and a half. The names of the characters were never even given, but the audience learns so much about each one only by their persona and how the jurors act in the juror’s room. A powerful display about the justice system, Twelve Angry Men brings up relevant questions about how the justice system operates. There are also plenty of hilarious backand-forth’s between the men.

These classic movies are a part of American culture and they are incredibly fun to watch with friends. Who hasn’t watched Dracula on Halloween or It’s a Wonderful Life on Christmas Eve? I challenge you to watch at least one classic movie over spring break, rent one for three dollars or find one on Netflix. It will be worth it.
