SLEEP UNDER THE NORTHERN LIGHTS WITH A NEW NORWEGIAN LUXURY GLASS LODGE Available from December to March, the new Panorama Lodges are designed to sleep two people and open to their first visitors in November 2023. Further spring and summer availability will be added. The clean, contemporary and Scandinavian design of the new panorama lodge uses local natural materials to ground it with the wilderness outside. “Experiencing new travel experiences in luxury shouldn’t be at the cost of the environment,” adds Jonny Cooper from Off the Map Travel.

Solar maximum sees the arrival of a new glass lodge to Norway complete with bespoke king sized Aurora bed.

A new travel experience has launched for the first time in Norway, allowing guests to sleep under the Northern Lights in absolute indulgence at a new luxury glass lodge. The launch coincides with the height of the solar maximum, the time in the sun’s 11 year cycle where it is most active causing the brightest and most frequent displays of the Aurora Borealis. Much like the serene ocean waves, the 63m long Entourage, built by Damen Yachting, offers a sanctuary that whispers tranquility. Neither the anticipated dazzling lights nor the myriad of intricate finishes extend one’s greetings. As time unfolds, one discovers the delicate balance between design and comfort that fills the space. The desire to create luxury through artistic flair and abundant detailing always permeates a designer’s mind. However, BURDIFILEK’s composed design ethos takes on a unique hue. Above the water’s surface, the firm’s design does not contend with the beauty of surrounding nature, but

rather seamlessly guides one’s mind into a world of repose. “We wanted the exterior surrounding to start the visual dialogue with the interior environment, so embracing the language of marine design was the beginning of the narrative in the studio,” explains Diego Burdi, Creative Director and Founding Partner at BURDIFILEK. “The initial impression is rather understated, and creating understated luxury was key during the design process.” Stepping onto the main deck, the interior almost dissolves into a merger of sky and sea. On the

main deck, one is immediately struck by the interplay with nature, with expansive windows that stretch from ceiling to floor create a tableau of grandeur. The meticulously chosen fumedoak wall finishes complete the frame, casting a warm undertone throughout. Restrained curves add a touch of gentleness, complemented by thoughtfully curated furnishings. The customdesigned furniture, with a hint of blush and sand-colored carpets, infuses a tapestry of colors and rich textures to elevate the overall coherence of the contemporary classic masterpiece.

A staircase, visible through the passage, captures one’s gaze with its fluid undulations conjuring an artistic expression in motion. Enveloped by walls upholstered in soft leather, the bold metal core strikes an elegant equilibrium. The large full-height tinted windows on the main and upper decks merge into a great visual and spatial continuum that accentuates the

The main aft deck profile revels in the sublime equilibrium of designer Frank Laupman’s signature arches, which protect the deck and assure guests’ privacy while offering arresting views from the side and stern.

At 52 metres in length, 9 metres in the beam and with a gross tonnage of 499, the yacht spans 5 decks and accommodates up to 10 guests in the comfort of the main-deck owner suite and 4 VIP cabins below. There are also 6 cabins for the 11 crew. CRN M/Y CIAO reflects the character of a knowledgeable owner with a passion for the sea. He was particular about the social zones, requiring roomy, comfortable open-air spaces linked with fluid precision to the large, luminous interiors. The magnificent outdoor areas – like the two sizeable lounges with sunbathing area and pool, one on the sun deck and the other on the main deck, or the ample al fresco dining area on the upper deck – are conceived as multipurpose convivial spaces for enjoying the open-air life to the full in intimate touch with the sea. The interiors reflect an elegant simplicity and crispness of form with sophisticated details in an interplay of natural colour combinations. The architectural design is based on pure, continuous lines running through the spaces, uniting the variety of superior natural materials like marble, leather and solid woods while lending a sense of harmony and continuity. To fulfil the owner’s express request for an informal on-board lifestyle with a welcoming atmosphere, CRN worked with Massari Design to create some extremely comfortable spaces. A key motif in the interior design is the warmth of the woods, offset by a prevailing sense of lightness in a conscious style choice featuring suspended furniture in a floating-design theme. The predominant warm, intense, enveloping tones like gold, sand and orange for the finishes, furnishings and textiles in customised textures promote a cordial mood on every deck. The favoured woods are natural oak and walnut with horizontal grain, selected respectively for the floors and walls throughout. In the bathrooms, the

Bronze Amani marble in mole-grey tones with white and gold veining echoes the warm notes that suffuse the entire vessel. The meticulous lighting design makes the spaces even more attractive and welcoming, as the soft, indirect illumination integrates sensitively with the furnishings to blend with the natural light. As with the owner suite, all the guest areas and cabins come with the very latest smart-automation technology. Thus guests can control and personalise the air conditioning system, the opening and closing of the curtains and blinds, the lighting – from the brightness to switching on and off – and, naturally, all the audiovisual kit. The interiors were created with our in-house carpenters at Zago SpA, the Ferretti Group company set up over a century ago. Zago has grown from a small artisanal woodwork shop into an internationally renowned player on the bespoke naval-furnishing scene and a true champion of Italian excellence.

MAIN DECK The main-deck spaces are fully integrated inside and out in a harmonious flow that bestows a sense of openness and continuity. Further forward, the helm station designed with anti-glare materials affords excellent visibility, offering five display screens and all the latest navigation technology. The furniture in the bow area forward of the wheelhouse is very lightweight and can easily be removed to haul out and take on the two jet skis. There is also a dedicated space at the bow tip to stow a 6.32-metre Williams 625 tender and a 5.20-metre Williams 520 rescue tender. extending right on to the water, where guests can dive straight in or enjoy water sports with the array of toys. The space integrates with an open-air living area featuring a bar that looks on to the wellness area, an oasis of peace with a refreshing and stimulating hammam, a shower experience with chromotherapy and a wellness zone. Down from the main-deck lobby, there are 4 double guest cabins – two twins near the stern and two more towards the bow. The spaces fit in beautifully with the style, colours and materials in the interiors on the various decks. The warmth of wood, leather and lacquerwork combines with strong design features to lend an overall sense of great harmony and elegance. The two stern cabins are separated by panelling that can be removed to create a single fullbeam unit. The spacious, well-organised crew quarters toward the bow are laid out along a central corridor, including a pantry and 5 crew cabins with bright contemporary fittings, finishes and materials. Accommodating the need for an extra cabin took a herculean effort, requiring a continual recalculation of the volumes with considerable precision to exploit the space to best effect for optimum liveability yet without exceeding the 499 GT limit.

The spaces have a fluid flexibility on the upper deck too, including a large outdoor area aft with comfy sofas and a coffee table, another expression of the yacht’s convivial spirit. The space encompasses an al fresco dining zone to enjoy at any time of day, courtesy of the elegant glass panelling integrated into the superstructure to keep off the wind. The impressive full-custom table can extend to accommodate up to 12 diners. Sliding glass doors lead into the panoramic sky lounge, a beautifully luminous space with huge windows for sea views to take the breath away. Complete with commodious sofa and widescreen TV, this palatial social setting converts easily into a movie theatre to fabulous effect.

The sundeck is a multipurpose space equally suited to evening entertaining and sunbathing by day. A lounge area aft is entirely dedicated to convivial living, with a fully custom table at the centre – the twin of the one in the upperdeck dining area – seating up to 10. It can be divided in two and anchored at the sides to create the perfect venue for an evening party. The deck’s centrepiece is a spectacular horseshoe-shaped lounge bar, open both forward and aft, that hives off the sun area with a round hydromassage pool at the bow end. Six decades on, the DB5 continues to be one of the world’s most iconic and recognisable cars, and took centre stage of Aston Martin’s presence at the Goodwood Revival festival in Sussex last weekend alongside the latest addition to the marque’s revered DB bloodline, the world’s first Super Tourer, DB12.

SIXTIES ICON The year was 1963. Aston Martin was riding a wave of popularity and its DB4 had been selling consistently well since it was unveiled as an entirely new car for the marque in 1958. Yet with strong competition from luxury sports car makers both at home and on the continent, something new was needed to keep the brand on top. Making its official public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1963 the newcomer featured several design, technical and equipment changes over its predecessor – most notably a major engine development delivering even more power – that justified the use of a name entirely new to the car world of the day, but now synonymous with the ultimate in style and desirability: DB5. The saloon and, later, convertible bearing this unmistakable moniker were in production at the brand’s Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire factory and headquarters for a little over two years but, in that time, set about forging a reputation and fame that, today, make them among the most desirable cars of all time. One fictious owner in particular springs to mind, of course, and there’s no doubt that the decision by film-makers EON Productions to put the world’s most wellknown secret agent behind the wheel of the new DB5 in a series of James Bond movies over the

course of more than half a century has cemented its place in the automotive hall of fame. But 007 is far from the only ‘celebrity’ to have been seen behind the wheel of this now iconic Aston Martin.

years since – from Robert Plant and Jay Kay to Elle McPherson and Ralph Lauren – have ensured that saloon and convertible versions of the car alike have rarely left the limelight.

The Swinging Sixties were about to take off as crowds jostled for a glimpse of the new DB5 in Frankfurt and, within only a few years, many of the most famous actors, pop stars and celebrities of the day would be counting themselves fortunate to be among the exclusive ranks of Aston Martin ownership.

Indeed, the DB5’s celebrity appeal proved to be a springboard for success and helped take Aston Martin from niche British sports car maker to global automotive superstar.

Celebrated DB5 patrons in the 1960s include The Beatles’ Sir Paul McCartney and George Harrison and Rolling Stone Mick Jagger. Master comedian Peter Sellers also acquired the model, while a plethora of notable names in the

THE MOST POWERFUL M CAR EVER MADE Possibly the most controversial M car to date, the XM SUV indeed makes a huge statement. The XM on the outside looks like Iron Man’s secret weapon. The first thing you notice about the car is how enormous it is. The distinctive grille with the BMW XM logo and the beautiful curves and sculpted lines around the car make it one of the most stunning cars I have seen in a while. The XM offers a first-class lounge type of interior with an extremely spacious luxurious feel. The PHEV powertrain hits hard, and the XM can get to 60 in the 4-second range which for a car of this size is impressive. When you get in the car you are fully aware of the V8 sitting at the front and you know you have the M badge attached to this car which when driving BMWs in the past has given me a sense of suspense and excitement but when you start the XM there is no roar which is slightly disappointing. But saying that this is a plug-in Hybrid so maybe I was getting my hopes up a little.

For a car that weighs more than 2.7 tonnes, I was expecting it to feel sluggish and heavy, but I was pleasantly surprised. The XM is insanely rapid off the line. You can feel the electric motor adds to the performance of the XM with the turbos kicking in, then you can hear the roar of the V8 as it springs into life and you feel like you could just keep going and going. Unlike a lot of cars that I see on the market, the XM’s pure electric mode is more than just a gimmick. It packs enough energy to deliver around 30 miles of allelectric driving range which is plenty for your morning commute or drive around town. The e-motor spins through the transmission, which sends the power to all four wheels. You also keep a lot of the XM’s power in fully electric mode its not like the car goes limp you still find plenty of power under your foot. The inside of the XM definitely took me by surprise. The exterior looks like a battle tank but as soon as you get inside you are transported into a first-class airport lounge waiting for the free drinks and canapes. There is plenty of legroom and you would have no issue in getting three large adults in the back with room to spare.

In the boot, there is no underfloor storage, so the charging cables are found in a lovely, tailored BMW bag that comes with the XM. To be honest, I think I would rather keep the bag and store the cables elsewhere.

To sum up the XM the looks will divide people but I think everyone would agree that the driving experience and the combination of the V8 and electric engine is a very good one and hard to beat as it does offer you a lot. The XM is a very quick car but it also offers a lot of luxury similar to the 7-series and when you combine all of that it does make the XM a very special car indeed.

Constantly pushing new boundaries in terms of materials, fusion and aesthetics, Hublot has been loving Art for more than 10 years, working closely with daring, unconventional artists and designers to envision watches from new creative angles. The collaboration between Hublot and Ross began in 2020, in a threeyear engineering process leading

to an entirely new development, from case to crown, to dial, strap and bezel: the Big Bang Tourbillon SR_A by Samuel Ross. Just as with living materials, Ross’s creativity is constantly shaping, reshaping, improving his own thoughts, building on his first watch design to turn the watch case into a gray monochrome outfit to be worn on of the three rubber straps ranging from vivid green to black or white. A new iteration to which he has brought some subtle yet insightfully rethought details.

So, what’s new? To assert its industrial look, Ross has opted to attire all the watch case components in shiny microblasted titanium, extending this to the clasp which also features a rough laser engraving of the Hublot logo. To enhance the overall gray monochrome look, the crown is overmolded in gray rubber, while the tourbillon bridge now appears in a neutral shade enabling the watch to be easily paired with one of the three smooth full rubber straps in black, white or the pop vibes of vivid green. “We are focused on crafting refined, minimal and expressive timepieces. SR_A, looks to expand, re-define and establish timeless icons of design, reflecting a spirit of innovation, optimism and craft. Mingling sacred and industrial, organic and synthetic influences

From sculpture to wearable wrist sculpture Applying Samuel Ross’s artistic language to Hublot watchmaking is exactly how he envisioned the sculpture that marked the start of his creative collaboration with Hublot in 2020 : encapsulating materials in aerodynamic, simple and striking shapes incorporating imprints of Nature’s sacred geometry to tell 40 years of Hublot history. Building on the perfect hexagonal pattern, Ross knows how to contrast hyper-technical with traditional elements to ensure a perfect fit with Hublot’s Art of Fusion vision. Just as in the sculpture he created for Hublot, Ross takes on the Big Bang tourbillon by playing on transparency with holes in the structure, as well as referencing the origins of Fusion by mixing rubber with manufactured metal. By juxtaposing contrasting materials, he has created a balance between the organic and the industrial, forged through innovation.

With the hexagonal honeycomb shape and its perfect six equal sides, Ross has chosen the dominant governing pattern in the natural world recalling the functionality of a watch. Exactly like every single object he has designed, the watch is conceived as a durable, ergonomic and incredibly lightweight object – in this case made to be wristworn. Transposing this sacred geometry of Nature into the watch, Ross envisioned titanium plates to be polished, brushed, hammered and perforated in order to create a lean and imposing silhouette inducing a sense of motion. The twelve hour-markers in rainbow colours printed on the motherof-pearl also require meticulous craftsmanship and patience. We know that Maison Ernest has a rich heritage but could you tell us more about the history of the brand and how important its history is to the product you design today? In the early 20th century, Maison Ernest was known for its taboo high heels. The women of high society secretly came to order their high heels... to show off, to play a role, as if these heels gave them an exhilarating feeling that made them forget what they were supposed to be... to become, for a moment, who they really were deep down inside. Today, this is what my creations for Maison Ernest represent: the awakening of one’s true nature... All of the products are stunning and have their own unique identity but could you tell us what your favorite product is to design and sell?

How is working in the fashion industry different today than when you started out? When I started 27 years ago, everything was different, easier, and harder at the same time. We weren’t even using the Internet yet, and social networks even less. For my first shoe collection (I was 22), all I had to do was go to a trade show and I ended up at Le Bon Marché or Galeries Lafayette in Paris. The contact with buyers was more fluid

and natural. On the other hand, it was much harder to get known in the media. Now, with the social networks, everyone has a chance to increase their visibility. I cannot say what differentiates us from other companies... having such a strong history, such a deeprooted DNA, ... having an artistic director who is a woman, where unfortunately there is less and less parity in this position in fashion...

I don’t fantasize about the perfect or ideal woman; I fantasize about making my customers happy and beautiful when they wear my creations... I create for figures in love with femininity, because I am a woman, I wear my creations, and if I treat each of them like my child, I bring to them my critical eye but also all my attention and love, without concession and without limit. It may be special, but for me it is only the foundation of all my work.

childhood onwards, was directed towards this profession, that I wanted to do more than anything else. Is there a particular product of yours that you are most proud of? Lapinou: I was afraid of how people would react to discovering this part of me that people didn’t expect: a bit of craziness, a girly touch, and above all an offbeat side. But the response was overwhelming. By bringing this fantasy, these styles brought joy, like an enchanted parenthesis. It is also for these moments of exchange and sharing that I do and love this job. There’s so much pressure for designers to come out with their greatest collections season after season. How do you manage to keep up with the change of lines?

The fear of the blank page is very real, as is the fear of failing, but as soon as you start drawing, the fear flies away and a flood of creation flows and does not stop... At each creation session, I have enough designs for 10 collections. The difficulty lies in choosing the right styles at the right time. Changing lines is more of a salvation than anything else, because as a creative person you are always looking for something new, to reinvent yourself, to explore something else... For me, change is a powerful driver. Could you tell us about the other services you offer, some that people might not know you provide? We offer a very special service: the high heels walking class: individual, duo or collective! More than just learning to walk, it is a 360° initiation, where we try to understand you, know who you are, and what you are tending to, by advising you both on your foot morphology but also on your body, to have an ease that can be seen at the end of the first lesson! And I dream of a more global Maison Ernest, in order to offer a complete vision of my fantasy world...

ARANYANI; THE FIRST LUXURY INTERNATIONAL HANDBAG BRAND FROM INDIA, OPENS ITS DOORS WITH THEIR FIRST CONCEPT STORE IN MAYFAIR, LONDON Aranyani, the first luxury international handbag brand from India, launched in the UK this Autumn, with the focus to create a sustainable legacy.

The brand has now opened its doors to their first concept store in London (21 Bruton St, Mayfair) to coincide with launching their AW22/23 collection. The name Aranyani means ‘The Goddess of the Forest’ which is synonymous with the brands focus on sustainable artistry, nature and quality. The new Aranyani flagship store is located in London’s exclusive Mayfair district and is split across two levels. The ground floor area (550sq ft) is primarily given for retail — creating a calm and inviting space to showcase the exquisite quality and artisanal skills used to make each bag, whilst the lower ground floor space (850 sq ft) caters for a VIP experience, allowing the customisation of the product, in a luxurious yet approachable environment. The store experience was based on the idea of a journey through Aranyani’s forest. A conceptual narrative that allowed the design team to consider light, colour, material and the sensory landscape as the customer moves through the spaces. The customer starts their journey at the forest edge as they enter the store, moving deeper under the canopy as they explore – this is a place of curiosity and intrigue with a range of bags beautifully illuminated on elegant, tiered shelving as if resting on the branches of trees. The space draws the customer into the central ‘glade’, a sculptural area of soft light that

illuminates hero product on large slabs of British stone and Irish marble. A luxurious consultation room is located on the lower ground floor, housing a library of Aranyani’s leather finishes, gemstones and other details that embellish the bags. Whilst the design involves a rich palette of locally sourced materials, that were selected with sustainability in mind, and a reverence to the natural environment – reflecting the brands ethical credentials. Most key finishes are sourced locally within the UK, which was a refreshing challenge for the design team, and care was taken to find the right selection of British stones, naturally based wall finishes and ethically sourced materials. Celebrating British suppliers helps give the spaces a unique sense of place and links it to the local landscape.

CLIVE CHRISTIAN INTERIORS TRANSFORMS AN ART DECO TOWNHOUSE IN PORTUGAL

Luxury British furniture brand Clive Christian Interiors has transformed an Art Deco townhouse in Portugal into a glamorous, Gatsby-inspired home. The exquisite renovation features extensive wine storage, monogram marquetry, a decadent games room and a walnut-panelled cigar room complete with mirrored ceiling.

A team of designers, craftspeople and installers saw the year-long project through from concept to completion, working hand-in-hand with local builders while the house was being refurbished from shell. The result showcases Clive Christian’s exceptional craftsmanship and use of fine materials as well as numerous features that were bespoke to the client, who also has homes in London and the USA.

Familiar with the brand’s leading reputation, the client approached Clive Christian while the renovation was still at planning stage, selecting units and materials from the Architectural, Metro Deco and Senate collections. Catering to the client’s love of fine finishes and unique design, the Clive Christian team installed custom cabinetry, panelling and bespoke freestanding pieces throughout the house, including the

entrance hall, ensuite bedrooms, dressing rooms, lounge, dining room, cigar room and games room. Detailing and materials were adapted to suit the style of the home, with bespoke marquetry adding to the highly personal finish.

ENTRANCE HALL The striking monochrome entrance hall makes an immediate impact while honouring the Art Deco period of the house. Black walnut cabinetry with contrasting brass fittings and gold inlay bands, as well as white wall lights, complement the striking black and white mother of pearl fireplace and marble floor.

DINING ROOM A large central marble dining table sets a glamorous tone for the room, which is complemented by grey maple cabinetry with marble interiors. The classic colour scheme and use of geometric motifs again recall the period in which the house was built. Clive Christian worked with luxury wine storage brand Spiral Cellars to install bespoke wine cabinets to house the client’s extensive collection. The grey maple cabinets, fitted with marble shelving and brass rails, were carefully designed to be completely in keeping with the other units in the room when the doors are closed.

GAMES ROOM

On the opposite wall, concealed within a cabinet, a television rises from behind an ice machine and wine fridge, with lift technology provided by Future Automations.

In the inviting games room, a large, low coffee table features a marquetry backgammon board and a chess board. The room is panelled in grey maple, with cabinetry including a TV unit and a dresser that incorporates further refrigerated wine storage.

DRESSING ROOMS AND ENSUITES

CIGAR ROOM

Expansive ‘his and hers’ dressing rooms continue the monochrome theme of the entrance hall, with the white (hers) of frosted maple cabinetry contrasting with the use of black walnut (his). The clients’ initials are depicted in marquetry inlay on the wardrobe doors. Soft leather interiors keep treasured clothing in pristine condition while catering to the client’s love of fine materials. A central floor-to-ceiling unit in black walnut comprises a dressing table on one side and entertainment unit on the reverse, incorporating TV housing and large freestanding speakers.

STUDY The client’s study features an elegant window seat surrounded by classic walnut cabinetry and shelving, complete with integrated lighting, to house books and mementos. Skilful marquetry inlay on the desk depicts the client’s initials.

The cigar room includes a spectacular mirrored ceiling and floor-to-ceiling drinks station with shelving for fine spirits, wine refrigerators from Spiral Cellars and a central humidor. Classic walnut panelling with brass fittings and gold inlay bands adds to the intimate feel. Christine Saladas, Private Client Manager at Clive Christian Harrods, comments, “It was a pleasure to work closely with our client in Portugal to complete our design vision. We were able to turn his ideas into reality by using multiple designs and different finishes to transform each room, while also keeping the integrity of the original house. A real highlight of this project was working on the Cigar Room, complete with a stunning mirrored ceiling. Clive Christian Interiors not only designed the fitted furniture and bespoke panelling, but we enjoyed sourcing all furniture, artwork and accessories to complete this showstopping room.”

THE STILT COLLECTION: Toan Nguyen’s formal minimalism and Vietnamese heritage Toan Nguyen’s innovative and surprising design, French, with Vietnamese origins, is embodied in his latest collection for District Eight: the Stilt collection, a harmonious synthesis of tradition and modernity, functionality and aesthetics, with attention paid to the environment and product quality. The collection reflects the designer’s multidisciplinary approach and poetic sensitivity, which manages to unite technology

and craftsmanship in a virtuous dialogue between man and nature. Nguyen uses oak wood for a structural solution that pays homage to typical Vietnamese stilt houses, then combines it with steel, giving the collection a unique cultural identity. “The metal completes the construction, playing an essential role in stabilizing the structure while lightening the silhouette,” says Toan Nguyen. “As much as the wood is generous and round, so the metal is its exact opposite.”

The Stilt bed, entirely upholstered in handcrafted fabric or leather, is characterized by a sinuous and thin line that expresses its warm and welcoming nature. The tailoring of the finishes emerges in the structural and decorative steel elements, which give the bed an elegant and refined look on all four sides, making it the absolute centerpiece of the bedroom, even in the middle of the room.

The Stilt collection includes a sofa module, an armchair with a footrest, a chaise lounge, a series of tables, and a bed. The structure of the sofa and armchair features cushions that delicately rest on a curved wooden base covered in handcrafted leather or fabric. The chaise lounge draws on the construction know-how of the seats, reworked with a new modifiable comfort through the movement of the rocking element and welcoming base support. The Stilt table series is available in different configurations, high and low versions, with tabletops of various sizes - round, square, or rectangular - providing greater versatility and functionality.

AN INTERVIEW WITH KRONOS AV Kronos AV have become a huge name in the audio industry, and are now rated as one of the top audio retailers in the world. Having just collected two more awards, we sat down with MD David Campbell, and son Richie to find out more about this incredible company.

How and why did you start Kronos AV? “I began Kronos AV literally from my bedroom. I always had an interest in music, and had been buying HiFi for a number of years. I started Kronos AV as locally I felt there wasn’t much choice for HiFi. There were a few dealers, but they only stocked a small number of brands and options. I think the final decision was made when I did an audition of turntables and was told by another dealer I ‘couldn’t hear’ because I didn’t like the sound of a particular turntable that he stocked. I knew I could offer better service to customers which focused on what they wanted, so with a £1000 loan from my uncle I started Kronos AV in1987 and has grown to the multi national company it is today” I understand it is a family affair? You are still family owned and operated despite your growth? “Yes that’s correct. I am very lucky to have my son’s Richie and Matty now involved in the business, and we have always kept it a very tight knit staff here. We want to keep the standards of our service very high, and all of our staff share the same passion as I do. Having my family involved is fantastic, they understand the company and they have brought in that modern way of doing things which has helped keep us moving forward.”

Richie, you were tasked with the online side of the business. How did you adapt Kronos AV to this style of business?

For our readers who may not be as familiar with HiFi, what makes it different to normal “day to day” music systems?

“It had its challenges. I knew the way my dad was with customers, so I wanted to create that personal experience. The challenge was how to do that from a distance. With our online side, there was of course the ‘Click and Buy’ option, but I wanted to make it more personal than that. Customers are encouraged to speak to us, as we want to tailor our service to each customer’s exact needs. Every customer is provided with a dedicated staff member, so they get to know you better, and know exactly what you want in a system. Essentially you are given a personal shopper with every order. I think it builds confidence, as the customers know what they are buying is right for their system and it removes that doubt when buying which makes the experience much more relaxing and enjoyable.”

“HiFi is an acronym for High Fidelity, which literally translates to ‘the reproduction of sound with little distortion, giving a result very similar to the original.’ That is exactly what we are aiming to do, to create a sound that is as close to having the artist or band in your living room as possible. To achieve that, there are multiple products from speakers, to amplifiers, to cables etc… It all comes down to how close to ‘real’ you want to get, but unfortunately the limiting factor like all things is, the closer you want to get, the more it costs. The same way a chef can select specific ingredients to create a particular taste, we specialise in selecting the right equipment to make a sound that is individual to your tastes.”

What makes Kronos AV stand out from other retailers? “For me, I think it is the personal touch. As I mentioned above, I didn’t want any customer to feel they were wrong because I didn’t personally agree. Music is subjective, and each person has their own preference. What we aim to do is listen to the customer and help them make the system of their dreams. We also appreciate that these systems are going into homes, so having the right aesthetic is also majorly important. That’s why we stock such a wide range of products from over 100 brands, and many of our brands also have the option to customise the products to suit your interior or preference”

You have also just won two awards this year for your customer service, is that correct? “Yes, we have been very lucky this year and been awarded BEST NATIONWIDE AUDIO RETAILER OF THE YEAR & also the BEST AV RETAILER in the South Prestige Awards. We have just a few days ago been nominated for the NORTHERN IRELAND ENTERPRISE AWARDS, so we are really happy with the service we are providing. It is a huge credit to the team for the work they put in, and it’s nice to have that recognition. We have always had the customers needs at the forefront of what we do. This is a passion for us, as well as a business and we want customers to have that experience that we have when we sit down to listen to music. Music is to be enjoyed and that’s what we want to help our customers achieve.’

So what does the future hold for Kronos AV? “We hope to continue to expand, and offer more stores and opportunities for our customers. We have a 10 year plan and we only think we are scratching the surface. We have had some offers for purchasing the company but the timing wasn’t right, and Kronos AV is something very close to our hearts so it would need to be the right person taking over. At the moment that’s not in our thoughts, I have two sons here who are capable of taking over if needed, so the future for Kronos AV is looking very bright. I would like to say a personal thank you to all of customers for their support over the years as without our customers we don’t have a business, and we hope to continue to build beautiful systems together.”

Ski season is fast approaching and if it’s been a while since you last hit the slopes, now is the time to get in shape. When it comes to ‘ski fitness’ it’s often assumed we are talking about cardio, however, one area of training that is often overlooked is the upper body - which is crucially important for a good ski session. Even the most experienced sloperider will experience a fall now and again, and so strong muscles are needed to help them pushup off the ground. After a fall, skiers can often be in an awkward position, weighed down by heavy equipment like skis and poles, and so upper body strength is vital to get upright and to keep up their stamina. The majority of ski injuries tend to be shoulder, elbow, and wrist injuries, and I have treated many patients over the years with shoulder damage from skiing. It can take years to correct a skiing injury and it can often be a tricky, costly and painful process. Therefore it pays to strengthen the upper body beforehand as a stronger body will make you more resilient and less prone to injury.

exercises like bicep curls - also any sort of exercise which involves pushing or pulling will be especially effective and will mimic the movement on the slopes. Chin ups, press ups, planks are all good exercises, as well as single arm versions of these exercises, which are particularly good for making your core work double-time to keep you upright. Having a strong core equals a stable spine and this is incredibly important for decreasing your chance of damage on the slopes. The shoulder joint has a huge amount of motion available and relies on multiple muscles to maintain its proper alignment and movement. It is capable of

generating large amounts of power, e.g. pushing on a ski pole and propelling the body forwards. T It is very important for the movement involved in skiing. Rotator cuff tears from skiing and snowboarding are most often a result of a trauma - such as a fall or an impact with a tree, tower or another person. Accidents like this put pressure on the shoulder joint, causing it to twist which can result in a rotator cuff tear. Poor technique can also cause damage, so if it’s your first time skiing it’s important to make sure you are working with a qualified trainer, and if you haven’t been for a few years a refresher lesson will never hurt!
